Psychics
We're Emily and Kyle. We started as coworkers in late night television, and now we're best friends exploring NYC and our FYPs.
SPEAKER_03This is an interview show about obsessions. Ours, theirs, and maybe yours too. Welcome to We're Obsessed With You. Hi, Emily. Oh, that's so sad. Hi everyone. I'm Kyle O'Donnell. This is We're Obsessed With You, the show we talked to the people we're obsessed with. About the things they're obsessed with. Thank you, Drew. That was unrehearsed. This is weird talking into the camera alone. I just am gonna say it. It's a weird thing, so bear with us as we figure out what this is going to look like while Emily is on maternity leave. We love Emily. By the time this episode comes out, baby will be here. I'm sure it's going to be a big baby. Um, but we just want to send Emily and Mike our love. We're so excited for them. I guess I'm just gonna soliloquy now. I hope you guys don't mind that. Drew, jump in if you have anything you want to add. Great. Um, my day started fabulously because I made former guest Chef Riley Meehan's peanut butter coffee drink. If you don't know what that is, you take a like you're when you're done with a jar of peanut butter, of which I'm like done with a jar of peanut butter every two minutes, you just take it, you brew espresso into it. I have an espresso that I love, the Nespresso Virtuo. And you add a little bit of cinnamon, a little bit of vanilla, and some milk of your choice, and then you sh close the jar and shake it up. And it tastes just peanut buttery and delicious, and I love it so much. It was a great way to start the day. And I put it in my chocolate lab cup that I talked about in last week's episode. It was just like the most fabulous way to start the day. But here's what I am obsessed with this week. My first one. I'm obsessed with these shorts I'm wearing. Should I stand up?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Crot shot. Um, these are human by nature uh shorts. They are a men's clothing company. I found them on Instagram. I love advertising. Advertising works on me. I am such a good consumer when like things are served to me on Instagram. I like have to buy them immediately. But this is HBN, Human by Nature. It is a 90s sportswear-inspired men's clothing company, and I love it. They say they're for city boys and culture movers. These are the picnic shorts. They're like a nylon short with a pocket with zippers, which I love, and there's a liner. They're so, so, so, so, so comfortable. I love them. They're butter yellow, gingham with a blue stripe down the side. They're incredible. Reminder, you can find all of these on our ShopMai. Um another concept was introduced to me today that I'm really obsessed with. The word knotgeil. It is a German word. And if you know anything about the German language, they have like absolutely incredible words to get like a feeling, a vibe that we just don't have. Drew, can you look up that famous one? It's like genius in the stairwell. It's the German phrase for when you come up with just the right thing to leave to say as you're leaving.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay, why does she sound French? It's a German word, right? Whatever.
SPEAKER_00It might be French.
SPEAKER_03Really? Yeah. So Drew has told us that it is actually originally a French word that the Germans adopted. Trippenvats? What was that, Drew? Treppenwitz. Trappenwitz means genius in the stairwell. And it's basically when you come up with a response to an argument or something, like as you're leaving, which I just love. Like the Germans have such a mastery of the English language. The English language. The Germans have such a mastery of the English language, everyone. That's what you can expect from We're Obsessed With You, hosted by Kyle O'Donnell while Emily is on that leaf. This is what this show is. So, anyways, I am obsessed with the German word not guile. Not meaning need, distress, emergency, and geis coming guile coming from the word aroused. So not guile literally means being so horny that you are in need. You're in like distress. So let's say um after a week in Fire Island, Kyle was so not guile. Ooh, that kind of rhymes. Um after a week in Fire Island, Kyle was so not guile, was so driven mad by being not guile that he spent $45 on OnlyFans. There we go. Not guile. Use that this week. I hope none of you are not guile. Actually, I kind of hope all of you are not guile by listening to the solo episode with just me. Um finally, my last obsession. It's not the pimple on my chin, but it is the product I used to make it not so bad. Cera V Acne Control Gel. It is my favorite drying lotion for um pimples because it's clear. You know how you can put the things on your face and it kind of looks like calamine lotion, and that's supposed to dry out your pimples. Okay, some of us are podcasters. We're gonna be on camera. And don't come at me with pimple stickers and everything. That's whimsy. I cannot get behind. I actually am so over pimple patches. I think they're disgusting. But the Cera V acne control gel, it's a clear gel. You just put it right on your pimple and it does an amazing job drying it out. But there's no alcohol. Like so many of these drying products have alcohol that just like the skin. This is phenomenal. Hopefully by tomorrow the pimple will be gone. Um, it's about 20 bucks. Find it on our shop my and our Amazon. Just a reminder, everyone, to please rate and review us on your podcast podcast app of choice. That's Apple Podcasts or Spotify. Go to YouTube and subscribe or watch our episode, comment, share, all that good stuff. We are on TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Please follow us on Facebook, repost us on Facebook. Facebook is a great way to keep the show going. And that's everything. Or you can email us at we'reobsesswithyou.com if you have any feedback, especially now as we're like trying to figure out what's going on with the show when it's just me and Emily's on Matt Leave. Um, we want to know what you want to know. Like, do you not want to hear from me at all? Do you just want to get right into an interview? Fabulous. We'll do that. Um, but we we're growing, we're changing. We love you guys. Um, I also love our guest this week, Abby Price. She is the owner of Abode, which is the incredible shop in downtown New York in Soho. It's also abode.com. They are basically responsible for that kitschy LL Bean boat and tote bag trend where people would like write funny things on it. The stores has been open for about five years, but a few years into Abode, Abby decided to buy a $10,000 embroidery machine. And it basically just sat in her store. And when she finally started offering the embroidery services, she had her banner day, like the best day in the stores business. So she kind of pivoted to a complete embroidery business. She's partnered with CEO Bigelow, she's uh partnered with LL Bean, which is huge. And now she is partnering with Abercrombie. They have an exclusive line with Abercrombie with their custom embroidery designs on their items. It's available now. I'm sure it's probably sold out by now, but we love her so much. We'll be right back with Abby. Abby Price, we're obsessed with you. Welcome.
SPEAKER_02Thank you.
SPEAKER_03I am truly devastated that Emily isn't here because we've been obsessed with the boat, your shop, since it opened. Like I have a very distinct memory that we went, we like started following you on Instagram right away, and then we did our Christmas shopping there because you opened in May, right?
SPEAKER_01Yes. And yeah, in May 2021.
SPEAKER_03Yes, and then we were there for Christmas, and we were, I think we may have met you when we were there, and we were just we were like in love. We were like, this is such a brilliant concept. And at the time it was just home decor and vintage stuff and we loved it, but I was obsessed with the boxers and lips. That was huge.
SPEAKER_01Thank you.
SPEAKER_03So for those that was so fun. For those of you that don't know, um, at a bode, they were selling boxers and they would make little imprints of your lips and then embroider them on the boxers. They were the cutest fucking things in the entire world.
SPEAKER_01I know. That one was like an epiphany that hit me, and I was like, all right, we're doing this starting tomorrow and making it a thing. And it's just kind of grown and changed from there.
SPEAKER_03So I you kind you had this epiphany about this embroidery machine and kind of pivoting your business. Yes. Where did that come from?
SPEAKER_01So I actually just had seen an influencer get gifted a sweatset that had cute little icons on it back in I guess like 2021, right when I kind of opened the store and I was like, oh, that's really cute. And then I was like, huh, embroidery, never really thought about that before. And so I was like, this would be such a fun addition to our home decor store.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Because you know, I could get little napkins, things like that, and just like add it in. So I just bought one randomly. Like I was like, okay, the year is ending. I have been, I made a little bit of money. Why don't I just like spend $10,000 on an embroidery machine? And so I just did it. And then it sat in our basement and it kind of my family. I remember my family being like, Oh, how's your embroidery machine that we told you not to buy? I was like, it's good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um, and that was like, it really was just like, I thought it was cool. And I was like, this could be a fun addition.
SPEAKER_03And you followed your gut instinct. It's amazing. It's so cute. A boat is just, it's the perfect, perfect store. You've developed this incredible brand. Thank you. Um, and I also I was a big fan of the kitschy um tote uh boat and tote. Yes. Thanks. And I think that you guys were kind of a part of that. Like really becoming a cultural phenomenon.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Amazing.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I know that one was really cool. That was when we hosted our first collaboration with LL Bean. That was very much like the first big, big collab where I was like, I remember they emailed us and we were like, wait, like, I think this is spam. Like, this isn't real. Like, there's no actual way LL Bean is emailing us. And I even had texts from months and months prior, being like, oh my god, what if we did like a collab collaboration with them? But you know, it'll never happen. And then when they reached out, we were just like, What the fuck? Like, this is crazy.
SPEAKER_03That is incredible. Like it's a goosebumps, I assume.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_03I just wanted to mention this. I'm also from the North Shore of Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_00Um I'm speechless. I know.
SPEAKER_03So when I found out you're from Marblehead, correct? Yeah. Yes, I'm from Danvers. Oh my god. Massachusetts.
SPEAKER_00What? That is crazy.
SPEAKER_03So I am, and like I have such an affinity. Like LL Bean to me is like Givenchi. I'm like, that is a legacy brand. 100%. It is pure class. I love it so much. It's in my DNA. So when you got that, I didn't know you're from Massachusetts, but I was like, that's a get.
