Here is another episode from A Simple Discussion Podcast that I wanted to upload to this podcast. I have created some episodes that could be on either podcasts at the end of the day really. I enjoy having two podcasts that can be versatile on either one. It was a great episode to put together when I was working on it.
Hello and welcome back to a simple discussion. My name is Hannah Covington, and today I'm so glad to be back with Ryan Stilwell. I know it's been so long since last time we talked.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's been since it's been a few weeks. Cool to be back on with you.
SPEAKER_02I know. It's we have a lot of exciting things coming up. I hope the weather will be permitting and I get to go.
SPEAKER_00I've been seeing a lot of stuff on social media about snow days. People are getting pretty creative with their snow days.
SPEAKER_02I know. Because I've actually just been using it as a time to do a lot of work, is what I've been doing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I like seeing some people post that so it's mostly ice, right? It's like snow, then ice, and then snow here. So they're they can't even make snow angels, so they're saying they're making ice angels.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I'm seeing a new trend also of people daring other people to go out in the snow and doing snow angels.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, in shorts, right?
SPEAKER_02Shorts or pants, but you can't have a coat on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true. I've wanted to do that, but I don't know how well I would do.
SPEAKER_02I am the same way. I was afraid one of my co-workers was gonna dare me to do it. And she did not dare any of the staff at all, and I was like, thank Lord Jesus.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, nobody has dared has dared me yet, thank goodness.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so how did you survive?
SPEAKER_00Watching TV mostly, and playing cards with my mom.
SPEAKER_02I saw where you watched Oh Brother Where Art Thou.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I I watched the funny ones mostly. I didn't I didn't want to watch dramatic movies that much.
SPEAKER_02I've seen Oh yeah, I I have. I consider it a southern classic.
SPEAKER_00I do too. I mean, it's probably the best bluegrass album out there, maybe soundtrack.
SPEAKER_02I am 100% gonna agree there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, I just love the music. It makes me think of the South, you know, in Kentucky and Tennessee. So I really love that album.
SPEAKER_02I I do too. And my favorite song off the album is Man of Constant Sorrow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's like the best scene of the movie too, when they dance towards the end.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's like the best scene of the movie.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna 100% agree. And the siren scene.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's pretty good too. I mean, I love when they bring up R U N N O F T.
SPEAKER_02Oh. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00How they spell Runoff.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. Um, but it sounds like you just been watching a ton of stuff.
SPEAKER_00We watched a pretty funny movie. It's new. It has Kevin James. Have you heard of him?
SPEAKER_02Yes, I have.
SPEAKER_00And a guy, he's mostly an action actor. His name is Alan Richson. Have you heard of Reacher? Um No. Well, he's in Reacher, and him and Kevin James are in the movie, and it's so hilarious.
SPEAKER_02That sounds good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's a action comedy.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00I love when they mix action and comedy together.
SPEAKER_02I I would actually agree to that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Did y'all get more snow or ice?
SPEAKER_00I think we got more snow. Last night, I think we got more snow, but that's pretty much it.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I would say we probably got more snow than ice, but I heard in Bowling Green it sounded like they got more ice.
SPEAKER_00Western was off all this week.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they haven't done that since 2024.
SPEAKER_00And I remember they had a I mean the whole state of Kentucky had a big one in 2016. I don't know if you remember that. It was like 12 to 13 inches if I remember.
SPEAKER_02I I was still in high school, and I don't know how I don't remember that.
SPEAKER_00I was in middle school and I was about to miss the rest of the school year because I was having ankle surgery.
SPEAKER_02Oh. Yeah, I don't remember that at all. I don't know why. I think that was probably during the year I tuned out a lot of stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because of family situation stuff that happened that year.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I just don't feel like talking about it.
SPEAKER_00Nah, you don't have to.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. I just remember the big one in 2024.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02Because I had to keep asking Kelly, my cap advisor, like almost every single day. Because she would check in on me in 2024 of are the w roads any good? Because I was worried of driving on not great roads. But I just remember oh sorry. But the roads were pretty good uh the day I started my internship. That's good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's good. I was just gonna say it was fun when I was little because my Korean parents live in the woods. That's why I tell everybody. They live in the woods, and whenever we had snow days there, it was pretty fun because we were stuck there, but we would still go sled riding and stuff because there was hills over the place. So it would just be fun to ride to go sled riding down a steep hill.
SPEAKER_02That sounds like a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_00It's not just my grandparents that lived back there. It was like my cousins and my uncle and aunt. We would all get together and ride sleds.
SPEAKER_02I like sledding when I was younger, but as I've gotten older, I'm not a fan.
SPEAKER_00I don't know if I could handle it now that I'm older.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm the same way. Did you try I don't know. I'll have to try it, but Yeah, because you have a little brother and he's probably of age he probably wants to do it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean he don't know yet, but he didn't like the snow yesterday. We took him out yesterday. Aww. He has really bad sensory issues. He don't like having the big coat on or gloves or any of that kind of stuff.
SPEAKER_02And that's very common on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And he don't like wearing a toboggan.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00So very big spectrum stuff.
SPEAKER_02I mainly have been staying in to a degree. I've gone out once, and that's about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, the first time my mom, brother, and I went out was yesterday. So and it was hard getting out. It was fun.
