So, gentlemen, uh we won't date the years that we uh we went to high school, uh, although I graduated in 1996.
SPEAKER_001998.
SPEAKER_03You know what? That was a quick one.
SPEAKER_01By the way, by the way, now you put me in a very awkward position. Thank you, boys. Um 1982. Class of Somerville High School. College? Somerville, South Carolina.
SPEAKER_00Crazy. Crazy. 1982. He's so young at heart, too, you know. I know. I know.
SPEAKER_01That's why it's the Thompson twins were a hit group back then. Thompson twins. You probably don't know who that is.
SPEAKER_00I do not know who that is. Correct, you know. Okay.
SPEAKER_03I I bring up the year because you guys play hacky sack in uh high school.
SPEAKER_00I did. Um, not well. Um, it's I so I learned as an athlete early on that I'll never go my feet. I couldn't kick a football, I can't punt, I couldn't play soccer, um, which was made me a very bad hacky sack player as well. We used to play hacky sack at lunch, me and my friends. Um, and it usually ended with them hysterical laughing at me going into a rage over stinking in hacky sack.
SPEAKER_01How about you, coach? Did you play hacky sack? Um, it was a little bit before my time. Hacky sack came along in 1972. Um, it had not really hit Charleston and Somerville area until my brother's mid-80s in the mid-80s. It was big time mid-80s.
SPEAKER_00Just missed it.
SPEAKER_01I I missed the hacky sack craze.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yes. Very, very hacky sack craze is now though.
SPEAKER_01I hear it's back. Back everything comes back, even hacky sack.
SPEAKER_03Back in full force. Now, when you played hacky sack as a kid, was it just you guys just kicking the thing around?
SPEAKER_00Do you have a game or rules or uh we we just kicked it around uh with no rules, uh no game. It was more just like basically what we did was it we would do it until somebody missed, and then we would absolutely shame that person. That's basically how it went. Now, I watched a video this week of Iona Prep doing hacky sack in the um outside their gym, and they had some crazy things going on where um someone would catch on their chest and they'd lay down, and then something on the top and they'd roll over and they'd spring the person, it was or on their back. It was crazy. It was crazy with the deal.
SPEAKER_03So you have you have flips, you have those things, and actually, you guys were lucky. Like shaming the kid was one thing. I saw one about white planes, yeah, where when the kid who dropped it, the other kid took the took the hacky sack and threw it at him. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Hit him on the back.
SPEAKER_03That's what I was in the parts. I was a big rifler of the hacky sack. I mean, listen, this this hacky sack thing is is insane. There's actually a section one hacky sack uh new Instagram. Okay, it's not sanctioned section one hacky sack Instagram, but you'll know it because it has the section one logo. Uh, and they have competitions that they put up there week by week. So one high school submits a video, the other high school submits a video, then they play it together as a hacky sack competition. Who has the best volley, who has the best moves, backflips.
SPEAKER_01It's almost like an athletic version of West Side story.
SPEAKER_00Speaking of 1982.
SPEAKER_03And on that note, we're going to um we're gonna move on. Welcome back to the Winnie Moment Show. Uh, it's uh we're right in the heart of spring season, and we have a lot going on before these championships happen. But we want to start off by talking about an event that you went to this uh this week in Kevin that's big with your family.
SPEAKER_00Talk about something that should have been invented like 50 years ago was unified sports, right? So I know schools, most schools have unified sports now. Um, and obviously it's it's an extension of Special Olympics, basically, right? So unified is is um students within a school, um special needs, and you the unified aspect of it is athletes and mainstream students come and assist on the court in basketball, on the field, um, or on in the court in volleyball. And uh it's it's awesome. And I was at the game yesterday. Irvington took on Dobbs Ferry, and I brought my kids to go watch. My wife, Donna, is very involved with it. Um Gina Maher is the coach, just adding adding to her win, career win total. Absolutely. Um Legends. Taken down Dobbs Ferry yesterday in the unified game. Um, but uh it was really fun. And I obviously got to go in coach board. We got to see uh the Moon family, Jacob Moon, the younger younger brother of uh Ella Moon. Yes, Ella Moon's worked your camp many times.
SPEAKER_01Oh, she's been here since forever.
SPEAKER_00I know she's home from college, home from Syracuse, former Dobbs Ferry basketball star. Not since 1982, though. Yeah, no, and so she's uh she comes in, and obviously her mom, Christine, was there yesterday, and um it was just special, it was just awesome. And like the funny thing is, like, my son was watching, and um he goes, Dad, and like the first court, he goes, That kid number three on Dobbs, he has he has eight points. I'm like, all right, we're not we don't keep track of it. There's another score, but whatever. Well, Dylan Devaney, whose birthday it is today, kept track. He had a kid at 43 points in the unify game. He was awesome. Yeah. And and, you know, um, he was just coming down the court and uh just wouldn't miss, just you know, getting rebounds, putting it back up. It was great. Yeah, it was a lot of fun. But uh great atmosphere, and just uh it's uh it's coach, it's uh that reminder that um, you know, we hear about people with um you know recruiting and and worrying about uh scholarship offers and uh playing time and who's yelling at the refs and the treatment, all this stuff. And then you realize that like there's this other world out there, and uh you should feel very fortunate um, you know, to athletes, you know, just because you don't get that offer or whatever. You have you know, there's uh unified sports can give you a nice little perspective. It reminds you.
SPEAKER_01It gives you a very realistic perspective of life and it uh and it allows you to appreciate uh the things that you have take for granted, and uh right that you nor that you can take for granted, yeah, and the blessings that you've received.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, you know, in in in your own personal life, and it, you know, not everything always is as important as you think it is when you put everything in person.
SPEAKER_00Reminded it as an adult yesterday, watching the parents of the athletes on the on the court, um, you know, just the emotion that they had, and also just like you know, watching them go from the court to the car and just how nothing's easy, right? And uh I'm very we all we should be very fortunate for it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, when you have kids, you you you the first thing people say, like uh, you know, what are you what are you thinking about when you have kids? I want I want healthy kids. Yeah, right after that, you can fit the rest, and and you know, we take things for granted all the time. Totally. Uh, no matter how grateful you are and and how well you live through that lens. So the idea that that your family's part of this, and I love that uh the birthday boy uh was was keeping score, or I keeping the count of that that amazing 43-point flight. Yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00Um he was very into it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, very into it, and and and it's an amazing story. And it brings me to our our next story, which uh is sports brings people together. Yeah, I think it's something that that brings communities together, brings sports to people together. You guys have played a ton of it and seen it and been around it, and there's such emotion around it to your point that we kind of forget what's really important. But uh, we got a story that was submitted to us uh this week, which I absolutely love because it was submitted by the opposing coach, uh Aaliyah Rivera.
SPEAKER_00Rivera, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Aaliyah Rivera, okay. Uh video that we will we will show here. Uh this young lady threw a touchdown. Came out in the field, came out in the field in a girls flag football game, threw a touchdown from her wheelchair.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, came out in the wheelchair. Uh, Rivera. Now um did a little little research and uh found Alia Rivera's uh Instagram and she's been her whole life, has been this way, been in a wheelchair and struggles, um, and uh she doesn't let it impact her. I mean it's amazing. She came out, and the best part was that the video that submitted to us um came from uh Arnold Ben Cosme, as you said, Nourishel parent. Uh his daughter's an eighth grader, Estella, and she's an unbelievable athlete. She's gonna be a superstar if she continues in this sport, and um, you know, just they got to watch this and witness this, and it was uh pretty amazing to see. Um and it really the best part was when you see her coming off, uh wheeling off, and just the excitement on her face, the happiness on her face, and you think these little gestures. Um so I remember when I first, you know, but Tony DiMadio had a had a uh an um a manager, EJ Grigello is his name, and he was uh uh team manager of the Somers football team and let him go in the game and run the football, ran for a touchdown, and it made ESPN, it was a great thing, and it was a cool thing. And obviously, since then that sort of moment has been afforded to to athletes, you know, who have special needs. And it sort of kind of gets like a little look past sometimes because it it's they've seen it before. Um, but you gotta remember that athlete, that's their first time getting it, yeah. Uh having that moment and a moment they probably never thought they'd have. So while us as viewers and as sports viewers, we've seen this stuff so many times, but like you should never just stop appreciating it.
