This Week's Obsessions:
Kyle: AKILA Eyewear Apollo Sunglasses
Emily: Blank Street's The Sleeve
Nate: "Below Deck"
We're Emily and Kyle. We started as coworkers in late night television and now we're best friends exploring NYC and our FYPs.
SPEAKER_01This is an interview show about obsessions. Ours, theirs, and maybe yours too. Welcome to We're Obsessed With You. One million dollars. Hi, Emily.
SPEAKER_03Hi.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to We're Obsessed With You, the show where we interview the people we're obsessed with about the things they're obsessed with. I'm Kyle O'Donnell.
SPEAKER_04I'm Emily Himes.
SPEAKER_01We're two best friends working in late night television.
SPEAKER_04We are.
SPEAKER_01And these this is our show. We're so happy to have you here.
SPEAKER_04Welcome.
SPEAKER_01Welcome.
SPEAKER_04If you're listening, hi. If you're watching. Hi.
SPEAKER_01We have a very snack-themed episode this week. We do.
SPEAKER_04I hope everyone here likes snacks.
SPEAKER_01We have this is gonna be a little ASMR.
unknownOh, baby.
SPEAKER_04Laura loves ASMR.
SPEAKER_01Well, this is actually perfect. My snack is perfect for Laura.
SPEAKER_04Oh dun dun dun.
SPEAKER_01It's gluten-free. These are, and I have not tried these. This is something I just saw in the store and I really wanted to try. And our guest, as you'll come to find out, is obsessed with consumer packaged goods, aka C P Gs. So we were like, oh, let's bring some of our favorite snacks. These are Quinn filled pretzel nuggets.
SPEAKER_04They're Quinn.
SPEAKER_01Yes, sorry. Quinn is the brand. And they're PB and J P and J Berry filled pretzel nuggets. They are certified gluten-free. And if there's one thing you gotta know about me, is that I love PBJ.
SPEAKER_04Tell us your other PBJ obsession.
SPEAKER_01I have the best, the absolute best cake in New York City for a birthday is a buttercup bake shop on in Midtown East that does a PBJ birthday cake. Speechless is incredible.
SPEAKER_04It was one of the best things. I couldn't even believe it. Julia, who doesn't even like cake, was like, the way you guys are all freaking out about this like makes me feel like I have to try it.
SPEAKER_01And she did she like it?
SPEAKER_04Did she try it?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. She's not here. Um but I love B and J. So I saw these and I was like, oh, I gotta try.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. No, I was also gonna say your other P B and J favorite thing is peanut butter and jelly MMs.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh my god, those are so good, but they're hard to find.
SPEAKER_04I know you were crazy when they were like going out of stock.
SPEAKER_01I know. I would have to go to Five Below, and famously I don't eat food from Five Below because I think it's five below quality. Um but here we go, we're gonna try these.
SPEAKER_03Do you like that the sound of joy?
SPEAKER_01I hope no one has um misophonia when people don't like the sound of people eating.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01Well, I love I gotta go say right away, don't love this color.
SPEAKER_04No, I don't love the color. Also, the size is tiny. They're little teeny tiny.
SPEAKER_01Cheers.
SPEAKER_04Cheers.
SPEAKER_01Now I'm getting the jelly. I didn't get the jelly at first.
SPEAKER_04I didn't get the jelly at all. And then you get the jelly at the end.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I don't hate them.
SPEAKER_01I don't I thought they were gonna be overwhelming peanut butter. Wow, I'm actually obsessed with these.
SPEAKER_04You're kind of they're really good.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04They're really good. Oh my god!
SPEAKER_01You wanna read the back of the label? Okay, okay. It says, I thought you might find you here. Obsessed with label reading?
SPEAKER_04No, I know I'm not supposed to hit the table, sorry, but that is just too good.
SPEAKER_01That's crazy.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Wow I like these a lot. I'm obsessed. I really am. Quinn, peanut butter, and jelly, berry-filled pretzel nuggets, gluten-free. Laura, my sister, I'm looking at you. I love these.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I brought a snack.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
unknownI know.
SPEAKER_01I'm trying to eat off mic.
SPEAKER_04I talked about this because I had my birthday recently, and I was saying how much I like these brownies that I just tried. Called Killer Brownie. I went to a party and they had a big tray of these brownies, and they were so good. And they were perfect because they were like little mini sizes. And then they sent me some. So I brought them. I haven't tried these yet. They're bigger than what I had at the parties. Killer brownie, cookie dough brownie with caramel, and a brookie. So I was gonna let you decide.
SPEAKER_01Great. I go brookie.
SPEAKER_04I want to start with like brookie.
SPEAKER_01That one has a lot going on in it. I want to know the base product.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I'm gonna say right now, I don't like a packaged baked good.
SPEAKER_04I hear you.
SPEAKER_01They're often very bad.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so we're gonna see if it's good. Yes. Because I had it like fresh for a party. There was a tray, so I've never had it like pre-packaged before.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_04So Kyle, do the honors. Gorgeous ASMR moment.
SPEAKER_01This smells like heaven. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04So it does say on the packaging, like you can heat it up.
SPEAKER_01What?
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, in the air fryer.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I didn't even think about that.
SPEAKER_01I put everything in the air fryer.
SPEAKER_04It's like do whatever you want. Do you want to throw it in the freezer? Throw it in the freezer. It says play by your own rules. Heat it up. Toss it in the freezer to chill. Let loose. Pile it high with ice cream. It's really like.
SPEAKER_01The bottom is a brownie and the top is cookie dough.
SPEAKER_04And that makes it no wait. Oh yeah, a brookie.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Is that what a brookie is? No, the top is a cookie. Not cookie dough.
