Did high school English class actually teach us how to be decent human beings, or were we all just skimming SparkNotes to pass a quiz?
This week, we're dusting off the classic syllabus and looking at standard high school reads through a totally different lens: Basic Human Decency. From Odysseus's ruinous, ego-filled trash talk to weaponizing hypocrisy frozen at the bottom of Dante's Inferno.
Put on the headphones and join us as we break down books that were low-key trying to save us from becoming insufferable adults - Let's Chat and Yap about It!

SPEAKER_00Hello, bitches. Welcome to Committed Technically.
SPEAKER_03For today, Ashley is going to bully the fuck out of me.
SPEAKER_00To be fair, I don't think you're gonna be the only one that gets a little offended by the things I have to say today.
SPEAKER_03But I was the inspiration.
SPEAKER_00You you were. You were the inspiration. But you know what? It's gonna be fine. We're all gonna learn something today. Uh, anyways, let's chat and yap about it, shall we?
SPEAKER_03Sure. Liggle.
SPEAKER_00According to the National Center of Education Statistics, roughly 54% of U.S. adults read below a sixth grade reading level. Along with that, only 30 to 33% of fourth to eighth graders perform at or above a proficient level of reading. And if anyone can remember what proficient was when you were testing in school, proficient is the base level. Base level reading. And you know what? I fucking believe it. Not because I'm around data research or I'm with students every single day, but because of how less people know about literature. So here at Committed Technically, we're talking about books you should have read in high school. High school to not make you an illiterate, dumb fuck asshole adult. Welcome to the chat.
SPEAKER_03So dumb fuck asshole. That's fun.
SPEAKER_00Not calling Brandon a dumb fuck asshole, but he has some dumb fuck tendencies sometimes. One of which Are you trying to clock me right now? I'm sorry. You did say I was gonna bully you today. Just a little bit. Um this all stemmed from me trying to express how excited I was to go see the Odyssey in theaters, right? Brandon was like, I have no idea what you're talking about. Not a zip zero. And I said, What do you mean? Homer's Odyssey? Brandon goes, I don't know what two plus two, what? Like, what is that? It it it triggered me. He did not mean to rage bait me, but he rage baited me when he said that. So this is where it comes from today. There are so many people who have either one seen the movie and totally missed the plot. Or there's people who don't know what it is or like where it comes from. So today I'm going to list, I think I did like seven, seven books. Seven books you should have read in high school to make you seem more worldly than you probably actually are. We're just gonna kind of jump right into it.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Just to kind of let people know, too, these are um movie adaptions too. So like these are originally books that they made into movies. So if you want to go see the movie, the movie is never as accurate as the book. I think that's pretty like straightforward with a lot of things. Um, but just to put that out there. If you want to go watch a movie, you should also probably watch some of these movies as well. Um, the first one is God, I can't remember when I read this one. I think it was my sophomore year of high school. I don't know when you would have read this book because we went to the same high school.
SPEAKER_03I'd say freshman andor sophomore, I don't remember. Yeah. Um Can I just do that side note? Yeah, go for it. Um tequila mockingbird, I always thought it meant tequila mockingbird.
SPEAKER_00And this is why we need to read, ladies and gentlemen.
SPEAKER_03But it also reminds me of uh have you seen uh Bad Teacher with Cameron Diaz?
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_03And they she has to get these kids to understand about this to kill a mockingbird. That's what it reminds me of. That's a good movie, anyways.
SPEAKER_00What bad teacher? Yeah, yeah, bad teacher's funny. Uh yeah, first one is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Why do I think you need to read this book if you haven't already? Um, because it teaches people how to use perspective and to be not judgmental. And kind of a human I'm not and the thing is, guys, I'm not gonna break down the books for you. This is not what was that? Cliff Notes? This ain't that they this ain't motherfucking cliff notes.
SPEAKER_02A book report?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we ain't doing that today.
SPEAKER_02I thought that's what you were gonna do.
SPEAKER_00Oh, hell no. Oh, hell no. You wanna know why? Because what's the point? Because then they're just gonna listen to the Committed Technically podcast and be like, this bitch is telling me to go read these books, but she just read the book for me. No, absolutely not.
