SPEAKER_02

Welcome to the Cashley Show. We are Kevin and Ashley.

SPEAKER_00

Hello.

SPEAKER_02

We started this podcast after recent tragedies to take a break from negativity and discover the good things happening all around us. Everywhere. Today we are talking about off the radar, the hidden movie gems from the past. So we did TV shows. Today we're doing the movies.

SPEAKER_01

These ones are they're off the radar just because they're old. They've been so long.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the forgotten ones.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you got TV for me? You got stuff for me to see, but nobody else.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. People can just look them up themselves.

SPEAKER_01

Sometimes I feel like you do this podcast just for me. Do we not spend enough time together? Is that what this is all about?

SPEAKER_02

We're gonna not spend much time together as soon as I get my job.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's sad. We could sell everything and live in a cabin in the woods.

SPEAKER_02

That is an option. Alright. These movies might not have been huge hits or turned into long-running series, but they offered creative stories, memorable characters, and special moments that are worth seeing again.

SPEAKER_01

That's something that I actually kind of miss. Nowadays it's almost like every every movie, every TV show, every book is like a sequel or in the universe, or right? Like there's like, I don't know, what like ten what do they call them? IPs or something. There's like ten whatever. You got Star Wars, Marvel, T and like everything is like in those things and places, so there's not a lot of just brand new stuff. Like I don't know. Anyways, you can keep going.

SPEAKER_02

It is hard to come up with new ideas, I think. Sure, I and I get it. Like or maybe movie companies don't like any new ideas.

SPEAKER_01

Well, it's you know, if you have a random movie that's bad, it's not gonna make much money. But if you have a Star Wars movie that's bad, it's probably still gonna make a bunch of money because it's just Star Wars.

SPEAKER_02

There's a new one coming out next week, so we'll see what it does. First up, we have Return to Oz. Did you watch this show? No. This is from 1985. So this is Dorothy is rescued from a psychiatric experiment by a mysterious girl and called back to Oz when a vain witch destroyed everything that makes the land magical. Just like a guy with a pumpkin head. I watched this when I was little.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think I have ever heard of this.

SPEAKER_02

It's a good I I think it's supposed to be kind of darker than the original Wizard of Oz.

SPEAKER_01

Well, sure, she's in a psychiatric experiment. I think I was pretty young when I watched this, so I don't I don't know if I Yeah, so is this like so Dorothy went to Oz and then she told everyone her about her experience and they're like you're crazy. So they put her in a psych ward. I would assume so, yes. And then now they're okay.

SPEAKER_02

Next up we have But it's still made by Disney. Yep, it is made by Disney. We're back, a dinosaur story from 1993. Did you watch this?

SPEAKER_01

No. These movies are I think that's something I would have loved. Time traveling dinosaurs.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Time traveling scientists gives dinosaurs a magic cereal that makes them smarter. The dinosaurs then end up in New York City for a series of comic adventures.

SPEAKER_01

I kind of want to go watch this movie. That's just what that's all it's called. We're back. Oh, because it's the dinosaurs.

SPEAKER_02

Like We're Back, a dinosaur story.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Alright, next we have Curly Sue.

SPEAKER_01

I don't are any of these real movies? Is this all just stuff you made up?

SPEAKER_02

I watched this when I was little too. I don't think I've heard of any of these. Well, right, Jim is short for James. Yeah, but I didn't ever know he went by James as an actor.

SPEAKER_01

Oh. Yeah, maybe back in. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean I've always known him as Jim Belushi, but so he's a homeless man, and this girl, I believe she's an orphan. And I don't know how they connect, but they do cons together, and they meet a lady in anyways.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I see where that's going.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Alright.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that sounds like a fun little Yeah, it's a cute show. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I like this. This is from ninety 1991.

SPEAKER_01

Curly Sue. Is that the name of the little girl?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think so.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Because her hair's curly, and maybe her name is Sue. So they called her Curly Sue in the orphanage. Okay. Yeah. I don't know. Okay, next one is Peggy Sue got married. Never heard of it. Check out how I put the Sue's together.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Nailed it.