SPEAKER_01Oh, but it's a soft cookie, which I love. I love a soft cookie.
SPEAKER_04This will be hard for ASMR because it's so soft.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's so chewy. Cheers.
SPEAKER_04Okay, cheers.
SPEAKER_01I don't know how it's so fudgy.
SPEAKER_04I don't either. That is fudge.
SPEAKER_01That's so good.
SPEAKER_04It's really good.
SPEAKER_01And this is how I like my brownies. Again, not sponsored by them.
SPEAKER_04But just like a newfound, like I just only learned about um killer brownie a few weeks ago, and I like I've had it every week, I think, now.
SPEAKER_01I'm obsessed.
SPEAKER_04They sell them at Morton Williams in the city. This is really good.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, can you close your eyes? Open.
SPEAKER_04Oh my god, I love them.
SPEAKER_01I'm obsessed with these sunglasses. Like completely obsessed. Whenever I wear them in a TikTok, everyone comments where they're from. And I was gatekeeping for a little bit, but now I'm not going to.
SPEAKER_04They are so chic.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. These are the Akila A K-I-L-A Apollo sunglasses in tortoiseshell. They're so great. They're like a thick statement glasses. And I like a bitchy sunglasses.
SPEAKER_04It looks really good with this whole outfit.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I just love a bitchy, bitchy sunglass. Like I want a statement one. I like so obsessed.
SPEAKER_04You bought it.
SPEAKER_01I bought a black page.
SPEAKER_04Shut up. What is the saying? Like it was so nice, you bought it twice.
SPEAKER_01Yes. But here's my thing. Do I change these lenses?
SPEAKER_04Yes, because this is like too, it's like almost, you know, like when a car wheel has like the black.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_04It's like it's just, it's a lot of black.
SPEAKER_01So I mean everyone does yellow. I could do yellow lenses or purple lenses.
SPEAKER_04What color are those?
SPEAKER_01These are just like brown tortoise.
SPEAKER_04No, the glens.
SPEAKER_01Oh, same thing. Like a kind of that like olive green kind of thing. I don't know, but I love these. I think they look so good.
SPEAKER_04They're chunky. I love the chunk.
SPEAKER_01And you often don't find men's sunglasses that are chunky. And these are obviously unisex.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Should I try them on?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_04My face doesn't look like really. What I love about them with this, but is that you can also buy.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I love them on you.
SPEAKER_04Really? Yeah. Oh my god, take a pick.
SPEAKER_01What I love about this brand is that you can through their website get prescription lenses.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_01So these are prescription. Those obviously aren't yet because I need to discover what I'm going to do.
SPEAKER_04So I can see.
SPEAKER_01But a lot of people.
SPEAKER_04I have a perfect vision.
SPEAKER_01FYI, everybody.
SPEAKER_04For now.
SPEAKER_01For now.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, there's so many times where I try to buy sunglasses and it's like, oh, now I have to go to my optometrist to get the lenses.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01But these were, I think, with the promo code this pair, sorry, with the lenses, like$96. Fine. I love them.
SPEAKER_04Fine.
SPEAKER_01They're so fabulous.
SPEAKER_04These are really fun. I know. I like them a lot. Um that's a really good obsession.
SPEAKER_01Thank you.
SPEAKER_04I like this one today. I don't always like your obsessions.
SPEAKER_01You're obsessed with my obsession? Yeah. Emily, what are you obsessed with this year?
SPEAKER_04Well, this is so funny because we're kind of on this like puffer thing, like trend, because you have these little puffers. I you know about that. Close your eyes. Look at this.
SPEAKER_01She's moving my stuff.
SPEAKER_04So open. Oh. We love Blank Street.
SPEAKER_01We love Blank Street.
SPEAKER_04And our friend Zach sent us something the other day on TikTok that said, come to Blank Street to get your puffer holder for your favorite Blank Street coffee. We immediately went online, spent$68, and each, well, we ordered three.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_04And we ordered little puffer holders to hold our coffees.
SPEAKER_01And it came with a little sign that says your favorite drinks, favorite accessory.
SPEAKER_04And now let's reveal how I'm like freaking out.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, packaging is on point. We love Blank Street. We know there's a lot of Blank Street slander out there.
SPEAKER_04And we like kind of gave in. We were like slandering at first, too. Yes.
SPEAKER_01But the thing is, when you're funded by VC, you can afford the best food scientists, flavor trend casters. They know exactly what they're doing.
SPEAKER_04And they're doing an excellent work.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, I love the feel of it.
SPEAKER_04This I'm I oh my god.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Wow. Now you may be thinking, what is this? Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01It is freaking out. A little sleeve for your coffee.
SPEAKER_04It's a puffer. And it's that minty green of Blank Street.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Oh my god, I love this so much.
SPEAKER_04That one's yours because we ordered another one. I have my own. But like I'm obsessed with it.
SPEAKER_01I'm obsessed.
SPEAKER_04I wasn't, I mean, I'm obsessed with the whole idea of it. And now I have it and I will be obsessed with it. But it's not something I've been using to be obsessed with, but I just like, come on, like, let's we love Blank Street.
SPEAKER_01Have you had their shaken vanilla? Well, I get the shaken vanilla bean, whatever, um iced espresso latte.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01It's so good. They always peanut butter and jelly latte. Remember that one? Yes, yes, yes. We did a test show. We've been working on the show for a long time. We did a test show, and Emily and I met at a Blank Street, and they had the peanut butter and jelly one. Fucking heaven on earth. There was nothing like that.
SPEAKER_04It was beautiful because they like the peanut butter on the street.
