This week is part summer catch-up, part favorite things, and part reminder that maybe... not everything is about us.

We chat about summer weather, self-tanner recommendations, linen pants, jean shorts, Nuuly clothing rentals, and finding confidence in your style as you get older. We also share what we're loving lately, including Nourish Move Love workouts, strength training, and an inspiring audiobook about choosing joy, resilience, and seeing the good in others.

The conversation then shifts into a deeper discussion about "main character energy," the Invisible Guest Theory, and how often we assume other people's actions, moods, or responses are somehow about us. We talk about anxiety, overthinking, being easily offended, and the freedom that comes from realizing most people are simply living their own stories.

Through personal stories, practical examples, and biblical perspective, we explore what it looks like to focus less on people's opinions and more on God's purpose, reminding themselves that the goal isn't to be famous in our own story, but faithful in God's story.

Bible verse referenced:

Galatians 1:10
"Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God?"

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to 27 Good. I'm Amy.

SPEAKER_00

I'm Patty.

SPEAKER_01

Your host for tonight's event. We can take that part off. Our things. Instead of saying what's up. How are we? How are things going? What's up? We should have asked ChatGBT for a bunch of different intros. Gosh, what's up? You look so tan.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah. Thank you. I gotta tell you about this lotion I got.

SPEAKER_01

You can't see us, but we look so cute.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm a redhead and I'm fair skinned, but I love a good tan. And actually, I would say probably all of my teen years, probably most of my 20s, a lot of my 20s, I really was still after a tan from the sun. And then now I am 42 and I know that ain't happening for me. I'm still after a tan. You're still after it from the sun?

SPEAKER_01

I've never used a self-tanner. I don't know if it's a pride thing of like, I'll just get it from the sun. I think I'm actually terrified to turn orange, is the real reason. Oh, okay. Do I look orange? No, you never do. And you've used one for a long time. I remember you showing me the mitt, and I was like, looks great. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like I'm scared you'd do it. So my biggest complaint from a self-tanner is the smell. It has the smell of I don't know, like baked bread or something. It's terrible. But this one is not bad because it's a gradual. So you're just supposed to use it every day and then it slowly builds on on. And so it's not, I think, as strong smelling in that sense. So it is a Luna bronze glow tanning moisturizer. And because it's gradual, also it's really easy to apply because if you got it, sometimes you know, if you get it in a weird spot, it's like too orange or something, but it seems like it's such a light amount that it hardly shows. But yeah, somebody just the other day told me they were like, You're a teacher of one week on a summer break and you have such a two hand. I'm like, listen, girls. I do go for a walk every day. So I do get plenty of sun, but I wear a hat and I wear sunscreen. So it is not from the sun. I'm a little bit afraid of skin cancer, I think. I mean, I've been going now for a couple years for my full body scans. And I just think knowing what I did to my skin as a fair skin girl, trying to get a tan. I went to tanning beds in high school. Yeah. Yeah, but at least you still could get a good tan. Yeah, I'm just a little bit. I would go to tanning beds and like my full body would have like these reactions. I was like just trying to make it happen. Like problems coming up. So oh gosh. I've just fully embraced. I am a, yeah. So we'll link my tanner if you're looking for a good lotion. And it's got a little bit, when I was out in uh running urines today, it had like a tiny bit of a shimmer to it, too, which I think probably makes it even look more glowy.

SPEAKER_01

Love a shimmer. I used to have something. Maybe it was that mineral veil. Gosh, what was that mineral?

SPEAKER_00

It's coming back around too. A shimmer is really yes.

SPEAKER_01

That's what I used to put. It was is called bare minerals, and they had a place in the mall, and you would go get your makeup done. I should do it again. And it was the mineral veil at the end. Yeah, loved it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, I will say too, I was thinking of the podcast today when I was running errands because it's just so hot outside and so gorgeous. And I was thinking of how many podcast episodes we had at the beginning of this year, 2026, where we talked about how cold, how dark the sun is here, everyone's spirits are lifted.

