Welcome to the Cashley Show. We are Kevin and Ashley.
SPEAKER_00Hello.
SPEAKER_02We start this podcast after recent tragedies to take a break from negativity and discover the good things happening all around us. We're starting out with Kevin Shoutout. Who are you choosing today, Kevin?
SPEAKER_00I wasn't prepared. Ready for this. Yeah, I don't know if if my sister Monica listens or not, but shout out to her. Got to see her this weekend. That was good. Didn't get to hang out with her as much as I wanted to. We had to do some things, but yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Sorry.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Hi Monica.
SPEAKER_02Hello, Monica. Why do seagulls sorry, Fran, time for laughing. Starting without it. Why do seagulls fly over the sea?
SPEAKER_00Because they're seagulls.
SPEAKER_02If they flew over the bay, they'd be called bagels. Bagels.
SPEAKER_00Nice.
SPEAKER_02I liked it. Alright, today's episode is the ultimate guide to America's Most Bizarre Driving Laws. Most drivers know to stop at red lights and follow the speed limit, but what about rules that sound like they belong in a comedy? Across the country, state and local governments have created some truly odd driving laws. Whether these laws had a purpose or just leftovers from another era, they show that driving in the USA is never dull. Some of these may or may not be current laws, but they were laws at one time.
SPEAKER_00Sometime. Okay.
SPEAKER_02They are not in any order, just rando laws.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02First up is Alabama. It is illegal to drive while blindfolded.
SPEAKER_00As it should be.
SPEAKER_02I feel like there shouldn't need to be a law for that. Right. Just common sense.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02You can't see, you can't drive. You can't see, you can't drive.
SPEAKER_00Sorry, people who can't see. It's just kind of how it goes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Next is Eureka, California.
SPEAKER_00Hey.
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_00Well, it's just kind of close by. Not really close by, but.
SPEAKER_02No. Using the road as a bed is illegal.
SPEAKER_00Hmm. That does sound like a California statue.
SPEAKER_02I feel like they don't care about that. They let people sleep wherever they want in California.
SPEAKER_00Well, they have to make it illegal so that if they want to remove them, then they can.
SPEAKER_02But mostly they don't want to remove people. Next is Nevada. Riding a camel on the highway is illegal.
SPEAKER_00I feel like sure, Nevada's a desert, but there's no abundance of camels.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. This is a wrong desert. Next is Alaska. Driving with a dog tied to the roof of your car is illegal.
SPEAKER_00Where are you supposed to put him then?
SPEAKER_02Should be illegal everywhere. Shouldn't tire live animals to the roof of a car.
SPEAKER_00You want him to sit in the cab with me? It's an Alaskan dog. That's basically a wolf, I bet.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's not good riding in the cab.
SPEAKER_02Your dog rides in the cab.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, because he's not a wolf. He's an American dog. He's a conus. Conus dog. All right, in backyard beast.
SPEAKER_02It's big boy. In Hilton Head, South Carolina, storing trash in your vehicle is illegal.
SPEAKER_00How do you know if I'm storing it?
SPEAKER_02Haven't you seen people whose cars are completely full of stuff? Like you can't even see out the passenger window because it's That's not garbage, that's treasures. No.
SPEAKER_00I need those.
SPEAKER_02You do not have a car like that.
SPEAKER_00I'm just thinking, like in the what is the thing on the side of the door, right? Like down the bottom. Oh, yeah. Like the I don't know what to call that. The opening, the slot.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, where you like put your garbage. Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You're storing your garbage. Illegal.
SPEAKER_02The cop sees it. Yeah. You got a ticket.
SPEAKER_00No, you get a ticket.
SPEAKER_02I would for sure get a ticket. Definitely have stuff in the garbage hole. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Garbage hold the garbage slot.
SPEAKER_02And next up in Arizona, I'm sure this is a specific city, but driving in reverse on a public road is illegal. Don't you try to parallel park.
SPEAKER_00Gotta loop it around. Just thinking like, is that backwards going the wrong way or backwards going the right way? Like your car's backwards, but you're headed the correct way in traffic. Is that what they're trying to say?
