Dalelands - Episode 7 'The Nathlum'

The party retrieves the Nathlum with equine agility and makes their way back to Shadowdale Town to warn Myrna that Powell may not be far behind. Now established adventurers, our party must decide their next moves. With a week to themselves our heroes further their skills and gain new power as long kept secrets are revealed.

Thank you all for joining us for episode seven of the Dale Lands Campaign. Last episode, we began in the forest as they finally discovered the lost library of Lithchantos, guarded by a couple of goblins. One of our companions who will not be named got poked in the eye by uh goblins. Uh learned that one from Instagram.

No, I stopped it. Remember? I grabbed it and I stabbed it back.

Never mind, never mind, never mind. You outsmarted those goblins. Um then tried going in an alternate way, uh, which ended up being a brown bear's cave. Worked a little bit of magic trying to distract it, uh didn't seem to work super well. Ike went in to try and calm it down. It was uh kind of it kind of cooled off a bit, but it's still guarding its space, not really letting you through. Um so you decided just to go that original way, uh, bust down the door and kill the goblins inside. So uh while the group was doing that, it was a kind of a clusterfuck uh in that front room. It's kind of very tight, uh, so there was a lot of um inability to attack uh some of the enemies. Uh so Ike cleared some space and ran straight through the hallway seeing what was up ahead, um, allowing his companions to uh take care of business in the first room. Um he found in the next room empty barracks and a portcullis uh that you were able to open eventually after killing the goblins in the first room, were able to open that eventually with the unseen servant um through a uh a winch. That lifted the portcullis. Uh you had uh someone open a door revealing the uh the big library on the inside, the rotunda um which had a lower level below it. Uh this was the upper level, but was also guarded by more goblins. So a hefty fight uh began. A lot of hit points were lost by some, um, but you came out on the upper hand, and we finished as everyone took a short rest, looked over some of the books in the library. Uh Hodge got a new spell book, kind of like a backup.

And we rejoin our party uh in the rotunda on the upper level after their short rest. So they have a couple of hit points back. Uh I would assume most of you are at least close to full, being that you're level two right now. Um, and there are plenty of other ways to go from here. You can go downstairs, there are plenty of uh different ways downstairs to go. There's also one more hallway uh that goes up north from the upper level that you have not explored. So uh what would you like to do? I'll I'll show you both of the maps here, just so that you can kind of make up your mind. Um so this is the upper floor. You can see there's one way to go uh north, and then this is the lower floor. There are plenty of rooms to explore down there as well. Uh there are three doors, uh north, east, and south from the lower level. Um, and then like I said, uh one hallway in the upper level.

Um, and then Hodge would have looked through his uh his book that he was looking for, uh, his a very specific one. He can share that with you all if he wants to.

Orion being the first in the Marching Order is going to peek in, I would assume, and see a silver circle inscribed on the floor and decorated with magical runes fills this chamber. What voices can be heard through a door on the west wall. A thick, heavy curtain hangs in the room's northeast corner.

Um if you did want to dedicate uh I think with your sense and and magical power now that you have, uh I would say you could certainly get it back uh on its legs in this week and to kind of either to continue coming back to it as your own farm if you would like to take that over, or getting it into a good enough place to hand it off to somebody else to run it.

Um he has had many of the nights he has had terrible dreams that have been just consuming him. Uh he hears the voice of Leaf in his mind, he sees visions of the rot that Moander has caused, the sounds of hundreds of beasts growling and roaring in his ears, the claws of the fair that he once fought. After he escapes, his clan feels it deep within his chest as if it was the first time he was feeling it. He feels the whip and the lashes from his old captors lashing at his back, as it was also happening for the first time. He is hearing this almost all at the same time, and leaving him restless, waking up periodically in the middle of the night from his dreams, exhausted during the day, but still working as hard as he can. Uh he hears on the good dream nights, sometimes there are good dream nights. There are, it's reminiscent of him and Leif sitting on their porch on their farm, smoking a pipe after a long day's work. Uh it'll shift to him and Yorna at on the roof of the old barn that he used to sleep in, just giggling together and talking about their days. Um but most of the nights have been these terrible dreams of angry beasts and the faces of his old captors. Um just yeah, all at the same time, all of these noises. And then one night during a nightmare, abrupt silence. The dream shifts. And he is back on a porch in his rocking chair, with Leaf next to him. Everything else goes silent. We're gonna put on the William show for a little. Uh, and he says to Ike, What do you want, Ike Lagris? And he says back the strength to defeat Bulgren and the power to defeat and destroy and disband that entire clan that caused me so much pain, grief, and torment.

