these broadcasts, we are proving to you that in spite of the criticism raised against the Word of God by those who claim on the basis of science to have some greater or higher revelation, we are showing, as a matter of fact, that the Bible is a greater and superior superior revelation on science and matters of science than science itself. 00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:18.639 We began on the last broadcast to give you a number of scientific facts which were not known until this century that are written and recorded in the Word of God, having been written several thousand years ago. 00:02:20.879 --> 00:02:22.800 The famous California scientist Dr. 00:02:22.960 --> 00:02:32.719 Robert Milliken was a Nobel Prize winner in physics for isolating the atom and making it ponderable to human vision. 00:02:32.960 --> 00:02:33.280 Dr. 00:02:33.439 --> 00:02:38.240 Milliken, of course, did not discover the atom, nor did he invent the atomic theory. 00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:42.879 Men had been familiar with the theoretical existence of the atom for many years before Dr. 00:02:42.960 --> 00:02:45.439 Milliken consummated his great work. 00:02:45.759 --> 00:03:07.520 Back in the days some twenty years before his discovery, it was being taught in the seminaries and classrooms of some of our great universities, that uh the dogmatic idea that the atom was the smallest divisible particle of matter that the human mind could conceive. 00:03:08.639 --> 00:03:20.719 Professors were assuring their students in science classrooms across the country that no eye would ever see the atom, as it was the ultimate division of matter, and man's ingenuity would never make it visible. 00:03:20.960 --> 00:03:28.159 These professors gave the idea that atoms were little solid globes of matter like ball bearings or marbles of solid rubber balls. 00:03:28.400 --> 00:03:33.759 Now, while it's true that the atom is infinitely small, it is not the ultimate division of matter. 00:03:34.240 --> 00:03:46.000 Might offer is the best description of an atom the statement that it is a skin full of nothing, with satellites of nothing revolving around a nucleus, except that it has no skin. 00:03:46.319 --> 00:03:58.080 Now it's been stated that if all the space were squeezed out of the atoms of a 200-pound man, enough solid material would be left to cover maybe the head of an ordinary pin. 00:03:58.800 --> 00:04:11.840 The man who realizes this is not apt to get angry when his wife accuses him of being full of hot air, but he he knows that she is she is also, and so this preserves a dignified silence among them about the matter. 00:04:12.000 --> 00:04:24.879 But it's found that even these tiny components of the atom, the proton, the neutron, the electron, and so forth, follow known mechanical laws and travel on prescribed orbits, exactly as do the satellites of a solar system. 00:04:25.279 --> 00:04:34.879 The infinite minuteness of the atom has been lost sight of in view of the comparatively enormous mass an atom is found to be in comparison with its component parts. 00:04:35.120 --> 00:04:53.279 Now, this is all kindergarten science now, well known to any of you that have graduated from high school or should be, but I'm citing this to call attention to the fact that the atomic theory was first discussed by the Apostle Paul in the New Testament. 00:04:54.560 --> 00:04:58.879 The best statement of the atomic theory that literature contains is found in the 11th chapter of Hebrews. 00:04:58.959 --> 00:05:01.279 Now I'm not going to debate with you whether Paul wrote Hebrews or whether he didn't. 00:05:01.360 --> 00:05:02.959 Today I feel he did, tomorrow I may not. 00:05:03.120 --> 00:05:04.160 Doesn't really matter. 00:05:04.399 --> 00:05:17.680 The writer of the Hebrews, in Hebrews 11, verse 3, says, In the magnificent record of the heroes of the faith, and the triumphs they wrought by the virtues of faith, these words. 00:05:34.480 --> 00:05:50.959 Now, if you take the conditions of time and space, and together with those conditions of time and space themselves, things which have actual being do not exist independently of God, but are themselves the work of his word. 00:05:53.439 --> 00:05:56.639 James Hope Moulton bears out this conclusion. 00:05:56.959 --> 00:06:06.079 Dean Alford deals with the text of the Bible, and they work with this thing and and fool with it and try and figure out how it could best be rendered. 00:06:06.319 --> 00:06:23.759 But the truth of the matter is, this statement, in the plain English of the King James Bible, that the things which are seen are not made of things which do appear, is as clear a statement of the atomic theory as it is possible for the human pen to solid foundations. 