SPEAKER_03That's what I thought you were gonna do. I mean, you got it right here though.
SPEAKER_00Kinda, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Cute little wrap-up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So that's why I think you should read this book. And the human lesson you need to take away from it. I'm gonna use a quote from part of the book. It says, You will never understand a person until you consider the things from his point of view, or until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. That's from Atticus Finch, a character in To Kill a Mocking Bird. Basically focusing in that you need to realize that everyone is dealing with some hidden fucking shit and has hidden contexts within themselves, and you know nothing about their life. Please, how to teach empathy. I feel like a lot of adults today lack empathy. And I feel like as children, you're born with empathy. I feel like you're taught to be sad for people. If like your favorite character dies in a movie, you're sad. Right. If your favorite character is happy, you're happy. You're you're you're taught these things. And then as you grow up, the world strips you of your empathy.
SPEAKER_03I didn't like that quote.
SPEAKER_00Why not? Because of the crawling in the skin?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Are we skinwalkers now?
SPEAKER_00We could be.
SPEAKER_03I think my dog is.
SPEAKER_00Huh?
SPEAKER_03My dog's a skinwalker.
SPEAKER_00Your dog is a skinwalker?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he can walk on his hind legs.
SPEAKER_00You know what? That would actually really check out. That would make so much sense.
SPEAKER_03Anywho.
SPEAKER_00Anywho.
SPEAKER_03By the way, I'm just gonna throw in my little commentary here and there. Yeah, go for it.
SPEAKER_00Because I really didn't put you too much in this one. I said, you know what? I'm just gonna talk. I'm gonna rant. So you just hop in whenever you want.
SPEAKER_03I'm just gonna say some really random ass shit, so. Go for it. Yeah. Anyways, continue.
SPEAKER_00Oh, okay. So, first book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Please, if you haven't read it, read it. Teach yourself some empathy, reteach it to yourself, and realize that you're not the only fucking human being on this earth going through sh through some shit, okay? Next one is Lord of the Flies by William Golding. Why? Why do I think you need to read this? You'll never be immune to mob mentality or cruelty, aka peer pressure. No matter what you go through, no matter what you're dealing with, people will always try to stir you away from from the main plot, from your main character status. Um, human lesson in this. So when you're reading the book, I think it is a very slow read. It was a really hard book for me to read. I actually read this in my senior year of high school. Um, in Mrs. Ogborn's class. I don't know what you got Mrs.
SPEAKER_03Ogborn?
SPEAKER_00I did.
SPEAKER_03Must be nice.
SPEAKER_00When did you read this book in high school?
SPEAKER_03I also want to say senior year. It was with that. I think it was Welter. I can't remember that guy. Welter. Was that his last name? Tall skinny guy, kind of awkward. Um, I'm pretty sure it was Welter.
SPEAKER_00Tall skinny guy that was kind of awkward and weird is Stalker that I remember. I had him my sophomore year.
unknownOh, yeah.
SPEAKER_03There were a lot of weird teachers there.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm. Yeah. Anywho. Anywho, um The Human Lesson. I do think this is a very slow read. So if you are gonna take my advice and read these books, if you haven't already, just know it is kind of hard to like hook into. Um, this was actually made into a mini-series adaptation recently on Netflix. So you can just look up Lord of the Frog Lord of the Flies, excuse me. Lord of the Frogs. Yeah. And you can watch it. Again, not as good as the book, but I digress. Um, but once it picks up, the reality is that under social pressures, fear, and just petty tribulation, almost everyone succumbs to the basic mob behavior. Um, I can promise you that nine out of 10 of you will say that you would have been Ralph, and I think you're full of shit. Um, because when everyone is put in that situation, you really, really, really have to be true to yourself and know that you don't that in a group of like 20 people, if you're able to stand up to 19 of those people, can you actually do it? If you can, you're Ralph. But if not, then you're no different than anyone else.
SPEAKER_03I'm not Ralph.
SPEAKER_00You're like, I'm gonna fully admit to it.
SPEAKER_03Girl, I can't even confront one person.
