SPEAKER_02

Welcome back to Whispers in the Woods, guys. Your last resort for horror news, reviews, and sometimes interviews. I'm your host, Emily. I'm Devin.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm Tom. Guys, best episode ever this week. Well, of course. Because we're talking about backrooms. Sweet! Oh yeah. Exactly. But before that, we're gonna get into some horror news. Does that sound okay for everybody?

SPEAKER_02

Let's do it.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Um, I'm gonna start on a sad note, unfortunately, actually, though. Mm-hmm. Um, the actor Anthony Stewart Head has passed away at the age of 72. You guys might know him as Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yeah, so this is very sad news. Um, so he died uh due to complications from pneumonia. And uh I have a quote here from Sarah Michelle Geller. She says, Tell Giles I figured it out and I'm okay. Well, I don't have it figured out and I'm not okay, but I know I'm lucky, I'm the lucky one because I knew you. That's a sweet. Very sweet quote from her. Do you know how? I was very sad to hear this. Only 72.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So not even all that old, unfortunately. Yeah. But I know he made a big impact on me, you know, in middle school when I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He had a really nice calming presence on that show. So yeah, he will be missed. Uh, and then, in a very, very different tone, we can talk about the ice cream man trailer.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, let's talk about the ice cream man trailer.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so this is Eli Roth's remake of the Clint Howard classic Ice Cream Man, which doesn't seem to share a lot of DNA aside from there being an ice cream man, a truck, and the name of the movie.

SPEAKER_02

No, like I said when I was watching the trailer, I do feel like it will be a film that I will watch for the kills.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_02

And then the rest of the movie will kind of just be there.

SPEAKER_04

It's too gory for me. I don't do well with that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, a lot of like different ways to kill a person in that trailer. Totally.

SPEAKER_00

I've seen the Green Inferno, so I think my bar for Eli Roth Gore is pretty high.

SPEAKER_02

He made hostile, yes. He made hostile and yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Which I loved the first hostile. I love Green Inferno as cheesy as it is. Um I mean it's kind of a ripoff of what do you call it?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, Cannibal Holocaust. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yes, yes, which I haven't seen either.

SPEAKER_02

But bad movies.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I think that hopefully I the kids are having a fun time. Yeah. They these must just be, you know, like chill kids who are fine acting as if they're scooping out a guy's brain with an ice cream scooper.

SPEAKER_02

You know, like hopefully they made it like a yummy flavored jello.

SPEAKER_00

Or you just hope that it was a fun set, you know, that everybody was fine at the end of the day.

SPEAKER_02

I'm sure they were.

SPEAKER_00

And also we had some A Quiet Place 3 set photos dropped, and you'll love this because Killian Murphy's in there. Yay! And Jack O'Connell. So sharing the screen. Yes. Um, in these shots, they're like running down a street, and then there's uh earlier, it looks like a flashback because we have Jack O'Connell who is like um what is he? He he's a soldier, you know, and uh he's with Alex Wolf, who played Ruben in a Quiet Place day one. So I guess it's gonna flash back to, you know, and also wasn't Alex Wolf an hereditary?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He's looking good with a beard these days. I don't know if you guys have seen it. I really do. Dude's like he's grown up as well, too.

SPEAKER_04

Do you remember him in the Naked Brothers band? Did you guys watch that show?

SPEAKER_00

No, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And his brother was in it too. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it was like a kid's show, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Cool. He's on Nickelodeon. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Haven't seen that. Alright.

SPEAKER_02

But he's a good actor, though. Yeah, yeah, he's a great actor.

SPEAKER_00

Well, are you guys looking forward to this movie, like knowing who's in it? Are you still interested in this franchise?

SPEAKER_02

I won't I'll I'll say that I wasn't like the hugest fan of the first two. Like the first one was cool. Didn't really care so much for the second one or the prequel, but I'm gonna watch the third one because you know Killian. Killian's in it, so Connell, so it's kind of a must-walk. The fourth guest.

SPEAKER_00

I hope it sticks the landing. Oh yeah, my cat is back and he's checking us out.

SPEAKER_04

He was sitting there. I was trying to keep a straight face. He was just sitting there. Looks like he wanted to contribute to the pod.

SPEAKER_00

Do you like horror movies, Mickey? Oh, no, apparently not. He's backed out. Um, okay, also Grave Encounters 3. You guys hear about this?

SPEAKER_02

What?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, not at all. Okay, so this is Double What? This is actually more of a reboot, so I've heard. Uh so Variety reports that it is starring Justin Long.

SPEAKER_03

Oh!

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And it's produced by Justin Long and his wife, Kate Bosworth. And then the Vicious Brothers are developing it.

SPEAKER_02

That's very cool.

SPEAKER_04

Is it still a Canadian movie or no?

SPEAKER_00

You'd hope so if it's the Vicious Brothers.

SPEAKER_02

So no Lance Preston?

SPEAKER_00

Lance Preston, maybe not. Unless Long could be playing a new version of Lance Preston. I don't know.

SPEAKER_04

I wonder if you can just film in just same place.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, that could be, right? Back in the same way.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe Emily can have the role in the movie.

SPEAKER_00

The original producer Sean Angelski is also on board. So it seems like they're just re-teaming the people who didn't.

SPEAKER_02

Didn't I tell you guys that I heard Sean Angelski talk at like a Vancouver horror show producer movie? That's sweet. Yeah, I think you had mentioned that before. He was a really cool guy.

SPEAKER_04

I'm excited for this movie because I really like the first and second ones. Uh-huh. Thank you for showing us.

SPEAKER_02

The second one was good too. It was clever.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, cool. I I need to check that one out.

SPEAKER_02

Don't ruin the freaking series, Justin Long.

SPEAKER_00

I bet he won't. I trust Justin Long. He's a great horror.

SPEAKER_02

I just gotta say that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, so this is gonna be filming next year.

SPEAKER_04

Cool. Hopefully, just a couple towns over. Hopefully.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I hope it's in it still Canadian. That would be great.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and still same location.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Two more pieces. Uh, and this is about Damian Leone's next movie.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. Yes, I've got this.

SPEAKER_00

Tortures of the Damned. Which I love this. Have no like story details on, but it's got a pretty cool logo.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Some sort of like a red demon silhouette. The title card looks pretty cool. And uh this is actually gonna be produced by Sam Raimi and Robert Tappert. So these are the Evil Dead boys. Yes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I'm wondering if David Howard Dorton's gonna be in it. Oh, I hope so. I'm sure.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's it's pretty much a sure thing at this point. And also, this has been acquired by Lionsgate. So nice. We're putting it up.

SPEAKER_02

Big movie.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

This will be his film after Terrifier 4.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, of course.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_04

Um I guess I know what to expect. Exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. My last piece of news, you guys, concerns a little movie called Obsession.

SPEAKER_02

We still haven't seen it yet.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Devin and I have seen it and loved it. So we can talk about like the, you know, our thoughts maybe in Who What Watch Read Went Wander. Yeah, lately. Um, but I just have some news about its box office and its budget and you know, its impact that it's having right now. Um, this movie's actually making history for having growth over weekend to weekend. That does not happen. Like movies peak in their first weekend.

SPEAKER_02

Backrooms.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Horror is being crazy this month. Yeah, yeah. And and you know, breaking convention. Because usually it's people go out to see it in the first weekend, and then you know, whoever's left over goes to see it in the next weekend. Yeah. This movie's building through like word of mouth and whatnot. And it was on a $750,000 budget, and it has made one uh it's made $166.6 million as of June 5th.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah, I l today, just today, I literally had three different people at work be like, Oh, have you seen Obsession? Like I just saw it, like whatever, a couple days ago. It's so good, you gotta watch it. Like three different people in one day.

SPEAKER_00

Everybody's talking about it. Uh, and another bit of news I had is that uh Forbes is reporting that NBCU has removed obsession from its digital release date.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I saw that. June 2nd to keep showing it in the theaters.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, keep it in theaters, you know?

SPEAKER_02

It's doing like never happens, so that's lovely.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, pretty cool, huh?

SPEAKER_02

Lovely, Jovely.

SPEAKER_00

And that is all my horror news.

SPEAKER_02

Really? Well, speaking of big box office movies, back rooms. Yeah. Oh yes, of course. Um I mean the film, as you'll later say, but was just made with 10 million, as I say, just but you know comparatively small. Yeah, yeah, right. Um, and it just had the highest grossing opening weekend for an original horror movie in history.

SPEAKER_00

That's incredible. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_02

It is making history brilliant, yeah. Also, Kane Parsons is the youngest director ever to have a number one movie at the box office. Good for him.

SPEAKER_00

Man, yeah. No, again, we we we can't lie. Little jealous, yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_02

Jealous, but not also happy. No, very inspiring, yeah, very cool. Totally love to see it, but you know. Yes, yeah, I know we know. Um, and then did you guys see uh Marc Duplas defending in person?

SPEAKER_04

I know that made me really happy because people online. Here's the thing, folks, when you see something online, remember anyone could make up anything, anything, you know. So don't just look at a headline on Instagram, be like, I read an article, or I heard this thing, it's like no, no, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_02

And then, you know, people that I mean are jealous. We were just talking about envy, you know. People believe this and then spread it more. Exactly. But yeah, Marc Dupless was defending him.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I really like that video.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so people were saying that Kane Parsons didn't actually direct backrooms. And obviously not true.

SPEAKER_02

No, but it sounds like something that people would like to believe.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, they're like he needed an older person there who was actually directing and he was just saying what it should have, and that's not true.

SPEAKER_02

Not at all. As yeah, Mark Duplasse made like a video that he posted online of him talking about his experience on set with Kane Parsons as the director, and he was kind of saying that, like, you know, normally he helps like younger people in the industry kind of, you know, get where they want to be and things like that as kind of a mentor. But he said Kane Parsons did not need that. He knew what he was doing, he was very professional. Um, and he was went as far as to say like he uh did like maybe better than people three times his age.

SPEAKER_00

That's like I think that it's all about having like that consistent vision. And if he's been doing it since he's 16, obviously he's going to know what he's talking about and what he wants out of the movie.

SPEAKER_02

Well, he's been building this universe for the past like his entire teenage years. Seven years. So he's inside and out. Mark Duflash, uh, funny, like he ended the video in kind of like a cunty way. He was like, um, also, like, were you there? Yeah, I know I saw that. I loved that. Oh, that's amazing. Yeah. I have 700. What a segue. Thank you guys. What is Devin?