SPEAKER_02

So Peggy Sue is from 1986. She's facing divorce. She faints at her 25th high school reunion and wakes up in 1960. She tries to fix the mistake that led to her disappointments and unhappy marriage.

SPEAKER_01

Hmm. Is that Jim Carrey?

SPEAKER_02

Kind of looks like it. And this looks like Nicolas Cage. Yeah, I like this show too.

SPEAKER_01

Who's the the female, the girl, the woman? Who's the woman? The actress? I don't know what to say. We're getting in trouble for all those things that I just said. Someone will take offense to each of them.

SPEAKER_02

Don't be offended.

SPEAKER_01

It is Jim Carrey.

SPEAKER_02

Kathleen Turner. Nicholas Cage, Jim Carrey, Helen Hunt, Sophia Coppola. I forgot the name Connor.

SPEAKER_01

I think I've heard of everyone except for the lead, Kathleen Turner.

SPEAKER_02

I think you've heard of her. Let me find stuff she's been in. Known for romancing the stone. That stuff. Body Heat, Peggy Sue, Serial Mom.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, never seen any of those.

SPEAKER_02

What about Joan's Teeth?

SPEAKER_01

We can move on from this.

SPEAKER_02

Next we have Field of Dreams. Yeah, now we go. We just watched this. Yeah, a little while ago with the kids. Yeah. Yeah. I always loved this show.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this is a great show.

SPEAKER_02

If you build it, they will come. Who said that? This is from 1989. An Iowa farmer named Ray hears a voice urging him to pursue an unbelievable dream. With his wife's support, he turns his cornfield into a place where dreams come true.

SPEAKER_01

Gets to play ball with his dad. Spoiler alert. Sorry. Yeah, it came out in 89.

SPEAKER_02

If you haven't seen it yet, you're never going to. You should you should watch it.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't spoil anything.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, next we have Batteries Not Included from 1987.

SPEAKER_01

I was so sad.

SPEAKER_02

Aliens help spirited elderly New York couple fight against ruthless land developer trying to evict them.

SPEAKER_01

Tale as old as time.

SPEAKER_02

This is such a good show though.

SPEAKER_01

It really is.

SPEAKER_02

We should watch this one with the kids.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Have we not?

SPEAKER_02

I don't think so.

SPEAKER_01

Really? I would have expected.

SPEAKER_02

I wonder if we actually did, but they were bored and we turned it off. But we should make them watch the whole thing.

SPEAKER_01

We'll just we'll have them. Let's uh I'll put it on the computer. We'll chop it up into five minute YouTube shorts.

SPEAKER_02

And then they'll watch it, yep.

SPEAKER_01

YouTube shorts just five minutes in a time.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe we could do like popcorn and like some sort of special treat that they'll just sit there and eat and watch it. I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I was so sad when like I don't know. I don't know. Spoilers?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, don't spoil.

SPEAKER_01

All right, fine.

SPEAKER_02

We want people to watch these shows. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

I think most people have already watched these.

SPEAKER_02

Just say it was a good show.

SPEAKER_01

It was a good show.

SPEAKER_02

Next one is Mac and Me.

SPEAKER_01

Mac and Me.

SPEAKER_02

You remember this?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if I've ever actually watched this, but you can look this up. Pretty sure every time Paul Rudd went on Conan, like the Tonight Show or Conan O'Brien on TBS or whatever, and he would say like he had a clip of whatever movie he was promoting. Yeah. It was Mac and Me. I'm pretty sure the boy flying off of the off the cliff in the wheelchair.

SPEAKER_02

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, every time he came, it was the same clip that he was always like he would set the clip up. Yeah, so in this scene, and then like they'd show the clip and it was Mac and Me, the kid flying off a cliff on a wheelchair. Pretty sure it was Paul Rudd.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's funny. Mac and me is from 1988. It has it's a young alien separated from his family and stranded on Earth.

SPEAKER_01

Not to be confused with E.T.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. He becomes friends with a boy in a wheelchair.

SPEAKER_01

Who flies off a cliff? Spoiler.