SPEAKER_00Moral lesson to the story, and why I think human adults to not be an asshole need to read this is because it's gonna teach you a reality check and moral arrogance, and you need to have a moral fucking compass to tell you what's right from wrong because people will tell you what they believe is right from wrong, but is it accurate to them and their plot or to you and yours? You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, damn, yeah, girl, hard hedges in here. Shit.
SPEAKER_00Told you. I went, I went ham. I went hard. Next one, next one we actually read together. You just have no recollection of it. We talked about this previous before we started recording. Um, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. We read this our junior year of high school in Mr. Thompson's class. We sat in the back of the class, and your response when I told you this was, yeah, I watched the movie.
SPEAKER_03I don't I don't remember reading the book, but I do I did watch the movie, and the movie was good with uh Leonardo DiCaprio.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03DiCaprio.
SPEAKER_00DiCaprio. So in the last week's episode, you said that you think money would be able to fix all your problems. It would. Okay, so why do I think you guys need to read the book? To me, this book kind of expresses an external validation will not fix your internal empty spaces. You need to fucking seek therapy.
unknownTrue.
SPEAKER_00And he said true.
SPEAKER_01Me included.
SPEAKER_00Um human lesson in here. Gatsby spends a lot of his life building like this hollow, obstinuous persona to win back a past that just doesn't exist anymore. He spends all this money, he has all the flashy things, he does all the things to to to make people like him, and then all he's trying to do is fill this empty void inside of him. That it will just not it's not fillable by the things that he wants to have it filled with. You know what I mean? That's true. Um, beyond that, uh, the Bruce Hannons are the worst type of fucking people, uh, they're ultimate selfish adults. In my opinion, don't be like Tom or Daisy. But money cannot resolve all your problems, is what I kind of run this back down to.
SPEAKER_03I disagree. With my whole pussy.
SPEAKER_00I feel like, okay, so here's my thing. Here's where I sit in my personal life. If if if what I wanted was someone to love me like how Jim loves me, and to have a family like the one I'm growing right now with my daughter, if I wanted that so bad, money could never buy me that.
SPEAKER_03No.
SPEAKER_00And that's where I'm coming at it. Now, because I have Jim and I have and our daughter and in this life that we live, would money solve some of our current issues or current things that we want. Sure, 100%. But without my my my core reasoning for that money, I would not be happy. Can I rephrase? Go ahead.
SPEAKER_03I'm talking like materialistic things, okay? Deaths. Um yeah, materialistic things, literally. Things that you own.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Love and literally everything else. No.
SPEAKER_00So that's what this book is talking about. He's trying to fill all these voids by the things that he'll never be able to fill. Hello. Hello, hello.
SPEAKER_03I'm talking about materialistic things for myself.
SPEAKER_00You said I want a jet ski. Girl.
SPEAKER_03I want a private jet.
SPEAKER_00Hello. So yeah. Um, moving on to another one. I, you know what? I say in high school, I read this one on my own in high school. This was not an art reading curriculum that I could remember. We did go to inner city witch taught public schooling. So I don't the face brands making is so relevant to the type of education that we got with Wichita Public Schooling. Anyways, I read this one on my own, but I'm also kind of a scary bit, just people know. Um, Frankenstein by Mary Shelly talked about this.
SPEAKER_03We did a podcast on this.
SPEAKER_00Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Why I think you need to read the book. It takes accountability for your actions and the mess that you create yourself.
SPEAKER_04Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Okay. A human lesson. Again, like I said, I'm not breaking down these books for you guys. Go read them. We're we're in our late 20s, 30s, maybe into our 40s. We don't know. Um, time to grow up. Pick up a book. Even if you don't want to pick up like a physical book, get the Kindle, babe. Get the audio audiobook, babe. Read something and take away some of that brain rot that you've been pushing for so long. I promise you, you'll feel so much better about yourself. This is one you need to add into that little rotation. Why? Because Victor Frankenstein is self-absorbed and obsessed with his own ambitions. So a lot of people, I think we did talk about this when we talked about the gay monsters. Yeah. Yeah. And how everyone assumes that Frankenstein is the creature. The creature is just the creature.
