Funnels vs websites: what is the difference, and which one does a beginner actually need to start selling digital products online?
This is one of the most common points of confusion for beginners entering the digital marketing space. Everyone talks about having a website. But when you are just starting out and you have one clear offer to sell, a website might not be what you need at all.
In this episode, we break down the difference between a website and a funnel in plain, beginner friendly language. You will learn what each one does, how they work differently, and why most beginners are better off starting with a funnel before they ever think about building a full website.
Using real examples from the Grow With Laura business, including the One Decision Workbook and She Started Here, we show you exactly what a funnel looks like in practice and why it converts better than a website for a beginner with a focused offer.
You will learn:
What a website is and what it is actually designed to do
What a funnel is and how it guides someone toward one specific action
Why too many options on a website can work against you as a beginner
Why funnels convert better for beginners selling digital products
When a website makes sense and when a funnel is the smarter starting point
If you have been wondering whether you need a website to start your digital business, this episode will give you a clear and honest answer.
This is part of the Delivery Platform Series, walking beginners through the tools and infrastructure behind a real digital business, one step at a time.

Welcome to the Grow with Laura podcast, where we talk about building income online as a beginner without confusion, pressure, or pretending to have it all figured out. My name is Laura, and this podcast is for digital beginners who are curious about online business, digital marketing, and using social media as a tool to build something meaningful. If you are learning, exploring, or trying to find your footing in this space, you are in the right place. In the last episode, we talked about what a delivery platform is and why it is the engine room of your digital business. We broke down everything a delivery platform handles for you automatically, from collecting payments to delivering your products to following up with your buyers by email. And I shared how a delivery platform is what powers both the One Decision workbook and she started here behind the scenes. Today we are going one level deeper into something that confuses almost every beginner the moment they start thinking seriously about their business setup. The difference between a funnel and a website. Because these two things are not the same, they do not work the same way, they do not serve the same purpose, not all the time. And understanding the difference will save you a lot of time, a lot of money, and a lot of unnecessary frustration. So let's get right into it. Okay, let me start here. When most beginners think about building an online business, the first thing that comes to mind is I need a website, right? And I completely understand why. A website feels official, it feels professional, it feels like proof that your business is real. Trust me, that's what I always thought too. But here is what no one tells you a website and a funnel are two completely different things. And for most beginners selling digital products or building a simple online business, a funnel is actually what you need first. Not a website. And I'm not taking anything away from a website because a website is huge, it's valid and it's needed. But when do you actually need it? That's the key question. Okay, so let me break both of them down clearly so you can understand what each one does and why it matters. Let us start with a website. A website is a collection of pages that gives people information about you, your business, and what you offer. It usually has a home page, an about page, a services or products page, maybe a blog and a contact page and some other pages. You know, a website is designed to be explored. Someone lands on it, they browse around, they read about you, they look at what you offer, and then they decide what to do next. The visitor is in control. They choose where to go, they choose how long to stay, they choose whether to reach out or leave. So, a website is great for building credibility, it is great for showing the full picture of your business, it is great for SEO search engine optimization, which means getting found on Google over time. It is great for businesses that have multiple offerings and need a central home online. Okay, but here is a challenge for beginners. A website requires time to build properly, it requires money either to pay someone to build it or to pay for a platform that does it well. And most importantly, a website on its own does not guide someone towards a specific action, it gives them options, and options for a beginner trying to make their first sale can actually work against you. So let's be clear a website is awesome, but it depends on what you're looking for to do with the website or for yourself, right? Because when someone has too many choices, they often make none, right? So now let us talk about a funnel, okay? Remember, we're talking about beginners here. So let's let's keep things in context. A funnel is a focused, step-by-step path that guides one specific person towards one specific action. We talked about funnels. Usually a funnel is like a journey, right? There are no extra pages, there's no browsing around, there's no distraction. A funnel says, Here is exactly what I I want, here is exactly I'm so sorry, because I was thinking about it, right? There's no going up and down, right? So a funnel says to you, here is exactly where I want you to go, here is exactly what I want you to do, and here's exactly what you will get when you do it. So it's kind of like pointing you, okay, you're taking this journey. There's no there's no turning back, there's no go past go, you're going straight, right? A basic funnel for a beginner might look like like this someone sees your content on social media and clicks a link. They land on a page that offers them something valuable for free, maybe a guide, a checklist, or a resource. They enter their name and email to get it. They receive it automatically. And now you have their email and the relationship begins. That is a funnel. Always be thinking about funnel like a journey, okay? Simple, focused, intentional. A slightly more advanced funnel adds a step after the free resource. After someone signs up, they are taken to a page that says, Since you are here, here is something that will help you even more. And it is available at a special price. This is called an offer page or a sales page. And that is where your digital product leaves. The Vista does not have to go looking for it, you are guiding them there directly. This is why funnels convert better than websites for beginners. Let's be clear now. Not because a website is bad, let's be clear, let's not take things out of context. Laura said, uh-uh, okay. But because a funnel removes distraction and focuses attention on one outcome. You see, a website, you know, you're showing you so many different things. A funnel is kind of going straight to one thing, right? Well, most of the time, one thing, right? So let me give you a real example from my own business. When someone finds me online and wants the one decision workbook, they do not go to a website and look around. You usually come into my site through uh my my my opt-in page, which is where I give you like a little guide, like a like a guide, right? Uh, so you come in through my opt-in page. Um, 10 reasons to know if you're ready. Because you know, it's all about your offer, right? Like, I want I want you to know that you are ready. I I know you're ready, but I want you to know that you're ready, right? So once you do that, you get in there, you get you click on it, you go in, you get it, you click on it, and you get the uh PDF. You read that while you're in there, too. I also say something uh like you know, while you're here, you want to check on about your one decision workbook, which really is huge, which is the part I'm trying to get you to, right? So you don't have to go around looking around like on a website. So you now click on that, that takes you directly to a page about the workbook. That page tells them what it is, who it is for, and what they will work away with. Because you need to know what you're purchasing, so I make sure of that, and then you buy it, you receive it, and it's done. So no really browsing around, no getting distracted by other pages, no wondering what to do next. The funnel guides you from start to finish, and the same is true for she started here, which is my flagship offer. She started here. There is a page that explains the program clearly who it is for, what is included, and how to join. The funnel does the work of guiding someone from curious to committed without me having to be there every single time to explain it personally. So, which one do you actually need as a beginner? My honest answer is this start with a funnel. You do not need a full website to start making money online, you need a clear offer and a focused path that guides someone towards it. That is a funnel. A website can come later if you so choose. Once you have validated your offer, made some sales, and have a fuller picture of your business to share. But right now, a funnel is faster to build, easier to manage, and more effective for a beginner who has one clear thing to sell. And the good news is that a delivery platform is exactly where you build your funnel, which is why understanding what a delivery platform is, which we covered in the last episode, and understanding what a funnel is, which we just covered now, go hand in hand. In the next episode, we are going to take this even further and talk about what you can actually build with a delivery platform. Because it is more than most beginners realize, and knowing this will help you see exactly what is possible for your business right now. Not someday, but now.
