This Week's Obsessions:
Emily: Sculpt Society
Kyle: Loafers with Colorful Socks
Krissy: Beach Snacks
We're Emily and Kyle. We started as coworkers in late night television and now we're best friends exploring NYC and our FYPs.
SPEAKER_00This is an interview show about obsessions. Ours, theirs, and maybe yours too. Welcome to We're Obsessed With You. I hate my haircut. Hi Emily.
SPEAKER_03Hi.
SPEAKER_00Hi everyone. Welcome to the Wowie Offices. This is We're Obsessed With You, the show where we talk to the people we're obsessed with. About the things there.
SPEAKER_03Obsessed with.
SPEAKER_00I'm Kyle O'Donnell.
SPEAKER_03I'm Emily Hives.
SPEAKER_00Emily, how are you?
SPEAKER_03Doing great, Kyle.
SPEAKER_00I'm so happy. How are you? Thank you for asking. I am doing well.
SPEAKER_03Do I ever respond with how are you?
SPEAKER_00Not often.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_00This Sunday is Mother's Day.
SPEAKER_03It is.
SPEAKER_00We're obsessed with moms. You're soon to be a mom.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, dude. How do you feel?
SPEAKER_03I'll have to throw a party next year.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes. Absolutely. Work on your first Mother's Day. Yes. So I wanted to talk a little bit about the things that our moms are obsessed with.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And one thing jumps out to me when I thought about this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I want to know.
SPEAKER_00My mom was obsessed with buyer's choice carolers. Do you know these are?
SPEAKER_03I don't know what this is.
SPEAKER_00So for the uninitiated, buyer's choice was a are these figurines that are, if you ask me, the ugliest goddamn fucking things you've ever seen in your life. And my mom was obsessed with them. They were created in the 70s by this woman in Pennsylvania who went to London and like fell in love with these Victorian-looking carolers. They're all made to look like carolers. And each one, like a snowflake, is different. Because they're all hand created.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00This is what they look like.
SPEAKER_03They're huge.
SPEAKER_00Yes. They're about this tall.
SPEAKER_03Going for about$90.
SPEAKER_00My mom had hundreds of them. And as you can tell.
SPEAKER_03I mean they're adorable. Did she put them out just around the holidays? Because Carolers is very Christmas.
SPEAKER_00Correct. Originally they were all just Christmas themed. Oh, where they branched out.
SPEAKER_03They branched out.
SPEAKER_00Now you can get them for any time of year. And they have IP as well. So you can get the Charles Dickens collection, the Nutcracker collection. Oh my god. If you go to many seaside towns, you'll see them and it'll have like this town name.
SPEAKER_03It's like don't get an ornament, get one of these.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And you can also buy the homes. You can buy the mailboxes. You can buy the ice room. We had everyone.
SPEAKER_03I would say that's adorable as miniature, but it's not. This is like these are huge. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And they're so fucking creepy looking.
SPEAKER_03Is there one that your mom was like very that felt like really attached to? Like, did you save any of them?
SPEAKER_00No, I I hated them. They're so creepy. Look at these things.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know if you'd save one for the holidays or one that you knew she had.
SPEAKER_00Well, there's one that I really wanted.
SPEAKER_03Oh, look at you now. Now there's one you wanted.
SPEAKER_00Of like the family lore behind it. Um, so there was the Nutcracker collection.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Well, I love that.
SPEAKER_00Yes. And for those of you that don't, or the Nutcracker, there's someone called the Rat King in it. And this was the one that my mom wanted so badly, and she got from my grandfather. Oh, it is a rat.
SPEAKER_03It's a rat king.
SPEAKER_00Rat king with about one, two, three, four, five, six small heads coming out of the rating.
SPEAKER_03Of this collar, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it's dressed in Christmas regalia. And I wanted this. It just like, it's so funny to me.
SPEAKER_03How much is it going for online?
SPEAKER_00Well, this one's signed. That's the thing.
SPEAKER_03There's also different things. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00This one's only going for 70 bucks. Um, first edition.
SPEAKER_03Oh.$70. It's probably.
SPEAKER_00My mom was obsessed with them.
SPEAKER_03Wow.
SPEAKER_00And we had them out all year round. Fortunately, before she passed, she got rid of a bunch of them because she was downsizing, and like another woman bought them all.
SPEAKER_03I hope that woman's happy.
SPEAKER_00I do too. They uh gave my mom so much. Yeah. It gave my mom so much happiness. So I hope they went out, but no, I did not try to collect them. What was something your mom was obsessed with?
SPEAKER_03I wrote to my mom today and I said, Is there anything you're like obsessed with right now? And um, she didn't answer, so then I had to call her and she fully disregarded every of my text. But she said that right now she hates that what she's uh what I'm about to say like makes her sound like she's like the oldest living lady on the planet. Because right now she's in her springtime vibes, and she is obsessed not only with her birds in the backyard because spring is coming, more birds are coming to the backyard. The last time I was there, we counted 11 on her app. Oh you can like play an app and it can listen to all the birds around. There were 11 at one point, but she's really excited about her orchids. So she said she's obsessed with her orchids because orchids now they die in the winter and now they're coming back to life. And she said it always gives her hope.
SPEAKER_00I love that.
SPEAKER_03So her orchids, and it's amazing. She has like 15 of them, and she puts them on a table in the winter, and then like they slowly just like start to come back and they're beautiful. And somehow I don't know how she takes care of them, but that's what she's obsessed with right now. And she said they're just beautiful.
SPEAKER_00I love that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Is she a big gardener?
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_00Oh, she's also obsessed with using Chat GPT to remodel to Feng Shui. Fang Shui House.
SPEAKER_03I thought she had a designer. She was working with a designer because she's like, he told me to do this and this. And I was like, who's he? Chat GPT.
SPEAKER_00That's so funny that Chat is a man to her. Chat to me is a woman.
