What Makes Ozzie’s Body Shop Different From National Chain Repair Centers?
Ever been told your car is “good as new” and felt a knot in your stomach? We go under the hood of collision repair to expose the real differences between OEM-certified work and insurance-driven shortcuts—and why those choices can shape how your vehicle protects you in the next impact. With CEO and co-owner Megan Mueller, we unpack how factory procedures, proper tooling, and deep training restore the energy pathways modern cars rely on to keep passengers safe.
We talk through the hidden damage you can’t see from a glance—foam absorbers crushed behind intact bumpers, sensors nudged a few millimeters off target, adhesives and rivets that must be placed in exact locations to maintain structural integrity. Megan explains why her technicians are salaried, not paid by commission, so they have the time and incentive to look up procedures, use OEM parts, and document each step. We dive into the rigorous training at Lexus, Rivian, Audi, and BMW centers, and the real cost of cutting corners: voided warranties, compromised crash performance, and “pretty” repairs that fail when it matters most.
You’ll also hear how a family-owned culture changes the customer experience—from honest evaluations instead of quick estimates, to transparent updates by text, email, or phone, to inviting owners to the shop to see the work in progress. If you’ve wondered how to choose a collision center you can trust, this conversation gives you a clear checklist: certifications, calibrated equipment, procedure-driven repairs, and a team that puts safety before speed. Your car deserves more than a cosmetic fix; it deserves to be brought back to the standard it was built to meet.
If this helped you see repairs in a new light, follow the show, share it with a friend who drives daily, and leave a review with the one question you still have—we’ll answer it on a future episode.

Welcome And Show Mission
SPEAKER_02Welcome to Crash Course, the Aussies Body Shop Show, where bent metal mystery noises and uh-oh moments meet Northern Colorado's finest collision repair center. Hosted by Megan Mueller, co-owner and CEO of Ozzy's Body Shop, an OEM certified and authorized collision repair facility that's been getting families safely back on the road since 1967. From fender benders to full-on frame repairs, insurance questions to will this ever look right again? Megan's here to explain it all in plain English with a little grease, a little grace, and a lot of art. Because around here, the motto's simple. To be the best, you gotta be the best. And your car deserves nothing less. Let's pull into the shop and get started.
Meet The Hosts
SPEAKER_00When your car needs real care, not cookie cutter repairs, there's a big difference in who you trust. Welcome everyone. Chelsea Earlywine here, co-host and producer in the studio with Megan Mueller, co-owner and CEO of Aussie's Body Shop. Megan, how are you today? Chelsea, I'm doing very well. It's great to be with you. How are you? Doing well. Thank you. Well, Megan, let's jump right in.
What Sets Ozzy’s Apart
SPEAKER_00I want to know what makes Ozzy's Body Shop different from national chain repair centers.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, God, where do you even begin? I would say so. Ultimately, we are the most certified collision repair facility between Denver and the Canadian border. Um, and what that means is we so to be certified, um, you have to re you have to meet a lot of tooling requirements, an exceptional amount of training, um, and also follow the OEM guidelines as far as far as the repairs go. So we work and repair vehicles the way that the OEMs want it completed, not necessarily the way that the insurance companies want to cover, um, which is a huge difference. So a lot of the, you know, really big MSOs, most of them are in a ton of contracts with the insurance companies, which means they're going to repair the vehicle the way that they're compensated by the insurance company. So that's going to be a lot of, you know, used aftermarket parts typically are going to be used. Um, the technicians are typically going to be paid on a commission basis. So it, in my opinion, it really incentivizes the technicians to just do high production, like get it out, get it out, get it out. Um, whereas they're probably not looking up the OEM requirements. Um, they're not using the parts that the OEM wants used. And so a lot of times what that's going to do is that is actually going to void manufacturer warranties. When you have an OEM repair, um, it is completely done the way that the manufacturer wants. So, like our technicians are all paid on salary so that if they get into a sticky situation where it's a, you know, kind of a challenging quarter panel replacement, let's say, um, they are going
OEM Standards Vs Insurance Shortcuts
SPEAKER_01to take the time to look up exactly how that quarter panel is supposed to be replaced, exactly where it's supposed to be bonded, riveted, um, where structural adhesive should be placed. They're going to uh restore that vehicle back to the way that the OEM, based on many, many crash tests, wants that done. Um, in addition, I mean, our our industry is unfortunately not um very regulated as far as training. So really, you don't have to have any training to be a technician, which is terrifying. Um and, you know, I will tell you that our techs have been out to the Lexus Center, they've been out to the Rivian Center, they've been to the Audi Center, the BMW Center. I mean, I have flown these guys all over the nation to these training centers and are by far the most certified technicians um in our area. And we're really proud of the work that we do. It's it's in the interest of the vehicle owner and and the vehicle structure and safety. Wow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's a that's a lot. That's wonderful, Megan. And it sounds like those OEM certifications are very crucial. Um, and how do you feel, Megan, that being a family-owned business influences the level of service that the customers receive?
