Arnold Schwarzenegger is promoting a drill line. You know Tim Allen had his own power tool company? Because he was a drug dealer, not an actual tool person, it probably didn't work out for him. Toy Story's crushing it though. Over the last three years, the poison I've spent literally like $10,000 plus dollars on drills. We've done more things to drills than any man should probably ever admit. And today we're looking back on some of the best and the worst drill tests and arguments that we've ever made. We get a lot of questions, and for some reason, drills are just such a hot topic in the tool space and the power tool space, the hand tool, power tool kind of world and universe. And so we've prepared a little episode for you guys where we're going to be uh giving our thoughts and opinions on like where things are and where they're going and some of the stuff that we've done in the past. Um so, Joe, walk us through. What do we got here?
SPEAKER_00We're gonna go through uh a bunch of our old videos of us battling drills. Um, relive some of those memories and good old unscrewed. Uh, then we'll go through rank everything, uh fight the the drill brands to the death to see who has the best drill.
SPEAKER_01Have uh since we've done these tests and you've used a lot of them, have things changed for you, young man?
SPEAKER_03Like in my opinions of the drills, or just in general.
SPEAKER_02Well, I know you're changing and evolving as a human every day. So yeah, let's talk about the drills. Your thoughts on drills.
SPEAKER_03I I don't think the drill battle has influenced a single opinion I've had on drills, which is so funny because I feel like a lot of people will put like their like two cents in where it's their life on it. Yeah, I have got served clips of our drill battle a lot on like TikTok, but they're not from our account. It would just be like a random account where it looks like someone filmed like a like a drill. They get millions of views. Is the have the drill battles changed your uh opinions on any drills?
SPEAKER_02To be honest, like only in like a little little little bit, right? And and a lot of it is like just starting out from the beginning is like the battery element and like the ability for the battery to stay in the tool, I think that was something super unexpected for us when we started doing all these. Yeah, and I mean at this point we've done hundreds, we've done three tiers of drills, and then there's 16 brackets. Some of them we were running like 10 times to just get something to win. And the amount of times a battery was falling out of a drill, like for like so if you're like working on a job site and the battery has becomes an issue, like like falling out of the drill or like breaking and whatnot, that was something I didn't expect to like find in that experiment, I guess you could call it the experiment for entertainment's sake. Yeah, um, yeah, and so like it kind of like like when you look at Ryobi's products and then the results of the Ryobi drills in that, Ryobi was like the main reason we had to put a lot of duct tape and a lot of like uh the things to keep the drills in because you like you like fart on that tool that the battery falls out, you know. I'm so like stick batteries that like to stay in. Yeah, and so like I that was a wild element that I was not anticipating looking into it, and it has changed my perspective a little bit, right? You have like the the Milwaukee batteries, they're the best batteries on the market, they're impossible to get out of their tools, like those by a little pinch and pull. Um, and I think it bode well for it in the in the test and stuff. So that was one thing, but yeah, I'm still grabbing like kind of whatever's closest.
SPEAKER_03And I I guess I would say the only thing it has changed my opinion on uh is I feel like I view these drills as all of them as so much more durable than I ever imagined. Like people will warn you about like, oh, don't put like a paddle bit or like a concrete mixer in a standard drill, you'll burn the motor out. I'm like some of these drills just went for like five hours straight. The motors didn't burn out.
SPEAKER_02So I mean like you're gonna smoke. I remember I do remember though, back in the day, throwing a concrete mixing bit into a DeWalt drill and into a Milwaukee drill and smoking both of them. I mean, literally burning the motors out, smoke third degree burns on my hands. Like I had to like go go to the hospital during like that uh that outdoor patio project I did with with Sam Green and Ben and Jordan back in the day. Like we were just cooking drills, cooking drills, another drill down.
SPEAKER_00We tried that one time to to break a drill. Yeah, remember you sat there for like an hour just trading.
SPEAKER_03That was the Ryobi and I think it was DeWalt.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was Ryobi DeWalt. We were just mixing concrete, so we froze them too. Yeah, they all still worked. Yeah, we run them underwater, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02That was that one was wild. That blew us away. Yeah, the super, super cheap ones had no shot at that. I'm talking like the Timu brands, the Amazon brand, those ones got cooked in that in that like whatever the hell that video was. Like extreme testing drills. Yeah, I think that's what it was, yeah. Yeah, but even like the 12 volt stuff held up considerably better than I think we were anticipating. They don't have enough like meat to not to like destroy each other like the the hammer drills and the bigger drills do, but it was such a letdown the 12 volts.