SPEAKER_02Doesn't matter, as long as you're turning around to watch where you're going. Yes. Our one of our kids is learning to drive. And I told them, You need to learn to drive without the camera on the car that your school provides.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because we don't have that.
SPEAKER_00We're not fancy like that.
SPEAKER_02But I have to do it in a certain way. Like, well, figure it out. Because you can't drive like that. You can't parallel park. All right.
SPEAKER_00Next is only one of our vehicles even has sensors to even beep when you get close to something. Yeah. Resident will just let you plow right into whatever you're backing up to.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Next in Marietta, Georgia. Spitting from a car or bus is illegal. But you can spit from a truck.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that makes sense. Them's as men.
SPEAKER_02I gotta spit. Next is Arkansas. It's illegal to honk your horn after 9 p.m. outside any establishment that serves sandwiches or cold drinks.
SPEAKER_00That's very specific.
SPEAKER_02Mexican food? Maybe if they don't serve cold drones.
SPEAKER_00You even have one of those special horns.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I guess they call it serve cold drinks, so maybe that's not.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_02Never mind then. Alright, next is your brain teaser.
SPEAKER_00Okay. I have not been doing well with these.
SPEAKER_02What's special about these three words? Job.
SPEAKER_00Job.
SPEAKER_02Polish. Polish. Erb.
SPEAKER_00Erb. Job, polish, herb. I will continue my streak of being bad at this. I don't know.
SPEAKER_02They are pronounced differently when when the first letter is capitalized.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02Job, job.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02Polish polish. Herb, herb. Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, when they're proper nouns. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Alrighty. It's kind of funny. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Alright, in Dunn, North Carolina, where playing Dun. Dun D-U-N-N.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02Playing in traffic is illegal.
SPEAKER_00Where are we supposed to play? Our parents always said to go play in the street.
SPEAKER_02Tree to have traffic in your streets.
SPEAKER_00That's true.
SPEAKER_02In California, leaping from a moving vehicle traveling at 65 miles per hour or faster is illegal. 64? Okay.
SPEAKER_00That's fine.
SPEAKER_02What if you're being kidnapped and you're jumping from the car? Oh, I would, but now you got a ticket. Damn. You're kidnapped and then you got a ticket.
SPEAKER_00Just don't leap. Like just fall, like go dead. Just fall out. I didn't leap.
SPEAKER_02Break your neck.
SPEAKER_00You just gotta roll and you're fine. Yeah, 65 miles an hour.
SPEAKER_02That is you're probably gonna die.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Does it really need to be illegal at that point?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02In Minnesota, planning to cross the state line with a duck or chicken on your head is not allowed.
SPEAKER_00Just planning on it. Not even doing it, just planning it. You thinking about doing that? Illegal.
SPEAKER_02I heard Sue's going to travel across the state line with a duck on her head.
SPEAKER_00Just busting people. Telling the cops. Yep.
SPEAKER_02Spreading rumors, getting people arrested.
SPEAKER_00Saving ducks.
SPEAKER_02In Tennessee, shooting wells from a movie vehicle is illegal.
SPEAKER_00Tennessee? I do I'm not great at geography, but I'm pretty sure that's a landlocked state. Is that why it's illegal? Because you gotta shoot across a couple other states to get it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. All right. In Delaware and New York, planning a costume change in your car, not in these states, taking off your clothes in your car could get you in trouble. Changing your clothes in your car.
SPEAKER_00Even if it's not moving, I can understand while while driving.
SPEAKER_02What if you're changing your baby's clothes because they poop their pants like an infant? Is that also illegal? Because you took off their dirty clothes?
SPEAKER_00But you're not changing your own clothes. Is that what the law says? You can't change your clothes. So as long as someone else is changing you, you're golden.
SPEAKER_02In Washington in 1894, a law was passed. If you ride an unattractive horse, you could get a $300 fine.
SPEAKER_00$300 in 1894?
SPEAKER_02The town got rid of this law in 1990.
SPEAKER_00Took them a long time. A lot of ugly horses.