I think I'll stay in Shadowdale Town. I've got no reason really to go elsewhere, and I am engrossed in my books. Um I've got the new spells from the Nathlum. I've got the new spell book that I got from the library as well. And I've got that book. Um Experiments with Constructs and Simulacra. Uh there's all sorts of stuff in the book about golems and homunculus and uh any manner of sort of constructs, but the one section that is especially interesting me at the moment that I'm skipping to is about the simulacrum. Um I'm reading through it, and it's a lot of the same as I had kind of glanced at before during our short rest in Left Chuntos. Uh you know, a simulacrum is an illusion spell. It creates a likeness of any creature you have the time to study. It's a 12-hour casting time, um, and a lot of wizards uh cast it on themselves so that they can have a double. Uh double the power. Uh, but this wizard in particular, whoever wrote this book, uh, did a lot of atypical things. He gave this simulacrum open-ended commands. He asked it to interpret things. He attempted to essentially, it seems like as Hodges pouring over this night after night, uh, give it some semblance of a will. Uh it gets towards the end of the section on simulacrums and Hodges reading it, uh, that the wizard starts to remark, I've spent so much time with this creation of mine, and his behavior has become so natural, I rarely command him at all. It feels almost like a brother to me. This illusion is beginning to make me question what is real. I have no doubt he could exist in greater society without arousing any suspicion. Does this creation have free will? Do I? His existence is making me question my own. If free will does not exist, but the illusion of it does, and it is so convincing that it cannot be discerned, what is the difference? I have set him free. I have sent him out into the world. I could not bear to hold him here any longer. I have not seen him since, nor have I created a simulacrum since, as it would destroy him. I would not have the heart. Um and that is how that ends. Hodge immediately flashes back to when he was growing up with his father, and his dad was very, very good with illusions. The minor illusion cantrip specifically, he cast all the time. Hodge learned it from him, and his dad would constantly trick him. Every time he thinks he knows for sure something's real, there's no way this is an illusion, a gold coin on the ground, something like that. Uh, it would always end up being that. And his dad would laugh and they'd have a great time. Um. And as a kid, Hodge would always, you know, how I swear it was real. And his dad, thinking back to this passage, would he would always say, if it feels real, it is real. And he thinks about when he was in that storm with his father. And that tree branch snapped and fell and crushed him. And his father melted into that pile of snow, indicating that he was a simulacrum. Oh what my god.

I got this letter, and it says it says, my dearest daughter, it has been nearly 20 years since we have last seen each other, and I hope that you are doing well. And I would like to first of all apologize for not being with you for these last 20 years, but I couldn't. Um I sent you away with my sister in hopes that her husband and her family could train you a little bit and that you would know what love is and know how to and be safe. I'm sending you this letter now because I fear you are no longer safe. You are the target of the black hand of Bane. When I was younger, I was in their group. And somehow when I was when I became pregnant with you, they wanted to dedicate you to Bane. At first, I had agreed because I didn't know what it entailed. About five years, when you were around five years old, you were taken from me, and they said it was just for a ritual. I learned that this ritual was to kill you. And so I stole you away and sent you with your aunt. And fear it's no longer safe there. So you must run away and meet so-and-so in the De Lands. They will be able to give you more information, what I cannot write in this letter. And I love your heart emoji. Thank you. Okay, this is the scene that I'm writing, so everybody be nice to me. Okay. So Orion having a night to himself for once in a very long time. He's going to go down to the lake. That's nearby. And he's going to make sure nobody is around. He is completely alone. And he is going to get in the water and he's going to take a bath for the first time in a really long time. And as he's doing so, he's waist deep in the water and he's refusing to look at his reflection this entire time. And as this is happening, he notices that all of the stars in the sky start getting a little bit brighter and a little bit brighter until all of a sudden they get really, really dim. And the water, he looks in the reflection of the water and he sees the stars beginning to drift. Almost like the stars are a type of water themselves. So it's not really a reflection. It's different. It's like these waves of stars start coming towards him. That's really strange, and he starts panicking, his heart starts racing, and then he realizes he can't move at all. He's frozen. And the stars keep coming closer and closer to him until eventually they start um poking at his skin. And at first it just feels a little bit hot. Um, and then the the star waves start thrashing his body in the water. He's getting dunked under the water. He try he can't fight, he can't move. Um, and the stars are starting to penetrate his skin. Um and it's getting so painful, it hurts him so much. Is like white, hot, radiant light just brand in his skin, going penetrating through the muscle and the bones, just down to the marrow. Um and he tried and as this is happening, he thinks he's gonna die. Uh, death is so close at hand that he can't breathe, and he's just burning stuff. There's no way he can tolerate this pain. And in his what he thinks are his final breaths, he screams in his mind just to Luna. You have to save me. You have to save me. Like, I've dedicated my entire life to you. Why are you doing this to me? And then all of a sudden, um, all of the starlight waves stop and he resurfaces and he looks at the sky. And the stars are, again, very, very dim. But the two stars that we saw earlier in the campaign, um, which we didn't record, I don't believe, but there were these odd stars in the sky.