SPEAKER_02

Kevin's all about the spoilers today. Alright, the next one is The Burbs. So there's a new Burbs out. I think it's a TV series, but the original Burbs movie with Tom Hanks is I'm not sure how you turn this into a series. Well sure, you can always make it a series with crazy neighbors.

SPEAKER_01

The Burbs? Yeah. But wasn't the Burbs specifically about the family?

unknown

I don't remember.

SPEAKER_01

Oh. Pretty okay, go ahead. You can read.

SPEAKER_02

Alright. The Burbs is from 1989. Ray Peterson's relaxing vacation in his suburb home turns into a nightmare when the strange Klopeck family moves in down the street.

SPEAKER_01

Right. So this movie is all about like the neighbor the burbs. Right? You got the like the easy going burbs, suburbs. And then this family moves in and creates all these problems. Not like funny problems like who's the in a Christmas vacation? The guy that pulls up in like the motorhome. Yeah, I don't remember. Right. Like the antics. Yeah, not like that. Like it's a much darker thing that the family is doing. So that's what I mean by I'm not sure how you turn that into a series. Oh. Because it's like you find it out and then they catch them.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Maybe it's just the series just about terrible neighbors or something.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Next we have another good 1980s Tom Hanks movie. A lot of good 80s and 90s Tom Hanks movies.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. The next one is Fried Green Tomatoes. Did you ever see this one?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if I ever watched like the full thing.

SPEAKER_02

So this is from 1991. So Evelyn is an ordinary housewife. She visits a nursing home and befriends Ninny.

SPEAKER_00

Ninny?

SPEAKER_02

An elderly woman. They bond over stories from the past about two brave women from the Whistlestop Cafe.

SPEAKER_01

The Whistle Stop Cafe.

SPEAKER_02

And they serve fried green tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe.

SPEAKER_01

Is that that's a real thing? Because a green tomato, not like tomatillos. Yeah. But a green tomato that's so a unripe or not ripe tomato?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I think isn't that bad for you to eat unripe fruit?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. I people love it. It's like yeah, like deep fried tomato. I don't know. There's like chicken and waffles? I yeah. I don't really care for green tomato, so I don't think I would ever try it.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like this may be.

SPEAKER_02

I also think chicken and waffles seem strange. Yeah, me too. I've never had that either.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Do you peel the chicken and then cut it a piece of waffle and eat them together? Or do you do one and then the other? Yeah, I don't know. I don't either.

SPEAKER_01

And so do you then do you get syrup on your chicken?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I don't know how I feel about syrup on fried chicken. It seems interesting.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Sorry, people that love that.

SPEAKER_01

I never really tried it.

SPEAKER_02

Never tried it.

SPEAKER_01

I feel like there was something kind of ominous about this movie. Like I never really watched it, but maybe as a kid. When was the last time you watched this movie?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, I remember this movie. There I there was some bad things that happened to people in it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Let's just we'll just say that.

SPEAKER_01

For a minute I thought this was the one where Leonardo DiCaprio got a start, but that's a different one.

SPEAKER_02

Is that like Oh, I have that one on here. Okay. But it's coming. Alright, next we have City Slickers. You remember this one?

SPEAKER_01

I do. This was a fun movie. Yep. So he's 40 in this movie, supposedly.

SPEAKER_02

Oh really?

SPEAKER_01

Which is younger than me, and I remember him being old.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I remember my mom going to her 20-year high school reunion, and I was like, man, you're old. High school for 20 years.

SPEAKER_01

And that was years ago for you.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So City Slickers is from 1991. I didn't get his name, but as he approaches 40, an unhappy Manhattan Yuppie joins his two friends on a cattle drive in the southwest. Yep, that's it.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Do you know the actor's name?

SPEAKER_02

Billy Crystal. Yeah, nice. This guy, he's familiar, but I didn't remember his name.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's from Home Alone. Oh, yeah. He's part of the st the sticky bandits. The wet bandits?

SPEAKER_02

Wet bandits.

SPEAKER_01

Wet bandits in Home Alone 1. Sticky Bannits Home Alone 2.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, next we have I put this one in here for you. I never watched this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

The Red Dawn. Maybe I watched it with you actually, but as a child I didn't watch it.