SPEAKER_02Uh I got out a hint before the storm hit. I had a game a day before the storm hit, and we we did the game until our Shelbyville station went off air during the third quarter of the game. That that was not pretty.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel bad. I won't be able to get my s get to see my dad again this weekend. I mean, we're meeting him tomorrow for lunch, but that's pretty much it.
SPEAKER_02Aw. Yeah, I've been practically staying in working on stuff, reading, practically read a whole book.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's been hard, like, keeping up with groceries and stuff because we keep running out of stuff. We have to keep ordering more groceries.
SPEAKER_02I've been working, we did a game night on Discord with with a bunch of us alumni, and that was a ton of fun. I was sad you weren't there, you would have liked the games we were playing.
SPEAKER_00What games did you all play?
SPEAKER_02Uh there was a game called Bad Cards, kinda like What Do You Meme, which was really fun. You would have liked it.
SPEAKER_00I know I would have. What do you mean's my jam?
SPEAKER_02I know. And I was like, dang, I wish Ryan was here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because everybody was like, this is a small crowd, and we just played until about close to ten o'clock at night.
SPEAKER_00Wow.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So and uh and I've started watching, of course, Richerton. I'm taking my Stranger Things break.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Some people need a mental break from Stranger Things.
SPEAKER_02And so I'm in the middle of watching that. I don't like that Netflix is starting to split up the good shows.
SPEAKER_00True. I don't like shows ending early though, like five seasons in. It would be cool if they would make ten seasons again, like a regular sitcom or something like that.
SPEAKER_02So we had a little bit of an issue with the internet agreeing because of the cold weather outside. Yeah, so we are back, and we were talking about seasons ending early, and we do not agree with it.
SPEAKER_00No, we don't. But I tell you what we can agree on though.
SPEAKER_02What?
SPEAKER_00In that social media. See how I did that there?
SPEAKER_02Oh, it's such a good turning point, which is today's episode.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And this was one of those topics the newbies were wanting to do, and I was like, well, Ryan and I could talk about this separately.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It's a pretty interesting topic, especially people who are on the spectrum see how they're represented in different types of social media.
SPEAKER_02I 100% agree because I have been on a social media break myself from Instagram, which was the best decision I have made.
SPEAKER_00I still haven't I still haven't done a social media break. I'm trying to pick the best time.
SPEAKER_02Honestly, w you will decide on your own. But I have been off of Instagram as of right now three weeks, as of yesterday.
SPEAKER_00How has that been?
SPEAKER_02Honestly, very relieving. It's been a good mindset.
SPEAKER_00Because you were on Instagram more than Facebook, right?
SPEAKER_02Yes, I was. And since being on that break, I swear I spent more time on Facebook, which I'm not mad at, but it's made me explore Facebook a lot more since taking a break from Instagram.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for me, when I go on Facebook, I mostly do like debates over songs and stuff. I don't because I'm a music buff, so I don't really do much of the drama type of stuff, if that makes any sense.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I'm about the same way. Like I don't like put debates about anything. Like the only things I might post about is uh this podcast.
SPEAKER_00But music's pretty interesting though, because I like seeing other people's opinions. I mean I do like the other songs that uh debate over, but I just pick this one song and that's it. And I see if anybody else answers which song they like better.
SPEAKER_02And have you gotten any interesting answers? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean it's hard right now. I mean, I have to actually go on Facebook and see an example. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_02You're totally fine. Um And most of them are rock songs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. As you know, I'm a big rock guy. I get that from my dad.
SPEAKER_02And some of them some of the songs you picked, I'm like, hmm, interesting choices.
SPEAKER_00If you have never heard those songs, you should listen to them.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I am slowly trying to expand my level of music.
SPEAKER_00That's what my cousin's doing. He's expanding his range, and I've been like that for a long time now. I just like listen to everything, and if I like a song, I like it. I don't care what genre it is.
SPEAKER_02And this is something I wrote down is which platform do you feel shows autism in a positive light?
SPEAKER_00It's hard because there are some platforms that it shows a positive and negative light, and I feel like the biggest one right now is TikTok. I've been I'm seeing a lot of reels about parents taking care of their child that is on the spectrum, and it's pretty positive to me.
SPEAKER_02Okay, and I'm not a big TikTok user, so this surprises me.
SPEAKER_00I mean my mom mostly watches those.
SPEAKER_02Okay. I was gonna honestly say I'm like you. There's a positive and a negative light. Yeah, I I felt like it was Instagram for me before I took my break because I follow a lot of positive accounts. I follow fathering autism and his wife and their son who's not on the spectrum, and they post a lot of positivity. I follow a few people from Love on the Spectrum.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna ask that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I follow them because a lot of them I want to see behind the scenes of what is going on like when the show is not being shot.
SPEAKER_00True. And there's a couple of people from Love on the Spectrum that are open to doing podcasts because I've seen that.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. Um I know there are two moms who appear on the show that actually run a podcast.
SPEAKER_00I've watched that because it shows one episode in their perspective, and in their son's perspective, then their brother's perspective, their sister's perspective, then their father's perspective.
SPEAKER_02Y Yes, I know which podcast you're talking about because I have listened to that podcast.
SPEAKER_00They would be cool to have on.
SPEAKER_02And I've thought about emailing them a year ago, and I kept forgetting to. You're talking about Talk to Me Sis, aren't you?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02That is the best I mean podcast.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I love that they brought other family members from the show on their podcast. I love that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're pretty cool people.