SPEAKER_01Uh-huh.
SPEAKER_03Amazing.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, it's so funny. I didn't know that. Yeah. So I grew up in Swampscott, or I grew up in Marblehead, and then I went to Swampscott High School. And then my mom still lives in Marblehead, the house I grew up in. Whenever I go home, I'm spending most of my time in Marblehead. And then my dad lives in Nahant. So I kind of split my time between like Marblehead and Nahant. Swamp Scott, like, I mean, they're all, you know, within a five-minute drive of each other.
SPEAKER_03Yes. My sister's fiance is a cop in Marblehead. So if you ever get pulled over, I'm going to give you his name and you can drop it.
SPEAKER_00I'm going to write that down on my house app.
SPEAKER_03Yes, absolutely. Um, so you mentioned these collabs. You've done Bigelow, you've done LL Bean, and you now have one Abercrombie. That's fucking insane.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, thank you.
SPEAKER_03That is amazing. Congratulations. How did the Abercrombie collab come to be?
SPEAKER_01Okay, so that one, also crazy enough, they reached out to us, and it's crazy because this is kind of my first time publicly talking about it because it will be out by the time everyone's listening. Yeah. And so it's just basically I went to Ohio State.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01Abercrombie is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, where I went to college. Yes. So it's so beyond full circle, like almost even more full circle than something like LL Bean, like growing up as like a bean girl. Um, so I have friends who work there. People just like I've been to their campus in Columbus many times throughout college. And I think that the original contact there, her like cousin's best friend was um in my business fraternity. And she just like we were kind of on their radar through the Ohio State connection, and I think just through the brand. And so we just had really initial conversations with them back in October of like last year. And I was like, this could be something. And then we just kind of kept chatting and came up with this idea, and they're really doing a big push um for New York because Abercrombie was actually founded in New York, and they are kind of bringing that heritage back. And I think that they love that we were a New York-based brand, and it just all really organically worked together. We've been embroidering on Abercrombie denim and Abercrombie pieces for our shoot. So it was really just like a collaboration that just like made sense from the beginning and was super organic, and we're just really fortunate that they reached out to us.
SPEAKER_03I love it. And one in your my research, you talked about how you are very selective about these brands. Like you want Abode to be a legacy brand in yourself, so you have to be more strategic about it.
SPEAKER_01Definitely.
SPEAKER_03And I think Abercrombie is such a cool one to work with.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I also think Abercrombie is in this huge transitional period. Like as a kid, I was so into like scared of the one at the North Shore Mall. You know, that one later.
SPEAKER_00Yep, at the North Shore Mall.
SPEAKER_03Yes. You can smell it. Yes. And I was so terrified of it because I was like, that's where the cool kids are. Oh, yeah. And now I'm as as 34 years old and buying Abercrombie. And I'm like, I love it. It's so good.
SPEAKER_01It's so good. Everything is so good. I love how inclusive they are in terms of like sizing and styles. You know, they have this huge range, the lengths, everything. And I think that was really important. Um, they're just like cool, they're doing it right. They have such a good culture. Even every single person I've worked with on their team has been amazing. Like I've we're friends now. It's just I'm obsessed with them and everything they're doing, and I'm just so honored that they would want to work with us. It's just crazy.
SPEAKER_03I love it. You talk about how they want to center New York.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Your shop and you are an incredibly New York thing now. You're on your way to becoming a New York institution. Thank you. I want to talk about your engagement party, which was so incredibly New York.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, thank you. It was everything.
SPEAKER_03Um tell our listeners a little bit about the party.
SPEAKER_01So my fiance and I are back in New York, are obsessed with New York. We will, I should have, you know, not I should have made New York my obsession because that is actually how we don't have enough time. Yes. Yes. And we are not getting married here, but I always wanted my New York moment. And so I I really just like manifest everything and like kind of like have things in my head and just make sure they happen no matter what. So I've had for years now this idea of this like hotel New York engagement party. And I assume so we actually tea, we booked the engagement party before we got engaged.
SPEAKER_03What I love about you know, and this is how we know we're sisters, you both did, and you're like, these are one of my three pre-approved engagement outfits.
SPEAKER_00Exactly.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_03A type A sister. Yes.
SPEAKER_01So I was like, because I was like, you know, we've been together for a while now, and I was like, all right, I'm not necessarily in a rush, but like the engagement party window is drinking. You know, I'm not gonna do the middle of summer where no one's around. So I was like, you know what? I'm not getting my engagement party messed up here. So as long as we set the date for that, then you know what? You can take your time and you can ask me when the time is right. So we ended up finding Hotel Chelsea to be available. I mean, what is more iconic New York than that? Incredible. So I knew I wanted that whole thing, and then from there, I'm just obsessed with like customization, building out a theme.
