[10] Teach me to do your will, for you are my God! Let your good Spirit lead me on level ground! (ESV)

SUMMARY

We sit with Proverbs 16:9 and face the tension between our plans and God’s control, then let that truth settle our minds for sleep. We admit how often we try to steer outcomes, and we choose humility and comfort in the God who establishes our steps.

• the idea that we are always planning, even in the moment
• why Proverbs says our hearts plan while the Lord establishes steps
• the fear that planning feels pointless and why that misses the point
• how failed plans can become comfort instead of regret
• a closing prayer for trust, surrender, and restful sleep

Proverbs 16:9 Read Aloud

Carey

The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord, Yahweh, establishes his steps. This humbling thought comes from Proverbs chapter 16, verse number nine, and is a powerful wisdom tonic for us as we prepare for our evening mindset meditation.

Planning Versus God’s Control

Carey

Either way, you're actually planning. One way you're doing it intentionally, the other, you're just doing it in the spur of the moment, but still it's your plan. It's the thing you want to do that you're trying to carry out. And the writer of Proverbs, in this case we think it's Solomon, is telling us the heart of a man plans his way. So in other words, each one of us has our own desires for what we want to do in any given situation. We have a thought, we have an idea, we think it's a good idea, and so we make a plan to put it into practice or to take action on it. That's a normal thing. But there's something else going on that Solomon wants us to ponder for a moment, and that is that the Lord establishes our steps. So in other words, we may make lots of great plans, but God is the one who in the end makes sure that our steps, our actual activities, are bringing about what he intends.

Humility And Comfort In Providence

Carey

You see, this can feel a little foreboding to us or a little uh pointless to us. You know, why make plans at all if God's the one establishing our steps? But that's not the point Solomon's trying to make with this proverb. Solomon is trying to get us to see that even should we make plans that don't work out, or plans that were, let's admit it, stupid, the Lord establishes our steps. He's the one in control. He's going to work things out the way they should be. And friends, there's great comfort in that. Solomon wants us to receive a dose of humility that lets us see just how big our God is.

A Bedtime Prayer Of Trust

Carey

I've planned many things in my life that I'm so glad didn't turn out according to my plan. Instead, you used them for your plan to come about. It's such a comfort to me to know that I'm in the hands of a God so capable. That my decisions, good or bad, cannot thwart or change your plan. You are going to bring about good. And in my life, especially, because I've placed my faith in Jesus. You've promised good to me through him. And I rest in you. As we prepare for sleep tonight, Lord, remind us just how powerful you are.
