And then I was like, she sings powerfully and beautifully in red.
SPEAKER_02Mimi in love. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And Mimi.
unknownMimi.
SPEAKER_03And Mimi.
SPEAKER_01Hi guys. Now we're getting the break.
SPEAKER_05Now we're getting the break. Guys, we had a fun idea for today's episode. We got a bunch of questions. Got a bunch of op for questions that we're gonna ask each other. Okay. I mine are less.
SPEAKER_02Yours are probably better.
SPEAKER_05Okay. I don't even see them on the screen.
SPEAKER_02You can't see you can't see my first one.
SPEAKER_05I cannot read from this far.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Do you want me to ask it to you? Yeah, sure, sure, sure. Okay. What is an opera that you would show someone that likes Adam Sandler movies?
SPEAKER_05That's easy. Gilbert and Sullivan.
SPEAKER_02Really?
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02No, Gilbert and Sullivan, the the humor is too highfalutin.
SPEAKER_05But it is humor. And if you're doing GNS right, it's like it's like just funny to anyone.
SPEAKER_02Which one?
SPEAKER_05Oh. Oh. Oh. Not pinafore. Pirates could work. You know that recording where they make um Frederick look like uh the lead in Pirates of the Caribbean?
SPEAKER_02Oh. Something like that could be.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yes, it wasn't, it wasn't Frederick. It was Pirate King. Yeah, I did too.
SPEAKER_02Pirates of the Caribbean? Yes.
SPEAKER_05Oh, not the movie. The GNS version. Oh my god, I haven't thought about that movie in a long time.
SPEAKER_01I'll tell you why later.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Who fears? Yeah, no, I feel like Okay, well now you need to tell me now. You need to tell me now.
SPEAKER_01No, later. It's not it's not interesting. It's not interesting. What were you talking about?
SPEAKER_02So you watched the the the Pirates of Penzance where they made Frederick look like Jack Sparrow?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I did. Sorry, I just thought about that clip. It's like, bitch, do I look like and I wonder if that's how he felt. That's the Pirate King. It's Jack Sparrow.
SPEAKER_05Anyway, yeah, I I saw that, and I feel like that could work for the Adam Sandler babes. Like I think that could I think that would be a good fit.
SPEAKER_02My pick is Don Pasquale.
SPEAKER_05Really?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02Just like the goofy hijinks of it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02The crazy like I think it I think it's lowbrow humor. Yeah. Similar way to Adam Sandler movies.
SPEAKER_05I forget that. I think sometimes I like assume better of Don Pasquale. I'm like, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's like but it really is pretty simple. If you're thinking of the Soprano 2, no, it's easy.
SPEAKER_05It's like frequent ass kickings on her end, and that's and that's that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And that's funny. That's my pick. Cool. I like that.
SPEAKER_05I support you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Sweet.
SPEAKER_05What if I ask you the Nesque one? Yeah. The Nesque. I can speak English. Yeah. Well, where are mine? It's not showing up.
SPEAKER_02Oh, did you send them to yourself?
SPEAKER_05No, I sent them to you.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you sent them to me? Oh, then they're on my phone.
SPEAKER_05Oh.
SPEAKER_02This is funny. Your questions are on my phone.
SPEAKER_05That's so funny. Okay. Okay, well, I'm asking you your own question back at you, but what what opera would you take someone to if you wanted them to not like it, if you wanted them to never want to see another opera again?
SPEAKER_02Um say that one more time.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. If you had someone that you like wanted them to hate opera, you did not want them to have a good impression of it. You wanted it to like suck for them when you took them. What show would you take them to?
SPEAKER_02If they've never seen an opera before, um, I would probably take them to some sort of handle thing. Yeah. Like Alcina.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02That doesn't make sense. I would I would it would it would have to have this is the checklist. Has to have a counter tenor.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02Has to have way too many arias, has to have no hummable melodies, and is too long. So like Alcina, probably. I I fear or like Julius Julius Caesar was my first thought, but that at least has a story that people kind of know.
SPEAKER_05Yes. I have to agree with you, but like I would probably say Daidamia or Da Daidamia, I think that's how you say Daidamiya. That's how Americans say it. Some kind of handle four hours. Yeah. Seconding that. Although the one I saw was actually not too bad. Because that the lyric they did Daidamia, but it was like uh puppets for like all of the ballet stuff, and I was like, oh, that's kind of creative.
SPEAKER_02You gotta do something.
SPEAKER_05You you have to do something.
