Welcome to the Lamp and Light Bible Reading Plan, where we are seeking to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength with God's word lighting the way. I'm Tyler Sanborn, student ministry director at Compass Bible Church South Valley. Today is Tuesday, June 30th, 2026.

Deuteronomy 2 Wilderness Recap

Here's a quick summary of Deuteronomy chapter two. Deuteronomy chapter two continues the narrative, the recalling of the wilderness years as God through Moses and Aaron led his people through the wilderness around Mount Sinai. And we see the different uh ways that God had directed his people and led them through their wandering years after the Exodus. And we see some familiar names. We see Esau and the Edomites. We also see Moab and the Moabites and the different people that God had called Israel to avoid, to go around, to purchase from. And all along the way we see God giving and assigning certain land and territories to the different nations as Israel is passing through, wandering about, and have not yet entered the promised land. So there is a um a recap here of who would be engaged with, uh which peoples God would uh give into the hands of the Israelites and which and which people that God would assign and give uh territory to outside of the land of Canaan.

Listen intently to God's written word Psalm one twenty three. To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens, behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maidservant to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he has mercy upon us. Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt. Our soul has had more than enough of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

Where Our Help Really Comes From

As we consider our scripture reading from our previous Sunday service at Compass Bible Church South Valley, Psalm 123 has my mind and my heart thinking of where my help comes from. We look up to the heavens, we look up to God's creation, we look to the Lord, my eyes are cast upon the hills, and we look upward to see that it is the Lord who made heaven and earth who is our help. Our help comes from the Lord. And Psalm 123 uh echoes that, declaring that it is the Lord who is enthroned in the heavens, and it is God's hand uh that provides for us. It's through him that we receive mercy. We see some repetitive uh language here as we look to the different places that different individuals would be receiving their help or their their guidance uh or their direction. Verse two is uh speaking to servants and and maid servants, and who would be uh over them and who would be providing, uh sustaining them, the hands of their master, the hand of the mistress and uh for God's people. They are reflecting on who would be uh providing, and at the conclusion of verse 2, our eyes look to the Lord our God till he has mercy uh upon us. And the the psalm goes on to continue and describe uh people who are at ease, people who have not um submitted to Yahweh, to the Lord God, and followed his lead, submitting their lives to him. I know they are proud, they are full of contempt, and they are at ease. They do not submit and subject themselves to the Lord, they are comfortable where they are, they are confident in the decisions that they're making that are opposed to God, and that is a um uh a burden or a discomfort to God's people because oftentimes, as we think about it, people who do not love the Lord are in positions of authority even today. People who do not submit to the Lord, who do not do not bend the knee to the Lord God are in places of authority, and you might have uh a real name in mind as you think about your workplace, who uh maybe you have a supervisor, a manager, uh, a boss of some sort over you, and they do not know the Lord uh as savior, as God, as their ultimate authority in this life, and they might find themselves in this category of people who are at ease. And the psalmist here is uh looking to the Lord for mercy, uh, and and within that mercy there is a long suffering as people who are under duress would be experiencing different forms of uh trials, uh different temptations to uh to be anxious or to worry or to not trust the Lord. Um the psalmist is saying we have had more than enough of uh contempt. And the strong feelings that come with contempt are are those of strong disapproval or disdain or scorn. This is a a strong emotion that would be uh associated with this reality of people being uh uh in subjection to those who would have authority who do not obey God and those who do not submit to his leading in this life.

Israel’s Detours And Our Obedience

And uh we can take this same idea and look to the people of Israel as they wandered through the wilderness. They needed permission uh from the Lord to uh circumnavigate the the different geographical structures in the wilderness as they were wandering, and God given had given them specific instructions to uh to make purchases from the Edomites and to avoid a battle or conflict from other people groups as they wandered, and there is a a great temptation for us to uh to disobey uh the Lord, to make uh a plan that seems better in our own minds as we uh consider what to do next or what what move to make. Uh, we are not much different than Israel in the fact that we have directions uh from the Lord, commands to obey, and sin or temptation to avoid, and all along the way, the temptation to grumble or to complain or to think about our current position and just throw a pity party. Now, there are many opportunities for us to uh to obey the Lord uh with a joyful heart, with a heart that sings out his praises and reflects on God's provision as he has led us up to this very day. And the chapter that we have in Deuteronomy, the second chapter, is doing exactly that, uh, reminding Israel of the ways that God has provided up to this very point, and the ways specifically that he has uh addressed them and saying, This land is not for you, this land I give to the Edomites, or this land I give uh to the Moabites, and this land is not the land of Canaan, Canaan, in which that I I promised you would obtain. Don't drive out these peoples, this is not your land. Wait until I say, Go, and I will deliver uh the people into your hands, and I will drive them out so that you may obtain uh this land that I have set aside for you, this uh land flowing with milk and honey. And God will would do this in a variety of different ways, whether it's through through hornets or uh through uh through animals or through through battle, God is going to make uh his plan uh come to pass, his promise will remain uh sure and steadfast, and he will deliver on the words that he has spoken to his people. So we can take that to the bank as we look to uh the ways that God has provided for his people, wandering in the wilderness, and uh, as we think about the the upcoming uh speeches and the different uh commands and directions that God is going to give uh Moses to share to his people, as uh the book of Deuteronomy is a uh a primer for God's people to to consider and think about what what God is doing in their lives, how he's leading them, the mistakes that have been made along the way by by forefathers, and as they look forward with anticipation, uh how Moses is gonna challenge them, how will you respond? How will you follow after the Lord who has been faithful to you until this very day? And that is something that we can ask ourselves day after day as we reflect on God's faithfulness, his steadfast uh love for us, his kindness that he displays throughout our lives. Will we continue to remember, or will we forget uh the ways that God has shown his steadfast love and kindness to us?