SPEAKER_03No, she's so deeply involved, she's she's a freshman, her, she wears number 17, she's a team manager. So, you know, a shout out to her coach too, coach Coach Yancey, uh, for making this moment happen. Because to your point, yes, we've lived a long life and we've seen these things before. I mean, coach more than us, but uh it's it's been out there often. Yeah, but now to to actually have coaches, players, what I loved about watching this was how all the girls were. Right, how all the girls were were it was a moment they were right, both both sides, both sides of the of the ball, they were so respectful of it and and so enjoying of it, like it's just a moment. So it's a moment to be a proud parent, moment to be a proud sports, and all of that.
SPEAKER_01If you're if you become emotionally numb to that situation and and that that opportunity, then something's wrong. Because you know, we've seen it a bunch because we're all involved in athletics. However, I had goosebumps when that young lady threw that touchdown pass.
SPEAKER_00And if you don't have tears in your eyes, something veterans coming home and seeing their family for the first time in a long period of time and and moments like this, she's never getting down to, right?
SPEAKER_03Absolutely, not at all. A thousand percent. She she threw a good spiral. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01She threw a good ball. She threw it, she's a good catchable ball and finished with the TD. It was awesome. Yeah. So good. So good.
SPEAKER_03Well, shout out to you, Coach. Shout out to you, Leah and your parents. Uh, we know life's not easy, and we appreciate you creating these winning moments. And we appreciate you guys submitting them. These are moments that we can never capture without your help. Uh, those who watch this audience, uh, our audience, I mean, we can't do that without your help, so keep submitting those moments at the winymoments.com. You can DM us directly on Instagram as we got this one. We want to share these stories, but we definitely need your help. Speaking about Instagram, let's go uh let's go to see if the internet agreed or disagreed with Kevin's top picks for uh girls and boys lacrosse. Okay. I'm loving this segment too. I absolutely loving this aspect.
SPEAKER_00Doesn't matter what I think. Doesn't matter what they think either. No. It matters what happens on the field. That's that's why we're talking about the other thing. But there is an interesting one. The first one, the class A one is going to be interesting because I didn't think this was sort of debatable. The internet responded. Uh some things happened this week, and now I'm sort of wondering myself. So go ahead.
SPEAKER_03All right, so let's go with the girls. Uh you had Suffering leading Class A, and social media said you were absolutely out of your mind. Mamarinak, the community showed up and said uh Mamaranak will be the uh Class A champion.
SPEAKER_00So I didn't think, you know, so Mamarinak's played itself schedule, had some some some close losses, but this past week, um, beating Wappingers the way they did as my number two team, beating them 18-11, and it makes you really think to yourself like, hey, listen, they have they could they can maybe content with uh with suffering at the number one spot. And um, you know, they had lost four to five. Uh, they beat Albertus Magnus handily, and then they knocked off Wappinger. So back to back, good quote back quality wins for them. And uh Marinick is sort of back in the hunt. I mean, and uh coach Dennis Hurley taking over as the uh the coach there in the program. That's real.
SPEAKER_01He seems to find a way to get it done over there, and he's done a very good job on the girls' side, not just in lacrosse. He's also done a great job as a basketball coach on the girls' side as well.
SPEAKER_00They've they've lost they lost obviously to Suffron a couple weeks ago, 17-7. So obviously not a close game. But from what I if I remember correctly, it was sort of like was a competitive game that got away from them in the second half. Um, possession is everything in the sport. Faceoff. The face draw on the girls. Uh Nevin Sullivan from uh from Suffron is as good as they come, so it's gonna be tough. But Marin's gonna figure that out. They can figure that out, and then that changes the whole thing.
SPEAKER_03And that's why we play the game. So going down the classes, uh the rest of the classes, you got full agreements. Class B, C, and D, the uh the Nyak crew stepped up and said that they are gonna be number one. The Rye crew stepped up in Class C, they're gonna be number one, and then Class D, Pleasantville, they uh they all agree with you as well. You had a lot of agreements this week on the girls' side.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think it's uh it's a little bit of a testament to the sport and just how uh teams, you know, Nyak's on the national level. I mean, they're defending state champions. Amazing. They just lost to Darienne yesterday by a goal. Um, they beat Rye in overtime by a goal, obviously. Um, and uh scored overtime to win an unbelievable matchup. Unbelievable game. And it was like one of those games you're watching the whole time. You're like, this is this is a sport at its highest level at high school. Um and uh Nyak and Rye, and just the other thing about that game, too, which was incredible to me to watch, was just like sort of like the admiration these two teams. I I kind of assume when teams are competing and playing in championships, there's not bad blood, but I think there'd be more of a rivalry, and there's definitely uh a closeness of these two teams. Oh, I think it's a respect. Um, and uh Nyak and Rye are probably just grateful they don't have to go through each other again, play their regular season game. Correct, it sort of means something for seating, but not really. But both teams are gonna be heavy front runners going into the postseason, and they want our uh they won our um our poll here. And then Pleasantville is probably the clearest of favorites in uh in class D. Just the way that they're undefeated and just running through everybody. Kevin, I don't think anyone's undefeated. He said the wrong he said it's coach, he said it, coach. There's not many undefeated teams. We did a whole thing on undefeated teams a few weeks ago. There's only two of them left in the section. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the KD Day Jinx. I don't know. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Another one go down yesterday. Tabez baseball finally lost. Finally, best thing that could have happened to them. Tabazee baseball losing. They were 18-0. Baseball is almost like a fluke to go on the eight to go undefeated. Um they won't down 1-0 to Albertus Magnus. Uh Caleb Hertzell pitched and uh they got beat. And I don't think it's a bad thing. I think it's actually a very good thing. No, I think it is I think it's great in baseball.
SPEAKER_01It's just Westlake Guttles flag football and uh Pleasantville Girls Lacrosse. I don't think is there anybody really uh let's be honest. Is is it Pleasantville Girls Lacrosse team? Do they really have a challenge in that area?
SPEAKER_00Well, I would have thought Bronxville, um, but Brian's which has been a traditional powerhouse. Yeah, Bronxville lost to Briarcliffe. So Briarcliffe is the next team, and Pleasantville beat them pretty handily.
SPEAKER_03So and listen, that's what that's why we played, that's why we played the game, gentlemen. So let's move to the boys real quick. Uh Class A, hands down agreement with you, Kevin Mamarinac. Uh Class B, May Pack, strong community, came up and said uh uh Mr. Devaney Jr. here is wrong, and uh they will be the Class B championship team versus Yorktown. Class C, Rye agree with you, and then Class D, Pleasantville stepped up and was like, all right, listen, man, we understand that Bronxville has a great team, but uh our community is better and we will we will win. So and they beat Bronxville this week.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So there you go. So they showed me. So that that's one that I've you know, if I was doing this this week, I would have put Pleasantville number one. Um they came back from a 5-1 deficit in that game, just getting kind of run off the field against Bronxville and this matchup, this pre this preview of the championship. And Pleasantville just found a way. And uh, you know, just uh capitalizing on every turnover, every mistake Bronxville made, and uh momentum is a is a crazy thing, and they go on and win that game 11-8.
