“Just quit your job.”
“Follow your dreams.”
“Use your resources.”

Sounds inspiring… until you realize what those “resources” are.

In this episode, Glenn sits down with a self-help author whose advice is built on a reality most people don’t live in. From casually suggesting people walk away from their 9–5 to treating trust funds like a universal starting point, the conversation quickly reveals the gap between motivational content and actual lived experience.

Who is this advice actually for?

Listen and decide for yourself.

SPEAKER_02

You know, if you're if you're working 40 hours a week, that is really gonna interfere with your dreams. Try to do something you love only. Don't do jobs you don't like.

SPEAKER_00

But what if you have to because that's the job that's available to you in order to make money?

SPEAKER_01

Find a different one.

SPEAKER_00

I feel like there's a bit of a disconnect um between what your experience has been in your life and like, oh gosh, I don't know, everyone I know. Hey, what's up out there, 87.9 K Who Radio. It's the voice of your boy, Glenn Sheen. I'm in the studio today for the K Who Are You interview. And hey, who are you, person to my left? Or if you're um watching this from above us uh and you're behind me, then also to my left. Uh welcome to the studio today, Sarah Bergman, the author of the self-help book Just Follow Your Dreams. Sarah, hello. Thank you for being here today.

SPEAKER_02

Well, thank you for having me. I really appreciate it.

SPEAKER_00

So so without further ado, let's let's get into your book here. Uh are you a first-time author? Is that what I saw?

SPEAKER_02

This is my first uh full book.

SPEAKER_00

First, first full book. And how many how many pages are we looking at? How many PGS are we uh we we send into the folks?

SPEAKER_02

Probably about 85.

SPEAKER_00

85 oh 85 pages. Okay, okay. 85. You hear that, listeners? You can go ahead and help yourself with only 85 pages. Some books need more. I mean, the Bible's like a couple thousand pages, right? But that's a lot of that's just begatting each other, which turns out is sex. Didn't know that.

SPEAKER_02

Very small print, too, I noticed. The Bible, yeah. Yeah. Very small.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I think they had smaller hands back then.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So when they wrote uh the Bible into print, um, that's the yeah, I think that's the ongoing theory. Um, but but your Bible is called Just Follow Your Dreams. Just follow your dreams. Uh the New Bible, if you will. Hopefully that doesn't get you any trouble for me saying that.

SPEAKER_02

No, I love that, actually. I think I think you're right. I think there was the Bible and now there's this.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, so this is like the sequel to the Bible.

SPEAKER_02

This is uh Bible part three.

SPEAKER_00

Bible part three. What was part two, do you think? Was that the Passion of the Christ movie?

SPEAKER_02

The New Testament. Oh, right.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, New The Old and then the New. The Old and New Testament. I kind of read it all as one, like the Dune books.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's just me.

SPEAKER_02

That's yeah, that's I think Jewish people might have a different take on that.

SPEAKER_00

They always do. So, your new Bible, uh just follow your dreams, is your self-help book. And uh would you mind without giving it all away, uh, a couple tenets of your book, a couple of ways in which you're looking to help people help themselves?

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think the crux of what I want to get across to people is literally just follow your dreams. Like, just do it already. Yeah. Like, what are you waiting for?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, sometimes for people, uh, it is a sense of, you know, uh the right time or encouragement or uh stability financially or emotionally or mentally. Uh, but other than that, like, yeah, what the heck? Get in there.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, just do it already. And um, I mean, what's holding you back? I think I think sometimes people feel that they need to um work for money, which I find very odd.

SPEAKER_00

Do you mind my asking, how is it that you're getting along in the world if you're not um getting paid?

SPEAKER_02

Well, you know, I've got a little bit of a of a trust fund, I've got, you know, I've got some investments going, and you know, that that keeps me afloat. Oh, okay. And I think I'm encouraging other people to to use that money. Don't just save it and hoard it. You know, use it to live while you per while you pursue your art.

SPEAKER_00

So uh in order to be trusted uh as a as a as a as a child, you it means you were like basically you grew up with financial like stability.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So have you ever had to worry about money?

SPEAKER_02

Um what do you do worry about money? Um, I mean, I don't think it's I think it's silly to worry about money. You could just, you know, you don't need to overthink money. You just access it out of your trust fund when you need it and you spend it on things that you love.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, what if, again, back to sort of a core conceit here. What if you don't have a trust fund? Because I don't know uh a lot of people who do, or if they do, they're not telling me.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, well, so I got my trust fund kind of I I think the way that most people do get their trust funds is that I was um, you know, I was I was born and then uh my parents um, you know, they sold, they sold a couple of their companies, and then they created a trust for me and so that I could access when I turned 21, actually. So I had there was a couple of years that were a little dicey for me. Sure. Um because I couldn't access that money. And uh I think somebody mentioned um having a job. And yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And so what job did you work at the at the time when you were unable to access your trust fund?

SPEAKER_02

Well, luckily I had a savings account that they had also been putting away money in. And so, you know, it wasn't a lot. I think it was probably I think 50K or something like that. So I was able to draw from that.

SPEAKER_00

Wow. Um 50K. Well, yeah, not yeah, that's more than I make it in a year here.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, okay. Well Well, luckily you have a I'm assuming you have like some sort of a fun that you can dip into occasionally or uh no, no.

SPEAKER_00

Um no.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

No, no.

SPEAKER_02

You want you want to look into that.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, Sarah Bergman, uh again, just to follow your dreams. The self-help book, only 85 pages long. Um can I ask you, are some of those pages just like little um shout-outs or like thank yous to your parents for like creating a world of wealth for you?

