We're Obsessed With You
Emily Hymes and Kyle O'Donnell are two best friends and late night television producers. When they aren't working, they're texting, DMing, and voice noting each other about everything they're obsessed with – both online and in NYC.
On We're Obsessed With You, Emily and Kyle invite their favorite personalities to dive into the things they can't stop thinking about. This is an interview show about hyperfixations, served with pop culture expertise and just a little bit of brain rot.

Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Emily kicks things off with a recap of her birthing class, where she may have been a little too honest with the instructor. Then, she reveals her latest beauty obsession and Kyle shares his favorite on-the-go game.
Plus, founder of The Shelf, Sloane Kraftsow, drops by the WOWY Offices to talk about how she took her brand from a simple idea to a brick-and-mortar shop in less than a year. She also breaks down how she uses Claude in her business, how she curates inventory, the not-so-fun challenges of entrepreneurship, and her favorite grocery stores in New York City. They close things out with her ~CULT~ obsession and an all-new round of Obsessed or Over It.

This Week's Obsessions:
Emily: Milani Make It Last Setting Spray
Kyle: Monopoly Deal
Sloane: Brand Packaging as a Status Symbol
We're Emily and Kyle. We started as coworkers in late night television and now we're best friends exploring NYC and our FYPs.
SPEAKER_00This is an interview show about obsessions. Ours, theirs, and maybe yours too. Welcome to We're Obsessed With You. Hi Emily.
SPEAKER_03Hi, Kyle. How's it going? It's awesome.
SPEAKER_00Hi everyone. Welcome to We're Obsessed With You.
SPEAKER_03The podcast.
SPEAKER_00The cinematic event. I'm Kyle O'Donnell.
SPEAKER_03I'm Emily Hives.
SPEAKER_00And this is the show where we talk to the people we're obsessed with. About the things they're obsessed with. Yes. How are you, Emily? Give us a baby update.
SPEAKER_03Oh my gosh, it's been a week. The baby is the size of a red panda.
SPEAKER_00Whoa. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I don't know what that means though. Like, do you really know the size of a red panda?
SPEAKER_00Maybe this?
SPEAKER_03That could look like it's in here. Sure.
SPEAKER_00I believe it. Although your doctor has told you you got a big baby.
SPEAKER_03I know. I keep wanting to say big boy, but we don't know if it's a big boy or a girl. It's a big boy. A big thing.
SPEAKER_00Big baby.
SPEAKER_03We should save that and then just hit a button and have that.
SPEAKER_00Big baby. If this show became a morning shock jock show, I would love that.
SPEAKER_04Big baby, big baby, big baby.
SPEAKER_00This is Kai Zone and MZ. Wow. Oh, that's we should just do that kind of episode one day.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, we should. Can we play music too?
SPEAKER_00I we could do sound effects, I think.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, okay, fine, just sound effects. But I'd love to be like, okay, now here's the throwback.
SPEAKER_00Yes. I would love if we just became Delilah.
SPEAKER_03No, Delilah's too like Delilah.
SPEAKER_00I love Delilah.
SPEAKER_03She's a little annoying. Everything's gonna work out.
SPEAKER_00This is a message from Kendra to Scott.
SPEAKER_03I love you.
SPEAKER_00I love you. And remember that red dress? Here is Lady in Red. I loved her.
SPEAKER_03Sometimes there are it's the Ubers on my way home from babysitting, have Delilah on.
SPEAKER_00I didn't know she was still around.
SPEAKER_03Oh, she's still around. Unless we're playing old episodes.
SPEAKER_00No, I I believe it. I just thought radio died.
SPEAKER_03Is she on XM?
SPEAKER_00Or definitely not. I think she is like still doing like satellite.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't know. I hear her.
SPEAKER_00Wow. God, I love her.
SPEAKER_03I don't uh sure. I like us better.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I like us better too. Big baby.
SPEAKER_03So a big baby and big husband and Emily went to a birthing class. Fab. And there were like three other couples. And I learned a few things. First, most people begin labor at night because your oxytocin is so high because you're relaxed. So most people have babies at night or they start the labor process at night, which I thought was interesting.
SPEAKER_00Were you a morning baby or night baby?
SPEAKER_03My mom was in labor with me for 22 hours.
SPEAKER_00Whoa.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um, but I don't know. I just know. So she was talking about how when you start labor, you're at home for a lot of it before you go into the hospital. And usually first-time moms will go in sooner just because they're like, what the fuck is happening? Yeah. Um, so she made us play this game. There were four couples, and each couple had to like roll dice and fill out like almost like what are those fill in the blanks? The um mad libs.
SPEAKER_00Why am I not in this birth in class?
SPEAKER_03So it was like kind of fun. And then so she it says like Mike and I, like you roll, okay, you're at home for six hours, and then you have three hours of pushy. Like you do the whole thing. Oh, okay. And she goes, Okay, so you're at home for six hours before you go to the hospital. Like, what are you doing? And it goes around to all these couples, and one woman's like, Oh, I'll probably, I don't know, like make sure my bag is packed, and maybe I'll like do the dishes. Because the teacher was like, You should do your like normal routine. Yeah. And it gets to me. And I was like, uh scroll TikTok. I was like, I guess I'd watch Bravo. She I was like, maybe I'll sit there and like watch a Bravo episode to calm me down. And I was like, and also like, I'll probably get in a fight with my husband, like right? And then we'll come into the hospital. And she goes, Okay, now moving on to what do you guys think you'll do? But that was the most realistic answer. Besides for Bravo, you cannot tell me that people aren't gonna get in a fight with their husband. I'd be like, You didn't pack it in the bag! Yes, I'm gonna freak out. There's nothing calm it will be happening during the six hours we have to stay at home before going to the hospital.
