Setting The Evening Mindset
CareyThe Lord God says, My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. That's our evening mindset. Ponder it as the music plays. You see, we live in a world that says human beings are the most important thing on the planet. We are the be-all, end-all of everything. And that simply isn't true. Isaiah 55, verses 8 through 9, God points out how untrue that is. For our good, actually. He wants us to recognize that the things he's doing in our lives, though many times perplexing and even unsettling and difficult, are things that have not happened by accident or outside his awareness. He says his thoughts are not our thoughts, and his ways are not our ways. He does things in God-sized ways, according to God-sized reasons. And he gives us an illustration. He says, for as the heavens are higher than the earth, he's talking about outer space, the stars, the planets, the galaxies. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. So in other words, he's giving us the understanding that his perspective is one of oversight. He's looking over it all. He sees everything. Which is why the things that are happening that may not make sense to us are still, nevertheless, firmly in his control and in his grasp. Oh, friends, as you go to bed tonight, rest in that reality. No matter what you're going through, God, your God, knows what he's doing. And he is for you. You care for us. And you're caring for us in the midst of our difficulties that we don't understand, that bring stress into our lives, and maybe even are making us sick. Lord, we want to rest in you. Teach us how tonight to go to bed with assurance and comfort from the fact that your ways and your thoughts are higher than ours. We rest in you today.
