In this episode of the Borrowed Time Podcast, we take you through our hunts for the entire first week of the Mississippi Spring Turkey Season. We take you through the ups, the downs, the successes, and the mornings where we learned how to best that gobbler on another day. We talk about how using terrain to advance on turkeys sometimes puts you right where you need to be to close the deal, and how just because its your first setup, it doesn't mean it has to be your last. In the early season spring woods, everything tends to be wide open, so choosing the right tree can be a very crucial step in assuring your success that morning. What's going on, guys? Welcome back to another episode of the Bar Time Podcast. My name is Daniel Halfacre, and I'm sitting here with my good buddy, Mr. Johnson Wells. And Seth's not here. Seth is not here. And he's not on the phone either. Nope. He didn't. Nope. He said he's done. No, he's not trying to roost the turkey, I think. Boy, some commotion going on in there. Yeah, I know. That's afraid. Yeah, Bach said he ain't gonna make it this afternoon. He's uh he's got a fella hunting with him this week. And uh said that they was gonna be trying to put one to bed, so he wasn't gonna make it. Well, maybe he's putting one to bed. Maybe so.
SPEAKER_02He's missing the podcast. Maybe, maybe.
SPEAKER_00We'll go ahead and give you all a spoiler. Seth hadn't killed one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Seth, uh, I I think everybody's wanting Seth to kill one because man, he is uh he's just not his normal Seth.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's a happy, go lucky fella, and he has not been happy nor go lucky.
SPEAKER_02He's been uh he's he's had a quick fuse lately.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he has. He's been sitting on G waiting on over somebody else.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, which I would be the same exact word. Oh, 100%. Uh he's not one of those that that he's not a weekend warrior. He can hunt uh pretty much he's been after him and he's been in them. He's been hunting every single day, so um it can be be frustrating.
SPEAKER_00Um unfortunately for him, I'm having quite the opposite of luck.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then he sees Daniel on the other hand, he's killing one every time he's hit the woods. Actually, quick stat, Daniel is three for three. Three for four, three for four. I went fried up on him. Three for four. He's hunted four days, killed three turkeys.
SPEAKER_00Which is insane. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I guess we're getting a little bit ahead of ourselves, but uh Yeah, well, that's the I mean that's the topic for stories.
SPEAKER_00Telling telling our our weekly updates. We we have some pretty good stories between the two of us. Yeah. Really between Caitlin. She was gonna be here, but she's got to put that little boy to bed.

SPEAKER_02Yeah. So yeah, she was gonna be on, but heck, I guess we can uh you started off.

SPEAKER_02Um, yeah, so I guess you want to tell about the the whole week, or you just kind of want to tell you.
SPEAKER_00You can tell because I think it kind of uh I think your hunts played into you killing a turkey. Yeah, so different turkey, but I still think it played into it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'll just kind of give like a brief uh kind of tell about the week then, I guess. So Monday I lied. Um I said last week I was gonna go hunting Monday. I lied, it was snowing and everything else. It was snowing. Yeah, like if it if the ground was frozen, we would have had an inch and a half of snow. Yeah, uh pretty thick. But so I I opted out, I didn't go.
SPEAKER_00Um 40 mile-an hour winds.
SPEAKER_02Honestly, you know, I wasn't really upset that I didn't go. I don't know how good I would have done, but all day long.
SPEAKER_00It's it's not like one of those days where you sleep in and then you're like, God, it's beautiful. Yeah, I wish I would have gone. It was disgusting.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So uh then Tuesday, that was Monday, Tuesday. Um I had a place in mind. I was gonna go and hunt, and I was literally walking out the door. I was fixing to get in the truck, and um, there's a property um not too far from my house, just right on the road. But anyways, there's a uh there's a guy he can also hunt it. And I've I've actually never met the guy before, but I saw um saw I had some text messages from him and then a missed call. And uh I read the text message, he was like, You want to go hunting this morning? And uh, anyways, I called him because I saw he had called me and I was like, Yeah, I'll go hunting. So, anyways, met the guy, super nice guy, super friendly. And uh, anyways, met with him down there and he had an idea where some turkeys were, so we made our way down there pretty close and we were sitting there and um you know if you never hunted with somebody before, you don't really know kind of what to expect. Like, you know, in in most scenarios, like if me and Daniel or me and Seth go hunting, you know, we're we're both gonna call, we're both gonna kind of do stuff. Um, but we were sitting there and it was kind of I mean, it was it was gobble time and uh hadn't heard anything. Really the birds weren't even chirping a whole lot. They were starting to wake up a little bit, but it was just it was 24 or 25 degrees, it was cold. Right. And um we sat there and he was like, I know that turkey's gotta be right over in there somewhere. And uh I was like, You want to hoot? And he was like, No, you can hoot. And I was like, Okay. So sure enough, I hooted, turkey gobbled right over there where he he said he thought it would be at. So we uh we made our way across there, got over there and set up um probably 200 yards from where the turkey gobbled at. And uh we sat down, and as soon as we sat down, he said, I'm gonna let you call. And I was like, This dude had never heard me call, like nothing, doesn't even like never hunted together. First time we've ever met the guy, and he was just like, I'm gonna let you call. And I was like, Man, I was like, he's putting a lot of faith in me.
SPEAKER_00That was his first mistake. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Anyways, uh called nothing. Um sat there for probably 30 minutes, and uh I told him, I was like, man, I was like, I think we need to get up. Uh, because I mean the sun was up, it was beautiful. I was like, there's gotta be one goblin somewhere. And uh I figured that turkey probably pitched down and he was somewhere. Um I didn't think he was anywhere close to us, but um anyways, we got up, we were making a uh we were just gonna make a big loop down through there. And we stopped, we walked probably 200 yards, and we stopped and I called, and sure enough, turkeys gobbled, and uh they were probably 300 yards from us. So we walked on up about another hundred yards and sat down and um got pretty they got pretty fired up for a little bit and uh I originally thought they were coming, then a hen started yelping back at me, and I was I was going back and forth with her. And long story short, um they ended up they were straight out in front of us, and anyways, they were going to the right, and they got they went all the way around behind us, and uh we turned on the tree, got facing straight towards them, and uh I don't know what it was, but once it once they got behind us, they started coming to us. And uh he I couldn't see, I was sitting a little bit lower than he was, but out there he said like a hundred yards there was a hen, and then there was a gobbler that was out there strutting right behind her. And uh so I was like, okay, and he said they're coming. And I was like, okay, well, out of the corner of my eye, there's a there's a blowdown out in front of us, probably 40 yards, and it's it's to his right, it's straight out in front of me where I'm sitting at. And uh I look over there and I see something, it's moving fast, and I was like, what in the world is that? But it was behind the tree, so I couldn't really tell. I knew it was a turkey, but I didn't know what it was. Right hen or gobbler. Well, anyways, I saw that red, that red and white head uh stick up behind it, and uh he came running around that tree and I said, Hey, there's a turkey right over here. And uh anyways, it stopped behind a tree and it came out on the other side, and when he saw it, he swung to his right and uh was about to shoot it, but he stopped. He didn't shoot it, and uh it started putting and it ran off. Anyways, it the other turkeys kind of worked off too. But uh it was one of those scenarios where you know I guess before you swing you need to have your mind made up whether or not you're gonna shoot before you swing. Um, but I mean it was just a mistake. But he said said the reason he didn't shoot, which is a good reason. Um he said he couldn't see a beard on the turkey. Um and he was trying to look for a beard, but in that scenario, he didn't have time to look for a beard. I mean, once you make your mind up you're gonna swing, you either need to shoot or not shoot. Um, or look and see if turkey has a beard and then swing. Right.
SPEAKER_00Um which he did right because anytime you're in doubt whether you should shoot, you probably should probably shouldn't shoot, right.
SPEAKER_02So I mean that's a good thing that he didn't shoot, but uh like you said, we're gonna be able to do it. For future reference, you know, if if if you're gonna swing on a turkey, you need to have your mind made up before you do it.
SPEAKER_00Because there ain't gonna be no he's getting out of there at that point.
SPEAKER_02Right, and he did. And um anyways, um he couldn't hunt the next day, and like I say, I have I have permission to hunt that property as well, but I wasn't gonna go to those turkeys.
SPEAKER_00Um felt a little wrong.
SPEAKER_02Right. Well, I even I even asked him um as like a second option. I wasn't gonna go there at first, but I even asked him, I was like, man, I know some people are kind of funny about this. I was like, you found those turkeys, and I I asked him, I was like, look, if I strike out in the morning, uh, I mean, you can tell me no if you don't want me to hunt those turkeys. I was like a complete understanding. He was like, No, man. He's like, go right ahead. And he was like, You have permission, just like I do. And uh so um what was that? That was Tuesday, so Wednesday morning. Um rode a bike like two miles back on the place. This is a large area um that I can hunt, and uh rode my bike two miles back. Um didn't hear anything gobble on my side of the uh the creek, and uh so rode my bike all the way back up there to where those turkeys were.
SPEAKER_00Did you ride your bike all the way?