SPEAKER_00

Guys, I'm gonna put my thinking cap about this one and just really like ponder it for a minute or two. Well, let's see.

SPEAKER_04

Scratching my. I believe today's June 5th, and oh, that's so quirky. It means to be a little bit more.

SPEAKER_00

Why has that date been mentioned to me every day for the past six months?

SPEAKER_04

Oh, June 7th could be June 7th. Well, folks, the Vampire Lestat remains 6 p.m. Western time, and uh, like Western Canada, and then 9 p.m. Eastern Canada time. The Vampire Lestot season three, yes, it's technically interview with the vampire season three, but this time rebranded the Vampire Lestat. So, fun facts, guys. Uh, they actually did something very cool. For those who are unaware, Lestat is a vampire. He's a musician, loves music, music, music, and in the second book, he decides to become a rock star to tell his truth because he is a drama. And I do not want to spoil anything, it's crazy. But um, what AMC uh plus, I guess it would be AMC Plus, ended up doing is they did a one-day concert in New York City on June 2nd. And you could not buy tickets to this concert. It was all a lottery. You had to write in as to why you should attend and why you want to attend. And yeah, people have seen some of the first few episodes and they say it's amazing. And I'm just so excited to see how they're gonna interpret it. And the music's fantastic, and I've been listening to the music and analyzing it, and having read the book, I'm like, oh.

SPEAKER_02

Did you write you didn't write a letter, right?

SPEAKER_04

No, I didn't.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I wasn't gonna pay to fly. I still thought you should have, just for fun, but yeah, but I didn't. So yeah, I'm very excited and expect weekly updates of my Who Ruby Ren Wow.

SPEAKER_00

Great.

SPEAKER_02

Tom, I see you looking at the time, but there's one more thing that I feel like we gotta throw in there.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, what's the news?

SPEAKER_02

The new insidious?

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

There's another one. The furthest. They're not done.

SPEAKER_00

What are we at six? Six. It is six. That's crazy. I remember the last one as being the last key. Or the lost key.

SPEAKER_02

The red door. What? Four is the key one. Oh my god.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, the last key is the last one I was aware of.

SPEAKER_02

And that was supposed to be the last one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, makes sense.

SPEAKER_02

Um, but they just keep pumping them out. Um and this one is set to be released in theaters on August 21st.

SPEAKER_00

What do you guys think of the trailer?

SPEAKER_02

Pooh poo.

SPEAKER_04

Well, you know, I remember seeing it first, and my first comment was the further.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

The furthest further too further.

SPEAKER_00

They're stretching it as far as it will go, I guess. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

They will go even further than the further to infinity to further.

SPEAKER_00

I'm okay with it. It it's it's cool. I think that the double rows of teeth jump scare is good. That's fine.

SPEAKER_02

You said that they hate old people?

SPEAKER_00

I think they do hate old people. I think that like a lot of the scares are just like, look at that old person. How old are they?

SPEAKER_02

Wait, who is that?

SPEAKER_00

You know, there's like that group of old people on the street just smiling and staring at them, and then the old man is well, too. The filmmakers.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

You know, like it just kind of seems to me where it's James Wan? Could be James Wan, but I feel like he's not involved at this stage, right?

SPEAKER_02

I think it's still said. It's still on, huh? He's a producer.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I bet he's like at least somewhat involved. But yeah, I don't know. Just feels a little mean-spirited to me.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe it's the fear of aging.

SPEAKER_00

Should we talk about backrooms?

SPEAKER_04

We were hoping you would have a segue.

SPEAKER_02

I'll talk about your back room.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, there we go. Backrooms, as we mentioned, was directed by Kane Parsons. Uh, 20-year-old Kane Parsons.

SPEAKER_03

What a lucky talented boy.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, and the uh the list of producers, big names here. Big names, big big names. We got James Wan, we got Sean Levy, and we got Osgood Perkins.

SPEAKER_04

Look at that. Pretty crazy, huh? We also have like Chris Ferguson. There's a bunch of producers on it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, there was a few more, and there's a few more. Those were just like the big names. So good mentors for young Kane Parsons.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Uh so it's starring Chuitzel Ejafor, Renata Rhinesby, Mark DuPlace, Lukita Maxwell and Bennett, and I'll come back to this, but Robert Brobro Skitski?

SPEAKER_04

May I say?

SPEAKER_00

You're better at this than I am. And don't say who he's playing yet, because that's technically a spoiler, but we'll have to circle back.

SPEAKER_04

Robert Brodroski.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, there we go. He's in that too. Uh, and I'm a big fan of his work.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I know he's great. I did see me when people are like, when this guy's in the movie, I'm like.

SPEAKER_00

You know it's gonna be good, yeah. Um, so we're gonna do a non-spoiler.

SPEAKER_04

I didn't miss review.

SPEAKER_00

You didn't miss it.

SPEAKER_04

You'll know who he was. You'll know if you want to spoil it. Okay, okay, okay.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, and then there is also a surprise Canadian icon in this movie as well, too, which we'll totally talk about.

SPEAKER_04

The second time, yes. Emily can spot her true love. I'm gonna be able to do it. I know a beautiful woman when I see one.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, uh, so we'll just do a non-spoiler review first, and then we'll get into the spoilers because it's still relatively new. Um, yeah, and I do have some budget information. Or did you already mention the budget information?

SPEAKER_02

A little bit, yes.

SPEAKER_00

Covered, I guess. You did. Uh did you mention that it's made 146.2 million as of today, June 5th?

SPEAKER_02

I didn't mention that, but in its first weekend, it made 81.4 million in the span of three days. Fantastic stuff.

SPEAKER_04

A lot of previews. It already made its budget back in previews. Fantastic. Just in previews. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Okay. Crazy. Yeah. So this is a uh adaptation of uh famous internet copy pasta originated in 4chan in 2014. Yeah, creepy pasta. Uh copy pasta. Not creepy? No, slightly different. Copy pasta. Um, so yeah, uh just you know, revolving around endless labyrinthine spaces that are, you know, liminal spaces.

SPEAKER_04

Sorry, what year did you say it originally?

SPEAKER_00

2014. That was the post on 4chan. You guys can look it up if you'd like to know a little more about it.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh and uh yeah, Kane Pixels, as he was called, went and, you know, made short films in Blender. And now he's here doing uh a A24 distributed big-ish budget adaptation. And what did we think about it, you guys?

SPEAKER_02

I liked it. I liked it a lot.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm of the same mind for sure, too.

SPEAKER_02

Again, I'll say like I d I don't know if it was like my favorite movie of the year, but it being like his first feature film, it was very impressive.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, and I was thoroughly entertained.

SPEAKER_00

Like I was saying earlier, it just obviously has a really strong creative vision behind it. Like he was coming in knowing exactly what he wanted everything to be and I mean it was basically seven years of pre-production.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So the real star is obviously the back rooms, but what did we think of the story and the characters and the arcs that are going on here?

SPEAKER_02

Really liked it. I really what is her sorry Renate?

SPEAKER_00

So Renata Rhines V is playing with Mary, who's a therapist. Yeah. Then we've also got Clark, the owner of Captain Clark's Ottoman Empire, discount furniture warehouse not doing well. So we see 1990.

SPEAKER_02

I do have to say I really like the setting. I don't think I think it's very original. I don't think that there are a lot of horror movies set in um furniture warehouses. Yeah, no, definitely not.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and it was a good way to uh keep it true to the original backrooms image, which was of that, you know, disused apartment store. So it makes sense that that's where we we come into the story.

SPEAKER_04

That became a racetrack for the miniature cars. Yeah, how cute. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um and uh Clark, he is, you know, not very happy in his life, it seems. His power bill is incredibly high. Yeah. Something is drawing a lot of power in his store. Uh he's seeing a therapist as well because he's, I guess, trying to better himself.

SPEAKER_02

And I really like the way that they kind of let you into his backstory.

SPEAKER_00

Very clever.

SPEAKER_02

They did a really good job of that. Very clever.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, from his very first interaction with Mary, you know, we learned so very much about him. And Mary as well, too.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they both have their issues.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, definitely. Yeah. Uh, and uh then one day Clark finds the uh the portal into the backrooms in the basement of uh his furniture store, eventually, you know, just premise-wise speeding up goes missing, which leads, you know, his therapist to track him down and enter the backrooms herself. So that's just like basic plot, you know. Like I think that what I really appreciated is that it is this massive idea, you know, like there's so many things that you can do in this world, but it's a pretty simple human story.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. And I think that it needs to be because the backrooms is kind of the main character. Exactly. If they had too much other things going on, it would take away from that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I'm sure that some viewers out there would be like a little upset if they're big fans of the copy pasta, a big fan of like Kane's series, they would be expecting, you know, like all of the lore, big answers, like the anything that they saw in those shorts. But I think that this did a great job as an introduction to this world.

SPEAKER_02

For sure. How did you guys feel about the way they wrapped up the film?

SPEAKER_00

I'm happy with it, you know. Like I am certain that we're gonna see sequels. Yeah, for example. Like, without a doubt.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, just how much money they made they were gonna make.

SPEAKER_00

What about you, Dev?

SPEAKER_04

I liked the ending. I can't. Say too much about it before we get into the spoilers zone because it really if it is like what the overarching message is, it's a perfect representation of it. Yeah. Without a doubt. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, yeah, as far as the ending for me, I did feel like they didn't give you too much, but they didn't leave you with too little either. Yeah. I liked it.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And song is perfect. The soundtrack. Oh yes.

SPEAKER_00

So Dev, you had something you were gonna tell us about this.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, so this is not spoiling. So the song, when watching the movie, I was like, hmm, this music and stuff is kind of reminding me of something. And Kane Parsons made most of the original soundtrack with another person. The two of them worked on it. Oh, I didn't know that. Yeah, so I'm like, that's really, really cool.

SPEAKER_02

He was a composer?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, one of the composers with it. And like you know, with all of the Luminal Space videos and like, oh, Christmas time in 2003 in elementary school, and it's all like Yeah, those things. You know what I'm talking about. Yeah. So yeah, it was kind of like that, but then I was like, ooh, this is reminding me of something else.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, there was like a little spark of familiarity there.