SPEAKER_02I actually like the episode where they had James's dad on. That was straight up hilarious. Because if you don't know anything about James's dad, is he is a interesting spirit.
SPEAKER_00Going to the negative light, I feel like it's mostly seeing news stories, you know? Like about I'm gonna get sensitive here, but it's mostly like tragic deaths and about cops around people with autism. I've been seeing a lot of that. People on the spectrum drowning and stuff. I mean, that stuff gets to me.
SPEAKER_02And you know what's funniest I talked to some fire EMS people back in August and and a lot they get a lot of autism calls where a kid has went in the water and went away from home.
SPEAKER_00I mean that scares me with Reed because he's nonverbal, you know, he can't talk to people and he can't tell them their name or who the who their parent who his parents are. That's what scares me.
SPEAKER_02Have you thought about getting him a medical bracelet?
SPEAKER_00So here's my thing. I never wanted to put my brother on a leash or anything. I was weird. It's just like treating treating the kids like a pet.
SPEAKER_02See, I you know I have a medical bracelet and I wear it m religiously because of my epilepsy. Which I have openly talked about on this podcast.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you have.
SPEAKER_02If you've not listened to my favorite DJ episode one or two, we talked about my epilepsy.
SPEAKER_00With Andy, right?
SPEAKER_02With Andy, and guess what? Uh in February, we're gonna be back together again, so that's gonna be I know I'm with my favorite human again, other than you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I talked to Tony Rose about that, and he was like, Who's her favorite DJ? And he was like, Oh yeah, that Andy Morgan.
SPEAKER_02Of course Tony would say that. He's not surprised.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. They're buds too, because I see pictures of them together.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and they literally talked to each other the whole time I was doing my internship. Which I'm glad they're talk like at least those two, like, are keeping in conversation. At least.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I don't know if it seem it sounds like you got them two closer together.
SPEAKER_02That is so weird.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I didn't think about it like that, but I'll have to ask him about that. Yeah, there's some times where I don't think when I say something.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, same here.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But what were you saying about the negativity?
SPEAKER_00I was saying that it was just news stories basically from Facebook and Instagram. There's some news stories that are pretty negative.
SPEAKER_02I would 100% agree. I think the biggest one being the Tylenol.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's okay. I I mean, I felt like that is very wrong. You can't find a cure for autism. Don't be putting news articles out saying you can cure autism.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I saw the Tylenol story and I was like, hey, this is the best fairy twale I ever heard.
SPEAKER_02I I remember thinking in my head is how many people are gonna ask me if I feel like this is true? Yeah. Because I know we did a trial run on this and talked about it with Dave. I didn't say much, but you had some very interesting thoughts, and I was like, I'm just trying to process it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, which I won't say on this episode, but I was just like I was just like, that's the best fairy tale I've ever heard.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you you had some interesting thoughts.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It was weird, the tile naw story.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes.
SPEAKER_00You remember the RFK Jr. while back?
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah, like the first thing he said when he came into his position was I'm a cure autism.
SPEAKER_00And I don't want to get into that, but I was just wondering if he remembered it.
SPEAKER_02I do because I remember looking at my mom and going, is he psycho?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And somebody was like, I think he did some he did something before going up there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he did. I think him and a certain somebody were devising a plan. And we don't want to get too political on this podcast.
SPEAKER_00We don't. I don't even know why I brought him up. That's my bad.
SPEAKER_02But honestly, it needed to be addressed to a degree.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. But a lot of people know about that one. Anyways. I want to go to back to positive light one. I thought about a story that was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02I'm interested to hear this.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so I'm not good at explaining things, but it's about this kid who uh is on the spectrum and really smart, if you can imagine. Really smart. He was good at hacking computers, he was good at fixing his parents' technology, all of that. His parents were talking about, man, if he could go to a college, it would be awesome. And then he started applying for colleges and he went I forget what college he went to. I have to rewatch this story, but he went for engineering.
SPEAKER_02I feel like I know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_00It's hard to explain that story, but it's a pretty cool story.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and it was made into a film if I feel like I know what you're talking about.
SPEAKER_00Well, there is a lot of m movies about there's one I remember about a kid on the spectrum hacking into the government. And they're after this kid, and Bruce Willis is in it, and he's protecting this kid.
SPEAKER_02Okay. The the movie or documentary I'm thinking of is called Deege. Okay. And this is a guy who was non-verbal, went to college, got a four-year degree, lived on campus. Very bright.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I do want to see this one documentary. I don't know if you know who Brendan Fraser is.
SPEAKER_02Brendan Fraser.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Brendan Fraser. So he produced a documentary about an older autistic man who wears a superhero cape and he does these good deeds for people.
SPEAKER_02I didn't know about that.
SPEAKER_00And I'm like, man, this looks pretty interesting. But I knew about the the only reason I knew about this is because he was on the Kelly Clarkson show talking about it, and he teared up because he thought about his son who was also on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. He's tearing well he's tearing up a lot now, but I support him for it.
SPEAKER_02Is it rental family?
