✨ Reflection Questions

• What voices have I been giving authority to in my life?
• Which thoughts feel aligned with my deepest truth?
• What changes when I become aware of the witness rather than the story?
• Where in my life am I being invited into greater presence?
• What would it feel like to trust the deeper current already carrying me?

🔥 Practice of the Week

The Deeper Current Practice

1️⃣ Pause

Take three slow breaths.

Allow yourself to arrive fully in this moment.

2️⃣ Become Aware

Notice the sounds around you.

Notice sensations within your body.

Notice the movement of thoughts and emotions.

3️⃣ Recognize

Ask yourself:

"What is aware of all of this?"

Rest with the question.

4️⃣ Listen

Rather than following every thought, become curious about the awareness that notices them.

Allow yourself to rest in simple presence.

5️⃣ Carry It Forward

Throughout the week, pause for a few moments several times each day.

Take a breath.

Notice what is present.

And remember:

Beneath every wave is a deeper current.

Beneath every story is awareness.

Beneath every season of life is Presence.

Guide people or help people tap into like that that current, that that backdrop, that the thing that everything happens on top of. You know, because I kind of think of it like if you go to the cinema, there's a screen, but if nothing's playing on it, it's just a screen. The screen is always there. But over the years, many different movies play on that exact same screen from beginning to finish to end. Or I look at look at it like how do you guide people into like the depth of the ocean? Because you know, a few meters down below the waves, it's absolutely silent. It's absolutely still. But not a single wave would exist unless that depth exists, unless that stillness exists. Like everything in our lives, everything in all of existence happens on this backdrop of stillness. And it's available to all of us. So I was like, okay, well, I'm just gonna share a story about a time where I first experienced the stillness and what it took to get me there. Um, so I'm gonna share this story with you. So a few years ago, I was driving across country by myself, and somewhere along the way, I decided to take a little detour into the mountains of Southern California. And I ended up at this lake called Lake Arrowhead. So and I found this place overlooking the lake. The water stretched out below me, and I was sitting on top of this mountain, and the mountains wrapped around the horizon, and above me was this enormous sky that just seemed to go on forever. And for reasons I still don't fully understand, I sat down. And what started as a moment turned into an hour. And an hour turned into several hours. In total, I sat there in that one spot for nearly 10 hours. Now, before anybody romanticizes this story, I need you to understand something. The first part was not beautiful. The first part was incredibly uncomfortable because within 15 minutes, I wanted to leave. I wanted to get up. But part of me was looking for any reason to get up. Part of me wanted to check my phone. Part of me wanted to call somebody because people were coming to mind. And I hadn't thought about them for months. And I was like, oh, I should call them. Conversations I wanted to have. Conversations I wished I had handled differently. Problems I suddenly felt compelled to solve. I became aware of this almost magnetic pull toward distracting myself. Fortunately for me, and for that moment, on that mountain, there was no cell phone service. So there was no picking up my phone to distract myself. And looking back, that may have been the most important part of the entire experience. Because all of my usual exits were gone. I couldn't reach for a text message, I couldn't scroll Instagram, I couldn't check my email, I couldn't go online and disappear into somebody else's life for a while. I was left with only two options: leave or stay. And for whatever reason, I stayed. And as those hours passed, I started noticing something. Not the content of my thoughts, but the quality of them. And that's an important distinction. I've always known I have thoughts. We all have thoughts. What I had never really noticed was the texture of those thoughts. The assumptions, the narratives, the running commentary, the endless stream of opinions about myself, my life, my future, my relationships. And because those thoughts had been repeating for so many years, I had unconsciously given them authority over my life. Because to be honest, they sounded like my voice. So I assumed they were true. But the longer I sat there, the more something inside me began to shift. I started noticing that not every thought carried the same weight. Not every thought felt equally honest. In fact, some of them felt strangely familiar, almost rehearsed. The thoughts rooted in fear, those thoughts rooted in inadequacy, those thoughts telling me I wasn't doing enough, I wasn't moving fast enough, I wasn't successful enough at that point. I just simply wasn't enough. And they all sounded like me. But they didn't feel like me. I don't know exactly how to explain it because there was this subtle distortion to them, like hearing your own voice played back through a speaker with a little bit of static. Close enough to fool you, but not quite the original quality of the sound. And once I noticed that distortion, I couldn't unhear it. And I began wondering, where did this come from? Is this thought actually my truth? Or is this something I picked up along the way? Maybe my parents' fear, a teacher's expectation, or society's definition of success, a wound I never actually questioned, or a belief I inherited without even realizing it. And the more I sat there, the less interested I became in solving my life, and the more interested I became in understanding what was actually happening inside of me. And somewhere beneath all of that noise, I found something I wasn't quite expecting. It wasn't a revelation, it wasn't enlightenment, it wasn't some mystical experience. It was just like a quieter current, the steady hum beneath everything else. Something that felt genuinely honest. Something inside of me that wasn't trying to prove anything, something inside of me that wasn't trying to become anything, something that wasn't performing, it was just there, waiting. And the best way I can describe it is this imagine standing on the shore of a lake during a storm. The surface is chaotic. Waves, wind, movement everywhere. You might think the entire lake is turbulent. But if you've ever been in deep water, like I said earlier, you know something. A few feet below the surface, it is absolutely calm. So that day I realized most of my life had been lived on the surface. And most of that noise, most of the waves, was everyone else's wind. It had nothing to do with me. So reacting to every thought, believing every story someone else told about me, responding to every emotional wave. But beneath all of that was something much, much quieter. Something that had been there the entire time. And I think this is why bringing ourselves to stillness matters. Not because stillness is peaceful, it is, but sometimes stillness is deeply uncomfortable. And sometimes stillness introduces us to grief that we even we have not acknowledged. For me, it was grief of the person I was not yet, the person I had to be, I had not become, that I was expecting myself to be. And sometimes it introduces us to loneliness. And that's a big