SPEAKER_00

Hello and welcome to the Rio Park Theater Podcast. We are former video store employee and movie enthusiast Duncan Shields.

SPEAKER_01

And former video store owner of uh Black Dog Video here in Vancouver, and also movie enthusiast Darren Gay.

SPEAKER_00

And here are the amazing movies and events coming this May to Vancouver's legendary sister theaters, the Rio Theater on Commercial and Broadway, and the Park Theater on Cambion 18th, right here in sunny Vancouver, BC. Currently sunny Vancouver BC. Yeah, I can see the sun in your eyes right now. Thank you. So if we want to get underway with the Rio Theaters, a lot of amazing stuff coming up there. First of all, we've got the art of event the art of adventure. This was in 1957. The renowned wildlife artist Robert Bateman and his uh friend biologist Bristol Foster set out on a global expedition in a rugged Land Rover they called the Grizzly Torque. They went to the UK, Congo, the India. Sorry, they went to the UK, the India. The Congo and India. The India? The very same. Yeah. Bob painted and Bristol filmed on his 16mm Bolex camera. That Land Rover was just rediscovered. That's crazy. I assume it's still maybe they found some some footage or something in the back. But as its hidden history emerges and then the new owner restores it to its former glory, the tale of their environmental activism through art and science unfolds. And like, you know, I don't know how many people you know that have a Robert Bateman painting, but I don't think I know anybody. I know a bunch. Oh, do you? They were a real uh a real uh they're a very sort of I don't know, not a boomer thing, but like the it's there's a certain if you're into nature, you would have a Bateman picture of an eagle.

SPEAKER_01

Was he one of the group of seven?

SPEAKER_00

No, no, it wasn't. My wife's uh my wife's mother has uh like a Bateman over her fireplace kind of thing. Great paintings, amazing stuff. Cool. So that should be pretty fun, and I guess kind of a kind of an ad for Land Rovers. Yeah, I think so.

SPEAKER_01

I can't I imagine like traveling in those, maybe not the UK, but you know, Congo and India in the late 50s was pretty, you know.

SPEAKER_00

You're doing some off-roading.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you're doing yeah, it's it's a lot different than traveling there now. I don't know about the Congo, but India for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the Land Rovers I think were were proper off-road vehicles back then.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that that'd be this sounds really cool. That's on Friday, May the 1st at 5 45 p.m. All right, and on the same day later on that evening at 8 o'clock, we have No FX, 40 years of fucking up. You know, I was looking at this title and was like, oh, they only have 40 years of fucking up. I've got way more years of fucking up thanks. Amateurs. Amateurs. Yeah, it uh features archival footage and candid candid interviews. This uh documentary explores how No FX became a successful independent act despite a history of self-destruction and controversy. The documentary covers the band's 40-year journey from drug idol teenage punks to influential influential rock icons. It's like a real life spinal tap. The film features intimate, in intimate, often shocking footage, including backstage chaos, drug use, and personal stories. Well, I would hope so. Yes, yes. Hell yeah. And when's that happening? Oh, so yeah, it's on the front, it's on the same Friday, Friday, the May the 1st at 8 o'clock. Right. Yeah, same Friday.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then that same Friday, what? The late night date night, uh, two for one, is Nacho Libre, which is uh rudely the 20th anniversary screening of it. I don't know how that happened. I thought that came out eight years ago myself. Time I don't like the way time moves. I'm not a big fan of it myself, actually. There's a lot of these uh 40th anniversary screenings cropping up that I'm like that's a joke, right? Yeah, I saw that when I was 20. That's uh oh no, the math checks out. Oh no, the math checks out. Uh so Jared Hess. This is Jared Hess's follow-up to his wildly popular Napoleon dynamite. This is Jack Black, early Jack Black, semi-early Jack Black.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this is yeah, this is well, 20 years ago. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Probably just after high fidelity. Yeah, yeah, I think so. That sort of put him on the map for sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But he's a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery, so he decides to become a local luchador. And uh the luchador's name is Nacho Libre, and he wants to earn money for the monastery. Not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun, sister, and car oh my god. I know. There you go. You did way better than I would have done before. Very silly. Yeah. And that's uh Friday, May the 1st at 11 15 p.m. for a little late night fun. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And who doesn't like a beautiful sexy nun?

