TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE:
John 5:24
[24] Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. (ESV)
SUMMARY
We slow down with Jesus’ words in John 5:24 and let “Truly, truly” pull our attention toward a promise strong enough to carry us into sleep. We reflect on eternal life, the end of judgment, and the cross so we can lay down tonight with gratitude and steady faith.
• Jesus’ repeated “Truly, truly” as an invitation to pay attention
• Hearing Christ’s word as receiving His teaching about who He is
• Believing the Father who sent Jesus as the doorway to eternal life
• Eternal life as lasting fellowship with God that begins now
• Passing from death to life as a real spiritual change
• No judgment because Jesus takes it on the cross
• A closing prayer of thanks and a request for faith for tomorrow

A Promise From Jesus
CareyTruly, truly I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. Those words of Jesus are the focus of today's evening mindset meditation as we prepare for rest.
Why Jesus Says Truly Twice
CareyAnd there were some of them where he emphasized them by beginning, like he does in this verse. Truly, truly, I say to you, what do you think Jesus was feeling in that moment? What was it he was trying to convey by repeating those words of the truthfulness of his statement? It feels to me as if he's wanting us to really pay attention to what he has to say, to recognize this is something that can change your life. And so what is it that he said?
Hearing And Believing For Eternal Life
CareyHe said, if you hear my word, my teaching, my instruction about myself, and about why I've come, and you believe that what I'm saying to you is true, you believe in the Father who sent me, then you will have eternal life. Isn't that an amazing transaction to ponder? Simply through believing who God is and that God sent his son to redeem us, we can have eternal life. Now that phrase eternal life is used in the New Testament to refer to everlasting fellowship with the Father. That after this life is over, the next one is guaranteed and it is glorious.
No Judgment Because Of The Cross
CareyHe continued, he says, He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. You see, something has happened in us through our belief in Jesus. We've passed from death, the state of death, and the state of heading toward death, eternal death, into a state of life. And judgment is no more. Because Jesus took our judgment on the cross. Plunder these amazing truths as you lay your head down this evening.
Gratitude Prayer And Restful Trust
CareyThis is important. That we can realize all of our judgment has been taken. Taken away by you. When you hung on that cross, God's wrath and anger at our sin was being poured out on you. Thank you so much for that. Thank you so much for giving us life in your name and through your cross. May we live in a way that reflects it. Help us to lay down tonight with faith that tomorrow we can do so.
