Welcome to the High Vibration Living Podcast. I'm your host, Chef Whitney Aronoff, health supportive chef, founder of Starsea Kitchen, and creator of nourishing food rooted in real ingredients, intuition, and intention. This podcast is a space where food, wellness, spirituality, and everyday living meet. We explore how what you eat, how you live, and what you believe all shape your energy, health, and overall sense of well-being. You have a physical body, a mental body, an emotional body, and a spiritual body. And all need to be recognized and nourished so you can feel balanced and truly thrive. Only you know what your body truly needs. Let this be your reminder that you already have the wisdom to tune in to your food, your self-care, and your spiritual practices and choose what supports you best. Through personal insights and conversations with experts across food, wellness, and spirituality, we'll explore how to nourish the physical, emotional, spiritual, and energetic layers of who you are so you can feel your best and live with clarity, vitality, and purpose. Let's get started. Hi friends, welcome back to the podcast. Today I'm chatting with Dr. Nigma Talib, and she is a renowned naturopathic doctor, best-selling author, and leading voice in holistic health, skin, and hormonal wellness. She is internationally known for her work connecting food sensitivities, inflammation, and gut health to visible signs in the skin, including her widely recognized concepts like gluten face and dairy face. She and I spoke and we're both huge fans of the traditional concept of face reading and how that can tell you so much of what's going on inside your body. In this episode, we talk about truly the things that are working for her right now as a 50-year-old woman, the foods that she is eating, the practices that she brings into her home, and the lifestyle she's living to make sure that she physically feels good and is able to show up and do her work. She's extremely passionate about supporting clients from the inside out, and she's opening a new clinic in Beverly Hills within the next few weeks. I could have talked with Dr. Nigma a lot longer. She has a book that will be coming out later this year that is full of recipes to help people nourish themselves with food. So hopefully I'll be able to have her back on then and we can talk in even more depth. But this is a great start. Enjoy my conversation with Dr. Nigma. Cheers. Dr. Enigma, welcome to the High Vibration Living Podcast. Thank you, Whitney, for having me. Well, let's get right into it because you and I share so many similar philosophies on food and health and beauty from the inside out. So it's such a pleasure to connect you with my community and I really want to support them to continue to dive in and follow you and learn about all the different ways that you support women when it comes to their health and their roadblocks of not getting to the root cause. I love that. Let's do it. So let's start with our beverages. So I'd love to share what you and I brought to our table for this conversation today. I brought um filtered water with rose water added to it, and I brought um green tea.

SPEAKER_01

Spoken like a true chef. Okay, so mine is my vitamin C cocktail. Um, this is liposomal vitamin C with superberry antioxidants and zinc. Um, and it's like basically like having, if you think of an aurac value as an antioxidant measurement, this has an auric value of 6,000 and a half a cup of broccoli has an auric value of like 900. So you can imagine the antioxidants you're getting in this. And then I have my green tea matcha, which I really love. So I've kind of like copied you there. Um, and this is with macadamia nut milk, and it's like my, it's after I have something to eat, I will have this because I'll never have caffeine on an empty stomach.

SPEAKER_00

I do the same exact thing. My green tea is the jasmine pearl green tea from uh Ron Tea Garden, um, also known as Dragon Herbs, which is up in LA on Robertson. Where is your matcha from?

SPEAKER_01

I just get it from Cha Cha Matcha. I'm lazy to make my own matcha, so I just I get it delivered to me. Um, but I am gonna, I'm gonna take a uh a leaf out of your book and I'm gonna try to make my own matcha.

SPEAKER_00

You can't, oh, it's super easy. You absolutely can.

SPEAKER_01

Well, I have done it before. I've just, you know, it's a laziness.

SPEAKER_00

Well, what I was telling you earlier is how much I love face reading and how it's an ancient practice that absolutely holds true. And that's a little bit what you do. You have the ability to read facial types like gluten face, dairy face, sugar face. Can you tell me a little bit more about how you learned that skill?