SPEAKER_02A lot of $300 fines, I'm sure. In Georgia, the state constitution provides that legislators are usually immune from arrest while the legislature is in session, except for treason, felony, or breach of peace. Traffic violations and speeding tickets count as breach of peace or minor crimes. In the past, state patrol officers would give lawmakers a legislative courtesy warning instead of a ticket if they were driving to the Capitol. Sorry. You don't have different laws than us. Yeah, special privilege.
SPEAKER_00You get to drive fast because you're late to the capital.
SPEAKER_02Seems like a year problem.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_02You should have left earlier. Sorry, Georgia. Seems silly. Kansas. If you squeal your tires here, you could get you can end up in jail for 30 days for having noisy tires.
SPEAKER_00Jeez, that seems excessive. No street racing, boys. Yeah, 30 days? Why squeal the tires on the suburban just making a U-turn?
SPEAKER_02You should have made a slower U-turn. Yeah, apparently.
SPEAKER_0030 days in jail.
SPEAKER_02Alright, time for Cashley's take.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Here we go.
SPEAKER_02Kevin, is silence awkward?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I think yes. How come? I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Let you undo some silence right now.
SPEAKER_02No. I don't like it. I'll just go on if you want to stop talking.
SPEAKER_00So as long as there's some sort of noise, even though I'm silent. Like if I'm sitting here silent looking at you, it's not weird. Or it is weird, so you just start talking and ignore me.
SPEAKER_02I would just talk. I fill up the space. How come? I don't like silence. Why? I don't know. I do feel like it's awful. I went on a date once. We went to a jazz game and he was very shy. I talked the whole time because I was just like, this is so weird, like just sitting and not talking. Let's I'll just talk the whole time.
SPEAKER_00But it's a jazz game.
SPEAKER_02Well, like on the drive there.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. I thought you just did you talk through the whole game? No. No wonder you guys didn't get married.
SPEAKER_02No, I didn't talk the whole time.
SPEAKER_00He's like, She will not shut up.
SPEAKER_02He probably did think that because I just talked the whole time. But I just feel like it's so weird when no one's speaking. One of our neighbors loves it and I just I don't know what to do with it. I don't know what to do with silence.
SPEAKER_00Just enjoy another person.
SPEAKER_02I don't know how to do that. I just have to talk.
SPEAKER_00Huh.
SPEAKER_02What are you thinking? Does that answer a lot of questions for you?
SPEAKER_00It is interesting. I now I remember seeing like a I don't know, YouTube short or something like that, where like it was always like there's this guy and had his girlfriend or whatever. And I guess they had something going where it's like she would always copy what he was doing, like it was some sort of I don't know, thing that they did. And he said, I think I finally figured out something you won't be able to copy me on. And he just put his hands behind his back and just looked at her. And so she did that. She put her hands behind her back and she looked at him and she was like, Is that is that it? Is this was that it? And he just continued to just look at her without saying anything. And so she like looked him up and down. She liked she's like, Well, what is it? Well, like, what are you doing? Well, like the whole thing idea of being silent, like was isn't even a concept or theme in her in her mind.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So that's interesting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I will try and force silence.
SPEAKER_02I'll talk to you or walk away because I can't handle it. I hate it. Our daughter does it, and I'm like, We're not doing anything. I know. I have to do something. I can't just sit here in silence. I'm physically unable to just sit in silence with someone else in the room. Okay. Alright, that was long. Next. Massachusetts. Having a gorilla in your back seat is strictly forbidden.
SPEAKER_00They can ride up front.
SPEAKER_02I guess so. Can you even have a gorilla?
SPEAKER_00And you're not in Alaska, so you could tie it to the roof of your car and be fine.
SPEAKER_02In Connecticut, leave the camouflage paint at home. Hunting from your car is not just a bad idea, it's against the law.
SPEAKER_00Isn't it against the law everywhere? It should be. I'm pretty sure it is. I don't think you can fire a gun from a vehicle.
SPEAKER_02You're driving and you shoot it and it kickback, hits you in the face, and knocks you out, and you drive off the cliff.
SPEAKER_00That took some turns. Sure. That's maybe one of the reasons why they don't want you to do that.