SPEAKER_04

Then another the like final credit song, I was like, okay, what does this remind me of? Because I'm like, I'm grooving, I'm jiving to this. It was reminding me of Sinister, particularly the song gyroscopic or gyroscopic, however you pronounce it, which is by Boards of Canada. Which it should probably be realistically. So but um, so yeah, I was like, oh, it's reminding me of the Boards of Canada songs from Sinister, and it was Boards of Canada. Yeah, yeah. So I'm like very cool, which I think is perfect because their song gyroscopic. It's like, you know, the circles and continuous, continuous. Oh yes.

SPEAKER_00

And this one something very cerebral about that.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, I believe this one is something about flesh, is what the song is called at that, which makes sense.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, Sinister had one of the most disturbing soundtracks I've ever heard.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so that's why I was like, this is kind of reminding me of that, and I love Sinister, and I love that soundtrack.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and there's another Canada connection there because this is a very Canadian movie.

SPEAKER_04

I do think Boards of Canada are from Michigan, though.

SPEAKER_00

They just are weirdly named Boards of Canada. Alright, moving past that. It was filmed in Vancouver, which we like. Um it was filmed in Coquitlam for exteriors, um, studios in Vancouver. A lot of the crew was Canadian. I know that when we went on opening day and they said, hey, who here worked on the movie? Oh, it's a huge cheer. Yeah, so that's very fun. Yeah. I really enjoy the directing here. I think that the shots are so intentional. Um, there's some great framing. Uh, this I don't mention because it's not quite a spoiler, but did you guys notice the fun thing that he does with the stop sign inside the backrooms? Uh yes, so there is a reversed stop sign. Yeah. And a few times we see it and it's framed so that the vertical line of the hexagon is perfectly aligned with the space between the top of a door and the ceiling. So it's just little details like that where you can tell that it's, you know, intentional framing.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

It's well done, you know. It's a really strong effort.

SPEAKER_04

I liked it a lot.

SPEAKER_00

Mm-hmm. I'd like to mention, uh, or at least open the conversation to performances. How did you guys feel about the acting in this movie? Brilliant!

SPEAKER_02

I mean, the two main actors who were main clerks in the therapist were it's not a lot of actors.

SPEAKER_00

No, tiny little cast.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Everybody brings something unique and incredible to the table.

SPEAKER_02

The two like young, like clerks, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, Cat and um I can't remember his name.

SPEAKER_02

That guy that looks like that guy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Bobby. Bobby. Bobby.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I I did think they were like, you know, they were cute. They were like a little cringy at times, but I do think that they were supposed to be like They're teens. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

The star of the show is the star of the show, which would be Chew with L E Jafor. Yes. And he's incredible in this movie. He's very I'm so happy to see him get a starring role because everything I've seen him in, he's incredible in. Really well. And he does a great job of playing a character who's hiding a lot under the surface.

SPEAKER_02

He's very convincing. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Like uh I mean how hard must it be to play a character who is so reserved, just holding in everything. So you have to play your outside facade while also, you know, like projecting that you have a deep-seated anger, you know, dissatisfaction with your life.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I definitely feel like he dug into some personal trauma role. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Renata Rhinesby is also fantastic in this. Yeah. She's she's doing a similar thing where she's this character who has this very like calm, kind of flat facade, but you can tell there's just something going on underneath, you know. There's something that she buries down, tries to stay professional. Yeah. And then just like Clark, those layers are stripped away as the story goes.

SPEAKER_04

And that's just kind of like adulthood, you know? The older you get, the less you are outward with your personal stuff because people like that. You have to keep being professional. So a lot of people do end up just buttoning and buttoning.

SPEAKER_02

I did feel like Clark was like pretty vulnerable from the beginning and obviously to the end. But um the therapist. Mary, yeah. I felt like she was a very like she was very strong right at the beginning. And I mean she was till the end, but she became very vulnerable vulnerable. Yeah, totally.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. She had to bear, bear some things for sure. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

It's like sometimes I'm like, I have a therapist. Does my therapist have a therapist? Is my therapist?

SPEAKER_03

Is she okay?

SPEAKER_00

I saw one thing that I noticed is that this movie has a lot of scenes where it's two of these these actors, uh, Renata Rheins V and Chuatel Ijafor, just speaking to each other. And I think that it was such a smart move by the writer of this movie, who's not Kane Parsons, by the way.

SPEAKER_04

I thought that he covered it with him.

SPEAKER_00

He didn't, no, no. No. Uh to just have these, you know, interactions between these two amazing actors to give a first-time director like a a limited, you know, setting to do his best work totally. To not like overwhelm him, but to give him these amazing actors who know their stuff and to come up with something collaboratively, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well, I mean, and I kind of feel that like on a s obviously a much smaller scale, but on a personal level, just from like shooting my own short film, I had a scene with like four actors in one shot, and it was like that's a lot, right? Like, yeah, you gotta be over here, here, here, and here talking to four different people about what's going on in this scene. Right, right. Um, so yeah. But that the writing I agree was very smart in that in that way.

SPEAKER_00

Um just last things I wanted to mention before we get into some spoilers. Uh, what do we think of say the practical effect?

SPEAKER_02

Very good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, I do think that it was more like visual effect than practical, but from what I saw practically, it was yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, these sets that they've made are incredible. Yes, yes. Yeah, it's they took like a fantasy world and made you believe it was real, so I was wanting to bring up the makeup though, because we do have some very interesting makeup looks on some characters that we can't quite speak to just yet. Uh, but to be honest, that is kind of a ding against this movie for me.

SPEAKER_03

Oh.

SPEAKER_00

Some of the practical makeup appliances did not quite look convincing to me.

SPEAKER_02

Well, we'll get into it.

SPEAKER_00

We'll get into it. Maybe it's intentional as well, but that's just kind of a detractor that I have. Okay, well, let's get into it.

SPEAKER_02

Let's get into it.

SPEAKER_00

Let's do some spoilers then. It's spoilerific time, you know?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Go watch the movie if you haven't seen it yet.

SPEAKER_00

We usually like to give the review first, like the star rating, right?

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Before we get into that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna give it eight out of ten.

SPEAKER_02

I'm also gonna give it an eight.

SPEAKER_00

There you go.

SPEAKER_02

Okay with eight. I'm gonna give it a ten. Well, there you go. All right. Nice.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Averaging out somewhere around a nine here, there. That's fun.

SPEAKER_04

Very good, very good movie.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, starting at the beginning, huh?

SPEAKER_04

In the beginning, there was Abraham.

SPEAKER_00

In the beginning, there was a dude in a hazmat suit running around the backrooms in first person.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, it was very backroom short films.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yes, yes. I loved that. Just dropping us right into the backrooms for this cold open. Yeah. You're like, I know this guy's not making it out. And uh that I know that there's gonna be a scare coming up as well, too. So it was fun to just kind of like disorient me right off the bat.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think it would have been as effective if they had started it off with like one of the characters or like somewhere else.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, in their like normal day-to-day life. No, no. I think they needed to drop us right into the backrooms as if we just no clipped in and we have no clue what's going on, but we know that we're not alone in the backrooms, which is what this async employee seems to know. Because he is terrified. Oh, yeah, yeah, gets on a mic.

SPEAKER_04

He's like, They left me in here, and he's like in a music store.

SPEAKER_02

And then he just says there's something in here with something.

SPEAKER_00

Something in there, yeah. Um, and I I like like watching this a second time, just noticing that he's in the area that's at least in the vicinity of Captain Clark's because he sees a banner from Captain Clark's. Yeah, no credit. And uh, I know we're in the spoilers, but I'd like to hold out the you know the mystery for a little bit longer that there isn't in an entity with him in there that definitely relates to the Captain Clark's store.

SPEAKER_02

Spoiler, there's many.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, a particularly malevolent entity.

SPEAKER_02

He liked him though. Oh, I liked him.

SPEAKER_00

So when you're in, you know, like the vicinity of Captain Clark's, you're in danger. Maybe some other parts of the backrooms are, you know, chiller. This one's not though.

SPEAKER_02

I don't know about that.

SPEAKER_00

You know, yeah, it could all be terrifying. There could be more, you know, monstrous entities. I don't know. Yeah. You gotta get into it, of course. Yeah. Um, so he gets got. Yeah, of course. We see him, yeah, in first person.

SPEAKER_04

And there's a seagull as well. We mustn't forget.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, the very first one.

SPEAKER_04

I think it's very important to note that a seagull is in there.

SPEAKER_00

It can release the nautical theme. What's your take on that?

SPEAKER_04

No, um, it will come a bit later with the spoilers, but once we figure out what's happening in this place, it makes sense that a seagull has flown in.

SPEAKER_02

See where he comes from. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Then we see uh Mary and Mary and her mother. So young Mary and her mother, uh, and they're putting their their hands in some wet cement.

SPEAKER_02

Right. Yeah. And then the And then there's like this weird, like I obviously it's not real, but something like hits them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. Like uh a big excavator is gonna drop a big load of rubble right on top of them and then cuts right before it hits them.

SPEAKER_02

What do you think's up with that?

SPEAKER_04

It's just like her fear, the long sphere of memories. Memories, because then we see a development sign, and it's kind of what this movie's also about. And what's happening in the real world right now is that's a house probably built in the 50s, and then this is 1990. That was her childhood home, so she's looking at it as they are ripping it down to build a tower. Yeah. And so it's all the memories, and how like our memories start to get smished together, and everything is technically always happening all at once in some theories, like time, and we're just going through it at one way.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, so we see Renata Rhinesby now older. We uh I guess at this point we don't even know that she's you know watching a younger version of herself, but see this house be torn down. Yeah. And then she sees the uh the handprints, a small handprint and a larger handprint, uh, and it's just about to be smashed. And then I think the implication later is that she stopped the workers and yeah, took the smaller handprint.

SPEAKER_02

And she has it in her office.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, has it in her office, which is then visited by Clark.

SPEAKER_02

Clark.

SPEAKER_00

Our main man Clark, Chiwa Tel E.

SPEAKER_02

Especially in 1990. Yeah. Oh, that's so true.