SPEAKER_01I think it's huge. I think um, you know, we're a family here as far as, you know, just the group of guys that we've had here. We've um we've all worked together for a long time and really just have a quality of standard that is absolutely focused on the best interest of the families that are getting back in these vehicles. Um, because
Training, Certifications, And Safety
SPEAKER_01I don't think that that's taken seriously enough in our industry that the way that vehicles um absorb and impact these days, it's designed to take that energy and transfer it around the cab to keep the passengers safe. So, you know, people are in incredible collisions these days and are very okay. And that's because of the way that the vehicles are designed. And I just I really believe that we have an extra care um when it comes to the families that are getting back in these vehicles.
SPEAKER_00And I'm sure your customers feel that when they're coming to your shop. Can you talk a little bit about the difference in the repair quality when when shops prioritize that proper equipment and the proper training?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, you know, uh we all only know what we know. Um and you know, I I actually had an interesting interview not too long ago with a guy that was working at one of the local um corporate shops. And he decided to quit with no other job lined up, and he said that it was because he just couldn't stomach working there. Oh wow. And it's really frustrating to know that um production is put on a higher pedestal than than necessarily the proper repair. We uh we we end up fixing a lot of vehicles that have been fixed elsewhere. Um and and that's a really unfortunate thing too, because it makes you wonder how many are out there on the road uh that didn't that nobody knows you can make anything look pretty on the outside. That's the hard thing about repairs, too. Is you know, you can you can make it look nice from the outside, but what is the inside, which is really the part that matters? That's the part that's gonna keep people safe.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. That's terrifying to think about
Family Values And Service
SPEAKER_00for sure. Oh not trying to terrify everybody. No, no, it's it's a valid fear to have for sure. Um, so so Megan, what does the customer experience look like when they arrive at Aussies compared to a chain center?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, um, so when we do, so we don't do quote unquote estimates because quite frankly, you can't really tell what a repair is going to involve until you actually disassemble the area there because of that energy transfer that we were talking about. So, you know, even just a pretty light front-end collision, um, when you actually get into it, right behind that bumper sits something called an absorber, which is like a foam pad. Um, that barely has to get hit to require replacement, but you can't see it. Um, so we do basically an evaluation. Um, we discuss every all the options with the vehicle owners and what they're going to receive with a certified repair, what um, you know, the parts situation is going to look like, what their insurance policy
Hidden Damage And Evaluations
SPEAKER_01um might read. Um, you know, just all the we just go over the entire process because our main thing is that we may not be the shop for everybody, and we completely understand that. But we want people to be able to feel confident that they're making an informed decision whether we're the right company for them or not.
SPEAKER_00Well, it sounds like it you have a lot of great communication there. How do you handle transparency throughout that repair process?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, absolutely. So um, you know, we we do do text messaging. Some people really like that. We cater it to whatever is best for the vehicle owner. Some really want emails, some really want text, some really prefer an old school phone call that goes over everything, right? Um, and so we we cater that to them. And through each step of the process, we update them. Like, here is what your insurance company is covering right now. What do you want to do as far as the parts? Um, how do you want to proceed forward?
Transparency And Customer Updates
SPEAKER_01Um, you know, we have a lot of vehicle owners that want to come down and look at it with us. We welcome people all the time because ultimately they just they need to feel confident and informed on what they're receiving back. Yeah, I love that. That's lots of communication.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's great. So, in in closing, Megan, what do you think keeps customers coming back generation after generation?
SPEAKER_01I think that people can just feel that we care a little different. Um, you know, I it's instilled in every single person that works here. Um, if if you don't, quite frankly, uh, you just won't work here. If if you don't hold the values that that our company does, which is to do the best thing for the vehicle.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I love that. I love that, Megan. Well, thank you so much for walking us through that. We really appreciate you being here today, and we'll see you next time. Thanks, Chelsea.
