Welcome to the Roar of Judah. Our mission is to hear God's voice above the noise of this world. And now here's your host, Dr. Mike. Hello, everyone. Welcome to another episode of The Roar of Judah. I am your host, Dr. Mike, and uh thank you for joining us today. And uh today I just wanted to share a little bit about a topic that used to scare me to death. And uh the topic we're gonna talk about is evangelism. And I I accepted Christ when I was 17 and heard the gospel, and I could not wait to get out and tell other people the good news about how much Jesus loved them and he died on a cross for them. And um so after I graduated college, I moved to Pittsburgh and the church I started attending announced that it was doing this program called Evangelism Explosion. And you know, I figured that hey, this is gonna be the program, it's gonna teach me how to do this, how to communicate the gospel, and you know, I I m maybe can become the next Billy Graham. So I believe it was eight weeks long, and you know, we met once a week and we were learning all these really cool stories and you know, ways to almost like how J Jesus used parables, like ways to use stories and uh metaphors and stuff to help people understand uh the need for Jesus and what he did for us, and and just learning all these great stories. And then it comes to the week end of week seven, and uh, you know, every week would have a little homework, like you know, practice this with you know, your family, your friends, you know, just practice in front of me or that kind of stuff. And then after week number seven, um, the assignment was, you know, now I want you to go door to door. I I think we're supposed to go to like 25 homes, just knock on the door and ask them if you can share the good news of Christ and everything that you've been learning. And that scared me to death. Like I don't have the personality to just walk up to somebody and that I don't know and just say, Hey, I'm you know, I'm gonna share the gospel with you. And uh so in that moment, I remember sitting there in that class thinking, okay, God did not make me to be an evangelist. Like I'm just not gonna go knocking door to door. Like I I love these stories, but I'm not sure what I thought was gonna happen if like once the class ended, if I thought maybe uh people were just gonna randomly walk up to me and say, Hey, can you share what you know about Jesus with me? Um But in any case, I didn't go back to the last class, I didn't do that last assignment, and was just content that you know evangelism is not for me, and I can just avoid this area and find other giftings that I have. So, you know, a couple years later, off I go to seminary, and you know, I'm studying to be a pastor, and I see one of my required courses I have to take is evangelism, and you know, kind of not real thrilled about that, and already know I'm not an evangelist, but you know, I'll go to the class, see what I learned. And so that class was so eye-opening for me, and you know, being able to dig into scripture and discover like what what evangelism actually is, um, you know, that it's not just being in your face, hey, you know, listen to what I have to tell you, um, and just walking up to random strangers, you know, not not that that's not a form of evangelism, but not everybody's gifted in that way. Uh so it's so freeing. And and here's some notes uh that I found that I took from that class as I dug into scripture and different ways that you see evangelism in the Bible. So in Acts chapter two, you find Peter being very confrontational and you know, just confronting complete strangers, telling them the need for Christ, and you know, the need for repentance, and uh, you know, so so very much like the evangelism explosion, kind of like in your face, like I have something to share, you need to hear this. Uh, but in Acts chapter 17, we find Paul using an intellectual style, and he's using reason and logic, which kind of fit more my background, and you know, I I love to have little debates with people and answer questions. Um, and uh in in John chapter 9, we find the blind man using a testimonial style, and you know, they're asking him, like, who is this Jesus? You know, what do you know about him? And is he the Messiah? And the man says, like, the only thing I know is I was once blind and now I see. Like, this is the impact he's had on my life, this is my testimony. Uh in Luke chapter 5, we find Matthew using friendship, and he's inviting all his friends to like just gather together and meet this man named Jesus. Uh, the woman at the well in John 4 uses an invitational style of evangelism. And uh after you know, he Jesus tells her about him being the living water and you know what she needs for all her contentment and fulfillment in life, you know, she goes back into her village and she invites every uh everybody, you know, come and hear this man. Um, and then also in Acts, you find Dorcas who has a very servant's heart, and you find her serving people, and you know, that as a result down the line is leading people to Christ. Um, so it was just so freeing that you know, a lot of times you pick up an evangelism book and it's being written by an author who has like the John the Baptist type style or the Peter type style, and you know, you just need to get out of your comfort zone and you need to do this. And there's some value to that. You know, there's been times God's called me to have like difficult conversations I really didn't want to have. And you know, not that it would never happen, but that's not where my skill lies. And uh, so all all that to say, you you know, I jumped all over evangelism. I actually like when I was uh on staff as a pastor, I was an outreach pastor focusing on evangelism. And uh one of the things that I absolutely loved is an outreach pastor. It's called Upward