SPEAKER_00I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00But I just remember Brendan Fraser came on and talked about it. Kelly Clarkson brings a lot of. I really love her for this. She brings a lot of people who are on the spectrum. Not just the spectrum, but Down syndrome, and I really respect her for doing that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, she's one of my favorite talk shows to watch if I'm working out, to be honest.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I I most of the time we go to the gym during like when her show was on. I made sure to be at the gym working out while her show was on.
SPEAKER_00I was actually thinking about this interview that this kid had, and it was about him and this cop, and oh his mom was scared of how cops would be around him, and so she took her son to the sheriff's office. I had to think about it for a minute, but he they took him to the sheriff's off sheriff's office, and he met this one guy, got along really well during the whole tour. They were showing him around and stuff, and he sent this letter to him asking if he would be his godfather.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's so sweet.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and every time I watch it, I tear up a little bit.
SPEAKER_02That is so, so sweet. We need more talk shows like Kelly Clarkson.
SPEAKER_00We do. I think Jennifer Hudson's trying to do what she's doing.
SPEAKER_02Uh uh, yeah, I agree. And I have watched some clips from her show, and I really like it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I really love the talk shows. For some reason, I feel like I would be good at it. Because I'm watching two. I'm watching a lot of them. I don't just watch Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson. I watch a lot of them.
SPEAKER_02I am a big watcher of the today show.
SPEAKER_00Is Hoda your favorite?
SPEAKER_02No. You know what's surprising? Al Roker. Oh, he's your favorite? Yes. Huh.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And it's because and it's because he has a son on the spectrum, and he's pretty open about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true. I forgot about that. That's pretty cool. Because his son likes to cook, don't he?
SPEAKER_02Okay, we are back and we were talking about Al Rauker.
SPEAKER_00Yep.
SPEAKER_02And his son, who is also on the spectrum, and what they did during COVID, which I really liked, and I would see that as a positive light. And his son is actually in college.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I forgot what college he goes to though.
SPEAKER_02It's one up in New York.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02It's in New York, and it's kind of more of like a life works, is the best way I could describe it, because Al does give updates sometimes, but not all the time. Cause me and Alexi um had conversations about this because we were wondering if Al's son was gonna come to the Kelly Autism program for a little while. And we were gonna look forward to meeting Al actually.
SPEAKER_00Oh, he was thinking about coming?
SPEAKER_02I think we thought they had looked at it.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_02Cause Alexi and I are big today show people. What TV show do you think represents autism well?
SPEAKER_00I mean, I feel like we talked about some, but I feel like a TV show, I would say I mean we talked about Love on the Spectrum a little bit. That's probably the biggest one right now.
SPEAKER_02And I would have to agree. There's been some other shows. There was another one from Netflix. I can't remember it off the top of my head.
SPEAKER_00Was it atypical?
SPEAKER_02Yes, atypical.
SPEAKER_00I haven't watched that one yet, but I heard he's treated really well.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. That's one Good Doctor.
SPEAKER_00Good Doctor.
SPEAKER_02Thoughts on Good Doctor.
SPEAKER_00Haven't seen Good Doctor, but I've heard that the actor does a really good job.
SPEAKER_02And he did. I think they showed the real world very well of how he got treated. There was zero sugarcoating. They showed how we do well in a workplace and what happens if we have a mental breakdown.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Which is what I Oh. Which is what I liked about the show. I only got to watch a few episodes because life got busy and we couldn't keep up with it.
SPEAKER_00My mom and I want to try and watch Good Doctor.
SPEAKER_02You should.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02At least at least give it a shot.
SPEAKER_00I want to watch Love on the Spectrum, but I don't want to watch it by myself.
SPEAKER_02I think you and your mom would enjoy watching that together.
SPEAKER_00I feel like it would be cool seeing because I bet it's their first dates, right?
SPEAKER_02First dates to the struggle of keeping a relationship. Just all the ins and outs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It would just be cool to see their reactions because it's their real reactions, you know?
SPEAKER_02Oh yes. The longest couple on the show is Abby and David.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_02That is the only longest relationship, and I don't want to spoil spoil the show for you.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02But that is the longest so far.
SPEAKER_00Okay. But I do know I watch interviews though, and I really like Tanner and Connor. Oh, yes. And I really like Connor because he reminds me of me. Because he's he can memorize different things. He's really into Vikings and Dragons. And he could tell you what all this diff different stuff is from that time.
SPEAKER_02And you know something else? He's a big movie buff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true. I've seen that.
SPEAKER_02He thinks the perfect day is watching a good movie.
SPEAKER_00That's me?
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, I would pick Love on the Spectrum. So far there hasn't been a show that has not done a good job. Now the only thing I will say about the shows we feel that do show Possive Light is they only show one gender.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I mean Big Bang Theory, they don't really say it, but there's Amy Farah Fowler. There's a lot of rumors about her.
SPEAKER_02Yes. Her and Sheldon both uh being on this spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and I've I don't know if you'll agree with me on this, but I feel like Big Bang Theory shows autism in a negative light, and young Sheldon actually shows it in a positive light.
SPEAKER_02I didn't think about it that way.
SPEAKER_00Because I seen I don't know if you've seen all of young Sheldon.
SPEAKER_02I've seen a decent amount.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but I don't wanna tell you the last season because something big happens and it affects Sheldon.
SPEAKER_02I know I know what the big thing is.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02He goes to college.
SPEAKER_00No, there's another one.
SPEAKER_02Is it Georgie and Mandy having the baby?
