Sunday responds to a core question that we hear being asked all over the world. 00:01:11.359 --> 00:01:18.799 The question is something like this How do we push off the decay of death that we feel all a text with this link to a YouTube, uh, not YouTube, Netflix documentary of this uh series called uh Don't Die. 00:01:36.079 --> 00:01:38.799 Has anybody seen that on YouTube, the documentary Don't --> 00:02:38.319 Right? 00:02:38.479 --> 00:02:49.360 As long as the decay of death, the effects of death don't come on, so we can dance like we're 22, young, strong, energetic, beautiful, then everything will be all right if we could just find a way to push it off. 00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:58.639 Maybe others of you uh go back a generation past, it's almost 40 years since Tracy Chapman released her epic song, Fast Car. 00:02:59.120 --> 00:03:05.680 Maybe some of you remember Luke Combs covering that a couple years ago or their famous performance together at the Grammys. 00:03:06.080 --> 00:03:10.639 The song's all about the pain that's embedded in their world. 00:03:10.719 --> 00:03:16.000 You might say the effects of sin, the decay of death that makes life so difficult. 00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:23.120 And there's a line in the car that says, You got a fast car, but is it fast enough that we can fly away? 00:03:23.360 --> 00:03:25.039 Can it get us out of here? 00:03:25.199 --> 00:03:27.680 Can we escape the decay of death? 00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:31.759 Let me give you one more example outside of the musical realm. 00:03:31.840 --> 00:03:37.840 Uh, Steve Jobs made the iPhone come to life for us, or at least people he hired did. 00:03:38.159 --> 00:03:48.400 And um, near the end of his life, he was interviewed in the uh the famous biography by Walter Isaacson, and uh he's kind of reflecting on life, and here's what Steve Jobs said. 00:03:48.560 --> 00:03:49.039 Catch this. 00:03:49.120 --> 00:03:54.879 He says, uh getting past even the decay of death, but the ultimate reality of death, listen, this is amazing. 00:03:55.039 --> 00:04:03.120 He said, I just can't accept that the body just turns off one day and it's all over, that you're gone forever. 00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:05.439 There's got to be more to it than that. 00:04:06.159 --> 00:04:14.319 We can't just be an illusion of consciousness arising from a fortuitous cosmic accident. 00:04:14.879 --> 00:04:17.600 He says, it seems like there has to be more to it. 00:04:17.839 --> 00:04:25.519 And he would go on later to say that this is actually why he didn't want the iPhone to ever have an off button. 00:04:26.160 --> 00:04:35.279 Because he thought that we would live forever in some way, shape, or form, and that the phone should tell us something about ourselves that you can't just turn off. 00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:37.279 Now, isn't that fascinating? 00:04:37.519 --> 00:04:40.959 That the phone is actually shaped by his view of humanity. 00:04:41.439 --> 00:04:49.519 But whatever the case, we're circling around this core question that humans ask all the time: Does death have the final word? 00:04:50.720 --> 00:04:56.720 And is the decay of death leading to the inevitable victory of death? 00:04:57.839 --> 00:05:04.480 And what I would say this morning is whether you're here as a Christian or whether you're not, you should want the message of Easter to be true. 00:05:04.800 --> 00:05:10.879 Because if it is true, if Easter is real, then death isn't the end. 00:05:11.439 --> 00:05:18.399 And the effects of death, the decay of death, need not be feared because there's something better on the other side. 00:05:19.680 --> 00:05:21.920 This morning we're in Luke chapter 24. 00:05:22.240 --> 00:05:27.120 The story unfolds, there are three scenes that you heard Phil read about. 00:05:27.279 --> 00:05:35.839 There's this the scene with the women, and then there's Jesus on the road to Emmaus with these couple disciples, and then there's Jesus in the room with the apostles. 00:05:36.079 --> 00:05:39.360 And we're not gonna go verse by verse through every single one of those. 00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:42.160 It's a 53-verse chapter, it would take us a little while. 00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:50.800 But what we'll see is there are three themes that emerge, and all three themes actually show up in all three scenes. 00:05:50.959 --> 00:05:54.240 And so I think the repeated themes are helping us to see. 00:05:54.399 --> 00:06:00.399 Here is the major thrust of this resurrection Sunday, that Jesus is alive, and here's what we're supposed to see. 00:06:00.480 --> 00:06:01.600 And so they're pretty simple. 