SPEAKER_02No, I I threw that bike on the ground. That's a long story to that.
SPEAKER_00Um we'll save Shea some some grief on this one.
SPEAKER_02My little brother broke my my original bike, so he had to get me one, and it had the sorriest seat on it. Like I my my butt was bruised for like two days. I'm not even kidding. And I threw that bike on the ground. I walked back to my truck and then I rode my truck down in there to get the bike. But long story short, uh, that turkey gobbled like three times that we were on the day before, and then shut up. Um Thursday, um, I feel like I'm rambling really long, but I'm just going going through the week. But uh Thursday, um so when I originally got permission to this property, they they own it's it's three different brothers. Um they all each own different properties, but there's one large area that they all kind of hunt, and that's what I got permission on. But each one of them kind of owned individual properties, and uh, so I just I just hunted the large area. I didn't feel like I was, you know, able to hunt each individual property. I didn't want to feel like I could just do that, so I never hunted it. And uh, anyways, he he told me, he was like, Man, you can hunt any of this um because he is one of the sons to them. And so I was like, okay. And uh so I had never hunted this property before. Um showed up there Thursday morning. Um, they had just clear cut a lot of the hardwood timber off of it, like maybe a month, might have been two months ago, but they didn't cut all of it. It still has a bunch of hardwoods on it, but I I don't know what kind of cut you would call it.
SPEAKER_00There's no rhyme or reason.
SPEAKER_02It's just here and there, like where they cut it. Um Seth could probably answer that, but he's not.
SPEAKER_00Like they want to make some thick bedding or something.
SPEAKER_02I don't I don't know what the purpose was for, but um, anyways, I've never been on it, never hunted it, nothing. Showed up there. I figured turkeys were probably roosted along the edge of it. And uh, so, anyways, when I got in there, I didn't walk very deep in there. I walked probably a hundred yards in there and just stood right on the edge of the clear cut. And uh sure enough, um, turkey gobbled and he was across the clear cut. And uh he wasn't I knew I had to get across the clear cut in the woods over there with him. Um I wasn't even gonna attempt to try to call him across clear cut, which later on, knowing how that turkey acted, I probably could have. Um but I when I was making my way across there, you just had this feeling in the back of your head, like, man, this turkey's gonna see me. Because I didn't know exactly how far off the woods he was. I mean, they're open hard woods. So I mean, if he's up in the tree, I mean he can see a pretty good little way. So I was nervous walking across there, but I was like, I gotta get across here in order to hunt this turkey. So he wasn't gobbling very good. He was just gobbling like every now and then. And so I got up there and there was a a creek, and uh it was a deep creek too. Luckily, they had some, I don't know if they were trying to make a bridge with it or what, but they had some small pine trees like laid over in the creek. And uh at this point, when I got to the creek, I was probably 250 yards from the turkey. And uh I was kind of nervous. I was like, man, either I'm fixing to fall in this creek or one of these is fixing to snap, make a loud pop, I'm fixing to spook this turkey. Luckily I made it across. And uh, as soon as I got across, I sat there. That turkey hadn't gobbled in a little while, and I was like, man, I know this suckers done seen me. So I stood there and uh I even hooted. I was like, man, I just want to know if he's gobbling or not, still, like if he seen me, hooted, nothing. I was like, oh man. And uh, so anyways, it wasn't just a minute later, a crow flew over. I was like, okay, we're we're still good. And uh so I eased right up there and uh like I say he was roosted probably 150 yards off the cutover, and the way the cutover did is it it was a straight line out to 40 and then it made a curve back to the left, kind of back up in there where he was at. And so I was like, man, if I can if I can get up to this turkey, if he'll walk around that curve, I was like, I can I can kill him. And so that was my plan, and so I sat down, it was still pretty dark, but I tree up to that turkey, and when I tree up to him, he went from barely goblin to non-stop goblin. Turned it. I mean, just over and over and over. And I was even videoing, and you can tell in the little GoPro video, I was sitting there telling, I don't know if this will ever make it to YouTube, but I was sitting there telling them, you know, in case it did, you know, what was going on. You can hear it in the background, just ow, ow, ow.
SPEAKER_00And uh that's always a nervous, very nervous part of the morning whenever you make that first yelp.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know, because you don't know what what he's gonna do.
SPEAKER_00How he's gonna react.
SPEAKER_02And uh anyway, I literally just did one tree up. That was it, didn't do anything else. He started gobbling, and uh, I was like, okay, well, it started lighting up a little bit, and I noticed um to the left, I mean in the woods, it was a whole bunch of um uh bamboo that was growing up, and then they had you know trees from log and they had pushed up in the edge of the woods, and I was like, man, I was like, I in my head, I would like for this turkey to pitch down and walk around that curve. I was like, but that joker could walk up there to 15 yards in the woods and I'd never get a shot at him, wouldn't even see the turkey. And uh not only that, you know, if he popped out at 10 yards in front of me, I probably wouldn't be ready. Right. And uh so I got to looking on the map, and uh there was two roads that went into this little greenfield. One of them went straight down the middle of these hardwoods, and if I'd have walked it, he'd have seen me playing his day. And uh the other one kind of followed this creek. It came into the left side of the greenfield back there, and the greenfield, he was roosted probably 200 yards from the greenfield. So I walked the creek and uh got back there and I sat down. And like I say, I'm a I guess I'm a sucker for bins in the road. I just feel like as soon as they pop around the bend, I can kill them. And uh, anyways, the road that went down through the middle of the hardwoods and came in from the right of the greenfield, right before it came into the greenfield, there was a little bend in the road. And so I was like, man, this is perfect. I was like, this turkey could pitch down, walk this road and walk, walk as soon as he rounds that corner, I can kill him. It's probably 30 yards to the to the curve. And uh, so I sat down and I I don't know, I wasn't really thinking of my setup, um, but I'll get to that in a minute. Anyway, as soon as I sat down, that turkey had done pitch down, and I believe he was standing out there in the clear cut where I just yelped from. And he was out there.
SPEAKER_00Gun range for sure.
SPEAKER_02Just just gobbling. And I was like, man, I could probably have his turkey dead by now. But I was like, oh well, there's nothing I can do about it now. So I yelped to the turkey from my new setup, and he gobbled at me twice, just double gobbled. And uh I was like, dang, okay. And uh so I shut up, didn't do anything else, and he shut up too. And when he shut up, I was like, that sucker's moving. Like I he's gotta be moving. Because otherwise, when he was sitting still, he was just steady gobbling. And uh sure enough, it wasn't but just a little bit later, um, he gobbled and he sounded like he was on the road coming right down to me, and I could hear it in his chest, and you could obviously tell he was a lot closer, and so I was like, Okay, awesome, this is perfect. So I went ahead, I clicked my safety off and uh sat there for a minute, Joker gobbled again, he was straight out in front of me, right behind the curve in the road in the woods, and I was like, Well, crap. And by that time I could hear him drumming, and I was trying to course his drum, and it sounded like he was going left. So I I had my call in my mouth, and I started throwing calls back to my right, trying to get him, you know, to come back to me. And uh when I did that, it doesn't didn't do anything but make him gobble. And uh you could tell he was going left. Well, I was like, okay. So I had a tree. Normally I wouldn't do this, but I was banking on that sucker walking down the road, which was kind of dumb because the greenfield was to my left.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_02And uh I hindered myself to only having a shot really in the road. I didn't set up to where I could shoot the greenfield and the road. Right. And uh anyway, so in order to turn to shoot the greenfield, I had a a little sapling that was out in front of me that if I swung, my barrel was gonna hit it. So, anyways, I saw he was going left, so I went ahead and I got my gun and I put it on the other side of that sapling. I was sitting there and I had just like a few little gaps here and there that I could shoot through. Well, it wasn't but like a minute later, turkey gobbled, and I could tell he was in the greenfield in gun range, but I couldn't see him. It was a bunch of little trees out there. I couldn't see the turkey, and I was like, man, I ought to be able to see this turkey out there somewhere. Well, he was like half strutting, and then he'd stop and he'd gobble, and then he'd he'd just go back to walking. And uh I saw his white head going through those trees. Well, I saw he was walking straight across that field, and if he'd have kept walking, he'd have got straight behind me. And uh so here again, my setup wasn't very good. I had another little sapling that I had to get my gum barrel on the other side of. And so while he was walking, I went ahead and I did it. How I got away with all this, I really don't know. Um, but I got it on the other side and uh I saw his head just bobbing down through there. He was just walking. And uh there was probably a gap between two trees that was maybe a foot wide, and I was like, if he steps in that gap, I'll shoot him. And uh sure enough, one but a second later, I saw his head come bobbing. About as soon as his head hit the gap, I cut at him twice, and he ran his head up. I shot him. And uh man, I had the GoPro set up and everything. And uh I went out there and I grabbed the turkey. I was talking to the camera, telling them what was going on. I was like, yeah, I was like, you know, it's not great footage. I mean, you can't really see the turkey. Good enough. But I was like, you know what? I mean, there's there's plenty of people out there that post stuff like this, and I love watching. Right. And uh so I was telling them, you know, what was going on. I was like, man, this is great. Well, I watched the footage back while I was sitting there. But it like uh it cut like the sound out. Like it's like you can't even like hear me talking. Like at all. At all. And like there's there it's not when it wasn't windy, yeah, nothing. It wasn't on up against my leafy jacket, like I was holding it. Right. Just sitting there talking. And I mean, you can't the only part you can't hear? No, you can't like when that horse was gobbling at 30 yards, you can't hear it. And I had it clipped to a tree, yeah. Like out away from me. And I mean, you you still couldn't hear it. But like then the other day I went with Seth and I mean I clipped it on a tree, and you hear everything great. So I don't know, I don't know what's going on with it. I don't know. Like I say, I I don't know what I did. All I ever do is just hit the record button.