SPEAKER_00

You know?

SPEAKER_01

Well, Paul Verhoven sure does. Oh, that's right. Um, yeah, I've it's when I was in Mexico last year and I went and saw the the uh lucha the luchadors. Oh, like the for real luchadores. Yeah, it was a blast. Oh, that must have been a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun. I'd like to check that out one time. And what do we got here? Uh the the bearded girl. Yeah, we we talked about this on the last one. Oh, that's right. We did, yeah. Yeah, it's on on the brink of inheriting the position of the bearded woman, uh, which is the matriarchal leader to an outcast community of circus performers. A young young woman defies her overbearing mother and runs away instead, seeking romance and adventure with the normies in a tiny farm town. Well, we'll see how that goes. I know. Uh, in order to fit in, she reinvents herself with stories and a fabricated past until the truth of who she is can no longer be concealed. Of course that's what's gonna happen. Of course. Uh stars uh Anwin O'Driscoll, Jessica Parray from Mad Men. Was that was she uh Don Draper's girlfriend or wife, the French Canadian?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, French Canadian Don Draper's like second or third. Kind of a Freddie Mercury mouth. Yeah, I always liked her. Yeah, she's awesome.

SPEAKER_01

Um Skylar Rad Radzion, I'm sure I'm pronouncing that right, and Harrison Brown. And that screens Saturday, May the 2nd at 3:30 in the afternoon.

SPEAKER_00

And then on that same Saturday is An Evening with Bells Larson, which is pretty interesting. It's a documentary about the making of Bells Larson's critically acclaimed album, Blurring Time, uh, which is it'll be followed by a QA by Bells and an acoustic set by Bells. But uh in 2022, Bells recorded the high voice he had lived with for years just before starting testosterone. And after his voice dropped, he returned to the same songs and harmonized with those earlier recordings. So he's singing with a past version of himself across time. That sounds pretty interesting. Yeah, so uh The Guardian loved it, Billboard NPR, the New Yorker, Toronto Star, CBC, many, many others. It was uh long listed for the 2025 Polaris Prize. And they're gonna be playing there too? Yeah, they're gonna do an acoustic set after the screening of the film. It's on Saturday, May the 2nd at 8 p.m. That's something that you'd probably want to catch. It sounds like that'd be a good time.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that sounds awesome. Um, on Sunday, the day after that, which is the May the 3rd, this coming Sunday, Outside Voices, Songs of Love and Letting Go. Uh, I guess it's played here before because uh my notes are saying it returns the Rio Theater. Well, there you go. Yeah, with an evening of uh powerful choral music exploring love from the beginning and the end. Featuring both uh Outside Voices choir, sorry, featuring both OV choirs across two performances. The concert blends live guitar and drums with fresh arrangements, arrangements and choir favorites from the Outside Voices repertoire. Audience who will hear songs by such artists as Peter Gabriel, Dion Warwick, Fleetwood Mac, Broken Bells, Radio Head, Bonnie Light, Horseman, and more. And then the night closes with a hundred and eighty super choir, so 180 voice super choir finale bringing both choirs together on stage. So there's 180 people on stage.

SPEAKER_00

180 voice choir. That's insane to me. That's gonna be a wall of sound. Very moving. There's not gonna be a dry eye in the house.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's gonna be amazing. And that's uh three o'clock on Sunday, which is almost sold out, and then it uh screens again later that day at six, which is more than half sold out.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I don't think it screens, I think it's like Oh, sorry.

SPEAKER_01

I I thought it was a it's not it's not a movie. It's no, it's oh, it's a live performance. I believe it's a live performance. Yeah, all right. I should maybe read these notes over before we start. I think so. Um, but yeah, this is gonna be amazing. So if you're into this kind of thing, get on that horse and oh yeah, and get your tickets.

SPEAKER_00

Nothing like a live choir. You know, I don't think a lot of people don't go to seek it out usually, but uh you really should. Yeah. It's very moving. And then on a very specific Monday, May the fourth, May the Fourth be with you. Uh Star Wars Episode 4. Uh Star Wars, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Just this that's called the first.