00:07:13.839 --> 00:07:21.279 Many varied and ingenious tales were told by the ancients, accounting for the suspension of the earth in space. 00:07:21.519 --> 00:07:28.480 The Egyptians believed, for instance, that the earth was supported by five great pillars, one at each corner and one in the middle. 00:07:29.040 --> 00:07:37.120 In your youth, as in mine, you probably studied this Egyptian mythology, probably in the fifth grade, that's when we learned it. 00:07:37.439 --> 00:07:41.120 And it's kind of a strange idea, isn't it? 00:07:41.519 --> 00:07:49.519 I can understand if the earth had been flat and square that someone might have peered over the edge and viewed the pillars. 00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:53.759 But that one in the middle, uh how do you know it was there? 00:07:54.079 --> 00:07:59.519 Somebody put some super glue on their hands and feet and crawl around on the bottom of the side of the earth or what? 00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:02.800 You've probably all heard the Greek legend of Atlas. 00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:06.639 He stood with his head bowed, bearing the earth on his neck and shoulders. 00:08:07.199 --> 00:08:09.439 Well, what did Atlas stand on? 00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:18.480 Now the only myth from antiquity that seems at all satisfactory is the ancient Hindu legend that states that the earth is balanced on the back of a gigantic elephant. 00:08:18.720 --> 00:08:21.439 This elephant in turn is standing on an immense turtle. 00:08:21.680 --> 00:08:24.319 The turtle is swimming in a cosmic sea. 00:08:24.720 --> 00:08:26.720 That's the most satisfactory theory of all. 00:08:26.959 --> 00:08:40.559 It gives something for everything else to rest on, but in that day, when men were dreaming their weird explanations of how the earth was held in place, Job picked up his pen to write about the greatness and wonder of God. 00:08:41.120 --> 00:09:01.679 In the course of his description of the st the might of the Heavenly Father, he wrote, and I quote from the book of Job now, he stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing Now tell me something. 00:09:03.279 --> 00:09:11.600 You that look to science for your answers, how in the world do you explain that? 00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:28.159 How do you account for Job's knowledge of the fact that the earth was hung upon nothing when when no people of his day, no scientific doctrine or theory of his day, set forth that principle and that idea? 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:33.120 Here's a typical debate between a Christian and a scientist. 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:36.480 Doctor, what is it that holds the earth in place? 00:09:37.279 --> 00:09:39.440 It's gravity that holds the earth in place. 00:09:39.919 --> 00:09:40.960 Thank you, Doctor. 00:09:41.200 --> 00:09:42.320 What is gravity? 00:09:42.879 --> 00:09:45.360 Gravity, my boy, is what holds the earth in place. 00:09:45.919 --> 00:09:47.360 Now that's clear, isn't it? 00:09:47.759 --> 00:09:49.679 That's scientific and conclusive. 00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:54.399 What holds the earth in place is gravity, and gravity is what holds the earth in place. 00:09:54.720 --> 00:09:57.519 That's what your brilliant scientists will come up with. 00:09:58.080 --> 00:09:59.679 But Job said that. 00:10:00.720 --> 00:10:03.440 Job said that over four thousand years ago. 00:10:04.480 --> 00:10:05.600 So what'd the scientists say? 00:10:05.919 --> 00:10:06.720 He said nothing. 00:10:06.960 --> 00:10:08.799 He said absolutely nothing. 00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:13.200 What did Job say the earth was supported by? 00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:14.559 Nothing. 00:10:16.320 --> 00:10:20.000 The scientists used a handful of words where Job only used one. 00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:31.600 Now put the modern nebulous term gravity in the place, and hear this man saying, some four thousand years ago, God stretcheth out the north over an empty place and hangeth the earth upon gravity. 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:34.559 You say, well, gravity? 00:10:34.639 --> 00:10:36.000 W that's scientific. 00:10:36.159 --> 00:10:36.879 What's gravity? 