This is the Hour of Happy. Let's dive in. Hey guys, welcome back to the Hour of Happy. I'm your host, Devin Roof, and I want to start off by saying thank you for being here today. And I mean that. Whether you're folding laundry, listening on your way to work, or during your walk, I appreciate you being here so, so much. All right, so today we are talking about the hot topic of AI. But I wanted to specifically focus on the things that AI can't replace when it comes to business. Everywhere you look, it's AI is replacing jobs, it's changing marketing, it can write your emails, your captions, your sales pages. AI can do this faster, better, cheaper. And while some of that is exciting, I also think there's this quiet exhaustion or ache happening underneath all of it in a lot of us right now. There's this longing for nostalgia in simpler times. There's also kind of a low-grade anxiety that plays in the background when we're trying to create something in our jobs or our business. And people are starting to question is there even a place for me in all of this? Does what I do for work still matter? Is what I'm doing enough? I felt that, and maybe you have too, but that's why I wanted to record this episode today. Because the answer is heck yes. Yes, you are absolutely enough. And yes, you better believe there are things you carry inside of you that no algorithm or perfectly optimized machine will ever, ever be able to replicate. Okay, so let's start here. The world has never had more options than it does right now. There's more coaches, more content creators and influencers, there's more service providers of every single kind. And now AI is helping all of them produce content faster than ever before. So people are starting to wonder how can they compete? Creatives are wondering if their skills are still valuable. And everyone is kind of thinking, how do I stand out now? And here's where I think we're starting to get it wrong. Most people are trying to solve a depth problem with a volume solution. And what I mean when I say that is they think the answer is to produce more, more, more, more, to post more and show up on all the platforms, everywhere, all at once. That might feel like the logical response, especially based on everything you're seeing, right? To keep up with your competitors or to outrun them. But it's not actually what keeps people. You know what keeps people? A feeling. That's it. That is the whole secret. And I know it sounds almost frustratingly simple, but stick with me here, guys. Think about a business that you are loyal to. One you go back to again and again and recommend without ever being asked. You just love this business, right? Was it because they had the most post or the best feed aesthetic? Heck no. Well, maybe. But I'd bet it's because of something they made you feel more than anything else that kept you going back. That feeling you get when you walk into a business and they remember your name, the photographer who saw how nervous you were on your wedding day and slow down and just talk to you for a few minutes before she ever picked up her camera, or the therapist who made you feel safe during your session. That is what builds a business that lasts and helps you outperform your competitors every single time. That's real connection. And it can't be generated or scaled by a machine. It has to come from you, the human. Okay, so of course I'm thinking about this when it comes to my marketing business, but I think about this a lot when it comes to Belro, too. I've owned Belro, as you guys know, for over a decade now, and the retail world has changed so dramatically in that short amount of time. Now, people can order anything from anywhere in seconds. There's free overnight shipping, endless options, giant corporations with tons and tons of resources that I will never have. It really makes it feel like it's impossible to compete sometimes. And yet, people are still choosing to shop Bel Row. Not because we're the cheapest or because we can compete with Amazon, because we definitely cannot compete with Amazon. But they come back because of something that can't be replicated. They've watched my life unfold in real time over the years. They've seen the good stuff and the hard stuff, the pop-up events where we're getting things loaded in at 6 a.m., the late night launches where I was packing orders on the floor surrounded by tissue paper, the stories I shared when I was exhausted or uncertain or just honest about what running a business actually feels like. The conversations in the comments, the DMs that turn into friendships, the community that formed around something real. I could go on and on and on, guys. But that's what I think what people are genuinely starving for right now. They want that nostalgia moment. And nostalgia is so big on social media. They want simple, authentic, real. They want to feel like they know you, like they're part of something. Like if they walked into your business or met you on the street, it would feel exactly like it does online. Warm, genuine, and human, right? Now let me be clear about something because I don't want this episode to come across as anti-technology because it's definitely not. I use AI tools. I think they help us massively and the way we work and live our lives every day. But there's something that concerns me about the way a lot of people are using it. They're treating it like a replacement for themselves instead of support for themselves. And those are two completely different things. AI can't carry your lived experiences. The decade you spent in your industry making mistakes and learning from them, developing instincts that you can't even fully explain, those are yours and yours alone. AI can't replicate your emotional intelligence or the way you read a room, the way you know when someone needs reassurance or a push or just to be heard, that can only be done by you, the human. It can't replicate human discernment either. You know, that gut feeling that tells you when something is off or when an opportunity isn't right or when a client is in a right fit, that can only be done by you. And lastly, it can't replicate intuition. That creative instinct that you have, the knowing that this is what this person needs, even if they don't know how to ask for it yet. That's your intuition and yours alone. And it absolutely