SPEAKER_01

Someone said that at work of like it's gonna be fun to just see everyone perk up a little bit, everyone be a little happier. Yeah, we're all gonna just changes it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it really is just gorgeous. That's probably the if you live in an Ohio, that's the thing you appreciate, is you get four seasons for sure. But if you have a hard time in those dark winter days, it's just a season. We apologize that on those podcast episodes. We were just complaining about the city.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my gosh, I know only sunny days for now. No complaint about the rain. Yeah. Or the heat. I am on a mission to find a great summer short. There's one in my target cart that I need to order because I gotta find that. Yeah, so I still love all my linen shorts. Oh, yeah. I'm wearing those and linen pants. I don't have any linen pants. They're just so great.

SPEAKER_00

It's such an easy way to look kind of dressed up, but so comfortable. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

You know, you are always fashionable. I'm always late to a trend, I feel.

SPEAKER_00

Well, I've rent my clothes now, remember? So they're so cute. I can grab something trendy and only wear it for that month, and it's not like you know.

SPEAKER_01

I think I'm with linen pants and barrel jeans, which are growing on me, I kind of want to buy a pair. I just always think, like, why would I be trying to look bigger? But they're not, they're just like flowy. You know what I mean? It's not really. I think if it's the right size, then it's fine.

SPEAKER_00

I think that's like your millennial skinny jean girl.

SPEAKER_01

It is a millennial skinny jean girl. We just want them tight, we just like stuff tight. Also, Jason's such a hater on all the mom jeans. Yeah, Brian.

SPEAKER_00

Like the so it just like every time I wear mine, Brian always goes, Why are you wearing my jeans again?

SPEAKER_01

Jason's like, I don't get why you would want to look bad.

SPEAKER_00

Like, why do you want to look bad? Why are you wearing my jeans? Gosh, I kept a pair, it's a denim linen pair of jeans. I kept them for my newly, and I don't think I've really kept anything yet. And I just loved them. They were expensive, but I loved them.

SPEAKER_01

Why would you have worn them and then I would have seen them?

SPEAKER_00

Charlie's eighth grade promotion, the picture. Oh yeah, the light blue. Yeah. So pretty. And they're so thin and just like summer pants so many times that I was like, I'm just keeping these. So they're free people brand. Like, can I even afford anything like that? No, but I did once in a while. Well, yeah, and it was a discount because when you with Newly, if you keep what you rented, you get a discount. So it's cheaper than just buying them from them. But I'm doing the same with the jean shorts. I've been ordering jean shorts from Newly. So also another option with Newly is Can you tell people what Newly is in case they weren't here? Yes. Maybe they know. It's clothing rental. It's N-U-U-L-Y. My cousins who live in New York City got me hooked on it because they're like so trendy living in New York City. And it's such a great way to try new trends, or I have we have a wedding coming up on Saturday, and I have a dress coming for the wedding. So if you're a person like me who likes a new outfit for an event, it's an easy way to get something. And then a lot of times when you get a dress for a wedding, like you're never wearing it again. It's sitting in your closet. No, it's just so fun to bring clothes. So you get six items, you get a monthly um, just a monthly fee that you pay. And then if you wanted to keep something, you could. But then another option that they have is they have a thrift store. So after everybody's worn them, passed them around. Usually it's in the off season you can buy something from the thrift store. And so my goal this summer is to try different shorts. Jean shorts, and then remember which ones I liked and then watch for them in the thrift store. Yes. And that's where you get them like 80% off, like super discounted. So we're probably I too am on the hunt for the perfect jean short. I think I'm in like a weird, I don't like them real short anymore. But then there's that trend where they're real long.

SPEAKER_01

And that you and then Bermuda. I can't do it. Why can't I not say that one? Bermuda. God no.

SPEAKER_00

Or even just the ones that are like to your knees. It reminds me of Avril Levine, like Skater Boy, and I just can't. I did just listen to her the other day. I mean, she's adorable, but I don't want to wear them.