SPEAKER_01

I mean, if we think about it, uh, our lymphatic system is also, you know, these are all our lymphatic areas here, all in our face. And when we eat certain foods, those foods cause inflammation in our body, causing certain inflammatory markers to increase. And as that happens, we get swelling and pockets of swelling, in particular here. Um, we can get some swelling under the eye. I know when I have gluten or dairy, like this whole area, is my friends know, they'll look at me. A really good friend of mine from high school is like, You've been having dairy. I'm like, How do you know? She goes, I can see it. And also, I do that a lot if I ever have dairy. So it's a combination. So that is one of the areas that I I created in my book, but that I wrote back in 2015 is the dairy face. And you can see like the dark circles, like the acne for women trying to get rid of their acne. Dairy is one of the uh inflammatory foods to avoid, although it's delicious, I know, but it is really, really harmful for people who have acne. It also causes lots of inflammation in the body. Um, and then we have gluten face, and you can see the gluten is puffiness. Think of gluten, think of pizza, the dough rises, the face gets puffy, you get some hyperpigmentation and the chin area, um, and the puffiness here. As you can see, like the skin, you know, um, and that when you have that puffiness, that's real aging because you're stretching the skin, you know, stretching, not stretching. Um, and then you have uh wine face, unfortunately, that's the only one that was very sad about. Um, and that has like the you know, the the lines here underneath the eyes, and also um, it's very similar to sugar. And then the last but not least, sugar face, which is actually the worst. Um, wine and sugar are the worst because they um cause um advanced glycation and products, which is um oxidative stress um in your body. Basically, it causes a collagen um to um deform, for lack of a better word. And then it causes your think think of sugar, it causes skin sagging.

SPEAKER_00

I stopped drinking wine and alcohol because I noticed the day after I would always crave sugar. So I started to realize the effects of having a glass or two was the same thing of being not eating sugar and then suddenly have it, and then the craving persists for multiple days in a row. After I drink a glass of wine for the next few days, I'd have this craving of sugar, and I it not just affect my energy levels, but how I looked, and it would last for three or four days, and I just realized it wasn't worth it anymore. It was taking too much out of my life instead of adding to it.

SPEAKER_01

And and that's really good that you noticed that and then you eliminated it for that reason. Um, the other thing that wine does is it feeds and sugar, it feeds the bad bacteria in your gut. So think of the bad bacteria like gremlins. Did you ever watch that show Gremlins? Yes, you're probably too young, but back in the day we there was a TV uh, I think it was a movie, um, and it was called Gremlins, and they kind of act up after if you feed them after midnight, they go crazy and they destroy the whole house, and they're kind of like little monsters, really cute, ugly little monsters, but that's kind of what's in your in your gut. Um, and so um think of that feeding them that sugar, they end up craving more the next day, and that's the hangover, that's the craving.

SPEAKER_00

What do most clients come to you seeking help for right now?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so I I have a lot of patients that are um divided into so many different categories, you know. So up right now I'm seeing a lot of long COVID, so people with chronic issues, never well since COVID, never well since the vaccine, um never since well since the pandemic. And we're seeing all these like elevations of spike protein, which is really scary. Um, I'm seeing elevations of um autoimmune more than I've ever seen in my career in 20 years. It's it's it's amazing. Heart disease I'm seeing in younger people in their late 30s and 40s. So I'm seeing a lot of chronic illness, um, people who have digestive issues, you know. Unfortunately, I'm known, or fortunately, I'm known as the poop doctor now. I posted this one video on Instagram about poop, and it was I got 10 million views and got written up in the New York Post and the Daily Mail, and I just got known as a poop doctor. But you know what? It's a crappy job, but I'm happy to do it. Absolutely. Yes. Because it's a really important thing to um to understand your poops because they can tell you a lot about your health. Uh, so to answer the question, I'm seeing a variety of patients, and as naturopathic doctors, that's what we do is we look at chronic conditions. A lot of people think when you think naturopathic medicine, they think preventative, and it's it's not it's not just preventative. I uh, you know, it's it's treating chronic illness. That's mainly what we do. Prevention is a given, you know, but it's treating the chronic illness, is what we do.