SPEAKER_00No, it's I it's his dad.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes, yes, yes, I watched that episode.
SPEAKER_00And it was rough watching him like after he heard his dad died, because that makes me think, like, if we lose someone that close to us, would we be thinking about the last time we talked to that person?
SPEAKER_02You know what's funny is I've been there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like that was me too, but it was hard because I was doing a play and I wasn't really thinking about this person during the play.
SPEAKER_02You know, I I would say I've lost some people, but as I've gotten older, it's like I've been learning how to process and people don't understand why do I not cry right like on the dog, and I like how young Sheldon showed that because most of the time the crying face didn't hit me until like days later or even weeks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Cause I just went through a pretty big death back in May.
SPEAKER_01Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02I wasn't close with this person, but all the emotions hit me like two weeks after we put this person in the ground. All my emotions just flooded me, and I was sitting on my bed curled up in a ball crying.
SPEAKER_00I feel like it's from the day the person died until the after the funeral that I'm usually emotional.
SPEAKER_02And people don't get why it takes this longer.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And young Sheldon was the first time they showed that.
SPEAKER_00And I feel like that showed that in a very awesome way because I feel like some people on the spectrum have dealt with death like that.
SPEAKER_02Yes. And I also liked how they dealt with how Sheldon reacted with his siblings. That was the other thing I was gonna bring up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_02Because Sheldon's a twin. And him and his are Missy and him the polar opposite of him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. That's usually how it is, too.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes. And I like her. Because I'm I know twins, so and moving on from TV shows, I'm talking about your favorite thing in the whole wide world.
SPEAKER_00Oh, movies.
SPEAKER_02Because there's been plenty of movies that have shown representation of autism from documentaries to scripted.
SPEAKER_00There's there's a lot for me. Thinking about positive and negative. Probably positive. It's hard to think of positive though. I would have to say I've heard a lot about this movie Ezra.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's the newest one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I've kind of been interested in watching that one.
SPEAKER_00All I know is it's about his dad and his mom are separated.
SPEAKER_02And they're living and the dad's a comedian.
SPEAKER_00Yes, and they're living with his dad, who is Robert De Niro.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_00Who has a son on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_02I didn't know that until like there was like I think an interview possibly, and he talked about it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and he plays Special Olympics, if I'm correct, because I thought he plays tennis.
SPEAKER_02It was tennis or basketball.
SPEAKER_00I saw tennis, but could be basketball too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I've been waiting to watch that, and the big one I always hear about is Rain Man.
SPEAKER_00So I feel like that's a mix of positive and negative. There's some that's like there's like some things about him that's don't show autism, but like count number of two picks that's pretty weird. And he can actually this actually sounds right. He can read a number off a calculator, how it is, like how to add and multiply certain stuff, which I think is pretty cool. And he can also count cards, which his brother takes him to a casino and uses him to count cards for this game Blackjack.
SPEAKER_02I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's like the biggest scene of Rain Man him taking to the taking him to the casino.
SPEAKER_02Okay, I haven't watched it, but I knew they were on a road trip of some sort.
SPEAKER_00Sorry I spoiled that for you, but it's a little older.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was it was gonna be spoiled at some point. I'm honestly surprised we didn't do an autism movie week during my internship.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that would have been awesome. Like talking about different movies?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I was like what I was gonna say.
SPEAKER_00I'm surprised that didn't cross either of our minds, but I feel like I haven't watched this either, but What's Eating Gilbert Grape, that's a movie.
SPEAKER_02Never seen that.
SPEAKER_00That's Leonardo DiCaprio. He's on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00And try to think of another movie where it's someone who's who loves to run.
SPEAKER_02Oh, run for oh, run forest run.
SPEAKER_00No, no, not forest gump.
SPEAKER_02Well they debate that well they debate he's on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that would actually be pretty cool. Because I I don't know if you know this, but Forrest Gump is my favorite.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So it would be interesting that he's on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_02That is very interesting. The other one I've heard mix reviews on is the one Sia created. Oh. Music. Okay. Have you heard about that one?
SPEAKER_00No.
SPEAKER_02It was due to them not casting a person on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_02In how the autistic character was represented.
SPEAKER_00I mean, that's kinda like Big Bang Theory. I mean, Jim Parsons, he's not on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_02But he's played several characters who they suppose are on the spectrum. Because the character he played in Hidden Figures acted like he could have been on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_02You've watched Hidden Figures.
SPEAKER_00I have watched Hidden Figures, but it's been a while.
SPEAKER_02It's been a while. That's actually one of my favorite black history films.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's Taraji, right?
SPEAKER_02Taraji, Key and Henson, a lot of big names.
SPEAKER_00It was a good movie. I remember I liked it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Same here.
SPEAKER_00But it's been a while.
SPEAKER_02I would like to watch it again.
SPEAKER_00I bet it's on Streaming App somewhere.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think it was on Disney. Any other films you can think of?
SPEAKER_00Um I mean, I don't know if this is a movie about being on the spectrum, but there's a movie called I Am Sam. Oh Sean Penn playing.
SPEAKER_02I feel like I've heard of that.
SPEAKER_00He's taking care of his daughter, and her name is Lucy Diamond Sky, which is a reference to Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_00By the Beatles.
SPEAKER_02How have I not heard that song?