SPEAKER_00Factory mic on the GoPro. It's good. There's turkeys out there at 300 yards and it sounded like they were on the city.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know it's good most of the time. I don't know I don't know what's going on with it, but uh, I mean, this is the second year I've had it, so I mean it's it's new. Right. Um, but if any of y'all have any info on that that could help me out, I'd appreciate it. Yeah. But um, yeah, that one uh he made me made me feel like a champion, made me feel like I knew what I was doing. But um then uh let's see, that was Thursday. Friday, went with Seth, didn't really well we got on turkey at like nine o'clock at a uh place that he has. And um heck thought he was coming. He got him. I mean, he he got to about maybe a hundred yards, almost broke a hundred, got fired up for a little bit, and we heard a hen yelp. Um and that was that was pretty much it. I promise I'm fixing me done talking. I'm just getting all my stuff out of the way. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Then I'll let 'cause I you got a bunch to tell me. Um, and then uh we went yesterday and was gonna go hunt the same turkey, the one I mean, because that turkey was gobbling at like ten o'clock when we went hunting him. And uh so we both thought, man, that's a killable turkey, might be able to kill him right off the roost. Yeah. Went Friday afternoon, heard the turkey gobble on the ground, didn't ever get him to gobble on the roost. But I don't know, that place is weird, it echoes really bad, so it's kind of car hard to uh, you know, of course where the shit was.
SPEAKER_00Might not even have been where you thought he was.
SPEAKER_02Right. And uh so, anyways, we got closer there Saturday morning, and there wasn't a turkey that gobbled. Hey, we weren't 600 yards within a turkey. And uh so we went to the closest one that was gobbling after we got all the way back there across five sloughs, and then uh he shut up. Um went to another property. Um it was about 8 30 and uh got out and uh we were planning on walking the whole property, but as soon as we got down in there, uh I yelped and uh turkey gobbled probably 200 from us, and so we got sat down and uh got got fired up with him and he was gobbling good. And uh you could obviously tell from the first time we we yelped at the turkey, he was he was advancing on us. He was coming. So we got set up and uh last time the turkey gobbled, he was probably 80 yards from us. And uh I I had the video going and everything, and uh whatnot but a second later, Seth was like, I see him. And uh he was coming hard to the left, and I was on the right side of the tree, and so they came all the way up. He was spun like I had the the the turkey, I had a tree in between me and the turkeys. I couldn't even see the turkeys. Um but I had the video camera run around there and I was trying to get it on them, and um anyways, I asked him, I was like, How far are they? And uh he's like they're about 28 yards. And uh he was like, he's like, Can you see them? And I was like, No, I was like, but heck, screw the camera, shoot them when you can. He was like, All right. And uh anyways, then he was like, wait, he's like, I think that front one's a Jake. And I was like, Oh, okay. And I was I was thinking, it ended up being two of them, and I was like, all right, that other one's gotta be a gobble. Because, dude, the way this turn gobbled would have never guessed. Right. Never even thought it could have been a Jake. Well, sure enough, the other one popped strut and he said, They're both jakes. And I was like, Are you serious? And he was like, Yeah, they're both jakes. They both got jagged fans, and I was like, Golly, can you please grow like six more inches, please? Like in the matter of a second. Yeah, please. Because Seth's been having a hard time. I was wanting him to kill one so bad. Um which we we're having a pity party for Seth. He ain't gonna have no problem killing one.
SPEAKER_00He's gonna get it.
SPEAKER_02Um, just coming a little, a little harder than usual for him, I guess. But um, yeah, so that was that. Um, so yeah, I know I I think I rambled for like 20 minutes there. But uh anyway, so yeah, that's that's the whole week for me. Um, so I guess we'll let you go. You uh you got two days worth, but I mean it's uh a lot going on in two days.

SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, I didn't uh I couldn't hunt until Friday is just you know the way it is. Uh anyway, I was able to go Friday, so I went to a place that News from Turkeys were where me and Caitlin killed uh opening day. Went and was hoping they were were close to where they were. I went ahead and committed and it's it's a bottom, like I've said before. So I knew I had to get in there early. And uh so I was in there black dark, man, like black dark. And the whole time you're walking, you know how it is walking in the in the woods before anything wakes up. It is just steel. Plus the leaves are dry. Yes, the leaves are dry, and I was like, I'm making so much noise. So, and I've heard people say it, the best thing you can do is just sound like animals walk through that bottom all night. You know, I have a camera close by, I see deer all night walking through, raccoons, stuff walk through there. So just sound like a deer, sound like something. You know, a human is typically gonna just, you know, the whole time. Right. So stop every now and then, make it be realistic like a deer, looking, smelling, whatever. Just was trying to make it real realistic, whatever. I might be thinking too much into it, but whatever. It ended up not mattering. They weren't really there, they were roosted 300 yards away from where they had been roosting. Uh, but like I said, I hadn't been, so I didn't know. Anyway, got there and uh I got to a tree I wanted to where they had been, it was within shooting range, uh, within 30 yards from where their feet touched the ground opening morning. So I was like, I'm gonna be there. If you know, I can always move a little bit maybe if they're roosted somewhere else, but I need to be there or else I can't get there once they gobble. So they ended up gobbling probably 200 yards from there. I advanced about 50 and got to a good setup. And I guess I should go ahead and say I was trying to complete my fantasy football punishment with the 410 and box call. And I got pre-uh approval to use my scratch box, which you know, if anybody knows, you can do a lot of soft stuff on there. So that was gonna be my getting close call slash tree helping call anyway. So I did, uh I got set up, got the camera on, and and I was I felt really good about my setup. They would have had to come 30, 40 yards before so they could see this whole little area. It was just a bunch of blowdowns. They had to come around to see me. So uh anyway, turkey was gobbling. It was just one, and uh, hit that scratch box just a little yelp, and he fired off, and then a couple more fired off to the right, probably 150 yards to his right on a creek. And uh anyway, morning progressed, and and that turkey would gobble, and maybe those other two weren't gobbling near as much. It was mainly just this one turkey that I was originally set up on, and um anyway, hit my scratch box a little bit, and that's really the only times the other turkeys would gobble when I hit my scratch box and kind of interacted. And they they would gobble and then he would gobble, and then he'd keep gobbling, he'd gobble at a crow, he'd gobble at anything. He'd he was just gobbling like crazy. He was on fire that morning. And anyway, uh I heard actually I saw those turkeys pitch, and and like I said, there's a creek and it does all kind of winding and curving, and I'm on like what I call a little peninsula, same same peninsula I talked about last last week. Anyway, those turkeys flew down on the other side of the creek, and this creek's deep. I can't I have to go back 250, 300 yards for me to find a place to cross. There's no trees down, it's eight foot deep, I can't cross it. Uh those turkeys I was originally set up on, I never saw them, I never heard them pitch down or anything like that, but they just they went silent, or he went silent, and he had not been silent all morning. I thought for sure he was gonna hit the ground and say something, but he didn't. Anyway, those turkeys to the right, they they kind of got fired up. And I what I assume happened is those other ones kind of sailed and and ganged up with them because once maybe once or twice they kind of all gobbled, and you know how it is. It's just like you don't really know how many it is, you know it's more than one. So I at that point they were probably 150 from me. I had a bunch of bamboo in front, and and they were gonna, they were acting like they were gonna walk their side of the creek, but it worked perfectly because there's a pine thicket on the other side of the creek. Probably it pinched them down to like 15 yards of hardwoods right there that I figured they were gonna walk. And if they did that, they were gonna be about 30 yards from me on the other side of the creek. However, I'm I'm right-handed, so I'm sh I'm set up to shoot and swing right, not swing left. So I switched and I just was like, well, at this point I can't really move. He I can I can hear drumming really loud. The turkey that was gobbling was probably 150, but I heard this turkey drumming, he had to be 80 yards, like, you know, within 100, because just the way he was rattling my chest with his with his drumming. So I switched to shoot left-handed. I have a little, there's a little red dot on that 410, so I felt confident enough to shoot left-handed. Yeah, I even cocked a hammer back. Like I thought 100% this turkey was funny, just keep walking. I didn't really say anything because, like I said, I'm using that scratch box. I can't really, I don't have the liberty of doing everything. I probably didn't need to call anyway because once he came around that bamboo, he was gonna be within range and I was gonna be able to kill him. Well, the drumming, I kept hearing those other turkeys, they kind of started gobbling and they kind of were drifting. But I could still hear that drumming, but then it got a little bit faded, more faded, whatever, kept going the other way, and I was like, all right, well, I'm just gonna sit here a minute and let them get out. Then I'm gonna have to do that, retreat back 250 yards, cross the creek, make a big loop. Like I said, well, they they got out there, I hit them with my box call about 250. I was like, okay, well, they're they're out of range. They're clearly drifting that way. I'm gonna get out, make a huge loop around them. I did, went way around. Uh I was I was about to go start my descent down into the bottom. Turkey gobbled, and and he was had to have just been another turkey I didn't hear because he was way ahead of this group and he was in the bottom, and I was like, darn, I don't really know how I'm gonna uh I don't really know how I'm gonna play this because it's all it's cut over. They haven't cut over, they hadn't cut all the trees, but there's a big portion of it that I had to walk the edge of to get down into the bottom, and the sun's at my back and it's just skylining me. It's just not a good situation, but there was no other way. I was like, I just got to get to that group of trees right there. And this turkey was gobbling at every crow. Every now and then I'd hear the group over there. But I this turkey was just on his own, and I was like, if I can get to that turkey, I can kill that turkey. Well, like I said, I made my advancement. I got to those trees, never said another word. I I thought I'm I'm fairly certain that I spooked that turkey. Um at that point, there's not really anything I could do, you know. Whatever. There's no use in crying over spilt milk. I I'm pretty sure I spooked him. Once I crossed the creek and got in the bottom and I turned around and I looked at where I walked down, I was like, oh, there's there's no there's no way he didn't see me. There's just no way. I didn't know that he could, but you know, that's just part of it. I made a mistake. But those other turkeys were gobbling. I was like, I gotta get in there, I gotta get in front of them or else I'm out of the game. I've