SPEAKER_00Because I can either the man is going to be either freaking out or be like, you're being away.
SPEAKER_03Or like, I'm gonna go to the bar for a drink.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, like it's fine.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. I definitely think a fight will break out.
SPEAKER_03One thousand percent. That an argument will be happening.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03So um, that's what Mike and I will be doing before I have a baby. Great. Arguing.
SPEAKER_00Great. Um I can't wait.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but it really isn't like the movies. You know, you think your water breaks and you go.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03You don't. Did you know that?
SPEAKER_00I did. I think because I've watched a lot of reality TV where people give birth.
SPEAKER_03Like, I think I think about Courtney Kardashian giving birth all the time.
SPEAKER_00I was thinking about on like Bethany getting married when she uh like her water breaks uh unceremoniously. And she's like, Oh, what is that?
SPEAKER_03Did she have a big water break? Because sometimes it's just a little.
SPEAKER_00I think it was just a little. I don't remember.
SPEAKER_03Well, they were saying it's like not like the movies where it like splashes on the ground.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03It'll just be a little, except it'll keep going. And she's like, So if you're out at the office, it's no problem. And I was like, huh. Well, wouldn't it be if I'm like leaking the rest of the day? Like, I think I'd still have to go home.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Did you know that most of amniotic fluid is urine?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03And that's happen that's a there's a lot of urine inside of me right now.
SPEAKER_00That's so crazy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they've like upped the urine because they're eating more, or whatever it is, like there's more urine in my body right now.
SPEAKER_00Wow. Fascinating.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, the baby is.
SPEAKER_00Are there any actively peeping? Physical changes you feel, or is it this point it's just like I'm big and uncomfortable?
SPEAKER_03I think I'm just like I'm like a little like sore.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03A little hard to get around.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So it'd be nice if someone offered me a seat on the subway when I go home tonight.
SPEAKER_00Someone did offer you the other day and you didn't take it.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah. Because you know why? Because I think I was with you. And if you stand and ice it, it hurts my neck, it hurts my neck.
SPEAKER_00That's right. So someone should be offering me. Offer your seat too. For me and my family. Elderly, disabled, pregnant women, and they're gays. Yes. Okay.
SPEAKER_03That's all I'm asking.
SPEAKER_00Mom Donnie. Um, Emily, what are you obsessed with this week?
SPEAKER_03I am obsessed with, as if you watch this, you know I'm just like such a beauty who like really does such a good job with her makeup.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_03Um, and one of the reasons is I have this amazing setting spray. And I haven't brought it up before because I haven't thought about it, but I realized that I'm running low and I was like, you know what? I'm obsessed with this brand. It's called Milani Make It Last Original. It is waterproof, sweatproof, it's affordable, and it lasts. It's good for like extreme heat and humidity. So I don't wear a lot of makeup, but I still like I spray my face after I put anything on and it lasts.
SPEAKER_00And a setting spray for the uninitiated are what?
SPEAKER_03Once your makeup is on, you put this on and it helps keep everything in place.
SPEAKER_00Oh, so it's like a shellac or something. Correct.
SPEAKER_03But this is, I got it at Target. My friend Sam showed it to me. Uh when we were getting ready, I went to the um Biden White House Christmas party. And it was the first time I used this, and now I've been through a few of them. And it says it lasts up to 24 hours. I don't know if that's true, but it's a like it's a nice like set in the morning, and I feel like it doesn't. By the time I get to the office, sometimes when it's hot and gross, you feel like everything's fallen off your face. I still feel like I got it.
SPEAKER_00I love the phrase fallen off your face. Like I think it's a very 80s thing. Like she came in and her makeup had fallen off her face. I don't know. It's very, it's the video is so funny.
SPEAKER_03It's funny because I've never really thought about it, and I didn't actually think I would have ever said something like that. And I just said that.
SPEAKER_00It's just a it's a funny turn of phrase that I really like.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Or like her face was melting off.
SPEAKER_03Oh, her face was melting off. Yes. Oh my god, totally.
SPEAKER_00I don't know why I just thought of that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, because I said it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true. Guys.
SPEAKER_03So that's what I'm obsessed with. You can get it at Target.
SPEAKER_00Great. And it's affordable.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yes. You can get it at our Shop My. It will take you to Target.
SPEAKER_00I love it.
SPEAKER_03So that's what I'm obsessed with.
SPEAKER_00Good for the summer.
unknownFor the summer.
SPEAKER_03Or you can go makeup free once you get the same.
SPEAKER_00Big baby. Big baby. Um, I am obsessed with some.
SPEAKER_03No, yeah, I haven't asked.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03What are you obsessed with?
SPEAKER_00Thank you, Evelyn. I am obsessed with a little game called Monopoly Deal.
SPEAKER_03Oh, we love Monopoly Deal. This is another good thing for the summer.
SPEAKER_00I'm not going to explain the rules of the game.
SPEAKER_03But just like no monopoly.
SPEAKER_00That is so boring. The it's just Monopoly in card form, and you're trying to get three complete sets of a property. It is a perfect beach game. It is a perfect park game. It is a perfect bar game. I like bringing a deck of cards somewhere to do something.
SPEAKER_03I always travel with it. Mike and I always travel with a deck of cards when we travel.
SPEAKER_00But what do you play?