SPEAKER_02All right. Next up, Missouri. Thinking about honking someone else's horn, keep your hands to yourself because using another person's horn could get you into legal trouble.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Serious about their horns out there in the south, east? I don't call that. Yeah. Because Arkansas has their horn. Yeah. Right? They're serious about horns out there.
SPEAKER_02I really hate people honking their horn. Like most of the time people are.
SPEAKER_00They probably just trying to feel silence.
SPEAKER_02Most of the time people are just being rude about it.
SPEAKER_00So do you not ever honk at anyone? Like if it's a light turns green and they're not going?
SPEAKER_02It'll take probably about 20 seconds before I'll do it.
SPEAKER_00The light's gonna turn yellow again.
SPEAKER_02I won't. I won't do it. I have a little bit- I have honked at people. Next. Hawaii. Driving with your hazard lights on? In paradise, that's not allowed. Save those flashing lights for when your car is stopped. Don't drive slow somewhere.
SPEAKER_00So then you don't have your hazards on and you're driving slow.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And now you're a hazard, but nobody knows. Okay.
SPEAKER_02Just pull over.
SPEAKER_00I guess. You're either speed limit or you are not going at all.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Ohio, have time to spare and a full tank. Just don't drive around the town square more than 100 times, or you're breaking the law.
SPEAKER_00100.
SPEAKER_02100 times.
SPEAKER_00Somebody that's like a town square counter tallying all these.
SPEAKER_02In Idaho Falls, Idaho. Idaho Falls. If you're 89 and want to ride a motorcycle, you'll have to keep dreaming.
SPEAKER_00Ageist.
SPEAKER_02The law says only those 88 and younger can ride. How's that illegal law? Because it's small Idaho Falls.
SPEAKER_00I wonder what happened to make that oh.
SPEAKER_02Right. Because someone could like die of a heart attack at really like any age.
SPEAKER_00Right, yeah. There's all sorts of so like why?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. All right. In Oklahoma, eager to see what happens next in your comic, make sure you pull over first because reading comics while driving is off limits.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yes. All reading should be off limits.
SPEAKER_00Stop changing your clothes, stop reading, just drive. Okay. We still have to drive.
SPEAKER_02Even if you do have one that self-drives, you should probably make sure it's driving correctly. It's your life in there. In Illinois, forget about self-driving. Driving without a steering wheel is not allowed. So keep your hands at 10 and 2, or you might get in triple.
SPEAKER_00Driving without a steering wheel?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I don't know how you drive without a steering wheel.
SPEAKER_00I may get like a pair of vice grips that clamped down on the steering column.
SPEAKER_02Like yeah, otherwise, how do you next is the newly wed game?
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02How does your spouse like their steak cooked? Kevin likes medium. Right?
SPEAKER_00You were close. Medium rare?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I was close.
SPEAKER_00And what am I? So there's medium, then there's well done. Is there something in between that? Medium well done.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Is that what it is?
SPEAKER_00That's kind of a dumb middle. Just add them. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You got it right. I am medium well. Yeah. I got it wrong again.
SPEAKER_00It's okay. You don't order my food, so it's fine.
SPEAKER_02That's true. But I'm with you in your order food.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but you're focused on your food.
SPEAKER_02Next is South Carolina. Oh, nope. Next is Kansas. Oh.
SPEAKER_00Switching them up.
SPEAKER_02Planning a fried chicken road trip. Sorry, but transporting dead poultry on Kansas Avenue in Topeka is forbidden. Just Kansas Avenue. Topeka Avenue. Topeka. Nope. Sorry. Kansas Avenue in Topeka. Topeka. Sorry. Mixed it up. Yep. Next is Rockland, Maryland. Like to swear when you drive? Yes, sometimes I do. You might want to keep quiet because swearing from your car could get you a ticket. You bleepity bleep bleep. Cop. And you got a ticket.