said it before, they get in the middle of this bottom. You can't do anything with them. But they were neck down, getting from one side of the bottom to the other with that slew in the middle. They had to get around it, so I was like, I gotta get out there. Well, I I didn't make it. I got they they made it to the bottom before I did. Turkey started gobbling. I sat back and uh once I once they got, I got them to gobble with the box call, and and there was, like I said, they kind of split up into two groups, one at about 200, the other one was like I could just hear their gobble. But every time they would gobble, the closer turkeys would gobble, like cut them off, like they wouldn't even be finished with their gobble. It's like they were, you know, trying to start a trying to start a fight or something. But so I just started trying to respond to that farthest turkey. He would gobble and I'd yelp, and then they would gobble. Like almost like I was hoping to get them fired up. Anyway, I advanced about a hundred yards and got to a blowdown. At this point, I'm probably 200 from them. I never could hear drumming or anything. I never really was in the game. I only reason I'm saying this because it plays into the story for you know what happened the next day. But anyway, those turkeys ended up. I left them gobbling. I had to get to work. I was already super late, but I just had to leave them gobbling. You know, that's that's a super hard thing to do, but I just there's nothing I could do. The only way that's I called you, I was like, the only thing I can do to kill these turkeys is gonna be hang with them, and I just can't. That's today's not one of those days I can hang with them. It's already 9:30. I was supposed to be at work at nine, so I gotta get home. Anyway, that uh that next day, and y'all are gonna think I'm crazy for this considering all the turkeys that I just tell y'all I heard. But me and Caitlin, we're planning on going to a different property, one that we kind of save. Turkeys, it's not really a very big property, but it's paid off for us in the past because you just wait till the timing's right. You go in and the turkeys always act right, especially if they roost in one sp one particular place that they always tend to roost. I had some turkeys on camera the day before. So we I went there that Friday afternoon. I was like, I'm pretty sure I could get these turkeys to gobble on the roost. I said, if not, you know, whatever, it ain't hurting nothing. I can kind of be, it's not intrusive at all to see if I can hear them. I went in, I hooted, gobbled, I was like, perfect. I mean, he gobbled 10 times, started getting fired up, actually, uh, gobbling at himself, just gobbling everything. I was like, my goodness, this is from my experience. If one gobbles like that in the roost in the afternoon, the next morning's gonna be phenomenal. So we got in there really bright and early, set up right where like I sent you the pen. There was a turkey that roosted almost in the exact same spot last year, and he flew down and I killed him, and we sat on that same tree Saturday morning. I was I felt very confident. Turkey gobbled, and I was like, that's perfect. He's right where I was hoping he would be. And uh, once again, I'm still trying to do my little scratch box challenge, whatever. So hit the scratch box one time, cut me off. I was like, all right, it's perfect. He stayed in the tree, what I would say would be a little late. He probably didn't fly down until 7.15 or so. Anyway, maybe 720, something like that, a little bit later, not really so late, but I figured he would have fallen down a little earlier. Anyway, about that time, um, I saw him, I saw a turkey fly. I was like, perfect. But he stopped in a in a tree out there about 70 yards, about 10 foot up. I was like, what in the world? That's just weird. But what he was kind of reaching in some pines and it's open hardwoods in front of me, so I guess he just couldn't make it. Or maybe he just was trying to get a better view. I don't know. Then another turkey flew down and he flew to the ground. Then another turkey and another turkey. And then that fourth turkey that was in the tree, he just stepped down off the limp and one went in a strut and I saw his fan immediately. And I was like, that's a Jake. I was like, darn. I was like, that's there's no way the turkey we've been listening to all morning is a Jake. And um about that time, I was like, oh my lord, please just let there be a gobbler behind them that I'm not seeing. Caitlin's on the gun, uh, and she's right next to me, and and they start making their way, and I'm just like, please let there be a long beard. Please let there be a long beard. And I well, first one comes through, he's a Jake. Second one, Jake. Third one, Jake. But the strutter, I still can't see him back there. I'm hoping maybe I uh maybe I just saw wrong. Maybe you don't have a jagged fan, but he and it ended up being four guy bunch strutting jakes, and they came in there at 40 yards, and and that could have got him closer, but at that point, you know, you kind of get a little frustrated. I understand it's still a good morning in the woods, but we have very limited mornings. Right. We have very limited mornings, so we're like, darn, we knew where some other turkeys were. We were just kind of betting on this spot. And and it worked, it would have worked out phenomenally if they just were one year older.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But you know, that's just the name of the game. They weren't. So they ended up working off, and I told Caitlin I said, I'm not calling to them no more. There's no need in pestering them. We need to get to another spot with some more turkeys, and you know, while some turkeys are fired up. They moved out. We uh hopped in, walked out, got to the truck, and we we went to another place and pulled through in the gate at 8 15, and we walked, walked up where I knew it's the same place that I was that Friday morning. I walked, I got to the top of the hill in the pines, hit a crow call, a Toby Dean crow call, hit my mouth crow call. That's right. And that sung ungobbled, and I was like, perfect. He's right where I had left one goblin that morning in that bottom, the morning prior. We worked our way down and we were on the skinny side of the bottom where that creek is going around the slough. So we were going and weren't really going as slow as we should have been, because like I said, this turkey was gobbling, and after he gobbled at that crow, he started getting fired up. Like you could, it was, I don't know, the turkey hunters will know it's you knew he was trying to gobble up a hen.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He was not gobbling, he was gobbling very aggressively very often. So I was like, we got to get to him, and we've got to be the first hen to yelp and and get him in there. And and I knew we were gonna have to go up and cross a beaver dam to get on his side of the um, get on his side of the bottom. Went up and we flew, we we bumped about eight hens all by themselves. I don't think it was any gobblers with them on our side of the creek. Well, the majority of them flew towards that turkey. I was like, crap, that's that's not good. I w at first I wasn't even thinking of the fact that they were gonna go to him. I was thinking in the fact of, oh no, I I spooked those hens, they're gonna fly to him, get in the tree around him. He's gonna be spooked and he's not gonna gobble. Yeah. Well, as soon as we crossed the creek, I yelped, he gobbled. I was like, all right, we're still in the game. Those hens kind of quickly vanished from my mind. Well, he he started gobbling, and and once again, I sound like a broken record, but I couldn't really advance on him anymore because it's a wide open bottom. And um, it was 8 30 whenever he gobbled. I don't know if I said that, but it was 8 30 first time he gobbled across the creek, got on him, and uh he was gobbling good. I wasn't calling too much. We we kind of were in some thick stuff, it's some thick stuff along that creek, so I was hoping maybe he just couldn't see well enough that he would have to come in. Caitlin advanced up a little bit. She was probably about 100 in front of me, so she had to have been 125 from the turkey. I thought she was gonna see him any minute. He's gobbling. He'd drift to his right, and then he'd drift back to his left, and he'd drift to his right, and I texted Caitlin, I was like, the next time he drifts far left, try to swing around right. And but and any it anyway, he hit it never ended up drifting again. He he shut up on us. And uh looking back, he definitely just gobbled up one of those hens and was with one of those hens and and was uh was breeding one of those hens or multiple of those hens. I don't know. But anyway, right before he shut up or as he was as he shut up, I started hearing a turkey gobble to our left across this slough. And uh, of course, you know, hindsight's 2020, of course. If we would have just sat, we would have ended up killing this turkey after an hour and a half of silence. But you know, that's not really hard to do. It's hard to do, especially when another turkey's gobbling 300 yards away. I think nine out of ten turkey hunters would have walked 200 yards to try to get on these turkeys. Well, we did. We walked, and and I at this point I had not called to these turkeys. Uh I was just crowing with my mouth and they'd gobble and I was like, all right, we need to move up. Well, we crawled, got around the slough, got on their side of the bottom, and at the back of this slough, there's a creek that comes out and kind of winds through the bottom, a different creek. Uh, not really a creek, just a body of water. And uh at that point I wasn't sure if the turkeys were on that side or our side of the creek. And when we got around the slough, they gobbled to a crow, my crow, and they were they were off a good ways. And I was like, all right, we need to advance as as far as we can. At this point, it had already been probably an hour and a half of being on that other turkey, and so I was like, maybe we need to play this one a little more aggressive. I don't know how many mornings you get to have that many different opportunities to do different setups, but we were blessed with that morning. Right. So, you know, sitting back on that first turkey didn't work, maybe let's try to be more aggressive with these turkeys. So we made an aggressive push and we pushed up probably a hundred yards. And uh, because at that point I knew they were on the other side of that creek. I was like, we gotta get at least to that creek, maybe can get them excited enough to come around, maybe can get them excited enough to fly. These turkeys live in that bottom, they pitch across that creek a hundred times a day. You know, that's it's not something that they they don't do. Well, uh when I got up there, I just did something very light just to test them. I always do something really light in case a turkey's close. I don't want to just blow his ears out. Right. So I did something light and they jumped on it and they were close. I guess I don't know, I can't remember if they I don't know if they heard us walking up there or what, but they were just on the other side of that creek. And as soon as we had already sat down and I heard drumming, I was like, oh man. I was like, they're they're right on the other side of that creek. And of course, there was some thick stuff on both sides, on our side and their side. Any long story short, they ended up moving, kind of following the creek to the left, which is perfect. It's what I wanted them to do because the creek kind of plays out out there, and I thought they were just we're gonna come around and come right up, and Caitlin was gonna kill them. And um, well, they didn't, they just kept on working off, and I told Caitlin, I was like, if they go, if they keep working off, just go straight to them. I've seen the Hunt in Public video, and I've been I've hunted hardwood bottoms enough to know like I don't know, maybe somebody's seen it, but Aaron was just showing they had the camera back at turkey height in the hardwood bottom and was videoing him move in a bottom. Oh, you're talking about like walking straight to them.

