Are you worried? Are you overwhelmed by anxious, restless thoughts? Have you ever said, “I’ve always been a nervous person, I can’t change.”
Today, I share three tips about how you can apply God’s truth to overcome anxiety and assure you can rest in His peace.
I remember as a young mom, I was anxious.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul; He guides me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
—Psalm 23:1-6
“He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
—Revelation 21:4
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34
“Humble yourselves, then, under God’s mighty hand, so that he will lift you up in his own good time. Leave all your worries with him, because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.” Psalm 94:19
“But now, this is what the Lord says…Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Is. 43:1
“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up.” Prov. 12:25
“Peace is what I leave with you; it is my own peace that I give you. I do not give it as the world does. Do not be worried and upset; do not be afraid.” John 14:27
“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.” Psalm 55:22
Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. Luke 12:7
“Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn, yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” Luke 12:22-26
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Psalm 46:1-3
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.1 Peter 5:6-7:
Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths Proverbs 3:5-6:
Remember God’s Word is your weapon to fight your anxiety – here’s a review of our three tips about how to overcome worry and anxiety with God’s word.
Tip 1. Choose one verse that speaks to you. I know its hard to do but one verse can change your whole attitude.
Tip 2. Write down the verse on a note, 3 x 5 card, or screen saver on your phone. Keep the card or verse handy where you can pray it during the day.
Tip 3. Read your verse aloud every hour. Exchange your fear for faith — For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7