SPEAKER_04

You know, like we really have to remember that straight man going to see a therapist. Exactly in the 90s, considering like when we think of how mental health was discussed back then, especially for men. And it's like when we look at what most horror movies were talking about in the 90s, it's the they would call it the insane asylum and psych word and escapees. So the crazy people go to the side. Yeah, exactly. Your shrink, exactly. Shrink your issues, yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I guess he does want to change. That's where we start with him. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I think that this is such a strong scene. Yeah. Where he has his first session that we see. Yes, with Mary. Oh my god. It was so realistic. Totally. The the dialogue and just like the way that they're acting in the scene. Yeah. Feels like you're almost watching like a real session.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, yes. And uh Mary wants to do an acting exercise with Clark because uh his wife has kicked him out of his house, so he puts it many, many times. Because he pays for the house. Yes, uh, because of his drinking, so he puts it. It's his house. And it's his house.

SPEAKER_04

He pays for it, he pays for her school.

SPEAKER_00

So she wants to do this acting exercise where he's speaking to Mary as if she's his wife. And uh at first, I really love this. Clark is like, the acting thing, come on, I feel stupid. Yeah. He's so good at acting. Clark, the character, yeah, is really good at acting. What we even see later. I feel like he could have solved some of his issues if he had just, you know, had a creative outlet.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think that's what it's supposed to be, right? Like he's saying it, no, no, it's not gonna work. Like I'm gonna really at worst. Oh, yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00

He falls into it right away. Yeah, and he he loses his temper. Like as if he's speaking to his wife.

SPEAKER_02

He gets heated. He did.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, totally rivalry. Totally.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Good scene. Very strong scene. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

It's very good, and I do want to note now, um, when he is getting very, very angry in this scene, he tilts his eyes down, and it's called Sempaku. And it's only the lower third of the whites of his eyes are seen.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

And that is very important to note for later on.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Another thing that's important to note later on is that he says, you know, I I hurt people, it's just the way I'm wired.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

An ex-key you if I've ever heard one. We will hear later. So I think the next thing that's happening is the Captain Clark video.

SPEAKER_04

Which he loves acting. Yeah, exactly. He's a very good actor. He should have just gone into life.

SPEAKER_00

He's shooting this short where he's playing a pirate.

SPEAKER_02

It's like a commercial for his furniture store. The perfect 90s cheesy.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, totally.

SPEAKER_02

And we had seen this before the movie, right?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, yeah. Um, so he's shooting it, but it doesn't go well. He breaks his peglet. No, no, the chair breaks, that's it. Yeah, his cheap particle board king's chair. Again, he's like really mixing his like aesthetics there with the Ottoman Empire. He's a pirate, now he's sitting on a king's chair. Yeah. Yeah, even his employee Bobby is like, dude, get it together, like, choose a lane here.

SPEAKER_04

He's a real sultan or a pirate. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he's being filmed by Bobby, who is maybe a film student.

SPEAKER_02

Looks like a film bro a little bit. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then his girlfriend Kat is his assistant.

SPEAKER_02

So yeah, and introduces their characters.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly.

SPEAKER_04

And it's important because a lot of what Clark is saying in that ad comes to play later on in the movie because he's talking about there's a map. We see he draws a map later on, there's a sea of furniture for you to discover. Obviously, the back rooms. It's like he's gonna discover the backrooms and all these treasures. So everything he is saying in that it's kind of the plot in the movie.

SPEAKER_02

There was a lot of foreshadowing in this movie. I also feel like it's the type of movie that you could re-watch and be like, oh, this thing. Oh, I didn't notice this thing before.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, seeing it twice, there was a lot of stuff that I didn't notice.

SPEAKER_04

His wooden leg is actually like a part of a chair that he's like, yeah, that he's resting. So he had to also hack some of the furniture.

SPEAKER_02

He doesn't have too much money and he's gonna make do. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Uh, and then I think the next bit is that a power man comes by to uh to check out why his power bill does. The switches, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

That part is really cool. Yeah, I think. I like that they're we find like the random, weird, like crooked switches. The red hand. Weird question. Did those make you feel like itchy?

SPEAKER_04

Not really. They made my body uncontrollably itchy.

SPEAKER_02

Well, you knew it meant something bad.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, totally. And it's like since they weren't meant to be there, it's likely just kind of spored and bored out. Like, you know, when something's rotting and then there's like the nasty holes and maggots coming out of it, that's when it made me feel like being okay.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Side switch, which I think is also kind of important.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, besides the first opening scene, this is kind of in the reality that we're in now, the first glimpse of the back rooms.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, yeah. The power is flickering in the building, Clark's trying to figure out what's going on. Yeah. I think that from here we just kind of go into like a day in the life of both Mary and also Clark.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, just some more character introduction and like backstory.

SPEAKER_00

We learn that Clark is sleeping in his department store.

SPEAKER_02

Because he got kicked out.

SPEAKER_00

Because he's kicked out of his house. Uh, which is hilarious. Um, drinking all the time.

SPEAKER_04

When we're in the real world and outside and all of this, the sunny sky.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, it doesn't look real.

SPEAKER_04

No, it's like a matte painting, like a modern-day matte painting.

SPEAKER_02

It's like in the Hunger Games, you know, when they like shoot the arrow at the sky and it's exactly right.

SPEAKER_04

Because it's perfect, and it also does kind of look like a Disneyland Looney Tunes type painting. And there's a singular hot air balloon.

SPEAKER_00

Perfect hot air balloon. The clouds are never moving. Yeah. As well. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I loved, I loved, loved, loved that because it's giving that nice airy.

SPEAKER_02

Also, something that we noticed, I think it was right from kind of the beginning of the film, is the film itself looks very pixely. Yes, and like I thought was very interesting.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Um, so through this kind of montage, we also see some more of Mary and gather that she's maybe not a very happy person. No. You know? Yeah. Like we see her watching her own ad at night alone. We see her at a party where she's just not having it. Do you want to say who she's talking to at the party?

SPEAKER_02

Yes, of course. So you guys didn't notice this, but of course I noticed it. There is like a very short scene where she's like at a party and a woman is talking to her, and you can't really hear what this woman's saying because um Mary is just like somewhere else. She's not, you know, mentally at the party. And the woman that's talking to her is Catherine Isabel.

SPEAKER_00

It's totally Catherine Isabel, uh, star of Ginger Snaps.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Ginger Snaps.

SPEAKER_00

She's in Bones.

SPEAKER_02

She's in Bones, she's in Freddie versus Jason. Freddie vs. Jason, 13 Eerie, yeah, uh, Speak No Evil, Canadian I'm gonna be American Mary Right. That's all of your favorite. Yeah. I mean, so many great horror Canadian films.

SPEAKER_03

Yes.

SPEAKER_02

Uh, and she's beautiful, she's a sexy lady. Um, did I mention that?

SPEAKER_00

Maybe a couple times previous episodes.

SPEAKER_02

So that was a really cool cameo, and I was very excited to like catch that.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. And what I do really like is that Mary is kind of as lonely as Clark, because even at that party we see she's not listening to anybody. She's not even Catherine Isabel. Not even Catherine Isabel, and she's just kind of vacant.

SPEAKER_00

Couldn't be you.

SPEAKER_04

Couldn't be me, but you know.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly.

SPEAKER_04

I also think it is important to note we do see Mary walk through sliding doors, much like she will later walk through something else.

SPEAKER_00

You're so right. I didn't notice that that framing is so intentional there.

SPEAKER_02

And the way she enters the channel. Yeah, isn't that something that she says in her commercial? Like open the window. Open the window, allow yourself to go through the window, which comes up again later. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

When was the last time any of you guys went through a window? It feels like kind of an imperfect metaphor.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I don't know if ever.

SPEAKER_00

That might be the point, though. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_04

It's like it's not quite right. And she's watching it, like, what the hell?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, what am I doing here? Yeah. Um, I think that basically what happens next is Clark discovers the backrooms.

unknown

You know.

SPEAKER_00

Pretty much. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

The lights flicker, he's watching TV, and then all of a sudden it flickers to he sees somebody else with the furniture adds someone's rodeo country barn.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yes, which then glitches out to a view from a security camera inside the back rooms. Yeah. I thought this was so creepy. Me too. I really enjoyed that. And he's like, What is that?

SPEAKER_04

It's like a glimpse before he gets in there.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, totally.

SPEAKER_04

It's like Alice in Wonderland when she falls and she looks through the little door, but she can't quite get there yet. She has to go through a whole journey before she can get there.

SPEAKER_02

Also, I think everybody's all of the actors' reactions to the back rooms and when they're first like. Like realized it's real.

SPEAKER_00

Very distinct.

SPEAKER_02

Very good. Yes, I would be like. Nobody's was like cheesy.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, no. Totally. And uh he goes downstairs and uh, you know, why does he walk through it? Oh yes, because he sees um like kind of a slit in the in the door frame. All of the lights are off. Yeah, all of the lights are off, but he can see um through the wall and into the backrooms and he finds his way in. Just falls in, you know, falls through the wall. Boom, he's there.

SPEAKER_02

Starts going like he goes in and then he goes back out. Yeah, he's like, ah, yeah. But he does go head first, which I think is interesting.

SPEAKER_00

So I'll tell you one thing, just as a bit of like an aside for review. I found the second time watching this first sequence, um, I I kind of lost the tension, you know? Because I I think that this this sequence does build and there is technically a scare to it, but knowing that it's not a huge one kind of did just leave me like, okay, yeah, yeah, we're gonna we're seeing the backgrounds.

SPEAKER_02

Do you mean like the first time that he goes in there and does his little runaround?

SPEAKER_00

Yes, when he does his his runaround, seeing it, you know, like three days after I first saw it, I was I was just kind of like, yeah, okay, I know, I know what's happening here. But if you don't but not knowing, yeah, having my first viewing there, I was like, oh, what's the right thing?

SPEAKER_02

Because I remember it being pretty tense when he's running through and then he goes through like the little opening to get away from whatever's chasing him.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because he finds his way to uh caveman standee, which is actually from some of Kane Parsons' original uh shorts, which I didn't know. Uh, and it's it's speaking a recording. Um, do you guys know the origin of this? Because I learned that recently.

SPEAKER_01

Not totally.

SPEAKER_00

So it's speaking greetings in a bunch of different languages, and this is from the I think it's the the Challenger Shuttle, some some like uh satellite that goes out into space in in the real world, and it's 55 greetings from Earth, so in different languages. So in case we run across aliens, we're just saying hello.