SPEAKER_01New York peanut butter on the glass. Oh.
SPEAKER_04And I know there's other what the beauty of this is you don't always have to just use it on Blank Street. No. Go all over town.
SPEAKER_01And because I usually make my own cold brew in the mornings. But like this.
SPEAKER_04So cute for like a little walk around time. Walk to the market with it.
SPEAKER_01I love this.
SPEAKER_04It's so cute, and I do think you're gonna get stopped on the street. A hundred percent. I do think someone would say something.
SPEAKER_01Oh, and I love the case. Oh my god, I love it.
SPEAKER_04You can also kind of can you wear it as a bracelet on your way to the coffee shop?
SPEAKER_01Well, I think it kind of looks like those workout bands that girls.
SPEAKER_04It totally looks like a workout band. An ankle weight.
SPEAKER_01I was like, you might killer brownie. I love this. I love it.
SPEAKER_04Now you can use that little bag for something too.
SPEAKER_01I love this so much.
SPEAKER_04I'm obsessed with it. I love it.
SPEAKER_01I love this so much. Um, if you're listening to this podcast, go to YouTube and subscribe because you can see all these products that we talk about. And we're really hot. SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And so we want to keep doing this show. So please, if you like anything that we talk about, or and it's what we talk about and also what our guests are are talking about.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, so check that out. Yeah. And I'm so excited about our guests today. I know.
SPEAKER_04We're really on like a food trend. Yes.
SPEAKER_01We have Nate Rosen here today, who is a writer and what's the word you would use to describe what else he does? Commentator on CPGs, consumer packaged goods.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So we are going to talk to him all about Expo West that he just went to, where he got the latest food trends.
SPEAKER_04I can't wait for him to tell us what's hot. Like what should we be eating? That's cool.
SPEAKER_01Besides protein.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Like protein is everything.
SPEAKER_01We'll be right back with Nate Rosen.
SPEAKER_03Bye.
SPEAKER_01We're here with Nate Rosen, an expert in everything, consumer packaged goods, aka C PGs. You have so much going on. And when we were coming up with guest ideas, I was trying to like explain what you do. And I was like, he talks about snacks.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. In like so many different ways. Um, so could you tell our listeners about the Express Checkout multiverse that you have created? I like the word multiverse. I do too. Well, because you have 10 million things going on.
SPEAKER_00It's better than media company. Media company sounds really boring. Yes. Uh, but it is very exciting, and we do have a lot going on. Um, yeah, so Express Checkout's my my media company. Uh so it started as a newsletter. Now we have a newsletter that goes out twice a week, every Monday and Friday. We have a podcast every Wednesday called The Curious Consumer. Uh, we have social media accounts, Instagram, TikTok, all the all the stuff. And we cover the latest in CPG consumer brands and retail. So my business partner and I, Jenna, we come from more the business side of these brands. So we have that lens, but we are doing it in a way that's also very comfortable for a consumer to come in, a curious consumer, if you will, to come in and learn about all these brands. So we cover, we do it weekly. Every Monday, we cover last week's news across CPG and consumer brands, retail, fundraising news, all that kind of stuff. And then um, we also cover everything that we've tried throughout the week every Friday. Uh, and then the Monday one we cover like we do analysis and context and all that fun stuff.
SPEAKER_01This is not a pun, but I just have to say you make everything so consumable. Like your TikToks, your your Substack. It's true. Like I'm I don't have a mind for business at all. And I do think that you're very good at explaining this world to people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and that was that was sort of the point of it. I mean, I I think there's a lot of trade publications that are really good. Uh, there's BevNet, there's Nash, which is kind of all one company. There's Food Business, there's there's a surprising amount of publications around the CPG world. There, there's Beauty Insider. There's a ton. Um and then there's a ton of people who are doing like affiliate plays and sort of just talking about brands that they're either paid to or they just sort of are integrated into their life. Yes. And there's nothing really sitting in between where it's like it's informative about what's on shelf and what you're buying and what's in your pantry, but it's also like still very good for an industry person to read.
SPEAKER_01And I also think the benefit of what you're doing is kind of like cutting through a lot of the bullshit, especially when it comes to celebrity brands. Like, is the celebrity just throwing their name on some product? Are they really tallow in it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh my god, there's so much beef tallow. There's so much beef tallow. I I was talking to someone about this that I think it's like the beef lobby. Oh, America loves a lobby. Yes. We love a good lobby, the sugar lobby, the tech lobby, whatever it else there is. I am sure the beef lobby is behind this. They're earning.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Everything about big trade show was like beef tallow. Oh, unbelievable. Well, one thing we wanted to mention is that the Hollywood Reporter just came out with an article about niche casting. And we think that you are like the embodiment of it. It's this idea that there's a very there's um the democratization of media is that like anyone can make anything about anything. You know what I mean? And I think that's so cool.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I guess like when did you realize you had a following of people that really wanted to know about this?
SPEAKER_00It took a while. Yeah. So I started in this world really like I worked a few years out of college and then March 2020, when the work from home order came through, um, I was already sort of helping out uh alumni in my college, helping with a snack brand, and just sort of dove in headfirst in that space and started DMing people on Twitter and got on Clubhouse pretty early. The audio only became a mess of a platform. That was really that I had that very many backwards.
SPEAKER_04I did too.