SPEAKER_00We were there for like so long. Then the video came out and did terrible, and it was just even worse. It was like a double whammy. We just got yeah.
SPEAKER_02I think all of us would have cut that video after like three tests if we weren't so invested in it already. Yeah, because the drills were just not powerful enough to break one another.
SPEAKER_00I don't know how we missed that either.
SPEAKER_02It's like watching two eight-year-olds fight. You're like, they're just not hurting each other. Yeah, they're just go hit puberty and come back.
SPEAKER_00We all sat there, we were like, oh, 12-hole drills. That's what's next. Like it's gonna be sick. I I'm surprised no one was like, maybe don't have enough power to actually go fight each other. We were just we're dumb. Oh no, no, no. I mean, we also lit the the angle grinder one, which was wild. That one was that is one of the best ideas, I think, for something, and then it just like it comes to life and is just not what you thought the idea was.
SPEAKER_02I still think it's glorious, and it's so sad that not as many people watched as watch the drill fight. That was pure stupidity. But it's just too hard to interpret if you don't know what's going on.
SPEAKER_00The first time you guys did it, you guys dropped them. We did it for a short to test it. That works so well. You guys weren't even standing by protection. You guys dropped that shit and just ran 20 feet behind. We were hiding behind, like the remember the slabs were out here. Only protection we need.
SPEAKER_03The one idea I have that will either kill the Tool Olympics bucket or it'll bring it back the belt sanders. No one cares. But if there's literally not even enough belt sanders to buy if we ride them, though. It's like those weird.
SPEAKER_02I'd rather just race around Mario Kart on like three belt sanders than buy thirty.
SPEAKER_03I've got served that clip so many times the women at the county fair just scooting on the belt sanders. That could be us just running around the shop. Dude, I I there's not even enough brands that make belt sanders anymore to make that. We probably have to source some from overseas.
SPEAKER_02Anyway, so yeah, my opinion of drills basically, as far as a practical use standpoint, has not changed at all. But the battery thing was like a big eye-opener on like you know, the flip like the more flimsy battery connections. Um, didn't see that one coming.
SPEAKER_00I think also like the metal chucks versus plastic was a big one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there is a dramatic one, I guess like dramatic uh performance in regards to like longevity of the metal chuck versus the plastic chuck. I think the plastic ones were breaking like off.
SPEAKER_00Hercules over overperformed, didn't it? As far as didn't it just break the handle broke? The chuck wouldn't break because it was pure metal for the cheap one.
SPEAKER_03See, we had so many drill battles all running together. I remember the one time the Hercules went out quick because I picked it as like my top drill. It was like first round done. Remember, he got Milwaukee the first time, too. Yeah, I don't think I've ever even come close to winning a drill battle. If I think has John won all of them, or did you win?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he won every single one, I believe. He has one. There was a couple where we were here to like I tried picking Milwaukee on the last one, thinking he picked Milwaukee the first two times, won't happen again. It's gonna be Milwaukee. I'll pick it up. No, I lost.
SPEAKER_03It's just it's not it is so funny how they're not scripted, but they all follow follow a pattern where it's like John gets the most practically right one. I try to choose an oddball that always fails. You two always make it to the finals, and there's some weird technicality that causes yours to get eliminated where it's like, well, that's the fourth battery toss, and it's Tuesday and it's a full moon. So sorry, Joe, that one's gonna get the rules. We make the rules.
SPEAKER_02We're all like four battery tosses is too many.
SPEAKER_00You also have lost rock, paper, scissors every single time. I don't know how that happens either. Every time you lost. So complicated.
SPEAKER_01I picked third on everything. I picked last.
SPEAKER_03We always, it's not even scripted. We deliberately won't choose like the main top-tier brands because it's like, oh, there's gotta be a ringer in here, something secret.
SPEAKER_02Nope. Nope. I don't I what I would love to know is do the tool brands actually like this content, or are they like, these guys are just idiots?
SPEAKER_00I'm sure like they love it if their drill wins, but they also probably hate it.
SPEAKER_02It's the worst you like we work with brands and they don't want to see them used in that capacity at all.
SPEAKER_00But if it does win, though, even though they don't like it, I'm sure they're like, hey, ours is tough. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03I know like in like top gear, a lot of car brands didn't like them doing like weird shit like that with it, where it's like, oh, we're gonna race it just on the rims or this or that. So I would assume the tool brands.
SPEAKER_00Probably dislike it. Yeah. Well, speaking of disliking something, let's go watch the first video.