00:10:37.039 --> 00:10:39.200 It's nothing, it's just a word you made up. 00:10:40.559 --> 00:10:52.639 Now how did Job know that the earth was not resting upon anything, not hanging attached to anything above it, not braced by anything to the side of it? 00:10:52.720 --> 00:11:02.799 How did he know that by nothing but the word of God's power was the earth in its proper position and orbit in the universe? 00:11:04.480 --> 00:11:05.840 He wrote it down. 00:11:06.799 --> 00:11:08.559 You say, but that's just a coincidence. 00:11:08.720 --> 00:11:12.480 Well, the coincidences are are piling up, aren't they? 00:11:13.279 --> 00:11:14.960 Let's try another one. 00:11:15.840 --> 00:11:30.480 Centuries upon centuries before Jesus Christ was born, multiplying themselves into a thousand years, the writer of Ecclesiastes picked up his pen and wrote, All the rivers run into the sea, and yet the sea is not full. 00:11:30.799 --> 00:11:35.840 Onto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. 00:11:36.799 --> 00:11:39.120 Now, of course, many men have pondered this problem. 00:11:39.440 --> 00:11:43.279 All the rivers do run into the sea, yet the sea is not full. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:46.000 Have you ever thought that through? 00:11:46.879 --> 00:11:53.440 Every year the continents and islands of this earth pour down into the ocean a stupendous volume of water. 00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:55.759 Now you think for a minute. 00:11:56.240 --> 00:11:59.360 A cubic one cubic mile of water. 00:11:59.600 --> 00:12:07.840 That'd be a mile long, a mile square, a mile deep, one lake with a cubic mile of water. 00:12:08.240 --> 00:12:12.159 The weight of a cubic mile of water would stagger the imagination of a man. 00:12:12.480 --> 00:12:25.440 Yet every year the land pours into the sea more than two hundred and eighty-six thousand cubic miles of water for century upon century, and millennium after millennium, this has been going on. 00:12:25.679 --> 00:12:30.159 And the sea has not increased its level by so much as one inch. 00:12:31.759 --> 00:12:33.200 How can this be? 00:12:33.840 --> 00:12:37.600 Well, we call it the cycle of evaporation and precipitation. 00:12:38.000 --> 00:12:47.200 The rite of Ecclesiastes said that the ocean maintains its level in spite of the stupendous annual influx, because the rivers go back to the place from whence they came. 00:12:48.159 --> 00:12:49.600 And indeed they do. 00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:56.799 As the hurrying, singing, cheerful beads of water go slipping down the toboggan slide of the mountain slope, they hasten impatiently to the sea. 00:12:57.039 --> 00:13:10.480 There they climb upon the creator's elevator of evaporation to form themselves into fleece clouds of H two O dust, and ride back to the head of their toboggan slide and there begin their happy tumbling journey over again as the rain falls upon the mountaintop. 00:13:11.120 --> 00:13:17.039 In the modern science of meteorology, all of this is understood, and its laws are comprehended. 00:13:17.279 --> 00:13:20.480 Modern science has fathomed the mystery of this cycle. 00:13:20.799 --> 00:13:27.840 But how did the writer of Ecclesiastes find it out a thousand years before Christ? 00:13:30.320 --> 00:13:32.240 You say it's coincidence. 00:13:32.480 --> 00:13:33.840 Now you know something? 00:13:34.559 --> 00:13:56.399 Sooner or later you've got to realize that the people that told you that the Bible is not accurate scientifically, and the people that told you to reject the Word of God because it's not up to date with modern science, sooner or later you've got to come to the conclusion that it's science that is going to have to catch up to the Bible, not the Bible that needs to catch up to science. 00:13:58.879 --> 00:14:04.799 Some of these arguments uh are kind of like an Irishman who didn't believe in miracles. 00:14:05.200 --> 00:14:13.360 So the local pastor was much concerned with the infidelity of the parishioner and sought to re to reason with him as to the reality of the miraculous. 00:14:14.159 --> 00:14:19.120 So the pastor opened the conversation by saying, Now, Pat, you don't believe in miracles. 00:14:19.440 --> 00:14:31.279 But supposing that on Monday morning, as you were carrying to the hod, the carrying the hod to the tenth story of a great building, at just ten o'clock you slipped and fell and landed on your head on the sidewalk far below. 00:14:31.600 --> 00:14:34.879 If you arose utterly unhurt, that would be a miracle. 00:14:35.600 --> 00:14:38.879 No, said Pat with a shake of the head, that would be an accident. 