SPEAKER_00But I think that was a very like helpful platform for me to be on. I I got on relatively early, I think it was like sub 10,000 people. So before all the uh really bad people came in. Uh as they're want to do to bundle it all into one. There were some bad groups I was part of I was listening into. And through that and through Twitter, like I started to just DMing DM people that I thought were smarter than me. I was like, hey, you seem like you know what you're doing. We'd love to just chat. Not even like pick anybody's brain, just like hear from them, learn from them, see what they're up to, tell them what I'm uh what I'm up to. Yeah. Sort of just sort of gauge if this is a space that I want to be in. Then I started slowly like putting my own opinions out there and commenting on people and asking questions and starting slowly but surely without realizing it, building a little bit of a personal brand for myself. And it started mostly on Twitter, pre-ex Twitter. Interesting. Um, which I'm still on, but far less. Yeah. But there was a lot of active like direct-to-consumer e-commerce people on Twitter at the time, and that also a lot of them were working with cool, fuzzy brands. So I like and met a bunch of interesting people through that. Then I worked at a company called uh it was a fine finance company, it doesn't matter which one it was, but I got to talk with them. They're great, but uh kind of irrelevant. But was getting uh peeked behind the scenes at a lot of these companies, and then through that, also just started to meet a lot of people. I just networked a lot, yeah, and slowly but surely we sort of grew an audience and uh people started knowing me as the CPG guy, and it was really like by accident that I did it. Eventually I was aware of what was happening and realized like my Twitter following was growing, and then I started the newsletter, and that was slowly growing and getting a lot of good feedback. And now we're I mean, our newsletter surpassed 10,000 recently. Congratulations, crazy to me, yeah. Uh, and our our Instagram is almost at 45,000 right now in the past like four months, it's grown from like 3,000, but that's mostly just because I started to be activated. Um, so yeah, like I I realized like I had a knack for talking about this space in a way that I think is a little bit more accessible to a wider audience, to a curious consumer. Yeah, 1,000%. As we call it, and it's it's it's been really fun. But yeah, it was like very slowly but surely figured out like, oh, this is what I'm I like to do, and I think I'm good at it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I love that.
SPEAKER_04Well, it's fun that you're doing something you're like, it's like it didn't even feel like work at first. It just became this.
SPEAKER_00Right. And it's it's funny that it's like you say niche, but it's also brands constantly surround us. Right. So true. Wearing a bunch of brands. Yeah. It's like you go to the grocery store, it's all just brands and people behind it. And I thought that was interesting. And I think everybody's curious about how the world works in some ways. Yeah. This is the angle I want to tackle that question with. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You said in an interview that you would go around as a kid spelling the word snack. Oh, yeah. Um, is there something from your childhood that's discontinued that you would like to bring back?
SPEAKER_00Uh the kudos bar?
SPEAKER_04Um, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, and yogos. Oh, the little yogurt uh sticks.
SPEAKER_04Oh, that's a goggler, excuse me.
SPEAKER_00Yogos were dried fruit coated in in yogurt. The closest I got something recently from a brand called like Nature's Bounty, I think. They have like a healthier problem. Actually, that's probably what it is. Some brand called like Nature Something, and it it it's close, but it's it's not like that. I made a video about discontinued snacks that I want to bring back. The Hershey's Kissables.
SPEAKER_01Who were those?
SPEAKER_00So they were mini candy-coated Hershey kisses in like a little bag, like you don't have that beast. They're so good. Wow. Or the Wonka Donut. What's the Wonka donut?
SPEAKER_04Wait, so you were just like obsessed with snacks as a kid. You're like, these I love tomato ones, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Go around my home spelling snacks because I was always excited for what was next. I've I've I've I've always been like a grazer. Uh huh. Personally, eating habits, bad. The amount of like crap I'll just have for breakfast sometimes is is not good. And I I know what I should be having. Yeah, I talk about it. I have a good breath. But I do love to graze, and I I loved going to a grocery store as a kid. And who doesn't? I love grocery store.
SPEAKER_04We love a grocery store.
SPEAKER_01In every new city I go to, I go.
SPEAKER_04When I'm traveling abroad, I'm like, okay, one of like well, we can go to a museum, but like let's go to that grocery store too.
SPEAKER_01It's it's graceful learn a city's like priorities. Like if you walk into the liquor section, you're like, oh, I'm in Miami. Like this is just one of those.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, exactly. And there's a lot of fun grocery stores abroad. Like, I really want to either I want to do this or I need somebody else to do this, is to bring Picard over from Paris. Oh, yeah, France.
SPEAKER_04Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_00You know what Picard is? Yes.
SPEAKER_04Do you know what Paris is? We're familiar.
SPEAKER_00No, yes, I know Picard. Picard is for those who don't know, it is all frozen foods. Yes. They have some licensing stuff, but it's it's all frozen foods. It's so cool. It's like the Trader Joe's frozen section, just the entire store. Yeah. Amazing. That's so fun. I think it would crush it here.
SPEAKER_04Well, also anything from Paris, it'd just be like, it's so chic. We have to go. Right. Exactly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You mentioned Expo West. Yes. For the uninitiated, what is Expo West? I'm obsessed with Expo West.
SPEAKER_00You should go. Can anyone go? Not anyone can go, but Media Press can go. We should do anything. You are media impressed. This is very relevant for you. It is, there's a couple ways you can describe it. It's the Super Bowl of CPG, it's the Disneyland of CPG, it is an Anaheim, or the Coachella of CPG. Okay. So it's food, beverage, and then some like beauty, skincare, home cleaning stuff, but all like natural products. Yeah. Ish. I say ish because like built bar was there, and I don't think that's a natural product.
SPEAKER_04It's delicious. Delicious.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But I wouldn't call it a natural product.
SPEAKER_04Nothing in there.