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's a good song. That's a recommend.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I listened to a lot of Beatles.
SPEAKER_00And Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is not what you think it is, though. And I don't know. I can't think of any other movies though.
SPEAKER_02They did a portrayal of Temple Grandon.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I do want to watch that one.
SPEAKER_02I do too. And that was made by HBO.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. I mean there's movies where I feel like some people could have autism, but they never say it, you know?
SPEAKER_02Yes. And it's hard to think of those off the top of the my head and probably your head.
SPEAKER_00I feel like well one comes to mind and it's blended with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. I've Oh yes. I've watched And it's the kid who plays baseball. Oh. And he gets I don't know if that's autism, but he gets upset that he's not he's not doing really well at it, but Adam Sandler helps him.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. Is that is that the one where they went to Africa?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Okay, yeah, I know what you're talking about. Because that was a good film.
SPEAKER_00It was. And I loved how that film was done, if that makes any sense.
SPEAKER_02It makes sense. And I feel like there was a certain character in Old Brother Were Art Thou that could supposedly be on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Are you talking about Delmar?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm talking about Delmar. I can see that. Because sometimes he seems to be in his own world and they have to snap him back into reality.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Especially when he says one of the characters turned into a frog.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's that's one of the best scenes too. Like when the Bible salesman beats them up and kills the toad.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah. I forgot about that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that was good. Now I want to watch it. Oh, it's a I watched that movie. I would watch that movie over and over again if I could.
SPEAKER_02I know. I'm the same way.
SPEAKER_00And George Callooney's from Kentucky. I knew that. He based it off of his uh grandfather, that voice, like that country voice that he does.
SPEAKER_02That makes sense.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So I was just wondering, do you think local media has done a good job with representing people on the spectrum?
SPEAKER_02I was thinking about talking about that. I it depends on the town.
SPEAKER_00In this case Hodgeville's a mix.
SPEAKER_02Uh Frankfurt, like, not really until I really started working at my station I'm currently at. Bowling Green would probably be the biggest.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_02Because you have the fun run.
SPEAKER_00You have the Kelly Autism program.
SPEAKER_02Yes. And LifeWorks.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And they're always like in the news doing something. Of course, Tony's involvement and taking interns on.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then I would say my media company, but it's kind of mixed. It depends on if they're willing, because right now at the current moment, there really isn't anybody in the building who is on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Which is a question that you wanted to ask, and it's do you feel stations are more hazard hesitant in hiring someone on the spectrum?
SPEAKER_02100%.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I agree too. Because I had to be open and say that I am on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_02And in the biggest company that will actually throw your file away if you say you have a disability is iHeartMedia.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I'm like, I feel like I have to say it though, because it's just a way for people to understand. What I'm like, you know?
SPEAKER_02Yes. I've done a mix, if that makes any sense.
SPEAKER_00So you've told some stations that you're on the spectrum and some Yep. You were like, yeah, I'll just act normal during this.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, until I get hired and then I'll tell.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And then then people change their minds.
SPEAKER_02You know what's funny is IHart threw my file away after interviewing me, and I said to the guy, Hey, I'm on the spectrum. He threw my file out after interviewing me when I told him I was on the spectrum.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't like that.
SPEAKER_02No. And Andy did not take that well either.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And he's I would have And he's been my biggest advocate while I've been applying for jobs.
SPEAKER_00I feel like mine has been Tommy.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's one of our biggest advocates other than Tony.
SPEAKER_00He sometimes texts me out of the blue and says, Have I gotten the job yet? And I'm like, no, man. I'm looking for some.
SPEAKER_02I'm possibly getting close, but the snowstorm has held up a lot of stuff.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's true. Oh Mother Nature.
SPEAKER_02Oh Mother Nature. And there's been some not nice comments said to me within my own company, which is even sadder. And not Alan. Alan's a saint.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Alan's awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Alan's awesome. No, Alan wouldn't say that.
SPEAKER_00Nah.
SPEAKER_02He wouldn't. And I honestly don't like that they kick Tony out of number one. Yeah, Tony lost his number one spot, by the way.
SPEAKER_00Oh, that's tough.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, with an uh with a different morning show.
SPEAKER_00I bet he's talking a lot about that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And I and I haven't said anything because I'm gonna be Tony's side all the way, even though I work for a different company.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That that morning show's under. I'm like, I'm still always gonna support Tony and that he's always number one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And Tommy said he is still number two and he's A-OK. Cause he posted about it. I don't know if you saw that.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah. Tommy's always in good spirits. Oh yes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so it depends on the radio station and what they're wanting. But South Central Kentucky is probably the biggest area with people on the spectrum. And they're not being and they're not being represented, sadly.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't I don't like that.
SPEAKER_02Me neither. I'm I'm kicking and screaming my way down there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I just think if you have the experience, they should give you the job. I mean I understand if the other person has more experience, but you shouldn't you should not hire somebody I'm getting my words mixed up, but it don't matter what disability you are, what race you are or what disorder you are. If you are capable of capable of doing broadcasting or whatever job, they should give you that job.
SPEAKER_02I 100% agree because I personally think either one of us is gonna end up back at D at some point.
SPEAKER_00And between the two of us, it's probably Nah I'm kidding. I was gonna say it's gonna be me, but I'm I was messing around. Because I like they know I like classic rock and hey, we're talking about music right now.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Do you think music has done a good job in explaining autism?