00:14:39.519 --> 00:14:41.840 Well the pastor smiled and said, Alright, that's an accident. 00:14:41.919 --> 00:14:49.360 But supposing the second morning, the same hour of ten o'clock, you fell from the same place, and again struck the sidewalk to arise uninjured. 00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:51.120 Wouldn't that be a miracle? 00:14:51.600 --> 00:14:55.440 The Irishman pondered a moment and he said, No, sir, that would be a coincidence. 00:14:56.000 --> 00:15:03.120 Pressing the attack, the pastor said, Alright, now we have an accident and a coincidence, but suppose it happened again the third morning. 00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:05.120 Wouldn't that be a miracle? 00:15:05.360 --> 00:15:09.600 With a twinkle in his eye, the Irishman said, No, by that time it would be a habit. 00:15:10.480 --> 00:15:27.440 Well, you know, I'd be willing to concede about six or eight or a dozen of these coincidences in the Bible, where thousands of years before science discovered something to be true, it was already written about in the Bible, and what was written in the Bible is absolutely true scientifically. 00:15:28.480 --> 00:15:35.679 But when they begin to multiply by the twenties, some other explanation has got to be found. 00:15:35.840 --> 00:15:37.200 Now, I'm not exaggerating. 00:15:37.279 --> 00:15:45.919 When I say scores, when I say twenties, there are in the Word of God literally scores of these anticipations of our so-called modern science. 00:15:46.480 --> 00:15:57.039 There have been various attempts, I interested students of the Bible, to show here and there in the ancient prophecies an indication of the fact that men would someday take to themselves wings like a bird and cleave their way through the air. 00:15:57.279 --> 00:16:08.799 Well, I wouldn't add to the far-fetched and strained interpretations of the scripture, but there seems to be one place at least where the modern phenomenon of flight was anticipated by the prophetic scripture. 00:16:09.039 --> 00:16:18.559 In Isaiah chapter 60 in verse 8, we read, Who are these that fly as a cloud and as the doves to their windows? 00:16:19.840 --> 00:16:33.440 Now, the old King James Bible here is speaking about people flying through the air like a cloud, and flying through the air and landing as doves. 00:16:35.039 --> 00:16:42.080 It's utterly impossible for any modern man to say who was the first of our race to dream of the possibility and prospect of flying. 00:16:42.480 --> 00:16:48.720 There are legends and traditions going far back into the Mossy antiquity that carry this long frustrated hope of the human heart. 00:16:49.039 --> 00:16:59.279 It may even be that as Adam walked out of Eden's garden watching the birds glide from tree to tree and soar high into the air, he said in his heart, I wish that I could do that. 00:16:59.679 --> 00:17:08.160 But at any rate, Isaiah anticipated by the spirit of prophecy the fulfillment of that great hope. 00:17:08.480 --> 00:17:14.720 If Isaiah were alive today and were to express this question, namely, who are these that fly through the clouds? 00:17:15.119 --> 00:17:18.640 He would answer, These are they of the twentieth century. 00:17:19.440 --> 00:17:26.559 That much of the anticipation, at least, is established, and we are well on the way toward the climax of his prophecy is obvious. 00:17:26.799 --> 00:17:35.440 The same writer who said that a company of men would fly through the clouds, also said they would land like doves at their windows. 00:17:36.079 --> 00:17:45.519 One of the great drawbacks of aviation is the high land speed of airplanes or landing speed, because of the necessity for a vast area to form an airport. 00:17:45.680 --> 00:17:51.839 Much of the time that is saved by air travel is lost in getting from cities to the airports and back again. 00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:59.200 The same ingenious generation who fly will learn to land at private openings, their own homes. 00:17:59.599 --> 00:18:10.880 Where I'm sitting right now, where I'm sitting right now, uh, let's see, six, eight, eight miles from where I'm sitting right now is a fly-in community. 00:18:11.200 --> 00:18:18.319 Homes built along the runways of an airport that was used to train pilots during the Second World War. 00:18:18.720 --> 00:18:22.319 The owners of these homes also own airplanes. 00:18:22.480 --> 00:18:24.960 They have two garages, one on either side of their home. 00:18:25.039 --> 00:18:29.680 One is for their automobile, the other is much larger, it is for their private airplane. 