SPEAKER_03Jin Rumi.
SPEAKER_00See, I need to learn how to play a card game.
SPEAKER_03I don't know. We can teach you.
SPEAKER_00I used to play cribbage, but you need a cribbage board.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I don't play with cards. The cards, or you always should have cards. Yes.
SPEAKER_00And what I like about this Monopoly deal is that I put it in a Ziploc bag and the cards go with me. It's so fun. It's really easy to learn. You can play with two players, you can play up to five players. And I just think it's a fabulous thing that everyone should have.
SPEAKER_03It's faster than the real Monopoly board game.
SPEAKER_00Oh, this that's it. The selling point is that you can play in 15 to 20 minutes, which you usually can.
SPEAKER_03And usually you're like, let's play another game. Let's play another game.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. My sister and I played in Maine a few weeks ago. We were like, best two out of three. Yeah, exactly. Like we just kept going. It's so fun. I love a game like that.
SPEAKER_03One thing about getting like playing cards is I will always bring a set whenever we're traveling, but it is really fun to get a set from all over the country, like every place you go or state or whatever.
SPEAKER_00My grandmother used to collect decks of cards from hotels because they're so common, but also notepads from hotels. I love a notepad from hotels. Which have fallen to the wayside. Don't see them that often.
SPEAKER_03I did just buy a book actually that um it are cocktail napkins from like all the different hotels and stuff.
SPEAKER_00Love. Yeah. So cute.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Everyone, I want to remind you that we are on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yes.
SPEAKER_00You can email us at we're obsessedwithyou at gmail.com. And yeah, whatever.
SPEAKER_03Oh, you could write us.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. You can find our email, our our addresses somewhere. Um I am so excited about our guests today.
SPEAKER_03I'm really excited about our guests today because we love snacks.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03And we're basically having like the snack queen on.
SPEAKER_00Oh, snack queen.
SPEAKER_03The founder queen of like she finds the best, newest, coolest must-try snacks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Sloan Craftsauchi is the owner of The Shelf, which is an online retailer, but also now a brick and mortar, soon to be in New York.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's opening like very soon this August. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, she features up-and-coming brands, cool brands, all the brands you see on Instagram and TikTok that you want to buy, but you can't find anywhere. She has them. She's so cool. She's just fun.
SPEAKER_03Because once they hit Whole Foods, they've already blown out. Yeah, they're too big.
SPEAKER_00She wants to get on the ground floor of the next brand that you're going to be obsessed with. And we went there, we did a big shopping trip recently.
SPEAKER_03We're gonna go back and do another shopping trip.
SPEAKER_00We're obsessed with her, we're obsessed with the shelf. She's great. You're gonna love Sloan. We'll be right back. Sloan Craftsab, we're obsessed with the city. We're obsessed with you.
SPEAKER_02Welcome. Me too. Welcome. Thank you for having me.
SPEAKER_00So we actually had how we came to know you is that you are the owner of the shelf, which is an amazing store in New York City. But we actually met you IRL because of Nate Rosen, former guest. Love you. Um, we did a giveaway with some of his favorite CPGs and his brands.
SPEAKER_03And of course, we asked, like, where can we get snacks to do a giveaway? And he said, We've got to get the shelf.
SPEAKER_02No, I remember he told me that you guys were coming, and I got so excited, and I said, I'm obsessed with them. And he said, You're perfect for them then. And now we are so like, hi.
SPEAKER_00We are so excited to talk to you about just yourself, but also the brand. And we just knew we had to have you on the pod. So tell our listeners about a little bit about you and the shelf.
SPEAKER_02Um, I started the shelf in October in Miami, and I'm just obsessed with grocery shopping. My dream is to have a grocery store, but starting with like a snack pantry. Um, when I was younger, I was always ordering things online, and everything I loved wasn't ever at the grocery store. And my stepmom would literally drive to every single place. Like she, when I got my and when I got my license, she looked at my dad and looked at me and she was like, Here, you're getting a credit card and you're gonna go grow shopping for yourself because you're just too difficult. And that was because every week I was obsessed with something, and then the next week I wasn't. And by the time I actually got to Whole Foods from like being on Amazon, it was just like, I don't care about it anymore, throw it away. So it kind of like started that. And when I mer moved into my first New York City apartment, I was always ordering new things again. And I felt like the best, like the only way to try things was in 12. And when I hated it, it was a waste. My doorman loved it. Yeah, of course. But I hated it, and I was like, oh my God, there has to be a way to do like single serve discovery and trial. So I launched it with a cart and moved home to Miami and did like 25 events, like at Reserve Fidel and like a bunch of wellness studios. Realized it definitely wasn't a wellness studio thing, sadly, because I was like, Oh, this is like a cool aesthetic, but it wasn't the shelf, and like the shelf is like very much loud and like me and like silly and flirty and cute, I guess.
SPEAKER_00It's the best place in New York.
SPEAKER_02We spent so long in there. Yeah, I love the best. I loved the guy. But what else? I'm trying to think. But it's kind of just how it started. And then when I was able to do a five-day pop-up, it went really well in Olita and there was a snowstorm, and I was like, oh my, it's gone so well despite like the weather. Like, I want to extend it. And like the pop-up company emailed me that the person that they had signed up was they they canceled. So I was able to have it for six more weeks, and then I extended another six weeks, moved to another location, and then I did a two-week thing at Juice Press, and now I'm opening a permanent store.
