Today we're going to talk about something no one should have to say, but apparently I do. We're going to talk about the role of parasites in cancer, and we're going to talk about how to think about claims that you hear online to try and figure out whether they're true or meaningful or not. Because that's a really important skill since the internet is flooded with all sorts of information, all of it being presented confidently as if it's true. So here's how I think about claims on the internet. Hello, and welcome to Elevating Cancer Treatment, where we explain the science and debunk myths to help you navigate your health journey. My background is a little different. Beyond educating about cancer, I'm actually designing new drugs that are defining the future of oncology. This direct hands-on experience offers me a very different perspective of how these cancer treatments work on the body, interact with the cancer cells, and cause side effects. And these are insights that I'm excited to share with you. So if you spend long enough on the internet, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube comments, anywhere, you're going to see someone saying that cancer is just parasites. It's worm infections or something else, and you have to cure it with wormwood extract or black walnut extract or ivermectin or fenbendazole. And let's take a look at that and see if it makes sense. So, as a scientist, one of the things that I do when I come across a claim is I think, if this is true, let's assume for a moment it's true. If this thing is true, what else must be true? Because it's really hard to disprove things for which you can't get evidence. It's very difficult to take samples from everyone who's had cancer and test them and see if there's parasites, if there's worms in the cancer. That's a claim, and if you say, well, people don't see that, then the claim that goes along with it is, well, nobody looked for it, or the doctors ignored it. And that makes it almost impossible to evaluate that. So what else must be true? So let's take a step back. Let's think about the world as a whole. Where do people have the biggest problems with parasitic infections? Worms, bugs, all sorts of other stuff. Where do people have those types of issues? It's usually tropical regions. We're talking West Africa, East Africa, Southeast Asia, Central America. Those are the places where people have very, very high disease burdens from invasive parasites. So what do we see when we look at those countries? If the claim were true that parasites caused cancer, and let me be clear, some certain parasites do increase your chances of cancer. They don't cause it. The continual low-grade inflammation from worms burrowing through your liver cause damage that will predispose you to cancer. But what do we see when we look at populations? The population in the world that has the highest incidence of parasitic infections is in West Africa. That's the highest. You can Google that, every place will say the same. West Africa has the highest parasite abundance. You know what? West Africa also has the lowest cancer incidence. This is exactly the opposite of what you would see if parasites indeed were a cause of cancer, a significant cause of cancer. This is the exact opposite. In the United States, we have three and a half times the risk of cancer as somebody in West Africa does. Clearly, parasites aren't driving cancer incidents. It's something else. And we talked about it before. There's a whole episode, it's one of our first episodes on Myths About Cancer, talks about this. The biggest driver, the single biggest driver of cancer worldwide, isn't pollution, it isn't even genetics, it's age. It's age. And the population in the United States lives to be, on average, much older than the population in West Africa. So this lines up with what we know about cancer. Age is the predominant factor, not parasites. People in places with heavy parasite loads tend to die early. They don't get old enough to have cancer, which is why the cancer rates in West Africa are so low. They are under one-third of what they are here in the United States. Now let's take another step back and think about what's another thing that we could think about. Okay, we have really, really, really good antiparasite meds. I've talked before about ivermectin and fenbendazole for cancer, and the data there is not good at all for ivermectin and weak at best for fenbendazole, but they work spectacularly well for parasites. So again, if cancer was caused by parasites, what would we expect to see from these drugs? Particularly ivermectin. Fenbenzole has a problem that it can't get really out of the intestinal tract into your body. You can't really get enough of a dose to do much of anything unless it's massive. But ivermectin gets into your system rapidly, easily, and it's very good at clearing parasites. So if cancer was caused by a parasite, we would expect ivermectin to be able to deal with it the way that it deals with parasites. The treatment course for ivermectin for a worm infection is one dose. That's it. One single dose. At most, one dose every six months. What do we see with people who have cancer who are taking ivermectin? Even when they say that ivermectin was the cure for them, they take ivermectin for years. They take it almost constantly. Why would you take a medication two times a week, four times a week, every day for decades if it's a drug that should cure the condition with one dose? Why do you need ongoing dosing? That doesn't make any sense. So again, here are two clear examples. Cancer incidence around the world, and yes, I know I didn't talk about Southeast Asia. The incidence rates there are lower than the US. So is Central America. The incidence rates are lower there than in the US. In general, the US and parts of Western Europe have the highest cancer incidence rates. We don't have the highest here. It is higher in certain parts of Europe where smoking is still a significant issue. That has driven the rates even higher. But the idea that parasites cause cancer, we've got two things that must be true if the initial claim is true, and they're both false. Ivermectin doesn't cure cancer in one dose, the way that it cures parasites in one dose. And we have higher, not lower, cancer incidence here in the US than in places with very high parasite rates. So again, I hope this wasn't just entertaining, but it gives you a way to think through claims that you see on the internet, because frankly, I can't debunk everything. New claims come up so fast and so often that it would take me a week to undo what it takes someone five minutes to claim online. So hopefully this gives you more tools, more ammunition for thinking through the claims that you see and trying to figure out whether they make sense in reality for you and your cancer journey.