SPEAKER_02I was so bored watching Julia a production of Julius Caesar that the baritone came out, and I was just like totally just like brain I'm I'm totally brain rotted. That's right. But I was totally, I was totally just like thinking about something else, and then I remembered that I was at the opera and I and I like paid attention, and the guy did this wrest it. It was just a sec it was like one line of secko reset and it was really good. I started clapping.
SPEAKER_06The one line of rest it was good.
SPEAKER_04No, reset top, man. Like some belligerent asshole. Clapping at a turn.
SPEAKER_01I clapped, I I like clapped twice.
SPEAKER_02But yeah, I definitely but I I genuinely I was like, wow, that was a good recet.
SPEAKER_04And let people speak out at the opera. Exactly. Let them cheer.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so next time you hear a good recit, clap to that person. One line of reset, not the whole scene. One good line of reset, because oh man, when a line of reset's good, it's really good.
SPEAKER_05We're such nerds. Help. We're complete, total nerds. Help.
SPEAKER_02Anyways, you want to do the next one?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, you read, you read.
SPEAKER_02Oh, this is fun. Okay. Yeah, so we just did that one. Oh, I just wrote the same thing three times.
SPEAKER_05You're like, yeah, I have 12 questions, and I'm like, oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Cool. What opera would you show like uh oh no, this is a different one. What opera would you show someone who thinks they hate opera?
SPEAKER_05Okay. But you want to change their mind.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, with the goal.
SPEAKER_01With the goal to change their mind.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_01That's fine.
SPEAKER_05You just let them keep hating.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um, okay. I'm gonna think strategically here. So if they hate opera, a lot of people hate opera because they think it's like highfalutin and a little classist and a little uh like so. What would be an opera that would change their mind about that? I feel like Boem is a potential option. I think Boem is a strong option.
SPEAKER_02Boem was my first thought, but my second thought's better. I want to hear your second thought. Boem is so good because it's like so many great melodies, and like this is the I've got another question that I'm gonna answer Bohem for that that's different than this. So my pick is the Adventures of Cavalier and Clay.
SPEAKER_05I haven't seen that.
SPEAKER_02It's so good. I saw it at the the premiere at Indiana University, and it's at the Met now or wrapped or wrapped up at the Met recently.
SPEAKER_05You're right.
SPEAKER_02It's about it's about these guys that want to be writers uh uh in in World War II, and there's comic book characters and movie stars, and it's like such a I mean this like watching it, I felt like I was watching an episode of like breaking bad or something where it's just like plot point after plot point after plot point. Wow. Like it felt like I was watching a really interesting TV show that was just like I was just sucked in the whole time. Wow, story, not even with the R not even thinking about the aria's really. Um Wow. Another reason, it sounds like a Batman movie, like the the score to me sounded just like my favorite Batman movies growing up with like Val Kilmer and Michael Keaton and those guys. Wow. Where it's just like and and even I mean, even that sound kind of bleeds into the newer Batman movies with like where the brass is just ripping and there's like really interesting electronic sounds. It doesn't sound like an opera in a way that I think is really appealing. I like that. I would have to check this out, and yeah, and and it it it's it was so interesting. That's what I would show somebody who thinks they hate opera.
SPEAKER_05This is just gonna be an hour of us influencing each other to go see different shows. Yeah, this is awesome. Cool.
SPEAKER_02You wanna do the next one?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02These are going fast. This is cool.
SPEAKER_05What's an opera you are like embarrassed to admit you've never seen?
SPEAKER_02Uh La Traviata.
SPEAKER_05Oh, same. That's funny.
SPEAKER_02Same. That's really funny.
SPEAKER_05And um, I also I for me, Tosca and Madame Butterfly, I still haven't seen.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you've not seen Tosca? Oh, that's one of my favorites.
SPEAKER_05See in the scene. I think it's fine. Yeah. We're like, we're not judging, we're not judging.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05But no, like, and and it's never judgment, but it it always is. Oh, I've never really talked about that. Like when that comes up.
SPEAKER_02You have like like La Travier only comes around so much unless you take a trip, you know. Like, yeah, there's YouTube, but it's like a level of yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, but it's not seeing it's different.
SPEAKER_02It's different.
SPEAKER_05It is totally different. I don't know. Like, we've not really talked about this, but like in music school in your early days, did you ever get people that were like, Oh, you don't know what that is? Um, you don't know what that opera is? Like, you know, you don't get what that's about.
