#14 - Em Roblin: Thriving, Flourishing, and Cultural Unicorns
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode, Sam Bell speaks with leadership practitioner, systems designer, and PhD candidate Em Roblin about thriving as vitality and learning, and flourishing as something we build together across an ecosystem.
Em works at moments of transition, when something new is emerging. She has over two decades of experience across thirty countries and has designed and facilitated transformational leadership programs for multinationals, venture capital firms, startup ecosystems, and business schools. Her work spans inclusive leadership, cross-cultural collaboration, thriving cultures in frontier environments, and learning ecosystems designed for adaptive capacity.
Em is also a PhD candidate in Transformative Studies at the California Institute of Integral Studies and a Fellow of the International Humanistic Management Association, bridging rigorous transdisciplinary research with co-creative practice.
In this conversation, Em shares what she is learning through deep work, research, and facilitation, including what it looks like to design playful, low-risk spaces where people can practise leadership in complexity, sense what is needed, and learn in real time.
Together, they explore the new "Flourishing Lab", the “hold the inquiry” stance, cultural unicorns who lift communities, and how we can shift from envy into celebration as part of building healthy cultures.
This episode explores:
• Thriving as vitality and learning
• Why achievement can still feel like stagnation
• Flourishing in an ecosystem: “If you’re not alright, can I be alright?”
• Deep work as a habit in family and client ecosystems
• The Flourishing Lab: leadership simulation practice, reflection, and integration
• “What is this situation asking of me now?”
• Flourishing in complexity: uncertainty, paradox, and staying human
• Cultural unicorns: people who see, hear, and lift others in ways that build health
• Turning envy into celebration and path-trust, as a leadership capacity