SPEAKER_03Right, and I didn't know that until you told me that. Yeah. Because I thought Frankenstein was the creature. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. No, uh, Victor Frankenstein is the creator himself that creates the creature. The creature has no name. Um, he's created a life and then immediately abandons it um because it's super inconvenient and it and it's ugly. Okay, it doesn't look attractive to him. So he's like, uh, on to the next big thing. Leaving this immortal life to have to fend for itself in a world that it knows nothing about. Right. Um, it's kind of crazy because he says all this, Victor, and he really just becomes the most ugly and evil person in the whole story. And people try to argue that he's not evil. I think it just depends on your moral compass. Yeah. Um result own your own shit, bitch. There's so many people I know that just like can't take accountability for their own action. Oh T, look, his eyes got real big with that one. He knows. He knows, he knows. Um, so there's so many people that I know, you know, we know mutually, we know separately. Right. They just can't take accountability for their own actions, and it fucking shows. It's just the most obnoxious thing in the whole world. And it's like if you would just pick up a book, or if you just go fucking seek therapy and seek some help, it might just help you out. I also did a forward slash because Victor Frankenstein did create a life, rather, it was through medicine in like weird ways, but he did nonetheless. Um, be a present father. All my male listeners out there, if you have babies, please, for the love of God, your children need you. Do not abandon them because they're inconvenient for the life that you want to live. T. Oh. All the shade.
SPEAKER_03All the shade.
SPEAKER_00All the shade. Okay. Next one. Ooh, next one is like a litmus test. Do you know what a litmus test is? It shows the dumb people from the smart people.
unknownOh.
SPEAKER_00It's like your IQ test. Um, to the people who say that they don't like this book or that they didn't like this movie, um, you just put those people in a corner and you don't associate yourself with those people anymore. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Next one I'm obviously talking about is the Odyssey by Homer. Uh, why do you need to read the book? Why do you need to see the movie? Uh this is actually the telltale of how not to be an asshole. Know that your pride could ruin your life and the others around you. Hardcore. Now, I know you never read this book. To be fair, the Odyssey was not in our reading curriculum. I read The Odyssey because I had to pass theater. Those of you who don't know, I was a four-year lesbian in high school.
SPEAKER_03You were a lesbian.
SPEAKER_00People could assume that because you were married to a Bold Eye lesbian. I was married to a Bold Eye lesbian for nine. No, 60 days. 60 days.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, 60 days. I almost said six months, and I was like, what?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I would have died. Um Okay. So here's the thing. Again, I read this book because I had to for a different class. It was not in our actual reading curriculum. It should have been. It's Greek mythology. So maybe the reason why it's not in reading literature or or reading things to the to this day is because it can challenge people's religious base. Okay. I think you're fucking nuts. Whatever. I think you should still read the book. It's the oldest tale that I think people should know about. Um, Odysseus is the main character. He's brilliant. He's a really great general. He is called by like the big tough guy. Okay. This guy is like big lead Sparta. He said, he says, we're gonna go and attack Troy. Troy is a little shore off the Mediterranean. They have really good trade route. Um, the reason why they want to go is because here's a little Greek mythology backstory. So Zeus, big guy, right? Zeus was having a party and there was an apple, and they said that the apple goes to the fairest of them all. Well, Athena, Aphrodite, and his wife was there. Okay. Um, well, here's all here's another thing about Hades be fucking his wife, but he also be fucking all the other bitches too. So he's not gonna be like, hey, uh, you're the fairest of them all, but like I'm gonna fuck you tonight. You know what I mean? He's like, this ain't nothing to do with me. So he calls onto Paris, which is the prince of Troy. So pick one. Pick one of the bitches. Who's the fairest of them all? He is they're offering him things, like Athena offers like strength. Um Hedda, she offers like guidance. Aphrodite offers the most beautiful woman in the world. Ends up being Helen of Sparta. Helen of Sparta is married to the big guy's younger bro.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. Okay, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um, he says, I want the baddest bitch. Okay. Okay. Because he's like 18. Yeah. Right? You're 18-year-old man, you got all like that just tasterone going. You know what I mean? You've been there.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, great. Yeah, I'm still there.