SPEAKER_03So I was like, I need to go all in our iconography of it all.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I needed to do all of that, and I just am a bode and I are like one being. So I'm like, how can I leverage a boat and bring it in? I'm just so fortunate to have my team to like make cool stuff for me. So I just I love customization beyond just embroidery too. So that's why I did the custom silver tray and like any detail that I could, and it was just actually the best night ever. And I think and people don't do engagement parties as much as they used to.
SPEAKER_02Oh, totally, absolutely.
SPEAKER_01And I think like have the engagement party, and also I think the whole trend now is like you're surprised with your engagement party, like right after you get proposed or you get engaged. Yeah, but like the proposal weekend was legit the best weekend of my life thus far. And then now I had this whole other moment of this engagement party, and like I get to kind of space it out a little bit. And as a someone who loves planning and loves coming up with ideas, like I kind of wanted to do that and I was excited for it. So you kind of like just do the engagement party.
SPEAKER_03I think you know, life is so miserable and it is so long.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And if we can have any reason to celebrate, yes, and guess what? People do want to get dressed up. Yeah, people do want to like they want to celebrate their friends, they want to drink, they want to eat, they want to have a good time. And that looked like a good bucket. It was time.
SPEAKER_01It was so fun. I had so many texts from my friends the next day being like, I sorry I didn't take any photos because I was just having so much fun. And we were dancing and like it was a three-hour event, and just a little tidbit, I think a tip for people if you're in that getting engaged. Basically, what we did, it was three hours long because if we wanted to do a fourth hour, it was gonna be way too expensive. So we cut it at three.
SPEAKER_03Then you're getting into wedding wedding budget.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. And so what we did was we told everyone it started 30 minutes earlier than it actually did. Right. So then everyone showed up right on time because everybody was 30 minutes late. And then the first hour we did um just like mingling, kind of chill, cocktail, food was being passed. And then this my fiance's um dad and my dad like said like a short word, and then right when that they finished speaking, it went right into like an epic song of it was like a mama mia remix. Oh my god. Announcing like dancing, and everybody was on gathered from the speeches, and it just went right into dancing, and we had it's like an epic two hours of dancing, and then my fiance and I said something right before the last song, which we did New York, New York, obviously. Of course, and so then we were like, all right, guys, last song. So like the flow is just perfect. So if you're doing this, copy this flow. It was amazing.
SPEAKER_03I love that. So many people don't actually know the energy of an event. Yeah, and it's if it's something innate in people if they know what how to do it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's so that's so fabulous.
SPEAKER_01Thanks. It was the best time. There's so many photos on my Instagram if you want.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yes, please follow Abby.
SPEAKER_01She's such a good follow.
SPEAKER_03I freaked out when Sabrina Carpenter wore an abode shirt for her SNL performance of Man Child.
SPEAKER_01Yes, that was crazy.
SPEAKER_03How did that come to be?
SPEAKER_01So her styling team reached out to us because they needed to get a shirt done, and it was really just like as simple as that. And I had no idea it was gonna turn into what it did. I was like, yeah, of course we'll make this. And then I made a couple posts about it, which maybe blurred the lines of what I was, you know, supposed to do, and it kind of took fire, and it was just the coolest moment ever. And her team is like the styling and the taste level of her stylists and everything they do is just like beyond unbelievably perfect. So to have been a little part in that was like so special.
SPEAKER_03I adore her so much. Yeah, and I think a part of why I assume a lot of companies are especially coming to you, is that you are a female owned and led business, which people it's few and far between now, you know. So people really want to help women like you in their business. And I think that's probably a part of like Sabrina Carpenter's team.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_03You center yourself around the business a lot, which I think is so, so smart. Um, was that a conscious thing when you set out to start the business?
SPEAKER_01I would say yes, but not necessarily in the way that you know I wanted to be known. More so, how can I get the word out there about this in as cheap way as possible? And making content and posting on TikTok is like just the easiest way to do that. And I think is also something that every founder should do early on. Like if you can't, either you can spend a bunch of money on meta-ads gifting or you can post on TikTok. It's like those are the two avenues I think that make sense. And we didn't have the luxury of being able to spend all the money on stuff. So then that led to me posting about it. And I think it's organically kind of grown, and I think it's a trend that these founder forward businesses are doing well. You identify with the person, so I just try to lean into that and do that when I can. But also, you know, as we grow, I don't want it to be all about me, and I want to make sure that the business can survive without me and people still, you know, I think as we grow countrywide and we're not just a New York brand, less people know who I am, which is I'm okay with that. You know, I just like want the I abode is first, and then me as a influencer or creator name like always comes second.