Sports. I got my shirt on for them now. And uh, you know, in our church, that was our big out outreach project. And uh, Upward Sports is a Christian sports ministry for kids, and it has the you know, the their mission is to promote promote the discovery of Jesus through sports, and uh it's an awesome program where kids are treated almost like professional athletes, you know you know, in our basketball games, the lights go out, the disco ball comes on, big inflatable tunnel gets blown up, they run through the tunnel, their name is shouted out, you know, their pictures are flashing on the screen, and uh like like I said, they they're just very like non-competitive, but you know, every basket is treated like you know they just won the NBA finals, and uh, but in the midst of all that, every practice we would have a devotion time. Um when I became the director, I also implemented what I called the gospel week. So all these devotions were like leading up to gospel week, and then we are very intentional about giving the gospel message and an invitation for people to respond to that message. Um and so in that what one of my favorite stories, I was a coach and uh it was my first year coaching for the program, and uh I got assigned, I just come on staff with the church, and they were looking for one final coach to like meet all the coaching needs for all the team, and it ended up being uh first or kindergarten and first grade um girls' basketball team. So I'm coaching and I decide, you know what, for this team I'm gonna have when we do devotions, I'm I'm gonna go have them kind of go over in the area where the parents are sitting. That way the parents can listen to. And I remember this one little girl, and her dad would bring her right from work, and you know, he was definitely like a laborer type person, um, and you know, would always come kind of like greasy and dirty, straight from work, and bring her, and he'd just be sitting in there in his work clothes and he'd just be staring at me the whole time as I'm giving these devotions over and over again. Never really, you know, I would try and talk to him throughout the season and you know, with he would say hello, but wouldn't really engage in any any kind of conversation. So we get all the way to gospel presentation week. Um you know, with my older kids, you know, if somebody wants to accept Christ, then like, you know, we we just pray right there, and then together I thought, you know, with these young kids, like I want their parents to be involved in this, and I want to make sure like they understand the decision they're making and that their parents understand as well. So as I give the gospel presentation, I say, you know, you know what, you can know that you can go to heaven forever, and uh, you know, you can have this relationship with Jesus Christ. And, you know, I just want to make sure you understand what that is. So, you know, while my other coach was gonna keep coaching, like anybody who wants to make this decision, you know, I'm gonna take you one at a time, and you know, we'll we'll bring mom or dad with you, and you know, we'll just make sure you understand the decision you're you're making and that you want to follow Jesus, and the parents can be part of this process. So, you know, I I give that presentation, and any of the kids that want to make a decision, and you know, I think I had a team of probably nine, nine or ten players, and there's like five hands that go up, so about half the team, and one of them is a little girl that brings her dad, scary dad, from work with her. And you know, so I purposely I think I waited till last to bring that girl, but you know, I'm taking the other kids in, we're just going to a separate room and just making sure, you know, what what do you understand about Jesus? Like why you know, why do you want to make a decision to follow him and making sure they understand and parents understand, and you know, we we pray with the child, and so we're kind of rotating through these kids. And then you know, I get I get to this last little girl, and you know, her dad that just came from the factory job, and we all go back into this room, and you know, I'm asking the girl, you know, what do you know? I know Jesus loves me, you know, I know I'm a sinner and I'm not perfect, and he forgives me, and I want to go to heaven, and you know, saying all the right stuff. And you know, then I kind of look at dad and I say, you know, is it okay? Like, you know, she everything she's saying, like, you know, is it's okay, we're gonna pray for her to respond to ask Christ into her heart. And he kind of looks at me, he's like, Well, wait a second. He's like, I've been listening to you all season long and all these devotions and all the things about Jesus. He's like, I would really make like to make a decision to follow Jesus as well. Can I pray with my daughter? And that was like one of the most touching moments in my entire experience with upward being able to pray, you know, with this big, rough and gruff, you know, dirty from the factory guy, and get down on his knees with his daughter and see both of them accept Christ and eventually get baptized together. And uh, it was just an amazing moment and you know, one of the highlights of like my time in ministry and evangelism. And uh, as time went on, uh, I'm still very involved in Upward. So now I get to partner with other Upward programs and I get to travel around and uh, you know, I do some comedy, I do some illusions, I put on a little fun show for them. And you know, in the midst of that show, I'm able to present the gospel. And uh so I'm gonna show you a little clip. If you're listening on a podcast, you'll be able to hear. Um, but this is kind of the little visual picture that I do and the words that I use using the story of Jesus and the two