SPEAKER_00Um, so it's around like 70,000 attendees, around 4,000 brands exhibiting everything from day one brands. There was a brand called uh Lasso. It's a protein jello, collagen-based protein jello. It's delicious. He's the founder's here in the city. He had a booth. He launched a week prior to Oxpo West, which is crazy. I commend him for doing that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04He said it was a great show, but do they have to be prepared that like someone will be there that wants to order a big so he has to be prepared to know that they're all at least at that level ready to provide large amounts-ish.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yeah. I mean, it it is a good place to just meet these buyers and get in touch with them. You don't necessarily need to have a booth because the booth can be expensive. Of course. But there's plenty of ways to also get free booths or discounted booths. There's there's giveaways, there's organizations that do it. There's like a whole section on one of the halls that is just Minnesota brands. So the state of Minnesota funds these brands to help them get a booth at the trade show.
SPEAKER_04Wow. So it should be a documentary about the people.
SPEAKER_01So there really it really is trying to elevate and publicize some smaller brands.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean, the point of the show mostly is to meet buyers and to get big POs to go into Target Kroger. Right, right. Whatever. But we did we did interview some of the people on the show floor. We interviewed some different founders, different companies. We talked to the Chobani team, we talked to uh Anok, who's the founder of Belgian Boys, which is like a baked breakfast, uh like they make mini pancakes, mini Belgian waffles. Oh, I've seen that brand. I've seen that brand, it is delicious. And Anouk is lovely. But for some of these brands, like they're well distributed. Chobani is Chobani.
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, but for them, it's also a marketing opportunity, it's a chance for them to tell the industry, hey, like we acquired Loch Lomb and Daily Harvest in the past two years. So like we are one brand. Uh-huh. It's also, if you think about it, there's 70,000 people. Those are 70,000 potential new customers for your product. Absolutely. So that's also like an opportunity. Um, and it's also like it's the industry show of the year. There, there's other ones, there's smaller ones throughout the year, but that's the big one. Do people get crazy? Oh. Oh my god. So there's a couple of reasons why people get crazy. One, the free shit.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00There's a lot of free stuff. There's a ton of free bags. There's a lot of bags. There's a fake Birkin. There's a fake goyag bag. Oh, I should have brought the fake Goyard. Oh my god. Next time you're on. Yes, I'll send a picture so you can put it in. Yes. But Belgian boys, they did a fake pink big Goyard bag. Oh my god. Beautiful. Yeah. Uh, it was beautiful, and I have it in my home. Somebody did a fake Birkin. Cute. A brand called Pretty Tasty. They're a sparkling collagen-infused tea. Hat on the hat on the hat. It's very tasty. It's 10 grams of protein, collagen protein. They had a they had fake Birkins with the little like Hermes scarf on it. Cute.
SPEAKER_04Adorable.
SPEAKER_00So that's one craziness. Last year there were security had to be called also for the Belgian boys booth because they had this big puffy pink bag that everybody wanted. So they had security come, police came, like somebody was elbowing someone. This is a professional bag. Oh my god. These are technically your colleagues. Right. Not even adults, your colleagues. There are some kids there. The other crazy side is the sampling side of things. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04Some of these people I don't I can't go. I can't go. I'd be a nightmare.
SPEAKER_00Oh, and you should be because they also don't want to ship it back. It's very easy to do. Oh my god. It costs a lot for these brands. Some of these brands half a million dollars to go all in all. Wow. From the booth, from the shipping the products, from getting the people there, everything. But I've seen people literally go up to a booth and just swipe as they as they keep walking.
SPEAKER_04Just vote in their bag.
SPEAKER_01We connected on social media because we saw each other at the Fresh Direct event.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so much fun. We loved it there.
SPEAKER_01They opened that final thing for the freebies. I was shocked. I was disgusted. Yes. People were.
SPEAKER_04It felt like supermarket sweeps where you're like, we gotta get it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And all of those people are just like us. We we get six stuff all the time.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, people don't have to be a few. Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_01People with three caraway pants.
SPEAKER_04I didn't get a caraway. We couldn't even get the caraway pants.
SPEAKER_00Thank you. It was at an event on Thursday. Oh my god. Did you go on the tour of Frustract? Of course. We did a two-hour tour like two weeks prior.
SPEAKER_04Wow, we are jealous of that. Ours was too fast.
SPEAKER_00So you should go back. It is so insane what they're doing in there. It's crazy.
SPEAKER_04I couldn't believe it. Just from the barcode, knowing where everything was so intricate.
SPEAKER_00And it's also just like, wow, there's a lot of product. Yes. There's so many brands. Yes. There were like eight different kinds of radish companies. It's crazy. Unbelievable. Oh no. But the FreshTruck stuff it's so cool to see behind the scenes of all this stuff. Completely. 24 hours a day. 24 hours a day. I mean, one of the pieces of content that like we want to put out is the behind behind the scenes of this stuff, how it's made, how your products even just get distributed. It's crazy. Yeah. There's so much behind the scenes that people just don't see. And like when you're like yelling at a brand for doing something, you don't like realize like how much can go wrong behind the scenes that makes it to their plate and it's it's wild.
SPEAKER_04They told us that bananas are the most ordered and the most complained about.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Which obviously, I mean. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Negative 10 degrees. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04And then they have that little heating room for all the employees. Wild.
SPEAKER_01We loved it. It was so much fun. So you brought a big Hulkin with some goodies.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_01Could we try some?
SPEAKER_04Should we chase? Yeah, or yeah, let's let's like pull out a few and tell us what you have about.
SPEAKER_00Is fun or good, or I have a story about. Okay, great. Bring it out.
SPEAKER_04Let's do let's start with the dudes.
SPEAKER_00Great.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Tell us about this. Give me your first thoughts. Well, it's obviously supposed to be a cheese, eh?
