July 13, 2026 - Deuteronomy 13 & Psalm 134

We read Deuteronomy 13 and feel the weight of how seriously God treats idolatry and anything that pulls our hearts away from Him. We also reflect on Psalm 134 and the hope we have in our Redeemer, ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

Deuteronomy 13 Read Aloud

Deuteronomy thirteen. If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, Let us go after other gods, which you have not known, and let us serve them, you shall not listen to the words of that prophet or that dreamer of dreams, for the Lord your God is testing you, to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. You shall walk after the Lord your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him. But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has taught rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you out of the house of slavery, to make you leave the way in which the Lord your God commanded you to walk, so you shall purge the evil from your midst. If your brother, the son of your mother or your son or your daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your friend, who is as your own soul, entices you secretly saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known, some of the other gods of the peoples who are around you, whether near you or far off from you, from the one end of the earth to the other, you shall not yield to him or listen to him, nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him, nor shall you conceal him, but you shall kill him. Your hand shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people, you shall stone him to death with stones, because he sought to draw you away from the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and all Israel shall hear and fear and never again do any such wickedness as this among you. If you hear in one of your cities, which the Lord your God is giving you to dwell there, that certain worthless fellows have gone out among you and have drawn away the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods which you have not known. Then you shall inquire and make search and ask diligently, and behold, if it be true and certain that such an abomination has been done among you, you shall surely put the inhabitants of that city to the sword, devoting it to destruction, all who are in it and its cattle with the edge of the sword. You shall gather all its spoil in into the midst of its open square and burn the city and all its spoil with fire as a whole burnt offering to the Lord your God. It shall be a heap forever, it shall not be built again. None of the devoted things shall stick to your hand, that the Lord may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and show you mercy, and have compassion on you and multiply you, as he swore to your fathers, if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, keeping all his commandments that I am commanding you today, and doing what is right in the sight of the Lord your God.

Why God Treats Idolatry Seriously

Chapter thirteen of Deuteronomy has me thinking about the severity and the seriousness that God holds when we think about false gods, idol worship, and those who would seek to draw people astray to worship specifically foreign gods, gods that Israel has not known and has not heard of. This chapter on multiple occasions reminds the people of Israel it is Yahweh who drew you out of the land of Egypt to worship him. Out of slavery, he has redeemed you, as we see in verse five. The seriousness that God has and the severity of the punishment is unparalleled. Are all consequences and commands from the Lord that would be targeting those who would seek to draw people away to false worship.

Modern Distractions That Become Idols

So if you hear someone in your in your circle of friends or in a workplace or a family member, you're probably not gonna hear them say, Let us go after other gods that we might worship them. You're most likely not gonna hear that uh in your lifetime. You might hear challenges of why do you go to church or why do you serve, or why, why do you why are you so serious about church and church people and worship? What is all this? You might hear that on multiple occasions, uh, but it's unlikely that you will hear these exact words. Let us go after other gods. This is sadly uh a re a reality for the people of Israel as leaders, those who would dream prophets would and did draw people uh into idolatry, lead them into idle worship. And the punishment for such offenses uh is death. Any other god, any other graven image, anything that is um seeking to draw attention and worship that is rightly due to the God of the scriptures is is idol worship and is wicked. It's wicked and ultimately leads to death. And our time here in the year 2026, we have uh a different set of uh distractions and we have different draws that would pull us away from God. And though we might not recognize these behaviors, these routines, these rhythms of life, uh we must be careful not to uh align our lives in a way that would be worshiping and prioritizing and seeking to pursue, whether it's a hobby or uh it's a competitive team of some kind or anything like that. We have to be careful of uh what what draws our affections, what is going to satisfy us. A mentor of mine when I was in college would encourage me where you spend your most time, where you spend the most energy, where you spend the most time thinking, that is most likely what you are worshiping. That is most likely where your life and where your interest is. So uh that's a challenge for us today to evaluate. What is it that is drawing us? Is it the Lord? Is it a specific interest or thing that that isn't Him? And we need to be serious about this because if we're worshiping, we're seeking fulfillment, we're seeking peace and hope and anything other than God, it is a dangerous and slippery

Psalm 134 And Nighttime Worship

slope. Now, as we turn over to our psalm today, it's another short psalm, a three-verse psalm in uh Psalm 134. This passage uh of scripture, this chapter, points us to the work of the Levites, and there is uh a night watch that is going a night duty in the house of the Lord, in the tabernacle or in the temple where uh the priests would be raising hands to bless and worship and praise the Lord after uh an offering was made or after um incense was uh being burned. This this practice in this chapter draws our attention to uh the God of Israel, those uh instructions for the construction of the tabernacle, how to uh make a satisfactory and and pleasing sacrifice and worship to God. All over the past couple books that we've been studying in the book of Moses, Leviticus, and numbers, there are instructions, and even in Deuteronomy, there are ways that God has called his people to follow after him, reminding him, reminding the readers rather to worship God and worship him alone, the one who drew his people out of Egypt, the one that instructed uh them how to live a life that is following after him, that is pleasing to God. We have the Ten Commandments, and we have the book of Leviticus on how to how to execute different um steps of worship, how to live a life that is pleasing to God. And it's an encouragement for us today to see that God's people and his leaders, those who would be making sacrifices, have uh direct and specific commands, as we see in Psalm 134, and after a sacrifice has made, there's a blessing, and these servants who stand by in the night that keep the lamps lit, that make sure that God's uh holy place is being managed and cared for well. This is an encouragement, and the thought is towards this worship act, this worship location. This is drawing our mind and attention to God's tabernacle or the temple, and uh this last verse here in verse 3 may the Lord bless you from Zion or from Jul Jerusalem or uh or or from heaven, who has made heaven and earth. This psalm is focused and and fixed on the worship and and blessing of the Lord and can encourage us today as we we find ways to to step forward in obedience, to step forward and remember the works of the Lord. And as we refrain from being drawn away by our fleshly desire or by those who would try to distract us or uh dissuade us for bringing worship and uh and service to the Lord, we can look to the faithful God uh who has made a way for us to be redeemed.

Redemption From Ruth To Christ

I just wrapped up uh this evening as I record this on Sunday night, uh, Ruth chapter four, and it's focused and fixed on Boaz the Redeemer who marries Ruth. And we see in Deuteronomy chapter 13, it is Yahweh who has redeemed his people, purchased them out of slavery with a strong and mighty hand. It is Christ who has purchased us out of sin and darkness, and the cost, the purchase price for his people, the cost of redemption was his own life, his own blood, his body laid down as a living sacrifice for sinners like you and I. We have great hope and confidence and peace in the Savior, in our great Redeemer, because our Redeemer lives. He is surely alive and he is reigning, and we look forward to his return as we uh labor on uh in great anticipation for our great Savior and King to come back for uh for his bride. So I hope that was an encouragement to you