SPEAKER_04

And they're gonna speak any Earth language so fast.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so um that's what is playing on these little standees, which is a lot of things.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, that's fine.

SPEAKER_00

That makes me that's really canny.

SPEAKER_04

Interesting. But yeah, as for like the tension thing, I don't know personally, I'm never really scared when I watch a horror movie the second time because I know what happens. However, I do like seeing the mystery and finding out more clues because if I already know when things are coming.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, the first time, terrifying.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. So did you also feel like it was less tension the second time you watched it?

SPEAKER_04

I feel like that about every movie. If I've already seen it, it's like it doesn't matter if it's a musical, it doesn't matter what it is, because I already know what's gonna come. For me, Midsummer will always get better. Oh, see, not for me, but it's like I will always be grossed out by the same things like that's never gonna get better, but then I like to find all the foreshadowing and all the mysteries and clues more.

SPEAKER_00

Gotcha.

SPEAKER_04

That's true.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, okay, so then uh Clark, you know, he the standee gets destroyed, he sees it through a little tunnel in the wall, uh, and he nopes out of there. Yeah, he leaves. But uh apparently he's not terrified enough to not go back every night.

SPEAKER_02

Well, I think he has also nothing else.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, nothing else to do.

SPEAKER_04

Very distinct, we totally forgot to say. Um, I'm not lonely. And she's like, No, I said you were alone.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, you know, which is okay. Yeah, so all he's got is to explore the backrooms, and then he arrives at Mary, like totally disheveled for their meeting.

SPEAKER_02

And she's just like, uh-oh, what happened?

SPEAKER_00

But he's like, Yeah, I've been in there, and here's a map, and it's totally real, and she's like, Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And he just right away can obviously tell that she doesn't believe him.

SPEAKER_00

And of course, with his temper, as soon as he realizes he's not being taken seriously, he's like, Okay, okay, I'm I'm gone. Bye.

SPEAKER_04

And I'll come back with proof. And she's like, Uh-oh. Yeah, I'm concerned for his well-being. Because he asks if I think it was like a 5150, which is like an involuntary check into the hospital. So she said only She's done it before. Yeah, only if the person really needs it, but he's not there right now. He's just kind of talking crazy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So then he has to go grab Kat and Bobby to go and investigate the back and see what they're doing. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And he needs uh him, Bobby, to document it for research, you know?

SPEAKER_02

And their house is kind of interesting.

SPEAKER_00

It is it is, it's super colorful and kind of offbeats.

SPEAKER_02

But it also looks very like I don't know how to say it. Like, not real.

SPEAKER_00

No, totally, not at all.

SPEAKER_02

And it's crazy because I think it's just on Kingsway. Yeah, yeah. It's like a real motel, but yeah, it's like very 50s. It looks almost otherworldly. Totally, totally perfect.

SPEAKER_00

Just like we were saying with all the outside locations. It all feels like, is this even the real world? Is anything the real world?

SPEAKER_04

Hmm, hopefully, you guys have seen the flint stones, but the flint stones cards. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So Kat and Bobby go into the backrooms. Do they have a good time?

SPEAKER_04

No. It's important to note too. Bobby is wearing a shirt at the beginning that says end apart.

SPEAKER_00

Uh yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Which is very important, and we see the chain broken and all of that, and it's 1990.

SPEAKER_02

They kind of immediately don't have a good time.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_02

Like they get in there and they're just like Yeah, Kat's never having a good time.

SPEAKER_00

Bobby is a little stone, so apparently he's enjoying it.

SPEAKER_02

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

I think he's having fun when they go through, right up until he has to go into the the passageway, the little slopey tunnel.

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah, they kind of go in like a kind of order. Like Clark goes in there, and then Bobby's like, uh, I guess we gotta go in there.

SPEAKER_00

It's like this is freaky, but I'm I'm cool. Let's go, you know? Yeah. Kat's like, uh-uh, uh, I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Then I do like when they go down and Clark is tying the Well, yeah, they're they're walking through the first part, and then they see like this like shoot almost. This very like slanted floor that goes down into like this dark nothingness, and Clark is like, Bobby, you gotta go in.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And he's like, okay.

SPEAKER_04

And Kat's like, why does he have to go in? Clark says, Well, the cat he has the camera, and she's like, It's not like it's attached to him.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, it's true.

SPEAKER_00

It's a good joke, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So Bobby gets tied around with a rope.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Yeah. And then uh when he goes down, I mean, he definitely sees something down there.

SPEAKER_02

He's okay, so before he goes down though, he's like, no, it's not that steep. Not that steep, yeah. I can walk down.

SPEAKER_00

As soon as he's on there, he's like, Oh shit, it is steep.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. I was like, the whole time, I was like, just slide on your butt and make a slide. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh so when he does see something and he, you know, runs back up, really tense scene.

SPEAKER_02

Well, let's talk about what he sees.

SPEAKER_00

Can we s like see what he sees though?

SPEAKER_02

We can see it. He doesn't see it. What about this weird ass face that's down there?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, uh, that's actually just one of the standees.

SPEAKER_02

Okay.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so in the pile of laundry, it's uh it's another one of those standees. So they they're everywhere, or that one's been torn up and particularly creepy.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, creepy in the pile of clothing. Yeah, and then he sees his shirt that says end apartment atop this room down here, guys. It's bad vibes. It's like if the backrooms was eerie, this is the backrooms that hasn't been cleaned, it's moist, it's liquidious. The ceiling is also the hallway at one point, and then there's just dirty piles of way darker than the rest of the back. Really a bad vibe. Like, let's just put it this way: the top level, that's the penthouse.

SPEAKER_00

You're having a great time there. A great time.

SPEAKER_02

This was one of the creepiest parts of the movie for me when Bobby gets down there. Because isn't there also like blood or something on clothes?

SPEAKER_04

Not yet. Clothes are very dirty though, and they are coated in stuff. Yeah, in closed are gross in.

SPEAKER_00

And then he sees something move in the doorway, runs his way back up, tries tries to, but whatever's down there gets the line, pulls him back in.

SPEAKER_02

He's up there and he's like, Case, save me. Don't let me go, don't let me go. And then he just gets pulled down.

SPEAKER_00

I like that they had fastened the line to this couch that's behind both Clark and Kat. So when they're like hearing Bobby being torn apart down there, they're just peering down. The couch then gets pulled, knocks them down, and the camera down too. It's just a really natural way I found to get all of them down to this gross level, the standard.

SPEAKER_04

Bad plan, though. Bad plan.

SPEAKER_00

Very stupid, very ill-advised.

SPEAKER_04

We see poor Bobby get dragged into a door, but the door is horizontal and attached to the wall. Yeah, that was creepy.

SPEAKER_00

Like a little mouth that goes yum yum yum and eats him right up. Yeah, cat, brave person. She just goes right after him, you know? Tries to like no thought to her own safety. She's just like, Bobby runs off to go grab him, you know? Honestly, I don't think Bobby deserved her. Remember that bit earlier when like uh, you know, uh Clark's at the door and he gives her like no time to come to the door.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that wasn't cool. I was like, no, did Bobby.

SPEAKER_00

I think Bobby kind of sucked, but uh Kat was good.

SPEAKER_02

I think he's a bit of a stoner dropout type.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. But Cat can do better.

SPEAKER_04

So then Kat is running for him. The gang separated, folks. Yeah. And then Clark now has the camera, and he kind of sees whatever the entity is, and then he runs in between the walls, and now he's in between the walls, and he's trying to run, and he's in one of these like pool room-looking situations.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I love this variation on the back rooms. Yeah, he's in the pool.

SPEAKER_04

It's so cool. Which was so disgusting. All just nasty tiles and like the tiled face guy.

SPEAKER_00

And then the water pipes just blasting.

SPEAKER_02

Cat behind a door? Well, he doesn't see it.

SPEAKER_00

It's interesting, yeah, because he runs into this like tiled off area, and then he hears Kat, Cat shouting at him from the other side of to him, the opaque wall, and she's saying, like, open the door. Yeah, it's coming, or something's coming. And she's saying it's like I'm on the other side of the glass. Yeah. He says it's not glass. What are you talking about? Yeah. So it's kind of interesting that the backrooms can look different from whatever you know room you're in. Which just sucks, man.

SPEAKER_02

It kind of makes sense though.

SPEAKER_04

It does.

SPEAKER_00

It's great. I really like it. Uh doesn't have like the geo geography does not have to make sense. No, exactly.

SPEAKER_04

It just is, and then she's panicking, she's like, Clark rape behind you. But then it's great, because then you see whatever is grab the camera and then we just cut.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we're cut. And uh the the scene that follows is one of for me the the scariest in the movie. Because we have this uh this flashback, you know, of uh the little girl who we saw uh in the scene just after the cold open in a in a house that looks like it's the stank rooms, yeah, but is you know, her mom. Yeah, exactly. Like this bit does freak me out because child abuse just definitely bothers me and definitely bad.

SPEAKER_02

And this is kind of where we see like where all of Mary's trauma stems.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, yeah. Yeah, apparently her mom has schizophrenia, agoraphobia, definitely. She's almost yeah, she's almost opening a window, and then just like the mom coming into the room going, Mary, oh, that's got me so bad.

SPEAKER_04

Her voice, it's like two different voices, is what they did. Yes. But yeah, I did like watching the second time like, oh, Mary's trying to get to the window.

SPEAKER_00

Obviously, with then we see that, you know, the the house gets demolished sometime after. Or no, I guess that was part of the dream because it gets demolished in the present day. But we do see Mary visiting her mom in a mental hospital, also a very liminal space, you know, creepy, creepy looking hospital. Yeah, and she's just wheeled off. So Mary is, you know, not doing so good. Quite traumatized. Yeah. But she actually gets a call on her machine from Clark. Yeah. Remember that? And he says, Mary, I went through the window and I'm not coming back. Coming back, exactly. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And she's like, oh shit.

SPEAKER_00

Uh-oh. Yeah. So that's what gets her in the movie, I guess.

SPEAKER_02

Why do you think that Mary goes to find Clark?

SPEAKER_04

Like she could just be like, Well, this is beyond me like her patient, and she's the last person who had contact with him. In 1990, there's no cell phones to the extent that we have now. And since she saw him, what could have been presumed as a mental health crisis? That's kind of her responsibility.