SPEAKER_04It's giving me a little um, but like the coloring is like a Reese's pieces, like the yellow and the browns. But yes, I'm thinking a cheese, some sort of healthy cracker. Except for the other.
SPEAKER_01Can I tell you my thing about protein? Yeah, please. I think because of Ozempic, protein is the new status symbol because people lose muscle mass.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So now we're going to start seeing even more protein and muscle building things on the market than we've ever seen before.
SPEAKER_00Oh, yeah. It's that, and then a mixture of like health and wellness has just become and fitness has become such a ubiquitous trend that like protein stuff fits so naturally into people's uh everyday routine.
SPEAKER_04It is amazing that there continue to be new brands of something similar. Like, yes, I understand not everybody. I'm gonna just wait for you.
SPEAKER_01They don't make this package easy to get into, let me tell you. Kadoos. Is that what they're called? Kadutes. Kadoots.
SPEAKER_04I thought you were trying to say I thought you were trying to say kiddos.
SPEAKER_00Fun fact about this, they patented that shape. Real wrapper. So she's it's that's a patented shape.
SPEAKER_04Yes.
SPEAKER_00Probably Oreo is. Like you can get kind of crazy with what you patent and trademark in the food and beverage world. Probably.
SPEAKER_01I feel like in the 90s, going back to that snack question. They are smaller than I expected. Um the Nabisco hundred calorie packs. I love those. They're all hexagons. Yeah. Right? Yeah. They must have delicious.
SPEAKER_00Those, I'm okay. Those I've sorry, I've had so many snacks. The Nabisco 100 calories I want back. Ooh. Yeah. I like these a lot. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I like these a lot.
SPEAKER_00So there's three flavors. There's cheddar, there's a ranch. I think it's a ranch. And then a sea salt. Um, so the founder of this, her name's Rachel Mansfield. We interviewed her for our podcast.
SPEAKER_04Rachel Mansfield. Yeah. Rachel Mansfield. And Rachel Overnight Oats. Doesn't she have a Rachel? Does she have a cookbook?
SPEAKER_00She does have a cookbook. Yes. I know Rachel Mansfield.
SPEAKER_04I mean, I don't know her personally.
SPEAKER_00She she has um like a million followers on Instagram, I think. I follow her for a long time. She has a venture studio as well called Great Shit Ventures, but there's no vowels in it.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00And then she launched this.
SPEAKER_04Um I believe so.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, she launches this. It's meant for kids. Um it's protein, seed oil free. Yeah. Lunchbox ready. So yeah, this just launched.
SPEAKER_04Those are really good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's delicious. Yeah. All right. Tell us about Julie's. So Julie's is a date company. They make they make they grow jewel dates. They make the dates. They pump them out. Um, so this is a new product from them that is pre-launched, hence why it's in a woo! Oh, yeah. So that's like four different flavors in one.
SPEAKER_04I love it.
SPEAKER_00So this is a candied date. So they added like citric acid and sugar to coating the date. So there's in there, I'm sure there's peach, watermelon, cherry cola, blue raspberry, and maybe a green apple. Yeah. So there's four candied date brands at the show. Really? True dates, which is one out of Denmark. They have they have every flavor you can think of. They had a caramel popcorn flavor, they had a banana flavor, they had a cheers. They had everything. So Julie's is launching this.
SPEAKER_04We put date better in our um dressing room. Oh, gift bags.
SPEAKER_00Date better's great. They've done a ton of collabs too with some other brands. They did one with um Burlap and Barrel, which is a spice and seasoning brand, which I love.
SPEAKER_04Their combos are always fun. Yeah. A little different.
SPEAKER_00They're really hate this, but I like it.
SPEAKER_04Me too. I actually like this. I like this a lot.
SPEAKER_01I like this a lot. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'm not really a date person.
SPEAKER_01This was I would dem if I was stoned right now, I could demolish that entire bag in five minutes. The nice thing about Julie's is because no, I agree.
SPEAKER_00And I have. Um, they're a date company, so they can get really fresh dates. Good dates. Their main product when they first launched was just dates in a box. Yeah. Wow. And these are really good dates. Yeah. Very good. All right, grab one more product.
SPEAKER_04Okay. Okay, Kyle.
SPEAKER_00There's also drinks.
SPEAKER_04Oh, update.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you got Kim Kardashian's drink.
SPEAKER_04Oh, oopsies.
SPEAKER_00Oopsie poopsie. No, I know nothing about it.
SPEAKER_04So this was just announced like two weeks ago, I feel like, about this.
SPEAKER_00I made a video about it. She did repost it to her story. Oh, also, so okay. So I made a video about it. So background to all this. I know the founder of this brand. Okay. Co-founder. Uh, Daniel Solomon's We Look Alike. Two two nice Jewish boys with big schnazzes and glasses. Uh, people have said we looked like brothers. The brand technically started 2022, 2023. Okay. Kim founded in 2023. If you go back to some episodes of Keeping Up the Kardashians, you can see the old branding in the old province. Interesting. That is delicious. Yeah, it's really good. And um then through that, they got connected. They decided to like sundown the brand and then relaunch it literally like two weeks ago with her as co-founder. Which for people who don't know, this happens all the time. I got some comments about this on the video I made. They're like, oh, but she didn't found it. It started in 2022. This happens all the time. Yeah. All the time. It's just who cares?
SPEAKER_04It's a rebrand?
SPEAKER_00Uh it's a rebrand. The refresh uh agency called Day Job did the branding. Um they did the David Bar. Um R I P they're fine.
SPEAKER_01That whole drama. It has uh shocked the Brooklyn gay community, let me just tell you. Did you tweet that?