SPEAKER_03It was just one chapter of the abode story. Yeah. And so for you to be able to like maybe take on a more like private.
SPEAKER_01And I'm just like, the internet is really scary.
SPEAKER_03I to put yourself out there on the internet nowadays is truly the bravest thing someone can do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's really crazy.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god. I it it's heartbreaking to hear that like that may not be a great space for you because I look at your store and your page, it's just like so joyful and colorful and fine.
SPEAKER_01I know that's what I try for.
SPEAKER_03And I smile all the time. Emily and I are constantly sending things, being like, this is so fucking cute. Oh, are you guys kidding me? Uh it's so good. And a lot big part of this is that you really engage with your consumers. Um, you have the Instagram, what are they called? Groups, like the channels. Yeah, yeah, yeah. The broadcast channels. Yes. How are you engaging with potential customers? Or your customer.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think like I try to be the main person who hosts in that. I love getting opinions. I always even though my personal stories too will ask for people's opinions and to vote in things. I think our customers, especially being retail first, which most businesses are I feel like they go online and then maybe they'll open a store or do a pop-up. So the customer has always been at the heart of everything for us. And I'm really actually excited too about giving back to them this year as we're doing a limited edition product that's only gonna be gifted to like our community and some like and some influencers, but mostly just like the influencers we have relationships with. Like nothing who's supposed to be. You're right, guys. Yeah, not just like, you know, a big name. So I've been actually screenshotting as like I notice names or people DM me on my personals, I'll like screenshot them and add them to like our VIP list. So then we can like work with them and gift them. And I there's names I see over and over again, and I try to be like, I'm sending you a like what's your email? I'm sending you a gift card, things like that. Because I really try to show them that it's we care about them and we're really here because of them.
SPEAKER_03I love that. Like loyalty matters so much.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And especially while you're on such an amazing trajectory in the grand scheme of things, you guys are still a small brand. So getting creating these um really loyal relationships at this, like not nascent stage, maybe like adolescent stage, yeah, if that's fair, um, is so crucial. And I think you're really you're really onto something.
SPEAKER_02It's amazing. Oh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um, finally, I just want to talk a little bit about travel because your page you have the most enviable passport in the world. You know how to travel. And most importantly, Abby, you do not gatekeep. You post where you're staying, you post your real thoughts and everything. So we have some just travel spots. Like you love Mexico City. You got engaged in Mexico City. What are some of your favorite spots? Because I feel like it's in Mexico City or in general? Oh, Mexico City.
SPEAKER_01Okay, well, I think that a real fun thing about Mexico City is like I'm more of a hotel girl, but I think that you can get amazing Airbnbs in Mexico, and that's such a fun way, or Mexico City, it's a such a fun way to like see it because you can get these amazing, gorgeous design forward apartments that are not that expensive. Um, when we got engaged, we stayed at Casa Polanco, which was unbelievable, like one of the best boutique hotels ever. Um, but just everything there is just amazing. I think like Panaderia Rosetta is like the most basic spot, but it is basic for a reason because it is the most unbelievable um pastries I've ever had in my life. Yes. Um, I just my my fiance is like obsessed with food and equally, but he's more of like the research guy. So we have like long Google Maps lists of rec. So if anyone wants it, DM me, I can send it to you.
SPEAKER_03That's a good, that's a good list to get on.
SPEAKER_01Yes, but like even like the corner taco place, you know, it's it's just it's so good there.
SPEAKER_03I love it so much. I went to my favorite gay bar in the world there. There's a gay bar there called Vaqueros, and it's like a classic um cowboy bar that just happens to be gay. So like they're playing like real classic Mexican music, and they're the men are doing classic Mexican dancing. Oh my god. And I was just like so fun. This machismo versus like the home eroticism of it all. It was amazing. I was like, it was like brought a tear to my eye. I love it, I loved it so much. I love that.
SPEAKER_01There also is like a really strong kind of cowboy culture in Mexico that I don't think people realize, like because we're I think associated with like America and the American cowboy. But I've my parents live in the south, and there's um a lot of like flea markets that have the most unbelievable Western, like cowboy boots and all that stuff, and they all it's all like from Mexico and the stuff's just like amazing.
SPEAKER_03But as a New England boy, I look like a fool if I try that. I try on a cowboy hat, people sniff it out. Oh, yeah. They're like, no, no, no, no. No, go put on like your plaid shorts, buddy. Um, which city do you think has the best gift shops?