Um they start to merge in the sky. And he, as the water around him settles, he looks to his reflection, and starting to stipple his skin are these little beads of starlight and constellations, much like have been on his face for a very long time. And he is so angry. This is his greatest trauma, his greatest fear is he has been hiding this for so long. Um he has been forced to hide this for so long, and um he just starts smacking the water and thrashing and screaming and just all of this anger just just comes out for the first time. He expresses it in a very long time. And he kind of gathers himself for a moment, takes a deep breath, goes and gets his clothes, and thinks to himself, I have to go see Joanna.

As you as you step out of the water, getting the full picture of yourself and the reflection, looking back up to the stars, seeing that those two had connected, feeling the pain on your body turn into strength as the stars themselves cease with their subtle moves, their subtle messages to you as you prayed to the moon, to the Luna. No response. The stars have been giving you these subtle messages. This message is a strong one, and you feel it. As the stars claim you whole, you level up to three. And last but not least, as we transition to Joanna.

After having gotten back from the library and not having received a letter yet, um, Joanna doesn't want to go too far. So she'll train for a bit with Val and O'Rion. But then she will travel around Shadowdale Town and whichever um other little towns or areas are within walking distance that she would be easily able to be found when a letter does come. And she is stopping into any hospitals, like sick dens, anything where there is a clear population of people in need. Um waiting for this letter back from Elliot. Um, and as she is helping people, umilar to when Humble Hill was healed, every person she helps, she has dreams that night in her trance, visions, I guess, um, of Elliot, of their time back in Port Last, and of her sister. Um with her sister, it's as close to a nightmare as you can get for an elven trance. Um, it's just seeing her sister wither away again and again and again, and being helpless against it. Um but when she has decent trances, she thinks of Elliot, who, other than her sister, was the only other person who believed in her when she couldn't. And he kind of was always there to push her along and encourage her to hone her skills. Um, and when he was going to leave port last, he told her um it's I've kind it's kind of been insinuated they were involved with each other for a bit, but they have since parted. Um and when they when he was leaving town, he said, no matter where we end up, I will always call for you. He was she was the only person that he trusted to help him. Um so in going around to all of these people in need, Joanna has decided to kind of lean into Hodge's theory of being the perfect conduit of her god. She's going to get the hands-on experience of shepherding people close to death into it safely while also learning how to heal more efficiently, things that aren't necessarily fatal. Um she talks to her locket to her sister a lot, um, to the point where she kind of on the winds almost hears her sister's voice in response. Um just as she did in life guiding her along. And the closer she gets to the end of the week, um that dichotomy of the suffering and the healing comes in again with nightmares now also transitioning into the wartimes of Port Last. Port Last for years was wrapped by invasions, battles, war. So she has seen the aftermath of death, um, but was never involved directly in it until leaving and meeting everyone. And she decides that of the two sides of her god, she has seen and dealt with enough suffering. She watched her sister suffer and didn't couldn't do anything about it. She wants to lean into the healing side. And she wants to be the shepherd and the conduit of a god that she's not necessarily sure she still believes in. She tries to talk to him still. Um in kind of like a I hope you don't mind that I'm only gonna really be focusing on one half of your of your thing here. Um but she wants to learn how to prolong the lives of those closest to her so that she doesn't selfishly have to live through the loss of her sister again through any of you.
