Do you feel distant from God? Has it been a long time since you heard His voice? If you are wondering, what do I do? Today’s episode is for you - I share three promises to claim so you can hear God’s voice.
Feeling distant from God can seem like a hunger pang that isn’t satisfied, or a thirst that can’t be quenched, or a road trip without a map. It makes us feel lost, out of sorts, separated, and possibly even desperate. This is episode #2 in our “I Don’t Feel Close to God” series. Last week, we discussed how to feel close to God. Today we are going to talk about how to hear God’s voice.
The first way you can hear God’s voice is to speak scripture aloud. It’s not like you are talking to yourself. It is speaking aloud promises God has given to us in His word. When we speak aloud what is already true about us, and we hear our own voice saying what God says about is, we are encouraged and strengthened in our faith. Talk about immediate results! The promise we are discussing today is Psalm 91:2 “I will say to the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.” You might feel awkward speaking God’s Word aloud at first, but remember, the Bible is God’s love letter to you. His Word is written in His language.
The second way you can hear God’s voice is to continue to dwell in Him. This type of total trust in God puts our hearts in a posture of submission and places our spirit in position to hear from the Holy Spirit. Hearing from Holy Spirit is different from listening to God’s voice. Dwelling is essential; it is in Him alone that we will find rest and defense. Look at the last word in verse 2: trust. It is a translation of the same Hebrew term found in Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” This calls for total trust.
The third way you can hear God’s voice is to set aside time to listen. Psalm 95:7 says, “Today if you will hear his voice.” In the scripture it says if because hearing is conditional – it happens when we quiet our hearts to listen. We make the choice to hear from God by setting time aside to listen.
We’ve talked about three promises to claim so you can hear God’s voice:
Promise number 1. Speak scripture to God in conversation. Psalm 91:2 “I will say to the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”
Promise number 2. Continue to dwell in God’s presence. Proverbs 3:5.”Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.”
Promise number 3. Set aside time to listen to God. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me.” (John 10:27)

Do you feel distant from God? Has it been a long time since you heard His voice? Are you wondering what I do? Today's episode is for you. I share three promises to claim so you can hear God's voice. Restore your heart starts right now. I'm your host, Cheryl Giesbrecht Turner. Each week I bring tips and tools from God's Word to help you identify and overcome triggers, trauma, or tragedy. When your heart is hurting or broken, God's heart breaks right along with yours. If you're anything like me, you've asked questions like, why am I going through this? Or how long will my suffering last? Or will this pain ever stop? You felt abandoned and alone. Be encouraged, you've found a friend here who knows. God understands each hurt, God cares about each loss. Everything that has happened to you has broken God's heart. Let's get started. In our previous episode number 16, we discussed how to feel close to God. Often, feeling distant from God can seem like a hunger pain that isn't satisfied, or a thirst that can't be quenched, or a road trip without a map. It makes us feel lost, out of sorts, separated, and maybe desperate. What do you do when you need help in an emergency? Call a relative, neighbor, or friend? It helps to call an emergency number 911. I've learned to call God's emergency number every day, Psalm 91, verse 1. Today's episode is number two in our I Don't Feel Close to God series. We're going to talk about how we can hear God's voice. The first way you can hear God's voice is to speak Scripture aloud. It's not like you're talking to yourself. When we read God's word aloud, we're speaking his language. We remind him of the promises God has already given to us in his word. When we speak aloud what is already true about us, we hear our own voice saying what God says about us, and we're encouraged and strengthened in our faith. Talk about immediate results. The promise we're talking about today is Psalm 91, verse 2. I will say to the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. You might feel a little strained speaking God's word aloud at first, but remember the Bible is God's love letter to you. His word is written in his language. God loves it when we use his word to praise him, pray to him, confess our sins, and repent of our sins, and even to spend time just being in awe of him. Psalm 91 is a wonderful tool for us to use. You know, the one who says to the Lord, He is my refuge, my fortress, my God in whom I put my trust. Even if you don't feel like God is your refuge and fortress, telling him you do reminds you of who he is. Psalm 91 promises deliverance and protection, not to everyone, but to dwellers. That is, you and me, those of us who go to the secret place. We go to that secret place to have time together with God. And when we're there, we ask him for strength. We seek fellowship, worship, intimacy, and nearness with him. This psalm gives hope for safety and refuge from the attacks of the world, the flesh, and the devil. Verses two and three show images of warfare. I will say to the Lord, My refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. A refuge is a place of rest. A fortress is a place of defense. Notice this does not say the Lord will provide these things. It says the Lord is these things. The second way you can hear God's voice is to continue to dwell in Him. This is the same concept as abiding in Christ. This type of total trust in God puts our hearts in a posture of submission and places our spirit in position to hear from the Holy Spirit. Hearing from the Holy Spirit is different from listening to God's voice. Dwelling is essential. It's in Him alone we'll find rest and defense. Look at that last word in verse 2. Trust. It's a translation of the same Hebrew term found in Proverbs 3 5. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. This calls for total trust. Like a construction worker at his job, forty stories above the street, depends upon a lanyard to keep him from falling. That's in case he loses his balance. He trusts that the cable and harness will support him in an emergency. He must put his complete trust in his safety equipment. That's the kind of trust that our Lord wants from us. It might feel scary at first, but with practice and peace from God, our faith is strengthened and we begin to trust God even more. We'll discover, we hear from him in new ways and receive answers to prayer as we find comfort in him. The third way you can hear God's voice is to set aside time to listen. Psalm 95 verse 7 says, Today, if you will hear his voice. In the scripture, it says if, because hearing is conditional. It happens when we quiet our hearts to listen. We make the choice to hear from God by setting time aside to listen. I found that if I do all the talking as in asking one-way prayer requests, my prayers are very selfish. When I meet God in my secret place, I usually open up to a psalm of praise and begin by first offering my praise for who God is and then thanking God for what he has done. Often I'll write these things down in my journal. It's so important to know God's word and Jesus the truth. Truth with the capital T is a person who says, He is the way, the truth, and the life. So that when the enemy lies to us and says we're unable to hear the voice of God, we can counter the lies with God's word. Jesus said, My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me. That's John 10, 27. You can hear the voice of the Holy Spirit as you meet God in your secret place, you can choose to stop, come aside, listen, and wait. God longs to draw near to you. If you discipline yourself to attentive listening to God, it will become easier and a spiritual reflex that will bring you great joy. We've talked about three promises to claim so you can hear God's voice. Promise number one, speak scripture to God in conversation. Psalm 91, verse 2, I will say to the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust. Promise number two, continue to dwell in God's presence. Proverbs 3.5, trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. Promise number 3, set aside time to listen to God. Jesus said in John 10, 27, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I encourage you this week, God's Word, the Bible, is your prayer book. You can find praise, responses, confession, lists to help you repent that can help you know what to say to God. God wants you to dwell and abide with Him. God longs to speak to you.