SPEAKER_03Oh, fully a man to her.
SPEAKER_00What is it to you?
SPEAKER_03Nothing.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_03I don't see gender with Chat GPT.
SPEAKER_00You're gender blind.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, I want to talk about my obsession that I'm rocking right now.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yes. This is actually so fun because like we're into spring, we're into colors. Like, tell me. Tell us.
SPEAKER_00So on TikTok, there's been like the fashion boys are talking about the loafer and colorful sock trend. I love it. Which I'm sporting right now.
SPEAKER_03Look at that shiny black loafer with a gorgeous butter yellow.
SPEAKER_00It's just a fun way to like flare up a little out there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_00You know what I mean? I think it's so cute.
SPEAKER_03And it's like subtle enough, too. It's not like, oh, what are they trying to do? There's no design. It's just like a color. Just a basic basic. It's classic.
SPEAKER_00Obviously, you could do the unexpected pop of red, which I think is a great one.
SPEAKER_03I love that as well.
SPEAKER_00Yes, but I just am having so much fun with my colorful socks. And I get them at Uniqlo.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna ask, because there's some places where people love their socks. I always get rec to uh recommended um see. It's a French brand, I think. And they're so expensive.
SPEAKER_00$4.90 for a pair of socks.
SPEAKER_03Do they have so many fun colours?
SPEAKER_00Every single color under like five shades of green, six shades of blue, reds, whites, like yellows, every single color. You can buy, or you can get four for like 15 bucks.
SPEAKER_03I'd say they're unisex too. I'd wear them. Like for anybody, which I love how you do it.
SPEAKER_00I think a woman in a loafer, like a slouchy, colorful sock, yeah, and a cute pair of like denim shorts and a button-down is so adorable.
SPEAKER_03Adorable.
SPEAKER_00I just think it's a really fun way to like this is a very basic outfit. And then the sock and loafer, it's like fun. And the bass, I don't fuck with anything besides a bass Ouijaan loafer. The Bass Ouija loafer, I've always been obsessed with. It is the perfect loafer.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I love them. They're well priced, they last forever. They've ever they've mat, they have patent. Patent. Yeah, every every kind of loafer.
SPEAKER_03I love the one you have on today. I have been trying to find a loafer because of uh love story Carolyn Bissett. I've been trying to find like a loafer similar to the one she wore in the first episode.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um I think they make Ouegions for women. They're it's just a perfect show.
SPEAKER_03I mean Ouegions for women. Like, I support that.
SPEAKER_00Ouegions for women. I love it. Emily, what are you obsessed with?
SPEAKER_03Okay, so as I revealed last week that I am expecting a child, um, the first trimester, and probably actually longer than that, I'd say the first 17 weeks were like hell for me, and I didn't do anything. And pre that, I like love my routine of going to the gym and like just like it makes me a better person to my friends and to my family and to my husband. Um so I couldn't do that. And I've been like, what am I gonna do? I need to start moving. I have to. So I've been getting ads, and I feel like everyone gets ads all the time, but I do trust this brand, the Sculpt Society. Have you heard about the Sculpt Society? Oh Megan Roop is the founder. I think she used to work at Tracy Anderson, and then she branched out and started doing her own thing. And I do believe a lot of it was in person for a while, but now it's all online stuff. It's online sculpt, cardio, and strength. She also likes trains the stars, like Dakota Johnson, she's trained um Emma Stone, Miranda Carr. So, like, she knows her stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But what I love about the app, you can either do it monthly or you can do a year-round pass, which is what I did because I was like, stick to it, Emily. You're finally feeling better. Like, let's go. They have like advanced beginner, but they also have a prenatal and postnatal whole section of what you can do. And it goes week by week.
SPEAKER_00Sorry.
SPEAKER_03So it's a it's an online sculpt cardio and strength classes. It's a subscription. And I there's a lot of things you can get online that you can do these videos, but this, like, I love a schedule. Yeah. And so week by week, she goes through. She also, like, if you're not pregnant, you can do this too. It'll be like, here are the recommended classes for this week. And Monday, I'll give you two. It'll give you a couple options each day. There's advanced, there's beginner, there's dance. You can like really choose what works for you.
SPEAKER_00Are they on demand?
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03They're on demand.
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_03And so they're constantly adding new ones. But so I'm finally on week 25, everybody. And they have a prenatal program. And so it can go through, which I like love. We can like put a little thing up, but it'll just tell me that the videos that I have to do. And it's so nice because I think like this whole process has been so overwhelming. Yes. Knowing that she has hundreds of prenatal videos is great because I can like click whatever.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03But having a schedule that's like, here's what you can just do each day. And it's not crazy. There's like they give you options.
SPEAKER_00I love this repeat your favorite video from the week. Yes. That's an option. And then one day, look at I think it's off or 20-minute walk, stretch, or meditation.
SPEAKER_03Yes, exactly.
SPEAKER_00Oh, this is great because I do think obviously, as someone who has not been pregnant, never will be, uh I imagine you just have this like loss of self.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00You know what I mean? Like you have to, it's such an exercise in sacrifice and selflessness that a small thing like this probably makes a world of difference.
SPEAKER_03A world of difference. And it like the fact that it's taken me 25 weeks to be like, okay, I can finally do something again, like also kills me. Um, but she makes it uh feel like I can do it. 15 minutes. It's 15 minutes, and it was like kind of challenging, but I was like, I need this. Yes, this is what I need. And it just it's not even for like, yes, there's health benefits, but it's like my mind.
SPEAKER_00Right. About how much was a year?
SPEAKER_03It's$189 for the year.
SPEAKER_00Wow, that's great.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And that's shocking to me. Right? I I don't understand. They must have a lot of people signing up. They also, I do have like some um influencers that I follow will give you like a discount on the first two or three months. Got it. Um, but you have to buy monthly then. And I was like, I'm just gonna do it.
