00:01:55.920 We made our way verse by verse from chapter one all the way through chapter 40. 00:01:56.159 --> 00:02:14.800 And then a couple of broadcasts ago, we started going back and just hitting a little, uh, well, a note here and a thought there, an idea in this place, and a principle in that place, some things that we did not stop to cover and to talk about as we made our way through the book of Exodus. 00:02:15.039 --> 00:02:20.719 We have come to material in the 17th chapter, that's where we stopped last time. 00:02:21.759 --> 00:02:39.439 We have a picture as Moses is up on the hilltop with his hands uplifted to heaven, and Aaron and her helping him to keep his hands uh upheld as the Lord fights uh for the people against Amalek. 00:02:39.919 --> 00:02:56.639 And there's a threefold picture in this uh scene that we discussed as the Moses pictures the Lord Jesus who ascended up to heaven and maketh intercession for us, according to Romans 8 and verse 34. 00:02:57.280 --> 00:03:07.199 And in that chapter of Romans, uh there are a there's a list of great blessings enjoyed by saved Christian people. 00:03:08.080 --> 00:03:13.520 This is the high point that at the right hand of God there is one who is making intercession for us. 00:03:13.599 --> 00:03:21.280 He's there on behalf of his own, he's actively helping by interceding for everybody that is washed in his blood. 00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:25.520 And so in the midst of the battle, God's servant is not alone. 00:03:26.080 --> 00:03:30.879 But these three men on the hilltop, secondly, show how vital prayer is. 00:03:31.520 --> 00:03:33.840 They went up unitedly. 00:03:34.080 --> 00:03:38.560 Verse 10 said, Moses, Aaron, and her went up to the top of the hill. 00:03:38.800 --> 00:03:43.680 Now it may seem a small point, but nothing is placed in the Bible without significance. 00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:52.479 And the mention of them going up together emphasizes that there was unity of purpose amongst them as they set out to pray. 00:03:52.800 --> 00:04:05.039 You know, of the apostles it is written that they all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, that's Acts 1.14, that they were all with one accord in one place, Acts 2.1. 00:04:05.759 --> 00:04:16.240 Psalm 133 1 says, Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity. 00:04:16.720 --> 00:04:22.000 They also, they also approached the time of prayer with determination. 00:04:22.319 --> 00:04:24.319 They went up to the top of the hill. 00:04:24.560 --> 00:04:30.800 The thought of stopping halfway, which would have made the journey physically easier, doesn't seem to have been considered. 00:04:31.199 --> 00:04:33.920 They set off to reach the hilltop. 00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:38.480 Prayer is one of the most difficult features of the Christian life to discipline. 00:04:38.720 --> 00:04:52.160 In the morning there's not enough time, there's so much to do, so we think we'll leave it till evening, and then the duties of the day have worn us out, and now we uh the body and mind aren't fresh enough to complete the task. 00:04:52.399 --> 00:04:58.879 Attempts in the middle of the day are often pushed about or moved aside by activity. 00:04:59.839 --> 00:05:08.480 There really has to be a determined purpose in turning aside to pray, such as these men displayed when they went all the way to the top of that hill. 00:05:08.560 --> 00:05:12.800 And then as they commenced their work on the hilltop, there was consideration for each other. 00:05:12.959 --> 00:05:16.560 Moses held the rod in his hand, singular. 00:05:16.800 --> 00:05:22.560 It would appear that he held up the hand in which was the rod, and then passed it to the other hand, then back again. 00:05:22.639 --> 00:05:27.199 From one to the other, the rod passed, with the purpose of ensuring that it was always held up. 00:05:27.360 --> 00:05:32.800 But as the time passed, you remember the hands of Moses became heavy. 00:05:33.040 --> 00:05:38.480 And it's not hard to appreciate the pain he would feel as he stood with an arm raised, holding that rod high. 00:05:38.639 --> 00:05:41.600 You ought to try it sometime, I'm sure many of you have. 00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:48.560 And then it was that support of his two colleagues that comes into view. 00:05:48.720 --> 00:06:00.879 They put a stone under him on which he could lean, and they held up his hands, and together they accomplished what alone would have been exceedingly difficult or probably impossible. 