SPEAKER_00

I think it's also not just it being her responsibility, like in a you know, moral sense. I think it's also that she couldn't save her mom. And I think it's this, you know, maybe survivors' guilds, this complex where she feels responsible for people who are going through mental health crises. So she needs to go find Clark at the door the door.

SPEAKER_04

To Ottomans?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, exactly. So sh yeah, yeah. So she goes to you know, Captain Clark's doors open, you know. Yeah. Uh, and she finds her way downstairs because the lights are flickering. Um, and I actually really enjoy what gets her into the black back rooms.

SPEAKER_02

Me as well.

SPEAKER_00

It's a fly.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, this part was so cool. It was so like just little, but I think that it was so effective.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like a little house fly flies through into the back rooms and she's like, what the fuck?

SPEAKER_04

I like the sound design too, just yep.

SPEAKER_00

Because like I feel like Mary is not the type of person who would see like that doorway that is, you know, outlined with tape. I don't think that she would put her hand up to it. Because it wouldn't even cross her mind that anything Clark has said is real. So she needed that little push of seeing a fly to go, oh, something's actually happening here.

SPEAKER_04

And it is written on the whiteboard.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. She's got the map door, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Which I'm like, oh no.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of good like segues in the street. Totally in this film.

SPEAKER_00

It's really well motivated. I enjoy that. Yeah. She finds her way in.

SPEAKER_04

And all the furniture's gone from the front room.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, yeah. I think that it's been mostly ported out into the main room. Okay. Because like that main room, or I guess the basement of the furniture store is like crazy cluttered at that point. So I think Clark has been like taking these out, maybe doing experiments on them or whatever. Yeah. But she finds her way around the corner to a mural that has been painted on the wall. Uh, and this is, I guess, our biggest tease for what the actual big bad of this movie is gonna be. Yeah. Yeah. What did you guys think of this mural?

SPEAKER_04

Well, the first time watching it, it reminded me of a Basquiat painting. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then uh Is that a style or an artist?

SPEAKER_04

An artist. Oh, okay. And then when you But then a lot of people will like use that style. Was he French or did he just live in New York with a French name? I can't remember. You know, but it's like maybe Haitian or something. I can't quite remember. But um, yeah, I loved it. And then watching it the second time, I understood it so much better. Cool.

SPEAKER_00

But we see this giant A big pirate holding up a man to his mouth.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. A little um what's that uh painting of the Saturn eating his sons. Yeah, totally.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't even connect that, but that's so true. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I really like it.

SPEAKER_00

And then uh Mary, oh, this is maybe one of my favorite jump scares.

SPEAKER_04

Such a subtle little jump scare.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, turning around and just seeing a shadow or a shoulder, just a little shape. Yeah, just go around the corner out of sight.

SPEAKER_04

Or like peek up behind, and we just hear and then we hear someone talk.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. It's Clark saying, You found me, you know.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and his voice is calm.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, and it's Clark, and he he comes onto the screen, like, you know, and I'm like, What's up with you? What what's gonna be different about you now, you know? Yeah. Oh, because actually going back at this point, we had seen entities in the back rooms that are malformed. When Clark was doing his little run around the stank rooms in the Christmas area, yeah. Yes, we saw a woman whose face is stretched and distorted. So I was like, Is Clark going to be like now one of these things strange? But not so. He comes full in view and he's fine. Yeah, well, fine is you know a relative term. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Isn't this where he says like I don't feel like lonely in here? I like it in here.

SPEAKER_04

That's a little bit later. But yeah, he does say this one thing because he's like, You have to be more quiet, blah blah blah. Yes. You hear footsteps. Yeah, your footsteps, and then we hear this big thing stomping. He's like, Well, as he approaches her, he's like, Don't worry, it's just me. You know me. You know me. It's just me. And um then he chokes her out and says it's for her own good.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah. And I really love the transition where uh, you know, the the camera is blurring and it's shaking, and she's looking at the fluorescent light, and then it kind of fills the void, and uh her entire vision transitions us into um I think now we have that pretty interesting shot that is like her house, and then we go through the floor, and then every time we go through the floor, we go through like four or five times, the room becomes less and less detailed.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and we saw this as one of the trailers.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, but a different version, yeah, which is really interesting. I guess they didn't want to spoil like the location that is relevant to the story, uh, but I think it was made in Blender by Kane Parsons. Oh, for sure. What I heard. So that's pretty interesting, huh? Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then we go into her being tied up, revealing what Clark did to her after he choked her out that she's tied up on a like chair in this what looks like kind of like a dining room slash kitchen.

SPEAKER_00

Yep. Uh, and she's not alone. She's she's definitely not alone. There's a man in a striped shirt uh sitting at the table. There's a woman in the corner, and there's a dude in a wheelchair with a lamp behind her. But what's up with these guys?

SPEAKER_02

What's up with these guys? That's the question of the movie.

SPEAKER_04

They're not quite normal, are they? They have a few too many eyes, a few too many noses, yeah, a few too many buttons on their fingers for sure.

SPEAKER_00

Definitely the dude in the wheelchair I saw had three legs, at least.

SPEAKER_02

So that's interesting. And he's funny. He was a funny guy. He really was, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He gave me because this movie is funny. That's another thing I don't think we've quite mentioned yet.

SPEAKER_02

Dark humor.

SPEAKER_00

Dark humor. There's so many solid jokes. One of my favorite is definitely like Kat being like, Do you think he dosed us? And Bobby's like, Nah, I'd know it if we're high. And he's like, She's like, You are high. He's like, Pot doesn't count. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And then I do like that the stomp signs has pots, and he makes a joke about those as well. Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So I guess going back to this scene though, Clark, he's he's you know, he's gone a bit mad.

SPEAKER_02

You could see that.

SPEAKER_00

He's quite a bit insane at this point, yeah. Uh, and he's he's loving it. He loves being in the background.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, yes. This is where he starts talking about loving being there. He doesn't want to go back, yeah. He doesn't feel lonely.

SPEAKER_00

No, he's like the happiest he's ever been in there. Which is so sad. Yeah, and he wants to run the acting exercise. Exercise. Again. Uh, and you guys have really opened me up to the fact that I say eggs instead of eggs.

SPEAKER_02

Exercise. Yes. Exercise. Exercise.

SPEAKER_00

Exercise.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. Yeah. Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And this exercise has him, you know, doing the acting thing again.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Uh, but you know, he he he's really into it at this point.

SPEAKER_02

But now he's the one with the power in this dynamic.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. So he wants to Yeah, he wants Mary to tell him that he's right.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That he's right about everything. But he wants her to tell him as his wife.

SPEAKER_02

Yes. So that's just in a specific way that he wants. Because she right off the bat is like, You're right.

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_02

You're right. And he says, No. I don't want you to say it that easily.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, because obviously she'll say anything to you know to get untied. Then also, uh, you know, she has realized that he's right about the backrooms at least existing. Yeah. Um, but yeah, Clark, you know, slices the hair off of one of these backrooms ladies because, you know, that's his wife. I don't believe it's actually meant to be his wife.

SPEAKER_04

I believe so because he's like, This is my house. And also we see a picture of his wife, and she has red hair.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, she has red hair.

SPEAKER_04

And since he explains what the backrooms is, and it's all memories, he's like, out there, there's a man in a wheelchair with the lamp, there's this man in a plaid shirt, and he goes, and well, he doesn't say that's that's the only way he doesn't swing. So it's his wife, so he's still too ashamed to actually.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I guess you're right, because he he said he tried to do the exercise with her and it didn't come to anything because she can't respond to him. Yeah. I really like this moment though for Mary reaching her breaking point, you know?

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah, because he tries to put to well, he does. He like rips the hair off of this weird lady standing in the corner that is his wife. Yes, his wife. Um, and tries to put it on Mary, and Mary's not having it.

SPEAKER_00

So I love it. Her reaching her breaking point, and just being like, you know what, all of this is your fault.

SPEAKER_04

Yes.

SPEAKER_00

And you shouldn't have me tied up. And you are your own brain is one of my favorite lines that she says it's not, you know, it's not the drinking that made your wife leave you. It's not the anger, it's that he's a little bitch, and that he can't accept responsibility. It's amazing. It's really satisfying. And he's like not having it. He's like, no, stay in character.

SPEAKER_04

And then also, um, it's important to note that he also says they can't feel fear or pain. Yeah, the replicas, yeah. Yeah, and then also she's like, I can't fix you, and I can't save or fix anyone. Yeah. And then as soon as he's she said that, he comes to this realization, like, shit, okay, you're right. And he is gonna let her go.

SPEAKER_00

He's gonna let her go, and he's gonna stay there because he says, I don't want to change.

SPEAKER_04

And she's like, then don't.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And it's it's this great like anti-character arc where it's a guy who decides, you know what, I'm not gonna better myself.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And then leads him to a down a bad path.

SPEAKER_02

The pirate him comes in.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, exactly, yeah. So like the woman, the now scalped woman, runs into the corner of the room, gets terrified.

SPEAKER_02

And fear.

SPEAKER_00

In fear.

SPEAKER_02

He's an unreliable narrator. Exactly. That what he's saying is not the truth.

SPEAKER_00

Those footsteps again, and in walks in the seven, eight-foot-tall pirate Clark, the half-remembered, distorted, angry version of Clark.

SPEAKER_02

That just makes scary noises.

SPEAKER_00

Peg legged Clark. Uh, this guy is played by Robert. Please give me the last name, Devin. Babarotski.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, this is who I thought you guys were talking about. Yes. Him playing the pirate. Yes. Okay.

SPEAKER_00

So he is the actor who played the offspring, an alien Romulus. The seven-foot-tall. Yes, the seven-foot-tall former basketball player who now does a lot of creature work in horror movies. Awesome. And he is incredible. So good. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

I really did like. Remember how I told you guys to pay attention and remember that when Clark is angry in his monologue, he does the San Paku eyes because the pirate version of him only has those eyes. Yeah. They're tilted downwards. And also it's important to note that his angry face is more sad than angry. Exactly. It's not like malevolently angry. It's like as if someone were to be so ashamed and disappointed with themselves. Like it's more sorrow you read off of this big scary guy.