SPEAKER_00They would have to like see you and hear you and be able to like prove that I don't know. That seems like but I did so many years ago. I don't know. Ten, fifteen years ago, maybe something like that. Back when I used to play video games. So I was playing FIFA and I think I was playing on PlayStation. I don't know. Maybe Xbox. I don't know. One of those. And was not doing well. And might have sworn a couple times. I played like two or three matches. And then like it brought up something on the screen that was like about my it's not like I was playing online, like against anyone. So I was just playing by myself, like just playing, and it was like something about if you don't like dial back something something about like my language during the game or something like that.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02But you're not playing against anyone.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I don't know. And so it must have been an Xbox. I think it had like the connect like camera connected up to it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00So like it it was listening and knew that I was and it was so long ago. That's weird and creepy. Right?
SPEAKER_02Guess how much worse it probably is now.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02Alright. July 10th is national pina colada, French Fry and Kitten Day.
SPEAKER_00Kitten?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. I like to say Pina Colada and French fries better.
SPEAKER_00Sure. They taste way better in kittens. Kittens are cute, but here's a lot of work. Here's a I don't know, what do you call them? Cashley's take? Mm-hmm. Best French fries from a fast food restaurant. This also could be a newlywed thing. Because I think I know where you would say.
SPEAKER_02You go first.
SPEAKER_00You you want me to say where I think yours? Or what?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, I don't, but I don't know what yours is. You don't love French fries. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_00That's mine. I'm gonna say McDonald's. No? Okay. Where?
SPEAKER_02It's the burger place we go to.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_02What's Kevin's favorite French fry? I'm gonna say Freddy's.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's a pretty good guess. Like Freddy's, I mostly like their French fries simply because of their jalapeno fry sauce.
SPEAKER_02So then Five Guys.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Five Guys what?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I think I've eaten at Five Guys once.
SPEAKER_00Five Guys has regular fries, and then they have I have no idea. Cajun fries.
SPEAKER_02I had no idea.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Those are the ones I like. I like the Cajun fries from Five Guys.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think I've eaten there once many years ago. I have no idea even what they have. Besides hamburgers. Yeah, that's Freddy's also has hamburgers, and I don't think I have every in there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02In Texas. If you have a passenger who has been drinking, make sure they sit in the back seat. If a drunk passenger is close enough to reach a steering wheel, you could get a ticket. Seems like been a little jerking on the steering wheel from the drunk passenger that's caused this law.
SPEAKER_00Happens often, I guess, huh?
SPEAKER_02In Minnesota, have muddy tires in Minnetonka? Is how you say it? Minnitonka? Minnetonka.
SPEAKER_00Minnetonka is how I would say it, but I don't know.
SPEAKER_02Not here. Leaving dirt or sticky stuff behind. Sticky stuff. Public nuisance. Sticky stuff. I ran through the honey before I drove through here.
SPEAKER_00What happened?
SPEAKER_02Alright, and finally in Florida.
SPEAKER_00We haven't had any Florida ones. It's kind of surprising.
SPEAKER_02You must pay the parking meter if you tie an elephant, goat, or alligator to the parking meter. Alright, Kevin, would you rather would you rather be reincarnated as a fly or just stop existing when you die?
SPEAKER_00I would just stop existing.
SPEAKER_02Me too. Flies are awful. Yeah. They're disgusting. They gross me out a lot. From coast to coast, these unusual driving laws remind us that the road is full of surprises, both in what you see and what is written in the law. Next time you drive, watch out for more than just traffic signs. You never know what strange rule might be waiting for you. Safe and legal travels. Do you have anything else, Kev?
SPEAKER_00There's no laws anywhere about like your car leaving the ground, leaving the roadway, like jumping. I mean you don't have to look it up. Just I'm sure there's some sort of laws about that. Like your tires have to be on the on the pavement. Dukes of Hazard stuff is illegal. Or is it not? Is there no no laws about that? Totally fine for your car to fly through the air?
SPEAKER_02Not seeing that specifically. On a second. So there's no single specific law against jumping your car. However, having all four tires leave the road on a public street is illegal. Isn't that jumping in the car?
SPEAKER_00That's what I would say.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Remember, even a small act of kindness can be someone's beacon in their darkest moment. Choose kindness every day. Reach out to someone today. You have the power to change a life. Be the signal of hope this world needs.