one, just this fear of loneliness. But you know, what's often underneath the loneliness is this really amazing sense of connection. So stillness doesn't always give us what we want, but it does give us something rare. It gives us the opportunity to see clearly. Most of us move through life so quickly that every voice inside of us sounds like truth. The voice of fear, the voice of shame, the voice of obligation, the voice of culture, the voice of family. And the interesting thing is when what I learned was oftentimes someone else's insult, when they first say it, sounds like their voice. But after a little while, if I take that insult and I start to believe it, it no longer sounds like their voice, starts to sound like mine. And it was never mine to begin with. The voice of comparison with social media. Uh, they're all talking at the same time, all of this noise. And I sat on top of that mountain long enough to start to see and feel beneath that noise. Because they're all speaking through my mind. And so we we mistake all of those voices as our own. And what stillness does, it creates a little space, just enough space to begin asking: is this true? Are these actually my beliefs, my thoughts? Is this actually who I am? Or is this simply a story that I have been carrying? So the gift isn't the stories disappear. The gift was that I stopped confusing them for who I was. That's what witnessing really means. Witnessing doesn't mean fixing, it doesn't mean analyzing, it doesn't mean suppressing, because all of those three things actually give it more power. It means learning how to sit beside your experience without immediately becoming it. It's it's the willingness to say, fear is here, leaving it that simple. Grief is here, leaving it there. Anger is here. The moment we decide to pick those up and start analyzing it, pulling it apart, that's when it starts to stick. That's when we start making it a part of ourselves. But witnessing is just simply stepping back and saying, this is what I'm experiencing right now. And through all of it, there is something else here too. The one who simply notices. The awareness in which all of it is appearing. The witness, the deeper current. The witness is that screen at the movie theater that all the stories play on. The witness is the blank page that every story is written on. The witness is the deep current that every wave happens on top of. And the witness is you, the part of you that existed before the world started telling you who you needed to become. And perhaps that's why silence can feel so confronting. Because in a world that is constantly asking something from us, what are you building today? What are you earning? What's next for you? Who should you be? Who are you becoming? How are you performing? Silence is one of the few places where nothing is asking anything of you. For a moment, you get to stop becoming. For a moment you get to stop performing. For a moment, you get to stop managing everyone else's expectations. And in that space, something remarkable becomes possible. You get to meet yourself. Not the version of you shaped by fear, not the version of you shaped by obligation, not the version of you shaped by endless striving, just yourself. And that's what happened for me on top of that mountain that day. And what I discovered sitting beside the lake is that silence didn't tell me who I was. It simply revealed everything that I wasn't. And when enough of that fell away, what remained didn't need to be created. It didn't, it had been there the entire time. So let's take a breath together and close with prayer. Take a deep breath in. Divine presence, thank you for the gift of this moment. Thank you for the awareness that is here now, this moment. Thank you for the deeper current that has been present through every chapter, every moment of our lives. As we gather in this sacred space, may we remember that beneath every story is a deeper truth. Beneath every role is a deeper identity. Beneath every expectation is a deeper freedom. May we trust the wisdom that emerges through stillness. May we honor the voice of our hearts. May we become familiar with the quiet presence that lives beneath the movement of the mind. May we recognize the witness, the awareness that sees, the awareness that knows, the awareness that remains. And as we move through the days ahead, may we carry this remembrance with us that the sacred is here, that presence is here, that we are already held within something vast, loving, and wise. May we rest in that knowing. May we walk in that knowing. May we live from that knowing. And may the deeper current continue to guide us home. Om Namashivaya. Amen. Aho Ashe. And so it is. Christopher will now lead us in today's guided meditation to embody this teaching.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you. That was amazing. Okay, everyone. Let's gently close our eyes if you feel comfortable doing that. And take a slow deep breath in. And exhale. Again, deep breath in. And release. One more deep breath in. Allowing yourself to settle into this moment. Noticing the support beneath your body. The rhythm of your breath. Notice the simple fact that you are here. There is nowhere else to be. Only this breath. Only this moment. Only this awareness. And allow your attention to rest on the sounds around you. Perhaps sounds close by. Perhaps sounds in the distance. Simply noticing. Listening. Perceiving. Now become aware of the sensations within your body. The feeling of the chair beneath you. The feeling of the air against your skin. The movement of breath within your chest. The aliveness already present appear. And now notice the movement of the mind. Thoughts appearing. Images, appearing, memories, appearing, plans, appearing, ideas appearing. Not attaching to those. But just noticing that awareness is here for all of it. Awareness welcomes every thought. Awareness makes room for every experience. And now notice the movement of emotion. Perhaps calm. Perhaps gratitude. Perhaps excitement. Perhaps something else. Whatever is present is welcome. Thoughts arise. Emotions arise. Sensations arise. Sounds arise. And awareness remains. Now imagine now that you are sitting beside a vast, beautiful lake. The surface of the water reflects the movements of the wind, the light dancing across the waves. Life continuing to move. And now allow your awareness to gently descend beneath the surface of the water. A little deeper. And a little deeper. Beneath the movement is stillness. Beneath the waves is calm. Beneath the changing surface is a quiet current, steady, present, and unmoving. Rest there. Rest in the awareness that is already here. The awareness that notices every thought, every sensation, every feeling, and every experience. Nothing needs to be added. Nothing needs to be earned. Nothing needs to be proven. Simply rest in the presence that has been here all along. The witness is here. Awareness is here. And release. And again, breathing in. And breathing out. And as you prepare to return, carry this awareness with you. The deeper current remains. The stillness, the presence remains. Available in every breath. Available in every moment. And available exactly where you are. Bringing your awareness back into your body. Bringing your awareness back into this community. And bringing your awareness back into this moment. And when you are ready, gently open your eyes and come back to this place. Okay, welcome back, everyone. Welcome back.