SPEAKER_00Yes, don't walk across. That's what I told Caitlin. That's true. I said walk straight to them. Like if when they gobble, find a big tree that's between you and them, walk straight to that tree. And uh she advanced on them a good bit. They just got so far out of my bubble, out of the bubble that I, you know, the hype hypothetical bubble that I have. But they just they weren't worried about me anymore. Well, guess what? Old buddy from earlier started gone. I was like, and I'll be dang. Guess where he was gobbling? Right where y'all were sitting there. Right where we were sitting the first time. But once again, another hour and a half had done gone by. Let me see if my math maths right there. Yeah. Yeah, about about another hour had gone by. So at this point, we had been working turkeys two and a half hours, two and a half, three hours. Well, we uh we she had done come back to my tree, sat down. She was like, What do you want to do? And I was like, Well, I don't know. This turkey's gobbling. It's like, yeah. I mean, how do we not? I mean, like I said, we've been after we're she's got a bum leg at this point it was 1130 eleven yeah probably eleven thirty eleven fifteen we haven't had a sip of water all morning I don't have a vest on my back she doesn't have I don't think she has her vest so we don't have any water don't have any snacks we're we're I mean we're down we're down bad right and um but you can't leave because we can't leave man that someone's gobbling we're like you know whatever we'll be thirsty later that turkey gobbled and I was like well we gotta walk towards him to get to that beaver dam anyway so let's go see what he's gonna do well once again we crossed that slough got around that slough and actually we were even with that slough right before we crossed the little beaver dam little beaver whatever you know what I'm talking about that little dirt bridge to get into that bottom and uh man turkey gobbled and and sure enough he's within gun range of the tree we were sitting on and calling from I was like man you know you you're playing all these back in your head if we just would have sat but no way we it's really hard to sit there and it's hard to sit even when even when other turkeys aren't gobbling it's hard to sit for an hour and a half you know what I mean just sitting there calling every 10 minutes. Sometimes I do you know sometimes I do there's a time and a place for that but those turkeys were gobbling so of course we were going to go after them. Right. And uh anyway Turkey ended up gobbling right where we were sitting and and nothing we could do at that point. And I was like honestly this is my favorite setup we've had all morning. You know how it is it's really thick right there in that little sliver. Yeah I was like if we can get him to cross that there's tracks all over that little dirt bridge. I was like they walk that bridge I say bridge it's just like we're a beaver dam something I don't know but there's tracks all over deer tracks turkey tracks raccoon tracks everything. I was like they've walked that bridge before I love our setup he has to cross that bridge and come look for us to get us and at this point he's jumping on my call he sounds like he wants it. So I said let's just sit here. Well we sat probably for 15 or 20 minutes and uh he was just he'd gobble on his own every every so often every five 10 minutes he'd gobble and uh it sounded like he was drifting. Well I told Caitlin I said move up to where you can see that bridge that little dirt bridge I said so maybe if he's coming and and just looking you can kill him. You'll be 40 from the other side of it. You can kill him when he comes to the comes and starts looking and she got up there and and the turkey didn't gobble and I I hit the box call he didn't gobble and I was like well so well we got to move up anyway to get to that beaver dam to go. I said I said I'm gonna come up there where you are well I was walking up there and uh sure enough he gobbled on his own again. I was like my goodness and at this point he had been quiet for 30 minutes. Looking back I think he had gobbled up another hen and was breeding that hen and then he and then he started gobbling again uh which worked out well for us. Anyway we got up there she had done cross the dirt bridge and she had done got way I say way she had done got up there about 100 yards from me because this turkey had drifted back out into the bottom at about 300 from where I was about 200 from where she was I got up and I was texting her I was like can I cross that dirt bridge and just get up there close to you because we were going to try to skim and do a game plan. She was like yeah well I crossed the dirt bridge and as soon as I came up the dirt bridge there's like this little buckeye bush and it's real shady up under I'm in the middle of the sun everything there's no shade around me I was like the only shade's up under that buckeye bush so I was like I'm just gonna lay up under there. I'm at that point I'm 25 yards behind Caitlin I can see her can at least you know see where her guns point and know what's going on well I was like I'm I'm just gonna get fired up with this turkey. Caitlin's had a good he had done drifted off like I said he was about 200 250 from her and I hit the box call and he he gobbled and I told Caitlin I was like look go to this turkey and I hate to say it I said but you're either going to bump him or you're gonna kill him I was like and if the hardest part is just getting to where you can see that turkey. Once you see him and if he is by himself like we think he is he's gobbling like you can know when to move there's enough trees if he if he goes in a strut and he's facing away from you you can advance and and there's there's enough little dips like little creeks and little bodies of water little dips you can get down in and kind of be hidden from anything really so I told her I was like look go at him once you see him then you're gonna know when you can move and I said it's gonna feel risky so but just go straight at him. I will call enough to keep him gobbling so you keep moving. I said as long as he's gobbling you keep moving. I also knew if she ever could get close enough and hears drumming she also could course him and then you know even when he's not gobbling know where he's at well she was like I don't know I'm scared she was anyway ended up doing it. So she just took off she of course she was low she was I don't know if she was on her hand and knee hands and knees or if she's on her belly I don't know um I couldn't see her anymore but I was like I'm just gonna keep this turkey gobbling I'd I'd cut on my box call and he'd gobble I'd I was like all right I'm just trying to get him fired up. So maybe he would break and come in a little bit too well what I didn't know is Caitlin had done moved up about a hundred from her original setup that was 25 in front of me. And when she did she came up out of this little dip and there's a bunch of there's a bunch of cane around this this oak tree around not really an island but it's where a creek floods and it gets in these little depressions and creates a depression really and it's kind of some water hangs out there. But anyway she came up out of one of those depressions to an oak tree and was got behind it peeked around and sat down on that oak tree and then she saw him pop in a strut and she and and and then that's when she said I see him I said good but don't stop. Now you know when you can move keep going she had another dip in front of him at that point it was game on for her she she knew what she could do she knew what she needed to do. So she she got down in that little dip right in front of her and she got she started crawling and at this point she was on her belly I know that because there was mud and everything on the front of her so she got down in that she was soaking wet but she got down in there and every time she'd go down in one of those depressions we were talking about it on the walk on the walk in before we even heard a turkey she was like uh she was like I really need my mouth calls but I forgot them I was like well just do something with your mouth and so she started purring with her mouth I was like that actually sounds really good yeah I was like I can't purr on a mouth call if I ever need to purr I just purr with my mouth and um she she started purring with her mouth and and clucking. I was like that sounds really good. She was like you just saying that I was like no that sounds like a turkey anyway so every time she'd go down one of those depressions she'd purr and she'd she'd scratch a little bit well she she came up out of the depression and she'd she'd watch him he'd you know he'd look he'd he'd periscope go in a strut and at this point she said that he was still just kind of hung up out there. Well she had one more dip in front of her and then she was going to come up on this little high point where some oak trees were and and some brush was down she was like I I got to get to that tree. Well she went down in this depression and she started scratching and and then he he gobbled at her I didn't know I'm way back at this point he he was not gobbling at me anymore. Yeah I and I did not know I just was calling trying to keep him gobbling that was what I was trying to do keep him interested and also if she was advancing on him I wanted to keep his attention on me not her. Right well also too if somebody's crawling and you don't know where the turkey's at if you can keep him gobbling you can right if he drifts to the right and he gobbles she knows she can go to the right and also I wanted to keep his attention off of what he heard scratching in the leaves of whether she was intentionally doing it I didn't know at the time but when you're crawling you you're gonna make noise. So I was like I'm gonna keep my attention on his attention on me as much as I can. He wasn't gobbling at me anymore. And then I I I was not calling at the time that last time I heard him gobbling I was like I was like if she's crawling she's got to be getting close to him. Yeah at this point I'm like look I've done all I can do and it's silly man but I was sitting there I was like Lord we've been on these turkeys I was like if there's anything I was like this this would be an absolute perfect end just let this happen. I was like you know and then I I kind of got convicted because I was like this would be the