SPEAKER_03That's amazing. I went like full speed, but good for you. Wait, I want to go back to like when you were in high school and your stepmom was driving you around. Like, what was a snack you were looking for then? Like, what was something that had to be Magic Spoon, which wasn't like my thing.
SPEAKER_02And when we when she got magic spoon, I was like, oh like I'm over it. I don't care. Now it's like everyone was like, my dad was like, You're eating that. Yeah. Like, this is over. Like, I'm into Catalina Crunch, which was nowhere.
SPEAKER_00And then like well, when we talked to you at the store, you talked about how basically you just wanted these things yourself. And that's kind of your research of the brand. I think it's so cool. Can you walk us through your selection process?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like how are you doing it when you stock? Well, I mean, I get a lot of inbound now, which is nice. But like I the stuff that I'm obsessed with and want, I'm doom scrolling. I wish it was a cooler answer. No, but it's like the way I found you at three in the morning and I DM duping, like, I need you on my shelf. Like, but it's the packaging that really gets me. And the better for you, I would never like say that it's healthy or like it's like a cleaner version of something. Sure. And like a nostalgic feeling of something you ate when you were younger. Because I want the kid in the candy store experience. So that's it. And it started with like it, your brand not being in Whole Foods, like is like the criteria, but now it's kind of like there's like a stamp of like trust when a brand is in Whole Foods that there needs to be some like level of that in the store. So we had like saws and I don't remember what else, like to like help with that. But usually it's like very young brands. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It's so the kid in the candy store feeling really is the shelf. Like, yeah, I feel like we were nice. We were manic when we were in there.
SPEAKER_03And I do think brands have gotten so clued into like you have to have something aesthetically pleasing. Like that. So brands are in on it as well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Which I think is helpful. 100%.
SPEAKER_00And I also think you're reacting to food trends like in real time, whether that be flavors or like a health ingredient or something like that.
SPEAKER_03Well, you must see it doom scrolling. Like, you must see, like, oh, I'm seeing a lot of something. Yeah. Like gummies or something.
SPEAKER_02Everyone's like talking about fiber right now and like protein. I'm like, fiber's been a thing. Like, do you remember the Gigi crackers? Like, I like remember thinking, like, oh my god, I'm gonna be so skinny from this. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And like that was cardboard, it hurt like swallow. And now, like, fiber's in Poppy and like Olipop and all these other like fun ways. And it's like so cool to see.
SPEAKER_00It's such a marketing um tactic.
SPEAKER_03How long do you keep things in your store, like shelf life-wise? Like, do you realize, like, okay, now this is getting too popular, let's move on from it.
SPEAKER_02Well, we have friends like join for like 90 days, and then after the 90 days, like I kind of see if it's working or not. Yeah. And because it was a pop-up before, it was like a different situation. I just carried it on until we sold through. But now it's 90 days, and then after that, like you are either like an evergreen product or it's just like time for you to like you've already expanded. Yeah, you can graduate.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you know, like you've you're everywhere, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Also, just from a it's middle school, right? From a um business standpoint, it makes so much sense because then it's like, oh, in 90 days, a customer can come back and have a complete new, different experience with products.
SPEAKER_02Well, I feel like every week we have something new. Yeah. So that's great. Like you can join at any time, kind of. I just like don't unbox you until like that Sunday. And it makes it like, okay, like next week is something new. And I get bored in there.
SPEAKER_03Like, I don't know. But like on the business side of it, like learning like how to track all of that, like and all these systems that you have. You always been good at that, or is it something you had to learn as you like started this?
SPEAKER_02I feel like I'm like so unorganized in like my own life, but like when it comes to my work, I'm like really like on yeah, and then Claude, obviously. My best friend and my co-founder. Um like it's just like doing automations for me right now. I need to learn how to do that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't we don't even know how we could utilize it. My husband's like so mad.
SPEAKER_02He's like, You need to use Claude in your everyday life.
SPEAKER_00Yes, how do you use it for the business?
SPEAKER_02Well, every morning I have it go through my emails and like brief me on things. It will go through like basically the inventory I have. It tells me like just like when I should be worried about a product, like good shelf life. I have like a whole sheet. Oh my god. And like just checking an alternative, like tell me. That's amazing. It goes through my Shopify, which is like my favorite thing. Yeah, God.
SPEAKER_00But so how big is your team?
SPEAKER_02It's just me right now, but like you've done so cool. I know I like need to hire, but I like like no, yeah, like you're doing it.
SPEAKER_03Like you don't, and you're like doing the designs for everything too.
SPEAKER_02Like, like I need design help though. So if you have any opinions, let me know.
SPEAKER_03You showed us some of the designs when we saw you, and they were so great. Like you have a vision, and it's like amazing.
SPEAKER_00Well, what you just did is something I wanted to talk to you about. Is that on your social media you are calling out for brand recommendations, or when you're trying to find a location, you said, I'm from Miami, is the shelf girl in New York, a British village girly, a West Village girl. I love how you interact with your life. Oh, that makes me so happy.
SPEAKER_02I mean, like the brand is me, and like I know that a lot of people have a lot to say about founder-led stuff, but like I don't know, it's just it's like a my community is like everything. I've felt like a good one, and I love the feedback I get. So it's like great. So my god. And all the people that I have hired to like work like the cashier has been from Instagram. So really it has helped me a lot. Yeah. I mean, yeah. I mean, I feel like that's how people meet so many people now. They're like, Oh, I found you from a friend of a friend. And I'm like, Oh, that makes me feel like you're a little trustworthy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, well, even when we were in the store, I feel like a bunch of your friends ran exactly. We're in the neighborhood, we're buying stuff. Like, I feel like you created such a community anyway of people. It's been so good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I need to open again, everybody. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00Tell us about the brick and mortar location.