SPEAKER_00

Used just to be called Star Wars, but yeah, in my day it was called Star Wars. Star Wars Episode 4, A New Hope, 6 30 p.m., and then Rogue One, a Star Wars story at 9 p.m. Uh, the two dovetail quite well together. Did I say that right? Yeah, 6 30 p.m. Star Wars, 9 p.m. Rogue One on Monday, May the 4th.

SPEAKER_01

You know, I would think that uh they sh for me personally, I would have shown Rogue One first because that that leads right into to uh Star Wars.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like yeah, the way the story goes.

SPEAKER_00

But maybe you want to watch the f maybe for the for the littler folks. Fair enough. Maybe they'll see the 6 30 and then get the backstory for the 9 p.m. And I'm thinking most people have already seen these movies. I imagine so. Uh so that's yeah, Monday, May the 4th. $16 regular admission, or do the double bill for only $22. That's $11 a movie. That's good quality deals. Exactly.

SPEAKER_01

That's uh that's awesome. Um, let's see. Tuesday, May the 5th at 7 30. We have the Sunset Slide Sideshow. Yes. Uh okay. Vajj Abrams.

SPEAKER_00

I think I think what uh what you're looking for is Vijay J. Abrams. Vijay J. Abrams. Like Vijay J, right? It's a drag drag queen uh host. Oh, okay. Vijay, like like Vagina. Oh, okay. Vijay J. Abrams.

SPEAKER_01

I need things like spelt out for me to be able to do that.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's a fantastic, uh, fantastic stage thing.

SPEAKER_01

It is. Uh they host uh an iconic iconic lineup of Canada's drag race stars from across the country, including Vancouver's very own PM. Is that the yeah? I guess. Um Toronto's Stardoll and Dolce and Montreal icons, Johnny Jones and Sam Landry. This uh the slideshow unleashes a lineup of draw-dropping talent you won't see anywhere else, so do not miss out. Uh, see the cast perform their hit original song, Not Sorry Aboot It Live for the First Time Together.

SPEAKER_00

Not sorry about it live for the first time together. Or it's okay. You get the slideshow. It's hard to say slideshow. It's uh man, yeah. Sideshow unleashes a giant lineup. Tuesday, May 5th at 7:30. Sammy Landry. That'll be fun. That'll be a lot of fun. I'm a big fan of the name Vijay J. Abrams. Yeah. I like uh like in roller derby, all the pun names, and it's like that with all the drag queens and drag kings and got all these fantastically hilarious pun names. Excellent. Uh, then on Friday, May the 8th, skipping ahead to Friday, May the 8th, we've got Paul Chowdry, AI Artificial Indian, a hilarious UK stand-up comic with a global following. He's gonna be fantastic, as is evidenced by the fact that Friday, May the 8th at 7 p.m. is almost sold out, so they added a second show at 9 30 p.m. So uh that's gonna be a lot of fun if you like some stand-up comedy, which I am partial to.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I think uh a lot of people do like the stand-up. Yes. Uh later that evening we have um Barbed Wire. It's the 30th anniversary screening. Lies uh Canadian Pamela Anderson stars in this retro glam, weirdly prescient dystopian Odyssey set in 2017. Ooh, far-off future of 2017. Uh a load of the fights, gun battles, and other action trashy thrills as the eponymous, sexy nightclub owner Barb Wire. Barb Moonlights as a mercenary in Steel Harbor, one of the last free zones in the now fascist. Well, they were maybe a little early on that, but it's pressing it now. Yeah, uh United States. Uh that's at 11:30, uh late night, date night two for one. Did you ever um see that uh that Pam and Tommy miniseries? No, oh, that's with uh what was it? Uh Sebastian Stan and uh Tommy Lee. Yeah, like I can't remember who played um I've I've seen her in other things, but I can't remember her name. But um there's a scene in it where uh uh Pamela Anderson sneaks into a theater that's showing barbed wire, it just got released and uh she's like all excited, but then she's completely devastated that everyone's laughing at the wrong spots because it's it's it's it's not the bait the best movie in the world.

