and this is the Preaching of the Cross Radio Broadcast. 00:01:04.799 --> 00:01:24.799 I wonder how many times I have said that in four decades plus of broadcasting on the radio and now simulcasting so that some of you are watching a video presentation of a radio program, what a day and time it is in which we find ourselves living. 00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:34.560 We started several, several sessions ago a study on the biblical doctrine of the eternal security of the believer. 00:01:34.640 --> 00:01:38.640 And by that we mean that God keeps his word. 00:01:39.280 --> 00:01:56.000 And by that we mean that when the Lord promised that he would give eternal life to everyone who believed on him, and that they would never perish, we believe he meant just what he said. 00:01:56.480 --> 00:02:21.759 We started our study in Romans chapter 8 and verses 38 and 39, which say, For I'm persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to separate us, the believer, from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 00:02:22.080 --> 00:02:44.639 And after discussing that great promise, and God would only have to state something once, and it would be eternally true, we then set out to look at 25 other places in the New Testament and a couple in the old, which state the very same truth. 00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:49.039 Maybe different words, maybe coming at it from a different angle. 00:02:49.280 --> 00:03:05.360 But the God who speaks truth, when he speaks the same truth over two dozen times, it's a marvel to me that so many people can't believe it or won't believe it. 00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:07.439 And so it's our attempt. 00:03:07.759 --> 00:03:12.080 What we're attempting on these series of programs is to persuade you. 00:03:12.639 --> 00:03:16.719 The Apostle Paul was persuaded by the Holy Spirit of God. 00:03:17.120 --> 00:03:21.680 He wrote the basis of that persuasion in the Bible for us. 00:03:21.759 --> 00:03:29.840 And those of us who read and believe the Bible, we are persuaded, and we want you likewise to be persuaded. 00:03:30.000 --> 00:03:40.800 Our next reference, and we hasten from Romans over to 1 Corinthians chapter 1, 1 Corinthians 1, and we're going to start reading at verse number 4. 00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:47.840 1 Corinthians chapter 1 and verse 4 reads as follows. 00:03:48.159 --> 00:04:07.680 I thank my God always on your behalf for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ, that in everything you're enriched by him in all utterance and in all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you. 00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:23.680 So that ye come behind in no gift, waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:26.240 God is faithful. 00:04:28.800 --> 00:04:46.800 Not only is the promise interesting, not only is the promise blessed, but when you consider to whom the promise is made, it really stands to reinforce our belief in the believer's security. 00:04:46.879 --> 00:04:47.759 How so, preacher? 00:04:47.920 --> 00:04:55.519 Well, first of all, in verse 4, the Bible says that these people are saved by the grace of God. 00:04:56.560 --> 00:05:10.000 And the conduit, the vessel by which this grace of God became possible, available, and was delivered to them is Jesus Christ. 00:05:10.639 --> 00:05:20.079 He is the foundation upon which God can save the believer by grace. 00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:28.319 And then in verse number five, the saving grace enriches by the same Jesus Christ all who believe. 00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:33.279 These Corinthian believers were richly given utterance. 00:05:34.079 --> 00:05:40.639 They proclaimed the gospel they had received, knowledge, they understood the gospel they had received. 00:05:40.720 --> 00:05:48.560 And then verse six, even as the testimony, listen, of Christ was confirmed in you. 00:05:49.279 --> 00:06:08.480 Let me say emphatically, let me say, as a pastor, as a minister of the gospel, it is absolutely essential that every believer have a good testimony for Jesus Christ. 00:06:09.279 --> 00:06:12.000 That is not what we're reading about here. 00:06:12.560 --> 00:06:27.199 Every one of you that claims the name of Jesus Christ, you should live in such a way as to reinforce by the life you live the testimony that I hope you give with your reason they are gifted by grace is Jesus Christ. 00:06:47.759 --> 00:07:01.360 And the testimony upon which their eternal life rests is not their own, but the testimony of Jesus Christ. 00:07:02.160 00:07:13.519 That's his testimony, not mine. 00:07:14.160 --> 00:07:20.800 He died upon the cross according to the scriptures, that's his testimony, not ours. 00:07:21.199 --> 00:07:24.879 He rose again the third day according to the scriptures. 