SPEAKER_02

Well, um I I really feel like I did it mostly on my own.

SPEAKER_00

I'm learning a lot. Uh and I'm I love that I'm learning a lot about how much more I'm gonna learn. But right now, we're gonna learn a little bit about our advertisements. That's right. K Who Heads, don't turn the dial. Please don't turn the dial. I I've I've said it so many times, and I'm kind of tired of having to say it. Please stop changing the channel during the ads. Please stop it. It hurts us. We'll be right back in the studio with Sarah Bergman in just a little bit. Awesome. How are we doing? You feeling good?

SPEAKER_02

Everything's great.

SPEAKER_00

So how's your book tour going so far?

SPEAKER_02

Uh, it's busy, you know. Um, I am touring everywhere. Yeah. And when I say everywhere, I'm not even exaggerating. Linden Hills. Okay. Kenwood.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I was at the Wedge, I did a thing at the Wedge, come up. Okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So you're all over just specifically the Minneapolis area.

SPEAKER_02

And uh less than two miles from downtown, I don't like leaving that area.

SPEAKER_00

So Oh, you just stick to downtown. Have you lived in downtown your whole life?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. I I I that sounds really expensive. Um, I mean, I don't I not for what you get, you know. I mean, I get, you know, I have it's parking, I get underground parking and um, you know, about five hundred square feet of space, and it's only like I think 5,000 a month. So, I mean, it's not bad. I mean, you know, but I'm living downtown. Wow.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I downsized, by the way. Oh, so yeah. Yeah, because I'm pursuing my art.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, and we're coming back from the break. That's right, K Who Heads. That was an ad for power juice. Power juice. If your tongue is numb, you're doing it right. I'm back in the studio right now with Sarah Bergman and her book, Just Follow Your Dreams. So just follow your dreams. Can I ask you why just instead of follow your dreams?

SPEAKER_02

Well, everyone says follow your dreams, but very few people say it so casually. Why are you making such a big deal about this? It's just a dream.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Follow it and be successful. You'll be fine.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Maybe some people have the gap to get over that they can't just follow their dreams because they need to make money at a job that isn't their dream.

SPEAKER_02

You know, if you're if you're working 40 hours a week, that is really going to interfere with your dreams.

SPEAKER_02

Um, have you considered uh not worrying about money so much? Because I know you brought it up a lot, and I think there's a completely fair criticism of, you know, well, what about money? What about have you have you decided, you know what, I'm not gonna like let that cloud my attitude?

SPEAKER_00

Honestly, never once. No. I um I believe in the hustle and the grind uh and um of getting out there and getting that paper and then spending it on clothes that make you look nice. Um, especially now, I'm a single man now. Um I mean I was a man before too. I just am one now, but I'm also single.

SPEAKER_02

What about dating a woman of means? Since since money seems to be like your your primary what's holding you back, why not marry into some money? Have you considered that?

SPEAKER_00

I've I mean, it sounds great, but but uh this again sounds kind of like the whole just follow your dreams, you know? Like we'll just just go ahead and do that. It's a little harder than you think.

SPEAKER_02

Um why is that hard for you? Why do you think that's hard for you to to marry into some money?

SPEAKER_00

Well, I guess I um hmm.

SPEAKER_02

You're you're a good looking man, you're young, you've got, you know, uh you've got a lot going on here. So kind.

SPEAKER_00

Do you know any women of means that might be interested in dating a radio talk show host?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I do. I know, I know plenty of. Okay. I mean I I I I all my friends. Yeah, we have we I guess we have different friends, you know.

SPEAKER_00

We definitely have different friends. I mean we never met before, so we're new friends. Right, right.

SPEAKER_02

We're new friends, yeah. Go to a go to a gala, you know, go to um, you know, go to where the people of means are, you know, go to hotel lobbies. Um there's lots of ways to meet hotel lobbies.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Uh Sarah, we are uh down to the end of our hour here for uh here on K Who Radio. Before we leave the K Who interview, we do have the K Who questionnaire. These are a couple questions that have been sent in by big, big loyal fans, just the biggest. Um also some of them are probably ChatGPT. Uh, our producer never really tells us the truth. Um, but here we go. If you could say one thing to future generations, you can get your voice out there for for future people out there to hear, uh people of means and non-means, uh, what would it be?

SPEAKER_02

I would say um don't let anything hold you back. Don't let any obstacles ever get in your way. If money is your problem, get money. Um, if if that's really what what it is. If it if if talent is your problem, go and get yourself some talent, you know? Get yourself, get just put yourself in a position to always succeed and continue doing that. And it and if it means asking your parents for money or your uncles, you know, maybe you have an uncle that I know your parents uh aren't with us anymore, but like you, you know, a great uncle, um, you know, just there's uh many, many generations of people, and also cousins, anybody you know, just just just find a way to um I'm sure they'll help you out, you know, if you need it. You know, that's okay. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's your your your future generations must know that if you want success, you have to go ahead and ask your successful already family who have financial stability, and they'll help you. And if they don't, you are just uh fucked. I said it again. I'm so sorry. I told them I wouldn't swear ever again. That's coming out of my pocket. I know, I know. Thank you so much for joining us in the studio today, Sarah Bergman, the Just Follow Your Dream Self Health book. But you, my friends, K Who listeners out there, don't you change that dial because up next we have a solid rock block of Chineo Connor. Stay tuned here at Kehu Radio 87.9