SPEAKER_01

You're missing out.

SPEAKER_02

This one is from 1984. At the start of World War Three, a group of teenagers in the American West bands together to defend their town and country from invading Soviet forces.

SPEAKER_01

Wolverines Yeah. This was Love this one. Yeah. I think David and I mostly would like go up into the mountains above the house. Right?

SPEAKER_02

And like And do what these guys did.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Protect your town.

SPEAKER_01

From the Soviets and Cubans.

SPEAKER_02

That weren't anywhere near there.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

That's funny.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. We I've watched that movie at least a dozen times. Probably more. Yeah, they remade it. And it's I mean it's not as good. They remade it with Thor, whatever his name is. The actor that plays Thor from Australia.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Hemsworth him? One of the Hemsworth boys.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I don't remember their names. Alright, next we have Flight of the Navigator.

SPEAKER_01

Hmm.

SPEAKER_02

You never watched this one?

SPEAKER_01

It seems familiar.

SPEAKER_02

So this one's from 1986. It was made in 1986, but the movie's actually from 1978. That's when the place of the movie is taken out.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, because he travels into the future.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he travels eight years into the future and goes on an adventure with a smart, wisecracking alien ship. So this little light thing talks to him, and this little guy, it's just like his little friend, this little alien guy.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Andrews. Yeah, we should watch that one. It's good. Next one is Phenomenon.

SPEAKER_01

This I also love this one. I wish I was like always looking up into the night sky, hoping a UFO would come grant me powers to move pencils with my mind.

SPEAKER_02

We watched this show with our kids a few months ago as well.

SPEAKER_01

So I yeah, we did. And that was when I read because like I think the kids had questions, so I was like looking up stuff online, and like people hated this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Really?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I don't like I guess like plot holes and all sorts of different stuff. But I thought this movie was fantastic. Like a movie like this and what was when like Bradley Cooper was in? Like he becomes super smart because he takes a little pill. What was that called? But anyways, like he can do all sorts of stuff, unleashes the full potential of his brain and whatnot. And so that's kind of like Phenomenon, where like he becomes super smart, he can do all these different things.

SPEAKER_02

Limitless?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, limitless.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know if I saw this movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's a good movie.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, so Phenomenon's from 1996, an ordinary man from a small town suddenly develops telekinetic powers and becomes a genius.

SPEAKER_01

Because his light comes down, right? Slight, like aliens like phone.

SPEAKER_02

The radiation from the aliens.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I mean that's not what it was, but I'm not gonna give it away.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

The next is Cop and a Half.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think I've Burt Reynolds. I liked Burt Reynolds.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. 80s, 90s. He did a lot of good stuff. So this one is from 1993. After witnessing a murder, a young boy named Devin refuses to testify unless he gets a chance to be a policeman. So Burt Reynolds gets to be the cop to have the boy tag along with.

SPEAKER_01

Who is the little boy? Did he ever like go on to do anything else?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Cop and a half. There's lots of like little cop movies like that back then, like kindergarten cop. And then there's like Turner Hooch.

SPEAKER_02

I should have done kindergarten cop, that's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, not Turner Hooch, but like there's the one of like, was it Tom Hanks and a dog?

SPEAKER_02

His name's Norman Golden the second. The picture's pretty old, so I doubt he ever did anything else?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, next we have Bye Bye Love. So this is the movie that I was trying to watch the other night when I saw this. I was like, I want to watch this again. I guess it never came out on DVD, or there wasn't many made of them because it's crazy expensive. Like 60 bucks for this DVD on eBay. So this one's from 1995. This film follows three divorced men as they navigate family breakups and their relationships with children, ex-wives, girlfriends, and friends.

SPEAKER_01

Sounds sounds fun.

SPEAKER_02

It is a good show.

SPEAKER_01

I've got Paul, yeah, Paul Riser. I like Paul.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Uh Dennis Quaid.

SPEAKER_01

He's Dennis Quaid is the that's the guy I was talking about from a Christmas vacation.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, he's the um Randy. Yeah. Is it Randy? I think it might be Randy. All right, next we have House Sitter.