SPEAKER_00

For someone who's listening and they feel like they've tried going to so many doctors and they're still struggling with the same chronic issues that they've had for the past few years. When you first meet with clients, maybe what are some of the things that you suggest that they change in their diet or lifestyle that the listener can consider adding into their life? A quick pause to share something I truly used and love. I'm Chef Whitney Arena. And as a personal chef, I began sharing my Starseed Kitchen organic spice blends with private clients when I couldn't find high-quality seasonings that met my standards for their meal prep. My clients are people who care deeply about what goes into their food and how it makes them feel, just like you. Every Starseed Kitchen blend is made with the highest quality organic spices with no added sugar, no MSG, no anti-caking agents, and no fillers. Just clean, real ingredients that support your body and elevate your cooking. Two of my most loved blends are 11 Magic Herbs and Spices, a go-to everyday seasoning that works on just about everything, and Starseed Kitchen Adobo, a light, bright, anti-inflammatory blend designed for modern, health-supportive cooking. Every jar is prepared with intention, charged with kundalini mantras, quartzgiza crystals, and blessed by a shaman. Because spices and the food you prepare with them are not just nourishment, they're a transfer of energy. You can find Starseed Kitchen Spices at all Erawan locations or online at starseedkitchen.com. Use code Starseed for 10% off your online order. Now let's get back to the conversation.

SPEAKER_01

There's a couple of things to think about. A lot of people think about taking drug medication and then getting a result. Think of your food as drugs, okay? So whatever you're putting in your mouth is going to act like a drug, exactly the same way. So food as medicine. So when you're eating something, be mindful. Okay, is this something I really want or am I dehydrated? Dehydration is one of the biggest things. People get hungry because they're dehydrated. And so I always say, and it's such a boring thing to say, and then this is why I really invented this because I don't like drinking water. And so I had to find a way of hydrating myself so that I wouldn't have those hunger cues to like eat something that I really didn't need to eat. Um, and really like having a good relationship with food. So, first of all, I establish a good relationship with food because food is meant to be enjoyed. And you as a chef, I'm sure, you know, including some of these dairy, gluten, sugar, wine in the food is delicious. And there is a rule called 80-20. So I don't live 100% of the time dairy-free. As you can tell, my friend noticed when I was having dairy because I was, you know, I had a result, a side effect of it. We can't all be perfect. But if we know something is challenging us and challenging our health, I asked the patient on a scale, you know, on a scale of one to 10, how committed are you to getting rid of that concern, right? So if it's a 10 out of 10, then that means we need to go 10 out of 10 on the food. But do it in a realistic way that is going to empower the person and tell them what they can eat versus what they cannot eat.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, absolutely. If you don't love what you're eating, it doesn't matter how healthy it is, you're not going to fully assimilate all the nutrients in there because you're kind of pissed you're eating it. Um, and I have found that, and hopefully the people listening can can recognize when you start to understand and listen to your body a little better, you'll listen to the subtle cues, and then you can choose a higher quality version of what you're craving. So I have found I only crave dairy the week before or the week of my period. So if I'm gonna have dairy, I'm gonna purchase the best quality I can find in my area. So I'm gonna choose an organic raw cheddar, I'm gonna choose a sheep feta, I'm gonna use it sparingly, but I'm gonna give myself what it's craving, but the highest quality that I can find or afford. And so I really encourage people, like instead of fighting yourself physically and mentally of the things that you love, have it sparingly but quality, and then see how your body reacts.

SPEAKER_01

That is so well explained. And and and I feel like if you give your body permission to do that, you'll have less of a side effect. And also you're getting the higher quality of it, right? And if you do notice that you feel horrible with it, then you can say, okay, hmm, how much of is this worth it to do again? Right. And the only, you know, the definition of an insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and wanting a different result. And I do that, I've been doing that for many years about wine. Um, and I've learned my lesson now in my 50s. Um, I have to be very careful because things change hormonally for women in their 50s. They can't, it's it's there's a whole histamine situation with wine, sugar, histamine, the alcohol, the three of those are just a no-no for perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause.