SPEAKER_01Tremendous resolve on their part to be able to, you know, you're getting smacked five to one in lacrosse. It's a pretty sizable, you know, significant lead. And then to turn around and then just flip the game on its head the way that they did.
SPEAKER_00Started the season 0-4, obviously, facing you know, Yorktown, Pearl River, Pelham, uh Glassbury, Connecticut, but they've come back and they've won uh nine out of 10. So they're they're rolling. And we said we said about they didn't really have like that marquee win, and beating Byram Hills was kind of that in some ways. And uh Bronxville's now their marquee win.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, definitely their marquee win. Uh and speaking about lacrosse, uh, some news, some news happened last night. My uh my both of my sons, my son who plays for Blindbrook, who is their face-off specialist, um, who played last night, as well as my other son, who here is the one that created the winning moments uh edit showcase that we need your videos for. So keep putting up the edits. Uh right now, I think it is Tappensea Baseball actually had put up an edit and they have like 15,000 views.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03But let's celebrate this young man uh who we all know very well. Tyler Terstein breaks the Section One record last night with 13 points.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so the Section One record is it's he he set the career point record. Um he went into the game yesterday thinking he was probably a couple of games away, maybe two games away from breaking the record, and then he goes and puts up nine goals, four assists, 13 points, gets the record, has his day, and uh pretty incredible. Um it's sort of his emblem it's symbolic for him because he's you know nine goals in a game is just insane. I mean, it's insane. And um against Edgemont, just show just strength and speed, man. That's all it is for him, and that's uh and smarts. I mean, he just finds in all these little cracks and crevices and uh powers his way through and uh is an all-time sexual one points leader. He's the he's the you know the Wayne Gretzky, and that's it. You know, points and goals and assists combined, and it's uh it's a remarkable feat uh considering the number of players, all Americans, professionals, big time Division I players, uh, to stand above them all in terms of of uh statistics is is incredible.
SPEAKER_01Because this has been this has been a a just a gold mine of who's who in lacrosse and our in and this in the nation. We produced some of the greatest players, lacrosse players in the history of our country right here in Hudson Valley. And for this young man to be the all-time point scorer uh of all time in lacrosse is incredible. And once again, we're starting the show at a perfect time. So you look at Hunter Mezzatesta. Yeah, he's the all-time goal uh uh save leader. Yeah, and now we have the all-time point leader. I know. So between basketball and now lacrosse, I mean, it's been a record-breaking year, 2026, in Section 1 athletics across the world.
SPEAKER_00He broke an 11-year-old record set by Henry Grass at Bronxville. Um he had uh he has 411 points, so uh goals and assists. It's pretty incredible.
SPEAKER_03I love that he did it on a goal. I mean, listen.
SPEAKER_00On a great goal.
SPEAKER_03On a great goal. Yeah. On a great goal.
SPEAKER_00Good dodge, got in, power move, went low, left. It was awesome. Great angle, everything.
SPEAKER_03Awesome goal. I mean, listen, again, you're right. We we couldn't start a show at a better time. Between all the record breaking that's happened in basketball, uh, record breaking now in the lacrosse side. There's a ton of records that we didn't cover for that matter, because we didn't even know records we were breaking, uh, track and field. I mean, there's so many things to cover, but congratulations, Tyler. You guys, uh, you and your family deserve it. It's a great thousand point score in basketball.
SPEAKER_01Thousand point score in basketball, and a Williams commit in lacrosse. So he's going to a fantastic institution for academics.
SPEAKER_00He's gonna add to his record. He's got a couple games, obviously, a couple regular season games left off. He's a couple playoff games uh on the year, 48 goals, 16 assists, 245 goals in this career, 166 assists. Unbelievable. Williams is Williams got themselves a steal.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I mean, you're right. He he will add to that record, and then uh we'll see. We'll see if that record is uh is broken within the next 10 years, 15 years, or or how it happens. Forever.
SPEAKER_01Forever. For a lot.
SPEAKER_03It's a lot of things.
SPEAKER_01It's all like Mesites to save, I mean, Mesites is still saving goals. I know, saving, yeah. He's dropping shots. I mean, state playoffs, yeah. It's gonna be interesting to see and if anybody sniffs that record.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. I mean that that that record's insane. I mean, some of these things that we talk about, like 600 strikeouts, you know, that's a record. I mean, it's just it's just it's it's insane. It's amazing. And this is why we do the show. All right, you kids create these amazing winning moments. We get to celebrate them and talk about them here on the show. Uh, and it's fun. I mean, it's it's one of my favorite things I get to do each week and celebrate all you guys. So keep creating these winning moments, and we'll keep talking about them. Let's move to our next segment, uh, Kevin's flag football rankings.
SPEAKER_00Well timed. Obviously, the regular season ends on Saturday. Our show comes out on Sunday, so it'll end yesterday if you're watching. Um, but we're in the final week. Playoffs start this coming week, and um things have sort of fallen into place a little bit. Although as the final couple weeks of the season goes on, people anyone that follows flag football like I have since it started, you realize that most girls are playing flag football, organized flag football, either for the first time in their lives or for the first time in like nine months. Second time. Second time, yeah. So, like this is this is a sport where the progress of the athlete and sort of just like the instincts of the game grows dramatically. So the way you are at the end of the season in every sport, you're better than you were at the start. But there's no comparison to flight football. Like it is, it is like, you know, I I look at some of these quarterbacks that just learn how to throw a spiral um two weeks before starting their first game, you know. So here we are, end of season, and these teams are peaking. The teams that are peaking right now, the ones that are gonna win. So, right now, I I would have been shocked to say anybody other than Scarsdale would be the number one team going into the playoffs, but Arlington has proven it that they're the best team. I mean, they're thirteen one and one, uh biggest win of the year. Obviously, they handed happen to Z their only losses this season. They tied Mamarinick. They did not play Scarsdale in the regular season. So there's no head-to-head matchup there. They've won eight games in a row. They've allowed 31 points total in that span with four shutouts. We've seen defenses get better. Michael Schumacher, the head coach, young head coach, he's done an unbelievable job. And we obviously talked about Jade Triunfo last week, the wide receiver. She was on her honor roll. But Chase Harris, this season, 1,344 yards passing, 22 touchdowns. She's run for 14 touchdowns and over 800 yards. So she has put up over 2,000 yards this season and 36 total touchdowns on the offensive side. I don't know if she's done defense, kicking returns or anything like that, but um Chase Harris has been awesome. And uh this Arlington team is the number one team going into the postseason, and they'll be the number one seed. 2,000 plus yards from scrimmage. Yeah. There's a couple girls in section one that have that. They're in rarefied year. Totally. Um number two team is Memarinick. Head coach Anthony Viddy. He trying to be, he might have, he might be the first coach to ever win section championships in the same school year, in the same sport. Football. He won, he led the Mamonic football team. Yeah, that's something that's never been done. I can tell you I've lived through, I've been old enough to remember the day it started. So um 9192. But um, so he's uh he has his team. They've won six out of seven. The only loss was the Yonkers, uh, a little bit of a letdown game. They had just beaten Scarsdale. Matty Cashman, two touchdowns and a win over Mount Vernon this week. Their four losses have been by seven, one, six, and one. So they've been in all close games, tight games, and just like the Mamarinick football team, they lost close games the regular season, found a way to come back and win the championship. So uh they're gonna try and follow that script. Memarinick is gonna have to basically build a whole new wing to put all these trophies that they won this school year in. Man, I told you, golden generation. It's unreal. It's unreal. Uh, that's number two, and then way down in number three is Scarsdale defending state champions. Tom Newkirk is kind of like he's like the OG of Section One Coaching. He was one of the Scarsdale was all these teams started uh flag football four or five years, I think five years ago. No, I don't know this track of the years. Um he was one of the one of the guys at the at the start of it. Um terrific coach. And uh this team 13 and two, he'd probably tell you they maybe overachieved a little bit. I think they're actually 14, I think they won on Thursday. 14 and 2. Um they lost Tappan Z in the regular season and lost to Amerinick. They um beat American 25-6 last week uh to stop an eight uh to uh eight game winning streak now. Uh Tom Newkirk. This team is he's gonna figure it out. He's won enough big games and um does enough scouting. And you know, I think um Arlington, I think he's gonna like being in the underdog role. I think that's something that's gonna make him feel he's gonna like that with his team being a defending state champion. It's a good way to inspire, it's a good way to inspire to be the underdog side.
