TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE:

Colossians 3:3–4

[3] For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. [4] When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (ESV)

SUMMARY

We read Colossians 3:3–4 and sit with the shock of it: we have died, and our real life is hidden with Christ in God. We trace how the old self is buried with Jesus, how new life rises with him, and how that truth becomes peace as we fall asleep and confidence when we wake.

• reading Colossians 3:3–4 as an evening mindset
• naming the old self as dead at the cross with Jesus
• connecting sin’s wages to the necessity of spiritual death
• receiving new life through Christ’s resurrection
• resting in the security of being hidden with Christ in God
• looking ahead to appearing with Christ in glory
• praying for deeper understanding, peace at night, and power in the morning

Scripture For Tonight’s Mindset

Carey

Colossians three, verses three and four. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Ponder those words as the music plays for this evening mindset. Even

The Old Self Dies With Christ

Carey

though at this very moment we are alive. But Paul is wanting us to take our minds there, to recognize that on a spiritual level something about us has died. It's our old self, that old sinful self that he redeemed at the cross. And when that self died, it died at the cross with Jesus. It was buried in the grave with Jesus. Because that old self was steeped in and identified by sin. And the wages of sin is death. So it had to die if we were to have new life. And when Jesus rose from the grave, he rose with that new life and he brought us with him.

New Life Raised From The Grave

Carey

And now that he has risen from the grave and he has ascended into heaven, our life, the real you, the real me, is hidden with Christ in God. We are as secure as we could ever be. And he says, when Christ, who is our life, appears, then we also will appear with him in glory. What Paul is trying to get us to understand is that for the rest of this human life, Jesus Christ lives his life through us. And on the day he returns, everything will be brought into a full culmination of what he has intended for us as his children, as partakers of the divine nature, as Peter says.

Hidden With Christ And Secure

Carey

So as you lay your head down, think on these amazing truths and let the life of Jesus in you bring you peace.

Restful Prayer For Confidence

Carey

As we think about these realities that are far beyond our comprehension, help us understand, help us grasp the amazing supernatural nature of what you've done here, that our old self is dead, and we now have a new life that is Jesus' life living in us and through us. Enable us to rest tonight in the confidence of that truth and to wake in the morning with a new sense of your presence and of your power, with confidence that you are in us and for us, ready to live through us.