SPEAKER_00

Histamine is something that's coming up a lot more with my personal chef clients. And I definitely have clients who are asking the chefs on my team to prepare their meals and then freeze them. And then they reheat them because they find that they have less of an inflammatory reaction. Um, what is going on with clients you're seeing that you've realized it's a histamine issue?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there's something called MCAS, which is uh caused by a dysregulated immune system. And we're seeing a lot of this post-COVID. Uh, we're seeing a lot of it in patients that are perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause. Um, and you know, in general, there's a higher population of people that have an histamine intolerance, like, you know, chocolate, wine, certain dairy, cheeses can cause your mast cells, which are part of your immune cells, to degranulate and start to release histamine. Now, we know if that happens in high amounts, we can go into anaphylactic shock. That's like a nut allergy. But if you have like a kind of slow releasing histamine over a period of time, it can cause not anaphylaxis, but really, really, you know, joint pain, muscle aches, migraines, um, you know, the list goes on and on, uh, allergies, um, sinus congestion, brain fog. Um so it's it's important to um speak to your uh naturopathic doctor about these different things because we'll be able to isolate what foods are causing what issue for you.

SPEAKER_00

Now, how quickly do people see results when they remove a food from their diet under your suggestion? Is it gonna be three days? Is it gonna be a month?

SPEAKER_01

It's really good question. Uh it so varies. It it the variation of that, I wish I had the answer and I wish it was like I could say three days. Yeah. But for someone like a with, think about it this way. If you have a super stubborn immune system, it's gonna take you longer. So think about the stubbornness of the person. The most stubborn the body is for whatever reason, it will take longer. And the more, you know, for me, I notice things right away. I'm very sensitive to um if I do something good for my body, if I do something bad in my body, my body knows it right away. Some people don't even notice, you know, and they're like, oh, and now I have a migraine. Oh, I've been doing this for a week and I've been fine. And then on day seven, they'll get a migraine. And they won't associate it with what they did on day one. Do you know what I mean? It's not an immediate gratification, it's not like a nut allergy. You'll eat nuts and then you'll have an anaphylactic. It's not how it works. Food intolerance works anywhere from four minutes to four days, even histamine um foods can do the same. Good to know.

SPEAKER_00

So, what's working for you right now with food? Can you share with us a little bit about what you're having for breakfast or lunch for dinner in this winter season that's like really working for your health at this stage in life?

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if I've told you, but I'm uh I finished my manuscript to my new book called The Clean Hormone Journey. And in that book, I have a whole section on recipes, like breakfast recipes, lunch recipes, dinner recipes. And I worked with a restaurant here in LA called Chamont, and it's this lovely um lady named Lila who owns a chain of these French bakeries. There's a vegan one, and she really helped me develop these recipes because we're both so um crazy about eating healthy and eating delicious food. So we created a combination. It's called the Med Indian Diet. So it's Mediterranean and Indian mixed, and it has um, you know, Indian inspired, Mediterranean inspired, which are the I think the the marriage of two of the most amazing, I thought you'd get a kick out of this being a chef, having the the marriage of these two of most amazing longevity uh, you know, spices, foods. Uh I like to combine those two in my diet. And a lot of the time for breakfast, I'll have very warming foods. Like I'll I'll have a soup. Um, I know it sounds crazy, but you know, a chicken soup with lots of you know vegetables, but cooked nice and hot and a little bit of quinoa inside. Um and and and the reason for that is you know, think of your body like a Ferrari. You know, I'm a 53-year-old Ferrari. If I just switched on the car and drove my car through the mud, it's gonna die. You know what I mean? So I gotta warm it up. I gotta switch on the Ferrari, warm it up, show it some sun outside, walk in nature, plant yourself, you know, on soil, you know, these are the things you have to do in your 50s. It's okay. It's it's massive change from my 30s and 40s, but I kind of love it because you really are understanding your body and how to work your body, used to be able to drive through the mud like that 20 or 30 or 40-year-old Ferrari, and now you're a 53-year-old Ferrari and you're thinking, oh wait, I gotta start, I've gotta take my time, I've got to have my soups. I'll do like a soup, um, you know, like uh with turmeric inside. So it's like Mediterranean, Indian. Um, and um, and then for lunch, I'll do like protein, uh steamed vegetables, I'll have also a protein smoothie um after for dessert, and then my my dinner will be super light, like it could be like fish, like a white fish with um um quinoa, or um I love purple potatoes, and um and then you know, if I'm still hungry after that, I'll drink some water, and this is so boring because I'm super I'm dehydrated all the time, and I'll crave something sweet after like food at time with the there's Postmenopause just makes you crave everything. So I'll crave something, but then I'll I'll say, Nope, I'm gonna drink this whole thing of water, and then my craving will be gone. So I've learned how to manipulate or understand is a better word, not manipulate, understand my body as I'm, you know, it's taken me a while. And so I hope the listeners out there, like in your 30s and 40s, get it sorted now because by the time you're my age, you'll be laughing. There'll be a breeze. Now you're not gonna have to go through what I went through with the hormones.