Now that I'm reflecting here, I am actually sad. So John, go on a diet, you fat ass. Like watching this video again, like, golly, man. My shape changes so dramatically depending on the season and how much how many children I have.
SPEAKER_03I've had multiple people here tell me, like, man, you really aged since like they're like, I watched one of the early videos, you really aged. I guess we do look a little different.
SPEAKER_00You look very different. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You look different every week, though. Like you come in. You're like, I grew a mullet and I grew up.
SPEAKER_00Did I pick the cat, dude? Or I picked flax because you wanted flex. I picked the flex. Flex did. Joe's I was like, Sam was hyping me up. I was just a little bit like that.
SPEAKER_02It's never like No, he wanted the Hercules and he also wanted the Flex.
SPEAKER_00He told me he read we did.
SPEAKER_02You're like, let's pick two idiot brands and then just leave John with uh Milwaukee. I think Flex stood the test of time. Pretty sure I just take Milwaukee.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like you guys like you were effed. Look how bare buried.
SPEAKER_03It's not even the best Milwaukee drill, it's still on. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I don't even know what I'm saying. Look how big that heart drill was. That thing was a piece of I think it was the battery.
SPEAKER_03I don't think it was the drill that it was the first matchup.
SPEAKER_00Heart of Milwaukee.
SPEAKER_02You did. And then you two were uh you yeah.
SPEAKER_00This video's up to like three million views, too.
SPEAKER_02It's a great video. I mean, this video is so much fun. This is like the this is the dichotomy of being a creator, is like you have to try to figure out how to repeat concepts like this, and it was just so good from the beginning. I mean, obviously, we did it two more times, but you're walking through how we do it. We maybe we just do another one, you know?
SPEAKER_03I think this is like I see that fridge in the back. I think this is when I was doing that custom project that was like right behind the barrier of the two. We had a custom order just out in the back. It was so heavy, it was like 500 pounds because it moved.
SPEAKER_00Look at look at our barriers we put up. It's just OSB.
SPEAKER_02By the end, we built a fluori. Yeah. Like by the last time we tried it, we're like, we need cages, we need Plexy, we need it, we need insurance.
SPEAKER_00We had one camera I was holding, and then we had an iPhone that was in slow motion, and then I think a GoPro. That was it.
SPEAKER_03We need a medic on site for these. Uh, then we discovered the battery technique wouldn't work. Yeah, yeah. We we were oh, and some it did.
SPEAKER_02Yep, the heart battery just goes. Yeah, you weren't even in the ring at this one. Nah. This is where it was just me solo in there getting after it. One man.
SPEAKER_00Because we have the other video. The hammer drills was way more entertaining. Flex held on. Yeah, this is when I got out by the technicality.
SPEAKER_03You got Connor Madrid.
SPEAKER_00Chuck broke, and I let him come back in, and then I got eliminated off a battery Taj. You let me back in. Out of the kindness of my heart.
SPEAKER_02It's because the tooth broke, not the Chuck broke.
SPEAKER_00Tooth. Well, we use that too.
SPEAKER_03The drill broke in some way, shape, or form. See, that's something that'll happen too, and I can't remember the specifics, but like one of you guys will do the other one a favor where it's like, okay, I'll let you back in for this, but you owe me next next time, then the next time occurs, and then someone gets over. How did what was that?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, a little broken tooth on a chuck. Never hurt any, but it's still usable. We went with a drop technique. It just sheared the flex out. You didn't lose on a technicality.
SPEAKER_00The other one's a technicality. It was the maybe the hammer drill video.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it just snapped the head off.
SPEAKER_00Damn. You must have pulled it apart with your hands. I think that's what I mean.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I am that strong. You just had it break to one side. It's like ripping drills like phone books.
SPEAKER_00I forgot cobalt up there.
SPEAKER_03Cobalt didn't get a fair shake because it was tossing its battery.
SPEAKER_00It made the final.
SPEAKER_03Did it? Yeah. Pretty sure it did.
SPEAKER_02It was cobalt in Milwaukee. Because we s I think we snapped the head on the DeWalt one. Oh, battery toss.
SPEAKER_00Throwing that thing. Look at our little bit.
SPEAKER_02Cobalt took out the Walt Ram one on a battery technicality.
SPEAKER_00We just eliminated them off technicalities with batteries in the comment section.
SPEAKER_02I remember, is this the one you're the Bosch in half? Yeah, like so this is what's so insane is the how if you think like this was years ago. The most recent one we did was the 12 volts. We uh barely got these things to break. And we did probably 10 tests per test just to get them to like start like wiggling and moving and stuff. Like these were breaking on like the first, second throw, which was so fun. So much torque. We need to bring it back, Joe. There's so many more tool brands. Get it back on the docket.