SPEAKER_01

No, no. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So fun. So the other thing that I've been loving right now is those workouts. You've been talking about them nourished. My coworker said. Love.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, let's just talk about this girl. So Patty and I did Beach Body for years. And actually, the memory that I thought of was do you remember when I used to come over here? Yeah. Not for forever, but a few times at least. Uh-huh. And we would do what, like a 5 a.m. workout. Yeah. Beachbody, autumn calibre. What was her last name? Calibre something.

SPEAKER_00

So intense. My first Beach Body workout I ever did was P90X, the original P90X. And it was DVDs only. Do we even have streaming? I think we have those CDs. It was before I had kids. So it was like circa 2009, 2008, something like that. And sometimes when I see workouts of it, it like brings me this flashback of just like my I could like can smell the basement.

SPEAKER_01

I know you mean the nostalgia of just I did those workouts so many times.

SPEAKER_00

They were so hard. So hard. You're like panting through them. You're sweating so much. And then I don't remember when Beach Body turned into this cult movement. I feel like it really did. It became there were like the coaches and the coaches, you know, 21-day fix, the stuff. And everybody, and everybody who followed in groups. Remember when we had to post our workout the accountability pictures every day and stuff? Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Well, okay, so Nourish Move Love. It's a girl named Lindsay and her friend Rachel and some other couple, a few other people that she does workouts with. Her husband has been in one. I did the one that they did together, and it was cute. He's a professional volleyball player, sand volleyball, I think. Wild. But she's just a mom. And I feel like which happens to be a good one. I can see that, but she's a fit mom. Yes, she's for sure a fit mom. She's an athlete.

SPEAKER_00

She also said she was in any ingram three the other day in one of the workouts. And I was like, yes, I thought that she was. Anyways.

SPEAKER_01

But it's like functional. And I feel like when she relates stuff back, it's like when you're picking up toys and when you're it just is motivating. Longevity. We talked a lot about longevity. Like the goal is keeping the body you have going. Yeah. And she has a couple mobility stretches that you can do. And anyways, obviously I'm all high on her and think she's great. So it's I'm happy. Always when you make a recommendation, you're like, I hope someone else likes this as much as I do.

SPEAKER_00

Well, yeah, and I was overwhelmed for it to be on YouTube. And so when I went to her channel last Monday, she was starting a new workout series, and I just thought, well, I'll just do this one day one. Turns out it's a hard one, right? You said I think it's the hardest one I've ever done. How many push-ups did you say we did 100? I think no, I think like 60 though. Yeah. Oh my gosh. 20 100. Yeah, right. I did not do them all. It's so hard. I'm gonna well shake you after that. And I'm a walk on my road girl. And when it comes to strength training, I just probably in the last two years, I would say, have really been slacking on that. And I know that in my 40s, that's the thing I need to be doing is strength training and it's like bone density and all the things. Um, so that's a little bit why it was like my summer goal was to do it and try and get back into some kind of routine. And I will say now that I did it, I don't know why I can't. I mean, they're 20 minute videos, they end up being about 25, but the workout itself is 20 minutes. But I could easily do that like quick after school or right after dinner or something like that. Even I was thinking during basketball season, which is easy to say when you're not in a busy season to be like, I could get this done. But I really appreciated them. I think. And then my coworker Julie, she told us that she does the workouts and Julie's had a knee surgery, and she said this girl had the same, so she maybe helped her through some of that or did a workout that was better for note and knee mobility or something.

SPEAKER_01

But I feel like my entire fee is just talking about this. Sounds so extreme, but if you don't strength train, you're not gonna be able to get off the toilet when you're 90 and it's stressing me out.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, well, I will say from watching my dad and his surgeries that the way your muscles can atrophy so fast, and as you get older, it's quicker and quicker. I was so sore last week. Just fine. Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I remember the first one I did of hers. It was the same thing you said of like, how am I gonna sit to pee? Because it hurts.

SPEAKER_00

It was like the middle of the night. It like shocks you. You're like, you get up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you're like, oh no, I can't sit on the toilet. I have to like just kind of like fall down. You just fall down, just give it. Yeah. It was sneaky muscle groups too that I feel like would be like, oh, that hurts. When did we work that in the workout? That's how I feel, yeah. Your back is it your body?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's what I was just about to say.

