Welcome to The WorkLife Question From School of WorkLife.  A weekly question to ponder what matters in your WorkLife.  Each question is drawn from the School of WorkLife Question Banks.  I'm your show host, Carmel O' Reilly.  This week's question is:  How might spaces honour diverse character traits? That's the question I want you to sit with today.  How might spaces honour diverse character traits? Let's explore the question through a character I created. Mary. How might spaces honour diverse character traits? Mary never thought of herself as someone who designed spaces. She was a project coordinator.  Timelines.  Deliverables.  Quiet efficiency. But when she walked into the empty community room — and began imagining what it might become — she wasn't thinking about events or activities. She was thinking about people. Specifically — what different people needed in order to connect in ways that felt natural to them. A corner where people could talk.  Space for quiet collaboration.  A place where conversations could happen without being organised. Not one kind of interaction.  Many kinds. Because people don't all connect the same way. The person who needs quiet before they can contribute.  The person who thinks best in conversation.  The person who connects through doing rather than talking. A space that honours only one way of being honours only some of the people in it. Mary understood this instinctively.  Not as a design principle.  As a character trait. Her inclusive instincts — her awareness of who was present, who was hesitating, what different people needed to feel genuinely welcome — shaped every decision she made about that room. That's what this question points at. Not the physical design of a space.  The quality of attention that goes into creating it. Every space — a room, a meeting, a team, an organisation — either honours the diversity of character traits within it or flattens them into a single way of showing up. The space built only for the loudest voice loses the person whose thinking happens quietly — and the space built only for quiet reflection loses the person who thinks out loud. The meeting paced for quick contribution loses the person whose ideas need time to form — just as the meeting that waits for everyone loses the person whose momentum comes from pace. The culture that sees only visible achievement misses the person whose work holds everything together — and the culture that prizes only the quiet, steady hand misses the person whose visible drive moves things forward. Mary's community room was designed to avoid all of that.  Not through policy.  Through attention to who was there and what each person needed to be fully present. That's what this question asks. Not what you would add to a space.  What you would notice first. Who is this space for?  What does it ask of the people in it?  And what does it make possible — or impossible — for those whose character traits don't fit its current design?