cannot replicate heart. You can feel when you're reading something that was written with nothing behind it, when the words are technically fine, but there's nothing alive in them. When the content is polished, but just feels really, really empty. You see that in post, right? You can feel it the same way you can feel when a room changes, when a genuinely warm person walks in. Energy is not intangible, it's real. People sense it in the first few sentences of your email and the way you respond to a comment or the way your brand feels to the person experiencing it for the first time. That's something AI will never ever be able to generate. It's something you build as a human slowly over time through every honest word and every moment you showed up as yourself. So, guys, here we go. The future is going to favor human brands, let me tell you. Okay. I want to say something that I genuinely believe with my whole heart. The businesses that are going to win in the next few years are the ones that are the most human. I know that might feel counterintuitive when everything in the world right now is screaming at us to systematize and use Chat GPT and Claude, but hear me out. Something is happening online right now where everything is starting to sound the same. I'm sure you guys have noticed it too. There's the same hooks, the same captions, buzzwords, all that cycling and waves. That type of content is just made to perform. It's performance-based only. It's not used to connect with people. And people are getting really tired of it. They're scrolling faster, they're becoming numb to things that would have stopped them in their tracks maybe just a couple of years ago. But you know what still cuts through is a real voice and a real perspective. A story that only one person could have told. One person, not AI generated, one person. An opinion that makes you think, yes, I've never heard it put that way before. I think that's part of why podcasting is blowing up so much right now, honestly. People are so hungry for long-form, unhurried human connection and content. They want to hear someone think out loud, to stumble over a word or laugh, to get passionate about something again. They want to feel like they're sitting on a couch with someone, not consuming content, but actually connecting with the person they're listening to as if they were sitting right across from them. That's what you're doing when you show up with your real voice in your business. You are giving people something they can't get from a machine. Please, please, guys, don't underestimate how rare and valuable this is right now. It's huge. And AI will never ever be able to replace that. All right. If I could sit down with every business owner who's feeling overwhelmed right now and say one thing, it would be this. Stop competing on volume. Just stop. You don't need to post every single day to be relevant or chase every trend to stay visible. You just need depth, consistency, and intention. The willingness to say something real, super real, instead of something safe. That takes some guts, especially right now. But it's the way we respond when something goes wrong, the way we follow through on what we said we would do, the way someone feels after every interaction with your brand or business. I'm not talking about just a first interaction either, but the 50th. One thoughtful, honest, truly valuable post a week will do way more for your business than seven empty ones. One thing I think right now, and maybe this is a hot take, but I don't think people are exhausted by content. I think they're actually tired of content that asks for their attention without giving them anything in return. What I mean when I say that is I think they're still deeply, deeply drawn to relatable content that makes them feel understood. That's the door that never closes. It makes them want to tell their friends about you. They come back when they don't even need anything yet because just being in your world feels good. So now, guys, I want to end by saying something directly to you. Whoever you are, wherever you're at in your business or your life journey right now, your humanity and being human is not a liability in this new AI landscape. It's actually your greatest advantage. And I don't want you to forget that. Okay. Remember, your story matters and can be used to set you apart from your competition. Not a cleaned up AI version, but your actual story with all the hard parts and the uncertainty and uncomfortable moments that shaped you. And your voice matters, not a polished robotic version of it. Your actual voice, the one that gets excited about certain things and goes quiet about others. Your perspective matters. Nobody has been through what you've been through. Remember that. No one's seen what you've seen or learned what you've learned. That's not just nothing, you guys, that is actually irreplaceable. And I think sometimes we forget that. What it needs is you. The most magnetic people I know in business and in life are the most real deal, authentic. What you see is what you get people. You can feel that they mean what they say, and being around them feels so, so good. I think some of those people are listening right now because they've listened to my podcast and commented. They're my closest friends and family and people I admire. And so I just have to do a quick shout-out right there. But yes, you're the real deal people. The world and people and humanity in general, I feel like, are longing for more of you in that right now. AI will never, ever, ever be able to replace that. All right, so let's bring it all home. AI is a tool, a genuinely useful one, but it's not a replacement for the thing that has always been at the center of every great business ever built. And that's human connection. People may find you through an algorithm, they may click on you because of a good hook or a beautiful photo, but they'll stay because of how you make them feel. Mark my words. The businesses that will really thrive in these next few years are the ones that learn how to use technology without losing the heart of what they're building. The ones that let AI handle the tasks, but they keep themselves in the relationship. At the end of the day, people will forget your best caption and your follower count, but they will never ever forget how you made them feel.