SPEAKER_01I I have a question, Kevin and John. Are they going is it the same as every other every other sport where the top C can get two home games? Yes, okay. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So there's only gonna be nine nine teams, but yes, there's no semifinals or at home sites. So this is great.
SPEAKER_03Why don't you walk our audience because flag football is uh is fairly new. Walk them through what what is the playoffs look like here for flag football?
SPEAKER_00Yes, that'd be great. So there's only 10 teams in Class A. Um, Mount Vernon and probably Clarkstown and uh Clarkstown schools are not going to make the playoffs. It's gonna be 18 playoffs. So A plays one, two plays seven, three plays six, five, five, four. Um you'd be surprised how many people don't think that that's how it works. They think highest plays low. So Scarsville will be the one seed. Um Scarsworth and Arlington are vying for the one seed. I think Scarsville's gonna end up edging them um in the end, but we'll see how these uh these numbers play out. And uh they're all in game day one. So follow that.
SPEAKER_03Is it because of points?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, just because they have um they've played uh 12, they're 12 and 2 in section one, um waiting on the result of their game last night, so that might put them at 13 and 2. I think they would have uh beaten Mount Vernon. Okay. Um so there, and I just said I said they had an eight-game winning streak and lost to Marinick 25-6. So that's where I fumbled there before. Um they've won three games in a row, pending the Mount Vernon game. So um, you know, I I think that that loss to America might have been the reset that the team needed. Um, but um, they're a great defensive team, just like all the other top teams in section one in class A. Just like Nourish. Eight teams. So it'll be eight teams, quarterfinals, and then the winners go to the semis, and then they go to the championship. So it looks like Arlington and Scars will be on opposite sides of the bracket. The the the key is gonna be where the seeds fall with Nourashell, because Nourashell and Mamerick, because neither one of them is an easy matchup. No rochell to me, defensively, is decent. He's as good as anybody in the section.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they've been the issue is can they score enough?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's that's the point. Can they put points on the board? Um Scarsville, I think, would rather play um Scarsville's not gonna outscore anybody. They're going to just they'd rather lock into a lower defense. So they probably want No Rochelle than facing the Marinick. When does the seating finalize?
SPEAKER_03When does it come out?
SPEAKER_00Uh Monday.
SPEAKER_03Okay, so Monday, Monday on game day one. Yep. Uh is where you can you can find the seating for all the champ, all the the all three classes. All three classes. Okay, great. So we're actually going to cover the winning moments uh along with game day one. We will be at the flag football section championships. Uh stop by, see our tent, come visit us. We will be covering that uh the same way that we did the boys' basketball championship. And I'm super excited about it. Uh, one because uh girls flag football as a girl dad, I'm I'm I'm loving the growth of this sport. Uh and funny, funny, last week we talked about uh is there gonna be a boys flag football? My uh my son, my son Sebastian, who is uh graduating and going down to college, he's like, Dad, I really wish they had boys flag football when I was when I was playing when I was in col when I was in high school.
SPEAKER_00So uh if there was a boys flag football team at a high school in Westchester and there was a sign-up sheet, there'd be a hundred names on the list.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's a great sport.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's a great sport.
SPEAKER_00It have to be I I I would as a as a as we said, I said it might be at the sacrifice of football.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna say this probably as a former high school football coach, yeah. Um I would prefer that they do the boys in the spring as well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, okay, it's it's for another show. Let's move on now to uh to our class B.
SPEAKER_00So Tappan Z is the front runner, but there's like five or six teams behind them that on any given day uh could beat them. But TZ, deserving of our number one spot. They're 14-1. They will be the number one seed um when the playoffs come out on Monday. Eve Girardi, just fantastic, as we mentioned. So led them to a section championship last year, led them to the state final last year, led the basketball team to a state championship, just a winning player, winning athlete. Listen, she's Rockland County's all-time goal scoring leader in in uh soccer. That's amazing. Um, she's going to obviously this sport is so new, so like records don't really, but she's got to be the all-time leader in uh she has 200 career uh touchdowns. I mean, uh passing, rushing, receiving, everything uh in her career and um back-to-back league championships. And she's also made a couple of uh superstars out of uh Ella Sabatini and Nina Vasquez. They both have 200 career receptions and 2,000 career yards, two receivers. I mean. So it's um you know Carol Flynn has really done an exceptional job uh as the coach of this program and just kind of opening things up and utilizing the athletes that they have just kind of walking the halls in this tape Z High School. It's it's incredible. And uh I texted with him yesterday, I was asking for some some info, and he was with uh he was upstate in Albany celebrating the state championship in the I think I assume they assume the uh in the um capital office and getting a tour and doing that all that. So he's uh then the girls had to run back home and get ready for practice.
SPEAKER_03Did she play as a freshman?
SPEAKER_00Eve Jordi? Yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I mean you just think about that. If you just take take some comparisons of like professional football players and you know, touchdowns and yards, I mean, breaking down 200, 200 career touchdowns and going, it's an average of 50 touchdowns per year. Yeah. I mean rushing.
SPEAKER_00Insane. She's returned interceptions, she's a great defensive player. They they they just uh she's she's special. She really is. And she there's you know, we talked about um obviously Chase Harris and and the the quarterbacks. It's a it's a quarterback sport at the high school level because of the rules. Some people don't love the rules because um my daughter plays uh my seventh and fifth grade daughters play um in a in a league where the quarterback can't run, and that's in the NFL rules. So the NFL wants the sport at the youth level to be more of a passing sport and not a running sport. At high school, you can run every play, and so it's almost like watching Navy play sometimes. And some of these girls are in Navy being obviously they run football, they run the triple option. And that's basically what they do. I mean, look at um Bradley New from Fox Lane's a perfect example. Just give her the ball and go. And she's just you know, she's she's just taking off and running on every play. And um, and she can throw, she's gotten better at throwing the football. Um, but her her greatest asset is her just her elusiveness and her strength as a runner. Um, and that so that's where the sport's a little different at different ages, but um, as long as the sport is that way, Riley New, Eve Girardi, the athletes, the elite athletes in the section, they're gonna thrive. And they both are. So that TZ is my uh number one team in class B. Uh Yorktown, excuse me, this allergies, man. Allergy season has not been fun. It's late too. It's late this season.
SPEAKER_01You're so cold. I'm gonna suggest something for you. Allegra D24, it's what I take. All right. Sponsors of our show now? Yes, they are.