perfect the perfect thing that could happen. I was like actually you know I feel bad because I was like no we're already here this is this is phenomenal I was like thank you for just letting us experience this right but of course you know you're selfish and and I was like well just you know if it if at all possible just let her let her be able to get a shot I want this for her anyway she got that last depression she went down she came up and that's when he gobbled at her and she came up and she had this tree in between him and her she got to that tree and she peeked out and she saw him he was at 80 yards and at that point he heard her advancing on him and and he was really interested he was sold he was 100% fooled that she was a hen and uh at that point he she said he was periscoping at the time then he went in a strut and he'd started doing his march he'd wake five or six steps throw his head up five or six more steps right towards her she had a little tree out there and uh she was like all right I think that's 40. So if he gets to that tree I'm gonna kill him and uh sure enough he got to that tree and she kind of had some stuff in the way and he stepped up on that log that was laying and he just periscoped but she could tell he wasn't spooked he just was looking and uh the way it was perfect setup I mean she knows turkey she knows what she needs to do. It's not like you know I I have full confidence in her. Yeah you don't have to tell her to no I don't have to tell her what to do. She knew where she needed to set up there was some thick stuff around so that turkey had to come look so in order to be able to see where he thought what a hen was he had to come to the right a little bit and she made a great call she was like I'm not gonna there's no reason reason to force a shot at 40 through some thick stuff. He's coming he was fooled so he popped back in the strut and started coming he made it about another 15 and man he ran his head up at 25 yards and I just heard that old 20 just crack through that crack through that bottom but my heart sank because I was like pleased I you know how it is in a hardwood bottom sometimes 40 can feel can it sometimes 70 can feel like 40. Right so I and it's happened before so well also too she's been crawling on a turkey you don't know if it's like she's just throwing up and shooting I don't know exactly there's so much that I don't know man I heard boom I just sat there my heart sank and I heard whoo dude I threw my stuff down I took off running and I got up there she was holding that big old summer gun by the neck and dude he was a freak he's a hoss of a turkey just a big body joker you know he's got the three quarter inch spurs I don't care I don't care not not a bit but I'm I'm a hundred percent confident it's not a two year old turkey he's just his body it ended up being 23 pounds and we don't kill turn big turkeys we don't around here we don't kill 23 pound turkeys we're used to the 14 15 pound turkeys he was a 23 pound turkey man and and anyway a lot of that could play into the acronym it could be it could 100% but uh anyway kill that turkey we sat with him for a while took our pictures relived the hunt she had to tell me she got to tell me the story because I wasn't I was a part of the hunt for sure but she killed that turkey I mean I wouldn't have killed that turkey from where I was at she killed that turkey and her being acting like a turkey and doing turkey noises and and and doing everything she did it fooled that turkey and and that's what killed him so she got to tell me the story and it was awesome and and you know while we were sitting there we heard another turkey gobble were you gonna say something yeah I was gonna say y'all thought Dan's stories were done. Yeah no not far from over not getting done uh anyway we were sitting with that turkey we heard one of those other ones fire off and I was like my lord have mercy at this point I done called Johnson I was like hey where you at uh I need you to come down here and bring me some water and come film me kill a turkey because Caitlin's probably finna leave and go home. Uh anyway we had actually made plans to go back at like three o'clock that afternoon and hunt.
SPEAKER_02I was like at this point she's pulled the trigger at 1250 so 830 we struck that turkey at 1250 so four hours and 20 minutes four and a half hours it took us to kill that turkey and uh you know it was awesome man you go through so many emotions which I will say too that's the first thing I told them um you know even though you're hearing Turkey's goblin it took you multiple tries in order to get one in gun range a lot of people it doesn't matter if turkey's goblin or not after you get whooped like that they'll load up and go to the house persistence killed that turkey man yeah 100% persistence killed a turkey I'd like to think that you know there's a lot of people that wouldn't kill that turkey that day just because whether they wouldn't have wouldn't have and and you can take you can say uh that's a dummy never advance on a turkey in a hardwood bottom whatever we wouldn't have killed the turkey had we not done everything that we did.
SPEAKER_00Right. So whatever I understand I've you know you only learn these things just from experience and hunting and failing and killing turkeys and and learn it.
SPEAKER_02Well so two I mean I guess it it depends on the turkey like the one I I killed the other day I mean I think I could have called it turkey slam across the clear cut I mean he was just he was in the right mood but for those turkeys in that case um I mean it was similar woods that we were hunting but um I mean they've got it figured out they can stand right down there in that hardwood bottom they can see everything they want to see and they know if they want to gobble some hens up just stand right there and gobble.
SPEAKER_00And they do and and I've watched it time and time and time again I have had turkeys hens come from behind me and be full on sprinting to that turkey okay well I can't do that. No so who do you think's gonna be the hen that gets to him her I mean so there's something yeah that that I've literally seen it time and time again hens sprint to the turkey. That's what he's doing man. They do this all day they breed a hen they gobble they gobble gobble up another hen cheep they breed her they court her she's gone he gobbles up another hen that's the name of the game yeah you're they're gobbling to get hens that's why they gobble anyway on to the next right so we were sitting there heard that turkey gobble and I was like well I think they're moving off I I feel like they're going in the pines we had to walk through the pines to get back to the truck. So and that's it's just a lot of there's a lot of lessons in within this hunt you can take or leave whatever you want that's what we do here we tell stories you can pick up what you want to pick up and leave what you want to leave. Right so no tips and tricks that's right but all I'm gonna say is the hunt's not over till you're in the truck. Yeah and and and know that don't you know you're in the woods you're around turkeys you're hunting okay so so be quiet don't just you know of course we were talking well you know she was right beside me we weren't hollering we we knew we were still there's very well could still be in the game on a turkey anyway so we were we got back to the pines and we were starting our uh whatever we were starting our up our walk up this little hill to get to the green field we had to walk through to get out. We got to the base of that hill and uh I told Caitlin I was like I I think I hear drumming and she was like no I was like no I'm pretty sure I hear drumming anyway I had this turkey on my back and and we just were easing up this hill and sure enough man there's four of them the four we were on earlier they were strutting right there in the green field and I was like oh my lord I was like what are we about to do? Well I grabbed that old single shot 20 and I put a four I mean four ten I put that four ten in there and I snapped it closed and and uh I said look you just stay right here I'm on I'm gonna see if what I can do at this point they had gone around a bend in the field and I went up and I got uh and it's super thick it's a bunch of briars there's no way they could have seen me out it was perfect it was just the Lord put that turkey right there for me to kill 100%. Yeah it's just right place right time one of those deals and and he went they went around the curve and I got up there and I yelped a little bit heard them drum and I was like man this is perfect. Well I got there and they just poked right back out from around the curve and I could see him and I don't know how far he was 40 45 not sure but it was now or never and I pulled the trigger on that 410 and that surf fell over man I was like you were thankful your fantasy punishment was over. Yes that was another thing I was like if I kill this jugger with my four this 410 and I don't have to carry it no more I can carry my brand new shotgun that I've been dying to carry all year. Anyway man it was just awesome I I got that turkey and that's two Saturdays and two the second Saturday of season and two Saturdays four turkeys dead. Yeah it's just been an unbelievable season but but wait there's more yeah yeah anyway we got this morning we got home we got home at you know three something and uh been hurt been hunting all day and and you know that's just that's what we do in the in the springtime we we turkey hunt so I mean you know whatever that's the only thing that's the only thing on our agenda is turkey hunt don't plan anything on a Saturday that's right I mean because you're not gonna kill a turkey unless you're out there so you got to be out there and they they do turkey stuff all day. Anyway we got home and because we were talk like I said we were talking about going back that afternoon. Well we didn't have to go back that afternoon no more so uh and we didn't get to go back that afternoon and we weren't gonna have to do I did a little afternoon hunting. Right but uh anyway so Caitlin was saying I got a I I played my drum I play the drums at my church and I normally have to be there at about 8 15 8 30 and got a text message they were like all right since it's just one service today we don't we're not gonna have to start practice till nine and I was like well I got a little place right here by my house I got