SPEAKER_00

SPEAKER_01

I moved to LA in 2019, so I had to find a place to practice. And by the time I was looking for a place to practice, the pandemic hit. So I opened up a small little clinic out of my house in Beverly Hills. And it was only for patients that I knew. I would rarely take new patients unless somebody begged me to take their sister or their cousin or someone. And then I recently, well, not recently, it's been two years, I signed a lease uh in an office in Beverly Hills, beautiful clinic that's going to be opening in literally four weeks. And it's called Naturopathic Longevity. And so I had to build, I, you know, there's basically a wellness center in my house. I have a hybrid earth chamber. I have a PMF mat in every room. I have um a time lift machine made in Italy for hydropuration and radio frequency. I have Morpheus 8, which is the radio frequency microneedling. Um, oh gosh, I have so many devices. I have an oxygen infusion machine uh from Germany. Um yeah, I have a lot of wellness hacks in my home, which we'll be moving to my new longevity center. Um but I'm gonna keep my chamber in my house because I love it. It's a it's a soft chamber, and um I go in it probably pretty regularly three times a week. Um I bring in my dog. Amazing. He loves it, and his health has really benefited from it because he had uh a really bad um condition, irritable bowel disease, and it's really helped him heal. So I also go out in nature. I have a backyard where I just like you know, put my feet in the grass and in the morning try to look at, you know, even if it's whether it's sunny or not in LA, I just sort of stand outside so that my pineal gland and my circadian rhythm can align instead of going on my phone first thing, which is what I did for many years. Um and I lie on LED red light on a red light bed um regularly. So yeah, I have a lot of hacks and you know, but I don't buy like expensive bags and all that stuff anymore. I I now all all everything is invested in like hacks. I don't like to use the word hacks. You know what I mean? Like because they aren't hacks because they exist.

SPEAKER_00

They aren't hacks, they're they're they're tools. They're tools. They really are, yeah. I find a lot of these tools, like I have to have them in my life every week in order to perform and show up at the level that I want to be at in life. Um, and so there's nothing more valuable than investing your money in tools that allow you to live.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, and a sauna. I have a sauna. Yes, I have a sunlight and sauna, which I love. And it's got the uh LED light in there as well. And I just do meditation. I always do meditations in all my tools, like in my hyperbaric chamber, I'm doing a meditation. In the sauna, I'm doing a meditation. You know, always like pairing it with a meditation.

SPEAKER_00

Is there a particular type of meditation routine that you like to follow that you receive from a practitioner, or do you just do your own guided meditation?