00:07:25.120 --> 00:07:38.240 He ascended to the Father's right hand, and from that exalted place of glory, the crucified and risen Savior imparts everlasting life to all who believe on him. 00:07:39.279 --> 00:07:41.519 That's his testimony. 00:07:42.720 --> 00:07:53.920 And when I receive Jesus Christ as my Savior, when you or any other sinner receive Jesus Christ as your Savior, what are you doing? 00:07:54.240 --> 00:08:11.920 You are receiving from a believing heart, you are receiving from a consenting mind that his testimony is going to be that upon which you base your hope of everlasting life. 00:08:12.720 --> 00:08:19.360 Now, God knows who has trusted Jesus Christ as Savior. 00:08:19.600 --> 00:08:36.480 And when a man, a woman, a boy, or a girl, like those at Corinth, in the ancient Grecian city of Corinth, two millennia ago, when they put their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, God confirmed that. 00:08:37.679 --> 00:08:41.679 And if a priest never confirmed them, doesn't matter. 00:08:41.840 --> 00:08:45.120 If a church never confirmed them, doesn't matter. 00:08:45.360 --> 00:08:54.879 If God confirmed that they had trusted the testimony of his son, that is the basis of their salvation. 00:08:54.960 --> 00:08:56.240 Not no watch. 00:08:57.519 --> 00:08:59.519 So that you come behind a no gift. 00:09:23.279 --> 00:09:24.159 This is vital. 00:09:25.200 --> 00:09:48.879 In chapter number two of First Corinthians, there are there's evidently a confusion in this church over placing confidence in the words and the wisdom of men, both chapter one and chapter two, and placing confidence in the word and wisdom of God. 00:09:48.960 --> 00:09:50.159 That's that's a problem. 00:09:50.879 --> 00:10:01.440 In chapter number three, there is strife and discord among the brethren in the church at Corinth. 00:10:01.519 --> 00:10:02.639 That's a problem. 00:10:03.120 --> 00:10:08.080 In chapter number four, there is disrespect for authority. 00:10:08.399 --> 00:10:18.399 There are people who are puffed up and proud, exalting themselves against the leadership that God has established in their church. 00:10:18.799 --> 00:10:20.000 That's a problem. 00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:38.159 In chapter five, there is immorality so severe that people are being expelled from fellowship in the gathering of the believers in the city of Corinth. 00:10:38.320 --> 00:10:49.440 There is there is leaven, if you will, in the body, in the in the bread, uh, the congregation of the believers. 00:10:49.759 --> 00:11:02.240 In chapter number six, saved people are taking one another to courts of law because the church won't approve of their misconduct. 00:11:02.639 --> 00:11:09.519 So they're going to the world to get approval to do things that the word of God forbids. 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:11.200 That's a problem. 00:11:12.559 --> 00:11:19.440 In chapter number seven, you've got uh family problems, marriage problems. 00:11:19.600 --> 00:11:32.399 In chapter eight, you've got arguments uh that arise over people having defiled consciences and people uh exalting themselves and pridefully setting themselves over one another. 00:11:32.559 --> 00:11:33.440 That's a problem. 00:11:33.679 --> 00:11:38.320 You've got lack of support for the ministry in chapter nine, that's a problem. 00:11:38.639 --> 00:11:49.039 You've got some people showing up for church drunk in chapter 10, that's a problem. 00:11:49.519 --> 00:11:57.279 You have complaining and murmuring and people yielding to temptation in chapter 11. 00:11:57.360 --> 00:12:13.759 You've got uh arguments and misunderstandings about a woman's uh head covering, and God says it's it her hair is given of her for a covering, but people are arguing that she needs a covering for her covering, and and it's all uh the things just all uh convoluted. 00:12:13.919 --> 00:12:17.600 And in chapter number 12, there's a misunderstanding about spiritual gifts. 00:12:17.759 --> 00:12:20.000 In chapter 13, there's a lack of charity. 00:12:20.240 --> 00:12:24.559 In chapter 14, uh tongues, the gift of tongues is being abused. 00:12:24.720 --> 00:12:28.000 In chapter 15, they don't understand the resurrection. 00:12:28.320 --> 00:12:30.399 This church is a mess. 00:12:31.919 --> 00:12:37.679 The people in the church are a mess, and that's why the church is a mess. 00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:41.120 You say, well, then they must not be saved. 00:12:41.279 --> 00:12:43.120 Well, of course they're saved. 00:12:43.919 --> 00:12:46.720 They're saved by grace, not by works. 00:12:47.440 --> 00:13:07.519 And getting saved by grace didn't fix all their problems, it didn't straighten out all their wrong ideas, it didn't uh resolve all their conflicts, it didn't make crazy people sane, it didn't make carnal people spiritual, it didn't make selfish people loving. 