Danielle sent me a text. There was a nice very little update earlier today. Said, hey, everyone's alive, no one's done anything stupid yet. Perfect. Perfect. So good stuff. Yeah. All right. So we're gonna get right into it here. Um big day today. It's a big day today. Yeah. June 17th. Um, that's the day we're recording this. So when you listen to us, it won't be June 17th, it'll be a couple days later. But June 17th um is a huge day in American history. And um I'm I'm sure everybody right now listening is like, yeah, obviously 1994, June 17th. Um, the OJ Simpson, um, you wouldn't call it high speed police chase, you call it low speed police chase. Exactly. But um that's the day. That is a big day in American history for all you young bucks out there. If you don't know that, I would Google it right now, but you're gonna learn a lot today from us. We're gonna go through that day because it's one of the greatest uh sporting days ever, I think. It gets overlooked. It gets very overlooked. There's a lot, there's a couple things that happened that day that's crazy that it was actually overlooked. So I don't know, do you do we want to just list all the things that happened and then kind of break and talk about each one a little bit?

So the day started with OJ Simpson uh being um they got a warrant for his arrest for the killing of um Nicole Brown Simpson, his ex-wife, right? Yep, yeah, yeah, yeah. But which I don't know, I probably should have checked that at the time. I would assume it's his ex-wife, right?

And then Ron Goldman. I don't know. I we should look that up right now. Um but uh it was his wife or ex-wife, and then a waiter, um, Ron Goleman. And it went on for a couple weeks or whatnot, trying to figure it out, and then on June 17th, they they have the warrant for OJ's arrest, and he is supposed to turn himself in. I think it was like 11 30 in the morning or eleven o'clock in the morning or something like that.

Let's see. It yeah, it was definitely it was it early? Because it must have it went into the night though. Oh no, wait, yeah, but this is this is West Coast time, yeah. It's West Coast time.

So the original time, West Coast time, was 11 a.m. that he had had to or oh, actually, I don't know. Maybe because when I the what I was watching was now confused if it's East Coast, West Coast. Whatever. Eleven a.m. he's supposed to he's supposed to turn himself in. Right. And by 11.45, they do a press conference and say he's missing, we can't find him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um while this is going on, we have these crazy things that's happening. So one of them is the Stanley Cup parade in New York City. So the Rangers had just won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 54 years. The last time they won a cup was 1940. They haven't won a cup since, and their parade was happening. So that's one thing that was going on.

And that was 94. I remember when that happened, too. I was in Hampton Beach when that happened.

That was Mark Messier. Yeah, he said it. He uh he said, We're gonna win this thing. And uh so the Rangers win the cup, they have their parade that day, June 17th. In New York at the same time, the Knicks are playing the Houston Rockets in the NBA finals.

Game five, yes. And at the time they had not won a um the finals. This is this year that they won was the first time in forever, since 73 or 76 or something. Something like that. Yep, yep. And what I didn't know is the Knicks win that game that night on OJ Day, and they go up 3-2 in that series and then lose the next two games in Houston.

So that's just two things. Then you have the World Cup, which is perfect because the World Cup is going on right now, the opening ceremonies of the World Cup, and Bill Clinton is speaking in the middle of a football field, talking to everybody on what's going on. Brazil ends up winning the World Cup that year. Um, and then finally, which is probably the most overshadowed thing because of the O.J. Simpson, I mean, the NBA finals is huge, the parade is huge, the World Cup is huge, but Arnold Palmer plays his final round at the US Open. And I mean, Arnold Palmer, again, for our young lads who are listening. It's not a lemonade. It's not a lemonade. I mean, he's he is the guy that, but um I mean, he is the Mount Rushmore of golf. I mean, it's him, it's Nicholas, and it's Tiger, probably, in whatever order you want to put it in. I don't think anyone would argue that those would be the top three guys. Yeah, I would say, right. Again, this is Joe could button. Thanks, Joe. Joe's not here. Nothing. So, and that is probably I would think, in my opinion, the most that was the most overshadowed thing. So it would basically be like Tiger Woods playing, knowing that there was his final match of all time. Right. You know, it's Michael Jordan playing his final game. Right. Like that's what it is.

They were playing uh the Kansas City Royals, and David Cohn was pitching. No kidding. And during that broadcast, they were talking about the OJ Simpson. It's it was it's everywhere. You can't really unless like I was obviously in seventh grade, but still I remember it. It's one of those crazy, crazy events. The whole the whole OJ Simpson from beginning to end was something, it was a phenomenal like Karen Reed on steroids.

