Defining Wisdom From Above

The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. Let's set our minds and our hearts toward those realities of wisdom on today's evening mindset.

Purity At The Heart Of Wisdom

Carey 1:28

But we've got to be careful. There's a wisdom our world tries to advance that is not the same kind of wisdom the Bible talks about. Here in James 3, 17, we get a great description of what James calls wisdom from above. So that's the kind of wisdom God gives to his people as they ask. Let's look at it. It says, Wisdom from above is first pure. So wisdom wants what is right, what is best, what is righteous. That's wisdom. Wisdom's heartbeat is for the holiness and righteousness of God to be seen in every circumstance. So that means in our lives as well as in our behavior.

Peaceable, Gentle, Open To Reason

Carey 2:16

Wisdom from above is then peaceable. So it's not contentious, is not picking fights. You see, what we see on social media most of the time, the debates going back and forth, man, some of the people who claim to be Christians just don't seem like they're portraying Christianity very well because they're not peaceable. It says it's also gentle. Man, that goes right along with peaceable, doesn't it? And open to reason. So in other words, willing to discuss, not feeling threatened, ready to hear the argument on the other side, not abandoning truth, but willing to listen and let others be heard.

Mercy, Good Fruit, Impartial, Sincere

Carey 3:00

Wisdom from above is also full of mercy and good fruits, and is impartial and sincere. Our God is so gracious that He wants to give us this kind of wisdom. We'll close our eyes and boom, here it is.

Prayer And Closing Appeal

Carey 4:12

We need this wisdom from above. We want it to reflect you and your presence in our lives, Lord. Enable us to recognize worldly wisdom and reject it. And to do so based on these criteria that you give us. Show us how to be full of mercy and good fruit, how to be impartial and sincere. Because we are secure in who you are and who you've made us to be. Do this for us even as we rest in Jesus' name.
