now for many years. 00:03:13.840 --> 00:03:31.439 Taking time out from our regular Bible teaching programs to discuss this man or that woman, this evangelist, that preacher, this missionary in the United States of America, Europe and Africa, China, all around the world, from all around the world come these stories of these great men and women. 00:03:31.599 --> 00:03:38.719 And on the program today, a man who made his mark on Canada and beyond, Donald Munro. 00:03:39.360 --> 00:03:41.360 Spelled a little differently than you might be used to. 00:03:41.599 --> 00:03:58.960 M-U-N-R-O, Donald Munro, was born in 1839 in the County Caithness, in the far north of Scotland, where so many of these heroes come from. 00:03:59.759 --> 00:04:08.159 His parents, James and Hannah Munro, held the old Puritan theology of the Highlands that conversion is a necessity. 00:04:08.719 --> 00:04:16.000 The new birth is a work of the spirit in the soul, and the gospel is the means used to effect it. 00:04:16.480 --> 00:04:18.399 They were right on the money. 00:04:18.639 --> 00:04:20.879 You must be converted, you must be born again. 00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:22.560 That's what Jesus Christ said. 00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:26.480 Nobody's born a Christian, and nobody evolves into being a Christian. 00:04:26.879 --> 00:04:28.480 You must be born again. 00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:31.920 This new birth is the work of the Holy Spirit of God in the soul. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:35.439 It's not an intellectual work in the mind, though the mind will consent to it. 00:04:35.680 --> 00:04:44.399 It's not an emotional work in the flesh, though there will be some form of emotion when one is passed from death unto life, from darkness unto light. 00:04:44.639 --> 00:04:51.279 But it is primarily, this new the day the church is taken out of this world, the preaching of the gospel is, was, and will be, to them that perish foolishness, but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God unto salvation. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:30.160 To everyone that believeth the Jew first, and also to the Gentile, God has seen fit to save men through the preaching of the gospel. 00:05:30.480 --> 00:05:36.720 Well, Donald Munro's parents gathered their children daily to read from the Gaelic Bible and to pray. 00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:47.920 In the disruption of 1843, James Munro took his family out of the established Church of Scotland and joined the Free Church, which was more evangelistic. 00:05:48.160 --> 00:05:55.360 But despite his parents' godly example, Donald was to resist the gospel. 00:05:56.560 --> 00:06:01.439 His older brother Charles was the first of the Munroe children to make a clear profession of salvation. 00:06:01.680 --> 00:06:11.920 Charles witnessed to his younger brother on a long walk, but Donald said, quote, I didn't want to be spoken to in that way again. 00:06:14.639 --> 00:06:25.920 In July of eighteen fifty eight, while working as an apprentice cabinet maker in the town of Wick, he went to hear Hay McDowell Grant, the laird of Arnley. 00:06:26.560 --> 00:06:36.079 He spoke from Romans chapter eight and verse one there is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus who walk not of the flesh but of the Spirit. 00:06:36.480 --> 00:06:39.519 He seemed to talk directly to Monroe. 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:46.879 Have you ever noticed that everyone who's been saved under gospel preaching tells the same tale? 00:06:47.040 --> 00:06:53.120 It seems they all say that preacher was speaking directly to me. 00:06:53.439 --> 00:06:54.319 Well he was. 00:06:54.560 --> 00:06:59.519 He was speaking directly to everyone in the building, everyone in the auditorium, everyone on the street. 00:07:00.079 --> 00:07:12.399 But when your heart was arrested by the convicting power of the Holy Spirit of God working with your conscience, how that message became a personal one. 00:07:13.120 --> 00:07:19.759 Young man, that preacher said, You may have read your Bible and said your prayers this morning, but did you pray? 00:07:20.160 --> 00:07:27.439 I warn you now before God who knows you thoroughly, that if you are not in Christ, you are under condemnation. 