Karen Reed exploded because of more of like the social media stuff I would carried a little bit more because you could follow it so much. Right. Like this was you were coming home and watching the news to see what was going on with O.J. Simpson. Right. Yeah, I don't even know what the cell phone's in 94. I mean that. No, that's seventh grade. I don't I think I got a cell phone when I was a freshman in high school or eighth grade, maybe. It was like a not I got a cell phone, it's like a family cell phone that was in the house. But there was no checking online. There was no, you know. It wasn't, yeah.

Actually, 94, if I can think back to that with cell phones. I had a mine was like a bag, and it had it was like a black briefcase. Yeah. It had like a phone in it. You had to like unzip it and fold it up. You would carry that around? Oh yeah. It was like the coolest thing. I mean, it literally is like a satchel. I think seventh grade I had the beeper.

Yeah. But I mean, think about it. So, as crazy as the OJ Simpson Simpson thing was, that was without any sort of social media. So it's basically thinking about the Karen Reed trial, waiting to get home to watch the local news to figure out what's going on. Because you can't log in online, you can't check anything, you can't watch the court live with a spinning fan.

Well, you guys, I mean, you go on way too long and you just talk about stupid shit. So we're gonna try to stay. But we love our fans. Yeah, we love them. Yeah. More and more every day. We're handing out stickers at graduation parties. It's fine. It's fine. No one listens to a full episode, they just listen to clips. So I was trying to so we have good clips, I guess.

Yeah, it's fine. Um all right, so getting back to it. It was the child charges were filed that morning, and he was supposed to turn himself in around, like I said, around like 11 a.m. And then they can't find him.

So this is all before the trial, yeah. All before that stuff. Hey, you gotta come down to the station, we need to talk to you. Yes, and he's like, see you later.

They got the warrant for his arrest, and because he was he was cooperative at the beginning, and then like they were saying how depressed he was, and they were watching him, and he's doing this thing and that thing, and the next thing you know, you know, they get they get the information because it's basically his blood is all over the scene of the crime, yeah. Uh his DNA, and they get it, and now they can't find him. And they do a press conference announcing that they can't find him. So now the media I saw clip, I was watching some clips today, doing a little research. Um, and the clips of the media, I mean, it was thousands upon thousands of people around his house, around the police station. Remember the helicopters and everything? Over 20, over 20 news helicopters, they said 20 news helicopters. Like, how do you even have that many? It's insane. Right. Um so, like I said, ESPN was talking about it throughout the day, and then NBC, so they have the US Open going on, and it's it's Arnold Palmer's final round, and they're cutting out of ESPN to talk about because this isn't just Karen Reed was just a news story.

I mean, this guy, when you look at him, it's kind of crazy that it's all it's not crazy because he killed somebody, allegedly. Um there it is. He was a Hall of Famer, people loved him, he was in movies. Older generations loved him, right? Like he we missed him. For all you young people out there, you guys don't know, he was a running back in the NFL, right? OJ Simpson, uh Buffalo Bills played for the Bills for years. I doubt he ever won. No, he definitely didn't win a Super Bowl then.

Um, because he played for the Bills, but he had he has I had something, uh I don't know where I put it, but he went to college too, but he was big in college, I think, even. So like he was the f he's the first, he's the only guy to ever run for 2,000 yards in 14 games. That's like his big stat. Oh, no kidding. Wow. Yeah. So I mean he was he was he was very running back, too. But he was but he was also not only was he good at like it's just like anyone else, they're really good at a sport that's great, but he was like loved. He was in movies and TV shows, and he was on the uh you know the the NFL like lineup before for games. He was doing uh play not play by play, the uh color guy.

Like, everyone knows even if you weren't a football fan at that time. In the 80s, you knew who O.J. Simpson was. Right. And yeah, his stats are uh he remains the only player in NFL history to rush for 2,000 yards in a 14-game season. Um Were there only 14 games back then? When he was playing, yeah. Yeah, yeah. So he was in he was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 1985. So that just shows that you know he was playing in the in the early 70s, late uh early 70s into the only comment about the Football Hall of Fame is I feel like they led everybody into that thing. Yeah. No, that's I think at that time though, yeah. There's a guy that completely deserved it. Um he led the NFL in rushing four times 72, 73, 75, 76. He's the NFL MVP in 73. Um, yeah, I mean he was he was unbelievable. He was unbelievable. And like we said, and he was also very, very, very popular. Um where did he go to college? What's your guess?

Um, so now there's all these reports that he's gonna turn himself in. Um, so everybody huddles around the police station. He doesn't turn himself in. There's reporters out there like we haven't seen him, but maybe he went in the back, but I doubt he could, and they like then scan the area. Like, how could he possibly sneak into this place? Yeah, yeah. Um and Robert Kardashian. So Robert Kardashian. Oh, this is the cards, yeah. The Kardashian's father of the like Kim Kardashian's.