00:13:09.360 --> 00:13:10.879 It saved their souls. 00:13:11.039 --> 00:13:13.919 That's what salvation does, it saves your soul. 00:13:14.159 --> 00:13:27.360 And then God's Holy Spirit and God's word and the preaching of God's word and the fellowship of God's people works over the course of a lifetime, hopefully, to make each of us a little bit more like Jesus day after day after day after day. 00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:30.399 Preacher, what's your point? 00:13:30.639 --> 00:13:32.320 My point's a simple one. 00:13:33.200 --> 00:13:40.240 If any group of people was in danger of losing their salvation, it's this sorry bunch at Corinth. 00:13:42.480 --> 00:13:50.879 If any group of people trusted Christ and then didn't live it, it's the people that got this letter of 1 Corinthians. 00:13:51.440 --> 00:14:12.399 And yet, the Holy Spirit of God in the word of God, in the introduction to the letter, said, The same Lord that confirmed you when you believed on Jesus Christ, gives you his word, he will confirm you unto the end. 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:15.360 Now, how about that? 00:14:15.679 --> 00:14:24.799 You say, Preacher, I just believe if if you do something wrong after you get saved, it doesn't matter what you believe, it matters what the Bible says. 00:14:25.120 --> 00:14:33.679 And the thing for you to do is not argue with the Bible to your own hurt, but to stop hurting yourself and agree with the Bible. 00:14:35.200 --> 00:14:36.159 Please. 00:14:36.879 --> 00:14:45.360 Well, I just think, well, aren't you glad we've got a higher source of intelligence than what you think or what I think? 00:14:46.320 --> 00:14:49.919 We have the living words of God Almighty. 00:14:50.559 --> 00:14:51.600 And this is what he said. 00:14:51.679 --> 00:14:54.480 Now, listen, he's about to write about to write a letter. 00:14:54.559 --> 00:15:09.919 He's gonna have the Apostle Paul write a letter to an assembly of believers in the city of Corinth, and he is going to rebuke them in 14 long chapters. 00:15:10.399 --> 00:15:13.759 Chapter one, hello, chapter 16, goodbye. 00:15:14.000 --> 00:15:27.759 From chapter two to chapter 15, he is wearing them out because they need it, because they are wrong in so many ways and about so many things. 00:15:28.799 --> 00:15:56.240 But before he does, before he does, he says, I just want you to know that all the way up until the day that Jesus Christ comes for you, verse number seven, and all the way up until the time that you are with Jesus Christ, verse number eight, God will be faithful to keep the promise that he made to you. 00:15:56.960 --> 00:16:07.759 And on Monday you might be to blame, and on Wednesday you might be to blame, and on Friday afternoon you might be to blame, and on Sunday morning you might be to blame be to blame. 00:16:07.919 --> 00:16:26.080 But there is coming a day when you will stand in the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ blameless, because as Philippians told us, he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it nation, it might it might be different, but in in my nation, in my nation, when I was a boy, my parents' generation, the men and the women who were my parents' age, they grew up, my parents born in --> 00:17:33.440 Let me tell you something. 00:17:34.640 --> 00:17:48.079 The lost people, the lost people, almost across the board, had more Christian character than saved people do today. 00:17:49.359 --> 00:18:00.720 They had a better understanding of what was right and what was wrong according to the Bible, than most people who go to church and claim to be Christians do today. 00:18:01.519 --> 00:18:03.039 I'm just telling you that. 00:18:12.160 --> 00:18:26.319 If there was a town drunk, he was in hiding, ashamed of himself, and nobody was laughing about it or glorifying say that? 00:18:49.920 --> 00:19:07.440 Because a pastor in 1965 in most of the United States, when a man came to his church and trusted Christ as Savior, he was ready to go because he already knew how to live the Christian life. 00:19:07.680 --> 00:19:12.480 He was, by and large, living the Christian life before he got saved. 00:19:12.640 --> 00:19:18.400 He just needed Christ to forgive him of his sins so he could go to heaven when he died. 00:19:18.640 --> 00:19:20.000 He was working a job. 00:19:22.079 --> 00:19:23.440 He wasn't cheating on his wife. 00:19:23.599 --> 00:19:24.799 He probably a vet, putting in his 40 hours a week, mom's home raising the kids. 00:19:38.559 --> 00:19:39.839 And then he got saved. 00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:40.799 Praise the Lord. 00:19:40.960 --> 00:19:45.359 You can plug him right in to serving God because he knows how to live. 00:19:45.680 --> 00:19:59.839 Today, today, when we lead someone to Christ, age 30, 35, age 25, age 20, they don't know how to get up and dress themselves. 