SPEAKER_00

But she thought it was like could actually be received as a proper action movie. But I think it's gonna turn into a bit of a cult item now. Well, I remember uh she talked a little bit about being seated next to I forget who made the uh that TV series. I think it might Seth Rogan might have had something to do with that.

SPEAKER_01

I think yeah, he's in it. He has his I think he has his fingers in there somewhere.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but she didn't um give permission, so she was uh she was a little angry about the the TV series. Oh, fair enough. But anyway, one thing I like about Barb Wire is that when she's asking for her price to do the hit or whatever, she's like, I want $700,000. Canadian. Oh, really? Yeah, like the Canadian currency is like the is like the the the gold standard of the future. And I was like, oh, that's fantastic.

SPEAKER_01

Because of the now dystopian fascist United States, $700 pounded. That's right. And yeah, that's uh 11 30 the on the the 8th of uh May and late night, date night, two for one.

SPEAKER_00

And then on Saturday, May the 9th is the last reckoning with Cast and Crew in attendance, a shot in Vancouver, set in Seattle, uh the ush, when Washington State still had a death penalty. A morally conflicted lawyer, writer, editor, producer Grant Gladysh, on the brink of promotion, conceals the murder confession of his panic-stricken brother Julian Minette, only to face a haunting reckoning twelve years later when the father, Drummond McDougall, of the innocent woman wrongfully executed for the crime, returns with a calculated plan for justice. Dun dun dun. That sounds like fun. That does sound like fun. And casting crew in attendance, which is always uh amazing. Cool.

SPEAKER_01

Um, I I think I just read something recently that they want to bring back the death penalty, and uh Trump wants to like use firing squads. Oh yeah, delightful.

SPEAKER_00

Isn't that delightful? What a lovely little snippet of uh of the world outside. Yeah, but let's let's maybe not talk about that. Saturday, that's on Saturday, May the 9th at 12 30 p.m., which is just after just after lunch.

SPEAKER_01

There you go. Yeah. Um, and I guess later that day we have two shows of uh Rat Red Radhika das. We can do it. I think that's right. All right, the Lightfall Tour, London based uh Cirtain artist and Bhakti Yoga Teacher. Yep. Yes, there we go. Also one of the most sought-after voices in the global conscious music movement. Saturday, May the 9th at 8 o'clock is sold out. Sold out, sold out, sold out. And then the next day, uh Sunday, May 10th at 1 o'clock in the afternoon is a second show added. So if this is your bag, get some tickets for Sunday's show.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Uh, then we have on Sunday, May the 10th, also later on that Sunday, Second Wind, a special film screening with a special guest QA. It's a special screening of the Ukrainian documentary Second Wind. It's a story of five Ukrainian heroes, four veterans with lower limb amputations, and one active duty service woman who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Jeez. Deep human story about recovery, inner transformation, dignity, and the strength to move forward despite trauma. No kidding. Man. The film follows the protagonist's journey from pain and doubt to self-acceptance and a renewed sense of self-worth. That's Sunday, May the 10th at 5 15 p.m. That's going to be a very emotional.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I can't imagine. Like, I don't even like ride my bike uphill. Right? Yeah. That was uh it's a bit much.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. But uh well done. Yeah, good on them. What an accomplishment. Yeah, for sure. And then uh we have Ann Wilson in my voice. The Ann Wilson? From Heart. From Heart. Yes. Screening and QA with Wilson and director Barb Hall. Documentary about the 75-year journey of one of Rock's most powerful and enduring voices. Exclusive merch will be there too. So how 75 is like she started when she was a baby? It's just with this rock, this rock journey.

SPEAKER_00

I think the uh the documentary, yeah, she's uh 108. Oh wow. No, no, the documentary, I think uh charts her her whole life. So that's why that's a 75-year journey.

SPEAKER_01

Um Tuesday, May the 12th, but bad news for everyone that hasn't got a ticket, it is sold out.

