John 14:27 Evening Meditation

Carey

As Jesus was preparing his disciples for his departure, he said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. That's our evening meditation from John fourteen, verse number twenty-seven.

Why The Disciples Felt Shaken

Carey

That he was going to leave them. They couldn't comprehend it at first. You can see it in the context of John 13. They just don't understand. Because in their minds, they are right on the verge of God's kingdom coming to Israel and being established to overthrow the Roman rulers. And they just can't conceive what Jesus, what are you talking about? Leaving us. You're the king. You're the Messiah, the deliverer. How are you gonna leave us? And Jesus unpacks the truth.

Peace Rooted In Knowing God

Carey

That this is a kingdom not of this world. It's a different kind of thing he's doing. He begins to help them understand that they are going to be left behind in a better state than the one they're in at that very moment. They don't understand it. But he begins by saying, peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. You see, Jesus is not troubled or worried. Because, number one, he knows who his father is, the creator of all that exists. Nothing outside his control or his wisdom or his ability. And then secondly, Jesus knows who he is. And so he's at peace. And he says, I'm giving you that peace. You're gonna know that you're mine. You're my disciples. You're gonna be protected by me as long as you need to be. You're gonna be given the strength and the endurance to fulfill the kingdom mission I'm giving you. Don't let your hearts be troubled. Don't be afraid. Embrace my peace, my peace that is not a feeling. It's a knowing. A knowing who I am and who you are because of me.

Living For Eternity Tonight

Carey

But they're all earthly. They're things that trouble us for the here and now, but in eternity, they won't matter. Lord, enable us to live now in light of eternity. Enable us to live in light of who you are through the peace that you give. The knowledge of who your father is, the knowledge of who you are, the knowledge of who we are in you. And help us as we lay our heads down tonight to feel that peace, to rest in it, to go to sleep knowing you are in control of everything.