thieves on the cross. So check this out. Uh but before we get to that, I have a quick story to share with you just to kind of wrap up a lot of what you've been learning all season long. So I know you all learned a bunch of verses, a bunch of virtues this year. So I used to be an upward director myself. I programmed with about 750 kids. And I've been a coach, I've been a referee, I've been a commissioner, I've been a director, I've a cleanup crew, prayer team, and I've done pretty much every job that we do with upwards. And I've just loved what it stands for, promoting the discovery of Jesus through sports. And in the Bible, it tells us that God demonstrated his love for us in this. Christ died for us. So this is a representation of Jesus when he died on the cross. A bit about the Luke. When you read the story of when Jesus died on the cross because of how much he loved us, it tells us that Jesus wasn't by himself. It tells us that there were also two criminals that day. One on each side of Jesus, they were also dying on the cross because of the bad things that they had done. And usually the color red represents sin. The Bible tells us that Jesus took on the sin of the world and all the bad things that we do. But if we back up with the story, it also says Jesus, he would have it says he who knew no sin became sin for us. So we could become the righteousness of God. And because Jesus never sinned, it shouldn't actually be red. Because Jesus looked the life that was white as snow. And as Jesus came on the cross and was living that sinless life, that perfect life, the two criminals beside him, the book of Lucas says, if they made fun of him, and they started telling him, if you're really the Son of God, follow the angels to get you God from the cross. But he wasn't going to do that because he was God for us and he loved us that much. But at some point in the story that doesn't tell us when or why, but one of the criminals beside Jesus looked over at him and somehow. He recognized him for who he was. And he knew he was the Messiah of the world, he knew he was the savior, he knew that he was his only hope to ever get to heaven. So that criminal looked over at Jesus as it hung across and said, He knew, we're all gonna have to die. And I knew that you're gonna go to paradise, you get to go to heaven, and when you get there, I'd really like to go. So he said to Jesus, remember people you come in your kingdom. And Jesus could have looked back at him and said, you know what? The George River's too far away, I can't baptize you. And if you don't get baptized, I can't change you. You know, he also didn't look at him and say, you know what, you didn't give enough money to charity to go to the church. Actually, not only did you not give enough money, you actually stole money. And because of that, there's nothing I can do for you. He also didn't say what I believed when I was growing up. You know what? You have to do more good things and bad things to get into heaven. And as a criminal, you did wait for bad things, and because you did more bad than good, I can't let you into heaven. And uh You know, the book of Ephesians tells us that it's by grace that we're saying, and it's not for our works. And uh, when this guy recognized Jesus and said, Lord, when you come into your kingdom, please remember me. Jesus looked right back at this guy immediately. He said, Today. Today you're gonna be with me for eternity in heaven. And uh, you know, just like this happened 2,000 years ago, we all have a decision, as we've been hearing the devotions and all the different verses, that we have a decision of what we're gonna do with Jesus in his death. If we die on a cross just for us. And uh, you know, hopefully we'll make a decision like this man recognize him for who he is and ask him to come into our hearts and start a relationship with him. It's something when I die, that's saying, Mike, watch that I can do heaven. I'm not gonna say because I was an upward director, I tried to be a good husband and father, because I wasn't perfect, and heaven's a perfect place, and I don't deserve to go there. I'm gonna say, you know, when I was 17 years old, I heard the same story. And I made the decision to ask Jesus to come into my life, and I followed him, and I did my best, and uh, but it's not because I did my best, it's all because of what Jesus did on the cross for me. And I know you've all heard at the end of the season, John 3.16. And I'd love to break it down this way. It says, for God, he's the greatest being in all of history, so loved the world, that's the greatest news in all of history. That he said, that's the greatest surprise in history, his one and only son, the greatest gift in history. But whoever believes in him is the greatest opportunity in history. Shall not Paris is the greatest promise in history, but have eternal love. That's the greatest possession that we can all have. And uh, you know, I know you've been hearing these verses, you've been hearing this story all season long, but I want to give you one opportunity to make a decision. You know, just like I did when I was 17 and start to follow Jesus. Alright, so I'm gonna say a quick prayer. There's nothing magical about this prayer, but if you've been learning about this this season, or maybe it's making sense for the first time right now, that you have an opportunity to say, you know, I do want to follow Jesus. So if you could all bow your heads and please. And the Bible tells us that God knows our thoughts, so you didn't have to say this out loud. But if you want to start a relationship with Jesus, just say, Dear Jesus, thank you that you love me so much, that you died on the cross just for me. And I pray that today you would come into my heart, forgive me of my sins, and help me start a relationship with you. It's in Jesus' name I