SPEAKER_02Yes, it's in Greenwich Village. That's what I found out. And I wish I could say West Village, um, but it's not. It's right next to Culture Froyo and Madison Fair. There we go, yeah. So there'll always be lines. Yeah, yeah. There's always lines, and like that was like the biggest selling point. And right now we're just working on getting it open and like elevating the brand a little bit with like some stainless steel to like mix with the pink, stripes, pretty, but still keep like the kid and the candy store experienced. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03What challenges have there been that like you kind of had to deal with on your own where you're like, What how do I do? Do you go to Claude? Like, how do you deal?
SPEAKER_02I obviously go to my dad a lot. He's like my like my free therapist. Um, and Claude too, but like challenges like with the store bills out, or just in general? In general, like I mean, I ended up having to pay the last tenants like permits out and like bills, which was like a complete surprise to me. Like, and that was something I didn't plan for. You would know that I was gonna go to like some fun striped bonding or something. But um, but like the storm was like a huge one. I lost so many packages and inventory, and so many like other brands like were like we can't resend, like emerging and they're so small. Yeah, and just like challenges like that, where it's like I want to help you, but like I need some help too in a way. So it's like hard figuring out that balance, I guess. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03We at late night with Seth Myers, we do bowls of uh food in all of the green rooms, and I like use stores like yours to like figure out what I should put in my bowls because I don't I want guests to come in and be like, I don't want them to just see like Doritos. I love a Dorito, but I don't put Doritos in the bowl. Yeah, I want them to be brand new. Oh my god, now I'm like stressed. What do I put in? I the pocket lattes, okay. Um, which are always out of stock, so they're actually hard, but they're really cute. They're just like you can get different types of lattes, but like almond lattes, and it's a chocolate bar, so you can use it. Okay, what? A latte? Yeah, pocket lattes, and there's caffeine in there. Oh, I didn't know that. Okay. Yeah. So we have post-its there if you want to take a note. That's what we're gonna do. We're gonna get a DM for maybe more things. Some of them to your point are so small, and like we don't have big budgets to like spend on this. So it's like what works for these people? I don't want to take advantage of any of these brands, but it's Want to highlight them and like also be cool. Yeah. So I use your store a lot of like way, what's there? I love that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, like I found like a bunch of like grocery stores follow me, which is like cool. And like I've never been to Gelson's, it's in California. Oh, yeah. And they've been like stocking the store from the shelf. Someone told me that, and I was like, No way, I need to go. Oh my god. That's amazing.
SPEAKER_03What's your favorite? Yeah, we love a grocery store. We love grocery stores. Like, what's a like a your favorite grocery store? Happier. I love happier. I have a number. Oh, yeah. Happier grocery. Yeah, it's down grocery. Yes. It's now. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I have no clue.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. It's so good. People love it. And I feel like people do compare it to the Meadow Lane. Is that? But Meadow Lane, some people say is not really a grocery store so much. It's like more prepared foods.
SPEAKER_04Oh, interesting.
SPEAKER_03I guess we'll take that up.
SPEAKER_02I've never been to either. Really? You have to go. It's like they're like that's like my fun activity. Yeah. My friend just moved here from New York and she was like, which grocery stores are we going to? I'm like, um, Butterfield, Medalane, Ories. We're going everywhere. We're close to Butterfield here. I know.
SPEAKER_03Dog cakes.
SPEAKER_00We love, we just love all grocery stores. I know.
SPEAKER_03I love to see how they're sucked. It's so different in New York versus like growing up in Florida. I grew up in Florida and Orlando. And like a Publix. Right. Like it's huge. And like I don't find that there's anything fun and different. You're not finding new brands there. And the lighting. It's like not a don't. We're not doing videos in public. No, never. And then coming to New York where everything's so much smaller. Like, just but I do love a pub. I like going back and going to a public sometimes just for like the classics. Yeah. Doritos. I love cold fish, honestly.
SPEAKER_00I'm like, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Wait, no, I haven't. Delicious. Oh, I need to get that.
SPEAKER_00I found them at a Target. What I love going to a suburban grocery store is finding out that there are like 12 million types of Oreos. Yes, yes, yes, yes. Like what new Doritos? Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Just went to Target. It was like so much fun, honestly. Because they like re-branded, I feel. Yes.
SPEAKER_03They have good brands too, actually. And there's so many more sodas. Yeah. I'm shocked with how many more sodas. Oh my god, yeah. I'm just like, I don't care. Watch I cook. Collard rings and like stillers and like best, whatever that tea that you brought in recently. Brooklyn best. Brooklyn best, I've started to see popping up. There's so many drink brands now that I never even like that didn't exist when I was growing up.
SPEAKER_00No. And they're all reacting to trends, you know. Yeah, I've there it was probiotics a few years ago. It's all these things.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00You said mentioned fiber. Creatine.
SPEAKER_02Like I have a bunch of like creatine drinks in my DMs, and like we had one at the store, and then from there I was like getting like a lot of inbound. But my store is like super feminine. I feel like a lot of girls don't like I had to push it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Interesting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I listen to like some influencers and podcasters, female ones, they're now getting on the creatine band wagon. As opposed to like men for a long time have been spotting. Yeah. What else is a trend on your shelves?
SPEAKER_02Protein. Yeah. Always. Um when I went to Juice Press and I was unboxing things, like the staff there said to me, like, is this a protein store? And I was like, what?