And this is where they made their money, too. This has got to be where the money came from. Well, not from OJ, but like he's a famous lawyer.

He's a famous lawyer, and you know when they got divorced, her the the the Kardashian mother with him, I'm sure she got to got a good starting point with everything. But he was Robert Kardashian was one of OJ Simpson's very good friends. He read a suicide note at a press conference that day in the middle of the day. So they were basic he was basically admitting that he was going to kill himself, O.J. Simpson. So Robert Kardashian gets to a press conference later in the day, early afternoon, says, I just got this note. This note was left to me from OJ, and he reads it, and it's it's a suicide note. So now everyone thinks they're gonna he's gonna kill himself. Um now the white Bronco comes into play. It's his buddy AC, I forget his last name, but it was AC something, not Slater. And he's driving it and he calls the police. So now they have they have the recording of him talking to the police, and he's like, OJ's, I have OJ, he's there, he's not in good place. He has a gun to his head, he just wants to say he wants to talk to his mom. Oh, okay. Just wants to talk to his mom. And there's a clip of like nine police cars following me on the freeway. Oh, I remember that completely shut down, and then the helicopters all hovering over him. They're like, please keep the police back. We just wants to talk to his mom. And now they have a cop on the phone with him, basically like a suicide guy, like trying to talk him off the ledge, sort of thing. And they just keep telling him, throw the gun out the window, throw the gun out the window, and he and he won't. And he's like, I'm not doing it. And then he'll hang up, and they go, but it just goes back and forth. Right.

Um and the streets were lined with people. Remember, like the highway, all the overpasses and everything.

Like, all I don't know if people were shooting for him or what? I think they they were chairing for him. Yeah, there was like I was watching clips today, they're chairing for him. Yeah, I remember that. The juice is loose. AC Cowlings was his. So he's driving the white van. Yep. And OJ's supposedly in the back with a gun to his head, saying he's gonna kill himself, and that you know, I've already said the the guy's like, you know, you don't want to do this, you have kids. He's like, I already said bye to my kids. He's going through this whole thing. I just want to, I just want to talk to my mother. So then he gets to his house, and the the the Bronco pulls up to the house. This is like 8 o'clock, 7.30, something like that. He eventually gets out of the van at like 9:30. The Bronco at 9.30, but he's outside his house for a little while. Everyone's surrounding, they're still telling him, throw the gun out the window, throw the gun out the window, throw the gun out the window. They're cutting into the NBA finals game with this thing going on. So, like, they Bob Costas is doing the NBA Finals game, and they're cutting into it, and it's going right to like Peter Jennings, and then halftime is just them talking about what's going on with OJ Simpson. It's it's game five of the NBA Finals, and they just keep cutting in and out of it, and it's insane. It's absolutely insane. And then the baseball games that are going on that night just keep referencing OJ Simpson. Yeah, right. And they announced on one of them like, hey, OJ Simpson just uh they just read a suicide note, I guess, for him. I don't know. I guess he's gonna kill himself. And they're making jokes about it.

It's it was crazy. Uh huh. In the press conference with uh Pat Riley was the coach of the um of the Knicks at the time. Yeah, and after the game was over, they said that they a guy went in there and said something like, Um, coach, do you think if OJ if OJ sliced the left side would it would have been different or something? Like some like stupid joke, and he's kind of looking like what's going on and you hit somebody in the back, like, get up, get that guy out of here. Get that guy out of here. But everything, it was like a everything was like a joke about him.

Yeah, that's kind of weird. Um, but they must have all been friends with him, too, right? I mean, I would imagine that's the one. Well, he worked for NBC. Yeah, I must have known him, right? Uh Al Michaels must have known him. I mean, all have to have been friends with them.

They worked for NBC, and if you remember, that was the thing with Norm McDonald. So Norm McDonald was on Saturday Live at the time and was fired because of his OJ jokes. Oh, okay. So he did weekend update. So he would do the weekend update and he would say an OJ joke. Yeah, yeah. And it killed every time. The the guy, I'll look it up and get his real the his name, but the uh president of NBC was best friends with OJ Simpson. Oh and he it came down like he needs to stop. So they would tell him, hey, Norm, you can't uh you can't do the OJ jokes. So he during during rehearsal, they wouldn't do an OJ joke, yeah. And then they go live and you do an OJ joke, and he ended up getting fired because of it. And his joke, they were unbelievable. Like we gotta clip. That's what we'll do. We'll clip some uh we'll clip some Saturday Night Live uh OJ jokes in there. And yeah, he ended up like they they fired Norm McDonald's, he arguably one of the most popular uh weekend update hosts, and they got rid of him at the time because the oh because OJ was best friends with the NBC president. Was it? No, no, that he was CBS. That's a CBS guy. Yeah. Um yeah, so OJ eventually gets out of the car. And how did he get in the car? Did it start in his garage? I don't know. I so I watched something today trying again, a little homework. Um, but it didn't really talk about where it was. Yeah, where it started from because there was there was a report and there was an image of him driving away in the morning. Someone had a camera like. Uh that's OJ in that car, but it wasn't a Bronco. So I don't know if he drove his car to that maybe his buddy's house AC AC's house, not Slater, and jumped in there. So because I I don't know. And then you're like, what he's gonna shoot himself in the back of that Bronco with the guy driving the driving the way and they said they found $8,000 in cash on him.