SPEAKER_00Oh, he's still still there. So he wants the baddest bitch of them all. Steals the wife of Little Bro. Now, if you watch like Troy, the one with like Brad Pitt, they don't do all that. But that's the original story. So when Big Bro finds out he's been wanting a reason to attack Troy. Because again, he loves the trade routes. There's this thing called Zeus's Law. It's like the Ten Commandments before like Christianity took over all that shit. You know what I mean? Yeah. One of which is you have to be welcome into someone's house and then they're gonna treat you right. Okay. Okay. Hospitality. Well, he calls on to Odysseus and a couple of other homies from across the Mediterranean and in Greece, and they said, Hey, you're uncome join us, or there's gonna be hell to pay. Everyone's scared of this guy. I mean, the man fucking sacrificed his own daughter for for fair trade. Right. For fair uh outcomes. He don't play. So Odysseus is like, all right, homie, like I'll go with you. I got some of my best guys, we'll go with. Get get get your brother's bitch back. Okay. You like how I'm making this super modern for you?
SPEAKER_02Thank you.
SPEAKER_03I appreciate it.
SPEAKER_00You're welcome.
SPEAKER_03I'm enjoying it.
SPEAKER_00So this is a 10-year journey. Just there, because they're stuck on a beach. Who wants to fight a war on a beach? It's not doable. So Odysseus has this idea to build a horse out of uh boats that they brought in. You know what I'm talking about? It's called the Trojan horse. Okay.
SPEAKER_03So they end up Is that what this movie is about?
SPEAKER_00No, this movie is about the very end of the war on Troy and his journey back home. Odysseus' journey back home.
unknownInteresting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So if you wanted to, you would watch Troy first with Brad Pitt. And then you would watch The Odyssey. Because it would all tie right together.
SPEAKER_01Interesting.
SPEAKER_00Yep. Um, so he said, we're gonna do this. We're gonna pack in this fucking horse. Well, half of us. Other half are gonna go hide somewhere. We're gonna say it's an offering to Athena. Athena was one of their goddesses that they worshipped in Troy. We're offering to Athena, offering to Athena. Okay, cool. They bring this Trojan horse in, and then at night, in front of Athena's temple, they fall out and they attack from within, and then let in the other soldiers, and they take over Troy.
SPEAKER_01Jesus. Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay. The only problem is that one, they pissed off Zeus because they broke Zeus's law.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And two, the I mean, they win. They do what they come to do. They take Helen back to Sparta. She dismembers her face. Um, because she hates what happened. She hates that all this whole thing started because of her. Um she dismembers her face? She slashes her face, like scarring her of her face. And little Little Bro says, this is the face that lost that launched, excuse me, launched over a thousand ships. I don't even think it could launch 500 now. Yeah. So it's really sad. I feel bad for Helen. Anyways, when the war, the war itself took 10 years. Okay. Now to go home, oh fucking, thank God. We're ready to get back to our wives and our kids, and this was a war we didn't even fucking want. It had nothing to do with us. It didn't even benefit us. It was all for big bro. Um, they end up stopping off at an island to uh find food, rest up for the night, continue on. Okay. So they stop off, and with his massive ego coming off of this big win, and it caused an total uh disaster. After escaping, there was a cyclops on this island. And this poor cyclops, all he wanted to do was herd his sheep and make cheese. He literally made cheese and herded sheep.
SPEAKER_01Did they fuck him up?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he had one eye, right? Yeah. Um, they went into his his cave for like a night's rest, realized what the fuck he was, was like, oh shit, we're in trouble. Cyclops did kill some of his men, but he's hungry. Okay, he had a snack. He killed some men.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay, but he didn't he didn't kill all of you at once. So you know, it's not malicious. You want his property. What the hell? Um goes to sleep, wake up, they end up um blinding the cyclops, and they try they escape. The only thing is, Odysseus, with his pride and his ego, turns around and says, and one bitch shoots an arrow at the cyclops. You want to know what the plot twist is? The cyclops is Poseidon's son, the ruler of the sea. How the fuck else are you gonna get home besides going on the sea? So what would have taken like a week to get home takes ten years and kills all of his soldiers in different ways.
SPEAKER_01Okay, okay.
SPEAKER_00Um revenge then. Oh, 100%. Like you blinded my son. Like I know he's he's a little different. He a little, you know, maybe all spectrum.