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's so hard because I don't hear about it.
SPEAKER_00There's not really a lot out there, if that makes any sense. No, there's not. I mean, I can't think of any songs off the top of my head, but I feel like there's some songs that could be explaining autism.
SPEAKER_02Uh I'm gonna be a hundred percent with you there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, there's a lot on mental health which affects autism.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes. Uh I'm gonna a hundred percent agree. And I probably listen to some of the mental health songs.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and if you think about it, it could be par it could be autism adjacent. Very true. I mean, they just they just try to sprinkle stuff in there in their lyrics and stuff.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's probably more pop than country.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I can see rock too because they're talking more about mental health stuff now.
SPEAKER_02I would agree with country because that's I swear all I listen to.
SPEAKER_00I feel like rock rock has always done that. There's always mental health. There's a lot of mental health in rock, and a lot of people don't know it. I'm like, Metallica is the big one. Read their lyrics, and you'll see, ooh, there's a lot of songs. I feel like the biggest ones fade to black. And the thing about Metallica is you have to read their lyrics because sometimes it's hard to understand.
SPEAKER_02You were talking about Metallica.
SPEAKER_00Yes. They're very big on mental health, and a lot of people don't know that. I see that a lot in their lyrics, so I just tell a lot of people to look at their lyrics and you'll see what I'm talking about.
SPEAKER_02That that is very interesting because I've only heard a few Metallica songs from listening to certain radio stations because of growing my expansion of knowledge of rock and alternative music.
SPEAKER_00I'm just going all over the place, to be honest, with music.
SPEAKER_02This is what this episode's about. We're talking all types of media.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I feel like big on mental health, which is why I like this other band, Red Clay Strays.
SPEAKER_02I've heard about Red Clay Strays.
SPEAKER_00Yes, they're really good. And I really love the guy because he sounds like Elvis, and he sounds like a country singer, Waylon Jennings.
SPEAKER_02Oh.
SPEAKER_00And Ray Charles, Chris Stapleton, he's all over the place.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00With his vocal range.
SPEAKER_02That is very interesting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And and I would also mention Jelly Roll.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. He's big on mental health. Especially the album Beautifully Broken.
SPEAKER_02Yes. I don't know how many songs I've listened off that album.
SPEAKER_00I've heard all of them.
SPEAKER_02I have that record and I can't wait to listen to it.
SPEAKER_00It's really good. And Red Clay Strays, there's an album called Made by These Moments, and all those songs are good on that album.
SPEAKER_02I'll have to check that out.
SPEAKER_00There's not a bad song on that album. I feel like a good song that people should hear that's on that is probably God Does.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're really great band.
SPEAKER_02They look like a newer band.
SPEAKER_00They are. They've been out since COVID. What no, 2017, I think. The lead singer's supposed to be coming out with a documentary on Netflix. It's gonna be seven episodes.
SPEAKER_02That should be interesting to watch.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm very excited about that. Because I watched Jelly Rolls and it was really good too.
SPEAKER_02Did you where was his posted?
SPEAKER_00It was on Hulu.
SPEAKER_02Oh yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think it was called Save Me.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I think I wanted to watch it and I was sad because I don't have Hulu.
SPEAKER_00It makes you that one makes you cry a little bit because of his story.
SPEAKER_02And I've heard of some of his story from interviews I've listened to, and I'm like, if only I could watch that documentary.
SPEAKER_00Or one of my episodes where I talked about Jelly Roll being in like my top five musicians one year.
SPEAKER_02Ah okay. I talked a little He actually made my Apple uh like what you ever whatever you call it this year.
SPEAKER_00He he's really good. I can't wait for his next album. Is he making a new album? I don't know yet, but I would think he is.
SPEAKER_02It would be interesting for him to write a album on all of his like weight loss journey.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Or like visiting different prisons.
SPEAKER_02Oh, I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, that's his big thing now because well, they were juvenile centers because he went to juvenile centers in the beginning, and so he would visit people in juvie and stuff.
SPEAKER_02I d I knew he had gone to jail, but I'd totally forgotten about that.
SPEAKER_00Cool story, Jelly Rolls, I would look more I would look at his story more, it's pretty sad, but it's pretty cool how he's now a singer and he was Grammy nominated, so yeah. That was pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02I don't think he got he has a Grammy yet.
SPEAKER_00He doesn't. He was nominated. Yeah. Never won a Grammy.
SPEAKER_02I know, so sad.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. I just wonder, do you feel that you can be yourself in the media world?
SPEAKER_02I'm still trying to figure that out. I when I was doing my D93 internship, I was just barely surviving.
SPEAKER_00I feel like I have been being myself.
SPEAKER_02I've been trying to since graduating, but I would say I was also trying to find myself the last year college.
SPEAKER_00Because that's what they taught us most in broadcasting is to be yourself.
SPEAKER_02Which is the hardest thing when people are gonna criticize you from where you're interning to people calling in or leaving messages. I think my favorite thing that was told to me by Tony was was you gotta have a thick skin.
SPEAKER_00I think that's why Tony liked me because I had a thick skin with them messing with me, you know.
SPEAKER_02I was rebuilding my thick skin when I was with them. I mean because I was I was practically broken.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I was like, if they made a joke at me, I would make a joke at them, so yeah. Yeah. D93 is jokes. I mean, no, I'm not saying that it's a joke, but they like to mess around.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and I could take their messing around after a while because I got used to it.