SPEAKER_00

There might be some standby if you want to go check it out.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, when it comes good when it gets closer to the date, check the Rio. Uh, sometimes they release tickets. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's gonna be uh a once-in-a-lifetime thing. Yeah, for sure. And then on Wednesday, May the 13th at 6 p.m., we've got Smashed Potato Kids, the Vancouver Sketchfest. So it's the third annual Vancouver Sketch Comedy Film Festival and after party with over $10,000 in prizes to be won. It's gonna be off the hook. It's gonna be very funny. Hey, do you like to laugh? I do. Then come to the Vancouver Sketchfest Film Festival on Wednesday, the May the 13th at 6 p.m. I do like the name Smash Potato Kids. That's a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I could say that all day long. Um, Blue Heron with a director in uh for in attendance for QA. In the late 1990s, eight-year-old Sasha and her family relocate to a new home on Vancouver Island, but their fresh start is interrupted by increasingly dangerous behavior from the eldest son, Jeremy. At wits end, their parents are presented with a shattering choice. Award-winning director Sophie Romberi's feature debut is a lyrical and profound testament to the things we carry with us. That sounds pretty good. And Vancouver Island, very scenic. Yeah, that's beautiful, of course. And that's Thursday, the May 14th at 6 30 in the evening.

SPEAKER_00

Then on Thursday, May the Oh dear, I typed that wrong. Yes, you did. On Thursday, May the 1th. I'm gonna guess. Oh deal, I don't know what date that was. It's probably the 14th. Uh yeah, it's gotta be the 14th. Oh, yeah, because then the next one's the 15th at 8:30.

SPEAKER_01

There we go. Whew, figured that out.

SPEAKER_00

So Thursday, May 1th. Thursday, May the 14th. It's the Shinjuku Boys, which looks really good. This is a documentary. You know, and if you're gonna find something wild that blows your mind, it's always gonna be in a documentary. There, there are there are narrative movies out there that will definitely change your life. Well, they always say truth is stranger than fiction. And it is a true thing. I don't know, I forget whoever said that first. I just did. Oh, I'd say you know that wasn't it. That was you. So this remarkable documentary offers rich insight into gender and sexuality in Japan via a candid portrait of Kazuki Tatsu and Geish, three trans mask hosts working at the new Maryland Club in Tokyo's bustling Shinjuku district. As the film follows them at home and on the job, all three talk frankly about their lives, revealing their views on love, sex, and identity. Alternating with these illuminating interviews are fabulous sequences shot inside the club, a place patronized largely by heterosexual women. Oh. I imagine there's a lot of staggettes. Yeah, I'm sure. Yeah, a lot of parties and uh stuff like that. So that sounds like that would be a pretty a little a a little window into a slice of life. I've I've no idea about. Yeah, same here. Thursday, May the 14th at 9 15 p.m.

SPEAKER_01

There we go. And then the following day on Friday, the May May 3rd May the 15th. Wow, we can do it. We can do it. We can do it. 8 30 p.m. is uh John Wu's classic A Better Tomorrow, which is the 40th anniversary restoration. No. Um the story is a tale of two brothers, one a successful counterfeiter, and the younger a fledgling graduate in the Hong Kong Police Academy. Wait a second, those two don't go together. No, they do not. Uh the plot revolves around the split when the younger brother learns the other is a criminal and the efforts of the criminal brother to reform.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_01

Along the way, there are plenty of heist double crosses and shootouts, and I'm gonna guess maybe some doves. Perhaps some doves. Yes. Uh with Lung Tai, Leslie Chung, Chow Yun Fat, of course, and Emily Chu. Uh Friday, May 15th at 8 30 p.m.

SPEAKER_00

A friend of mine tried to do a short film in the in the vein of John Woo and uh went to the library where there are uh the the sorry, the graveyard where there were tons of pigeons. Library graveyard and filmed his uh um protagonists walking towards the camera amongst the pigeons so that they would scatter in front of the camera, and none of them moved. None of them cared. They were too used to humans. Yeah, they just got out of his way and stayed on the ground, and he was like, oh no. Yeah, you've got to have people off screen throwing them onto the screen. Uh then that night, Friday, May the 15th at 11 p.m. late night, date night two for one is Zombieland. Uh the hilarious zombie comedy from 2009, starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, and maybe someone else. I was gonna say there's a lot of things. If you haven't seen it, if you haven't seen it, though that's gonna be a lot of fun if you like it. Yeah, that's what that movie's a lot.