SPEAKER_01That's not the creation.
SPEAKER_02That's not the vibe. Like, yeah. So I guess that is like a huge trend. I mean, it's in everything.
SPEAKER_03It's an everything. Yeah. Well, tell her about your protein powder that it like lied about the protein.
SPEAKER_00Oh yes. Protein powder.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I need to like.
SPEAKER_00They're in Target now. They reached out after our Nate Rosen episode. And it said 26 grams of protein. Now, it is supposed to be like PB2. You know PB2? Yeah. So it's a powdered peanut.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00So I said, oh, 26 grams of protein. That's great. Look at the back. Serving size, six tablespoons. That's about the size of a scoop of protein powder. The actual serving size is only two tablespoons. All their recipes say two tablespoons. So it's not even close to 26.
SPEAKER_03No, that's crazy. Yes. That's like not a protein powder. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_00It's really I'm not a fan of their product. I'll just say that.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Has have there been any products you brought on and been like, this is not working.
SPEAKER_02Like I don't know if I should say that. Should we leave that? Whatever you want, yes. The packaging is so good. And like they just did something really cool with tanks, and like they had a billboard with our feet, and like I thought it was really funny. Oh, cool. It doesn't taste great. And I don't know. Yeah, it just didn't. It was dry. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Yeah. It wasn't it. And then I don't know. There are some things. Drinks are harder to sell because people aren't as curious with them, I think.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I think I'm so curious about drinks.
SPEAKER_02You are more than a lot of people, though. I'm typically not trying them unless you don't like it. It's not the first thing I look at. Me neither. It's never the first thing I look at. And I realized myself, I'm like, wait, what? Yeah. And I should be like looking at that stuff. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, was there anything you put on the shelf that you were surprised by the reaction, whether in a positive or negative way? I love those questions.
SPEAKER_02I was surprised about how people reacted about like the people behind the brands. Like people, whenever we did samplings, like so many people from TikTok came and like were like, we just want to support like the founder and stuff. It was more like that than the taste.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And like that's not even someone with like a huge following. Like everyone has a good following, or like starting out, but people are like, Oh my, I just want to support, like, she's so cute, she's sweet. Oh my god. I love that. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Consumers are more conscious, conscious in that way of whether it's supporting like a black business owner or a queer business owner, a female business owner.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's true. And you put yourself out there. I feel like you are the face and you're talking and interacting. So like people want to support you. You're doing good things. Yes.
SPEAKER_00We loved the branding. How did you come up with the pink, the stripes? Was it just things you loved?
SPEAKER_02It's just things I loved. I wish I was like, I really like I'm trying to come up with ideas that aren't just things I love, like that are just cool. Like, I wish that I could have like that's like a really cool aesthetic. Like, I love the way Erwan looks. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Honestly, happier and meddling, but like that's not me. Yeah. Um totally. But it's just really me and like doodling has always been something I love to do. I had and then I found someone when I did a pop-up at Michigan, and now she does my illustrations.
SPEAKER_00So good.
SPEAKER_02She's so good at drawing.
SPEAKER_00So well, I feel like we can feel your passion for it. Yeah. And then that just goes into your infection. Yeah. We'll be right back with your obsession. We're gonna ask you for one word to tease us.
SPEAKER_03Cult.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_03I would never join one.
SPEAKER_00Oh I 100%. I don't want to join one. We'll be right back. So you tease us with the word cult. Cult. What are we joining?
SPEAKER_02I'm obsessed with brands that have such great packaging that it starts a cult. Like I feel like there's a road cult, there's a set active cult. What's your number one thing that cult you're in right now? I think I'm in the polka cult, which is like one of the syrups I brought you. I feel like it's a good thing. Oh my god, he was just pretty. Like, I just want to put it in my purse. I'm like, I don't know. I love it. Okay, so what do you put in it? Like you put it in like a coffee? Yes. You can put it in anything. Like a flavored thing. So and it tasted really good. That I'm into it. I'm into it. It's just a good sweetener, and it doesn't look like a sweet and low. And like I feel like it's not trying to. I feel like it's supposed to look like something next to a road lip gloss, kind of. You know, it just would look good.
SPEAKER_00I think this is brilliant. I think it's gorgeous. It's just a little syrup that you can add to your coffee or your oats or something like that.
SPEAKER_03Zero calories, zero sugar.
SPEAKER_00Three grams of fiber. Fiber. I don't understand how fiber can be in a syrup, but we don't ask those questions.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. What flavors do they have?
SPEAKER_03Vanilla, pistachio, and they have pistachio. I'm I'm in my pistachio era.
SPEAKER_00We got him when we went to the store.
SPEAKER_03I didn't get pistachio. Oh. Did you get like the pink one, maybe? The strawberry shortcake? Yeah, but like pistachio. I got the vanilla one.
SPEAKER_02It's really good.
SPEAKER_00So what other brands do you think classify as these like cultures?
SPEAKER_02So I mean like Graza.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like if my friends, if I went to her apartment and didn't see Graza and the random olive oil, I'd be like, why didn't you get graza? Yeah. You're like, I don't know. It's a status symbol, I guess, in a way, which is why people love like these luxury niche grocers. Yes. And like I am all for that, to be honest. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_03What about that um peanut butter, that upside down peanut butter? Oh, one trick pony. Yes, one trick peanut button. I would like peanut butter and I think it's so cool. Yeah, I guess like that's like, and then people are trying to copy it now. And it's like Raza too. People tried to copy that. It's like they want to get in on this cult's idea so bad that they start just literally copying them. What cult are you in? I know this is such a good cult. Well, I'm in a pistachio cult. Oh, I'm in a blank street cult. Like, but that's a cult.