SPEAKER_00Different radio environments do get it they do take a while to get used to it.
SPEAKER_02Oh, 100%. I'm so like I like what I do right now to a degree because I'm usually by myself because nobody's really in the building when I'm there except our other producer. We have game games on both stations.
SPEAKER_00The thing about D93 was a lot of people were there.
SPEAKER_02And I and I love that aspect of everybody was in during that time, and you got to have a social aspect of how a station runs.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I'm gonna be honest, Tony and Tommy weren't really around each other a lot, but No. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, because they're doing two polar opposite shows.
SPEAKER_00And they have different sense of humors.
SPEAKER_02Oh yes, I would 100% agree with that.
SPEAKER_00And I think why I like doing that is because I got to do different types of sense of humor.
SPEAKER_02I I would say so too, because the one thing Tony did tell me, because I had originally said and I told this to Alan, I said, I am doing no internship my last semester of college. And Alan Alan was like, okay.
SPEAKER_00And what's funny is I didn't I did do the internship my last semester.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I did one my last semester as well, and Tony was like, why'd you not tell me you d were doing one? I was like, Well, I I didn't know when I was starting, who I was working with until a week before I started.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02What I work and I didn't even have time to tell anybody at CAP I was doing a second internship.
SPEAKER_00Oh.
SPEAKER_02Because the day I started, my phone blew up. Yeah because because Austin heard me on the radio and was like, wait, Hannah's doing this and didn't tell me. I'm like, I was supposed to tell you the day before, but we were snowed in.
SPEAKER_00Oh, Austin and Kim knew I was doing it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. See, that was the thing with D is everybody in the building knew I was doing it with D.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And it was cool because they invited I don't know if you remember me talking about this, but they invited Tommy and Sheila to the graduation ceremony the Kelly Autism program has.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Uh I think if they had known who my person was, I think he would have came to mind. Now, would he have been on time is the next great question.
SPEAKER_00Oh, they were on time.
SPEAKER_02Well, Sheila runs like she has to be organized. Andy Morgan runs on Andy Morgan time.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You haven't met him, and he runs on his own time, and if he's running behind, he's running behind.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02That's why, like, and he was like asking me if he could go to my graduation, and I was like, I don't know. He wasn't mad that I didn't tell him. He was just respecting my boundaries.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, D came to mine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And I saw those pictures. Those were some good pictures.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. D was shouting Rhino when they said my name.
SPEAKER_02I'm not surprised.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they were cool. For doing that. I felt bad because I didn't see them afterwards. But it was a big crowd.
SPEAKER_02Oh, they're huge. It's hard to find people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Like literally my mom and I were on the phone until we found each other.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It was hard finding my family.
SPEAKER_02I yeah. It's like they try to move you out as fast as possible.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I felt like the basketball arena was harder than the football field because I could see where my parents and my dad's girlfriend was at at the football field. The basketball arena was tough.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I didn't even know where my family was sitting on. I didn't.
SPEAKER_00Until they waved at me when I got the diploma.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I didn't even look at all. I was just like staring straight because I was barely awake. I was afraid of sleeping through my ceremony.
SPEAKER_00I didn't.
SPEAKER_02Well you're more of a morning person than me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And it's funny because I'm not a morning person either.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, how'd you survive the morning show?
SPEAKER_00Good question. Um after the morning show, I would go to the Kelly Autism program, and then after the Kelly Autism program, I would go to the Starbucks.
SPEAKER_02I don't blame you.
SPEAKER_00Because I was I was tired, I'm gonna be honest with you, but I got I guess I had the attitude that I knew I was gonna get through it, and I knew Starbucks or Spencer's would help me.
SPEAKER_02And I consumed quite a bit of caffeine myself.
SPEAKER_00I didn't really consume that much, really, but I did enough for me to be awake.
SPEAKER_02I will tell you when I did an afternoon show, it made all the difference.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Oh afternoon's completely different. I agree.
SPEAKER_02Because I enjoyed doing the afternoon show a lot more than the morning show because I actually got to sleep in, I had more energy, I didn't look like I had just totally got out of bed and was barely making it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. It was cool doing that with Tommy though.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you and Tommy seem to get along. I swear I couldn't fly on the wall.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it because we have the same interests again. Because we're into the same like artist. I agree. Yeah, we're both into Elvis and Metallica and Kiss, so nice. Yeah, he's cool, dude.
SPEAKER_02It I feel like we've had a great conversation today.
SPEAKER_00We have.
SPEAKER_02I was like, w we have talked about all things media. We talked about radio to music to movies to TV to even social media platforms.
SPEAKER_00And to snow days. Don't forget about the beginning.
SPEAKER_02Oh, we can't forget the snow. Snowmageddon 2026.
SPEAKER_00That's right, and it isn't over.
SPEAKER_02No, it's not.
SPEAKER_00Next week.
SPEAKER_02Woo! And if we get any more, my schedule is gonna be so busy. I've already gotten my pre-schedule for this upcoming week and the week following.
SPEAKER_00Oh yikes.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's not gonna be fun. I'm just gonna be farewarning some people.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Good luck.
SPEAKER_02Thank you. And this is a simple discussion.