SPEAKER_00Because I saw that on the No, but I like it. Okay, there's a viral tweet. There was a viral tweet that said that. What is it? Is it a gay bar?
SPEAKER_01I just think like any kind of protein maxing. Okay. It's sure it's also that it's so low in calories, so it's like that perfect product.
SPEAKER_00It's magical. Yeah. And it's why people were mad at it. Yeah. Um they're that's a whole other thing. They're fine, they'll be fine. They're also launching an ice cream, a high protein ice cream, by the way. Interesting. There was a truck going around Expo West. They can't exhibit because they're not a natural product. Interesting.
SPEAKER_04Interesting.
SPEAKER_00This is delicious. I would I would order this. Yes.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's good.
SPEAKER_00The Clementine one is also very good. This is berry. That's berry.
SPEAKER_04I like it.
SPEAKER_00But I try cloud and I don't love cloud.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I do.
SPEAKER_00The dill pickle one is good. Oh, I haven't heard that one. I I have mixed feelings about the rest because they use whey protein, so it like the popcorn's fine and they're doing very well, I've heard. Um they're in Target.
SPEAKER_04I feel like once you get into Target, that's it.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't mean you're doing well. Really? It's better for Target than it is for the brand. What? So you knew that?
SPEAKER_04Don't I actually did?
SPEAKER_00I think probably you probably wrote my newsletter. Yeah, the retail stuff for brands is really interesting because it's like it's great, it's buzzy, but if you can't move product and get people into the store, yeah, buy that product and hit good velocities and repurchases, it's a better deal for Target. Right, right.
SPEAKER_04They're making more money. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But they're doing fine in Target.
SPEAKER_04Right, right.
SPEAKER_01I could talk about this all day. But we want to be right back with your obsession. Yes. Oh, yeah. Give us one word to tease us. Yacht.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I'd love to go on one.
SPEAKER_01Please. We'll be right back. We're back. Emily, can you grab one more thing out of that? I want to do just one more snack. Oh, okay. I'm having the best time with this. Oh, yeah. So you teased us with the word yacht.
SPEAKER_04We put these in the gift back.
SPEAKER_00Great brand collab too. Daily crunch and fly by Jing.
SPEAKER_04Oh, yeah. I actually haven't tried these.
SPEAKER_00Oh, the chili oil, right?
SPEAKER_04But we put those in the late night green rooms. Because they have cute little sizing.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well, I could eat this on a yacht. Oh yeah. What are you obsessed with right now?
SPEAKER_04Tell us.
SPEAKER_01Blow deck.
SPEAKER_00Constantly obsessed, actually.
SPEAKER_04Always from the beginning. Like, when did you get into it?
SPEAKER_00So I got into it, I think I was home from college. Like how I don't know 10 years ago? I don't know how old I am.
SPEAKER_04Don't age yourself. I was home from college.
SPEAKER_00I was folding laundry in at my parents' house in our playroom. In a playroom, very Connecticut suburb. We didn't we didn't have a basement because we're not in the Midwest. Um I was folding laundry, and girlfriend and I at the time were like, let's put on some TV. We put on Bravo because parents still had cable up there. I don't know if they ditched the cord yet, but put on Bravo and there was a marathon going. And we very quickly got caught up and very quickly stopped folding laundry. And honestly, that was the show that got me into reality TV. Outside of Top Chef. I was watching Top Chef prior, but that was that. That feels different.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Who was your favorite captain across Blowdeck? Captain Glenn. I think he Sailing Yacht. Sailing Yacht, which I don't know if you know that one. Okay, so Sailing Yacht, fun fact, I think got canceled because the boat got sold.
SPEAKER_04Kyle, insider information. I don't know about that.
SPEAKER_00So I saw this on one of the short forms that I watch. It could have been Reels, it could have been shorts on YouTube. Uh could have been TikTok.
SPEAKER_04But I like how you say short forms. Yeah. Instead of being like TikTok. I'm on all of them. Right.
SPEAKER_00TikTok can't own that. No. Especially now.
SPEAKER_04Especially now. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_00Mary owns it and I don't want to give him anything. Yeah. Nothing. Yeah, yeah. Okay, short forms. He owns too much media. But sailing out, uh, Captain Glenn was definitely my favorite. He, I think, was the most sensible of the captains. The dealing with the interactions with the crew and the guests, I always felt like he knew when to step in and when not to step in. I I also like Captain Jason. Yeah. I feel like he's like stepped up his presence on TV a little bit more over the years. Like he's gotten like a little bit better. Um I love Captain Sandy and uh oh my god, who's the other captain? Captain Carrie. Captain Carrie.
SPEAKER_04I don't know Captain Carrie.
SPEAKER_01He started off on Adventure. Adventure. Yes. And now is Met.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Because Jason's down under. Jason's down under. Sandy is now main. Right, because um Captain Lee left. Yeah. So why what is it about Blow Deck that got you into reality TV?
SPEAKER_00So I think it's the most accessible of the reality TV shows. I completely agree. And I think like for someone who wasn't fully interested and then became very interested, and I watch Housewives and I watch everything. It's people working.
unknownYes.
SPEAKER_00Like it's very interesting. Yes. Like that sounds boring, but it's a real job. It's the crew of these mega yachts. Yes, they're like probably cast in a certain way. And yes, there's relationship drama and kissing and through hot tubs and drinking and whatever. There's still the traditional reality TV mishigash that goes on, but they're also working. And like if they stop working, the boat blows up. So it's like really interesting at the same time. And the priority is safety.
