What OEM Certification Really Means

When your vehicle is repaired, the difference between fixed and fixed right often comes down to one thing: certification. Welcome everyone, Chelsea Earlywine, co-host and producer here in the studio with Megan Mueller, co-owner and CEO of Aussie's Body Shop. Megan, how's it going today? Hey, Chelsea, as always, very happy to be with you. Good, good. Me too. All right, Megan, to kick us off, can you explain what does it mean to be OEM certified in collision repair?

Yeah, um, OEM certification is a major investment. So it's everything from they'll come out and the manufacturer will do audits. So they do annual audits, but they do a massive audit at the very beginning to see where you even sit and if you're if they're even willing to, you know, consider you as a center to enter certification. So it's everything from how you handle the business to um, you know, what procedures you have in place to you know what your front lobby looks like. Um and then the bigger stuff, like the important things as far as repairing the vehicle, it's going to be a lot of tooling and equipment that you have to purchase that is specifically tested when they crash test vehicles. It's the equipment that they're utilizing to determine how they want those vehicles repaired. Let's see. I mean, a massive amount of continuing education. I know that we've talked a lot about that, but the education that these guys do, a lot of it is actually at the manufacturer's training facilities. So it's not like it's done here. Um, they go and they they learn from the manufacturer themselves. Um, it is the ability to then purchase certain parts. So without that training and the certification, there are certain parts, especially with the higher manufacturers, that are considered restricted parts. Like they won't even sell them to a non-certified shop because they don't want their vehicles to be unsafely repaired. And yeah, it's just a it's a continuous learning process for sure.

Training Depth By Brand

Yeah, it sounds like it. So tell me a little bit more about what type of training and qualifications does a shop need to earn that OEM certification.

SPEAKER_01 3:14

Yeah, it's gonna depend on the manufacturer for sure. I would say, especially the European models. The European models are very specific about how they want their vehicles repaired. So Audi has a training facility. There is just to get the guys um initially certified, there's about 20 days of training at the Audi facility. And 20 days out of the shop is, I mean, it's a massive investment for the shop and for the technicians. Um, and that's the in-person training at the Audi facility. They also have a large amount of classes that they have to take online or virtually. Um, and then they also have to hold iCar platinum status, which requires like in-person certification regarding welding requirements and all of that. So that's just Audi, right? Then you've got Lexus that has very much the same. You've got BMW. BMW, I think, is roughly about 20 days of in-person training at their facility as well. And then, you know, they continuously come out with additional training each year that the guys need to have. So that's just kind of the startup. Um, Rivian has their own facility, Lexus has their own facilities. So it's yeah, the guys are if you don't love continuing education, you will not be a body tech here.

Oh, yeah, that makes sense. Uh, so how does the certification ensure that repairs meet the manufacturer's safety and quality standards?

Yeah, so obviously with the training, um, the guys are learning a ton about how these vehicles need to be repaired per the manufacturer. In addition, it is required that they look up on every single job the repair procedures from the OEM. So you can access repair procedures through kind of some aftermarket sites and that sort of thing, which is how most shops will locate procedures if they're locating them at all. A lot of shops won't even look up specific manufacturer requirements. Um, but by doing it through the manufacturer's actual training website, that's the fastest, most updated way. So we are finding real-time data for exactly how this specific repair needs to be performed.

Okay, so what role uh do specialized pools and equipment play in maintaining that OEM status?

When you're doing a repair, one panel can have requirements as far as like this area is gonna get riveted, this area is gonna get bonded, um, this area is gonna have a traditional form of welding, and it will help you locate all of those areas that are needed. Um, so those are the procedures that the guys are looking up, especially when it comes to those restricted parts that we were talking about. Um, those are usually related to the frame. Um, but like BMW even has components that they consider structural that are carbon fiber parts, and you have to be certified to purchase those.

So I know you mentioned Audi, BMW, Rivian. Are there other specific brands that Aussie's has those certifications for?

SPEAKER_01 6:21

I would say as far as you know, kind of the luxury brands that we're certified in, we're with Lexis, Rivian, Audi Volkswagen, BMW Mini, Volvo. Um I think I would consider those kind of our higher-end ones. And then we do also carry like Jeep Dodge RAM, Nissan Infinity, Lexus, Kia, um, Ford, and we are Ford aluminum certified as well, which is an additional certification. Um, Kia, we are electric certified, which is an additional certification. Um oh gosh, I know that I'm forgetting some. Um yeah. That's a lot.

That's a lot of them. That's great. So, Megan, before we close out, what benefits do customers gain by choosing an OEM certified repair facility?

SPEAKER_01 7:10

You know, I I was thinking that I would just read to you like exactly what, you know, a couple of them have on their websites regarding why they recommend a certified shop. So Yeah, that's great. Lexus specifically says that certified collision centers have your best interest in mind and are the industry experts in Lexus vehicles. There is no substitute for the quality of the collision repair at a Lexus Certified Collision Center. Um they go on to talk about, you know, the impeccable work. They are very specific about who they do or do not certify. Um BMW, you know, they talk about the extensive experience of hours of ongoing and specialized training, which we went over today, and just how important it is to have that.