SPEAKER_00I'm just not gonna love that. Yeah, I'm all about taking care of yourself.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I'm gonna get so strong.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I love this. I'm so excited about our guests today.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, I'm freaking for our guests today.
SPEAKER_00We are so obsessed with Chrissy Downey.
SPEAKER_03I obsessed.
SPEAKER_00Obsessed. She is a content creator who cooks. Um, but I am obsessed with her because of the today show. Yes, you're she is a food stylist at the today show, and she's pivoted now to being on air talent. Yeah. And she's amazing.
SPEAKER_03I love all of her recipes. Her TikToks are great, and it just like makes you feel like you can really like do something nice and treat yourself to a nice meal without like really going crazy.
SPEAKER_00She makes cooking like accessible and fun and low stress.
SPEAKER_03Like, she's just like chill. She's like, let's just do it.
SPEAKER_00So excited to talk to her. Yeah. We'll be right back.
SPEAKER_03We are here with Chrissy Downey. Chrissy, we're obsessed with you. Thank you guys. Welcome. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for having me.
SPEAKER_03I'm so excited. I first came across you on TikTok. You were making a fried olive recipe. Yes. I do a few of those. I it was like I couldn't have liked and saved faster and sent it to Kyle faster. Incredible. Um what is your philosophy behind your TikTok videos and when you're cooking recipes?
SPEAKER_01So my philosophy with cooking and my TikTok videos is kind of the same. And it's that like it should be casual and fun. It's so much more about like gathering people together, drinking, eating. Like the way the food tastes really doesn't matter. Like it does. People are never people might leave and like on the way home be like, that was not that great. But like if it was a fun night, they won't. It was fun. Do you know what I mean? And so it should be fun. Like, even on weeknight stuff, I throw in like weeknight stuff, entertaining stuff, and people, and I totally get it. Like, I grew up with two working parents who like did not want to cook dinner when they came home from work. And I have had a corporate job where I did not want to come home and and cook. But there is like an element of this kind of fun thing you get to do at the end of the day that's like necessary and can be fun. Like you have to eat, you might as well have fun with it.
SPEAKER_03You know, I love when you do like meals for one sometimes or like smaller meals because like it's not like you have to have a frozen, you can actually have like a good meal for one person where you don't feel like, oh my God, I just have all this food. I've to eat it for 10 days.
SPEAKER_01And you like deserve it. Yeah, you know what I mean? I think people are so they almost like lean into being like, Oh, I'm so like busy. Yeah. And I I some oftentimes they really are that busy, but there is a way where you can make yourself like a nice meal at the end of the night and enjoy it and like watch, you know, your reality TV with like a nice meal, even if you're just one. Like, I think that's the thing too. There's so much about like single people on the internet. And I think sort of an everyday thing that single people do is like not eat a nice dinner unless they're with other people. Yes. And it's just this kind of way that's like, no, no, no matter what your circumstances are, what you're doing, like you can make yourself a nice meal. You can make it for people, but you can also just make it for yourself. And like it doesn't have to be lean cuisine or whatever. Whatever people eat these days.
SPEAKER_00Also, like low stress but big reward. Like your food at the end of your TikToks. They're so beautiful and they're so colorful and they just like you. They really do feed you in the multiple meetings of it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like it should be a nice thing to enjoy. People are so into like the aesthetics and the clothes and whatever. And I'm kind of like, food can be part of that. Yeah, it's like a fun thing we get to do. You and you have to do it, you know, like you have to tap in at some point to what you're eating every day. So, like, you might as well have fun and not worry too much about it. So that's kind of my approach with cooking and the videos, is like people are always like, Can I do this? I'm like, honey, you can do whatever you want. Like, if you prefer this type of cheese or that type of cheese, like people are always like with the olives, they're like, Can I do this with feta? I'm like, uh, I sure can.
SPEAKER_03Like, who am I to say no? You know, it makes people feel crazy if they're like, oh my God, I'm changing the recipe a little. And they're like, they're like, I'm like, pop off.
SPEAKER_00How has it been building this TikTok community for you? Because you have almost 200,000 followers, over 3 million likes. It's amazing. Thank you.
SPEAKER_01Thank you so much. I know it's been really interesting. I about a year ago, I was like, well, so you know, I'm a food stylist like in my day job, and I have been for I went to culinary school seven years ago. And so I'm so used to cooking other people's stuff, which is really fun. Like, I enjoy that. But I was like, wow, I I really need to like be more creative in my own things. So I was like, I could try and make some little videos and see what happens. And it kind of just happened. And I was like, oh, I think I can like do this one day. Did it happen quickly? Sort of. So I had I started probably a year ago, right now. So I mean, yes, because some people do this forever and like it's really hard. Um, but I had a few videos like the olives did really well. I have this like sweet potato that like I can't shake it. The sweet potato is like literally my like, you know, when Carrie Bradshaw has like saltines over the stove, like the sweet potato is my version of that where I'm like, let me just put all this slap on a plate and like call it dinner. And it's like every day I get 30 comments on it. Like, I cannot shake this potato. I know, like it will won't go away, but that's okay. I love it. And so yeah, you I kind of had a few like do really well. And then I think just you know, I'm kind of humorous, like I'm not the funniest gal in the world, but I I don't take it that seriously. And I think people respond well to that. Like I said, like so many food people on TikTok are kind of like strict, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they're like they have to fit into something too. Like you're being just yourself. Like, if you're trying to be funny, people be like, that girl's not gonna be like, it's not working.
SPEAKER_01If you're like try less, yeah. So yeah, I think just you know, being myself, honestly, has worked out. And I'm very lucky that I cook for work and like think about food all day long. So when I see something at work and I'm like, oh, I would do it differently. Maybe I would do it this way, I can like go home and try it. So I get ideas all day.
SPEAKER_03Do you record yourself doing a recipe that you've already tried? Or just sometimes it's like brand new?
