Book Review: The Leadership Pipeline by Ram Charan, Stephen Drotter, and James Noel
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your company just promoted your best salesperson to sales manager. Congratulations — you just lost your best salesperson AND gained your worst manager in a single transaction. And you'll do it again next quarter. And the quarter after that. The number one way companies destroy talent is by promoting people into roles they were never developed for.
In this Stagnation Assassin Book Review, I break down "The Leadership Pipeline" by Ram Charan, Stephen Drotter, and James Noel — three people who built the leadership development infrastructure for GE's legendary talent factory and then codified it into a model any organization can adopt.
The core insight is devastating: every level of leadership requires a fundamentally different set of skills, time applications, and work values. Promotion isn't a graduation — it's a mutation. The skills that made you great at level three will make you catastrophic at level four. The six-passage framework maps every transition from managing self to enterprise leader, and gives you a diagnostic tool to identify every leader in your organization who's operating at the wrong level. One leader stuck in the wrong passage can stagnate an entire division.
The succession planning integration is gold — the authors argue that leadership development and succession planning should be the same process, not two separate programs run by different teams. And Drotter's GE pedigree provides the proof. The leaders who came out of that pipeline went on to run companies like American Standard, Raytheon, and W.R. Grace.
Then the murder board. The six-passage model is built for corporate aircraft carriers — if you're running a twenty-person team, it's a solution looking for a problem. The book reads more like a consulting manual than a leadership narrative. And the clean linear ascent model doesn't match the fluid reality of modern careers where leaders operate across multiple levels simultaneously.
Verdict: 4 out of 5 Kills. For any organization with more than a hundred employees and ambitions to grow, this is required reading. You don't have a leadership problem. You have a transition problem.