as long as I'm leaving the house by 8 30 I can get to the church by nine and uh I was like I I could at least hear a turkey and maybe get a fly down hunt in even if I hear one it'll be phenomenal. And Caitlin I didn't even say anything about it. Caitlin was just like well why don't you go in the morning I was like you think she was like yeah just go see if you at least will hear one you know and you have till eight o'clock to hunt. I was like yeah you're right I was like I might go and the whole time we were talking about how exhausted we were I mean four and a half hours of sitting there man it's it's mental and physical exhaustion it just is well with no food and water that plays a part in it that's right so and and not even to mention we've been away from our little boy all day and and we of course we want to be with him and spend time with him but I was sitting there and before we went to bed I was like come June I'm really gonna regret sleeping in especially me not getting his hunt to hunt but the weekends I was like I'm really gonna regret not going especially since I can hunt till eight and normally I can't yeah like I'm gonna go well I set my alarm and and I did get to sleep in normally I have to wake up at like 445 to drive to the to the places that I hunt but this is this is literally I rode my side beside so and I also wanted it to be near about gobble time when I was walking to the back of the property. Yeah because I I I had not I don't know where a turkey is I feel like if one would gobble it's gonna be on the back of the property uh kind of where pines turn to a little bit of swamp and I don't have much land there in the swamp I can hunt but if one's roosted on that transition then maybe I could work whatever I just wanted it to be gobble time so if there was one between me and that swamp probably like a mile it was at least a mile walk anyway if one was in between it would have time enough to gobble and I could stop and get on him whatever. Well I got back there and I had not heard heard anything birds were chirping like it was plenty of light it was by far gobble time there was owls going crazy and wasn't hearing anything and uh there's a little corner where the road corners and it's kind of a property line almost a property line where it ends up taking me to the property line and I was just going to walk the property line out. That way I could just cast my call into the property and and just be able to move how I wanted to anyway man I I I I sat down and I said I'm just gonna sit here for a while. I was like I ain't hear no turkeys but it's a gorgeous morning and I'm I'm in the turkey woods you know it's a great morning Sunday morning sun's coming up it's beautiful I was on my phone on Facebook whatever I was just looking and and uh I had done been there and it'd been plenty of time for uh I would say gobble times what 620 630 yeah somewhere well it was almost seven o'clock it was like 645 650 and uh I was like well I'm gonna just tree yelp a little bit maybe I've I've had it before to where you know once you start tree yelping maybe a turkey will gobble and I was like what do I have to lose I don't even know if I'm in within earshot of a turkey. I ain't got nothing to lose let me just call a little bit I yelped a little bit and nothing and I was like man I'm just gonna sit here. I'm in a pretty good spot and I'm in a pretty spot at least and uh man it I heard what I thought was a turkey I thought enough of it to be a turkey that I instantly hopped up and uh just got up off the ground. You know I don't know why you feel like you can hear better when you're standing up but I felt like I could I hopped up I already had my mouth call in so kind of got excited just to get a gobble out I was like well that was it I grabbed my mask and grabbed my gloves that's another one of my superstitions.
SPEAKER_02Yeah he didn't put his mask or gloves on before like he has to hear a turkey gobble in order to put his mask. Unless I know where one's roosted I don't do it. I automatically just put mine on just because like just in the case of emergency if I need to just pull it up I'm already ready.
SPEAKER_00I feel like that's the equivalent of the hunting public they don't carry in the the deer cart when they're going deer hunting because it's just bad luck. Don't kill anything. I don't know whatever I don't put my mask and gloves on until I hear a turkey well I heard him I grabbed my mask and gloves threw them on I walked up the road probably 60 yards from where I was sitting and I checked him again. I was like all right actually he's dead right out there in front of me. I checked my map I was like okay I actually have a little bit more land to play with I had probably had 300 yards to the property line I was like well he's within 300 It's like, so even if I have to advance on him a lot, I got room. But it was uh pines that went into a little swamp bottom. And I wouldn't say super mature hardwoods, but you know, big enough there are turkeys roost in, evidently. Right. But uh it was it was more open than the pines, but I knew I was like, I'm gonna stay in these pines if at all possible. I can advance on him. There's some thick stuff out there. I was like, but I don't want to have to. I if anything, I want to stay about 50 yards inside these pines to make him come looking. It was thick behind me. I say I was about 40 yards from that transition to where it turned to hardwoods because if I knew if he came to that line, I could kill him. Well, I sat there, and as soon as I sat down, I yelped. He sat a little closer. I was like, all right, well, we're good. Um let's just see what happens. And at this point, I struck in the first guy, the first time he gobbled at my call was 658. So by the time I sat down, it was probably seven something. I was like, I can hunt till eight. I can be back at the house in very few minutes. So um I got an hour. I got an hour to kill. So I'm not gonna, I don't, I have some time. I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna be too aggressive with him at all. Also want him to come looking. So anyway, uh I had been sitting there probably, I don't know, evidently it wasn't that long, but it was probably five minutes. It feels like an eternity. I was scratching every now and then. I yelled one more time, I gobbled, and I could hear it in his chest, and I was like, okay, he's for sure advancing on me. Not very fast, but he's definitely advancing. He was probably out there about a buck fifty, a buck seventy-five. And uh I was like, well, we're we're sitting pretty good. And uh about that time I could I saw something black just go through a little, and I was like, oh man, there he was. And I and right after that, I I started hearing drumming. After that last gobble, and I could hear it in his chest, started hearing drumming. And then I was just picking up on the drum and it standed like he was moving a little bit to the right, and it sounded like he was moving a little bit to the left, and then that's when I saw him go through that little little hole I had out there, and uh he went back to the right and I scratched in the in the pine straw, and he I was like, oh boy, I was like, he's convinced there's a hen over here, and he's coming to look. I was like, he's by himself, evidently. Well, um, and I thought he was anyway. So he kept coming, and there was a little lane that I had, it ended up being like it's a deer trail, but it was perfectly. I had a perfect shot to that transition, and I was like, if he comes out there and keeps walking, he's gonna come right in that lane, that's where I'm gonna shoot him. And you know, you think about these things because you you you want to have your gun ready, but he got out there and I got my dot on him, and I was watching him, and I was like, he's probably about 75, and he started going left and started going a little bit left too fast, actually. And so I was like, I I when he got behind a tree, I threw my mouth up and kind of threw my call back to the right. And he didn't gobble, but he went in the strut and and started periscoping and looking. And he came, he started going back to the right a little bit, and he came in that lane at 40 yards, and he just stopped like he knew that's where I was supposed to shoot him, ran his head up, and I squeezed the trigger and there he went.
SPEAKER_02That was it.
SPEAKER_00That was it. Hey, man, and it was awesome. That was that was man, it was it was an awesome hunt. It I pulled the trigger on him at 715, so it was a 17-minute long interaction, but it was amazing.
SPEAKER_02One uh one key thing that I've kind of picked up on uh all the the stories that we've told, and even one part that I left out um when me and Seth got on those jakes. When they were coming in, they were going to the left. They were out there about 80 yards going to the left. And uh while I was sitting there videoing, um like I say, they were I had a tree in between me and them. Seth was like, see if you can scratch in the leaves a little bit. So I started scratching the leaves, and he was like, Yeah, yeah, that worked. That worked, they're coming right at us. And uh walked up there to 28 yards. Yeah. So if there is a if this would be a tip, um if we're we're gonna throw out a tip, Caitlin was scratching in the leaves. It immediately made that turkey break, start working. You scratched in the leaves, made the turkey gobble and come to you.
SPEAKER_00At that point, I could see him at that point whenever I scratched and he gobbled, and he instantly he had been drumming nonstop. He came out of strut and started walking fast. Right. It was like, okay, there she is.
SPEAKER_02Just adding a little bit more realism to that. That's it.
SPEAKER_00Turkeys don't just yelp. Hens don't just yelp, they're always pecking around, scratching. They're they're doing stuff, you know, so then they're making turkey noises. So just trying to be a hen, trying to add that extra step of realism, I think that's what separates a lot of people, but that's that's what did it to him and kind of a bittersweet feeling.
SPEAKER_02Also to uh, you know, on your setup side of things. Um I wouldn't, you know, if you're in a wide open hardwood bottom, set up out in the middle of the wide open hardwood bottom. You want to set up with some cover either around you or behind you. Um I mean, and if as far as setups, try not to set up in the sun. Right. Um try to set up in the shape.