SPEAKER_01Nine out of ten times it's brand new.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's either something-I could not do that.
SPEAKER_01And well, so I usually say like I make this all the time. Yeah, genuinely, it is sometimes like something that my mom made growing up. Like I grew up eating, like I'll always say that. Yeah. But a lot of times I'll just say, like, I've never done this, and like we'll just see how it goes. And so people are always like, Do you have a recipe? And I'm trying to be better about writing things down and sharing it. But nine out of ten times, I'll just kind of have an idea in my head of a meal or like a dish or something, and then I'll just kind of do it. And you'll see, like sometimes I edit it out because I feel like it looks like annoying me, like tasting every five minutes. But I usually keep it in where I'll be like, uh it needs more of this or that or whatever. So the whole process. Yeah, I'm usually just winging it.
SPEAKER_00I think there's been this common thread with the people we've been interviewing on the show, is that why why we're interviewing them is actually their side hustle. Yeah. And I think that's really cool. Like, yeah, including us. Yeah, totally. We have real jobs, just some NBC girlies with a side hustle.
SPEAKER_01Yes, exactly.
SPEAKER_00So, what was it like? Because as you said, you were food stylist for the Today Show, and now you're on air talent for them.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00And how is that how did that come to be?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So everybody's been so kind to me at the Today Show. Right. You know, like it's kind of embarrassing at a show where it's like such like a sort of, I don't know, high-end like media show where people like see talent every day. Like they don't, you know what I mean? They can kind of spot a good one from a bad one or whatever. And you're like, oh, I'm making my little olive videos. Like it's kind of shameful. Um, but everyone's been so, so nice to me. And we had in January a cancellation, like a real it was a Monday. We had a guest on a Tuesday, and there was a last minute, like they they fell down a flight of stairs or something and like got injured, like something serious. Yeah, no, I was like, no, it's curious. Um yeah, something happened. They couldn't come. And one of our senior producers called me and was like, I think you can do it. Like, do you have a recipe? A fun secret is the recipe that I made my first time, I had never made before. I was like, this is what you do. Yeah, because I had had the idea for it, and like they were all components of things that I've done a bunch, and I knew they would all come together. Right. But I only had a day and was trying to think of something good, and I had had this idea and was like, I don't have time to test this. Like, I'm just rocking it. So I had never made that. Oh my god. It was a vodka sauce pastina. Oh yeah. Yeah, I love pastina. So I made, I know it's so good. So over the summer, I made like a I was calling it like a summertime pastina using like fresh corn and tomatoes because pastina is such like a winter thing. Yeah. So over the summer, I was doing a kind of fun summer thing with it and making it all the time. And then in the winter, I had this idea where I was like, I should just do this with like vodka sauce and like sausage or something and make it wintry, but not necessarily soup vibes, like more pasta, but still sort of that like creamy pastina. So, anyways, yeah, I I did that the first time and I had never made it, and thankfully they liked it.
SPEAKER_00Amazing.
SPEAKER_01I also think they're all ravenous, they've been up since 2 a.m. Exactly. They're so and I also am so like lucky. I know what they like and I know what they don't like. Like sometimes, you know, we'll have a recipe or something, and for example, like Craig hates peanut butter, and like people don't know, like who doesn't like peanut butter? You know what I mean? Like if it's not if it's not an allergy, like most people like it. So when there's something with peanut butter, we're like, oh, not gonna like this one, then whatever. So I kind of know their preferences, so I was lucky to I'm like, they're gonna like this. Yeah, and they they keep asking me back, so I think it went well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that is so cool. I'm the biggest Today show fan. He is meeting every morning. Yeah. When when you popped up, I was like, oh my god, yeah, I know. It was so cool.
SPEAKER_01I honestly like feel really lucky that they have been doing this, and all the senior producers have been so supportive and good to me. So yeah, I really am lucky.
SPEAKER_03I also was so jealous be during the heated rivalry craze when Connor's story came, and like all of a sudden you were there and he was there, and there were two to melts. I was like, No, like that was me, and I was jealous.
SPEAKER_01Like that that day also, I I had like food poisoning or something the night before. And so I called Maddie and Allison, like the two girls on our team, and I was like, You guys, like, I will be there at eight o'clock. Which, like, normally I get there before the sun comes up. And I was like, I if I am not there at eight o'clock, like come to my apartment and get me drinking. Like I am, I I am not missing this. And like they didn't watch the show at that time. So, like, this was like my thing. And I got this. And I was like, they can't do it if I'm not there. Those two, those two I trust with my life, but I'm like, they they can't like do this properly, they don't understand like the bread goes in the tub. You know what I mean? Like, they're not gonna get it. So yeah, I like clawed myself out of bed and was like, I am here. And we are doing this. And then we I hugged funeral story. So it was worth it. I know it was like so fun. It was amazing. Yeah. He was lovely.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god.
unknownObsessed.
SPEAKER_00We want to talk a little bit about New York City as we are big New York City girlies. You and you cook in your apartment.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Which is like space is so limited. Yeah. What are five cooking tools that you think everybody should have in a small apartment? And like where do you have a recommendation for each one?