SPEAKER_00Um they should be. Yorktown at 14 and one is uh number two seed. Uh head coach Mike Rosignal. So there's a you know, there's a a lot of Section One football coaches, tackle football coaches who've gone over to the girls' side and love it and have have just found that it's very similar to when they do seven on seven. Obviously, seven on seven um with the boys' teams and the workouts, and um it kind of they feel that they have an advantage. Yorktown's put up huge numbers this season. Uh they did not play Tappense in the regular season. Their loss was 14-12 to Brewster back in early April. So they are on a on a quite a run here. The depth of Yorktown is what makes them so dangerous. Eve Monaco, uh Monaco is very skilled to both sides of the ball, and uh she's led this team to 10 wins in a row. The defense has posted seven shutouts in their tenure. Stout, stout defense. They are they're all over the fields. It is hard to get a first down against this team, let alone score a touchdown. So like the 85 Bears. They are. Yorktown is excellent. And then on the other side of that coin is the team that just puts up so many points, is Mayapack. And when I say about the depth of this, you know, you have Mayapak, you have Fox Lane, you have Brewster, you have Lakeland. They're all double-digit win teams that are just a play away, man. It's anything can happen uh once the playoffs start with the with the talent that these teams have. But Mayapak is number three. They're 12-2-1 in the season. 371 points on the year scored. Maria Garafalo, the quarterback, dynamic playmaker, um, Neve Kelleher, Fiona Kelleher, they they just have so many weapons there. She had three touchdowns, Garafalo had three touchdown passes in the win over Somers. Defense posted a shutout. They're kind of clicking Mayapack. They're clicking at the right time. And uh Fiona and Neve are just excellent defense, has seven shutouts this season overall. They lost at Yorktown, 6-0. So they're right there, lost to Tap and Z, 35-19. So I I want to make a comment on class B.
SPEAKER_01Okay. It's gonna come down to who doesn't make a catastrophic turnover in in at this class. Because whoever makes that catastrophic turnover, that pick six, or that what you know, that bad play where you get put the team in great field position, I think whoever stays away from that will be our section champ.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean it's it's gonna be tight throughout the entire way. TZ is the favorite, but I do think that um it would nothing would shock me with any of these, you know, TZ, Yorktown, Mayapack, Brewster, Lakeland, Fox Lane on the right day, Horace Greeley, also very good team, very good quarterback plays. So uh to me, that this is the this is the deepest class. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01And I and I and and my my concern for Yorktown is their ability to score. Yeah, exactly. Not their defense. No, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_03You got video game numbers that we're looking at here at 371 points score. That's absolutely outrageous. Um so again, you'll get all the seatings. Uh, they'll come live game day one on Monday. We'll of course put them across all the socials, the winning moments, game day one to make sure you guys have that. And uh yeah, we'll see uh if you actually the voting for these things will come out pretty quick, but the voting will be on who actually wins next week in the playoffs. So yeah, you got to show up this time.
SPEAKER_00So if you were impressed by 371 points, you should be really impressed by 477 points. That's how many points Westlake Briarcliff has put up this season. They're undefeated. 15-0 coach you saw, Juju.
SPEAKER_01I ran up Juju on the clip, and Juju ran by everybody. She ran by everybody like they were standing still. Yeah. I cannot believe the burst that she has in the open field. Nobody, forget about touching the flag. Nobody was going, nobody touched her. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It is uh it is remarkable, just uh the athleticism that she has. She had over 300 yards total, passing and rushing in the win over Han Hudd, defending section champions. They they squashed them. I mean, it wasn't even it wasn't even like a game. No. Um they're great defensively, is Westlake. Um, Izzy Murray made made an unreal catch in this game on a pass from De Marinos. So um they're just they're clicking. Um, you know, you feel when a team's undefeated that eventually they're gonna stumble, but they haven't. I'm gonna go watch them today, so it's gonna be after. Uh they're gonna face Byron Hills for the second time, a little cross town rivalry on the road, good preparation for the playoffs. But um, I I think this Westlake team is got something special here. Their closest game was a 12-0 win over Putt Valley. And so when your closest game is a shutout, how close was it really? You know, I mean they are um Anthony Sardo, their head coach, longtime football coach within the program is an assistant coach at Westlake, head coach at Gordon back in the day. So um he's got this team confident and ready to make to make a nice run here.
SPEAKER_01They they've got they're so deep in personnel. Uh, I don't know if there's anybody as deep as near near their depth as far as athleticism in class C. I don't think there is.
SPEAKER_00No, absolutely not. So they're my number one team. I think they're pretty clearly number one. So now after this is where it gets a little bit.
SPEAKER_03But wait a minute. Are we gonna is Westlake I'll crown them now? Is Westlake Miami or is Westlake the New England Patriots who got uh a perfect season until the New York Giants came along and uh took you down here?
SPEAKER_01Well, I think they're more Miami Dolphin-esque.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they they strike me as more Miami Dolphins. I mean, yes. Um partially because I don't think any team behind them is as complete as they are. I mean, there's there's talented teams, there's teams that have um great individual players, but there's not like a true, like a well-put-together team that could, for four quarters, that could play with that. Yeah, I just don't see it. So not at that classic. The pressure's on Westlake, but there's also a lot of proof in what they've done. I mean, they've all the teams behind them, they've beaten pretty handily this season.
SPEAKER_03So coach, you know why you know why Westlake's so good?
SPEAKER_01Because Westlake moms love football. Westlake moms love football. I don't know that now.
SPEAKER_03That is uh something stumping coach is gonna be that's come with some more stuff to figure out to stump the coach.
SPEAKER_00Don't don't even try, man. Don't even try. Don't try to stump the coach. Number two team is I mean, there's really every time I went to go pick my number two team, I found two reasons that I couldn't pick them. I mean, you know, initially I put Bronxville. They're number three. I mean, I was gonna put Han Hudd, but they just got beat up pretty good by Westlake. So I said, all right, let's there's gotta be another team. Um, and I went to Bronxville. Bronxville's just lost for the second time to Dallas Ferry. Um, Dallas Ferry, I went to go put in. They lost to Byram Hills. I'm gonna go Byram Hills as my number two team. Uh, because I think that, you know, you you could judge a team by, you know, okay, they lost to them in their in April. How they're playing right now, I think Byram Hills is probably the team that's probably the next closest to Westlake. Delegonzalez has been awesome at quarterback. She's continued to grow into the position second year as a starter. Um, Emilia Meneto, uh, she's just an elite-level athlete as a freshman, um, uh, obviously a high-level basketball player. She's uh she's a leading scorer two years in a row on the basketball team. She needs you see her in the football field, and just her lateral movement. She's a starter, uh, star player on the soccer team as well. Her lateral movement and quickness and just foot speed is off the charts. And um, you know, she's one of those players that you have to game plan for, specifically when you face Byron Hills. Um, but um Simon Burke, again, another guy, just uh football tackle football coach. And uh now the the girl cycle coach. And you know, he's divide. I think he's he showed a little trick up his sleeve in a in a play call recently to beat Hen Hudd in a late game dramatic, um, I think it was a double reverse pitch down the field pass. Um so he's um he's got some tricks up his sleeve, and he's probably just wants another crack at Westlake some point, probably as late in the season as possible in the playoffs. But they're my number two team.
SPEAKER_01Amelia's got such a quick twitch burst.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Like she off the first step, boom, and then she's gone. And and um that serves her well in all sports, but in particular, flag football to get up the field and it become a problem.
SPEAKER_00Twitch is everything because if you if she catches the ball in space, that twitch is basically 10 yards actually. Absolutely 100%. So that's that's a good way to put it. Um number three, I'm gonna go Bronxville, I guess. Um Bronxville Hen Hud and uh Dobbs and Putt Valley were all kind of tied. Right. Tied for my third spot. But I'm gonna go with Bronxville. I'll give Patsy Magnelli. So Patsy Magnelli is the head coach of Bronxville, he's trying to join Anthony Viddy as a guy who won a now he won a state championship as a in the fall as a co as a tackle football coach, trying to win a section here uh with Bronxville. But uh listen, tough uh tough road ahead with uh with Westlake standing in the way.
