Why Some Days Emotionally Hit Harder Than Others {Ep 236}
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Some days you wake up and everything feels heavier. You’re still doing the work, answering the messages, showing up for clients, and keeping life moving, yet underneath it all you feel tired, flat, irritated, or strangely sensitive and you can’t point to a single cause. We’ve been taught to judge ourselves for that, especially as women, instead of getting curious about what’s really happening.
I unpack why emotions are not always random or logical. Your nervous system and subconscious can react to old experiences, family dynamics, grief, loss of identity, pressure, loneliness, comparison, or quiet disappointment. I also talk about a crucial twist. Emotional overwhelm doesn’t always look like tears. It can look like numbness, brain fog, procrastination, withdrawal, or overworking, and “staying busy” can become a way to avoid what needs attention. (And yes, if something feels off physically, it’s always worth checking things out medically too.)
I lean into the body’s role as an early warning system and how tightness, fatigue, heaviness, restlessness, or tears can be useful data, not something to suppress. The aim isn’t to become emotionless. It’s to recognise yourself sooner, respond instead of react, and stop abandoning yourself when something tender rises.
If you’re a woman running a business or carrying a lot for others, this conversation will help you build emotional awareness, resilience, and healthier self-support. Subscribe, share this with a friend who’s been pushing through, and leave a review so more people can find Tuesday Talks with Darleen.
Hello and Welcome to The Aligned Path with Darleen
My name is Darleen and I support business women to have a Heartfelt Connection to their Business through working with their intuition.
You love your business as it has all started coming together and now you understand that Mindset, Spirituality and Intuition are just as important as the logical parts of business. When you work with your intuition in business you can make sound business decisions that you have confidence in; become more confident in yourself as a business woman; and have the ability to say no to things and people that are not aligned.

Welcome And The Big Question
SPEAKER_00Do you have some days that hit emotionally harder than others? Welcome to Tuesday Talks with Darlene. I'm Darlene, and today this episode is about understanding when days hit more emotionally than others. We've, you know, have you ever had one of those days where suddenly you feel emotional, tired, irritated, exhausted, flat, overwhelmed, or even what people call sensitive, and yet you fully don't understand why. Nothing major has happened. You're still working, you're still functioning, you're still replying to the messages, emails, you're running your business and you're showing up for people. Yet underneath all of that, something feels heavy. And what makes it even harder is that many of us women immediately judge ourselves for this instead of stopping to ask what might actually be happening underneath the surface. Because sometimes emotions aren't random. Sometimes something deeper has been touched emotionally, even if we can't immediately explain it. Now emotional triggers are often deeper than the moment. The body and the nervous system remember experiences. Emotional reactions are not always logical or conscious. Think about that. Our emotional reactions are not always logical or conscious. Our subconscious is always working, it's always there. And certain moments can activate old emotions, dates, conversations, memories, expectations,
Hidden Triggers Beneath The Surface
SPEAKER_00our family dynamics. There could have been loss. And that loss is not just loss of a person, it could be loss of identity. There could be pressure. You might even be feeling lonely. You might be comparing yourself, or there might even be disappointment. And these can quietly affect us. We don't always know they are until something comes up. And this is where we're reacting to more than today. This emotional weight may come from something unresolved, unprocessed, or emotionally connected to a deeper experience. And this is where for me I have been doing so much work on myself since my abilities opened. Does it mean I don't have emotional emotionally charged days? No, I still do. Yet because of the awareness, I'm able to pick things up quicker. Now, does it mean that there are days where I can pick things up and just, you know, okay, it's all done? No. There are days where I actually will need to rest. And this is why I'm talking about this. Because I want you to have the awareness. It is time we start talking about things like this. As women, and I'm yes, I'm speaking for women, we have been taught so many things that are so wrong. We've been taught to dismiss our own emotional reactions. I shouldn't feel this way, or I should be over this by now. That was one of the things that happened to me a long time ago. Is something happened and someone said, Aren't you over that by now? Like, hello. The difficult part comes when that emotional activation doesn't always show up as obvious sadness. We think, okay, emotions, it should be, you know, sadness, all that kind of stuff should be sadness. No. And also, when we become emotionally overwhelmed, this doesn't always look like emotions. That's something to be aware of. So emotional overwhelm doesn't always look emotional. And you might be thinking, what