SPEAKER_01So okay, five that you should have. One thing that I'll say that you shouldn't have, even though I don't swimming in them, are single use tools. Things you can only use for one thing. Yeah. So like my favorite single use tool is a cherry pitter. Oh my gosh. You know what I mean? Like you don't need it. But I but I have one because I like it. It makes me happy. But if you see a tool and it's single use, like how many times are you really doing that? Just like use a knife. So that's kind of always my my tip. But for things that you do need, oh, that's so hard. I would say a microplane does a lot of things. I love my microplane. Don't get any other, don't get a, you know, you don't for the average cook, you don't need like a box grater. You don't need like anything else that like greats stuff. Just get a microplane. Anything that you kind of need, you can do it with a microplane. Yeah. So do that. A microplane. I would say a Dutch oven because it looks pretty on the stove. Yes. And you can pick so many colors. You can make your own. And you can use it. Like I use my Dutch oven for even things that aren't going in the oven or things that just like aren't necessarily people would be like, you need a Dutch oven for this. I use it for everything because I keep it on my stove because I don't have room for it anywhere else. Yeah. And it like looks pretty and doesn't feel like, oh, she has dishes on the stove. What color is yours? Okay, so mine is red, which isn't really my favorite, but I got it at the La Crusade outlet. I see those TikToks about people going there. Yeah, and they have limited colors. So I would probably do something like I love like a yellow or something a little different, but the red was what they had at the outlet, and I was like, perfect.
SPEAKER_00That's a periwinkle one at the outlet. It's very red. It's really so pretty.
SPEAKER_01I know sometimes they get like good ones. There was like a time where there was an artichoke. They called the color was called artichoke. Yes, yes, yes. I don't know if it ever hit the outlets, so I was like, okay, I guess I'm going red. So it's fine. It's cute, whatever. Um, my apartment's very like soft tones, and then there's this like red unexpected bottle. Yeah, everyone needs it. Everyone needs it. It's like a lipstick. So yeah, I like my Dutch oven. Um, other tools. What do I use? Okay, I use like a mini food processor, which feels like it would take up a lot of space. It doesn't. It's kitchen aid. It's like, I don't know, six inches tall-ish. I make salad dressings in it. I like the olive thing. You can like whip the olives so they're easier to put in. It sounds like something you wouldn't use a lot, but I find a ton of use for it. I crush up nuts in it. Like, I think a big food processor intimidates people sometimes. So they're like, what is this? Like machine. Yeah. You know, it's like a cockpit where you're just like, what are these buttons? Like, what's going on? But the mini one, like you just close the lid and press it, and you can do so many things with it. It's like very high. I love it.
SPEAKER_03Sometimes instead of that, I'll use an immersion blender. Yeah. Which I is like one of my desert island items is an immersion blender.
SPEAKER_01I would honestly put that, like, especially for a winter. Yeah. An immersion blender. Like, I mean, everybody has a regular blender for like smoothies and stuff. You can always put your soup and stuff in there, but if it splatters, like you literally have a third degree wear. So the immersion blender makes it easy. Yeah, like in the winter, I'd put an immersion blender on my my city list of things to have. And people like surprisingly love to use it. Like pe people have them. You would think it's kind of an it's not as niche as you would think it is. Like people often ask me about using it for soups and stuff in the winter.
SPEAKER_03I totally scenes like it's just easier to sort of like using my wrist. Yeah. I know. I know. It's really hit or miss. Once you start, you can't stop. Yeah. Once you get in there, that first soup, you'll be like, oh no.
SPEAKER_00I can't wait.
SPEAKER_03I'll do this every day. One of my um favorite things is my um mandolin. A mandolin. Oh yeah. I am obsessed. And I know so many people are like very scared of a mandolin because people like have cut their fingers off. Yeah. And once it happens once, I feel like people are like, I'm never doing that again. Yeah. I have not been cut. Yeah. So I'm still in it. I like love it. I love it.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I've been cut by a mandolin. I actually, my like best friend, I catered her bachelorette, which like was a lot. But it was fun. Um, but I like sliced my thumb on the mandolin in the morning. Like I was making avocado toast and was like, I'm putting thin radishes. Oh my gosh. Like, these girls are gonna think I'm such a chef, which I am. I don't know, I don't know what I was under a bus. And like sliced my finger. It was like literally, it was like one person saw and I was like, don't say a word. I have a first aid kit in my I like literally checked knives in my suitcase to go to this bachelorette, and I keep a first aid kit in it, and I was like, I'll have this under control in five minutes. Don't tell anyone about this. There was there's no blood. Like I cleaned everything. So yeah, when it happens, you're for sure scarred, but just like be careful.
SPEAKER_00No, in your subsect, you talk about traveling alone. Yeah, and I'm also a big solo traveler. I love it. What was it like that like to dine out alone when you travel? I think people it's intimidating for people.
SPEAKER_01Totally. I think people think it's like embarrassing, or like people, like I think people think like, oh, I'm so sad I have no one with me or whatever. Yeah. And it's really not. People, first of all, respect it. They're like, like, have you ever seen just like a fabulous? I mean, I'm I'm none of the things I'm about to describe, but have you ever seen just like a fabulous older woman with like with like lots of jewelry or something, and you're like, oh, she has lived, and like she is here having a meal. Like, people respect when you're dining alone. Yes. And I honestly think it's like really fun to not share with anyone sometimes. Like the most fun thing about food usually is sharing it with someone, but you can kind of lean into that with yourself. Like, I my first like really it wasn't the first time I went on a solo trip, but it was the first time I did more than like five days. So, like three years ago, I went to Poland, Austria, and the Czech Republic for three weeks by myself. Wow. All because I wanted to do a sound of music tour and like didn't need anyone's job. Like, I didn't have anyone who was the right person to go with. You would have been perfect. Let's do it again. Like because alone was fun. Yeah, because if someone wasn't like the right level of fan, I would have been annoyed. Yes. I'd be like, Why are you here?
SPEAKER_00Like I would have gone in a costume. I did, yeah, I did.