SPEAKER_01They're so good right now, they're a different place.
SPEAKER_03Listen, uh if Westlake makes it uh the way that you guys predict, and they are at the finals, uh I'm calling out all you Westlake moms. I expect you guys to show up in force.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you don't have to worry about that. Thornwood and Hawthorne will be there in in and droves, absolutely.
SPEAKER_03Listen, I know I know I've I have a dear friend of mine. I played basketball with Dan Legaza, who was uh a proud Westlake dad uh from his son being the starting quarterback and a great basketball player. And uh he knows, like he talks about Westlake as the football town. It is the football town in Westchester. They're very proud of it, and uh I look forward to seeing the Westlake moms come out in full force. So good luck to you girls uh next week, and uh yeah, we'll see you at the championship. I'm very excited to cover this this championship. Yeah, it's a week or the other championships.
SPEAKER_00It's kind of its own stands alone. It's obviously a shorter playoffs the regular season. Which is great. Yeah, it's uh it's it's awesome. Awesome time. It's it's a great event. Three games in a day at Lakeland High School. It's uh it's a fun back to back to back.
SPEAKER_03Yep, I know it's Memorial Day weekend, but come out in droves here, celebrate these young girls. Uh, this sport is obviously not going anywhere. And uh man, some of these numbers are just just insane. So moving right along to our our next. Oh, before we move to this segment here, we got to talk about Shane Riley from Ketchum Baseball, was the fan favorite winner of our honor roll from last week. So congratulations uh to Shane. And and as you mentioned, the catchem baseball team is just continuing to move on.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you know, I I said memoric in the regular season in the preseason, they were my favorite to uh win and catch them as the three-time defending section champions with five guys back in their lineup, maybe the best pitcher in the section. Kind of uh they've overlooked them, but they're 16-2 on the year, and Shane Riley has continued to rake, and he is uh in the middle of this lineup, and this catch them team just so confident. They just beat Fox Lane 6-0 on uh what was it on Wednesday? They finished their season up, Clarksdown South, and then Fox Lane again. So they've uh you know they got some momentum on their side right now. Their only losses this season was a two-run loss to Arlington in the game they I think they led five or four-nothing. Um and they lost four two to Mamerick in the first couple weeks of the season. So they're hoping for a rematch, but they're looking at easily the number one seed. Number one seed in in section one in baseball is such a huge advantage. Um you know, less licks, obviously, but just getting the home games, um, getting all they have to do now is just get to um the semifinals. Because once you get to the semifinals, you have to get beat twice. And beating catch them once is hard enough. Beating catch them twice is gonna be almost impossible.
SPEAKER_01And and it's not an easy uh trip to go all the way up there and be in front of, and they're gonna bring a crowd now. They're gonna bring anywhere from you know three to four hundred, five hundred people, if not more, depending on the time of that game, up at catchment, catch them. And that will be a very difficult place for anybody to get out of with a W.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's it's it's pretty incredible. Those seatings, Kevin, when do they come out?
SPEAKER_00Not until next week. Yeah. So the last day of the regular season is uh so I think I think it's like Tuesday or Wednesday. No, it's actually like middle of next week. Okay. And I look up the date.
SPEAKER_03So, yes, for the seatings of all the sports, make sure you visit game day one. It is the leader in all scores, standings, seatings, your bracketology, which has some controversy from last time. Uh so it is not done manually, uh, it is done by the computer, so don't beat us up.
SPEAKER_00I love when people write to me, they'll like text me or they'll call me, they'll be like, hey, how is this possible? And I say it's possible by math. There's a formula involved. I still don't. I I wish they would have. How is it possible that we're behind this team? We beat them, and I'm like, bonus points. Math power points.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we actually uh I've seen behind the scenes that algorithm. Uh we use an abacus and uh to to do the math. So they do again. It's all good.
SPEAKER_01I know what an abacus is, by the way.
SPEAKER_03We know you do, coach. We know you do. Considering we're gonna be back in the day. Yeah, it was invented when you were born. Uh all right, moving right along to what has become our fastest going favorite segment here is our uh top ten, top ten on a roll. Uh, which uh it's I mean it's so hard to pick the top ten these days, uh, with all these these great sports and great Players that are that are being submitted. But let's uh let's kick this one off here with you, Kevin. Uh Abby Gould.
SPEAKER_00Abby Gould from Nyack Girls Across, biggest goal of the season. She scored the game winner to beat Rye in that highly anticipated matchup, the regular season, the rematch of last year's championship in Class C. They went on to win a state championship. Nyack now in class B. They were not going to play each other in the regular season. Abby Gould goes out, she scores four goals. All American players, they win 13-12 over Rye on the road. And um, you know, again, it's just the schedule that Nyack's playing, they're facing the top teams anywhere they can find them in the in the tri-state, whether it's Darien, Connecticut, whether it's Rye challenging themselves, getting better. And Abby's continued to just play her best uh sophomore attacker, uh, just uh special, special player. It'll be interesting.
SPEAKER_01It'll be interesting to see how her recruitment goes. And yeah, I'm sure she will have a list of the top women's lacrosse college programs all over her in the next couple of years.
SPEAKER_03I mean, it's well deserved. I mean, she's a sophomore.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely.
SPEAKER_03All right, so let's move uh let's move over the bridge, Coach, where you use that plasti thingy to get back, as you mentioned. You have to come back across. Luke Cunningham from Brewster High School.
SPEAKER_01Brewster High School, Luke Cunningham led Brewster back from an 8-3 deficit versus Nyak, tied a game with a minute two left, scored the game winner with five seconds remaining, finished with three goals, four assists, added one goal, four assists early in the week versus Wappingers. Um, obviously, if Luke continues to play at the level that he's playing, uh for particularly for Brewster to come back the way that they did, uh it bodes well for them in the postseason. And uh Luke needs to continue to put up those kind of numbers.
SPEAKER_00Brewster kind of slipped into the number three spot, the nine and four in the season, number three, and uh behind obviously Yorktown and Greeley, and you know, getting a chance to maybe go play in the semifinals if they can uh win their first round matchup. But uh they've won three games in a row. Winning those uh matchups is is solid, and they have uh they have three games left, all winnable for them.
SPEAKER_01And that and that will springboard them into the postseason.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, coming into the postseason, you need the comp especially you need the confidence. In these sports, you need the confidence, you need the rhythm. Uh sports is all about confidence and rhythm. And uh this young lady has a lot of confidence and rhythm. Uh Paige Hodel from uh Ketchum High School.
SPEAKER_00RC Ketchum on the on the softball side, and we talked so much about their baseball team. Uh Ketchum, you know, started the season with a couple losses south and losing the clock sound south to Arlington, and they've been on a tear since. They had their winning streak snapped. They had won 10 games in a row, lost to North Rock on 4-0. But Paige has carried this offense most of the way. Four home runs, 15 RBIs in the last three games. Unbelievable. Um, two homers and five RBIs against Brewster, two and five against um Saratoga, two RBIs against Shen. They've obviously faced some uh out of out-of-section competition in that stretch. Um, continue to just light it up, and the pitching's been great. They haven't they went three shutouts in a row, and they've uh they've they've positioned themselves right with White Plains in North Rockland to be in the mix with Clarksdown South and Arlington. It's going to be a fight to get those home games and in the playoffs and not have to face more than two of them uh to get to and win a section championship. But I think when the playoffs start, you know, catch them has just as good of a chance and a stake to be the best team in this in class triple A as North Rock and White Plains do, and they have the pitching also. Amazing.
