Do You Remember the Last Time You Did Something Spontaneous? | Why Adulthood Makes Everything Feel Planned
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
There was a time when you would call a friend without rehearsing what to say first. Make plans the same day they happened. Leave the house just because. Somewhere in adulthood that ease quietly disappeared and now even simple things come with a mental checklist of effort, timing, and energy you may not have. In this episode we talk honestly about why spontaneity starts to feel harder as we grow up, how the weight of responsibilities and mental load changes the way we move through life, and why it is not a character flaw that you now need three days notice and a full night of sleep before saying yes to anything. You did not lose your sense of adventure. Life just got heavier and nobody warned you that would happen.

Welcome And This Week's Big Question Is
SpeakerHey friends, welcome back to another episode of Becoming with Kethney. Now, today I would like to talk about why does everything have to feel planned and has to be planned in adulthood? Have you ever noticed how much less spontaneous adulthood actually is? And I feel like somewhere along the way, even simple things had to have a plan. We always had to think about it first. And that's what I want to talk about. I started thinking about how different this felt in childhood when we were younger, in our
When Plans Used To Be Easy
Speakeradolescence. We were very spontaneous, whether it was calling our friends whenever the thought crossed our mind. Or if we wanted to go out without making plans, send a quick text, meet your friend at a certain location, and go enjoy that activity. Could be something as simple as, let's go watch a movie, let's go to the mall, let's go out to eat, let's go get some ice cream, let's just go walk around. Texted them, you met up. Didn't have to be something that you planned days or weeks in advance. When we were younger, we made plans in the moment. There was so much less overthinking. I mean, that spontaneity, it felt natural. But now I feel like everything is just more planned and less spontaneous.
Schedules, Mental Load, And Energy Math
SpeakerAnd I don't even think it's intentional. As an adult, we have responsibilities. We have to work around our schedules, varying different schedules. If you have kids, if you don't have kids, your work schedules, what does that look like? Are you first shift, second shift? Do you only work three days a week? Do you work 10 hours a day? Do you work eight hours a day? All of that plays into it. So as an adult, you often have to plan around your obligations. And we're more mentally exhausted. So anytime we have to do something, we have to really plan around our energy levels. Life as an adult starts to require more from you mentally. So now even small things start turning into this mental process that you need to evaluate. Deciding if you feel like going out. Deciding whether or not you have the mental capacity, the energy for it. You need to think about the timing. It's not like you can drop everything in a moment's notice and go do something spontaneous. You often are deciding if something is worth doing. And the thing is, sometimes the hesitation isn't about the ask or the thing or the event itself, but it's about the effort attached to it. So as adults, we start calculating the energy without even realizing it. And I think that is the part that people don't often talk about. Being spontaneous, that spontaneity that we had in our youth starts feeling less natural. Comfort and routine is what is more appealing to us. And I think this is key. Our free time feels more valuable. And the thing is, spontaneity, it starts feeling different when your time and your energy no longer feels unlimited. But hear me out. I don't think this means that in adulthood we've
Stop Optimizing Every Moment
Speakerbecome boring. I think that's the lens that we had of adulthood when we ourselves were in our adolescence or we were children. We thought adults, were boring. Now, being an adult, I don't think that's the right adjective. I think adulthood just changes your relationship with time. Because responsibilities create mental weight, the energy that you give becomes intentional for a reason. So naturally, adulthood makes you become more aware of things that cost you time, cost, take up space emotionally, physically. You know what? Maybe the goal isn't to force spontaneity. I think we just need to notice how much we overthink things and just allowing ourselves to act without necessarily overprocessing everything. But most importantly, to not let adulthood remove all flexibility and lightness. Not every decision needs to be optimized because sometimes the best moments happen before we have time to overthink them. So I'm curious, do you feel spontaneous as an adult? What's something you
Listener Reflection Questions And Goodbye
Speakerused to do without hesitation that now you feel like you overthink and you have to process? If you've been feeling this too, adulthood is less spontaneous, you're not alone. Adulthood naturally changes how we move through life. Our awareness, it matters. Maybe becoming an adult isn't losing spontaneity completely. Maybe it's learning how to make space for it again.