SPEAKER_01Ooh, um probably Paris. I feel like the shopping there is just next level. Like the amount of stuff you can buy is just crazy in like the little stores. Honestly, Mexico City too, I think has really amazing shopping. I'm so sick of like buying things that are made in China when I go to other places. So I think that the shopping at Mexico City, Paris, probably my favorites, and also like London. It's just like unbelievable shopping too.
SPEAKER_03What I love about Mexico City is that it's such an artisan-based culture. So, like you go into their souvenir shops or their like markets, yeah, and you're getting like the vendor there is the person that made this. Yes. You know, I got a gorgeous silver tray from a market in um in Mexico City that I'm just in love with. And this guy made it. It was it's amazing.
SPEAKER_00It's the best place.
SPEAKER_03Um, okay, we have some questions for Emily. These are questions from Emily.
SPEAKER_00I don't know how many people were in your how long did that jack. But was she a favorite? What are you obsessed with?
SPEAKER_03Favorite stores for fun finds in New York.
SPEAKER_01Ooh, um, Rosemary Home in the East Village is unbelievable. Her curation is next level, so I would say that's probably my top one. And I think Big Night is a great store for just like gifts and things like that.
SPEAKER_03Great. Is there anything that someone has brought in that you were like, this is what you want embroidered? Or like a funny idea?
SPEAKER_01We've embroidered handcuffs before.
SPEAKER_03Kinky! Yeah, what did they say?
SPEAKER_01I don't remember because it was a couple years ago, but like oh, and this is actually insane. This woman came in, like what before we had our studio, like when I was in the store every day, she got a t-shirt that she was shopping at, like, she was out with like her husband, and I think it was like his kids. I'm pretty sure it was like uh not her children. Yeah, and she got this like oversized t-shirt that said big C-O-C-K daddy on it. No, huge, yeah. So I was like, I don't know if I can say that word like out loud. And so she got that on a t-shirt and she like got it. She was like, make sure the kids don't come in and like see this being embroidered. We put it on our machine and did it in the back of the store. So if there's anything you guys want, a vote doesn't say no, unless it's you know inappropriate.
SPEAKER_03Yes, it can be kinky and be a ball.
SPEAKER_01Exactly.
SPEAKER_03Um, and then one thing you'll be embroidering for your wedding.
SPEAKER_01Um, I mean, honestly, I think the shorter list would be things I'm not embroidering for my wedding.
SPEAKER_03Is there you're such a detail-oriented person? Look at her bachelorette or her bridal party ask, which was incredible. Her engagement party. I love the bag that you thank you. I don't know if this was the intention, but it was giving me thank you for shopping bodega bag. Cute! Like the white and red and like the graphicness of it and just like the shape of it. I was like, this is so I like I loved it. So will you be doing a lot of customization for your wedding?
SPEAKER_01I want everything to be custom. Like, I don't even want to do paper. Like, I want it to all be like embroidered and fabric. And I'm thinking something unique. I like, I want to do my dress, my veil, like I'm working with uh to do cowboy boots with a brand. Like every single thing is gonna be like custom and crazy.
SPEAKER_03It's gonna be incredible.
SPEAKER_01Thank you.
SPEAKER_03Thank you, Emily. We'll be right back with your obsession. What's one word you'd use to tease it?
SPEAKER_01Okay, I don't know if it would be considered two words.
SPEAKER_03That's okay. We can do two.
SPEAKER_01Woo-woo.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, I'm so in. I love woo-woo. Oh god, we'll be right back. I'm so excited. Oh, this is gonna be major. We are back and we're talking about woo-woo. Okay, you're obsessed with something woo-woo. Tell me, I love everything woo-woo.
SPEAKER_01I'm obsessed with psychics.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god, we don't have enough time to talk about this. Okay, let's get into it. When did this start? Do you have one? What has happened?
SPEAKER_01Okay, so I love psychics. I love manifesting. I am a witch. I don't know if it leads back to being from the North Shore area, from being born in Salem Hospital, but I was born in Salem Hospital too. I think it like like I actually think I have powers, not only from things that have happened to me, but like things that people have said to me, and not powers as in like, you know, maybe what you think of as like a witch. And I also don't think that I can like tell the future, but I think that I have crazy manifesting powers that all works together with like psychics. I ask my team, anyone who really knows me or works for me will all say 100% like I make all these crazy things happen. And so I first started noticing that honestly with a bode. And the first time I went to a psychic was, I want to say it was back in like 2021 or 2022. And how I went to the psychic, I think was the first like inkling of like signs and me really looking for things is I really wanted to go to a psychic and I went to see an influencer talk, like just I don't know, it was like a QA with her or something. And she was mentioning how she had this psychic that was amazing and all these things the psychics had happened. And I was like, Oh, I really want to go to her psychic. But I feel like a psychic's like a therapist, like you can't really just like go and ask someone for their psychics information if they're not publicly sharing it.