SPEAKER_02No, because I feel like that's pretty pervasive. Crazy. Not really. I mean, I was just figuring out myself, like, you know, I didn't know what I didn't know what I was supposed to sing, I didn't know what was good, so I was like, That was me too kind of thing. I mean, I I was really into Bohem. That was like the first opera that I I think that honestly might have been the first opera that I watched.
SPEAKER_05That was my first opera. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Where'd you see it?
SPEAKER_05The Cincinnati Opera House.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's cool.
SPEAKER_05I didn't know Bohem was your first opera.
SPEAKER_02It it was like the first one that I like remember. But I watched it on YouTube.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02I was like, I was like, that was like the f that was like the first opera that I sort of like thought a lot about.
SPEAKER_05Because were you a rent head? Did you like rent?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I did like rent. Yeah, we've talked about this, yeah. Yeah. Um I played guitar and I mean one song glory from that is like the coolest.
SPEAKER_05It's the best. Yeah. The Bohem was what got me into doing opera, actually. Um I think I've talked about this on the pod before, maybe once, but like I was at like a musical theater intensive uh the summer into my senior year of high school.
SPEAKER_02Where was that?
SPEAKER_05At the uh CCM. It was at Cincinnati Conservatory Music. That's cool. It was really cool, and I fully thought I was gonna get my BFA musical theater still at this point. Yeah. But in the bridge weekend between the two weeks of the intensive A, they like had classes where they taught everyone in the program. So there were acting people, there were musical theater people and vocal performance people. They had a class where they taught everyone like the history of opera and like what opera is, and they were like, Yeah, you're all gonna be seeing La Bohème over the weekend, like whatever. Yeah, so they took all of us to go as a class. Yeah, and I remember I was obsessed with rent in high school. I was like, this is my everything. And I was like, oh, well, this is what rent was based on, like also what I've been telling people that like my next show is is Bohem. Yeah, I I frame it like, oh, have you seen Rent? They're like, Oh yeah. I'm like, okay, that's the thing that Rent was based on. They're like, that's so cool.
SPEAKER_02Like it gets them every time. What's their name in Rent? Maureen.
SPEAKER_05Maureen, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Maureen, yeah.
SPEAKER_05The tango. I also need to watch Rent again. I love Rent. Um, and the movie's just so good, anyway. Um, uh yeah, I remember the whole time I was like seeing what the character parallels were, but I remember being aghast at like, oh my god, like Mimi has like this big powerful voice, but it's classical in the way that I like feel naturally inclined to sing. Because I remember feeling like, oh, I could never be Mimi, I could never be a Belty role like that because I was surrounded by the musical theater world.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05And then I was like, she sings powerfully and beautifully Mimi in rant.
SPEAKER_02Mimi in lava.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Mimi. That's how we have to.
SPEAKER_03And Mimi Mimi. And me me.
SPEAKER_01I just wasn't, I just I actually didn't know which one you were talking about.
SPEAKER_05No, fair, fair, fair. Um, but like seeing the opera, yeah, I was like, they sing so powerfully, but it's not like in the way that you feel is natural to sing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's cool.
SPEAKER_05So I was like, wow, I could do this. And that's when I decided I was like, I'm gonna like try and understand what my choir teacher is talking about when she says a degree in vocal performance. Because I remember she'd been telling me, she's like, you should consider this. And then even the teachers at this intensive were like, you should consider opera. And I was like, Oh, okay, yeah, summer intensive at CCM for a musical theater.
SPEAKER_02Between your soft, your junior and senior year.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was a crazy intensive. It was a great intensive. If that if you know young people looking for a good musical theater intensive, that's a great one. Yeah, I don't think it's changed at all that much since I've been there because I think I did that 2017, but like learned so much about the MT industry, and like we were dancing every day, every day. I miss it. I I really do miss it. I I think I underplay just how much I used to dance growing up. It was everything I I did. I like it was everything to me. And I I stopped when I was like 16 because I cared about choir and orchestra more. It's like, oh, there's not enough time to do all this shit. But but anyways, I I love Lava Wam, that's what got me into it. I didn't know that was the first one you watched.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I don't I honestly don't remember if it was the first one I watched, but it was the first one that I remember watching like and thinking about it, you know. Like, the first one I watched in person, I want to say might have been it was either Tosca or Magic Flute at the Opera Theater St. Louis.
SPEAKER_05Nice.
SPEAKER_02I think.
SPEAKER_05Flute's a great first show. I need to not underestimate that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it is.
SPEAKER_05It is.
SPEAKER_02Any I mean, yeah. Because you recognize you recognize the Queen of the Night Aria.