00:07:27.600 --> 00:07:28.480 That was the message. 00:07:28.560 --> 00:07:32.959 And God burned it into the soul of young Donald Monroe. 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:42.000 Six weeks later, he went to speak privately with Brownlow North, who laid the facts before Donald in a way he had never seen them before. 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:47.759 Later that night, he put his faith in Jesus Christ. 00:07:48.160 --> 00:07:57.759 Now, preacher friend, Sunday school teacher, personal worker, listen, listen carefully, please, listen to me just for a moment. 00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:12.879 When Hay McDonald Grant finished preaching that day, Donald Munro went home a lost man, and yet a lost man under conviction of his sin. 00:08:13.759 --> 00:08:24.319 Six weeks later, another man was able to have a hand in personally leading Donald Monroe to saving faith in Jesus Christ. 00:08:25.439 --> 00:08:32.480 Whether or not the evangelist who preached the day that Monroe fell under conviction ever knew of his conversion, we do not know. 00:08:33.039 --> 00:08:35.039 But he wasn't the saved that night. 00:08:37.360 --> 00:08:41.360 Later, Monroe would win 00:08:54.080 Muir, evangelist, William Faulknore, missionary to Africa, Harry Ironside, Bible teacher and commentator. 00:08:56.480 --> 00:09:04.799 But the preacher, Hayden McDowell Grant, went home, went home one night after preaching to Donald Monroe. 00:09:06.799 --> 00:09:10.480 And as far as he knew, had accomplished nothing. 00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:12.879 Just preach on, just preach on. 00:09:13.759 --> 00:09:16.480 Let God have his way in the outcome. 00:09:17.279 --> 00:09:22.240 Monroe immediately upon conversion wanted to tell his roommate that he had been saved, but he was afraid. 00:09:22.480 --> 00:09:28.720 Finally, waking him in the middle of the night, he told the whole story, and the roommate also trusted Christ. 00:09:28.879 --> 00:09:29.600 That's pretty quick. 00:09:29.679 --> 00:09:35.200 Not many of us get to win somebody else to the Lord within hours of our own salvation. 00:09:35.679 --> 00:09:43.360 Early in his Christian life, Munro contacted James Dewar, who was preaching under Donald Ross's Northeast Coast Mission. 00:09:43.519 --> 00:09:47.120 You've heard about Donald Ross on these programs among the fishing villages. 00:09:47.360 --> 00:09:49.919 After working hours, Donald would accompany Dewar. 00:09:50.399 --> 00:09:52.879 This was harvest season along that coast. 00:09:53.120 --> 00:09:58.320 Dewar's success owed nothing to any brilliance or natural persuasiveness on his part. 00:09:58.559 --> 00:10:03.120 Rather his proximity to God and the throne of grace gave him influence among men. 00:10:03.519 --> 00:10:11.679 He would spend protracted periods in secret prayer, sometimes cloistering himself for days, seeking God in private. 00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:14.639 Monroe was simply a helper to Dewar. 00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:21.440 Then one night James announced to the congregation that there would be two meetings going on at the same time the next night. 00:10:21.679 --> 00:10:24.399 Donald knew Dewar would speak at one of them. 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:31.759 After the meeting asked who would be preaching at the other meeting, and you will was the reply. 00:10:32.559 --> 00:10:42.159 In eighteen sixty five, Donald Ross invited Donald Munroe to join the gospel outreach of the Northeast Coast Mission. 00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:46.000 Donald worked mainly in the far north in Sutherlandshire. 00:10:46.399 --> 00:11:00.240 He also helped in the awakenings along the Moray Firth and in Aberdeenshire, lending a hand in the reaping of souls at Cairnbog, Inverkley, and at Footdi. 00:11:00.960 --> 00:11:06.159 Where the power of God was manifested, the meetings continued day and night. 00:11:07.039 --> 00:11:11.840 As Ross searched his Bible, he decided to end his service in the Northeast Coast mission. 