SPEAKER_03Yep, if you want mine, happily funny.
SPEAKER_01So I was like this random girl. So I was like, okay, I'm not gonna like go up to her and accost her to get the name of her psychic, but I'd love to go to her, okay, in the back of my mind. Then I just start working with this like PR girl, whatever, and she is like, I'm telling her, I really want to see a psychic. And she's like, Oh, I actually know the psychic, like I can give you her info. And so I look on Instagram, and then it turns out that is the influencer's psychic that I wanted to see.
SPEAKER_03The invisible thread theory. Yes.
SPEAKER_01So I was like, okay, obviously I have to see her. And that was my first like real time like paying, booking consultation, doing the whole thing. And I just, I mean, I loved what they said. Yeah. So maybe that was like it was a great reading. So I was like, oh psychic. So this is amazing. And ever since then, I just really enjoy it. I think whenever I'm feel like I'm at a crossroads or I'm not really sure, or I want reassurance, it's just like another thing that can help me make a decision, or like I just I really have enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_03This is so funny because this week I thought I have to call Catherine again. Like, I've been thinking about going back to my psychic, the someone I met with.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03So when you say that you have some manifesting powers, like can you elaborate on that?
SPEAKER_01So I think like it can be as broad as you know, when I first started abode and wanting to open a store, I just literally got the idea in my head after seeing some other young women open stores, and I was just like, oh, I'm opening a store. And I would just tell all these people and they'd be like, oh, when? And I'd be like, I don't know, but I'm figuring it out and it's gonna happen. And then I did, and then it's as niche as like I there was a um a celebrity, a celebrity's wife or a fiance, I guess, at the time. I really wanted to make napkins for their wedding. And I was trying all these different ways to like get in touch with them. And it was someone I had mutual friends with. So it wasn't like she was like, It was possible. It wasn't Taylor Swift, you know what I mean? It was someone who I kind of had connections with, so it was possible. I was trying to figure it out. I even asked like her friend that I knew if she could reach out to her and say, Oh, my friend wants to make these napkins for you, whatever. And it was just not working. I couldn't get in touch. People said they were asking nothing. And then I that morning I met with someone who was working for me doing kind of like PR stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And I was telling her, I was like, you know, everyone, like get this, make this happen. And then I go to work to the store like an hour or two later. This was like maybe two, three years ago now, and I am usually would sit in the back, like on my laptop, but I think the girl working was on her lunch break, whatever. I'm standing at the front of the store, and that girl walked into the store. No, yes, and I was like, hey, I really want to make napkins for you. Like, I'm so and so's friend. And that's just like one of many, like things like this happen to me all the time, like literally all the time. Like, I'll even like this is so niche, but like, and of course, New York is such a small world, but like there's this videographer I really wanted to work with for a bow to do this like piece on our five-year anniversary. And we haven't been able to really, she's very hard to pin down because she's just talented and really busy. And I was like doing this podcast thing on Monday, and it was at like a studio, like a st like a collective store space, and I've rapped with a girl, and then she opens a door and she goes, Oh, Abby, do you know her? And I go, Oh, I've been trying to get in touch with you, and like just crazy things like that.
SPEAKER_03I believe so wholeheartedly in this idea that if you say I'm this is going to happen, it will. Like you can't say, I'm trying to do this. Like, when I talk about this pod, I'm like, this pod is a success.
SPEAKER_01Like, yes, oh, a hundred percent.
SPEAKER_03You have to put in it into words and everything.
SPEAKER_01Definitely.
SPEAKER_03I so believe that. It would be crazy to think that people don't have that skill. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, 100%.
SPEAKER_03When people are like, no, you can't be a psych. Yeah, what do you mean? Yeah. Everything in this life is energy. Yes. Of course. Yeah. This is energy. Like when you leave, like we're still going to be energetically connected. Yeah. Everything like that.