SPEAKER_05And like I I feel like And I love Papagino's like stuff. Yeah, it's just awesome. It's just so funny. It's so funny.
SPEAKER_02I'm glad you think so. I do. You saw my versions.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I like it. Well, that and I've seen the Mets and I've seen the Mets flute too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That's true. That's true.
SPEAKER_05And it's just funny on its own.
SPEAKER_02But the Queen of the Night is like like somebody comes out and sings that. I mean, you're never gonna forget that. And it's at such a good place in the show.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like, and if especially if you're getting the at least the English dialogue, and you get I mean, the story's goofy and doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
SPEAKER_04But I mean it's no, and that's what's beautiful about it.
SPEAKER_02And then like, yeah. Like, somebody was somebody wrote about the about our production of flute that afterwards they were so happy to see this like group of high school girls that were like trying to sing the Queen of the Night Aria and like failing hilariously, you know.
SPEAKER_04What the hell? It's so cool.
SPEAKER_02That makes me and that makes me really happy.
SPEAKER_04That's so cool. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So I think I think I mean that's kind of connected to flute would be would be it's I think it can be boring to somebody who doesn't know, but if you do it right, I don't know. The right the right production of Magic Flute could be a great first opera.
SPEAKER_05I second that hard. You want to ask the next one?
SPEAKER_02Sure. What do I have here? We kind of answered this one, but I'll jump to the next one.
SPEAKER_05Pierce.
SPEAKER_02What opera would you show to someone who likes A24 movies?
SPEAKER_05Salome.
SPEAKER_02Salome.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. We kind of talked about that last. Or um the free core movies.
SPEAKER_05Yes, yeah, yeah, no, we did. That or YNUFA.
SPEAKER_02I don't know that.
SPEAKER_05You've never seen YNUFA. When it was here at Lyric, really good. I don't know. I saw Lisa Davidson do it too. So that was cool to hear her voice. That's a vibe. Check.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_05It's uh Yanachek opera. Oh, okay. Yeah, it was really good. And I didn't know anything about it going into it. I went and saw it with uh Joel Sadie Grace, so it was really fun. And yeah, it was Philip and Castan. I think we all got to go. It was really fun. And like it was just I was struck by it because it's a really heavy plot. It's really sad. Sure. But the the Philip and I were talking about this. We're we just really like Yanichek's music.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. It's good.
SPEAKER_05It's it's really cool. I would, I would, I would show that to like an A24 person.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What would you show them?
SPEAKER_02It's hard because I really like A24 movies. So Yeah, I I don't even know. I didn't think I didn't think about this one hard enough. Um was it? There was one that I the one that I saw recently. I don't know. Honestly, like a good production of Don Giovanni, maybe.
SPEAKER_06Ooh.
SPEAKER_02You know. That was fun. Like a good production of that, because it's like a good production of Don Giovanni can be really kooky in the way that A24 movies can be. Also kind of scary. Yeah. And like the the element of supernatural coming in later, you know?
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I think maybe uh but a good production. Yes. Good production where that leans into that. Yes. But but like I'm also thinking like with A24 movies like like The Whale and Everything Everywhere All At Once that are like just as much like psychological. And if you get a good Don Giovanni that's like leaning into the the heat, the like self-destructive of it.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that'd be really cool.
SPEAKER_02The the self-destructive.
SPEAKER_05I would actually love to see a show like that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Me and Elijah have talked about putting on Don Giovanni at some point. Just like Oh, for sure. Like we know a great option. We won't in Centralia, but like doing it as a full-fledged dark comedy. Just as a production. Like dark comedy.
SPEAKER_05In the way you would artistically want to do it without the constraints.
SPEAKER_02It's so funny. Yes. You know, you I mean you you have to be really careful about the the opening and and the you know the the level of consent, you know. I mean, that's important that you that you take caution with. Yeah. But like the catalog aria could be so funny. The whole thing with the commendatore could actually be really funny in a dark way.
SPEAKER_05I wish you were able to see um the music on site production of Don Giovanni, because it was actually it was really f I know I've talked about it before, but it set in Alaska. It was it was funny. And it I think it leaned into some of those elements that you're talking about. But I would love to see a full whole hog in the postage, like redition of what you're talking about in the periods. Because people like that. Why are we denying that?
SPEAKER_02Why are we denying that the people yearn for periods and I think it's really tricky with the Mozart stuff because so much of it is about about the real problems of the class system back then. Yeah. Marriage of Figaro does not work outside of the period because you don't have the the first right. It becomes a totally different story.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it does.