SPEAKER_01

Uh no. And that's kind of interesting because I like both of those people.

SPEAKER_02

You would really like this show. Maybe we'll try to watch it sometime soon.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So this one's from 1992. Con artist Gwen moves into Newton's empty home without his knowledge and pretends to be his new wife. What? Something happens where like someone comes to his house, like he I don't know if this is like a his second house or he's gone a lot, but she just like moves in and then like he comes there and someone else comes and so sh she's like pretending to be his new wife.

SPEAKER_01

Does he not know?

SPEAKER_02

Oh he knows, but he's I don't know if I don't remember why he goes along with it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I don't remember why he goes along with it. Okay. I didn't know if this was like a reverse overboard situation. Overboard's coming. Right, because like she's an overboard. Goldie Han, right is her name. Yeah, right. She she like falls off the boat, gets amnesia.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she's the poor homeless lady that moves into his house. Yeah. Yeah. So she's opposite. Right. Yeah. So it's like an architect or something. Okay, next we have Trading Mom. This isn't this girl Anna Klumsky or something that was in my never mind, that's coming too. Trading Mom is from 1994. Three siblings tired of their difficult mother, make her disappear, and then go to the local local market to pick out a new parent. Sissy Spacich, I think that's her name.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know. I mean I recognize her face. Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, next.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean that does seem fun as like a kid. This is kind of like the don't tell mom the babysitter's dead. And what's the other one where they like they go into what's the one where they go into the town and the little girl is Thor?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, uh Adventures in Babysitter? Yeah. That might be on her too. I don't remember. Okay.

SPEAKER_01

But anyways, that just reminds me of that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Next one is Stay Tuned with John Ritter from 1992.

SPEAKER_01

Nope.

SPEAKER_02

Baby, you missed out on so many good shows.

SPEAKER_01

I guess. I was outside playing and doing stuff, going into the mountains.

SPEAKER_02

So a husband and wife get pulled into a bizarre television set and must survive a series of twisted TV shows. I think this one that's on this picture, I think they're like throwing knives at him or something. Oh. It's like it's like something about the channel. It's like 666 channel. And I get sucked in, and it's like all those devilish game shows and things. Next one is Radio Flyer. Look at that baby Elijah Wood. He's just little. This is from 1992. A father remembers a difficult time from his childhood when he and his younger brother lived in the suburbs. This one's kind of sad. But it's a good uh it's kind of sad.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Yeah. I'm not gonna spoil anything for anyone on this one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. This is the one you were talking about with Leonardo DiCaprio.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, the next one?

SPEAKER_02

Oh wait, no, it's not.

SPEAKER_01

Because that's not legal.

SPEAKER_02

That I know actually don't have that one on here. It's I was thinking it was that one, but it's uh What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

SPEAKER_01

Is he does he play Gilbert Grape? Yep, he plays the Special Needs Boy. I don't even know what that movie's about.

SPEAKER_02

I just remember All I remember is he was disabled and his mom was overweight and never left the house, I believe.

SPEAKER_01

Like what do you call it? Like a hermit?

SPEAKER_02

Like a Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, hoarder hermit type. Yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I was thinking I had that. Sorry. I don't have What's Eating Gilbert Great's also a good show. Next one is Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.

SPEAKER_01

There's a horse?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, so this is from 1991. So this girl actually jumps off of high dives with her horse.

SPEAKER_01

What? Like like diving into water? Mm-hmm. What in a with a horse?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I don't know if it's like a competition thing. I don't remember.

SPEAKER_01

I can't imagine competition. I don't think I've ever seen anyone or heard of anyone doing this.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Who's the actress? I feel like I recognize her. So literally a horse is jumping off of a high dive with someone in the saddle?

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. Well, it it's a bareback.

SPEAKER_01

Well, okay.

SPEAKER_02

But yes. Gabrielle Anwar?

SPEAKER_01

Nope, not familiar.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, next we have Forever Young.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this was good.

SPEAKER_02

Mel Gibson.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

This one's from nineteen ninety-two during a cryogenics test. A pilot frozen in nineteen thirty-nine wakes up in nineteen ninety-two, but his body starts to age quickly.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, falls in love. Yeah, it's a good movie. Is this where who sings that song, Forever Young? Is that where it came from?