00:20:00.400 --> 00:20:03.039 They don't know how to show up for work and hold a job. 00:20:03.279 --> 00:20:07.759 They don't know how to speak respectfully to a pastor or to an elder. 00:20:09.039 --> 00:20:17.440 They argue with you about everything the Bible calls sin and want to tell you it's not a sin and they love the Lord and the Lord loves us. 00:20:18.079 --> 00:20:19.920 Look, here's what I'm telling you. 00:20:21.039 --> 00:20:30.160 When a man gets saved on a Sunday morning in a church in Europe, in America, I can't speak for the rest of the world. 00:20:30.640 --> 00:20:34.640 He's saved, hallelujah, by the marvelous grace of God. 00:20:35.440 --> 00:20:42.880 But if you're expecting that man to live according to the Bible, it's going to take a while. 00:20:43.119 --> 00:20:56.400 It's going to take preaching, it's going to take prayer, it's going to take fellowship, it's going to take Bible study, it's going to take getting on your knees and repenting and working some things out a second time, a third time, a fourth time. 00:20:57.279 --> 00:21:00.640 Now, are you going to say that man's not saved? 00:21:01.519 --> 00:21:04.960 Because when he got saved, he didn't become sinless? 00:21:05.200 --> 00:21:11.680 Are you going to say that woman's not saved because when she got saved, she still had to learn and still had to grow? 00:21:11.839 --> 00:21:13.279 Well, of course you're not. 00:21:13.599 --> 00:21:28.400 Well, then you can't say that if you commit sin, you lose your salvation, because everyone who gets an entire lengthy chapter on the repentant offerings you have to bring God when you find out you've been committing a Sin in ignorance. 00:22:06.319 --> 00:22:08.880 I'm not trying to make you feel 00:22:23.440 What I'm trying to get you to understand is the people in the church at Corinth got saved and didn't know how to live it. 00:22:24.240 --> 00:22:27.119 Got saved and didn't live it. 00:22:27.279 --> 00:22:35.359 And some of them got saved and lived so badly, they weren't allowed to keep coming to church. 00:22:36.720 --> 00:22:49.359 And later, 2 Corinthians, we find out people worked with them, Holy Spirit worked with them, they repented, they got their lives straightened out, and were able to be welcomed back into church. 00:22:49.759 --> 00:22:51.680 You know what they didn't have to do? 00:22:52.000 --> 00:22:53.759 Get saved again. 00:22:54.960 --> 00:22:56.079 You know why? 00:22:56.400 --> 00:23:19.920 Because they were saved from the moment they trusted Christ as Savior, and saved means confirmed by the Lord and confirmed unto the end, so that those of us, all of us, who are not yet blameless, have the hope and the certainty that one day we shall be blameless. 00:23:20.400 --> 00:23:22.000 Praise the Lord. 00:23:22.319 --> 00:23:26.640 Now, I can't teach all of 1 Corinthians today. 00:23:26.720 --> 00:23:31.119 In fact, we were supposed to look at several verses today and didn't get past this one. 00:23:31.359 --> 00:23:32.640 But uh watch this. 00:23:34.559 --> 00:23:46.400 In the same introductory passage here, the Bible says in verse number one, uh Paul called to be an apostle Jesus Christ through the will of God and Sososthenes, our brother. 00:23:46.559 --> 00:24:04.960 There we go, unto the church of God, which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of our Lord, uh of Jesus Christ, our Lord, both theirs and ours. 00:24:05.200 --> 00:24:15.119 Now look, they are saved, they are sanctified, they are in Christ, they are saints. 00:24:15.359 --> 00:24:15.759 Why? 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:17.920 Because they called on the name of the Lord. 00:24:18.000 --> 00:24:19.759 Now look at verse 10. 00:24:20.559 --> 00:24:30.079 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, there'd be no divisions among you, that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind, in the same judgment. 00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:37.839 For it has been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. 00:24:39.279 --> 00:24:40.640 Well, how about that? 00:24:41.759 --> 00:24:53.599 He can't get through the first half of the first chapter without having to start in on their carnality, and they're sanctified. 00:24:56.720 --> 00:25:10.240 He's not 13 verses into the chapter, and he's rebuking them, he's rebuking them for living in the flesh and they're saints. 00:25:12.400 --> 00:25:13.599 Do you know something? 00:25:14.640 --> 00:25:26.319 If you've never been saved, the only way you can be saved is to call on the name of And if you want to live a holy life and want to live a victorious life and want to live a godly life, you'll ask the Lord to help you and He will, and you'll live that way. 00:26:31.279 -->
