So please, please remember the supplement industry is not regulated in any meaningful way. It's not regulated for potency, it's not regulated for dose, it's not really regulated for contaminants. And it's almost a guarantee that 90% of them will be doing you no good. That's not because supplements can't be useful, many of them can. However, people keep making the same mistake over and over again. Even doctors. Stick around and find out. One of the things that I run into time after time after time in advising people on supplements and off-label drugs, which will be another discussion, during their cancer therapy, I keep coming back to the same issue. Almost 90% of the time, those supplements aren't doing anything of value. The reason isn't that those supplements can't have value, it's something different. It's something that even doctors usually don't get. When you look at those trials, they almost always start with cell culture trials. Cancer cells grown in a dish. And you can find almost always effects for compounds against the cancer at that level. But then you start getting to human beings. How much does a human being have to take in order to get that concentration that you need in the bloodstream? People don't think about dose, which is really strange because we know the effect of dosage in daily life. If you're making a soup and you're starting with vegetable ingredients, you need to add salt to it or else it's not going to taste good. If you're making a giant pot of soup for a large amount of family and friends, and it calls for five tablespoons of salt, and you put in one teaspoon of salt, how is that gonna taste? It's going to taste bland, it's gonna taste weak, it's not gonna taste good. You know the effect of dose, and yet we don't talk about doses, especially for supplements. We talk about doses for drugs, but we don't talk about doses for supplements. And there's a reason why. We think we know. Even doctors think they know. Again, vitamins, there are measurements, international units or micrograms or something like that. But when it comes to virtually all supplements, we buy a bottle, we look at it, we see the label, and the label says take two capsules twice a day, or something like that. And people think that that is based on something. And usually it's not, sometimes it is, and even when it is, it's not based on what you think. So let's take a step back. For a while I worked with a vitamin and nutritional supplement company. Fairly large suppliers, at least at that time, and that was during the time in between my master's, when I went back for a PhD. It was a very educational time. I learned a lot about the business. However, one of them that was very, very eye-opening for me was this dosage issue. Dosages set on supplement bottles have nothing, nothing, absolutely nothing to do with how much of that thing in the pill is necessary to have an effect. They're usually not based on anything. They're based on what are people willing to take and how much material can we pack into a pill and make it sound reasonable. If the dosages are based on anything, it's not efficacy, it's contaminants. A regular thing that I found was that dosages would be set by not the active ingredient, but they would be set by the amount of lead that was in that active ingredient. How much could a person take and not pass a threshold for having to report the amount of lead content in that supplement? That is a standard practice in the supplement industry. And so when you see a bottle that says take two capsules twice a day, that's four capsules a day. That's probably because if you get to five capsules a day or six capsules a day, you're above that threshold for lead. Now, most states don't have regulations on that. And federally we don't really have regulations on that either. A company could sell you lead powder in capsules and it's a supplement, it's not regulated. They could. But in some states, particularly California with the Clean Water Drinking Act, above a certain threshold it has to be reported, it has to be called out, and none of the supplement companies want to do that. So if they ship to California, which all of the large players do, they try and keep that level down, and that sets their cap. So what you read on the bottle does not necessarily have anything to do with how much of that supplement you need in order to have an effect. It's a very common thing. I was talking with a client recently, it's a very common thing for a recommendation to be one gram, one big soft gel, when if you look at the clinical trials, you actually need six, eight, ten grams. So that's ten pills a day, not one pill a day, in order to get to a threshold where that supplement actually benefits you. Below that, it's not doing anything. And that's the vast majority of supplement consumption. Many people take large numbers of supplements thinking that they're doing a lot of benefit for themselves, when honestly, if you just picked one of them and took enough of it to do something, you would get a larger benefit. You're taking all of these things, and none of them are benefiting you because you don't have enough of them, enough of any individual one. This is also a problem with the tendency in the wellness and supplement industry to take one ingredient that has good data behind it and then add a bunch of other stuff to it. Theanine, for instance, is very good for sleep, and sleep is critical for health. And so, great, a theanine supplement makes a lot of sense, and most of the theanine supplements come along with FABA, which doesn't really do a whole lot for you. They come along with five-hydroxytryptophan, which is a completely different thing. And again, even if each individual ingredient in this pill is beneficial, by combining all of them, you don't get enough of any one of them to do what needs to be done. So, again, this is one of the things that I work with clients on is taking a look at the supplement lists, comparing it to what's actually been shown to provide clinical benefit, and then that's not enough. A few perfect examples of this are turmeric or curcumin. Most folks take one or two grams a day, and you really need somewhere between six and eight grams in order to have an effect. Similarly, omega-3 fatty acids can be really great. Most people take a gram or two, you really need more like four or five. Another great example is berberine, which isn't so much an anti-cancer thing, but a whole body support. Most folks take a single capsule of 500 milligrams, and you really need at least three times that. The biggest example of this is modified citrus pectin, which some people take to prevent metastases. They often take one scoop, two and a half grams, and honestly, you need at least five grams three times a day to have any effect whatsoever. When it's been shown to provide clinical benefit, how much do you need to do that? And again, virtually always the doses that are required to have a beneficial effect for you are much, much higher than what's on the bottle. And then once you get those levels, then there's a conversation that we can have, that you can have with your doctor about which supplements make the most sense so that you're not taking 80 pills a day. You may be taking 20, but you can focus on the ones that are actually doing you good and at a dose that allows them to do that good. So please, please remember the supplement industry is not regulated in any meaningful way. It's not regulated for potency, it's not regulated for dose, it's not really regulated for contaminants. So when you see a number on the side of a bottle, it doesn't necessarily mean anything. Please find a way, whether it's through me or some other person, some other service, if you're good at reading research literature, do it yourself, dive into the research literature and find out how much is actually necessary to have that beneficial effect that they claim. It's almost always larger and it almost always requires looking at your supplement pile and figuring out what's the highest value so that you can take just those things and at the dose that helps you. Please don't waste your time taking a little bit of everything. That just wastes your time, energy, and money. Take enough of the things that matter to benefit your health. Thank you.