SPEAKER_02

I want to say it's Bob Dylan.

SPEAKER_01

Really? Who knows the Bob Dylan song? Was it for the movie? Yeah, that's yeah. Is it was it for the movie?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. Apparently not. That's a lot of capital caps on there. No. Forever Young.

SPEAKER_01

People are people are mad that you think or that I think that anyone thinks Forever Young the Song is a part of Forever Young the movie.

SPEAKER_02

How dare you think of such a thing?

SPEAKER_01

All caps and exclamation points.

SPEAKER_02

Next one is Man Without a Face.

SPEAKER_01

He's got a face is right there.

SPEAKER_02

Super ugly, but it seems like his face got burned. Do you remember this movie? No. Mel Gibson. I can't even see his face. My picture I got. No wonder. So Man Without a Face. Chuck wants to leave home but can't get into boarding school. He discovers that his neighbor is a recluse and used to be a former teacher, and half of his face looks like he got like a chemical burn or a fire burn or something on it. So I guess the kids are probably scared of him.

SPEAKER_01

I think I would be as a child.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. This was from 1993. It's not as fun when you don't know any of these movies. When I'm just reminiscing by myself.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you're just over there membering stuff, and I'm here. Just along for the ride.

SPEAKER_02

The next one is Man of the House.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh love, Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

SPEAKER_01

Every every girl in the early 90s or mid-90s did.

SPEAKER_02

He was cute.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this was the fun. This was the fun. What does he call him? What was his like animal name that he made for the stepdad, Chevy Chase? I forgot. It was like Num Nuts. Probably. Something like that. Like a chipmunk and something. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So this movie is from 1995. A young boy refuses to accept his mother's new boyfriend, even as the boyfriend tries to earn his respect. Next we have Jungle to Jungle.

SPEAKER_01

This is kind of like the movie Above It.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Except this one's from 97, and the man discovers his 13-year-old son was raised in the jungle, and he brings him to New York, turning both of their lives upside down.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. These are both like very similar movies. Yeah. But they're both fun.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Next one is First Kid with Sinbad.

SPEAKER_01

Sinbad. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know if I remember this one. We should watch those other ones with the kids though. Yeah. Think they would like them.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I need to put some of them on our list. So this is from 1996. Sinbad is a former boxer and now a Secret Service agent. He's assigned to protect the president's son, who does everything he can to make life difficult for his new bodyguard. Next one is Powder. Oh yeah. This one is from 1995. A brilliant homeschooled boy who is shunned after his last relative dies teaches the people in his town about connection, awareness, and generosity.

SPEAKER_01

And lightning.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and I don't know if I ever really quite understood this movie. I don't know if I saw the whole thing.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I only remember he was I don't I don't know if you can have degrees of being albino, but he was very very white. Powder white. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

That's why it's powder.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that's all I remember of that movie. Alright, next is Joe versus the volcano.

SPEAKER_01

Tom Hanks coming in strong again.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. So this is from 1990. When a hypochondriac learns he's dying, he agrees to throw himself into a volcano on a tropical island. Along the way, he learns what it means to truly live.

SPEAKER_01

Like the premise of this movie. Can you imagine being in like that that meeting when they come in? Like and they say that he's a hypochondriac. He learned he's gonna die, so then he's gonna throw himself in a volcano. What are you talking about? How's that a movie?

SPEAKER_02

It's a good movie though.

SPEAKER_01

It is a good movie. Who's the female lead in this?

SPEAKER_02

Meg Ryan.

SPEAKER_01

Because they did You Got Male together too, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I liked Meg Ryan. She was good.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Was she Top Gun?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, was she a Top Gun? You're not typing anything.

SPEAKER_01

Right, she's Goose's wife?

SPEAKER_02

Yep, she was on it.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, she's Goose's wife.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, next is Rackdoodle.

SPEAKER_01

I never saw this. I know this movie, but I've never actually seen it.