SPEAKER_03Do you know the songs you want to watch?
SPEAKER_00What?
SPEAKER_03Percy Jackson.
SPEAKER_00Okay, that's another one that you could watch. You could watch that. Clash of the Titans. Yeah. All of it. Is it accurate? Hell no, but it has to do with Greek mythology. Yeah. 100%. Yeah. Anyways, uh, Poseidon curses their voyage back home. So the key role in that is you don't always need to be the smartest man in the room to let people know that you can do shit. Pride will kill things in your life. Your ego will too. Control that shit. It's not cute. You'll end up like Odysseus and you can't get home for 20 years. And the only person who recognizes you is your blind dog off your scent. That's it.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Brother. Go see the movie. The book is hard to read, it's a hard read. So I would 100%. When I say go see the movie, I hand to the Lord. You need to go see that movie.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_02Sounds good.
SPEAKER_00Next one.
SPEAKER_02Alright, Captain.
SPEAKER_00Alright, Captain. Dante's Inferno. Again, I read the senior year of high school. I took a different English class though. So I don't know if you read this one.
SPEAKER_03I played the game.
SPEAKER_00So I didn't know it was a game.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I'm pretty sure it's based on that from like what we talked about earlier.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so why self-justification is a trap. So if you notice in Dante's placement with a different sense. Okay, so you said you played the game, so you know the layout of Dante's Inferno is a representation of hell.
SPEAKER_03But like the nine circles. Uh-huh. Nine circles, yeah.
SPEAKER_00And it's in a funnel shape because it goes down to the center of the earth. The thing that was so controversial, one, was it in general, but two, that he said that the most chorous part, the pit of hell, was cold. It's not hot.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00Um, so if you look at the levels of of how he lays out the different sins that people can do, there's things like um lust and gluttony are at the top. So they're like mild.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00Okay. Um, while like intellectual, deliberate sins like fraud, hypocrisy, and betrayal are at the very bottom with the devil himself. I don't know if you remember, I don't know if it's in the game. In the in the book, he's holding like Judas in one hand because he portrayed Jesus Christ and he's gnawing on his fucking head. Oh. The devil's gnawing on his head for eternity, forever, because he portrayed Jesus Christ. Jesus. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Yeah. I didn't finish the game, I've just watched people play the game. But it's pretty similar to what you're describing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, you can also watch um Inferno with Tom Hanks. If you guys have seen the Da Vinci Code movies, the The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demon, and then Inferno is the third installment of that. It's based off of Dante's Inferno as well.
SPEAKER_03Interesting.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, so again, roundabout is being an asshole isn't about making impulsive mistakes. So again, it if you're, you know, I'm not saying do it. Ooh, don't do it, okay? This is not for me to give you a green light, bitch. But if you're making impulsive mistakes like being lustful, okay, you keep liking that bitch's like Instagram post as you'd be liking her like half booty naked, but you got your bitch sitting right next to you. You know what I mean? Um, it's so it's so it's not really about that. You're still an asshole if you do it. But the real generalization of it is the more about rationalization and for your bad behavior and manipulating people that trust you. That's what makes you the real asshole. If you are trying to sway people, you're the real asshole. Your hypocrisy is your biggest flaw. Period. You're being an asshole. Go read a book. I know you guys are probably getting sick and tired of me talking, but I do have one more book. I read this also in my senior year of high school. I don't know if this was in yours or not. Which one was it? The Alchemist.
SPEAKER_02Uh-oh.
SPEAKER_00Nope. Alchemist.
SPEAKER_02It's an anime though.
SPEAKER_00Is it really? See? He knows the video game side of things.
SPEAKER_02I don't know if it's based on that, but we're gonna we gonna listen. You won't listen to me talking. Actually, yeah.