SPEAKER_02Like, why does VC funding taste so good? I live. The green got like cuter, like the green got greener.
SPEAKER_00We have to talk about this. We love blank streets. And we're like, and people chastise us about it.
SPEAKER_03Like well, we were kind of anti-it too. We were like, oh, we can't how does no it's so good.
SPEAKER_00I always say, like, yes, it's a VC funded coffee shop. Those millions of dollars have found the perfect product. I agree. I'm sorry, it's a perfect product.
SPEAKER_03They come up with delicious cream latte right now. Monthly they have new ideas.
SPEAKER_02Every time I go on a walk, I see people holding it too. Like it just looks good. It's like everything going for them. It's like more than just a coffee store. Which is like, I want to have that thing with the shelf, so I'm like, help me figure it out. You're going to get there. Yes.
SPEAKER_00Absolutely.
SPEAKER_02But like, how do places like get that symbol? Like, what else is like that other than Blink Street? I guess. I'm trying to think. I know, like, what other people are. Medalane has that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Medalane has that. Obviously, Erwan. Yeah, Erewhon definitely.
SPEAKER_02I think like Mimi's is getting it. Or like, I don't know. A lot of the families. You can't tell like which one though.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There hasn't been like a full standout because all of them have lines. Like, I don't know. It's the new Greek yogurt one. Is the Greek yogurt one from Miami? Or did I make that? Mika or go Greek. Mika.
SPEAKER_02I think they're from Greece, but they started they had one in Miami. First, I think maybe that's what it is. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I like, I can't wait in that line. That's just not happening. I can't do it. And I love Proyo, so it's really upsetting. And they turn off their DoorDash. Like, you know, like you can go like usually and get it, but no. I wouldn't even know it. It seems like I want to skip the line. I did the pickup.
SPEAKER_00I've been on that culture game for so long. Yeah. I love it. It's so good. Have you been?
SPEAKER_03I love it. You have to go. I need to go. Pure Vita just opened a flagship store on Fifth Avenue and 16th Street. And they have fro yo. I didn't like it. Oh, well, because it's like not real sugar.
SPEAKER_02But I like, I wanted to. I usually love that. It's like, yeah, we don't know what it is. It probably is fiber. Yeah. But like, it's just like the texture was off. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00Well, we went to a place. Or on the upper east side. We went to go get yogurt.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Frozen yogurt.
SPEAKER_03Yes.
SPEAKER_00We go into this place. What was it called?
SPEAKER_03Was it the protein yogurt cup? You know what I'm talking about? I got the fro yo. I got the fro yog. These Drew and Kyle decided, no, let's get the Greek yogurt.
SPEAKER_00The frozen Greek yogurt. Okay. Sloan. It was the consistency of goat cheese.
SPEAKER_01Disgusting.
SPEAKER_00Scoop like goat cheese, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so it has to have the swirl. No swirl.
SPEAKER_02And it like was what topping did you have?
SPEAKER_00Well, first, like threw mine on the ground.
SPEAKER_02By accident.
SPEAKER_03It just like happened.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think my body was like, this is gonna be shit. Rejecting it. Don't take it. Suddenly, I just was on the ground. I got chopped, I got like the normal thing.
SPEAKER_03You guys hated it. I don't even think either of you finished it. I'm just like happy with it. I had I got the fro yet. Okay, I got it. I'm sure. Yeah, cool. Crazy. I mean the money I spend on. But they're live too.
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03The money we spend on it too, like Blank Street. I'll spend $12 on my matcha strawberry shortcake. Yeah. No shame. No shame. And then what did we buy? We bought um the puffers. We bought the puffers that hold. Oh, I wasn't here for that. Oh my god. They sold out. We bought I bought them the second they hit the internet.
SPEAKER_00The R Blank Street podcast. They want to sponsor us.
SPEAKER_03It is interesting though, like it's like cult around like celebrity brands, but also all of these like food brands. Right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think I'm more of a cult for a food brand than I am any other like skincare or anything. I think I would fall into a cult of a food brand more than that.
SPEAKER_03Well, I say that, but then like I love the road products. Like I brought I bought the road phone case and the lip. And I like buy those products.
SPEAKER_02Like the glazing milk like made me break out, but like I want to try the makeup still. But I'm so scared because it but it's so like everyone's using it. Everyone's using it. And I'm like, I just watched your makeup routine and I looked at Skims. Oh, you love the skims.
SPEAKER_00I am a Skims cultural fanatic. It's the most comfortable, flattering. They released new colors. I'm buying the new colors, even if I don't like the colors. Right. Like I have a hot pink one from Valentine's Day, but I was like, yeah, it's a new pair of underwear.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, like I have a like a pajama set. I was like, yay. I like never really wear pajamas like that. I wear like a big shelf shirt.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00I bought boxers. I don't wear boxers.
SPEAKER_03I think there's something to be said about how like these things will sell out, but they're not inaccessible. Right. So like skims is like, oh my god, you I feel like maybe at first it was hard to get some skims, but now like you can get it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Even though sometimes it sells out restocks, and even with brands, like you can you can access it. So I think that's makes it more like exciting to buy. That's true. Because you're like, I can't not get my hands on it.
SPEAKER_00You still have that um mentality that it's going to run out. Yes, exactly. Even though you're like, well, they're Macy's now. Right. Like they're not gonna run out.