00:06:01.839 --> 00:06:10.000 As Joshua and his men fought in the valley, they could look up to the hill and see that the rod of Moses was still being held high. 00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:22.720 It was like a banner prominently raised to encourage them, and they knew that this was the rod that had brought judgment on Egypt, and they were confident it would have the same effect upon Amalek. 00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:27.439 And what a beautiful picture this is of mutual support in prayer. 00:06:28.000 --> 00:06:37.920 When prayer is being offered in the prayer meeting, it's the responsibility of all who are present to pay attention to the prayer, to bear up in the presence of God, him who is praying. 00:06:38.240 --> 00:06:44.319 When there's such common interest and consideration, it really breathes life into a prayer meeting. 00:06:44.560 --> 00:06:50.959 And these men stayed on that hilltop until the going down of the sun, as long as the battle was being waged. 00:06:51.600 --> 00:06:54.319 They continued their intercession. 00:06:54.560 --> 00:07:02.879 Oh, no doubt there were many moments when fatigue spoke to their flesh and said, uh, you ought to quit now. 00:07:03.040 --> 00:07:06.160 Who could blame them if they came down off that mount? 00:07:06.240 --> 00:07:14.000 But they knew, they knew the work they were doing was vital, and they kept their watch. 00:07:15.360 --> 00:07:27.519 Like them Christians today, need to keep at prayer till the going down of the sun, the battle's not over, the fight's not won, the enemy's still in the field, God's people are still in the field. 00:07:28.079 --> 00:07:32.800 Let us not, let us not forsake the place of prayer. 00:07:32.959 --> 00:07:38.560 And then this rod held up by Moses was one of authority. 00:07:39.040 --> 00:07:42.720 That had been evidenced by its use in Egypt. 00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:48.480 Above the valley there stood one with a rod of authority in his hand, and the events on earth were dependent on this. 00:07:49.120 --> 00:07:50.560 Moses tired. 00:07:51.839 --> 00:07:52.319 Sure. 00:07:52.720 --> 00:07:55.279 But in heaven, God never tires. 00:07:55.759 --> 00:07:58.399 The rod of authority never lowered. 00:07:58.720 --> 00:08:11.680 No matter how fierce was the onslaught of Amalek, they could gain no victory because the one overlooking the conflict fought for his people. 00:08:12.079 --> 00:08:15.519 The lesson is that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men. 00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:20.000 Sometimes sometimes we forget about that. 00:08:20.800 Now, when this matter was over, Moses was to write this in a book. 00:08:39.600 --> 00:08:45.200 And this is the first instruction in Scripture for someone to write. 00:08:46.320 --> 00:08:52.799 It seems that Moses had to write that the remembrance of Amalek would be utterly blotted out. 00:08:54.320 --> 00:08:56.480 Just get rid of it completely. 00:08:57.200 --> 00:08:58.000 And why? 00:08:58.240 --> 00:08:59.759 Why was it written in a book? 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:05.600 Well, the reason was that it had to be rehearsed in the ears of Joshua so that it would never be forgotten by him. 00:09:05.919 --> 00:09:09.279 An event that he always had to keep in the forefront of his mind. 00:09:09.759 --> 00:09:19.600 Even although there was a blood relationship between Amalek and Israel, there had to be no treaty, no alliance, no agreement with them at all. 00:09:19.840 --> 00:09:27.279 The Lord had declared that Amalek would be blotted out and God's people could have no links to such a nation. 00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:37.840 A solemn reminder in Deuteronomy 25, 17, remember what Amalek did unto thee by the way when ye were come forth out of Egypt. 00:09:38.799 --> 00:09:41.279 And then a number of points we need to consider. 00:09:41.840 --> 00:09:50.000 First, the future of Amalek did indeed confirm that the judgment of God was carried out. 00:09:50.960 --> 00:10:06.000 Second, Saul was ordered when he was king to smite the Amalekites after having had brought to attention, to his attention, the fact that the Lord remembered that which Amalek did in Israel. 00:10:06.159 --> 00:10:13.440 1 Samuel 15, 2 quotes the Deuteronomy passage and said, Saul, don't you remember what they did? 00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:16.240 Don't you remember what God commanded? 