SPEAKER_01

There's a couple of things. Um, one is called a sata nama. It's sata nama. And you know, you sing it, you whisper it, and then you say it in your head. And it's you know, 13, 12, 13 minutes. Um, and it really, really is a game changer uh for me. And then I do have like another um spiritual mantra that I've been doing since I was super young. Um, meditation is is part of a cult, our culture, uh, Indian culture. So it's very normal to meditate. Um and um so yeah, I've been doing it since I was quite young. But you know, the problem with that is I kind of immerse myself into Western society and when nobody was talking about meditation back in the day, I lost it all, you know, and now it makes me remember that hey, you don't go with the flow of what where you are, you have to stick to your own um beliefs. But I it's it's so easy to get out of the habit of meditating, and then you feel the anxiety come back up with all the different information you're getting from the world, and then you're like, okay, I need to meditate, and that's been really strong for me this week. I've literally been meditating, double meditating than I normally do because it's just been such a heavy time, but um, it really is my medication. I would say it's my top medication is meditation.

SPEAKER_00

So you're very intuitive, and you're probably such a great doctor because you can physically feel as well. You're picking up on subtle energies. So people are getting more than just the the study and the wisdom that you've gotten from becoming a doctor and what you've studied, they're getting the subtle wisdom that you have as a natural gift.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, that's so kind of you to say that. It's so funny. My patients tell me that, and it's it it's it's so lovely. I know I haven't met you, but that's so kind of you to say. Um, I really do feel that even just being a woman at basic is we are intuitive, you're intuitive. And um I think women for women is so important. And we talked about this, you know, before we started this podcast, is you know, how women you cannot understand a woman's health, you will not be able to understand a woman's menstrual cycle if you haven't experienced it. Uh, and we need to be more for women more than ever before. You know, we cannot let um, you know, especially um affluent men or, you know, well-known male doctors, you know, take responsibility for our health. Um I I really feel like those people need to earn that trust and be vetted before they're allowed to take a woman's health. That's just, you know, I've been saying this for years, but now it's even more solidified than ever before. And I feel that, you know, women doctors in wellness need to be at the forefront of longevity, including people like yourself who have, you know, you're using food as medicine. You know, that there should be no separation. You know, you should make it feel like it's, you know, it can harm you if you're do eating the wrong food.

SPEAKER_00

And if the wrong person is preparing it.

SPEAKER_01

Yes, if the wrong person is preparing it. There's so much that goes into it, right? Like you prepare it with unclean hands, or you know, um, you mix the food in the wrong bowls with like contaminated meats or what you know, there's so much that goes into, and then how you the the you know what I learned through this experience of making these recipes is the sequence of how you put the ingredients in.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Right? It's so so different.

SPEAKER_00

Turns out different, especially with Indian cooking, how you you layer flavors with spices, you don't throw it all in at once, it's layered over time, and you have to trust your intuition because sometimes you don't need as much of an ingredient one day as you did the other, because that's the thing with food, and that's the thing with our bodies, is is the subtleness. Um, some days you need a little more, a little less, and you have to learn to pick up on that because other people can't do that for you.

SPEAKER_01

I couldn't agree more. That is, it's so interesting, you know, that about the Indian cooking and how it differs from day to day. Um and like every chicken curry that I make is different. Yep. And so I made a chicken curry for a good friend of mine, and he was like, I love this. And I'm like, oh God, how can I replicate this again?

SPEAKER_00

Fish curry is one of my favorite things to make for myself because it's pure medicine. It's all those spices, all that turmeric, ginger, garlic, whatever vegetables are on hand. You get your beautiful white fish, and then you get all that broth, which I always make sure I personally put chicken bone broth in. So it's just a bowl of medicine. It's hot, so it's stoking the fire of the gut. Um, and they're I I love what you're doing because more people need to understand how you can make a delicious meal that truly is medicine. And I always feel more energized and more youthful every time I incorporate that into my week.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm trying to make recipes that are under 20 minutes. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Because I understand we don't have time, but you know, we have to make time to nurture and feed these beautiful bodies of ours, you know? I think we're worth it.

SPEAKER_00

Absolutely, yes. And it should be fun. Well, where can the listeners continue to learn from you and with you and where they can connect with you online?