SPEAKER_02And Don Giovanni is is similar because unless you show the power of the count, which I've also thought about, a production of Don Giovanni that's set in a like frat house would work really well.
SPEAKER_05It would.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh it would.
SPEAKER_02And yeah, and Don Giovanni's like the, you know, like the the senior whatever frat frat leader and Leperello's his like pledge and his like walking around, you know. You know, and then and the and the and the poor girls are just like there, you know. Like I think and also like the whole thing with Mazzetto could be a whole thing, you know. And the and the and the commendatore being like this poor, this poor girl, like sorority girl's dad, you know, like they killed the sorority girl's dad.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, and that's the other thing too with Mongiovanni that I that I really like is you see I my interpretation is you see the downfall of this guy. Like he's like he's he he's he's sleeping with all these women, he's he's living this life of hedonism, and he gets to the point where it just the crescendo is when he Kills commendatory. It's like he's never done that before. And then my interpretation is that you see him sort of where he whereas he could lean back and say Oh shit, I can't believe I've done this. Or he's gonna be like, This is my life and go fully into it. And that's what you see. And that that's that's my I like that. We haven't actually talked about Don Giovanni. No, and I and I haven't thought about it a whole lot since I did it, you know, years, years ago now. But I think there's a lot, there's a lot to that story that can be very, very good. And I also really like this is like a whole other thing. I don't know if I don't know if I can say this on the podcast. I like when Don Giovanni is suicidal. Because you get so much, so much is um, so much of the text, Don Giovanni's like, if you don't do this for me, I'll kill you. It's that level through out of of of of manipulation. So that's another thing.
SPEAKER_05Like I think Well, I like how that ties into the hitting the gas pedal on like this is my life now, and it's full.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, and and like and you get you get cool to watch someone unravel like that. Yeah, and you get the absolute devastation of the character that like you know, like there's there's sort of an underlying sadness to to anybody that goes into a life of hedonism in that way. That's like, oh, my life is so bad, I need to just fully lean into all to what you want right now, you know. And that's really and that's really sad. So if you're gonna go Giovanni where the Devianial Finestra is like really like like like I will actually kill myself if I don't do this. You know, we may need to cut this out of the podcast, but no, it's a whole I think if I bleep a little time.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Now you need to do this. Now you need to do this. Wait, no, but do do the don do the Don G with the not I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about do Don G with the frat, and then do the thing where you pay homage to the the frets. Well, I don't know, this is a little maybe like a month ago, but like the police walked in on those guys in the middle of a a hazing initiation. You didn't hear about this? Oh my god, big pop culture moment. Like people were like making skits of it on TikTok kind of meaning where like the cops like busted this frat for um hazing, but the hazing was like they had all these boys in the basement covered in food. That's crazy with like blindfolds on. I don't know if that's right, but like they were like blindfolded and like just covered in food and they weren't saying anything, even then when the police came in. It was like it was scary.
SPEAKER_02Like that is freaky.
SPEAKER_05I'm telling you, you could really lean into some of the clavicular now.
SPEAKER_02Like that could also be interesting.
SPEAKER_05Clavicular.
SPEAKER_02You know clam.
SPEAKER_04Oh, sorry. Yes, yes, I do.
unknownI'm sorry.
SPEAKER_04I'm sorry, yes, I know clam.
SPEAKER_02Stop. Next one.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02You want to go?
SPEAKER_05What's a show you could watch multiple times over and not get bored of?
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's hard because I get bored sweetly.
SPEAKER_04You brain rotted.
SPEAKER_01No, I usually don't.
SPEAKER_02I actually don't get bored. I I haven't felt bored in a long time. Um a show that I could watch over and over again and not get bored. Oh, that's that's really that's really hard.
SPEAKER_03I know.
SPEAKER_02Um like the same production or oh, that's a fair question.
SPEAKER_05I'm gonna say not the same production.
SPEAKER_02But the same opera. Yeah. Same opera, different productions. Yeah. Um I don't know, Tosca maybe. It's just so good. It's just so good. The music is so good. There's so many different ways that you can play the relationships between the characters with with Kavrodosi and Tosca and Scarpia and even the even the other ones. Um maybe maybe that. And also, like, I mean, there's just like so much exciting singing. Yeah. What do you think?
SPEAKER_05Probably a GNS.
SPEAKER_02Really? Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_05I love the gondoliers. I don't think I'd get bored of I honestly, there was a whole era where I was not bored. You're so sweet. It was so fun. It was so good.
SPEAKER_02It was so good.