SPEAKER_01

It's a it's a good time. Good, clean fun, that one. Yeah. Um, then we have the music of Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd, cover band Zapotostrophe and the and Lunatics on the Grass. Sorry, Zapotostrophe obviously is the Frank Zappa.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's just Zapostrophe. Zapostrophe? What did I say? Zapotostrophe. Zap apostrophe.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Uh let's go with what Duncan said there.

SPEAKER_00

Hip apostrophe.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah, zapostrophe.

SPEAKER_01

And lunatics on the grass, uh, recreate the music of these legends. I've seen both these acts uh before. Oh, good, right on. So this will be a lot of. So you're familiar with it. No, I've seen Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd. I haven't I haven't seen the cover bands. You've okay. I was like, I thought you'd seen the cover bands. You've literally seen Frank Zappa and Floyd. Yeah. But uh yeah, this uh this would be a lot of fun if you're into that kind of music, and I know a lot of people are. Yes. Saturday, May 16th at nine o'clock in the evening.

SPEAKER_00

Then uh on Sunday, May the 17th at 9 30 p.m., a little film called Fight Club. And that's all we're gonna say. And that's uh that's all yeah, and we're not gonna talk about it. No, we're not. Although I will say it it claims to be the twenty fifth anniversary, which uh is just rude. This is

SPEAKER_01

Like the most depressing uh podcast episode we've done so far. Too many anniversaries. Yeah. Uh the Rio Theater Burlesque and Variety Show, the May edition on Saturday, May the 23rd at 9 p.m. for all you people.

SPEAKER_00

I went to the April edition last night and it was absolutely astounding. Oh, cool. That's good to hear. Monday, May the 25th, uh at 6:30 p.m. with the 5 30 p.m. pre-show is something I'm very interested about. Uh, it's called Beneath Crimson Sails. The cast and crew will be there. Pirate Costume Party is there, and there'll be a costume contest. Oh, cool. It's a filmed in Vancouver series about pirate drama, swashbushling adventure, kind of a soap opera pirate adventure thing, but it was filmed in 169 for your phone. So it's filmed in a long, thin rectangle. Uh-huh. So it'll be interesting to see this. Easy. Easy. It'll be very interesting to see this in the theater. I'm curious. I don't know if this is the future of uh cinema. I certainly hope not. But we'll see how we'll see how I'm interesting to see how I'd be interested to see how they would because whenever you see a movie, a movie highlight or a movie reel or something like that, like posted on Instagram or TikTok, like you know, two-thirds of the screen is cut off, and you'll just see a couple of hands meeting for a handshake and you're supposed to see their faces. Yeah. So to see it see it actually shot in see an actual series shot in 169.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I guess you'd have to like reconfigure the whole setup on like set and everything. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's bizarre to me. You'd have a whole new, a whole new cinematographic eye. Nice. And so there's a post a pirate costume party and contest.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so there's a pirate costume party and contrast at five at 5 30, uh, and then at 6 30 p.m. is the actual screen. And it's all local people that did it, so it's gonna be a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_01

A lot of fun. You know, I'm thinking of having uh the lower part of my leg removed. Oh, there you go. Yeah, and uh replaced with a peg. Nice.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I get a live parrot. I'm gonna steal my friend's live parrot. There we go. Uh smash and grab at Mr. Pets on the way up. Exactly. That's uh Monday, May the 25th.

SPEAKER_01

All right. Uh American Troll. Come for the dock, stay in your seats for a live, which is sure to be controversial. Comedy show from four funny fellas. We have Brett Forte, Sergey Putinski, Uncle Hack, and Uncle Laser. One night only. Okay. American Troll is a bold new film from Polish Canadian director Saturnin. I suppose. Yeah. This uh gripping documentary dives into one of the most controversial freedom of speech cases in Canadian history. When comedian Mike Ward made a joke about Jeremy Gabriel, who is a young singer with a disability, it ignited a decade-long legal battle that climbed all the way to the Supreme Court.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, wow.