00:18:29.920 --> 00:18:40.480 And these men, these women, these rich and wealthy people who live in this community, actually fly directly to their homes. 00:18:41.680 --> 00:18:46.880 And fly their winged craft right into their very own dwelling places. 00:18:48.079 --> 00:18:49.680 You say that's amazing. 00:18:49.920 --> 00:18:55.920 Not nearly as amazing as Isaiah writing about it several hundred years before the birth of Jesus Christ. 00:18:58.240 --> 00:19:19.759 Now I'm just calling attention to the fact that among the weighty and mighty words of Isaiah, who was the voice of God in his generation, who spoke of the redemption of Calvary, the coming of the Savior by whose stripes we are healed, the one who wrote of the restoration of Israel, the one who wrote of the coming kingdom of peace on earth. 00:19:20.079 --> 00:19:31.599 In the middle of all this prophecy, he gave a preview of an age when the air would be vibrant with man-made wings carrying a generation of human beings on their flight through the atmosphere. 00:19:32.640 --> 00:19:34.160 How do you explain that? 00:19:36.160 --> 00:19:46.240 The modern science of medicine sets a high value upon prophylaxis, and to us of this generation, prevention means more than cure. 00:19:46.480 --> 00:19:52.960 It would be mere folly to even suggest that Moses in the fifteenth century before Christ knew anything of the germ theory of disease. 00:19:53.039 --> 00:19:54.160 I don't believe he did. 00:19:54.400 --> 00:19:59.359 In our generation, however, this so-called germ theory is no longer a theory, it's an established fact. 00:19:59.680 --> 00:20:12.319 Teeming in the atmosphere, found on dust, in water, permeating all foods and contaminating every physical substance on the planet Earth, there are uncountable myriads of pathogenic organisms that cause suffering and sickness in the human body. 00:20:12.559 --> 00:20:23.759 These tiny creatures that are classified as germs, bacteria, or bacilli, are so infinitely microscopic that the human eye cannot possibly apprehend them unless they are magnified by the lens of a high-powered microscope. 00:20:24.000 --> 00:20:30.240 In fact, most of them are visible only through an oil immersion lens, which increases their magnitude by many diameters. 00:20:30.480 --> 00:20:46.559 It is utterly impossible that any human being could have known the presence of these disease-causing organisms until the great Louis Pasteur established their reality in the face of the opposition of almost every man of science of his perfected, the bacteria remained unknown. 00:20:57.200 --> 00:21:08.880 But now that we know of their existence and have the science of bacteriology that studies their very nature, substance, structure, and organization, physicians almost make a fetish of prophylaxis. 00:21:09.519 --> 00:21:13.440 Undoubtedly, the reader has seen surgeons preparing to enter the operating theater. have a gown, a white gown, white robe. 00:21:26.799 --> 00:21:28.799 They've covered the hair with a surgical cap. 00:21:29.039 --> 00:21:44.160 They spend twenty minutes washing their hands from fingertips to elbows, with that old green soap, with a scrubbing brush, hot water, this slimy substance, the surgeon scrubs and works and rinses and scrubs again, till his hands are nearly as sterile as they can be. 00:21:44.400 --> 00:21:46.720 These clean hands are then wrapped in a sterile towel. 00:21:46.799 --> 00:21:48.799 They might not be contaminated by the air. 00:21:48.960 --> 00:21:52.880 And the nurse binds over the doctor's mouth and nose a sterile gauze pad. 00:21:54.000 --> 00:22:01.599 The patient having been made ready for the incision, the sterilized instruments are taken out of the sterilizing machine, and the doctor bends to Make his incision of mercy. 00:22:01.839 --> 00:22:09.519 Perhaps the most important step in all this prophylaxis is the gauze pad that the nurse has bound over his mouth and nose. 00:22:09.920 --> 00:22:20.880 Many of these pathogenic organisms ride invisibly on the human breath, and the doctor who is operating upon some patient whose life he hopes to save might breathe infection into the open wound without the aid of that pad. 00:22:21.279 --> 00:22:30.160 These tiny organisms, however, cannot pass through the numbers of layers of dry and filmy gauze that constitute the pad but are trapped and rendered innocuous. 00:22:30.960 --> 00:22:41.759 There was an element of intelligence, at least, in the sanitation law that 00:23:03.839 Someday an intelligent generation will force all who have that weird contagion called the common cold to wear such a public protective measure, if they don't all die of AIDS first, but
