Scripture Reading And Meditation Theme

Carey

As Jesus was nearing the end of his earthly life, he said this to his disciples in John 16, 33. I have said these things to you that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation, but take heart, I have overcome the world. That's our evening mindset meditation for today.

Why Jesus Promises Peace

Carey

He says, I've said these things to you, so that in me you may have peace. Now that sounds wonderful. We all would love to have the peace of Jesus, but he's got a specific reason in mind for them having this peace.

Tribulation And Coming Persecution

Carey

See, he says, in the world you will have tribulation. Jesus knew what was coming for them, as they served as leaders in his fledgling church. He knew the persecution that was going to come from the Jewish authorities. He knew how Rome was going to get in on the act and eventually be some of the worst persecutors of the Christian church. And he knew that these men were the ones who were going to endure that. Yet, by remembering his teaching and applying the truth of it to his life, they could have peace.

Jesus Overcomes And We Rest

Carey

You see, the world has tribulation, but Jesus has overcome the world. His presence in our life makes us impervious to the troubles of the world. Really. On a heart level, on a spirit level, we are able to rest in Jesus because he has overcome. And one day we will experience the result of that overcoming victory of his by being with him forever and eternity.

Night Prayer And Surrender

Carey

So as you lay your head down, whatever tribulations or troubles you've been going through, lay them at the foot of Jesus and remind yourself that in him you have peace. Show them how to come to you in dependence, in reliance on you, and to find in you all they need to face the troubles of their lives. That they can have peace, that they can rest knowing you are fully in control.