Um we they cuff him, they bring him into his house. Okay. So I don't even know if they cuff him, but they let him go into his house, call his mother, yeah, use the bathroom, and have a cup of orange juice. I swear to God. So OJ had a cup of OJ before he was arrested before he put cuffs on.

Yeah. And then that OJ got to the scene too late, and then that's why a lot of his stuff was there. He was trying to cover up for his son. Interesting. So there's a lot. Yeah, me either. There's a lot. And I didn't dive into it because I I can't. I can't have another conspiracy that wraps my head around something. So I'm just gonna take that as that I don't believe it, but maybe I should start reading into it. I don't know.

What I don't get is I don't know how these people have the relationships with their kids. But now hey, I just signed you up without you knowing that we're gonna do three times a week hitting lessons, and you don't want to do it. You really don't even like doing this, but I'm gonna make sure you do it because you need to be better. I know. It doesn't make any sense. If they're having fun, like this softball thing, these girls, they all have fun, they're chanting different things, right? So I don't know, just watching it and it's supposed to be fun. It's just supposed to be. They're 10 and 11. She's 10 and 11.

And they don't drive themselves. They're not at the mercy of parents who work, they're not on the app. It's 515.

And and I hate um, listen, last Friday it was 90 degrees, and like the humidity was through the roof, and I was at we were at baseball, and I was just sweating, it was the uh Walsh's graduation party, and I was just sweating through my t-shirt, just watching baseball. I hate those days, but the last three days have been so nice. Oh, the weather's perfect. It's just like uh a great 75 degrees, 80 degrees with a breeze, where like at the end of the day, you can throw like a hoodie on or a long sleeve. Like, that's that's nothing better. Yeah, and then with that comes the with that good weather, you know, going out on the boat, like just having a day on the boat. And again, it could be 85, 90 degrees, you go out on the boat, it's 10, 15 degrees cooler, it's just a nicer day. So I'm I'm just loving that. Yeah to be school's not even over yet. I'm hating that. I could have talked about that, but it's not over yet. Um still going, but once it's done, and then you can kind of enjoy the summer a little bit. That's what that's what I'll do.

Like it just goes through him growing up, how he was growing up, goes through it. Just some author from Indiana. Just some author guy that um just some author that wrote it, and then just I mean, the last like 20 pages is just all the research he did, you know, like uh from news clippings from this, like everything in the back. So he must have followed him somehow, or he must have at least talked to Bird.

I mean, he was if it wasn't for his high school coach, and if it wasn't for um a recruiter from Indiana State, he would have never played college basketball. Like he went to Indiana and lasted like a month and left. Um he was he got recruited from Bobby Knight. Yeah, yeah. He couldn't do it. He hated he was such a homebody, went back home, started playing for a community college right outside of French Lake.

But but he was good enough to get recruited by the the team of the time. Oh no no he was great basketball.

No, no, he was an unbelievable basketball player. This was all him. So he was getting recruited by everyone still when he left Indiana. Like everybody was all over him, and he was like, No, I'm good. And then the following year was like playing pickup basketball and like scoring 40 points. Working for like the town. He was a DPW worker. Oh, he was really, and guys were coming to his house and he's like, No, I like I'm making money now, I'm doing this. And and he was a for whatever reason, Indiana State finally convinced him to go. He I I'm reading this and I was like, holy shit, like we almost didn't have Larry Bay. We almost didn't have him. And it had nothing to do with how good he was. It was him being he was worried about his mom, his he had issues with the the parents were divorced, they didn't really talk about it. The dad ended up killing himself later on. Like he had a ton of things. Were there pictures of his house? Did they show pictures of his house? Yeah, there's a bunch of pictures.

Like he was player of the year, he didn't even want to go to that, he didn't show up for some of the stuff where he got like awards, he just didn't want anything to do with it. That's kind of like the flip side was Magic, who loved the spotlight, loved all of it, and they're two of like their two best friends, yeah, yeah. And they met each other. That it was his going into his junior year, he went overseas and played with a like the best um college guys. Okay. And they went over there and and it was uh that was like the eye-opening thing, like who the f who is this guy?
