But you don't want to miss something that could actually help. So how do you figure it out? Today we're talking about vitamin K2. The good, the bad, and the inconvenient. And specifically the claim that it can kill prostate cancer. Stick around because the details matter a lot, especially the dose. And if you get that wrong, the whole thing falls apart. The internet says that vitamin K2 can kill prostate cancer cells at concentrations between 50 and 100 micromolar. Sounds impressive. But there are three really important questions. Is that actually true? Can humans even reach those levels? And are those doses safe? Unlike many other claims, we have quite a lot of data on this one. The answers are surprisingly interesting and supportive, but with a significant twist. First, this is not new. This idea isn't new at all. There's actually been a lot of research on vitamin K2 for decades. And here's the first interesting thing. This isn't mainly about prostate cancer. Why'd they focus on that? In fact, prostate cancer isn't even one of the most responsive cancers. Most of this research comes from cell line studies, and if you've watched this channel before, you know how I feel about those. Cell line studies are like testing a race car by reving the engine in a closed garage. Can it be useful? Yes. Does it reflect the real world? Not remotely. But something about these studies stands out. Most supplements just slow cancer growth. Vitamin K2? It appears to actually kill the cancer cells outright. That's important. Not slows, not suppresses, kills them. This is a cytotoxic treatment, not a cytostatic one that just keeps you in a holding pattern. And this happens across many different cancer types. Lots of them. So the cancers that respond best include blood cancers like leukemias, myelomas, and B cell lymphomas, colorectal cancer, lung cancer. Those are the most sensitive. Then you have the middle group, which is really big. You've got prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, bladder cancer, gastric, liver. All those are still responsive, and a lot more. They're just not the strongest. And then there's the bottom. Breast cancer takes a lot, twice as much as the others I just listed. Calangiocarcinoma doesn't seem to kill them, it just slows down growth. And glioblastoma, it's actually the worst. It needs about 20 times more vitamin K2 to get the same effect as any of those others I mentioned. And that makes this approach unrealistic. Dose is really critical, and we've talked about it extensively. For supplements in general, so here's why I actually trust this set of data, this cell line data, more than most cell line research. It's been repeated across tons of labs, different countries, different cancer types, many different cell lines, dozens upon dozens of different types of cell lines, and they all land around the same numbers, with those few exceptions. Most cancer cells start dying between 25 and 50 micromolar. That kind of consistency is rare and shocking actually. Another interesting thing from these studies, everyone they've checked, the timing. Most of the cancer cell death happens within two to three days, which means this isn't something that works slowly over months or that you need to be on for the rest of your entire life. It's more like a short burst treatment. Think of it like a pulse. Very short, very intense, and then you stop. This becomes very important later on when we start talking about the dosing again. Alright, what about animal studies? The animal studies show very similar results, but they're a little hard to interpret with the dosing, because they put it in the water for the mice. And it's impossible to know how much vitamin K2 they actually consumed. One study gave it by injection, so we can measure it, but that's not how you'd be taking it either, so it doesn't really help. Frankly, I'm surprised they didn't feed the mice with fixed amounts of vitamin K2 in oil. That's the approach most other studies take to ensure consistency. Now, most of these involve mice implanted with human tumors, which is useful for us, but not a perfect model. There are only a couple of these studies of mice with mouse tumors implanted in them instead of human, and that would eliminate the cross-species rejection as a possible reason for efficacy. Still, some interesting synergies show up. Vitamin K2 works better when it's combined with certain treatments, particularly hyperthermia, raising your core body temperature, like we talked about in this episode, or the targeted cancer drug sorofeneb, or chemotherapy drugs like phiflora or uracol. So it may not just work alone, it might also enhance other therapies. Now let's get to the part everyone should care about, and I do, the human studies. And unfortunately, as often there aren't many. Most of them are prevention studies, not treatment studies, and they're not great. Some show that low vitamin K2 is linked with higher cancer risk. Some show that higher levels of vitamin K2 are possibly protective. But the studies are messy. They don't measure