SPEAKER_05I gotta post the pictures from that. Um, but no, I I there was a whole era where I was not bored, and I was watching all these different productions of it. And like, I don't think I can say the same for other GNSs. Like, yeah, I really enjoyed seeing how each company made its choices around what the characters acted like, what the costumes looked like. Granted, like I could tell when a company was like limited by budget or like whatever, but I really loved seeing the ones where they weren't limited by budget.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god, there's this there's that one main production of the gondoliers, and and the gals are in these beautiful like pink corsets, and like they have these beautiful arches of flowers for the roses white and roses red scene at the beginning. I don't think I could get bored watching that.
SPEAKER_02I could watch that over and over, I think.
SPEAKER_05I did, in fact.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, yeah, that's a hard question. That's a good one, though.
SPEAKER_05Can I double bounce you actually?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What is your favorite recorded opera to watch? Like a non-live.
SPEAKER_02I don't watch, I don't watch things twice very often. That's the other thing.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, me.
SPEAKER_02Well, it's like a childhood movie. I'll watch that on repeat, but like, yeah, even that I don't do a whole lot. Um, that recording of that recording of Boam with Pavarotti. Yeah, oh my god. Yeah, I mean I th that that that's it for me right now.
SPEAKER_05Okay.
SPEAKER_02Oh, but I don't know. I'm I'm I'm trying to go back to my to my Met live in HD.
SPEAKER_05And actually, I have have you ever done those like movie nights at the Met?
SPEAKER_02No, I haven't, but I really want to.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Or I said that wrong. It's the ones where you go to the theater and you see the live one. I really want to.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, live in HD. Yeah. The we should do that. We should do that. Yeah. Cool.
SPEAKER_05We're doing it. Yeah. Stay tuned. Um, yeah, no. I I really want to go to one of those. Philip's gone to one of those. And uh it was with the with Jules Sadie Grace.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. A bunch of my friends went and saw Grounded at the Method. Oh. Through that. Just through that. With at the movie theater, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Nice. It's a cool idea. Gotta give it to the Met. That's like really fun.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and like, yeah, I mean, like, I remember watching Sam going back to Don Giovanni, watching Sam Raimi do Don Giovanni with Kurt Mole as the commendatore. That was uh that was a pillar recording for me.
SPEAKER_05They started putting like the old, like the not like I know it would defeat the purpose of it being live at the Met, but like I would love it if they put like the old vintage recordings.
SPEAKER_02Yeah of they're doing that with movies now.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like I would like love to go see an old recording of an opera at the movie theater. Oh my god, I'd freak out. That would be cool. Oh my god, if we saw if we could see the Frany, the Morella Frany Bohem.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh, that hurts my soul. That's just I didn't hi, a humble request that I'm submitting to the Met, please. The people need that. Um that would be awesome. Anyway, yeah. You go ahead. You go ahead.
SPEAKER_02Cool.
SPEAKER_03Uh the fan trula.
SPEAKER_02Oh. Uh, what is your favorite opera that you have ever done music-wise?
unknownI really loved the gondoliers.
SPEAKER_05I really loved, I loved that music. I don't know what it was. It just really stuck in my brain. It was very sticky for me. But I also I need to think. Like that was what just shot into my mind first. Because I uh musically. Musically. I'm trying to think back to under undergrad too. Um there was a newer work that I really enjoyed doing called Ballymore. We only did the second half uh called Losers. There's winners and there's losers. We only did the second half losers, and I played um Hannah and that. She's like a middle-aged woman. And yeah, Irish, Irish middle-aged woman. Um, so I had to learn to do that for that. Yeah, and do it in an operatic singing was interesting, and I enjoyed that challenge. But the music was also just really fun. It was very like 6'8, just a lot of 6'8, like very Irish coded, and I was like, oh, this is fun. And and the composer was there to like work with us and and help us do things, and it was really fun. I I enjoyed that music. But oh, oh, um, I love uh the street scene music. I love street scene.
SPEAKER_02Have you done street scene?
SPEAKER_05Yeah. I was Jenny Hilderberg. Oh, I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was cool. Where did you do that?
SPEAKER_05DePaul.
SPEAKER_02Oh. That was my one show I did DePaul. Oh, gotcha.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. It was fun. Interesting. I liked street scene.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Uh our production was very minimalist. It was interesting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Um, but yeah, no, like I I love the music. Like, what good would the moon be is just gorgeous. The mom's aria is gorgeous. Yeah. Um, it's I love the musical theater like moments in between, like the moon face. Like it's just it's so 1940s fun. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_05What about you? Musically?