pray. Amen. Alright, so if you've prayed that sometime this season, or maybe even today for the first time, well, you know, great. Just look over your coach and kind of give your coach a wave so they know that you've learned a lot from these devotions and you wanted to start a relationship with Jesus. And coaches, you can share that with upward leadership. Kids, I would love for you to share that with your parents, grandparents, whoever you live with. And parents, if if your child has been talking about this, if you have a church pastor, you already have a church home, celebrate that with your pastor. If you don't have a church home, I'm sure they would love to have you get connected here and help your child and family grow in that faith as well. And then from there, um, you know, like I said, I I get to travel around. Uh so this past season, I'm trying to think we traveled to Kentucky, uh, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Virginia. Um, so just get to go to these programs and get to tell people how much Jesus loves them. And thinking all the way back to when I was a new Christian and thinking that I had to randomly go door to door and that I could never do evangelism just isn't true. And uh, you know, I now like through this upward program and not just the upward program, but being able to be invited to speak at churches and be able to share the gospel and do outreach shows. Like I'm well over a hundred thousand people now that I've been able to just tell them how much God loves them and that he wants that relationship with him. And you know, it's so satisfying, you know, in these upward celebrations. And, you know, now, you know, I want to make sure the kids understand the decision they're making. So if they're sitting with their teams, I'll tell the kids like, hey, you know, if you made the decision to follow Jesus, like give a wave at your coach, or give a wave uh if they're sitting with their parents to your parent, or you know, adults, if you made a decision, you know, from my story tonight, or from sometime this season, maybe you heard something like at the games at halftime, somebody comes and gives some kind of gospel presentation every game. And and one of the highlights of those shows and those moments is to see all you know all these hands and all these kids waving at their coaches, at their parents, or you know, even sometimes in the back, some adults looking at me and kind of giving me a little wave, and you know, knowing how many people someday, you know, I'm gonna get to see in heaven that there'll be, you know, all because of like me having the privilege of sharing that story with them. So just a little bit of encouragement for you, you know, if you don't have that gift of being confrontational and you're not gonna be the street preacher, you know, when I do these upward events, I make sure I go to the everybody, you know, the the graphics team that just advertised the event to get to people in the room, you know, the secretaries that like organized all the details and uh, you know, making sure the facility was open, making sure the volunteers were there, um, you know, all the coaches that, you know, without them and the referees, there is no program. And knowing that, you know, when I see 50 hands in an event that of kids and adults that have decided to follow Jesus and letting them know, just like Dorcas, just like Matthew, just like all these others, that although they may have not have been the one on the stage giving the message, they had just as much of a part because they put the people in the seats and you know, they did e even the prayer team. Like I I remember like my first season as a director, uh I went to a lot of our older small groups and just ask them to pray. And I gave them specific names, I gave them specific teams. And that first season, I didn't make any other changes. We went from 12 first time decisions to follow Christ the season before to 86. And the only thing we did was ask some of our older generation to pray for these names and what a difference it made. And you know, so all that to say, like whatever your gift is. Like you can use that gift uh to be able to get into evangelism, make a difference for his kingdom, and you know, someday knowing that you know God's gonna look at us and say, Well done, my good and faithful servant. And you know, all of us, if we use our gifts, you know, people just thanking us in heaven, like you know, thank you for donating your time to organize that event, or thank you for inviting that speaker, or you know, thank you for putting on this program. And even though you aren't the one that presented the gospel, like if it wasn't for you, that would moment would have never happened. So I appreciate you like tuning in today and you know, just hearing some of my thoughts and uh you know, my prayers for you is that you use those gifts, and uh, you know, we need to build up God's kingdom, and uh, you know, the the time is now. You know, uh we always say as a professional counselor, you know, you need to get to a point in your life to change where you say, you know what, I gotta change. Uh, and you know, I need to change, and I need to change now. And it's the same way, you know, when we look at the kingdom of God, like we need to lead people into the kingdom and we need to do it now. And, you know, whatever gift God's given you, you know, use that in the process. And uh, you know, just knowing that God's given us a gift for a reason, and when we all put those pieces together, you know, as scripture and Paul talks about, you know, we're the body of Christ and we all have a different function. And when we all bring that together, it can be a beautiful thing. So go and make disciples of all the nations, and uh just as God calls us to in uh Matthew chapter 28. So blessings to you.