SPEAKER_00

Who uh then picks up regular Clark and bites into his neck, throws him around the room.

SPEAKER_02

And well, yes, Clark is trying to reason with this thing at first, and like, she says we don't we don't have to change. It's all good, it's just the way we're wired.

SPEAKER_00

And the pirate Clark is like given the big old chomp to not like what he actually does. Oh, it's so funny. Luckily, Mary is able to untie herself the rest of the way and and run off, and and now we have a wonderful chase scene.

SPEAKER_02

A really good chase scene.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah, so creepy. There's so many creepy moments in this. A lot of them are like when you see the pirate Clark from far away. Yeah. Like when he exits onto the lane, because we're in like this backrooms representation of Clark's neighborhood, which is indoors and outdoors and the giant ceiling fans. Yeah, the ceiling fans, and and Mary's running through, she runs through a couch area, twists her ankles, and that's slower for the rest of the chasing.

SPEAKER_04

The stairwells. Oh, yeah. The skyscraper.

SPEAKER_00

So if you guys aren't good with heights, this will be a difficult fat with hell.

SPEAKER_02

This was the scariest scene of the film for me. Yeah, that's the one. When she is climbing up this staircase, and just below it is nothing. It's just like a thousand million feet down. And my palms were sweating. Oh, yeah. And I was very nervous.

SPEAKER_00

I love it though.

SPEAKER_02

And then she like climbs up into the ceiling in this very small little square that if you misstep or don't get into, you're gonna fall into the street.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, totally. Yeah, but she makes her way into what she thinks is just Clark's store again. She's back in Captain Clark's store. You know? But when she tries the door to the exit, it doesn't work. She there's just more backrooms.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, and it's important to note that in the middle there is now one of the cavemans. Yes, exactly. A bunch of tanks that he's attached to.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Uh and then the entity, the the Clark pirate, finds her again. Uh they have a little tussle. She breaks its leg, you know, uh, she's still hurt herself, and I think she stumbles through the caveman, which then sets off these gas tanks. So she's gassed and she's gasping for air and crawling on the ground. Probably like the the last jump scare in the movie is when she's like almost passing out, and then she turns around and the Clark pirate is like just about to get her crawling on the ground too. That got me so bad.

SPEAKER_04

Then when she makes it through the crack.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, actually, just before that, uh, she's able to fight off the pirate Clark by bashing it on the side of the head with the bit of concrete that had her handprint. Yes, which is another hand. Yeah, using her, you know, childhood trauma against this this you know angry being.

SPEAKER_02

And it yeah, it gets her metaphorical.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Very elevated horror.

SPEAKER_04

And then she uh sneaks between this little crack in the wall.

SPEAKER_02

I love that scene though. Me too.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It I mean, and in the theater we watched it in, they recreated that.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, we have a little picture there.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and yeah, when she's like trying to run through there, and the pirate clerk is trying to get at her, and she realizes he can't, you can see a kind of a moment of like, oh, and sadness. Yeah, it's just sad. It's just sad, and then she sees what looks like beautiful blue sky. Oh, yeah, and she runs towards what is seemingly beautiful blue sky to enter another backrooms, and then the async has map suitcases there, and they spray one of them, one of them sprays around this trigger happy asshole, and the rest of them are like pulling him off of her, like, dude, that's a woman, stop.

SPEAKER_02

They kind of like realize that it's a person and not a totally standy. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So then she's taken through hallways, she's scanned as well, which I really enjoyed. Like, we see uh um a full-body scan, so they're like confirming that she's not a replicant, she is like an actual human, and she's taken through this facility and brought into an interrogation room. And then who enters Emily?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Mark DuPlace is finally in the movie. I was a little disappointed that he wasn't in the film more. I love him so much, I think he's a fantastic actor.

SPEAKER_00

We see him twice before.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, yeah, for little just little scenes. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

He's just like watching CTV camera, or he's at home and he's, you know, like piecing together what's going on. But yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And he's a family. He has a family.

SPEAKER_00

He looks to be just like a normal guy who works for this former MRI company.

SPEAKER_02

Uh and he's gotten himself into some shit. Yeah, exactly.

SPEAKER_00

He's been thrust into it because he's, you know, he has to investigate the the backrooms. That's his job to go through it and map it out. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And he's very kind and polite, but insistent.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly, yeah. Uh his name is Phil. That that's another reason why I think this movie's hilarious, because he just walks in, he's like, hi, um, I'm Phil. Yeah. Like, of course you are. Hi, Phil.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, he he does give Phil too, and I like that. He knows Phil. It's just he's just a guy, and I think that's also kind of this whole movie is just is. Yeah, you know. It's like everything is suburban. It's just suburban.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And it is. We get some reveals about the backrooms here, like that it is infinite, uh, doorways are opening up everywhere, they seem to know nothing about it at all, so they're just asking her any information. And uh, we're not sure if he she can even leave. That's what she's asking. Yeah, do I get to go home?

SPEAKER_02

I don't know. I don't know. He's just he just works there. Exactly. He doesn't know nothing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, so um the very last shot of the movie, when she's just after she's been speaking to Phil, is uh some representations of the backrooms we see. Um we see new rooms that we haven't seen before. Like we see the rubble of Mary's old house inside the backrooms. One of my favorite images, do you remember the telephone poles? Yeah. Yeah, so they have uh wanted no not wanted missing posters for Kat and Bobby replicated. They're they're kind of curving, they're spinning and clipping into the floor. It's very trippy and cool. And then we see a Mary Double just sitting in the room that we just saw in, but now in the background. A sandy. Yeah. And she's in horror. Well, she's got too many eyes. She's horrifying. She's horrified.

SPEAKER_04

And she's tied, like sitting all kind of tied like how she was.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. And it just kind of leaves you on like a real sad note.

SPEAKER_02

It's a sad the whole movie was a lot sadder than I thought it was gonna be.

SPEAKER_04

It was it made me way more sad.

SPEAKER_02

But I think it very much is relevant to today.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, and that's also what I was wanting to talk about with liminal horror. Yeah. Because I would say, as a geography major, I have to use my degree when I can, okay? So, like, this is based in 1990 with some of the most late 20th century architecture, early 21st century architecture out there, which unfortunately, a lot of this architecture has been replaced within the 2010s, I would say very rapidly, kind of across the world, but we can really see it here in Vancouver and just across North America, where you have all of the buildings from like the 40s to 90s being replaced by these five by one buildings. Like, you know, these new type of I'm sorry, ugly condos when it's like there's a shop in the bottom that's really expensive and everything's kind of plasticky sheet.

SPEAKER_02

A million high-rises. A million high-rises.

SPEAKER_04

Everything looks the same all across the world. It's like it's a global thing that's happening with new gentrification. And what's interesting is it's like when you think of the old haunted house, how it used to be the Gothic mansion, because a lot of those got abandoned during the Great Depression in the 30s, and that's why Scooby-Doo and a bunch of horror movies from the 70s and 80s have people exploring the abandoned Victorian Gothic style home because that's what was scary. So now we have all of these warehouses, which even when they were populated with items, were spooky. But now that a lot of these things are like, okay, we're getting torn down, we're just kind of here.

SPEAKER_02

It's like an old Zellars.

SPEAKER_04

Exactly. Old Zealars or an old bay or like an old mall that is about to get knocked down, shut down, and turned into something weirder. International village. No, for real. And it's just like um with that, and then you have COVID that happens in 2020, so then a lot of people are kind of walking around in these big spaces that are meant to have a lot of people, and there's now nobody there, and there's nothing creepier than a bunch of escalators, shiny floors, an airport with not a lot of people at night. And why I'm saying I think this is a very pertinent genre right now is because Severance also comes out. You know, and even though that guy was working on that project for years and kept pitching it to many places, nobody was picking it up. Now's the time when enough people can relate to that. And it's like the near past is now disappearing, and it's a memory, and it's haunted, and it's creepy, and just yeah, the strip malls, and we just see so many things changing because it's like now we're old enough to be like, I remember that time. Yeah and now it is the past, and just yeah, liminal space, and uh with the pandemic, I really think that has exacerbated the amount because then everyone was just on their freaking phones.

SPEAKER_02

Well, yeah, I mean, I feel like I had a little bit of a different take on it. Like, because you know, the backrooms are obviously this big liminal space that's very kind of depressing and sad and distorted. I feel like that's like kind of our brains these days.

SPEAKER_04

That's it.

SPEAKER_02

You know? Like we just have phones and technology to think for us, and when it comes down to it, when we don't have our phones around, we're just left to sit with ourselves. It's like the backrooms are your brains.

SPEAKER_04

Now imagine, guys, you're an international village and your phone died. Exactly. Exactly. But yeah, I really liked this movie, and the soundtrack's amazing.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, we're in the credits and then we're listening to that Boards of Canada song. It's very unsettling and fun.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And uh there are teases for sequels, but there's no post-credit scene. There's no Thanos showing up to be like, I'll be back in the backrooms to Pirate Clark will return.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, right. What was your quick take on the back rooms and if there's like kind of a metaphor for it?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean what you guys are saying is quite true. I but my takeaway was hee hee, big pirate guy. I I just like really enjoyed the movie as uh, oh, this is fun. I really love the locations and I love the the trippy mind-bendy visuals.

SPEAKER_02

But you can't deny that there was like this looming sadness. Oh no, no, there is this like looming sadness of the movie.

SPEAKER_00

But I think that it's it's taking this looming sadness and making something fun out of it.

SPEAKER_02

It's in that life.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly. Yes, that's how we process it, that's what we do with it. So it's like taking something that could be negative and just being like, but here's a fun play on it, you know, here's a fun way to spin it so that we're all enjoying ourselves, even while the world's being turned into a brutalist nightmare. So, anyway, um that's all I have to say about backrooms. Shall we move on to who won watch read when way?

SPEAKER_02

Let's do it.

SPEAKER_00

Please, please, let's do it. Uh, who would like to go first? I'm trying to remember of who.

SPEAKER_04

Crickets.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, how about I go first? Oh, cool. Alright, alright, alright. Uh, listen, you guys, it's been a little while, so I have a few too many things to mention. So I'm going to give you all of the things that I've been watching, and you get to choose which you want to talk about, okay? Huh? Okay. Uh I finished reading HB Lovecraft. His collected his entire collected works. I'm now reading Poe. I really like a short story called The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar, if you want to talk about that. And then recently for movies, I've watched The Frighteners, I've watched Cube, I've watched Obsession, Jeepers Creepers, and Cree. So, what are we talking about?