00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:09.920 They're this Easter is one historical, Easter is theological, and third, Easter is transformational. 00:06:10.000 --> 00:06:12.319 It's historical, it's theological, it's transformational. 00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:14.720 I'll try and show you all three of those in the passage. 00:06:14.879 --> 00:06:20.240 I hope you keep Luke 24 open because we'll go back to that uh fairly frequently throughout. 00:06:21.439 --> 00:06:22.800 Let's start with the first one. 00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:24.639 Easter is historical. 00:06:24.879 --> 00:06:32.879 Very simply, what I mean by that is that Jesus' resurrection from the dead is not some kind of a mere spirit resurrection. 00:06:33.040 --> 00:06:36.639 It's not merely that he feels alive in your heart. 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:43.279 It's not merely a message that there's this idea of hope, but it is real history. 00:06:43.439 --> 00:06:45.600 Jesus actually rose from the dead. 00:06:45.839 --> 00:06:57.439 Now, what's really important for you to understand is that the very nuclear core of Christianity, the very center of Christianity is not rules nor is it regulations, but it's a resurrected king in his name is Jesus. 00:06:57.759 --> 00:07:00.560 He must be raised from the dead. 00:07:00.720 --> 00:07:10.560 In fact, the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15, he said that if Jesus didn't really rise from the dead, if he stayed in the tomb, then Christianity is a complete joke. 00:07:10.800 --> 00:07:15.600 That coming to church every Sunday is just a different hobby. 00:07:15.759 --> 00:07:26.560 And guys, I would say very honestly to you as a pastor, if Jesus didn't rise from the dead, then I think going to church is one of the lamest hobbies you could ever get. 00:07:26.879 --> 00:07:37.680 Like, go buy a boat, get season tickets to the cults, do something else if he's still in the grave, like every other famous teacher and leader of world religions. 00:07:37.920 --> 00:07:40.720 But if he's really alive, then it changes everything. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:42.959 And I believe he is really alive. 00:07:43.680 --> 00:07:54.639 As you read Luke 24, one of the things you see, this argument for a historical reality that Jesus really lived, really died, really rose again, is the level of detail that's included. 00:07:54.800 --> 00:08:04.560 Like it says that the ladies went to the tomb not just that day, not just in the morning, not even at dawn, but at early dawn, at the first clip of the sun. 00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:07.839 It says that they went bringing spices. 00:08:08.079 --> 00:08:15.600 It says later on that Jesus was hungry, and not just that the disciples gave him food, not just that they gave him fish, they gave him broiled fish. 00:08:15.920 --> 00:08:17.920 It screams of eyewitness account. 00:08:18.079 --> 00:08:24.399 It's like you telling somebody, we went to Chick-fil-A, and my brother got the deluxe sandwich without the pickles. 00:08:24.959 --> 00:08:30.879 Like you only give that level of detail if you were actually there, actually observing it. 00:08:30.959 --> 00:08:35.440 And that argues for the historical truth of what's being recorded. 00:08:35.679 --> 00:08:38.159 It wasn't just details that were given, though. 00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:42.320 There are specific details that say, no, this is very much a true story. 00:08:42.559 --> 00:08:50.000 One of the most significant ones is that the very first eyewitnesses of the risen Jesus are a group of women. 00:08:50.240 --> 00:08:53.120 Now look back at Luke 24 with me and read this in verse 10. 00:08:53.200 --> 00:08:56.080 This is really, really significant that it was these ladies. 00:08:56.240 --> 00:08:57.600 Luke 24, 10. 00:08:58.159 --> 00:09:09.759 Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary, the mother of James, and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles. 00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:14.159 But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:18.879 Here's why it's significant that the women were the first eyewitnesses. 00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:23.440 In that culture, the testimony of a woman was not credible at all. 00:09:23.600 --> 00:09:30.000 In fact, most of the time, women were not allowed to testify in a court of law because it would just be immediately thrown out. 00:09:30.399 --> 00:09:42.720 In the event they were allowed to testify, if you had two women say this happened and one man said this happened and it was different, they would always take what the one man said over what the two women said. 00:09:44.240 --> 00:09:50.720 So the only reason you would write that the women were the first eyewitnesses that they told the story is if it really happened. 