SPEAKER_02

Rockdood. Rockadoodle's from 1991. To defeat the evil grand duke of owls, a young boy who has been turned into a cat, joins barnyard animals to find the rooster who can raise the sun.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Next one is three ninjas. Yeah. This is a good one. This one's from 1992. Every summer, three brothers visit their grandfather, a ninjit ninjutsu master, who has trained them in the skill for years.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, this is for like every I'm gonna say boy, but really any child from like eight to twelve. Yep.

SPEAKER_02

Rocky loves Emily. Rocky loves Emily. That's a good one. Next one is pure country. Love George Strait.

SPEAKER_01

Is that who the guy is there? So he he's he's acting, or is this yeah. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

He's acting as a country singer.

SPEAKER_01

Big stretch there for good. Oh, did he win an Oscar?

SPEAKER_02

This is from 1992. Dusty grows tired of flashy stage effects and wonders what happened to the music that made him happy. He sets out to rediscover himself and his love for music.

SPEAKER_01

This is just he was tired of all that stuff, and so he made this movie.

SPEAKER_02

Probably his real life. Yeah, I was the same. Just changed his name. Maybe his real name's Dusty. I don't know. Or went by Dusty. Alright, next is Heavyweights.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah. Yeah, this is a good movie.

SPEAKER_02

I say something from this from our kids all the time. I don't remember. This is from 1995. Heavyweight kids are enticed to join a fancy weight loss camp only to discover it's run by a crazy former fitness instructor. So it's run the same, then they go every year, and then this guy buys it out, and he's like crazy person. Yeah. Ben Stiller's good. Next is Bednoms and Broomsticks.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think I've ever heard of this.

SPEAKER_02

I tried to watch this with our kids. They did not like it. It's from 1971. Yeah. An apprentice witch, three children, and a cynical magician search for a missing piece of magic spell to help defend Britain during World War II. Alright, next is Mannequin. Oh yeah. Some mannequins from 1987. A young artist creates a mannequin so lifelike that he falls in love with it. When he sees it in the store window, he gets a job there, and the mannequin magically comes to life.

SPEAKER_01

Or is he just crazy?

SPEAKER_02

He's really crazy.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Next is Money Pit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

We only watched this a few years ago, and I'd never heard of it before.

SPEAKER_01

We we watched this when we bought our current house.

SPEAKER_02

Because it is a money pit.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. We connected so much with this movie.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, our floor hasn't collapsed in yet, but we're we're similar.

SPEAKER_01

Stairs are still standing. Yeah, there's another Tom Hanks movie, huh?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Good job, Tom Hanks. Man, he's been he's been at it for a long time. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

He's good. Next one is Overboard. Yay. This one is from 1987. I know they redid this with what's her name. They redid it, and it wasn't as good. This original one is really good.

SPEAKER_01

Sure. Kurt Russell.

SPEAKER_02

After a spoiled heiress mistreats her a carpenter, she gets amnesia. The carpenter convinces her they are married and shows her what family life is like. It's pretty good.

SPEAKER_01

It's a good love story. It's a funny love story.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Next one is Splash. Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks again.

unknown

Man.

SPEAKER_02

Should have noticed how many Tom Hanks movies were in this. So this is from 1984. A man meets a mermaid he once saw as a boy and falls in love with her, not realizing her true identity.

SPEAKER_01

I I remember it's got the Twin Towers on it. Yeah, it does. I remember watching this on like TBS and stuff, like as it would be on for time to time. I don't think I've ever actually like watched it. Like sat down and watched it. The whole thing. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. It's like Little Mermaid, but real people kind of. Next is Sixteen Candles. Do you ever watch this?

SPEAKER_01

Um Molly Ringwald. Is that that girl's name? Yeah. Maybe. Is it like one of these guys drives a it's like Mona Lawn or something? Is that a different Molly Ringwald 80s teen movie?

SPEAKER_02

I don't remember. I haven't seen this for a long time. This is from 1984. On her 16th birthday, a high school girl feels forgotten by her family and faces a series of embarrassing moments, all while dealing with her crush. This guy, whatever his name is.

SPEAKER_01

It's tough to be 16.