SPEAKER_01Like the priority isn't entertainment. Right. Right. It's to provide these guests a safe. Still a bonus.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I love when they like call the cops because somebody brought drugs on board. I just want them and I'm begging them. And anytime like I I get to interact with somebody who is either in in the Bravo verse, either from behind the scenes or actually on screen. And luckily, I've met a lot of Bravo liberties and reality stars recently because they're all they all have brands for some reason. I'm I just want more crossovers. I want more, I want my housewives to go on the boat. I want my top chefs to go on the boat. I want everybody. I was talking to Joe Sasto, who was on Pasta Joe with the curly mustache. Yep. Uh Portland season of Top Chef, I want to say. He has two different CPG brands now, Rippy and and Tontos, which is a puffed pasta brand. I was like, you should go on below deck. That'd be really fun. Yeah. I also told I did tell Harry Hamlin he should go on. Oh no, I told Harry Hamlin he should go on Traders and then Sisa was on Traders. Um Harry also has a CPG brand. Yes, he does. Harry's famous. I love it. I should have brought I should have brought some. But below deck is just so fun. There's also never a week without an episode, no season. It's like Christmas, maybe.
SPEAKER_04Constantly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, low deck, blow deck, mid, low deck sailing out.
SPEAKER_04It just keeps going.
SPEAKER_01I want to build your dream cast. So let's who's your dream captain, first stew, bosun, and oh, and a chef.
SPEAKER_04Remember the chef that didn't know how to cook?
SPEAKER_01And wasn't a real chef? Or the Russian one?
SPEAKER_04She did like the nachos.
SPEAKER_01She lasted too long. Yes.
SPEAKER_04This woman wasn't uh capable.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so who are you putting as captain? From the previous seasons.
SPEAKER_00Yes. I want Captain Glenn. Okay. I love that man. Chiefs do. I'm gonna bring back Kate.
SPEAKER_01Love Kate. Kate's gonna be a little bit. Oh, Kate's great.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_01I love Aisha. Just with Roxanne. She's gonna be Aisha.
SPEAKER_04Oh, congrats. Congrats, Aisha.
SPEAKER_00Bosin. Malia's bosun. I love Malia. I think Sensible. Sensible. Yeah. She's great. So like female bosun feels good.
SPEAKER_04So far, do you think everyone's getting along?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Okay, right. Yeah, yeah. Well, usually I feel like the best people are the ones who can just also get along with everybody else. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And the the hardest, the hard workers are the ones that get along with everyone. Yeah. Like because they all understand that safety is online. You know what I mean? Yes. And who are you having as chef? Rachel. Kind of crazy. Rachel's crazy. Loved her.
SPEAKER_00Rachel had also like she had the right amount of chef energy, but also wasn't doing what like wasn't going crazy. Like Ben kind of goes crazy every once in a while. Consistently good food though, which is very nice. Yeah. I think Rachel's a good, yeah, Rachel's a great one.
SPEAKER_04I think it's who's the one that had like a breakdown and he was like, I have to leave the ship.
SPEAKER_00Oh, uh uh Leon? The French one?
SPEAKER_04No, was he French?
SPEAKER_00Who came back?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, then he came back.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes. He was great his second time around. Yes. Good for him. Yeah, he had a he had an issue with Frasier. Yes. Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_04I watched that season.
SPEAKER_00Because he like watched the he he watched his own season and was like, wait, Fraser's got me fired. And it's like, well, no, not really. You should not have stayed, unfortunately. But he came back and it was great.
SPEAKER_04Oh, great.
SPEAKER_01Yes, he was. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Redemption season.
SPEAKER_01Um we're running out of time, but we want to do a lightning round for some final hot topics. Simply tell us if you're obsessed or over it. Let's hear it.
SPEAKER_04Nuts and carrot cake.
SPEAKER_01Over it. Ranch. Love it.
SPEAKER_04Upper East Side.
SPEAKER_00Obsessed. Upper West Side. Would be obsessed if I lived there.
SPEAKER_04Aries.
SPEAKER_00Aries?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, like are you in uh like the sign?
SPEAKER_00Leo. I'm a Leo too. When? July 30th. August 8th. Arnold Schwarzenegger and I share a birthday. Oh.
SPEAKER_04George Washington and B.
SPEAKER_01Gloopy Font. Content.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_01I like that.
SPEAKER_04Solomon sneakers.
SPEAKER_00Never owned a pair.
SPEAKER_01Would love to. Soon to be obsessed. Already addressed this, but David Barr lawsuit. Indifferent.
SPEAKER_04Cats.
SPEAKER_01Over it.
SPEAKER_04Ready? We have one more question.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Three, two, one. Are you obsessed with us?
SPEAKER_00Of course. Oh my god. Nate, tell everyone where they can find you. Yes. They can find me in so many goddamn places. Multiverse. SPEAKER_00I saw that and I'm obsessed with that. That's amazing. That was amazing. Good for her. I want to be her. I want to be connected with her on LinkedIn. I want to DM her. I did meet Leah McSweeney on LinkedIn, which I'm very proud of. Wow. Yeah. I just DMed her. Amazing. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04The power of DM.
SPEAKER_00Power of DMs. But yeah, I'm everywhere.
SPEAKER_01Awesome. Fabulous. Everyone, check out Nate, check out Express Checkout. We love your words. Thank you so much. This is so much fun. Thanks, Nate.
SPEAKER_04Now let's eat.
SPEAKER_01Thanks for tuning in.
SPEAKER_04Are you obsessed with us? Please like, comment, and subscribe.
SPEAKER_01Bye.
SPEAKER_03So this is really, really these are ready? The tacos, chicken and shiladas, and a nachos with salsa. In nine years in yachting, I've never refused to take a dish out.