SPEAKER_02But like do you think they're forever brands? Like you'll know Skims in 10 years.
SPEAKER_00I think Skims is a forever brand solely because I know someone that worked on the um she doesn't work there anymore, so I can say this. She worked on the Spanx acquisition. Like she was responsible for the deal. And she believes that Skims is a better product.
SPEAKER_04Oh wow.
SPEAKER_00Like even though she's uh an part owner, technically, of SPANX, she believes in Skims more. Isn't that fascinating?
SPEAKER_03The stuff is shaping though. Like they have something for everything. Like my friend when at her wedding, she had this really low back. Right. She's like, they have the low back and they have, oh, it's a slit on the left and a slit on the right, and like they have something for every single outfit you could be wearing.
SPEAKER_00Do you think a part of this is the cult of personality? Like the fact that it's Kim. Because I'm not a Kardashian person. They just never.
SPEAKER_03Some people don't even really like put herself. Like, she's not a part of that. Right. I don't know. I think some people love Kim and will do that, but some people don't even associate it. I think.
SPEAKER_00I just bought it because I heard it was amazing underwear. Yeah. And I was like, oh, it's Kim. I believe it. But Kim, part of that is like She wears it though.
SPEAKER_02Yes. That's the thing, actually. And like I you see her like looking like an hourglass and stuff like that. And you're like, why I first want to learn the body sets. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I was like, whoa, that's like doing it. The topsy though, like the tank tops make everyone look so good. It takes one person to look good and for me to be like, where'd you get that? Totally. I know that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you have you brought in any products to the shelf that you think will become a forever brand?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. A cult brand.
SPEAKER_02I honestly, I mean, I was the first retailer for Cotto, and I think that it's been I like every day I watch it and I have chills and I'm like, I found you when you had a backpack, and not that I like I'm the founder of her, but like she's at Fairway. That's like a big story. It's the way cottage sheets, right? And like almost every conversation that I have with people, like I was talking to like GoPuff, I don't know if I can say that, but like they were like, Can you put us in touch? Like, we want her everywhere, and I really think that she'll become like everywhere just because no one's done it. And it's like a nuke type of hummus in a way. Yeah. So maybe that.
SPEAKER_03And then I am bored with regular hummus. So yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you you know you said I'm not an owner of it, but you helped her, like you helped that brand. I feel this way in our real jobs when we book someone on our respective shows that then become mega stars. But also on this podcast so far, we've had a couple of people be on the podcast, and then like a month later, they're written in the New York Times. Oh, okay. Or New York Post covers them, or they get a today show thing. And it's so cool to get on the ground floor.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I agree. People like I knew you when. And those people don't forget you.
SPEAKER_02No, like they're gonna remember you forever. Honestly, like there were so many brands, like when I first reached out, like for my first pop-up, where like I honestly look back at it and I'm like, I can't believe you made time to speak with me because like everyone's so busy, like so. Like, I remember that. So it's like the same thing.
SPEAKER_00But I think you're taking a chance on each other, though.
SPEAKER_03Like they're new to you, like, let's do this, like that's kind of like a whole thing. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And that's what I think is fun about this endeavor that we're doing. Like, we want to talk to people that want to talk about their things, right? Yeah, and so that everyone's been like so willing to come on the pod and talk about it and engage a bunch of things.
SPEAKER_02People love talking about themselves as well. It's fun, why not?
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Um, we're running out of time, but we want to do a lightning round to get your takes on some final hot topics. Simply tell us if you're obsessed or over it.
SPEAKER_03Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_00Three, two, one.
SPEAKER_03Blondes.
SPEAKER_00Over it.
SPEAKER_01Sorry.
SPEAKER_03I know fireworks. Over it. Making lists, obsessed.
SPEAKER_00Get ready with me videos.
SPEAKER_03Obsessed. French manicures, obsessed, self-checkouts, over it. Buttercream frosting.
SPEAKER_01Obsessed.
SPEAKER_00Me too. Budgeting.
SPEAKER_01Over it, but unfortunately, you have to be obsessed with it.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, Claude. Oh, jelly sandals. Over it.
SPEAKER_00Having a little lemon for brightness. You know, when you get like you got like uh like fish or something and someone puts a little lemon on it.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. Over it. Who needs lemon? I don't know. Is this like fiber?
SPEAKER_00That's gonna be my new vocal stamp. Does this have fiber?
SPEAKER_03Okay, our last question. Are you ready?
SPEAKER_00Three, two, one.
SPEAKER_03Are you obsessed with us?
SPEAKER_00I'm like, oh my god. Yeah, we wouldn't have had you on here if we weren't. We have so obsessed with you. We love the shelf. Tell our listeners where they can follow you and the shelf.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. You can follow the shelf at the shelf NYC, and I'm basically that too. So that's my thing. But you can find me at 58 West 8th Street when we open in August.
SPEAKER_00Oh my god, I don't know if I'm excited for you.
SPEAKER_02We'll be there.
SPEAKER_00We will be there. Yeah. And we will bring a brand new baby.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh my gosh. We'll get baby products then.
SPEAKER_03There's actually one I already found. I know you've got no research on this yet. I feel like entering that is a whole other thing. Like mommy brands. Like I can't even imagine.
SPEAKER_02Oh, do you follow Chelsea Park? No, should I? Yeah, she's like cute and pregnant right now. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Hopefully she's not cuter than me. No, she's long program. I'm like, thanks for tuning in. Are you obsessed with us? Please like, comment, and subscribe.
SPEAKER_00Bye.