supplementation, they measure blood levels. It makes it hard to interpret. And this includes those prostate cancer and breast cancer prevention studies. Since we don't know what people's vitamin K intake type or patterns were, it's really hard to judge how meaningful these are. Especially since vitamin K from the diet implies that the folks in the highest and lowest groups that are being compared against each other had radically different diets. There's lots of ways that can mess up the data. Now, there is one cancer where vitamin K2 looks very promising in humans, and that's just because there were three studies on it, and that's liver cancer, and these ones were done well. Because this is not for prevention, it's about recurrence. Patients had tumors removed or ablated, killed. Then they were given 45 milligrams of vitamin K2 daily. The result? Significantly lower recurrence rates. That's very encouraging. However, it's still limited data. Now, before we talk about dose, which you know I want to do, there's one thing you absolutely need to know. Several of those cell line studies looked at different forms of vitamin K, K1, K2, K3, even K5. Didn't know about that one. And the K2 subtypes MK4 and 7. So several of those studies showed that vitamin K3 works better, especially glioblastoma, where it had reasonable and achievable doses, unlike K2. So if you look at the references linked down below, you'll see that. But there's a reason you don't see K3 supplements. Vitamin K3 can cause hemolytic anemia, which means it can literally make your red blood cells rupture. It used to be used in humans decades ago, but it was removed from the market because of that specific issue. So yes, it's stronger, it might work for you, but it also comes with a very real risk. If you do decide to go this route, please let your medical team know, as they might have to give you an emergency transfusion. They have to be prepared. Alright, so here's where things get fun, and by fun I mean we're gonna do math. So the average human body contains about five liters of blood. Not gonna do it in Imperial, sorry. K2 MK4 is 445 grams per mole, chemistry nerd here, and we need to hit a minimum final concentration of 50 micromolar, preferably a little bit higher. To reach that concentration, matching what was used in all those cell line studies, you'd need to consume 111 milligrams of vitamin K2 per day. Not micrograms. What all of your supplements are measured in, milligrams. And that's where things take a left turn, because most supplements, again, they're 100 micrograms, which is 10 times smaller than a milligram. So you need a lot of capsules. Those regular ones, 111 milligrams, that's 110 mil capsules. God, the numbers are hard. So you need a lot of capsules. 111 milligrams at a tenth of a milligram per capsule, that's a thousand plus capsules per day. Even the strongest supplement I found contains about 1.18 milligrams per capsule. That's life extension super K. To reach that target dose, you need 95 capsules per day. Yes, 95. That's more than an entire bottle. There's only 90 capsules in a bottle. Every day. The real game changer is also from Life Extension. It's 45 milligrams, so you would need three capsules per day. This actually opens up treatment for breast cancer as well. You'd still need six capsules per day. Still doesn't make sense for calangiocarcinoma or glioblastoma. Is that safe? Surprisingly, yes. Yes it is. Vitamin K2 is very safe and it's absorbed very well if it's taken with fat. But swallowing 95 capsules a day isn't exactly practical. Which brings us back to the earlier point. The effects take two to three days. This might make more sense as a short pulse therapy, say three days a month, or three days every couple of months. It's still a lot of capsules to burn through for those three days though. It's literally hard to swallow. So, based on the research, vitamin K2 might be worth exploring for leukemias, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, probably prostate and most other cancers as well. But probably not worth your time if you've got glangiocarcinoma or glioblastoma. And again, completely avoid vitamin K3 unless you are looking for an absolute hail mary. So, where does vitamin K2 stand? It's not an easy miracle cure, and it's not nonsense. It's something scientifically interesting and achievable if only barely. It reliably kills many types of cancer cells in the lab, and it shows promise in animals. It has a little bit of human data, which is encouraging, and particularly in liver cancer, with some nice synergies. The big challenge, as almost always, is dose. Reaching the levels used in the studies is possible, but it's not convenient. If you're still looking for something that might give you an edge, this is one that actually has real science behind it. Especially because it is a short-term use, you can do almost anything for three days. So this kind of analysis, digging into studies, calculating doses, figuring out what exactly works and where and why, is exactly what we do for our clients.