SPEAKER_01Uh I mean, four home runs of 15 RBIs in three games. You're you're smacking the you're smacking that softball all around the park or out of the park.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Oh, coach, she would she would definitely hit first pitch home run off you. First pitch home run, no doubt about it.
SPEAKER_01I throw my 12 to 6 breaking ball, it'd be tough for her to hit that.
SPEAKER_03Moving right along, coach. We uh we're we're coming back over the we're saying here in Westchester County, Yorktown High School, Brandon Manche.
SPEAKER_01Brandon Manchester is this these numbers are like being in little league back in the day. You know, you're the 12-year-old stud in a on the little field. Brandon Manchess, Yorktown has won all of a sudden nine of their last 10 games. He's 10 for 13 over the last five games. Six RBIs, four runs, scored five walks, reached base four times versus Fox Lane. If this kid continues to hit the ball the way that he does, Yorktown has every chance to get it done and win a section championship in baseball.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, double A is wide open. And this is a team of Yorktown that started the season, but they started 0-5? What was it? I forget. But they started they started they started poorly uh for a team that had some pretty high hopes coming into the season. And um now they're 10 and 7, they're they're moving their way up to number four seed in uh latest bracketology standings. So they're right there, and they they face as tough as schedules any team in class double A. Double A obviously has loaded some some really talented teams, Mayapek at the top, but man, they they they sort of have the the ingredients to be that team that when they win this, they can play for or win a section championship, and you'll say, Well, remember back when they were they started they started the season one and six. Wow. Six, yeah. One and six. So here they are. Didn't give up.
SPEAKER_01No, uh doesn't matter how you start, it matters how you finish. And and and I want to say this there are some baseball teams in our area that are not great in cold weather.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm and I'm I'm being honest. Yeah. And the warmer the weather gets, the warmer the bats get, the warmer the, you know, they're they're they get more in rhythm because the weather is nicer. And it appears Yorktown might be one of those teams that as the weather's gotten warmer, bats have gotten warmer and and they and they're starting to hit their stride.
SPEAKER_00They have a chance. They have two more games against Greeley left. So they play Saturday and Monday. So they split those, sweep those, wherever they're gonna. They're the hottest team in the section right now. So um they can move up to a top two seed. Rye moved into number one this week with Doris Greeley losing. Uh, Mayapac's now tie with Horace Greeley at number two. So this it's really tight for those uh those three teams.
SPEAKER_03I'm just glad when Coach did the introduction, he wasn't talking about uh like Bronx Little League, where you know the 13 or 14-year-old uh player would come on board with the birth certificate that qualified time championship. Yeah, thanks, Coach. Thanks for not bringing that part up. But uh now, uh let's move right back to you, Kevin. Uh Cormore, Fox Lane High School.
SPEAKER_00All right, Coromore, Fox Lane, three goals, three assists, six stroll controls against Brewster, uh, two undercareer points for Coromore, uh multi-sports star as well. Senior midfielder, she's gonna play at Jacksonville. Uh coach, what is Jacksonville's uh Dolphins. Dolphins, I think it was gonna be a good one. They had a guy named.
SPEAKER_01They had a guy named Arthur Skillmore and Pembroke Burroughs. Batman and Robin took that team to the national championship in the early 70s, loss to UCLA. Go ahead now, Kevin.
SPEAKER_00All right, premier all-around midfielders in section one. Cormore is uh she has Fox Lane kind of uh in position. They were uh, you know, some some tough losses. Obviously in Class B, Nyack is is still there, but them Fox Lane, Brewster, Manpack, Your Town, they're all kind of like just like kind of lurking there behind uh Nyak. And who's gonna be the one that has a chance to uh to compete uh for a section championship?
SPEAKER_03That's why we play these games.
SPEAKER_01And because of the fact that she's a draw control person, you know, player, she can control that game along with her skill, um, with you know, her skills in the midfield. That's a young lady that if she gets hot in a game, she can shock the world by her by her performance and carry a team in the playoff. Shock the world. Big, big, big, big, big. I like it. I like it. Draw control is everything.
SPEAKER_03Well, listen, coach, let's come back to you with Bill Haggerty from my own prep.
SPEAKER_01Speaking of uh uh lacrosse, Bill Haggerty, I own a prep lacrosse, 13 goals, three assists in three games, 16 total points, five goals, one assist versus Cardinal Hayes, four goals versus Fairfield Ludlow, traditional power-up in Connecticut, four goals, one assist against Silesianum from uh Delaware, yeah. Silesianum from Delaware. Normally Delaware, pretty good lacrosse. Thank you for the uh help with that pronunciation, Kevin. And um John, like I said, I mean, two of those three teams, outstanding traditional powerhouses. For Billy to do that, uh bodes well for them to get ready to, I believe, defend their city and state championships.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you know, and uh high point lacrosse commit, and I own a prep who did not like losing their number one ranking in Loha to Memarinik, and they had something to say about it on uh Mexican week. They did not like that. And uh so now they're gonna try and earn it back. Uh, but uh um Haggerty's awesome.
SPEAKER_01And he's going to a great university. High Point University is fantastic there in North Carolina, known known also for the being the furniture capital of the world, but now more so for being High Point University, the home of their program and their college.
SPEAKER_03Rated the number one campus campus right now. Fantastic place. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00All these so it's funny because like Paige Hodel, we didn't mention before, she's going to display St. John's. These are like high-level the highest level athletes in the in the area in their sport.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Well, listen, that's how you get that's how you get to this list. It's top 10 list. It's all about it's all about what you do uh week by week. And uh now, speaking about this next end lady, Kevin, Tara Murphy, North Rockland High School.
SPEAKER_00North Rockland softball, Tara Murphy. Complete game shutout in their win over catch them for the League E Championship. So we talked about obviously Paige, but she shut down that offense, including Paige. Um Murphy went three for four with an RBI in the title clinching win and uh three for three against John Jay's Fishgill. Shutout performances with seven strikeouts in that win over John Jay. North Rockland is uh playing well. I mean, they they are they're clicking. They have they're 11-3 in the season now, 10-3 in the section, and uh they have taken down some of the top teams in the section in the last couple weeks. They just um, as you said, four-nothing win over Ketchum, two-nothing win over John J. Fishgill. Their loss was to Yorktown during this uh stretch, but they're a team that's also gonna just keep getting better and uh have a chance to compete for another section championship.
SPEAKER_01And Tara Murphy continues to hit the softball the way she's hitting it, plus her ability to pitch as that dual threat. Um, it'll be very tough out in the uh in the section one playoffs.
SPEAKER_03I mean, listen, shut out, seven strikeouts.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and then and then six for seven back-to-back games. Absolutely crazy.
SPEAKER_03Great, great week for her. And uh, coach, we're gonna keep you in Westchester since uh I guess right now we don't uh you're not you're not that popular in Rockland.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm not all of a sudden.
SPEAKER_03Right, it's the Plasty thing. We're gonna go with Luke Lucas London.
SPEAKER_01Lucas London because Rye is Rye, as we all know. Rye is Rye in Lucas London. Walk off RBI single to beat arch rival Harrison, six to five in eight dramatic innings, drove in two runs in a win versus Eastchester, reached base three times versus Mayapack, and he's second on the on Rye in hits this season. A very form formidable offense, uh, and very um, very uh absolutely explosive offense at times, yeah. And um prolific at times. That's the word I was looking for. Yeah. After I couldn't say to school from Delaware, I couldn't pronounce the name. I could I could pronounce prolific. But uh Lucas London having a great week this week.