SPEAKER_02I is that it cracks me up that like people have built their entire social media presence and existence around this. They have like hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of views, and they did this exactly what we did in one in two videos. Like, why did we do that to ourselves?
SPEAKER_00We also spent so much time here. Like this this hammer drill was three days.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Oh, and I mean we're like just on drills at this video, I think we're at like $7,000.
SPEAKER_03I feel like we need to do like a live drill battle, like a live stream, almost like a live event.
SPEAKER_02I don't think people would enjoy watching us just have to do it again and again and again and again. Like there's something we do like 18 times. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Well, the hammer drills, I feel like what outside of the fault it went a lot quicker than the first one. You know what would get people to keep watching it. Is there any way we could do some sort of a live betting element to it? All right, call sheet. The world is getting to be that deplorable.

SPEAKER_02How about did you guys get caught in the it was the wildest weather in Pittsburgh this weekend? Okay, wildfires were killing us. So we had we had it was smog city, right? Like insane amount of smog. And you couldn't go outside Friday. Then Saturday, vintage Grand Prix. So in Pittsburgh, it's a big deal. My father-in-law likes to take his cars down, you know, whatever. So we go to the vintage Grand Prix, sun's a shining, smog's dism, this uh dissipating, and we're all enjoying ourselves, and then bam comes thunderstorm just for 12 minutes, just like crushed us at noon. SPEAKER_02I'll tell you what, you guys, as you two get a little bit uh more into like cooking and stuff, a great way to elevate like basic things, quick pickle. Quick pickle. Oh, yeah. Whether it's on a cucumber, like start with a cucumber or or or red onion.
SPEAKER_03Oh no, I've done red onions. I've done red onions, I've done carrots, I've done uh I just don't like carrots, period. But I do agree. I like the quick pickle, like just in the jar refrigerator two, three days versus. No, no, we're talking quick pickle like I'm 30, 45 minutes.

Yeah, look into quick pickling because you'll take a basic ingredient, yeah, and then you can get like a quick injection of flavor and like a pop of of like uh some vibrancy in the meal. Like, say you go home tonight and you want to make some tacos for you and the old lady. The old lady. You know? Uh instead of just putting like chopped onions on it, yeah. Like do a quick pickle on the onion, you know, some uh some vinegar, like vinegar, some lemon, some some uh peppercorns, a little bit of garlic and stuff. Like you can you could still get it to infuse pretty well. Then you put it in the fridge and okay.

SPEAKER_00Uh before we rank them on a tier list, I guess to you guys, outside of the excessive fun that we had with the entertainment stuff with the drill fighting, what makes a drill actually like an elite drill?
SPEAKER_02I I one factor for me, hands down, will not I'll I'll fight to the death on it, is it has to have a feathered speed on the trigger. Yeah. An elite drill. Like I have to be able to control the speed of it on the drill. A lot of them don't, not a lot, but there's a bunch of drills that don't have that yet. So like if I can't feather the speed on the trigger, I don't know why, but I need it. I gotta have it. Two metal clutch.