SPEAKER_01And the woman was like, and I was the only person alone on the tour. And the woman was like, I did a dress that kind of looked like play clothes. It was like a hill house, like green. It like looked like curtains. And the woman was like, Are you in costume? And I was like, Yeah. Um, but it was so fun. Like I went and got schnitzel and like and it was fun, it was during December, so it was like Christmas market season. So the fun thing about being on a trip alone eating is there were a lot of nights where I was like, I'm kind of not hungry. Like, I kind of just want like a sausage and a beer from like a stand at the Christmas market.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And you don't feel the pressure to like disappoint someone who's like, Well, we're we're here, we gotta do this thing. Right. Right. You can lean in as much. Exactly. And like you can skip a meal or go all out for one or like stumble into somewhere. And if you're just one, like they'll usually take you. Like that's a fun tip in New York, too. If there's a restaurant that's really hard to get into, like you'll probably get in if you're by yourself. That's a very good tip. Yeah. So like if you really want to try something just because like you actually want to try it, I know it doesn't sound like the most fun to try like a hot new spot on a Friday night by yourself, but you can usually get in. Like they'll usually be like, yeah, so I tried Missy. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, you're so good. And they they at the counter. Yep. Yeah. They have like a great system for a solo diner.
SPEAKER_03I do think that some restaurants or restaurants just in general, I think that restaurants should, if you're dining solo, sometimes you want to try a lot of things. Yeah, I do think they should do some sort of menu. That's not just like, oh, here's your menu, you're buy yourself a solo menu. But like smaller portions. Like, I don't want to go to Don Angie and get the pinwheel by myself. That's yeah, 20 pinwheels.
SPEAKER_00What? Because of Ozempic.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they're doing the reduced menus. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Right. Yes. And now you'd think it'd be half off. No, no, no. It's the same price.
SPEAKER_01It's not more. Yes. But like I'll pay it if I'm at the bar by myself. And like I want to just try one lasagna pinwheel. I'd be like, sure, I wouldn't wouldn't even think twice about it.
SPEAKER_00I solo travel quite a bit, and I said to my friend once that I've every single solo trip I go on, at least one meal is paid for by people near me. So I just started talking to them.
SPEAKER_01I know, and they like want to, you know, I went to Sardi's after a Broadway show like a couple weeks ago, and they have a really good chocolate martini. So I got a chocolate martini and a bowl of French onion soup, like after a show. I was with friends at the show, but it was like my friend was with her high school friends, and I was like, you guys go to dinner, like it's okay, I'll I'll see myself out. So I was like, ah, I'll stop and get some soup. And like the same thing happened. Like the people next to me were so nice, paid for like my whole check. And it just amazing. When you're dining out alone, like people are curious, like, what are they doing? And sometimes I'll bring a book if I'm like, we don't need to like do this whole song and dance. Right. But usually you're kind of open-minded to like who's around and whatever. We've we've lost the art of like being present. So it's kind of fun to be alone. And solo travel is like a great opportunity to eat alone and do kind of your own thing with no one telling you what to do. I love it.
SPEAKER_02I love it.
SPEAKER_03You also have been you love Paris. I feel like do you have some good tips about like is there a place, something you recommend a solo traveler do in Paris?
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's such a hard question. Like so many things.
SPEAKER_03I feel like you're not going to be able to do that.
SPEAKER_01Honestly, the thing about solo travel is walk. Yeah. Like I know that's kind of always the tip, it's kind of cliche. But like if you're alone in Paris, and that's another thing, the Paris restaurants that are hard to get into, you usually get in alone. And like there are since COVID especially, like Paris restaurants are hard to get in. You used to be able to like kind of stumble in somewhere and eat. It's like not the scene anymore. Um, you can get in if you're alone, like nine out of ten. Sometimes they're like, no. Um so French. And I know, like, I feel like in Paris, my main thing is like try to like say hello in French. Yeah, totally. They're nicer when you do.
SPEAKER_00You know, I was like, And then they'll hit you with a hello.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they'll they'll be like fine. Yeah, and it's fine. But they're like, okay, we're trying. You tried. Yeah. So yeah, I know. And I feel like my favorite thing to do in Paris alone or with people is go to there's a cheese shop that Ina Garten, like, not personally, but introduced me to. She's never told me to go there, but she's told me to go there, you know, through the screen. Um, it's called Bartholomew. Okay. Um, I go like there, another Ina favorite, but I discovered it before. She told me about it. Um, Pauline. It's like really good bread. Um, go get some wine and like go sit in a park. Yeah. You know, people always want restaurants, and I love restaurants just as much as the next person. But like, that's a full meal there, and you can sit all day. Go to a park, get some wine. There's no like open container, like they don't care about that. So chill. You know, just like and if with a cigarette and a cigarette, like a and like a really thin cigarette. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I did so many shrooms and bites at midnight to the Eiffel Tower. It's a place to do it. No one's on there anything.
SPEAKER_01Everyone has a wine key. Also, like if you don't have a wine bottle opener, like someone on a blanket nearby has one. Like the culture is just so like we're all here smoking cigarettes and drinking, doing whatever, drinking and eating.
SPEAKER_00This could be a complete lie. But tell us. There's something about like most New York, sorry, most Parisian apartments come with a wine cellar.
SPEAKER_01Oh, yeah, like in the basement. Yes. Yes, yes, yes, yes. God, I need that to be true. International. That's where we get all of our. Oh, yeah. Yes. No, yeah, they're like in the basement of these apartments or something. Like, I've totally seen that too. And I feel like I've read some like murder mysteries set in Paris that like the Paris apartment?
SPEAKER_00Yes!
SPEAKER_02Oh my god.
SPEAKER_01And I'm like, Yeah, it's like me being like, I read an article about that, and it was a TikTok. But yeah, I've like in books and stuff, there'll be like a thing about like, well, there was this wine cellar in the basement. Oh, we have to read this one. I've read other Louis 2's. I haven't read that one.
SPEAKER_00I think it's one of our better ones.
SPEAKER_01Uh, do we have it?
SPEAKER_00Nope, Kindle. Um, we'll be right back with your obsession, but what's one word you'd use to describe it?
SPEAKER_01Jesus. It's two words, but one concept. Okay. Turkey sandwich. Ooh, I love a sandwich. I'm like Indian. I love a turkey sandwich. I'm excited. Okay. We'll talk, we'll talk. Okay, we'll be right back.