00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:16.159 In eighteen seventy he started the Northern Evangelistic Association. 00:11:16.480 --> 00:11:19.120 Munro was one of the first evangelists to join. 00:11:19.440 --> 00:11:25.919 It seemed a risky step, but Munro reasoned that if God was leading them out, then God would supply their needs. 00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:30.159 His pot will be big enough to hold porridge for me, was his saying. 00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:41.679 Soon the New Mission Society dissolved, and the men discovered that their relationship of co laboring did not need the artificial bands of ligaments of some society or denomination. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:48.080 At Inverary, there was strong opposition, but Munro was an overcomer. 00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:57.440 At their second gospel meeting, quote, few were present but scoffers, and such an exhibition of the devil I never did see before anywhere. 00:11:57.679 --> 00:11:59.440 There were about thirty scoffers. 00:11:59.679 --> 00:12:05.759 During the time of prayer they hissed, cheered, and shouted so that one could not hear his own voice. 00:12:06.480 --> 00:12:18.000 Munro took heart, knowing that sometimes the devil's roars are his admission of defeat, and that he leaves his victims to wallow foaming. 00:12:18.399 --> 00:12:22.559 According to John chapter nine I'm sorry, Mark chapter nine, verse twenty. 00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:33.519 At the conclusion of the week, they saw twenty saved out of this rabble, twenty saved out of this mocking, jeering crowd. 00:12:34.320 --> 00:12:45.120 Among them, an eighteen-year-old named John Ritchie, who went on to serve Christ with his tongue and pen, forming what is now John Ritchie Publishers. 00:12:48.480 --> 00:12:51.120 Have you ever felt you were dealing with people who just weren't paying any attention? 00:12:51.279 --> 00:12:55.120 Have you ever felt like you were addressing a crowd that uh had no interest? 00:12:55.279 --> 00:13:03.440 Did you ever feel that you were witnessing to someone who uh was only intent on harassing you? 00:13:04.480 --> 00:13:16.080 Well, think of all the people that have been blessed and helped through the books published by John Ritchie Publishers, and remember he was an eighteen-year-old troublemaker disrupting an evangelistic campaign. 00:13:16.639 --> 00:13:18.639 But God saved his soul. 00:13:18.960 --> 00:13:27.679 In eighteen seventy one, after a strenuous twelve months of gospel campaigns, Monroe took a break to visit his brother Charles in Park Hill, Ontario. 00:13:27.919 --> 00:13:31.039 He also hoped to witness to his unconverted brother William. 00:13:31.759 --> 00:13:34.080 Monroe reported on the progress of the work. 00:13:34.240 --> 00:13:47.440 His letters were printed in the Northern Intelligencer and the Northern Witness, and became seeds of interest to bring other preachers such as John Carney, John Smith, Donald Ross, and Alexander Marshall over to Canada and the United States. 00:13:47.679 --> 00:13:54.639 At this time Ross was in Scotland examining the issue of Christian baptism, while Munro did likewise in Canada. 00:13:54.960 --> 00:14:02.080 Ross corresponded with his friends, saying that he saw the matter clearly and was baptized in the River Dee one Saturday morning. 00:14:02.399 --> 00:14:08.399 Donald Munro sailed the ocean to have Ross baptize him at Aberdeen on december thirty first, eighteen seventy one. 00:14:08.799 --> 00:14:15.679 Thereafter, believers' baptism by immersion was a key element of teaching to the new converts. 00:14:16.159 --> 00:14:20.320 Monroe also saw a bold step being taken in Scotland. 00:14:21.440 --> 00:14:28.480 In November of eighteen seventy one, as James Campbell recalled, the Lord's table was spread in the simplicity of the early times. 00:14:28.720 --> 00:14:30.559 It was a beautiful sight indeed. 00:14:30.879 --> 00:14:34.879 We had never heard of such a meeting until we saw it with our own eyes. 00:14:35.120 --> 00:14:49.759 Not a priest giving mass or communion to laymen, but all the brethren equally before the table of the Lord, in communion with the Savior and hardness as a good soldier of Christ, do the work of an evangelist. 