SPEAKER_00So what makes a good drill to you, Mr. Poole?
SPEAKER_03Ability to turn left, turn right, speed one, speed two, and a clutch. I can't really say that I've used a bad modern day drill. I feel like anything built after like 2015, it's all pretty comparable. Um I'll call bullshit.
SPEAKER_02We were using the we were using something last week for one of them stupid TikTok tests, and we were both pissed off because we wasn't able to run like a paddle bit or something. Um I think it might have been a Ryobi drill. What was it? You need something with a little beef, a little oomph, a little bit of a little, I guess that's the thing.
SPEAKER_03It depends on your application. I think if you are doing like general contracting and stuff like that, you need it to have the oomph. It has to be one and done it. You want to buy once cry once. Exactly. But if you're doing more delicate work, the 12 volt all day, just say, Shut up. Buy once cry once. No, that would be a good one. What do you gotta have on that drill? No, that's I couldn't disagree more because if you're doing like strictly like cabinetry work, you don't want something that's gonna strip out a screw. You want something you don't want something that's so big you can't get in a tight spot.
SPEAKER_02That's why you need multiple gear settings.
SPEAKER_03You also need to have the speed settings and a feather until you forget you're going to attach a little euro hinge. Oh shit, it's on speed too, and the clutch is all the way up. That's like your massive overpowered drill, and then you get your 12 volt, that's like your little Miata, where it's like, well, it's not fast in a straight line. It's like it's not about that. All right, it's about the driving engagement and the cornering. You know what I mean? You cannot give an answer ever.

SPEAKER_00If you have the feature, like some of those new ones, like the DeWalt new hammer drill that we have, Milwaukee always has had great lights. The Bosch has a great light. It just makes the difference if you can't see her in a dark spot.

It doesn't take away from how good he was in high school. But he wasn't that good. He was average. He just blamed all of his injuries. Because we have those Matabos on the metal side that are like really nice. They have like the interchangeable heads. Is that another tier, or is that just older?
SPEAKER_02So Matabo bought Hitachi and those were pre-Hitachi or something. Like they they merged with another brand. I think it was Hitachi. Okay. It was. And um those are before that. So those are old. Those are like eight years, nine years old. Yeah. Um old Matabos.

And um, we've been doing some shorts to go along with it. Dude, the I'm getting lit up in the comments on people about that router. Oh, really? People love that router. Dude, they're like, John hates Milwaukee. John doesn't like Milwaukee. Like, dude, I love Milwaukee. They just don't make good carpentry tools. You're lying to yourself if you think they do, and all you're doing is fanboying and jumping on that band. You're you are a Steeler fan like I am for Milwaukee tools. You blindly believe everything they make is great. Try out something else. I'm taking the Makita palm router over it. I'm probably taking the Bosch and I'm 100% taking DeWalt's palm router over it all day long.
SPEAKER_03Everything was right about that quarter-inch uh router review, too. Because if you're if you are 100% okay with a router like that, for the money, you're better off just getting a corded one, just a corded one like that. Like I feel like the fact that the DeWalt has that adjustment like that, and I could be wrong on this, but I think the price points are almost the same. Yep. Why would you get the one with like the the more uh the far less superior? Yeah, the janky call it the shitty button.

Price point wise, yeah, also blows them out of the water. I don't know. But it's elite, dude. I love the festal drills.
SPEAKER_03I don't think I've ever used a full-sized one. Because I won't buy one, they're too expensive. I think we bought one from the battle and then had to give it away. Beat the piss out of them.

But like the rest of them aren't sedans. I don't know. The Germans love to make sporty sedans, too. They do. They do. But anyway. I think what's weird is that in the power drill world, depending on what you're trying to do, a lot of great options. Yeah, like there's a lot of really good product there. Um weirdly enough, I mean, I was just talking shit on myself not being uh anti-Milwaukee. If if I was to rank them, Milwaukee would be the worst of the four we have on the S tier. What? Wait, let me see again. Yeah. In my opinion, I'm grabbing the Milwaukee last. See and and and it's only because like I'm I'm probably going Festal DeWalt Hilty Milwaukee.
SPEAKER_03See, it's it's hard for me to grade it on just the performance of the drill because in my mind, if it was more so like which one are you gonna purchase, it'd be DeWalt or Milwaukee just strictly because I could use that battery. Yeah, the battery platform, the accessibility. Like you break something on that festal, it's like you gotta find your nearest like high-end woodworking retailer to go see, and then Earl's gonna give you a lecture about the worse with that.
SPEAKER_02I feel like the Milwaukee on the hammer drill side is just not it's just not as built up as the wall's hammer new hammer drills,