SPEAKER_02

Mm-hmm. So hard. Next one is the outsiders.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's a good one.

SPEAKER_02

From 1983.

SPEAKER_01

Next one is That's all you're gonna say about the Outsiders?

SPEAKER_02

Alright. In 1964, Tulsa, two rival gangs, the Greasers and the Sox, clash, leading to tragedy when a fight goes too far.

SPEAKER_01

It's got a lot of big names in it. Like big names now, anyways.

SPEAKER_02

Patrick Swayze, isn't it?

SPEAKER_01

Uh huh. You get Patrick Swayze, the guy from Dylan. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Last name's Dylan. Alright, I'll pull it up.

SPEAKER_01

But then you got like Yeah. You can just pull the cast up for that. That movie. A lot of big names when they were first getting started. I mean Swayze was probably already a household name.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I did have Dirty Dancing on here, but I think I took it up.

SPEAKER_01

Because it's a well-known Yeah. Because it's well known?

SPEAKER_02

Well it's sorry. Matt Dillon.

SPEAKER_01

Matt Dillon. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

C. Thomas Howell. I don't know how he is. He's Pony Boy.

SPEAKER_01

Pony Boy.

SPEAKER_02

Rob Lo. Yeah. Emilio Estevez. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Ralph Matteo.

SPEAKER_02

Tom Cruise. Oh, I didn't see him in there. Diane Lane.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's all. Those are like the main, like the main guys.

SPEAKER_02

Alright. Next one is Big Business. Did you ever see this one? No. So these these two are so there were twins separated at birth. Uh-huh. Two sets of twins. Okay. So one went to a rich family and one went to a farm family. Farm poorer family. Yeah. And then yes, that's from 1988. Lily Tomlin and Bet Midler. So like one of the two pairs of sisters met or someone met. And so, anyways, it's it's a cute show. Right next is my girl.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

In 1991, Beta, whose mother has died and her father runs a funeral home, becomes upset when her dad falls for Shelly, a new makeup artist, and tries to keep them apart. Another good Macaulay Colkin movie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.

SPEAKER_01

This is the best Robin Hood.

SPEAKER_02

Kevin Costner.

SPEAKER_01

Ever.

SPEAKER_02

Loved Kevin Costner. Still do. He's good. I haven't watched Yellowstone, but yeah. This is from 1991.

SPEAKER_01

I think this one also has like a really great soundtrack. I say also because I'm thinking still of Forever Young, which does not have the song Forever Young. But I'm pretty sure this movie had a really good soundtrack.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Back when that was a thing. Like movie soundtracks were like Yeah, they don't do that anymore, do they? I don't think they really do.

SPEAKER_02

They don't really do CDs anymore either, though. Or next one is the bodyguard. Also, another Kevin Costner.

SPEAKER_01

He's on here. Him and Tom Hanks are on here several times.

SPEAKER_02

And Whitney Houston. I think this was rated R. I'm pretty sure I watched this at my friend's house to sleep over.

SPEAKER_01

And your parents never let you go to that friend's house again.

SPEAKER_02

I think I took it to her house.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, you're the bad influence. Where did you get it from?

SPEAKER_02

My grandma. My grandma gave us all sorts of tapes. So I had the tape.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, the VHS tape with like it written on there, the bodyguard in black marker.

SPEAKER_02

Yep. Sure did. Bodyguards from 1992. I did not have Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead, but that is a good one too.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. It is. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, do you have any movies?

SPEAKER_01

Like from when I was young? Yeah. So what what are these supposed to be?

SPEAKER_02

Just like old movies that people forgot about. Like you watched as a kid.

SPEAKER_01

Most of them that I probably watched as a kid, I probably shouldn't have been watching.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, we have an episode for now.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so I'll just keep them then. Till then.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Alright. Even though bigger movies got more attention, these hidden gems can still surprise and entertain us. By sharing them again, we celebrate variety in movie history and might help others find new favorites among films that were nearly forgotten. Remember, even a small act of kindness can be someone's beacon in their darkest moment. Choose kindness every day. Reach out to someone today. You have the power to change your life. Be the signal of hope this world needs.