00:10:17.120 --> 00:10:18.960 But Saul failed in this. 00:10:19.200 --> 00:10:25.039 He spared Agag, king of the Amalekites, and the best of their flocks. 00:10:25.360 --> 00:10:27.759 1 Samuel 15, 20 to 21. 00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:37.039 Later, David vanquished these people while recovering all that they had taken from Ziklag, an Israelite city. 00:10:37.200 --> 00:10:39.360 That's 1 Samuel chapter 30. 00:10:40.320 --> 00:10:51.519 A great blow against what remained of Amalek took place during the reign of Hezekiah, when five hundred men of Simeon smote the rest of the Amalekites that were escaped. 00:10:57.679 --> 00:11:00.399 And despite this, a few survived. 00:11:00.639 --> 00:11:03.440 And the final reference to them is when Haman. 00:11:04.000 --> 00:11:04.960 You remember him? 00:11:05.200 --> 00:11:13.840 Haman, the Agagite, from Agag, people that Saul spared in disobedience to the word of God. 00:11:14.080 --> 00:11:24.000 This man, known for his hatred of the Jews, was a courtier in the palace of Ahusarius, and he was disgraced and hanged for his plot against the Jews. 00:11:24.159 --> 00:11:27.360 Esther 7 and verse number 10. 00:11:28.480 --> 00:11:35.679 Now it should be noted in passing that Joshua was the first man to be instructed to live by the book. 00:11:36.159 --> 00:11:40.559 Joshua 1.8, the book of the law, was the guide for all Israel. 00:11:40.639 --> 00:11:47.039 And as the leader of the nation, Joshua had to set an example of obedience to the word of God. 00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:49.120 And he did. 00:11:49.840 --> 00:11:50.799 And he did. 00:11:51.440 --> 00:11:55.919 Those Amalekites, I'll tell you, God's people have enemies. 00:11:56.240 --> 00:12:00.080 And in your life, you have enemies of your faith. 00:12:00.480 --> 00:12:03.919 And you better get rid of them fully and completely as soon as you can. 00:12:04.080 --> 00:12:06.960 They're not going to leave you alone, that's for sure. 00:12:07.440 --> 00:12:19.759 Now in Exodus 17, verse 16, there's an altar being built at this particular spot, and we're told the reason why. 00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:21.440 The reason why. 00:12:40.480 --> 00:12:42.559 Verse 15, Moses built an altar. 00:12:42.720 --> 00:12:49.120 Verse 16, because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation. 00:12:51.120 --> 00:12:52.480 Don't forget it. 00:12:53.279 --> 00:12:57.200 Amalek has always been opposed to God. 00:12:58.159 --> 00:13:01.039 This is why that nation will be put out of remembrance. 00:13:01.279 --> 00:13:08.720 In opposing Israel, Amalek raised its hand against their God, who dwelt in the cloud. 00:13:10.159 --> 00:13:20.639 Now, there were other nations which were less than friendly to Israel, but it appears that the censure against Amalek was particularly strong. 00:13:20.879 --> 00:13:23.120 And there are a number of reasons for this. 00:13:23.679 --> 00:13:30.720 Amalek, as we noted, was a blood relation to Israel and should even have had natural feelings of affection for them. 00:13:31.200 --> 00:13:37.519 And Amalek was the first nation to deliberately seek to destroy Israel. 00:13:38.320 --> 00:13:43.600 Other nations later opposed them, but notice must be taken of how they acted. 00:13:44.000 --> 00:13:56.159 First, permission was asked of the king of Edom to pass through his territories with the promise that Israel would not touch the crops or take water from the wells. 00:13:56.799 --> 00:14:01.840 Edom refused permission and led an army to block the way. 00:14:02.799 --> 00:14:05.039 Israel then turned aside to seek another route. 00:14:05.120 --> 00:14:07.039 That's in Numbers chapter 20. 00:14:07.519 --> 00:14:13.120 Then Arod, king of the Canaanites, came against Israel and took some of them captive. 00:14:13.440 --> 00:14:16.639 Israel fought with them and destroyed them, Numbers 21, 1 to 3. 00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:24.559 Sion, king of the Emorites, he refused permission for Israel to pass through his land, and he gathered an army which fought against Israel. 00:14:24.799 --> 00:14:29.360 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, Numbers 21, verse 21 to 30. 00:14:29.519 --> 00:14:41.200 Then Og, a big old Og the giant, king of Bashan, he fought with them and was so completely defeated that of his armies there was none left him alive. 00:14:41.840 --> 00:14:44.240 Numbers 21, 33 to 35. 