SPEAKER_00

Those muscles. The one workout, her back the really really hit the back.

SPEAKER_01

Uh another thing I'm loving is I'm almost done with this audiobook. I don't think I've talked about it called Don't Call It a Comeback. It's her name's Kira DeMito, and she is a professional runner, but she ran and then took like 10 years off to be a mom. And then went back and like ran all these races I don't know anything about, but one's an American record. And she talks a lot. She she's not a Christian, but it's still such a good read. And one of the things she said that has stuck with me, she is very much like, I'm happy, I'm having fun, everything is about fun, and I'm going to like just choose to be happy and see the good in the world. And the one thing she said was, you really just have to choose to see the good intent in people. And I feel like we all have people we struggle with, and it's just I wonder if she got the title of that book from L L Cool J.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know that. Yes, you do. You don't? I guess he is like a 90s rapper. You were probably a child. I don't know. This is gonna totally take the podcast. Don't call it a comeback. Maybe he says it at the beginning of the song. He's like, Don't call it a comeback, but it's from the song. It's from the song that's Mama said knock you out. I'm gonna knock you out. Do you know that song? No. So the reason why I would right away know this is because I came into the family room the other day singing that song to Sam. So he was gonna knock him out. And he was like, Why do you always just make up songs? Right. And I was like, No, that's a real song. Oh, cool, Jay. So I played it, and at the beginning of it, he's like, Don't call it a comeback. That's so funny.

SPEAKER_01

So she stole it. It's trademarked if she's still a book. So already, she's terrible. No, it's just been such a fun, and I'm listening to it. And she, I think anytime the author narrates the book, it's just fun and great. But it's so good because it is damn. Just remember, people are no one's trying to mess up. No one's trying to do something. Actually, this is a perfect segue to one of the things we want to talk about. No one is trying to intentionally make your life difficult. I don't think. Hardly anyone. And the theme of this next thing we want to talk about is that we're gonna be able to do it.

SPEAKER_00

It's not about you. You're not always this is something that, okay, so to preface a tiny bit, my two boys, Charlie is 14, Sam is 12. Charlie is my external processor, he is my extrovert, he is. I used to joke when he was little that the best way to punish him was to not let him be with people. It was like he wants to be like Ariel. I want to be where the people are. And Sam is very much the opposite. Yeah. If even when he was little, if there was a group of kids playing, he'd be like, Where's Sam? And like, oh, he's in that other room doing trains by himself.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, so Sam recently, as a burn, like a way to insult his brother, he was like, You're not always the main character. Because Charlie is. He's big and he's he is the main character. Yeah. And I loved it. And I feel like it stuck with me of because I think I have a little bit of bad personality. Charlie gets that for me. He gets all my good for me, but some of the bad.

SPEAKER_01

I think most people kind of not most people. We all think at least even if we're not doing it externally, like Charlie's version, we just do. We make everything about ourselves. Also in the tense that in the like an example of like, I don't know, someone does something.

SPEAKER_00

What would be an example of this? Maybe you see somebody somewhere and they're in kind of a grumpy mood and they're short with you, and you think they're mad at me. Right. Yes. This is I should I think they're mad at me. I think I did something to bother them. And you're and you're going in like past like the last time I saw them, they were nice, but then this time they were mad. So in that amount of time, what have I done to make them mad? But really, maybe they were just having a bad day. Yeah, or just had nothing to do with you at all.

SPEAKER_01

Right, which I think is 99%.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I think so.