SPEAKER_01No, I totally agree. And like I remember one of the really and my one of my best friends for her bachelorette. We got a psychic and it was like everyone kind of did them. It wasn't like everyone listened in. We would kind of go and take your 30 minutes with her. I mean, we're waiting, so it was like a private thing. And it's funny, it's a bachelorette. Oh my god, everything's fun, crazy, whatever. We were all like sobbing because of the because the readings were like so intense and spot on and like amazing. And I, this was in April um of 2022 or 2023. I whenever abode was kind of flopping as what it was pre-embroidery. It was right around that time. We had just kind of started, and I remember I was so anxious to go in and talk to her because I was just like, she's gonna tell me my business is gonna fail and I need to move on. And like that's what I was just so scared of hearing. I was like a ball of stress, and I sat down across from her and I literally just immediately started crying because I was so like stressed and so worried. And she was just like, No, like you're doing the right thing. Like it's you're very close, it's going to happen and it's all gonna work out. Just stick with it. Stay in. And then literally, that's like was the last conversation I had until things just started really turning around and the business started turning around. And like, of course, it's that's easy to say, but like, and I've also had people say, you know, oh, I see your your soulmate or the person you're with, their first initial is Jay, and like my fiance's name is John. And while granted, Jay is like the most common letter for men, it's just like it's just fun.
SPEAKER_03But I also think that opens you, I think a lot of it is it opens you up to the possibilities. So like when she says your fiance, you're gonna marry a man with the name Jay, like you kind of take every Jay name more seriously going forward that you may not.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I love my psychic. I have two quick I have a couple of quick stories about psychics. One was that my mom always growing up, she would always say, like, my psychic told me I'd have an ungrateful son. Like she went and she was like, She was always right, always right. Yeah. Um, and then so funny. I know. And then I saw a psychic, I saw, I mean, talked on the phone with a psychic recommended to me by my friend Ken's. And she was so spot on about things. And it was my like first real my first time like really diving into it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And she kind of said things to me about that like oh that opened my eyes to things in my life that I kind of was just ignoring. And I was like, oh, I should explore that path.
SPEAKER_01Totally, totally.
SPEAKER_03It's I think I would actually love to revisit with her because it was a really meaningful conversation. Yeah. This psychic that I go to, she it's over the phone and she you're talking to her. She's like, all right, I'm gonna like channel in and she'll like do the business in her head, you know? And what she always does is she gives you an image of your moment in time. And so my friend was like, she told me I was a like I'm furiously writing in a journal, and I keep throwing the ideas out, and then like every few pages, like that's the one that sticks, and that's her like energy for it now. And mine was a like a seltzer water bottle that had kind of been shaken up and then opened and exploding everywhere. And she was like, You're you've just been very self-contained, and now you're like you're coming into your form, you're exploding everywhere. And she said, Do you not drink? And I said, No, no, I drank like a lot. Yeah, and she was like, That's interesting because usually I see champagne when I get this image, but it's water. Three months later, I decided to not drink. I stopped decided to stop drinking. It was not in my head at that time. Totally, but I just was like, this isn't serving me anymore. And then six months after that, I was like, She thought a bottle of water.
SPEAKER_01Oh, a thousand percent. Isn't that crazy? It's crazy.
SPEAKER_03She also diagnosed me with Giardia before I had it. She does my psychic does a physical scan of your body. Like she'll be like, let's do this. I'll give her your info. She's amazing, and she's not that expensive. Yeah, but she's the real deal. And she was like, I'm getting low vibrational energy in your gastrointestinal tract. I was like, Oh, that's weird. Two weeks later, I am sick as a dog. I have to go to the I go to the hospital and they diagnose me with Giardia.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_03And two strains of E. coli.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god. Is that not crazy? That's crazy. No, that's insane. It's just like, why would you not take all the options presented to you to make informed decisions? Like my I have a business partner with a boat that came on a couple years in, and he, well, he's a guy, so obviously, like he's a straight guy, so he doesn't get it.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_01And I'll always be like, good news. I hung up, I hung up with the psychic. It's gonna be fine. Like the business is gonna do great.
SPEAKER_03And he's like, We're in the black baby.
SPEAKER_01And he's always like, Abby, like, please. He's like, he's like, first of all, don't waste your time, work harder. If you have an hour for on the psychic, that's an hour you can spend working it about. No. Second of all, he's just like, okay, like that's nice and all. But I'm like, no, like it's all gonna work out. And I did a kind of a like a speaker speaking thing last night where I was interviewed for a bunch of um other founders. And something I said there that like I'm so you know, delusionally optimistic and believe in myself and the success of abode. And like I've known since I was in Swampscott High School that I was gonna do something cool and interesting. And I think that like that delusional optimism and confidence has given me what I needed to like jump into starting a business and absolutely living to embroidery and doing all these things. And I think that kind of it just to me that confidence manifestation, so it all just is like one thing of like one of my favorite compliments that people give to me is like I love your energy. Yes, one of the things. And I think because it all just works together, yes.
SPEAKER_03Um, so we're running out of time, but we want to do a lightning round to get your takes on some hot topics. Okay. Simply tell me if you're obsessed or over it. Three, two, one. 50-50 raffles.