SPEAKER_01

Provocative, unflinching, and darkly humorous. American Troll explores the cost of standing your ground. In the face of relentless adversity, it reveals how conviction can lead not only to personal growth, but also to public backlash, online cruelty, personal struggles, structure struggles, personal struggles, and very expensive lawyer bills. Tuesday, May 26th at 7 o'clock in the evening.

SPEAKER_00

That's gonna be a lot of fun. And that's uh so far what's on the schedule. Yeah, that's what's coming to the Rio Theater in May. There's gonna be tons more stuff, so just uh check out their website all the time.

SPEAKER_01

Check out their website, that's uh Rio Theater.ca. Yeah. You can sign up for their online emails and uh notices and stuff too, and you get those whenever there's something announced.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, which I I get a lot of. Yeah, me too. Very good. And there's all sorts of posters around town too and stuff like that. Yeah, there's no excuse. There's no excuse. Uh so that brings us to the park theater. Oh yeah. And this right now, I I will admit the schedule so far for the park theater is a little sparse, but uh I know Rachel Fox definitely populates that schedule uh really quickly, usually around the uh near the end of the month. Yeah, but what is on there so far this is amazing, is incredible. Uh on May the 1st at 6 45 p.m. is the 4K restoration of the Wicker Man, which is great. I first saw this in the UK when it was finally unbanned. Did you see it in other small Scottish island? No, but I did see it in a in a small Scottish theater. Oh, awesome. But it was when it had finally been unbanned. It was banned. It was banned from 1975 to like 2002. For for what? For I don't know, whatever. Whatever freaked people out in the 60s. It's a pretty freaky movie, but yeah, or sorry, 70s. Yeah. So May the first is upon us. Spring has sprung, no better way to mark May Day than with a juicy classic work of folk horror on the big screen. Join us for the screening of Robin Hardy's endlessly unsettling 1973 classic, The Wicker Man, a truly iconic work of British folkloric cinema that was beautifully reborn in Glorious 4K as part of its as part of its 50th anniversary. I was I was hoping this wouldn't have the how how old it is in it. Makes sense, considering I was two years old in 1973. There you go. Sergeant Howie, a righteous, puritanical, staunchly Christian police officer, investigates the disappearance of a young girl on a secluded Scottish island. While there, he's surprised to discover that the inhabitants suspiciously deny the missing girl's very existence, and even more shocking, at least to the traditionally pious law officer, is that the island seems to be ruled by a libertarian society organized around pagan rituals. Stars Christopher Lee at his sinister best. Yeah. It's got the saucy brick eckkland. Yeah, she's great in this. It's a really fun movie. I think I remember reading this as one of Christopher Lee's favorite roles that he's ever done. Don't doubt it. Yeah. He's like, when he talks to, the guy's like, Well, you on the mainland had your chance of society, and you how would you say these days blew it? So good. Awesome. May the 1st at 6 45 p.m. on the park theater on the big screen with their projector for K restoration.

SPEAKER_01

That's gonna be awesome. Um, if you've only seen the remake uh with uh Nicolas Cage, uh, which is actually filmed on one of the islands here somewhere. Yeah, um, which is not, I wouldn't say it's a good movie. Uh I would say it's a pretty terrible movie, but it's a very entertaining movie in its terribleness. If you've only seen that, see the original because it is one of my it's one of my personal favorite movies of all time. It's an incredible film. It's so it's so good. Uh on excuse me, May the 2nd. We have the May May the 2nd Film Fest.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I'm calling it a film fest because it's an amazing lineup.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, it is. Okay, yes, it is an amazing lineup. Uh, 1:30 in the afternoon. I guess it's a Saturday, I'm gonna have to assume. Yes, it is the Saturday coming up. Uh, featuring uh sorry, Sinners. The movie Sinners. I'm sure everyone has heard of Sinners. Sinners, kind of a big deal last year. Yep, won a bunch of awards, great movie. Um they're showing that, and they're also featuring a QA with the director of photography, Autumn Durald Arcapah. Fantastic. Yes, yes. She's uh like the movie's so beautiful.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that would be great to see uh I was sorry to ever uh I didn't get to see it in IMAX because I know Ryan Kugler, he's a huge fine film nerd, and he talks about the you know the differing ratios that they did for the different sequences and stuff like that. And if you see it on a huge screen like the Rio, it's still gonna blow your absolute doors off.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and so it's it's very much worth seeing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, expect to have no doors when you leave this. No doors.