SPEAKER_01

Because you would think that if it did have something to do with you, you would know. Plus, I think also this then is like a highway for us to be offended by stuff of like, oh, they didn't text me back or something, whatever the thing. And it's like, it's actually not about you. Right. Maybe they're busy. You're not the main character. Yeah, you're not the main character. And every story at least, you're not and plus you're then just worrying about this stuff for absolutely no reason. Because it's not about you. And dwelling on it. I actually remember there was an incident at work a long time ago, and I felt like it was all my fault. And I went to, which of course a two I always do. I feel like somehow I could have done better. My boss, and he was like, Amy, if the company hinged on you feeling that way, we would be in a bad. And like he was just like, It's not about you, basically. And like a nice way. But it just was like, gosh, we really can spiral and act like the company created this whole policy just about me. You know what I mean? Mm-hmm. I don't know. Silly, silly example. So the invisible guest theory is something that I saw on Instagram, gosh, a long time ago. And it's that the example I saw was when you walk into someone's house. You just assume everyone's looking at you, everyone's listening to everything you had to say. Like when you're chatting with people, they're watching what you're eating or you're drinking, but really everyone's thinking about themselves. No one's even noticing what you're wearing. No one notices that you like tripped or stumbled over your words. Uh you're an invisible guest.

SPEAKER_00

Everyone else is doing the same thing.

SPEAKER_01

They're just focused on themselves. And we naturally are. I'm not acting like it's a terrible thing. I think it's naturally how we're wired, but I do think it's probably an unhealthy state of mind. And one that I don't know. Right? Like, I just think anytime that I've made it about myself, it's actually like, you're crazy. Stop doing this. Yeah. Truly, because you just can spiral and write out this entire scenario in your head that is one, not rooted in any type of truth other than your feelings about something.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And when you when you do that, when you walk in the room and you think everyone's looking at you, everyone's worried, you're nervous, you're anxious, you're maybe careful of what you're saying. You're not really your true self then, because you're really kind of only thinking what is everybody thinking of. Right.

SPEAKER_01

And ultimately, one thing that we've talked about is um gosh, I think our primary calling as Christians is just to do everything for the glory of God. And when we're so focused on all of our little movements or actions, we're not looking for those opportunities at all. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

To like serve people or love people. Our worth, our worth isn't found in the opinion of others. It's God, which God's already there. God's already there, loves us fully for who we are. Yeah. I think we have to remember that the goal of our life isn't to be famous in our own story, it's to be faithful in God's story. And so sometimes I think we do. We want to be main character energy or something and just but remembering that we're walking in God's presence more so than worrying about what everybody thinks about us, I think. I had done a tiny bit of research on that because you had mentioned that you want to talk about that invisible guest theory. And so there's a practical challenge. So the next time you enter a meeting, a church gathering, school event, or social function, here's things you can do. You can take a deep breath. Remind yourself that most people are thinking about themselves, and then ask God to help you notice others instead of worrying about yourself and look for one person you can encourage or serve. Shifting our focus outward often quiets the anxiety inward. So it's one way to be like, okay, instead of worrying about what everybody thinks about me, what can I do to maybe better this room or better, even just one person in this room? And I don't do it a lot because I'm a pretty confident person in that social gathering, but I do think when you take the time to be like, okay, God, use me here for good, right? And help me in the way you want me to, make my words make sense. I mean, I feel like that's the one that I pray for the most is make me say what you want me to say. Help me, help me to say the right things.

SPEAKER_01

I think the other thing when you do do that, because I feel like I've had instances of that. Of course I've had a million times more instances of thinking only about myself, but you actually just leave feeling better when you give instead. You know what I mean? It's like give versus take. You really are more blessed to give. But it's like, gosh, just listening to someone else instead of being the one that has to talk about your day, you know, at something or getting to learn some, I don't know, learn something about somehow. And gosh, so speaking of that challenge, I went to Halty today after work and without kids. And so I always feel a bit more aware of what I could do to help someone here. Really so touched by everything you shared about your dad. And just, gosh, we should just always be on the lookout for how we can help, especially someone who might be in a scooter who can't reach. There was a lady recently that she was, and I don't remember if I had kids or not. Not saying that's a thing, but you just start, you know what I mean? Yeah. I feel more available mentally to be like, oh, do you need help? So that lady was like, Yeah, can you grab that down? But then I think also you have to be ready to kind of take the rejection too. And it she wasn't a reject, but today I was like, Oh, can I grab something for you to this other person?