SPEAKER_00It almost becomes second nature after you've been doing it a while. Yeah, you're not gonna get that wide open tree with nothing around you. You you you look at it and you're like, ooh, mm-mm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But you see that one over there with a bunch of junk and maybe a bunch of junk behind it to kind of a hen could be back behind there that a turkey couldn't see, and you're like, oh yeah, that's the one.
SPEAKER_02And I'm I'm over here giving tips on setups, and I was talking about how horrible mine was the other day, but uh it it ended up working.
SPEAKER_00It worked, but whatever. But uh man, I I've never it was kind of a bittersweet moment. That was you know, that was my number three and it's the eighth day season. And I I've never like I said on here before, last year's the first year I've ever got my limit. Yeah, and this year I've got it, it's March 22nd, yeah. And I don't even know what to do with myself. Everybody asked me today, they're like, what are you gonna do? What are you gonna do? I was like, Well, I'm not gonna stop turkey hunting. Right. Like, I'm not gonna hunt somebody to find somebody to hunt, I've got people Caitlin, but and I got my nephew that's never killed one. Yeah, Ethan, of course, I can go, that's my brother, I can go with him, and my dad wants to go, my little brother's been wanting to go, so I can go, and I'm going to go. I can promise you, I'm not gonna go the rest of the season and not go into the woods. No, I'm not gonna be able to go kill a turkey, but you know, you're in on a hunt like with Caitlin the other day. Man, that was awesome. Well, I was I couldn't have been more excited had I pulled the trigger on that turkey. I experienced every bit of those emotions as well. Yeah, well, I that's what I was about to say. I I I find it just as fun watching somebody else get it. Especially if you got good buddies like we do, and you know, and of course you got one more, so we're gonna try to go some this week.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I wanna I'm gonna try to get my my third one on public, hopefully. I say that. Um if you catch me, you catch me uh having some dry spells, I might resort back to private where I know some are, but uh I'm gonna try some public out, try to get my third one.
SPEAKER_00And and you know, it it's just I mean, what do you do, man? Are you gonna not shoot those turkeys because they come in and gobble and strut and act right?
SPEAKER_02Well, that was uh that was the case for me last year. Uh I was kind of in the same scenario as you. Mine happened a little bit later, but it was one of those things. I said the same thing last year. I was gonna try to get my third one on public. It ended up being a sorry morning. I was like, man, I ain't gonna go to public and waste a day out. Let me go over here where I know some turkeys are. Ended up, one came right up there to me. And I mean, it's one of those things. I mean, I'm not, I can't not. I mean, that's what that's not what I'm there for. It is what I'm there for to kill the turkey, but that's not, I mean, I'm there for the only you know, that's there for the experience. Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, but I said that today when that turkey was gobbling out there, I was like, I'm not shooting him. If if I'm just sit here and after 45 minutes he shows up, I'm not shooting him. Yeah. And you can call me whatever you want to call it.
SPEAKER_02A lot of people might think that's funny, but you know, I'm not, I just don't want to do that.
SPEAKER_00That's my last turkey I'm gonna be able to kill for 2000 in Mississippi for 2026. I'm not just gonna quote deer hunt him.
SPEAKER_02Well, we're we're not doing it, doing it for a numbers thing or a pictures thing.
SPEAKER_00Um he did everything I could have asked, and my heart was thumping.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00He did he checked all the boxes, and that was it's probably one of the more memorable hunts. It's hard to say that because this year has just been phenomenal. Yeah. But you know, uh is what it is. I guess I'll just go. So it's just the start. I don't know. It uh it's all right. Caitlin still has one.
SPEAKER_02Well, Seth still got some smashing tag along with him. So I plan I plan to go with him some this week.
SPEAKER_00So um I would say, and I and I don't know how it is for everybody else. I can only speak on the people I talk to and my experiences, but turkeys are doing it this year. Yeah. Seth would say otherwise. Yeah. But down here, especially for in your case, in my case, I can't. I think in a morning that I've been and hadn't heard one. And man, I never have turkeys respond to calls like they have in the first week of season like they have this year.
SPEAKER_02In Seth's case, apparently they gobble pretty good on the limb, but as soon as they hit the ground, and I shut up.
SPEAKER_00I talked to a buddy in Corinth in North Mississippi, and he says the same thing. He's like, you know, we'll get we'll get your typical turkey or early season turkeys. They'll gobble 10 or 11 times in a tree, they'll fly down and we'll not say a single word. I was like, man, this could not be further from the truth. Yeah. From where what I'm hoping.
SPEAKER_02I will say turkeys are still flocked up, like oh, they're still flocked up. But me, on the other hand, I mean, I found satellite turkeys, I guess, is what they are that got kicked to the side and uh worked out for them. They just uh they're they're ready. Um both of them have been been ready, but I don't know. Um, you know, for I guess for those of you that are having trouble, surely, surely they ought to break up sooner than later.
SPEAKER_00And the the only thing is is what you you just gotta keep going. Yeah, you just gotta keep pumping. You're not gonna kill them. I've had years where I've only killed one turkey. I've had years where I haven't killed any. So I mean, you know, everybody I don't know. I I I don't feel worthy to to have had the the season that I've had. Yeah. But, you know, like Caitlin said, like I've said, we've all said on here, you pay for every single turkey that you kill, whether it's the day prior, whether it's the week prior, whether it's the pre season scouting, you're paying for every turkey. If you're out there hunting and you're putting in the work, you're paying for every turkey. Right. This place that I've killed, I killed two of the turkeys on, man. I put in, I don't know how many hours of work.
SPEAKER_02Well, um, also, too, um had some really good hatches. Yeah, really.
SPEAKER_00Reaping the benefits of the really good hatches, reaping benefits of good hatches. You gotta stay with turkeys, hang in there, keep hunting them, be persistent. You gotta be more hard-headed than that turkey. Yeah, you know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02Uh uh one thing that'll help you stay in there with them um is uh bring some water, unlike Daniel. Might want to pack you a snack.
SPEAKER_00I've done I and I was telling Caitlin uh, I guess this morning, uh no, I don't know when it was. It'll just this whole weekend's been a blur. It's just been awesome. It's been an adrenaline rush the whole time. A lot of turkey hunting. Yeah, but uh I I really like not toting a vest.
SPEAKER_02Well, I was gonna say you need to take that one with you when you go.
SPEAKER_00But I like just I like the leafy, my bino's and and my Yelpers. I understand. Yeah, but I got hey, if I could figure out the water situation, then I know. I know what you're about to say. What me and Caitlin's already looked online at the spring legion vest. No, I was thinking I was talking about the more superior, like the bino. Yeah, yeah. Dude, if I because I could, if I could have, it still doesn't really solve the water situation. But uh, you know, I I because all I really want to tote, I do like toting I was toting a box call all weekend because I guess I had to, but I like having a a bo a slate or a glass, some type of a pot call for locating and just to really cut through the wind. So I would like to have I always am going to tote a pot, of course my striker and and my sandpaper, whatever, but well what I was what I was gonna say is uh shout out Spring Legion.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Um I I said I I didn't know. I like the vest, um, but I didn't know I hadn't worn it. Um I actually really like the vest, really glad I got it. Um, it's very minimalistic. Um not heavy at all, and I mean I carry everything I use in it. Right. Um, so that is an option, I guess. Uh if you if you like night toting a vest. I guess so. I don't know.
SPEAKER_00I don't know what I'm gonna do the rest of the year as far as that goes. I gotta do something water because I cannot go. Yeah, the it was from it was from daylight till three o'clock. I didn't have a drop of water and I was about to die.
SPEAKER_02Well, I got the water bladder in mine.
SPEAKER_00So I normally towed a water bladder in my in my vest, but I just wasn't running one because I could only use the box call, so I was like, why am I gonna tow the vest?
SPEAKER_02Well, you can you can take that one and uh slot and everything for it. But we've been rambling for an hour and 17 minutes. Jeez. Yeah, a lot of stories. A lot of stories. Might should have saved some of them because if we have a dry week this next week, maybe Seth will be on fire. Maybe Seth's gonna Seth's gonna catch fire. Maybe uh maybe he'll have a bunch of stories.
SPEAKER_00But well, we you know, I I've hopefully I'm having another little uh mid-April weekend out of state trip coming up that just kind of fell in our laps today. So maybe that'll come. And yeah, it's nothing really gonna happen for me as far as killing wise until April, because uh not really anything around, you know, Bama opens up the 25th, which is what middle of the week this week. Yeah, but I don't think non-residents can hunt the first few days, huh? Or maybe they can. I don't think so.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I'll look. I'm going somewhere this weekend, it's not a it's not out of state, it's still in state, but it's somewhere I've never been before. So um we'll we'll be hunting up there this weekend. Um, so that'll be kind of fun, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Seth Seth will be after him. Yeah, he's gonna get one on their belt sooner.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, which he's he's not even gonna be on the gun for the next three days. So that uh he's gonna call up three. I don't know how I'd feel about that. But anyways, uh I have looked.