SPEAKER_00Rice won five in a row. They've moved back into the number one spot in class double A. Obviously, they won class A last year in section one for the championship, won at the state final four. Um they lost three games in a row, lost to Fox Lane uh twice, lost to Suffort, and they've rebounded with five straight wins. So they're moving the right direction. They have Harrison to close out their regular season and try and get to 15 and five on the regular season. But uh, you know, poor Harrison, man. Harrison has been right there in so many, they have so many close losses this season, including taking maybe the the favorite in in class double A down to extra innings. They're they're four and fourteen of the season, danger of not making the playoffs. I think when they're scheduled, they have a they have a chance to get enough bonus points to get in, if not, if not already. But man, it's been um they're they're gonna be a tough out, Harrison, in the playoffs.
SPEAKER_01And that's and that's a dangerous team that's that's taking everybody to the limit. And then you that's the last team you want to see, even if they're coming into your in into your in your ballpark. That's the last team you want to see. A Harrison team has probably lost what, Kevin, five or six games. Yeah, it's been close in brutal fashion.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they actually are they so you need 28 points. Um, so your wins count as four points and plus your bonus points. You need 28 points to get into the baseball playoffs. Um, right now they're at 24, so they might have to beat Rye in this final game to do that. So we'll know, and they might be waiting on some bonus points as well. But yeah, it's gonna be they're gonna be tough. So they they could be probably the 13th team in the playoffs, the final seed. Actually, final seed would be 14 because uh developmentally, but um, yeah, they're gonna be dangerous. No, none of these teams in class double A. I don't think I would say all of them have a chance to win the section championship, but all of them have a chance to win a first round game.
SPEAKER_01And from one to fourteen. John and Kevin, like I told you, that's I don't want Harrison coming into my ballpark. No, no, that's the first round.
SPEAKER_03Every time Kevin talks about bonus points, it brings back uh traumatic experiences from uh being in the basketball gyms. Hey, how do this bonus point stuff work? What's up with these bonus points? Why do they get more bonus points? Uh speak to Kevin Devaney Jr. He'll give you a better update than I could. Just throws it all on you, Kevin. To the expert, I bring it to I bring it to the expert, uh, which I'm gonna throw it back to Kevin right now. Uh for uh Ava Papillero.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So Ava Papillero, um, she had a huge week. Hall of Fame tournament MVP uh when Erson traveled up to the Mudville tournament this past weekend. Uh two homers, a double, five RBIs against Boston Spa, and then uh was huge in their in their in their run. And I had a double and RBI against Never Shell. And uh Ava is you know, we talk about Eastchester a lot and how good how well they've played. They're sitting atop the standings, they they already beat Urslin, but I would be very scared of Ursul. Um, because you know, as good as Eastchester is, Ursulin, uh you know, Papillero's gonna play at University of Virginia. So she's as good as they come, and maybe one of the best individual players in the section. Um, if on the right day, Ursulin is as good and if not better than anyone. They beat they beat White Plains. So it goes to show you how dangerous it is.
SPEAKER_01And for them to go upstate and play, that's a very prestigious tournament in our state. For them to go up there and win that can really springboard them into doing something very special the rest of the year.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, you need that. You need that kind of we always talk about it. The confidence at the end of the season, the rhythm, it uh it kind of brings you to that championship style. So let's uh let's round the top ten here, uh, coach, with uh Drew Caram from North Salem High School.
SPEAKER_01Drew Caram, North Salem High School, seven goals, two assists, and an overtime win over Albertus Magnus. Scored the walk-off overtime winner, and then he added two goals and one assist early in the week versus Clarkstown North. And of course, anytime that you have a kid that can put the ball in the back of the net, um he he obviously gives North Salem an opportunity to make some noise in postseason, at least possibly, if they're going to qualify, at least possibly get a first round win, and then you never know from there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they have a long way to go to qualifying. But yeah, they have a uh they have games left, they have a chance to to maybe try and pull some things off. But this is uh this is one of those things, like, you know, uh Drew Caramba, it's just just an emotional day and a and a win for uh for North Salem, so it's good to see uh see that.
SPEAKER_01And and and any time that you have, you know, when you have an overtime winner in any sport, for you to go over there and and get that walk-off, yeah, that walk-off goal.
SPEAKER_00We had a bunch of them this past week. A lot of them boys and girls across, a lot of overtime games.
SPEAKER_01You know, obviously they have not had some of the success team-wise, for him to have that and have that memory is fantastic.
SPEAKER_03Tis the season. Uh, so that's our top ten. Please keep submitting your highlights. You can text highlights to 88500, or you can submit them at thewinnymoments.com or put them to us on Instagram. I do want to make a note that we get these in. We try to put them all together. Uh, some honorable mentions. You know, we talked about Tyler Terrasteen here in the show. Tyler broke that record late last night, so uh he can't make the top 10 in our honorable week. And also a great play that we saw last night that was brought to us by Anthony Figuera, who had a uh Grand Slam, Grand Slam all the time. Two home runs. Two home runs Grand Slam. Uh you can find all of those moments on the winning moments Instagram, uh, as well as game day one. We'll put them up there.
SPEAKER_00Um we talked about my son being his birthday today. Yeah. And it's probably my favorite memory, not just the day he was born. Obviously, he's my third kid, so all three of them. They all remember our kids being born, right? It's the greatest thing in the world. Absolutely. Your third kid, it's so like they get dragged to everything, right? Um, but I'll never forget my wife Donna went to work that day. She pitched seven periods of softball at nine months pregnant. Um she comes home, her water breaks, but she had put together this whole senior day at Byram Hill softball on her best friend's daughters on the team. So she put together like this balloons and all this stuff. She proceeds to walk, drives herself to the game, um, walks down, if you know Byram Hills, down the hill and then drops off. Somebody along the way said to her, Hey, uh, Donna, what do you do? And she goes, Uh, I actually my water broke about uh 30 minutes ago. I'm gonna go to the hospital. And I remember that she goes, she goes, Dad, it was um Tony Malone. He he he could not have run away faster. He was like, I don't want anything to do with this, uh delivering a baby. And she drops it off, and then we got in the car and she drove to the hospital. So that's where women are so much so much better than men. They're built different. And then she gave me a son, which is even the greatest uh best thing. The best. And we went, and of course, Dylan Devaney is how old today? He turns nine today.
SPEAKER_01One more year of single digits.
SPEAKER_03I know. I will tell you though, you think about that, like, okay, she she's clearly a third child, she's a pro. Uh water breaks. I'm not rushing to the hospital. I got commitments to make. I'm gonna I'm gonna handle these balloons and this stuff for her, and then I'm gonna drive myself to when did she call you?
SPEAKER_00She so I actually, the craziest thing is that I was on my way to Connecticut for to cover baseball. I was working at MSG varsity news 12, and I was on my way to um Connecticut to cover a game at Staples High School. And the pitcher that I was going, I'd finally worked at a day where I was gonna go see him pitch. Um, he now pitches for the Dodgers. I'm blanking on his name. He he's uh reliever for the Dodgers, he's he's awesome. Um, and uh I remember telling my she calls me and I'm like, what's up? She's like, You need to come home. My water just broke. And I was like, I guess I'm never gonna see this kid pitch. And now he's on the Dodgers. So it worked out just fine.
SPEAKER_01And for her to walk down the hill at Byram, because that's a long, I mean, after everything that took place, another incredible thing.
SPEAKER_00Ben Kasparis was the pitcher. He pitches the reliever for the world champion Dodgers. Um, I think he might have recorded one of the final last either of the playoffs last year. And uh I always think every time I see Ben Kasparis, I think to myself, yep, he made the majors. He can sling it. My son was born. I never got to see him pitch in high school, but uh good for Ben. That's a great story, Kevin.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, what an incredible story. I cannot believe that she actually walked down that hill uh after breaking the water. Uh happy birthday, Dylan.