SPEAKER_00We're back.
SPEAKER_01We're back.
SPEAKER_00We're gonna be talking about turkey sandwiches.
SPEAKER_01Sort of. Okay.
SPEAKER_00What are you obsessed with?
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'm always really obsessed every summer when I'm going to the beach, like trying to think of a fun beach snack that's not a turkey sandwich. Oh my god. So I am not a cold cuts girl. Wow. Which is like really, really hard for me to admit. Like it's so embarrassing. I just don't like them. Like turkey. I like like a real ham, but like deli sliced ham. I'm with you. What about a salami? Love a salami, like like some clear. Yeah, yeah. Like a cured meat difference. Okay, okay, okay. And nothing grosses me out more than like when you go to the beach and everybody has like a soggy jersey mics in their pockets. And then they pull it out like four hours later out of a cooler. There's water from the cooler, like dripping off of it. It's so gross to me. And like I really don't have very many like snobby from their versions. This is like my biggest one. And I'm often so like ashamed of it that if I'm at someone's beach house or something, like my parents, we don't have somewhere we go, but like some I'm always a guest if I'm at someone's like beach house. Yeah. And they'll be like, oh, we're making sandwiches this morning. Like, what do you want yours to be? And I'll be like, oh my god, yes. Um, I'll be like, I'm I'm I'm honestly like, I probably won't eat, like I'll just have chips or something because I don't want to admit that like I don't want your like crusty deli sandwich. Yeah, yes. And they like kid and people, you have like some guy in charge of making all the sandwiches. Better size it. Oh, it's like gross. They like slap things on it, and they're not even doing it right everywhere. They fold the meat over. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Always put the thickest cut tomatoes.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and I'm like, do you make a knife? Like, it even go on a beach sandwich. They make it, yeah. So, you know, like a chicken, I'll do a chicken cutlet and foil, like whatever it is. Last summer on TikTok, I did a series that I called like pool snacks without a pool, because obviously I live in like a shoe box in front of a pool. But I was making all these snacks that would be like amazing for your pool at beach day. So fun, I think. So I'm trying to think of some fun like beach snacks. And then on the Real House I was in Rhode Island this week, which my family my family lived in Rhode Island for like one year when I was in fourth grade, but we never made it to a summer. Like we it wasn't even a full year, it was like September to March. We lived there. And so my sister and I were watching it, and they pull out these like personal pan pizzas with no cheese, which my parents now live in Philly. And so tomato pie is like tomato pie. That's exactly where I went.
SPEAKER_00What is tomato pie?
SPEAKER_01It's like a Philly thing. Yes, where it's like a big, it looks like a Sicilian pizza. It's like a slice of dough pizza with just tomato sauce. There's no cheese. I mean, sometimes there's like a sprinkling of parm. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I like that.
SPEAKER_01It is okay, and it's good, room temp, cold, hot, like morning. That's a part of the it's so good. And so I you have like, you know, them pulling out and they're like, my grandfather's responsible for the pizza chips. And I'm like, I'm making pizza chips this summer. Like pizza chips, pizza chips, but it's a personal pen pizza with no cheese. It's not chip, there's nothing chip about it.
SPEAKER_00And they're all just ripping it apart.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it looks like Ashley, who's like not from Rhode Island, she's like, I don't know what this is. It looks like pizza with no cheese to me. And I'm like, me too, and I like that. Yes, so it's delicious. So I'll be making pizza chips this summer. Like, I don't want your deli sandwich, I want a pizza chip.
SPEAKER_00So what I watched that scene and I was very confused by the base of the pizza chip.
SPEAKER_01What do you mean? Like the dough?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01I think it's just pizza dough.
SPEAKER_00I think it's just pizza dough.
SPEAKER_01Like it's thick like a tomato pie. Yes. It looks like it. I think that it's just it's almost kind of like focaccia style, where it's like thicker. I know. It sounds so good. Yes. And I think just because like there's no cheese, it like keeps better in the sun. I mean color or whatever, but it's just not like cheese everywhere. But I I there's nothing chip about it. It's like totally throwing us all off here. Yeah, yeah. But like I could do something with a chip that feels like pizza, also at the end of pizza. Yeah, it's like an actual chip. Oh, yeah, it has my wheels turning about what I'm making for like a beach day this summer.
SPEAKER_00I like that a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm really into that. I love a beach snack. I think a beach snack is really important. Yeah, yeah. And people don't take it seriously. No, like it's very, it's it's an afterthought for like drinks, chairs, yeah, yeah, turkey sandwich. I'm like, we can we can step up to the flavor. Let's elevate the let's do a little more. Yeah, there's so much more we can do. Oh, and our drinks at our drinks at the beach can improve too. Yeah, let's talk about it. Let's talk about it. Like white cloth, sure. Why not? But like you can you can make little package, you can mix a drink at the beach, bring a cocktail shaker. Absolutely. Stick it in the beach bag.
SPEAKER_03Yes, you can even pre-package things. Like, what do they sell on the beach at Rockaway? They come around selling um nutcrackers. Yes, yes. So you can use more nutcrackers, or just buy a nutcracker at the beach.
SPEAKER_01They're like 12 bucks. Order the Capri Sun pouch. Yes. Yeah. Like have fun with it a little bit. You know, I feel like we don't take this that seriously.
SPEAKER_00I just made the other day, based on a TikTok I saw, which is going to be a drink of the summer, my own celery soda syrup.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00I love celery soda.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yum. And I just made it what brand does celery soda?
SPEAKER_00Um, is it Browns? Yes. It's very much New York fit. And this guy was like, I've never had it until I moved to New York, and I don't drink anymore. So I was like, I need something fun for the summer. And I've been pouring just taking a polar seltzer, pouring into a wine glass, ice. How fabulous. Celery soda thing. And I was like, that's my drink of the summer.