When Overwhelm Looks Like Irritation
SPEAKER_00emotional overload can appear as irritation, exhaustion. You could even feel numb. There might be brain frog. Now remember, these can also be, you know, I'm not um talking medical. I do want you to be aware that if this is happening, also it's up to you, but just check things out medically. There could also be um procrastination, get that word out, withdrawal from society, might even be withdrawal from your business, from um community, from family. You might be overworking. Instead of you know, working your hours that you work in your business, you go for longer because you think, you know, I've really got to do this. I'm not I'm not getting things done. What am I doing? Or it could even be you're sensitive emotionally. We as women have become skilled at functioning while emotionally overwhelmed. We've been taught to keep going, put everyone else first. You keep producing, you keep helping, you keep leading, and you're pushing through while disconnecting from what you actually feel. Because how often have you been told, oh, you're just emotional? Oh, you know, like things like that, and that unfortunately it still happens. You know, it still happens. And remember that busyness can become emotional avoidance. And yes, I'm saying that because I've done it, I've done it myself, and I still do it occasionally. I keep myself busy to avoid the emotions that are coming up for me. Because sometimes I don't want to go into it. Now, that's not healthy because we do want to look at what's coming up and why. We're not able to work through things if we don't. And remember that busyness could be staying productive, and it can sometimes feel safer than slowing down long enough to feel what's underneath. As I said,
Busyness As Emotional Avoidance
SPEAKER_00it can be tough. And if you've been following me for a while, you know I talk about the body and how often this it signals emotions before the mind understands. The body knows first. There could be tightness, fatigue, heaviness, frustration, tears or restlessness. All of this is information. The body is talking to you. And there's books about um, there's actually written books written, I can't remember what it's called, um, the body's always talking or something, and it goes into what it says. So if you're feeling pain, say in the right shoulder, it's telling you something specific. If you have a dry throat all the time, it's telling you something specific. When we stop judging the emotion, we can start responding to ourselves differently. And I do say respond because reaction for me is an emergency thing. When I react, it for me it's an emergency. That's why I
The Body Notices Before The Mind
SPEAKER_00talk about respond. Now it's time to start supporting yourself instead of fighting yourself. Not every emotional day needs fixing, and I do say the word fixing, even though I don't really like it, I do say it because you know that's what you understand. Sometimes emotions need that acknowledgement, they need to be heard, and they need this more than suppression. Think about it. When what does it feel like when you've really been heard? That is what you want, that is what your body wants. It wants to be heard, it wants to be acknowledged. These emotions are coming up for a reason, and self-awareness creates choice. Look at pausing to ask, what am I actually feeling? And that can change the entire experience. Our mind loves questions, it wants puzzles to solve, and you know what? Support can look simple and practical. Things like resting, journaling, slowing down, reducing the pressure, limiting that comparison, moving the body gently, or speaking to someone that you know is safe. That can be one of the hardest things is finding someone we feel safe with. Because you know, maybe we've had some betrayal, maybe we've thought we could trust somebody, and they let us down.
Responding With Support Not Judgment
SPEAKER_00Emotional awareness is not a weakness. Understanding yourself emotionally is part of learning to run a business. You don't need to justify your emotions for them to matter. I'm actually getting emotional now. Your experience is still valid, even if it doesn't look dramatic from the outside. Now, some days, oh getting emotional. Okay, some days do hit harder emotionally, not because you're weak or dramatic or incapable, because you're human. You are here having a human experience, and we have emotions. Underneath the productivity, the routines, the responsibilities, and the pressure to keep functioning, there are still emotions, memories, disappointments, grief, expectations, and experiences living in this body. The goal isn't to become emotionless, the goal is learning how to recognize yourself sooner, respond to yourself with more honesty, and stop abandoning yourself every time something emotional rises to the surface. And I do talk about abandoning yourself. If you're not recognizing your emotions going into it, you are abandoning yourself. You're literally in a life um raft pushing yourself off and going, yep, see you later. It is time. It is time. Sometimes emotions are not interruptions, sometimes they're signals that something inside you needs care, understanding, attention, or even space. Thank you so much for watching, listening, subscribing, sharing, commenting. That helps support me as a small business owner, and I really appreciate it. Thank you very much, and I'll see you next time.