SPEAKER_00

And she was like, No, I'm just looking. You know what I mean? I would say, because I offer to help people a lot, and it's probably like I don't know what maybe like 60-40, like 60% of the time, they're like, No, I got this, or and then the other part, which is not like most of the time you're helping, but a lot of the times people say no, thank you.

SPEAKER_01

Sure, which is yeah, I think great. Yeah, and you feel, but it is again, it's that wasn't about me. She just didn't need help, actually. She could get whatever she needed. And so it is like we just have to.

SPEAKER_00

I took my dad to a doctor's appointment last week, and there's a parking garage, and there's this really big, there's this long walkway from the parking garage, and there's this large man. He was easily over six feet on crutches. I couldn't tell if something was broken or what was going on, but he was shuffling along instead of using his crutches. He was obviously couldn't really use them well and was like shuffling along. And he was with another man, which I feel like that's an important part of the story. Because if you were with a woman, the woman would be like, I'm gonna help in some way. Two men. I was like, it's probably his brother. His brother's like, Come on, man, you coming? And he's obviously can't make it across this walkway. So I said, Oh my gosh, do you need a wheelchair? And he was like, Well, when we get in the hospital, yeah, I'm gonna try to get one. Well, I buzzed ahead and went downstairs and got a wheelchair and went back up. Well, what's funny is a I think a doctor, nurse of somebody, somebody that definitely worked at the hospital, had seen the same thing. And she has obviously more ways to get to people in the hospital. She was calling for help when I I come back up then in the elevator with the wheelchair and she's calling for help. And she acted annoyed by me. She was like, I called somebody to bring that wheelchair. I was like, oh well, like he I'm just raised, I'm feeling the need. I see Cleveland. I felt like I had done something I shouldn't do or something. I was like, oh no, I I don't know, I just ran downstairs and cracked. Scratching help.

unknown

I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

And then I ended up finding the guy from the hospital that was bringing the wheelchair, and he was this older gentleman. They wear red coats at Cleveland Clinic, and it's I think to wait a way to find somebody to help you. Um and so he was coming with his red coat and the wheelchair, and I said, I already got him a wheelchair. I I saw he needed one, and he was like, Great, easy, my job's done. Zip turned right around. It's like that lady didn't think it was easy, she's just mad. But again, main character energy, right? Maybe it wasn't about me at all. She was maybe upset about something else. And it had nothing to do at all with me grabbing the wheelchair. No. We're so quick to be offended, I think.

SPEAKER_01

I know, that's it too. And I think that's what's so hard. Because gosh, I really I said this to a coworker today that I'm just looking for ways to be offended lately, especially at work, it seems. They didn't do this again, and it's because you know, and it's like, oh my gosh, just take a step back and have a little bit of perspective of just everything we don't see. Yeah, character energy.

SPEAKER_00

Not in work, we can do it in our personal lives all the time. So, and it's more I think it comes down to phones. Like they didn't text me back, they didn't call me. I can see they read this text and they didn't reply and all the things. They didn't include me in this, or and we're so easy to just, yeah, feel like, but again, it's just this might be not be part of your story. So when I was doing a little bit of research, the person in the Bible that we should think about the most is Mary. Think talk about not being the main character. I know. And when she starts her journey where she's pregnant and she is gotta be terrified, and but she's just a tiny little piece of I know this greater story that God's using her for is Jesus. And so I when I read that, I was like, oh yeah, gosh, she's the perfect example of that. So the Bible verse I have is Galatians 1, 10, and it asks, Am I now trying to win the pro approval of human beings or of God? And I think that's the thing. When we focus on God's presence instead of people's perceptions, kind of changes the way we look at things.

We would love to hear your stories of anywhere that you saw the good or you were the good. And so they'll just bring us joy and we'd love to hear them. We are just loving all the summer weather. We just pray for every person who's listening that they just feel your love and presence, and that you just continue to remind us all that it is actually not about us. It's about you and that we can be the light and be a vessel for your glory. So we just pray that everyone listening is brave this week and makes one step in being courageous to A, we pray. Amen.