SPEAKER_03If you want to drink, people can just add vodka or something to it. Yes, bring it to the beach. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Herbaceous and it's light, and it just felt like better than a sprite.
SPEAKER_01Yes. You know, at the beach. Absolutely. Totally. Or there's, I wish I could remember her name, but there's a girl on TikTok who makes like, you know, the chef like deli containers. Yes. That like on the bear they're always drinking out of. Yes. And like toxic male chefs. I mean, and me too, but like you're always like, dating him would be if they do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's like, okay, you're toxic. Um, but there's a girl who makes like amazing drinks in those with like a really thick straw that she like punches through the lips. Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_03You can buy them online. There's Amazon. You can buy the whole set. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yes, like I think we should just be having a little more fun with our like ASMRE too. Yeah. Just like oh yeah, and she she uses this like aggressive, like hole punch to like cut a whole lot for her straw. I'm like, it reminds me of like a 7-Eleven Slurpee straw almost. I think that's what I'm like thinking about. Yeah, no, and I just think we can be doing more at the beach. And those girls really inspired me this week.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I loved it.
SPEAKER_01And they were almost competitive about it. My my grandfather's responsible for bringing these here. And I was like, yeah, and you know what he was?
SPEAKER_03Yes. I love that these girls eat on Rhode Island. Like they are not afraid of a snack or a food. They're like, bring it on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they are like just shameless as housewives should be. Yeah, absolutely. As they should. Yeah, they're really making sense. They deserve the world, yeah. And I I love watching the food. It's always ridiculous. Like when they're when their families come over, it's like my favorite thing. I love watching what how they're like, what housewives eat is like my favorite thing. When Kyle's like, what in the Fred Effie Blindstone? They're like on like a mountaintop in like Tuscany or something. I forgot where they were.
SPEAKER_00And Jennifer Killy's like, it was delicious.
SPEAKER_01I know. Like, I would do anything to watch how like reality TV producers deal with food. I love how they always say. What are they eating? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Andy always says that they've like that. Like, always include what they order.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I love when they give their orders. Yes. And they're and it's like, oh, she doesn't like feta. Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you watch Potomac?
SPEAKER_01I watch Potomac like here and there.
SPEAKER_00Okay. This past season killed me. Stacy and Kiara go to lunch. And Stacy's like known to be a little aloof. And she's like, Do you want the barata? And Kiara goes, Oh, no, I don't eat cheese. I'm allergic. And she goes, Oh, okay. We're gonna have the barata.
SPEAKER_02It's amazing.
SPEAKER_01It's amazing. She didn't care. She didn't care. She was getting it no matter what. She wanted the barata. And you know what? Like, stop asking what they want. Yeah. Just get what you do. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. People are like, well, we could share. I'm like, no, we could, but I want this and you're allergic to it, so I'll be getting this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're running out of time. But we want to do a lightning round to get your takes on some hot topics. Simply tell us if you're obsessed or over it.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Three, two, one, go.
SPEAKER_03Justin Bieber.
SPEAKER_01Beyond obsessed. Forever.
SPEAKER_00Memoirs.
SPEAKER_01Memoirs. Very obsessed. My memoir. Guys wearing fluffy little reading glasses. Um, if they're Jonathan Bailey, like, yeah. But you know, you gotta be able to pull it off.
SPEAKER_00Willie Guys did it on the fourth hour the other day. He can do it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01You know, you know, I'll reserve my thoughts just for the sake of professionalism. But yeah, he can do it.
SPEAKER_00Peanut butter cups.
SPEAKER_01Um, obsessed with Halloween time.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01You know? Wow. Like it's seasonal for me. Yeah. Don't need them all the time. He's a year-rounder. Oh, totally fair. Um, laptops. Um like over it. Enjoy your life. You know, a lot of people are over laptops. Yeah. I have a desktop in my apartment. I don't even own a laptop. I thought about that for a long time, but I don't even have one.
SPEAKER_00I guess your phone can do like everything a laptop can do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, be present.
SPEAKER_00Um rebrand.
SPEAKER_01Obsessed. Why not? We're all rebranding every day. Assigned seating at a dinner party. Over it. Really? Yeah. I mean, it depends how many people and how well they know each other. Like if everyone's strangers, yeah. Like maybe if there's tea, tell people where to sit. Yeah. Whatever. But in general, I'm kind of like, let things flow. Let things happen.
SPEAKER_00Eating by candlelight.
SPEAKER_01Oh, obsessed. How delicious.
SPEAKER_00That's such a random one I throw on.
SPEAKER_01Horoscopes. Ah, over it.
SPEAKER_00Double dipping.
SPEAKER_01Obsessed. Whatever.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, who cares?
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Cover was forever ago.
SPEAKER_03I know. We're all fine. Except Kyle does have a cough.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I might have to see him laugh right now.
SPEAKER_03Okay, our last question.
SPEAKER_00Three, two, one. Are you like?
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, yes. Can we be friends?
SPEAKER_02That's what this whole show is.
SPEAKER_03I'll make you fried olive. Yes. Yes. And they'll just order the ham cuddles. Let's make it ham.
SPEAKER_00Thank you so much for being here. Thank you. Chrissy, tell our listeners and watchers where they can find you.
SPEAKER_01You can find me at Across Chrissy's Table on TikTok, Instagram, and Substack.
SPEAKER_00We love the Substack. I know so far.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Chrissy.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for having me.
SPEAKER_03Yay.
SPEAKER_00Thanks for tuning in.
SPEAKER_03Are you obsessed with us? Please like, comment, and subscribe.
SPEAKER_00Bye.
SPEAKER_01Here in the Today Show Kitchen, and Connor's story is here today, so obviously we're making tuna melts. We're starting out with a few cans of tuna, and then we're gonna add some mayo dukes, because that's what Ilya has in his fridge. And we're just gonna eyeball it. Casual, casual tuna melts.