SPEAKER_02It's hard because like that's the real meaty question. Yeah, it it's really, it's really hard. Um because Don Giovanni is definitely up there. I mean, singing Deviana, Deviani Alla Finestra is like my one of my favorite things to sing. Uh huh. Just like period. Um so like and and the and the whole trio at the end, like that's that's really high up there. But honestly, like Albert Herring had some fun, like really, really good music stuff. But then I open it up a little bit and it's like, oh my god, I really loved singing carousel. And it's not an opera, but like don't get me started.
SPEAKER_05I love that fucking music so much.
SPEAKER_02It was like it was like the most serious It was honestly like the most seriously I've taken my singing in a weird way. Cool. Like I made sure that I was well rested and hydrated. I think because it was so because I because I was demanding. Well, because I struggled with it if I loved you for a long time, you know, and I was just like I it took so long for me to get it to a place it's like, yes, this is I'm singing it the way I want it to sound. You know, yes, like when we did it, yeah, like last year, it like it was okay, but it still was definitely not like how I wanted it to sound. But like over the course of the rehearsal, doing the role, like by the times of the show, I was like, Yeah, I'm singing it how I want it to sound.
SPEAKER_05And I was so happy for you because you had like expressed that, and then I got to see it, and I like knew what you were talking about. I was like, Yeah, it's like locked in for him, and and that's just such a good feeling that I want for like.
SPEAKER_02I don't even know if my microphone was on at all during the I wouldn't be surprised if not. Yeah, it was so loud. Yeah, it was fun, it was awesome. So I was just happy you got to have that feeling. So, I mean, that's definitely and honestly, the Phantom music was great too. Those are kind of similar. Yeah, but yeah, I don't know. I would I would say I would say it's a tie between carousel and Don Giovanni.
SPEAKER_05Okay. Some of I had thoughts about the music in Phantom. Some of it was like really good melodies that I was like, yes. Yeah, and then some of it I was like Yeah, interesting. Yeah, like the like the beauty and the beast as stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I was like, Yeah, I hear that. I hear that.
SPEAKER_05Like the the running of the thousand, then we're singing about you.
SPEAKER_04And I'm like, okay. That that way was like fine, but I was like, oh, this is a musical theater.
SPEAKER_02Well, and you and you read the book, like I don't think I don't think Angelo Weber's Phantom gets it right either. You read the book and it's so horrifying at times.
SPEAKER_05Oh my god.
SPEAKER_02You know, I don't even think so. You read the book?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_05Good for you. I still haven't read the book.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02It's pretty short. Um it's good. It definitely reads like those those Victorian, you know, you know, those Victorian acts. Like like Dracula and Frankenstein and stuff like that. Like it it reads like an old monster monster book. That's kind of fun. Yeah, it's cool.
SPEAKER_05Okay, what you got? I like I like triple questioned you.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that was great. What was your favorite opera you have done, people-wise?
SPEAKER_05Oh, with like oh god, am I gonna go back to Gondoliers? Gondoliers was so fun. Yeah, like the I I said this on the pod already, but like the everyone was just on the same cheerful page. Yeah, about being good sports and like That's nice, yeah, just enjoying the show and like making it happen. Yeah. Even when things were going wrong, it's like, okay, well, we just like do it and we fix it and we do our best, and like not that things went wrong, but like there were some like last-minute elements added into that show, like that were difficult to navigate, like add-ons to the gondolas that we were scootering on, and it's like, okay, that's stressful, but like it wasn't like a big thing where anyone's like, uh, or like uh we just rolled with it and it was fun when everyone was on and everyone was just enjoying the show. You could tell everyone enjoyed the music and just liked each other's company, and it was like shit, like it should always be like this. Um, let me think if there's anything else. I don't I I think I think that trumps it for me, but I have been really blessed with a lot of really positive people experiences. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I feel the same way.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. What about you?
SPEAKER_02Magic flute.
SPEAKER_05Well, yes, of course. That's that's my closer second.
SPEAKER_02That's my closest second. But yeah, I'm just yeah, but I think about that and I just feel about like like how lucky I am to have such good good friends and talented friends and caring friends, you know. Like that's what that was. That's what I'm saying.
SPEAKER_05I was literally just saying before the pod, I was telling Caden, I was like, you have a lot of good people in your life, it's really cool. Yeah, but I relate to that. Blessed.
SPEAKER_04We're so blessed. We are so blessed. Sorry. We're losing it. It's 1 p.m. and we're losing it.