SPEAKER_00The alchemist, why? Um, don't be completely obsessed with your destination. You need to look around and find the beauty within the present. So in the book, the main character, uh Santiago, he wants to go find this hidden treasure. He's so excited for it. He's obsessed with it. The only thing is that when he's going around looking for this literal buried treasure, he only realizes this. He only realizes that wisdom, love, and growth that he experienced on this journey is what he really needed, and it was the real point of the mission itself. Plus, plot twist, spoiler, the treasure was where it he started, anyways. He went on this grand adventure just to find out the treasure was right where he started. Yeah. So again, high achieving adults, this is kind of a fun fact. High achieving adults often turn into inseparable narcissists because their view on life is purely through the lens of personal ambition. They only want to seek what's best for them. And they don't look around and smell the flowers, baby. Smell the roses, be humble, like what Kendlacomar said. Sit down, be humble, read a book, or whatever the fuck he says. You know what I mean? Or you're an asshole. Or you're an asshole.
SPEAKER_03Which you're probably an asshole.
SPEAKER_00You're probably an asshole.
SPEAKER_03You don't have to read the book, though.
SPEAKER_00You do have to read the book. You do have to read the book. Again, I think a lot of these, I the only one I don't know if it is or not, is the alchemist, but the rest of these I believe are made into some form adaption of a movie. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So I don't know if the the Alchemist is this alchemist is the actual anime. If that makes sense.
SPEAKER_00Oh, it's an anime, it's not like a video game?
SPEAKER_03No, it's an anime. Like an animated series. Well, it's anime, but like it's also animated.
SPEAKER_00Right. So you know what I'm saying? No. I don't watch anime, so I don't know what that hot.
SPEAKER_03Twitter is my phone.
SPEAKER_00He's gonna show me. But anyways, now, does your brain feel bonita?
unknownI feel bonita.
SPEAKER_00You feel bonita now. Oh.
SPEAKER_03No, I do though. You do? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Okay. That's good. Good.
SPEAKER_03I didn't know any of that shit, so perfect.
SPEAKER_00I'm hoping that yours and probably a lot of our listeners feel that way. You gotta get a little educated. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03I'm educated enough.
SPEAKER_00Are you? No. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um, I was thinking of full metal alchemist, and it's not the same thing.
SPEAKER_00It does not like the whole thing. Um, okay, so before we end today, yeah. Let's let's let's change the topic. Okay. Okay. What are you listening to? What are you watching?
SPEAKER_03Um, listening to We're going back to Sleep Token. Um, their sundowning album, they did a cover of Whitney Houston's uh I Wanna Dance with Somebody. Cute. And it's so fucking good.
SPEAKER_01Hell yeah.
SPEAKER_03Um movie or show? St. Dennis Medical Jesus Christ. Whoa. St. Dennis Medical on Netflix.
SPEAKER_00So the medical show?
SPEAKER_03It kind of feels it gives like office vibes almost. Oh.
SPEAKER_00So like Scrubs?
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um, the one girl from Bridesmaids, uh, The Blonde, she's in it. She's like the medical director. Oh, nice. She's it's really fucking funny. You guys should watch it. Okay. Yeah. It's I mean, it is like a medical show, but like it's more like it's more comedy-based, I guess you could say. Yeah. So, but it's funny.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Cool.
SPEAKER_03What about you?
SPEAKER_00So listening to it's tough. I I'm kind of like you. I switch back and forth. I was listening to some um uh divorced dad rock. You ever heard of the band Saliva?
SPEAKER_03Oh, okay. Yeah, click click boom.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, okay. I was listening to that. I think that's pretty that sounds about right.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I love that.
SPEAKER_00Sometimes I think I'm wondering why she's so crazy in my stomach, is because she's already headbanging.
SPEAKER_03Oh, yeah, absolutely.
SPEAKER_00100%. Yeah, she has to be. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There's no other way. Man, hello.
SPEAKER_00Um, and then watching, obviously. Um watch the Odyssey. But Jim and I just started the silo on Apple TV.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Pretty pretty gas. Pretty gas. I like it a lot. We just started three. We just started season two. Oh, okay. Yeah, it's pretty good.
SPEAKER_03You guys should watch uh Widows Bay as well. I already said that, but you did, you tested that to me. You should you should watch it. I think you guys would like it. Yeah. It's more like a like a thriller. It's not really horror per se, but pretty good. I watched it.
SPEAKER_00That's like comedy too. I saw it, I looked it up.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's pretty funny as well. It's more it's more focused on like psychological, not psychological, more like a thriller, I guess. Okay.
SPEAKER_01So pretty funny.