SPEAKER_00

You're gonna leave Doorless. Yes.

SPEAKER_01

And then later on that day, a double bill of two of the best uh movies from the late 70s and the 80s, we have Alien, really Scott's Alien, followed by Jam Jam, James Cameron's uh take on the Alien uh franchise of the Aliens, which is the 40th anniversary screening. Okay, yeah, okay. I'll accept it. I get it. And again, if you've never seen these on the big screen, please do yourself a favor and go check these out. Um they're amazing.

SPEAKER_00

Alien at 6 30 and Aliens at 9 p.m. I can't wait. I want to take uh my daughter. She's never seen either of them. Yeah, it's gonna be a bit of a hard sell, but I'm gonna try to try to get it. Maybe she can bring a few friends.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, yeah, for sure. Well, you know, Alien's pretty scary. It's a it's a great horror, it's basically a haunted house movie in outer space. Yeah, which I I think she can take it. Yeah, she's the thing. And Aliens is scary, but it's only it's scarier when you've seen Alien because you know what the aliens are.

SPEAKER_00

You know what they're up against, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And it's but it's but it's got more, it's sort of more of an action kind of movie.

SPEAKER_00

Oh my god, those movies are so good. Yeah, and then on May the 17th, there's a double bill, hosted by Osgood Perkins, actually, which is pretty cool. Oh, that was totally cool. Uh it's gonna be McCabe and Mrs. Miller and uh Carnal Knowledge. Nice. They were both shot in Vancouver at the same time. McCabe and Mrs. Miller is Warren Beattie and uh human chameleon Julie Christie, along with Renee Aubergenois, Shelly Duvall, Keith Carradine, and this Robert Altman picture about a prostitute and a gambler becoming business partners in the old west. Yeah, it's it's pretty great. So is is she is she known as a human chameleon because she eats uh bugs with her tongue shooting out? No, no, her uh she I've just seen her in a few different roles. Right, yeah, and been like, oh, that's Julie Christie too. Yeah, she's amazing. I saw her in Shampoo and I saw her in in uh in this again with Warren Beatty. Yeah, a few other things. And Carnal Knowledge is Jack Nicholson, Candice Bergen, and Margaret, and a rare acting outing by Art Garfunkel in this Mike Nichols directed picture about college dating and well adult dating, you know, heartbreak, relationship, marriages, just the changing feelings of love through the decades as we follow our main characters through marriages and divorces and ups and downs. It's a very good film. Yeah, it's a very good film, and really good roles from everybody involved. And I don't know, Art Garfunkel acquits himself honorably. I don't know why. I guess maybe he didn't feel like you know, yeah going along with that. Yeah. Both shot in Vancouver at the same time. So they'll be fun to contrast and compare, compare the two. Yeah. Because McCabe and Mrs. Miller was uh yeah, off in the wilderness in the winter.

SPEAKER_01

I think it was filmed like on like uh one of the mountains here, mostly because it's a it's set set in the mountains. I think it's filmed on uh Seymour. I don't know which one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

But yeah, it's it's it's pretty amazing.

SPEAKER_00

It's and it's a beautiful movie to see on the big screen, too. And uh well, that's all that's on the schedule on the park presently. Yeah, but um there will be lots more. So if you go to theparktheater.ca, um check it out. There's a lot of amazing stuff coming there. The programmer Rachel Fox does an amazing job. And uh there's lots of movies and events to come, so stay tuned. Yeah. To the yeah, real theater.ca, parktheater, theparktheater.ca. There is a parktheater.com, right, which is in like Tucson or something. Okay, yeah, don't don't go there. So go to theparktheater.ca. See all the amazing stuff coming to both places as the month progresses. And uh that's all from us for this month. Excellent. So meet us at the Rio. Yes, yes. And the park. And the park. And the park. All right, all right.