00:15:01.759 --> 00:15:16.320 When McIntosh published a booklet, an inflammatory booklet called The New Prophets, the scoffers felt that they had the support of the established church, and all restraint against violence and public ridicule was removed. 00:15:16.559 --> 00:15:22.080 At meetings in Huntley, a clergyman stood up to disrupt the message with railing denunciation. 00:15:22.879 --> 00:15:29.039 Donald Ross said the mockers gave savage, cruel, and brutal treatment worthy of the palmy days of the Inquisition. 00:15:29.360 --> 00:15:32.720 God's truth had laid bare the sores, and they were very sore. 00:15:32.879 --> 00:15:50.080 You see, these men were preaching that one was not saved because water had been sprinkled on their forehead when they were a baby, and that one was not part of the true church of the Lord Jesus Christ just because his name was on the membership roll of some denominational structure. 00:15:51.440 --> 00:16:02.799 And here came the trouble from the same religious crowd that hounded Jesus Christ and the Apostle Paul and everyone that's ever tried to do something for God and make a mark on this world. 00:16:03.200 --> 00:16:08.879 At a pack Sunday evening meeting, the scoffers turned the lights out and tried to cause a panic. 00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:10.879 But the Christians remained calm. 00:16:11.039 --> 00:16:16.799 And some of the scoffers were saved by the testimony of the believers. 00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:26.720 At the climax of that meeting, the opposition rushed onto the platform, threw the preachers to the floor, and told them to desist preaching or they would be murdered. 00:16:27.519 --> 00:16:35.840 Isn't that a great way for professing Christians to treat those who are preaching the gospel? 00:16:36.080 --> 00:16:37.840 Isn't that just wonderful? 00:16:38.480 --> 00:16:42.639 The devil must have been quite worried about losing hold of Huntley and rightly so. 00:16:42.960 --> 00:16:47.440 Thereafter it became the birthplace of a number of missionaries and Christian workers. 00:16:48.720 --> 00:16:52.720 In October of eighteen seventy two, Monroe returned to Ontario. 00:16:52.879 --> 00:17:04.400 In eighteen seventy three he was joined in the work by James Campbell and John Smith to campaign in Chatham, Dundas, Forest, Galt, London, Orilla, Saint Catharines, Statford, and Toronto. 00:17:04.640 --> 00:17:08.160 The Word of God went out, and it went out in power. 00:17:08.400 --> 00:17:12.400 Numbers came to the 00:17:24.559 Munro is all right so long as he keeps the gospel, but I warn you against his Bible readings, they are sure to lead you astray. 00:17:25.200 --> 00:17:31.279 One night in eighteen seventy three, Munro visited the town of Shakespeare, near Stratford. 00:17:31.759 --> 00:17:39.039 We can never forget the first time we heard the voice of Donald Munro preaching on the street in Shakespeare. 00:17:39.359 --> 00:17:43.599 Nobody spoke to him, and when he had finished he returned to Stratford. 00:17:44.000 --> 00:17:50.799 He came again the following night, preached in the open 00:19:22.559 One day a property owner stood looking at the work of a mob on the previous evening, when an elder of the church, which was the most guilty of the violence, walked by. 00:19:22.880 --> 00:19:32.400 While embarrassed by his fellow parishioners, he made the lame excuse The truth must be upheld at all cost, even if stones have to be used. 00:19:33.519 --> 00:19:40.400 On hearing this, John Ritchie remarked, Very likely the murderers of Stephen would have given a similar answer. 00:19:40.799 --> 00:19:46.319 Yet that spring Munro baptized twenty five new converts from Shakespeare. preached six weeks of gospel meetings and decided that the meager results dictated that they should pack their bags. 00:20:31.759 --> 00:20:35.039 But on the last night a young man named Thomas Muir born again, Harry Boy. 00:22:27.599 --> 00:22:35.119 When Harry's widowed mother moved the family to San Francisco, Harry thought that those preachers would never buttonhold him again, but he was