SPEAKER_00I'm just so blessed to have this podcast with you.
SPEAKER_05What a blast in. It is, it is. Um, you got any more questions? Uh have you seen that David Pumpkins skit?
SPEAKER_02David Pumpkin? I don't know.
SPEAKER_05I'm showing it to you after this. It's awesome. It's okay, yeah. One of my best friends in high school put me onto it. It was like our biggest inside joke, it's a friend group. The SNL skit. Yeah. It's like, I'm David Pumpkins, and he's got the two skeletons next to him. That sounds like viral. Yeah, and you had the two skeletons that danced and it was stupid as so dumb. Anyway.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I like that. I think I honestly think that might be all of my because I wrote kind of the same ones. Uh yeah. Yeah. I wrote what opera resonates with you emotionally the most right now?
SPEAKER_05Oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Great ask. I like the most recent was like Bohem, because I like rewatched and was like, oh my god.
SPEAKER_02Same.
SPEAKER_05Like, oh my god, it's so.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and the aspect of like of Bohem to me, because that that's my answer to this right now, you know. Yeah, like if I thought about it a little bit more, like, you know, the he's like, he's like, go find someone else because the choices I've made in my life can't support you the way that I want to is a really really hard thing for me to grapple with. And also the fact that he he doesn't see her when she dies. Yeah, when he's there, you know. Really? Yeah.
SPEAKER_05But but he's just turned around. He doesn't leave the room. He leaves the room.
SPEAKER_02Uh I mean, I I need to go back and look and see what the what the actual stage directions are. Because Marcello notices that she's dead. Yeah, but yeah, he's not the first one to see it. Yeah, I think that's a good thing. It's like uh hey man, I think she died. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Sorry, it's like crazy.
SPEAKER_05Oh, it's crazy. Crazy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but that that whole thing of But it really What what what you cho you know what you choose in your life to be important and how that like how the different things the the different things that you love are sometimes in opposition to one another. Is I find that in in a lot of a lot of the stuff that I think about.
SPEAKER_05It is so shady boots though that he's like I know it's gonna be so painful when she passes that like I'm just gonna pretend to be a jealous bitch and like be kind of mean to her.
SPEAKER_02But I don't think that it is that. I think that it is he's gonna be a jealous asshole.
SPEAKER_05Pretend to be. He's pretending. Like there's nothing to be jealous of.
SPEAKER_02Well, and I think I think that jealousy is like you should go with somebody else. So and that's that's the that's that's my this is this is how it's gonna be for ours.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_02Um you oh yeah, go find go find a rich go find a rich guy, you know, that's what you want to be with anyways. It's not like oh that's what you want to be with anyways, it's like that's that's how you're gonna survive because I can't do it.
SPEAKER_05And so so the the jealousy is is the the jealousy and and the rage is just like really trying to get her to quickly go somewhere else because or it's like the upsetness that he feels about the fact that that's what the circumstances are of like I'm not willing to give up the artist lifestyle, or like there is no way for him to escape it at this point, like that is his life, yeah. And he he knows it's so painful that he can't have her because at the end of the day, like he would need to support her in that way, and he can't, and so all that anger probably just gets channeled onto her of like well, you're the reason that I feel this way.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and our translation highlights that aspect of it more. Cool. So it's gonna be interesting, but yeah, the whole like like lit like literally, like and I think you know, you have to take into account the the the time period and men not showing their real emotions. Sure. Um like rather rather than rather than saying we can't be together because you need to find somebody that's going to be able to take care of you, you know. Um that's just such a difficult thing. And so if you if you if you get the overly emotional like reaction to that feeling of I need you to be with somebody else because I I can't as much as I want to and as much as I wish that I could. I can't pay your hospital bills.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Oh my god, that's so difficult. Um so that's kind of that's kind of where I'm at. And and like like I said to you the same thing about like singing Mind Zane and Mind Ven and like thinking about like like choosing choosing the life of the dancer versus protecting the homeland traditional, yeah. Like like that, that's a big part of of my balance right now. Yeah that I'm trying to figure out. And so that that yeah, that's that's super super emotional, but no, but that's major.
SPEAKER_05Uh huh. It's major. I'm excited to see how our bohem turns out. Stay tuned for that content. That'll be fun. We're doing Boem this summer. Yep. Caden's putting on the production of Boem in his hometown. It'll be fun. Yeah, it will be fun. It'll be good. Guys, Caden's got to get to class. That's it. We're gonna see you later. We don't want Caden to be light, so we will talk to you later, and we'll see you next time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Bye.