00:09:50.879 --> 00:09:57.440 Because if you're making up a tale and you want it to be credible, they would never place it on the lips of women. 00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:00.399 So it really happened. 00:10:00.639 --> 00:10:06.639 The apostles hear the message, and their response is, oh, no way, that's an idol tale. 00:10:06.879 --> 00:10:10.159 Like, crazy women, you can't trust them. 00:10:10.559 --> 00:10:13.279 Fellas, can I give you a warning this morning? 00:10:15.200 --> 00:10:17.919 I mean, let the listener understand, right? 00:10:19.600 --> 00:10:26.960 One of the most common objections you hear about this resurrection account is that, well, everybody back in that day was gullible. 00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:28.320 I mean, they would believe anything. 00:10:28.399 --> 00:10:31.360 They saw miracles, they claimed miracles, you can't prove it. 00:10:31.519 --> 00:10:42.720 The hilarious thing to me about that objection that they said they would believe anything, is literally the people who wanted to believe it the most when they first heard the story, they didn't believe it. 00:10:43.440 --> 00:10:44.480 No, that's an idle tale. 00:10:44.559 --> 00:10:45.759 That stuff doesn't happen. 00:10:46.480 --> 00:10:47.840 What's wrong with you? 00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:53.120 No, it's this is real history being recorded for us. 00:10:53.679 --> 00:11:02.399 One of the other things that this argues for, just by the way, of the truth of the Bible, it's not just evidence that it really happened. 00:11:02.480 --> 00:11:08.399 You also have evidence here that what was written down in the Bible has not been changed through the years. 00:11:08.639 --> 00:11:08.960 Right? 00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:17.360 If you're trying to change a story to make it look more realistic, what's the first thing you would cut out that the disciples didn't believe? 00:11:17.679 --> 00:11:22.399 Like you want Jesus to look like this powerful, amazing guy that you should follow. 00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:28.720 It doesn't exactly help the case when the first disciples are like, yeah, I think he's still dead. 00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:31.840 So if you're gonna change the story, this is the thing you'd change. 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:36.080 The fact that this is still in the story tells you, yeah, they haven't been changing this thing. 00:11:36.159 --> 00:11:39.840 Like how it was written down is how it comes to us today. 00:11:40.320 --> 00:11:47.519 One of the other theories that kind of gets at saying Jesus didn't really rise from the dead is called the swoon theory. 00:11:47.679 --> 00:11:49.679 It means Jesus didn't actually die. 00:11:49.840 --> 00:11:55.440 Sometimes I like to call this the Princess Bride theory, because Jesus wasn't totally dead, just mostly dead. 00:11:57.200 --> 00:12:04.159 And so if you think about this one for a second, if uh if you get past the fact that the Romans were master executioners. 00:12:04.399 --> 00:12:08.240 I mean, they were super good at killing people and making it painful. 00:12:08.399 --> 00:12:13.519 And if they didn't kill the person, that Roman soldier, his life would be demanded of him. 00:12:13.679 --> 00:12:16.559 I mean, they had a pretty robust system in place. 00:12:16.720 --> 00:12:23.200 But if you can get past that for a second, you're still gonna have a pretty big problem saying Jesus was only mostly dead. 00:12:23.360 --> 00:12:26.879 Look at verse 13, and I want to show you how I think that can be seen. 00:12:27.200 --> 00:12:29.279 Luke 24, 13. 00:12:31.840 --> 00:12:41.039 That very day, two of them were going to a village named Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. 00:12:41.360 --> 00:12:43.440 Now, here you have another historical detail. 00:12:43.519 --> 00:12:45.840 This town that's seven miles from Jerusalem. 00:12:46.000 --> 00:12:49.679 Why does it matter that Emmaus was seven miles from Jerusalem? 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:55.120 Well, let's take the almost dead theory, the mostly dead theory, and run with it for a second. 00:12:55.360 --> 00:13:01.840 On Good Friday, Jesus is beaten to a pulp within an inch of his life. 00:13:02.159 --> 00:13:04.320 Internal organs are exposed. 00:13:04.480 --> 00:13:08.080 He's suffering from massive blood loss. 00:13:08.879 --> 00:13:36.320 And we're supposed to believe that after three days in there with no food, no water, no medicine, he didn't even have essential oils, he just pops up like he's been sleeping at a JW Marriott for three days, goes over to this 3,000-pound stone, rolls the thing up, comes out to the guards, jukes him like he's Jonathan Taylor, and then jumps into a seven-mile jog with these disciples. 