SPEAKER_02

All right, everyone. Welcome back. And I'm so glad that you all hope you all enjoyed your breakout rooms. It was really nice to connect with you all intimately. Uh before we move into announcements, we'd like to take a moment for sacred exchange. Every week, people gather here from around the world. Together we pray, we meditate, we remember, and we create a field of presence that extends far beyond this Zoom room. Merkaba Temple exists because people choose to support it, not as customers, not as consumers, but as stewards, as participants, as people who believe that space. Like this matter. So in a world filled with noise, this community creates space for stillness. Oh, thank God. In a world filled with division, this community creates space for connection. In a world constantly asking for our attention, this community creates space for presence. So every service, every meditation, every teaching, musical offering, breakout room, prayer, every moment of connection is made possible because members of this community choose to support it. If Merkaba Temple has touched your life, if these weekly gatherings have supported your spiritual journey, if this community has helped you feel more connected, more present, more awake, and more alive, we invite you to participate in today's offering. Not simply as donation, but as an expression of gratitude, as an act of sacred reciprocity, as a way of helping this work continue to reach hearts around the world. No gift is too small, every contribution matters, and every contribution helps sustain this temple and supports the growth of this community. So you can support Merkaba Temple at Merkabatemple.com forward slash donate or via Venmo at Merkaba Temple. To those who give regularly, thank you. We have so much gratitude. To those who give occasionally, we have gratitude. And to those who support through prayer, service, encouragement, and presence, we say thank you. You're helping create a sanctuary where people can gather, remember, and awaken together.

SPEAKER_00

And for that, we are truly grateful. I remember about 10 months ago when we first started our family temple. We didn't even know how we could would pay for our Zoom room. And today we're able to do that thanks to all of you. So thank you so much.