00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:53.279 The king of the Moabites, in alliance with Midian, sought assistance from Balaam to curse Israel, but in this he failed. 00:14:53.600 --> 00:15:01.039 After the sad episode when the people committed whoredom with the daughters of Moab, Moses was instructed to vex the Midianites and smite them. 00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:05.200 That's Numbers 22, verse 1 through 25, 18. 00:15:05.279 --> 00:15:11.039 And the Midianites were decisively defeated in Numbers chapter 31. 00:15:11.200 --> 00:15:16.320 Now, the only enemy on this list who was not engaged in battle was Edom. 00:15:17.039 --> 00:15:20.639 And the reason was he didn't seek to destroy Israel in this way. 00:15:20.879 --> 00:15:26.000 All the others did, even Moab and Midian, who did battle by using another kind of warfare. 00:15:27.200 --> 00:15:29.200 That which was of the spirit world. 00:15:30.320 --> 00:15:33.679 To oppose Israel meant overwhelming defeat. 00:15:34.639 --> 00:15:39.840 But all these enemies stood against Israel as their 40-year journey was coming to an end. 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:41.840 And Israel was traveling to Canaan. 00:15:41.919 --> 00:15:47.519 But Amalek, Amalek was the only enemy to attack them at the beginning of the journey. 00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:58.240 And the defeat they suffered was of particular significance because it showed what would be the end of all Israel's enemies. 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:07.919 The Bible says this, speaking of the New Testament church, and as we've said so many times, we we learn spiritual lessons from physical people. 00:16:08.879 --> 00:16:14.960 Israel, earthly people, the church, heavenly people, the weapons of our warfare are not carnal. 00:16:15.039 --> 00:16:18.480 We don't use swords and guns and bombs and missiles and the rest of that. 00:16:18.960 --> 00:16:20.639 That's not Christianity. 00:16:21.200 --> 00:16:35.440 But we learn, we learn that God fights for us against our foes, spiritual foes, that God gives us victory over our enemies, spiritual enemies. 00:16:35.759 --> 00:16:44.799 And 2 Thessalonians 1.6 says, seeing it as a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you. 00:16:45.919 --> 00:16:47.840 And so you can count on it. 00:16:48.080 --> 00:16:51.200 You don't have to take vengeance, you don't have to get even. 00:16:51.840 --> 00:16:59.279 God knows, God remembers, God will settle all the scores. 00:17:00.320 --> 00:17:01.440 Praise the Lord. 00:17:01.679 --> 00:17:11.759 In chapter 19, Moses goes up on the mountain for the first time. 00:17:12.640 --> 00:17:18.640 And his dealings with God there occupy the book of Exodus until the end of chapter 34. 00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:24.079 And in that period of time, he ascends up on the mount seven times. 00:17:24.240 --> 00:17:27.359 We mentioned this way, way back in our study. 00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:29.920 Seven trips up the mountain. 00:17:30.319 --> 00:17:35.440 The initial message to Israel, he goes up in 1903 and comes down in 1907. 00:17:36.720 --> 00:17:42.319 Instructions to prepare for the third day, he goes up in 1908, comes down in 1914. 00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:46.480 His charge to warn the people not to come near. 00:17:46.720 --> 00:17:52.319 He goes up in chapter 19, verse 20, comes down in chapter 19, verse 25. 00:17:52.960 --> 00:17:59.359 He draws near after the giving of the Ten Commandments, chapter 20, verse 21, and comes down in 24 3. 00:18:00.559 --> 00:18:09.039 The covenant meal and return to the camp is implied in verses eleven to twenty-one of chapter twenty-four, where he goes up in verse nine and down in verse eleven. 00:18:09.759 --> 00:18:13.839 The two tables of stone and the charge regarding the tabernacle are given. 00:18:14.160 --> 00:18:18.400 When he goes up in twenty-four, twelve and comes down in thirty-two, fifteen. 00:18:18.960 --> 00:18:28.079 And then the second two tables of stone are taken up the mountain in thirty-four four, and down he comes in thirty-four, verse twenty-nine. 00:18:28.240 --> 00:18:30.799 What a career Moses had. 00:18:31.440 --> 00:18:39.200 What an incredible life of those meetings with God on the mountain. 00:18:40.160 --> 00:18:51.599 Now, the Hebrew people, Hebrew people, the message to them in chapter 19 was addressed to the house of Jacob and the children of Israel. 00:18:53.759 --> 00:19:07.279 Which is a very curious thing, as the kingdom is not divided and does not split into ten and two, Israel and Judah, until 1 Kings chapter 13 and 14. 