00:13:36.559 --> 00:13:40.879 And they look at him and they do not say, dude, you're gonna freaking die. 00:13:41.039 --> 00:13:42.879 We got to get you to a doctor. 00:13:43.440 --> 00:13:48.480 They just start a regular conversation talking about what's been happening in Jerusalem. 00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:50.639 They open up the Jerusalem Times. 00:13:50.960 --> 00:13:52.879 And Jesus kind of plays along with them. 00:13:53.039 --> 00:13:54.559 He's like, Oh, really? 00:13:54.720 --> 00:13:55.279 What's going on? 00:13:55.360 --> 00:13:56.159 I don't know. 00:13:56.399 --> 00:14:01.360 And the one disciple, Cleopus, he looks at Jesus like, dude, have you been living under a rock? 00:14:01.600 --> 00:14:04.399 And Jesus is like, well, actually. 00:14:06.960 --> 00:14:13.120 You know, it's like that this whole like he was almost dead thing, it just doesn't make any sense at all when you read the story. 00:14:14.159 --> 00:14:21.279 I'm trying to tell you this is real history, and there's good evidence in what's written here to believe that it really took place as it was said. 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:30.240 When I was in graduate school, uh the resurrection of Jesus was one of the major emphasis, uh emphases, I should say, of my research program. 00:14:30.320 --> 00:14:33.519 And we were working towards that, and the way I thought saw it was this. 00:14:34.159 --> 00:14:35.519 I was already a Christian. 00:14:35.679 --> 00:14:39.120 I was persuaded that Jesus was king, but I wanted to go back and look at it again. 00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:48.399 And if I was gonna give my life to telling other people that they should give their life to following Jesus, then I should be really sure of this stuff as well, right? 00:14:48.799 --> 00:14:52.960 And one of my professors did this amazing study, and I've never forgotten it. 00:14:53.200 --> 00:15:03.200 He used all his grad assistants, and they surveyed every single scholar who had studied the historical Jesus over the last 50 years. 00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:10.159 Every scholar in English, in German, and in French who ever published an article about it. 00:15:10.399 --> 00:15:21.039 Every scholar, regardless of their belief system, so they surveyed every Buddhist scholar, Hindu scholar, atheist scholar, Jewish scholar, Christian scholar, all of them. 00:15:21.600 --> 00:15:25.279 Several thousand-page document putting together their beliefs. 00:15:25.440 --> 00:15:44.240 And of every single one of those, more than 95% of scholars agreed on three basic facts that Jesus really lived, and he really died by crucifixion, and after his death, his disciples believed that they saw him, and many people believe that they saw him. 00:15:45.440 --> 00:15:51.039 Like the facts are not disputed, regardless of your worldview convictions. 00:15:51.279 --> 00:16:02.879 And these appearances after he rose, it was in a one-on-one context, it was small group context, it was large group context, sometimes more than 500 people, it was in different locations all over the place. 00:16:02.960 --> 00:16:14.080 It was to men, it was to women, it was to disciples, and it was also to skeptics, people who didn't believe, who upon seeing him turned their life around and started following him. 00:16:14.559 --> 00:16:18.080 Like it's a staggering amount of evidence that's given here. for the life of Jesus and the death of Jesus, and that he was again alive. 00:16:51.200 --> 00:16:58.960 This is not just something you can dismiss, like, oh yeah, that's what my grandma believed 50 years ago when people would still believe that kind of stuff. 00:16:59.679 --> 00:17:07.599 And if you're unsure of Christianity, this is the fundamental piece that sets it apart from every other we're going to see in this passage is that Easter is theological. 00:18:43.359 --> 00:18:44.480 It's theological. 00:18:44.559 --> 00:18:48.640 And don't be scared off if you're newer with us with a 00:19:02.400 He lived the perfect life, he died a horrible death, and was raised to life as the culmination of everything he'd been about. 00:19:04.079 --> 00:19:06.000 But actually, what we're saying is it's more than that. 00:19:06.079 --> 00:19:11.119 It's not just the culmination of his life, it's the culmination of the entire Bible. 00:19:11.359 --> 00:19:13.680 The whole Old Testament has 00:19:28.640 --> 00:19:43.680 Remember how he told you while he was in Galilee that the Son of Man must be delivered, must be as important, must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise. 00:19:43.920 --> 00:19:46.720 Why do they say he must be crucified? 00:19:47.039 --> 00:19:49.920 Because it was to fulfill what the Old Testament had said about