SPEAKER_02

You know what I want to hear about.

SPEAKER_00

Is it Creeper is it Jeepers Creepers?

SPEAKER_02

Both.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, okay. Dev, what do you want me to talk about?

SPEAKER_04

Uh Creep.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, cool. We'll do Jeepers, we'll do the creepy stuff, alright?

SPEAKER_04

Let's do it.

SPEAKER_00

Jeepers Creepers. I've been really looking forward to watching this.

SPEAKER_02

This is a like quite a childhood movie of that.

SPEAKER_00

And I can totally see that because if I had watched this when I was a kid, I would have like when I was like just getting into horror, like 11, 12 years old, would have loved it. 100% wholesale loved it because it's that old style of creepiness where it's just a spooky villain chasing two kids, and I'm like, cool. I love that. Uh I would say that I was down for like 70% of this movie. Yeah, sorry, didn't love it. Uh-huh. Right when we got to about the like police station, and I realized I'm like, ooh, checking the time here. Okay, it feels like we're not gonna, you know, progress beyond this police station, and we don't. The the climax of the film takes place there. So I feel like this movie was missing an act. You know, Justin Long gets kidnapped, and then sorry, spoilers. Spoilers for Jeepers Creepers, and then we we don't see him again. He's dead, you know? Like, I mean we see him, but we see him skinned and and dead. There should have been, you know, like I'm gonna say should have, as in definitively screenplay structure-wise, another act where she goes and rescues him. But there's a lot of things.

SPEAKER_02

I wouldn't be mad at that. I obviously would have liked to see more of the movie. I frickin' love that movie so much.

SPEAKER_00

And there's a lot to love in it. Totally. Yeah. Yeah. They they should have minimized the police station scene, you know, like not made that the final climactic set piece of the movie, so that he's kidnapped, and then you return to the very interesting setting of the farm and the pit down there, where she has to go in, complete her character arc, save her brother. That's how that movie should have ended. Instead, they burn down they burn down the farm off-screen, and it ends in some location we've never seen, where the creeper just kills him and steals his eyes. That's nothing.

SPEAKER_02

Well, but then we would be breaking the rule that you know Justin Long needs to always die.

SPEAKER_00

In his horror movies, yeah, yeah. Oh, I don't have I don't feel good about him and the and the Grave Encounters reboot. He's not making it out, is he?

SPEAKER_02

No, no, definitely not. How did you feel about Justin Long and Jupiter's creepers?

SPEAKER_00

Okay, I never realized this, but Justin Long's a good actor.

SPEAKER_02

And kind of a cutie?

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, man. Extremely so, but also you never thought he was a good actor?

SPEAKER_00

I never considered it. Like, never once. I blasphemy. I saw him in movies and I'm like, I like Justin Long, but I never once considered him as like an actor with any crazy good acting prowess, I guess. But seeing this movie, I'm like, oh shit, he's got chops. You know, like he sells terror really well, he's naturally charismatic. Like, I I liked seeing him in it and playing terrified and on the run.

SPEAKER_02

I specifically like the scene where he goes down into the hole and falls through the hole and he's looking up at Trish just like he sells that so well.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, totally, totally.

SPEAKER_02

Also, I think Trish and Derry are like really believably brother and sister.

SPEAKER_00

Totally, yeah, yeah, yeah. Like the the relationship there is great, which again is why I'm just kind of disappointed that I didn't see what I feel is the conclusion of their arc, you know? Because I always thought that the movie continued into Jeepers Creepers Part 2, and she returned and it's like a continuation of that story. Looked up the synopsis and I'm like, oh, didn't watch it.

SPEAKER_02

I actually haven't seen this. Yeah, so there we go. And I want to leave it at that.

SPEAKER_00

Creep is great. Uh so I liked Creep way, way, way better. Creep is fine. Um and it's fantastic. Marc Duplas is amazing in it. It's, you know, everything it means to be and more, basically, you know? It's a tight 87-minute no 77-minute film.

SPEAKER_04

That's a perfect strange length like that. Totally.

SPEAKER_00

So I loved Creep and I'm excited to watch Creep 2.

SPEAKER_02

I like yesterday, but I personally think Creep 2 is better.

SPEAKER_00

Cool. And I'm excited.

SPEAKER_02

Everything that you like about Creep One is amped up in the second one. And the main character that's with Marc Duplas, I think, is more likable.

SPEAKER_00

Great. Okay. Because uh, what's his name? Aaron Ryan. Yeah. Whatever his name is, is not likable, but by, you know, design.

SPEAKER_04

Bath Time. Bath Day!

SPEAKER_00

Have a tubby who's tubby time. Yeah. That's it for me. That's my who won't watch read when Emily.

SPEAKER_02

Uh I was so excited to talk about your movies that I wasn't even thinking about what I've seen. Um, what have I done? It's been a while. When was the last time we did an episode? Two weeks ago-ish, something like that, yeah. I guess what have we done between now and then? I feel like I've just been doing more film stuff, run and guns.

SPEAKER_00

You are allowed to uh have your Who W What Watch read when I be a thing you are going to watch. And you've said many times over this week that you're going to watch Obsession.

SPEAKER_02

I need to watch Obsession. Like I said at the beginning of this episode, I've had so many different people tell me that they've gone and seen this movie and that I have to watch it because it's so good. But I do sometimes fear that when I hear a movie has so much hype and it's so good, I'm like, well, uh, you know, I'm scared I'm not gonna like it. It's not gonna be like that.

SPEAKER_00

Exactly what I thought was gonna happen to me.

SPEAKER_02

Everyone is saying that. Like they were thinking the same thing, but then it lived up to it.

SPEAKER_00

Can't deny I have a little bit of a non-conformist streak in me. So I went into that movie crossing my arms and being like, it's probably not even that good.

SPEAKER_02

That's exactly how I feel.

SPEAKER_00

And then watching that movie, I went, oh shit, it is so good.

SPEAKER_04

The wrong choice because my sister wasn't sure what movie she and her friend should watch one day, and I think it was between Hokum, Mile End Kicks, which is a movie based in Montreal. My sister and I lived there for a very long time in our 20s, and then um obsession. And I'm like, okay, well, Hokum is really scary and sad. So I don't know if you'd want to watch that if you're not quite in that mood. She's like, no, scarier. Well, hold on one second, Tom. Let's find the story. Um, Miland Kicks, I'm like, that might just make you like really nostalgic and emotionally sad. So I don't know if that's mood you're in. I'm like, I want a horror movie, Devin. Right, so I was just like, you know, obsession I thought was just kind of gonna be like a cheesy, like little date movie that we've seen before. And then she called me right after. She's like, Well, thank you for terrifying me. I am now forever haunted and sad. And I'm like, my bad. She's like, Devin, that movie was amazing.

SPEAKER_02

I'm like, well Hey, you guys know me. I'm hard to scare.

SPEAKER_04

It's a you'll watch it. We I don't want to say anything, and you'll be like, Yep, you'll get it. Did I will I get scared? Yes, yes, yes, and you will enjoy it.

SPEAKER_00

It was scarier than Hokum.

SPEAKER_04

No way. I don't believe that. I think they actually are pretty, I don't want to say too much because scarier than that witch.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Okay. Okay, in this episode, I un up until next episode, I will watch it by next episode.

SPEAKER_03

Great.

SPEAKER_02

But in this episode, I'm saying no way, it is not scarier than Hokum.

SPEAKER_04

And also, I don't want to say too much without spoiling it, but it's kind of you've seen the trailer, you know the premise. The guy makes a wish that this girl's in love with him, right?

SPEAKER_02

It doesn't look scary to me.

SPEAKER_00

And it's just like I hope you've got an appetite because you're gonna eat those words.

SPEAKER_04

But also it's like we'll see. We'll see. I don't know, because I think with with Hokum, we know what happens with the woman, and just like it'd be interesting. I don't know. I think it's we'll find it interesting. Um it's scary.

SPEAKER_02

I'm ready. I'm ready. And then for me, Maha Wa Ri wa huh.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. I've been watching Widow's Bay. Oh yes, yes, yes, I want to talk about it. Maritime horror. You guys the monster of the week is back. Oh, good, good, good. I love Monster of the Week. It's still a continuous story. All the monsters all correlate with each other. It is so bloody addictive. It is funny as hell. And when I was watching the first episode, I was like, oh, the show takes place in the 90s because all the cars are like from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. The fashion and then the comedy, it's like the writing is so good. And then also like people have Rolodexes, the font, you know, that kind of Stephen King Stranger Things font that was still used in the 90s, so calendars have that. Just people's fashion kind of feels like a Twin Peaksy maritime village, so it kind of looks like that era. And then you just have to remember fashion now and 90s are very similar. And then one character, this isn't a spoiler or anything, he's from the mainland, and he has a black guy. And watching, I'm like, well, that's not exactly a hairstyle that was used in the 90s for like a black guy would have. I'm like, that's more of a modern take on it. And then I notice a snapsack, I'm like, and that's a modern this is a remote island, it's hard to get stuff.

SPEAKER_00

They're frozen in time.

SPEAKER_04

But so it is present day, but then not literally. Yeah, but it's like it's present day, but what's works so well with this remote location is like we have a bunch of Gulf Islands here. Even in our own towns, we know how bad cell phone service is, how hard it is to get good internet connection. So it is present day, but they still have all the struggles of the 90s, and this is why the monster of the week really works here.

SPEAKER_02

I'm sorry, what is he called?

SPEAKER_04

Widow's Bay. You will love it, Emily. It is funny and also good horror, good scare.

unknown

Oh, it is good.

SPEAKER_04

Is it on Prime? Apple. And that's why the quality is so damn good, folks. Because they don't make a lot of shows, but the ones they make.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's kind of like uh, you know, Prime should be putting more money into their shows because they have infinite money. It seems like Apple is one of those streamers that is like, oh, we actually do have limitless resources, so maybe we should actually funnel some of that into our show.

SPEAKER_04

So highly, highly, highly recommend. It's gets released weekly, so I think there's six episodes out right now, or so this week.

SPEAKER_00
