Psalm 37:7 Evening Meditation
CareyBe still before the Lord, and wait patiently for him. Fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices. This counsel, this instruction comes from Psalm thirty-seven, verse seven. It is our evening meditation.
Why We Fret Over Injustice
CareyThe temptation to fret over the prosperity of someone else, especially those who are doing evil. You see, we watch people who do bad things, and we feel the effect of those bad things on our own lives, and we get kind of frustrated because it seems like they're not answering for their evil. They're actually prospering instead. And it frustrates us, and we begin to worry and fret and try and figure that out and ask all kinds of questions of God. God, why this? Why that? How can that person do this? How can you let that happen? And you see what happens?
Stillness, Humility, And God’s Rule
CareyOur lack of understanding about the situation turns into suspicion of God Himself. And what is David's advice? Be still before the Lord. That's a place of humility. It's a place of recognizing He is the one in control. He is God above gods, King above kings. He is sovereign over the entirety of creation. And he does not need advice from us. He does not need critique from us. In fact, we have no place to critique him. That's what David's telling us. Be still before the Lord. Don't fret yourself over these things you see that you don't understand. Wait patiently for God. For him to act. He sees all those things. He is acting in light of all those things. And will do what is best. So you don't need to worry at all.
Prayer For Peaceful Rest
CareyAnd it is a source of fretting. Lord, give us peace as we seek to be still before you. As we seek to wait patiently for you. Lord, give us the strength to do those things. Because it's in that stillness and in that waiting and patience that we find you are completely competent. So lay us down to rest tonight, truly in a state of rest, that our hearts are at rest in you. Because we trust you.