00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:12.079 But here God is already referring to the house of Jacob and the children of Israel. 00:19:12.319 --> 00:19:16.960 Now the name House of Jacob reminded them that they had gone down to Egypt. 00:19:17.759 --> 00:19:27.200 Genesis 46, 27 says, All the souls of the house of Jacob which came into Egypt were threscore and ten. 00:19:27.920 --> 00:19:36.079 Their background and the behavior of the house of Jacob, which led to their being in Egypt, must not be forgotten. 00:19:36.400 --> 00:19:46.799 As the house of Jacob, they did not deserve the grace of God which they had experienced in their deliverance by the blood of the Lamb. 00:19:47.119 --> 00:19:59.599 It is remarkable that when the coming kingdom of the Lord Jesus is described by Luke, he writes, And he shall reign over the house. 00:20:00.400 --> 00:20:04.559 Of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 00:20:04.720 --> 00:20:06.079 That's Luke 133. 00:20:06.640 --> 00:20:12.720 That coming glory will also be due entirely to the grace of God. 00:20:13.599 --> 00:20:19.359 They had not earned the right to be delivered, nor will they earn that right in a future day. 00:20:20.079 --> 00:20:23.279 But God will give it to them. 00:20:23.599 --> 00:20:33.839 They were also called the children of Israel, referring to the dignity bestowed upon them as the descendants of the man who became a prince with God. 00:20:34.640 --> 00:20:51.279 The former expression, House of Jacob, is found only once in Genesis, only here in Exodus, Exodus chapter 19, and 22 times in Scripture. 00:20:51.519 --> 00:21:01.920 The name children of Israel first used after the new name was given to Jacob at Peniel, Genesis 32, and it's included in the first verse of Exodus. 00:21:03.519 --> 00:21:06.240 So God doesn't use words for no reason. 00:21:06.400 --> 00:21:13.759 There's always a reason, an important meaning behind everything that God has to say. 00:21:13.920 --> 00:21:18.160 Now, with privilege comes responsibility. 00:21:18.799 --> 00:21:23.200 Moses brought this message from the Lord to Israel. 00:21:24.400 --> 00:21:33.759 If, if, if you keep my words, if you keep my commandments, if you obey me, they'd be a peculiar treasure. 00:21:34.880 --> 00:21:45.039 This word's used eight times in the Old Testament, and six of those times it refers specifically to the nation of Israel. 00:21:45.279 --> 00:22:00.400 Exodus 19 5, Deuteronomy 7 6, Deuteronomy 14 2, Deuteronomy 26 18, Psalm 135, verse 4, Malachi chapter 3, and verse 17. 00:22:01.039 --> 00:22:16.480 God's peculiar treasure, not gold, not silver, not diamonds, not rubies, not planets, not galaxies, no, no, people, people, his people. 00:22:18.240 --> 00:22:19.440 How about that? 00:22:20.960 --> 00:22:26.960 Now on this mountain, Mount Sinai, God gave the law. 00:22:28.240 --> 00:22:43.119 And in comparing the law with grace, which they now enjoyed, the writer of the Hebrews describes the scene on this mountain or at this mountain in a sevenfold way. 00:22:44.000 --> 00:22:48.880 He says, for this is Hebrews 12, 18 to 21. 00:22:49.759 --> 00:22:53.440 For you're not come unto the mount that might be touched. 00:22:54.000 --> 00:22:59.839 Believers today have not come to a mountain that can be touched, as did Israel. 00:23:01.119 --> 00:23:04.079 This does not refer to the command to refrain from touching the mount. 00:23:04.160 --> 00:23:11.119 It emphasizes that Sinai was a material mountain that could be touched, even though Moses was the only one allowed to do so. 00:23:11.279 --> 00:23:16.640 But in the Gospels, all believers may come to a spiritual mountain. 00:23:17.200 --> 00:23:19.839 That mountain burned with fire. 00:23:20.400 --> 00:23:24.799 Everything about this scene was designed to cause awe in the heart of the beholder. 00:23:25.039 --> 00:23:29.200 How different this is from the burning bush which Moses was allowed to approach. 00:23:29.359 --> 00:23:34.079 Everything there was to attract Moses to that bush, that was grace at work. 00:23:34.319 --> 00:23:41.039 Here it is law and distance, and the flames displayed kept the people at bay. 00:23:42.079 --> 00:23:51.359 Nor under blackness, surrounding the mount from which the flames ascended to heaven there was blackness, gloomy obscurity stood between them and the Lord. 00:23:52.079 --> 00:24:03.759 How different from that, which we now enjoy, God having brought us out of darkness and into his marvelous
